Worried about unelected Maori tribal influence in govt? Don’t count on National to fix it.

Appearing on Q and A in June 2022, Nats Shadow Immigration Minister Erica Stanford was asked by Jack Tame “What role should iwi play in immigration settings?” Stanford replied–

“They’re a Treaty partner right, and so they should have a say in that”

She went on to explain how she would consult with “Maori special interest groups within National” and any immigration policy so developed would also have to be “consulted on with Iwi as well.”

How about the cultural war?

Stanford appeared on Newshub Nation in August 2021 and was asked by presenter Simon Shepherd whether she felt “let down” when Nat leadership (Judith Collins et al) were publicly criticising the trend to call New Zealand “Aotearoa”.

Stanford replied that she would not be “distracted by stuff like that. I don’t even think about it, it doesn’t worry me”.

Mr Shepherd replied, “but its your caucus position”. Stanford responded-

“Quite frankly, I haven’t been paying attention. If other people want to worry about such issues, its up to them. Immigration is my focus.”

Ms Stanford’s inability to recognise the importance of the cultural war and her willingness to engage in an informal level of co-governance with Maori tribal groups, should make thinking voters extremely wary of National’s promises.

  It also appears that she has no knowledge of our history if she thinks Maori are a Treaty partner. It should be imperative for all MPs to learn our true history and not the reinvented stuff we continually hear these days. National really are a worry. Let’s hope they wake up quickly otherwise there will be a danger the dreadful current lot will get back in.

        You’re quite wrong G, and you’re ignoring the clear examples laid out in front of you. National have campaigned on the right, and governed on the left for quite some time now. They fail to live up to their own values, and think we won’t notice.

And in treatment of a child cerebral aneurysm, brain tumour or for example subdural haematoma does mātauranga Māori add anything to an operation?

Asking for a friend – a seemingly rather racial friend who needs a little convincing –y’all got one of those? – but is still a substantial tax-payer

  This sort of language is worrying because a reasonable implication is that those ethnic and social-class ‘communities’ without people in the same leadership/power sharing arrangements will not be at the forefront, ie, decisions will be made on ethnic rather than the relevant clinical criteria.
  
  Is it too much to expect journalists and opposition politicians to challenge these statements, or at least demand clarification?

      Maybe/ maybe not GW, but it will certainly contribute to rain and cloud formation etc over the next few years.
      
      On our planet, well over 90% of weather is influenced by what happens to moisture in the atmosphere: is it there? is it condensing? etc etc.
      
      The Tonga eruption spewed millions of tons of dust and whatever into the atmosphere where it acts as the nucleus for droplet formation etc.

Chris says the right are getting desperate in their attacks as per Chris they know this Government has performed well on Covid and managing the economy through this crisis.       I think Trotter runs with the hares and hunts with the hounds. He’s a good (in the sense that he writes well) source of comment on any affair of the times, and will tailor his column very precisely to the audience it’s intended for.

  He still has to go down the “racist” track, yet again reinforcing this ludicrous idea that it is the only reason for the awful statistics for Maori in NZ.
  
  Were any New Zealand government – Labour or National – to embark on a rapid build-up of the state’s coercive forces, sufficient to suppress the anti-social behaviour of criminal elements, there would be an outcry.
  
  Really? I find that hard to believe, particularly with the thuggery on display at the hospital, who in their right mind would criticise police for moving them rapidly with whatever was needed?
  
  Such a policy would be denounced as irredeemably racist. Its critics would demand to know against whom our beefed-up Police, Corrections, SIS and NZ Defence Forces were intended to be deployed. Would these overwhelmingly white bodies of men and women be unleashed against Pakeha?
  
  Well they had no problem whatsoever deploying them against the wide representation of NZers present at the protest in Wellington did they? Tear gas, rubber bullets (yes I know the call them “sponge pellets”). sonic cannons, shields and fists. I’ve seen the video, they seemed to very enthusiastic too, especially the one who knocked out an elderly man with a punch who was doing nothing wrong.
  Are gang members to tough for them? Sure looks that way. Or is instead a clear example of actual racism? “Special” groups get special treatment?
  
  We know of course that Chris had no problem whatsoever wishing harsh punishment on those horrible “anti vaxxers.”
  
  These comments from 2021 haven’t aged well for Mr Trotter.
  
  Is it still a tenable proposition to suggest that after so many weeks of unrelenting messaging, from a vast array of sources, delivered from, and to, every conceivable platform, there are still people out there who have not heard that the Pfizer vaccine is tested, efficacious, safe, and absolutely crucial to New Zealand re-emerging into something approximating normality?
  
  Yes Chris, we heard. Luckily for some of us we have bullshit detectors and can research for ourselves. We don’t rely on any “single source of truth.”

      KK – I queried him giving the chance to state if he had since changed position with the weight of available evidence now in the public domain. He responded “hindsight is a wonderful thing” or words to that effect.
      I gave him a number of links that showed “hindsight” had nothing to do with it. That there were many qualified and opposing expert opinions. But that he had obviously fallen for the “single source of truth” mantra.

    I’ve experienced mature (?) adults using expensive cars to force me off the road. This is why I strongly object to influential people – like Mike Hoskins for eg. – who rant about cyclists, dehumanising them and giving angry, stupid people the justification they need to use their vehicle as an assault weapon against them.
    
    There are people on this board who will argue that cyclists shouldn’t be on the road. That doesn’t hold water; the law allows for cyclists to use the road, and overtaking vehicles have to ensure that it is safe to do so whether it is a cyclist or a logging truck they want to pass.

      Yup, AirNZ is just a joke and has been the last year. Horrific ticket prices, almost always delayed. Ive flown with them domestically at least twice a week the last 6 months, and 3 times internationally – its getting worse, not better.
      
      Quite why they brought in a senior manager from a cheap as chips chain store to run it and think they would get any other outcome is beyond me.
      
      In the same time Ive flown Emirates, Singapore and Cathay. Leaves AirNZ in the dust, in every way imaginable. Going to London in a couple of months, planning it now, no idea who Im going to fly with – other than it wont be AirNZ.

        Yah Hmmo, wife and I have trips to Australia, India, UK, Spain and probably US coming up in the next year and a bit and Air NZ is not looking inviting. Air NZ’s ability to be late, (or even cancel flights) is rivalling Jet Star’s domestic record. And the prices are out there, that’s for sure.

    Over 38,000 people are said to live in the CBD and about 138,000 to work there. I’d imagine having a job there would be a primary reason for living there. There are also suburbs within walking distance – around the top of Khyber Pass Road and K Road, for example. So the figure might not be too far out.

And central Auckland doesn’t = CBD, it includes Remuera, Newmarket, Ponsonby, Herne Bay, Freemans Bay and Mt Eden among others. So to say a third are walking or jogging?   On days I go into the office I use the bus. I’m 5 minutes walk to the bus stop on both ends, and there’s a bus every 10 minutes on average.
  With the cost of parking in the Auckland CBD, going by bus from where I am on the North Shore is more efficient and cost effective than taking my own car.
  I used to be part of a ride share group which allowed us to use the transit lane, but the driver (who had a free park at work) retired. I’d arrange this again if I had free parking in town.

The FAA has very quietly tacitly admitted that the EKGs of pilots are no longer normal. We should be concerned. Very concerned.
After the vaccine rolled out, the FAA secretly widened the EKG parameter range for pilots so they wouldn’t be grounded. It looks like the vax gave at least 50M Americans heart damage.

  This should be a MUCH bigger story than it is. The FAA sets a high bar in terms of pilot health, with annual (and often more frequent) thorough health checks. The fact that the quietly FAA relaxed heart health standards at a time where in-air incapacitation is increasing in frequency should sound alarm bells.

  Organisations like the FAA do not make changes to regulations like these without a paper trail.
  
  Every change of policies impacting on safety, be that for inspection procedures on planes, software requirements or tests for pilots go through a rigorously change tracking process.
  
  Somewhere there will be docs that explain the rationale for the change. Of course what is explained on the paper might be complete bollocks, but that is another matter.

    Any PR interval above 0.2 seconds is called first degree heart block. Above 0.3s is marked. Heart block can be caused by a lot of different things. Inflammation is one… Usually first degree block is asymptomatic but they have a higher risk of developing arrhythmias or progressing to a higher degree block. This does not install a great deal of confidence in the health of the pilot.
    
    I would suggest that the rationale for the change was too many pilots failing their medicals because of this.

Yesterday we went for spin in the countryside to Thames to see our friends who have just returned from three weeks circumnavigating the South Island.
They said the roads were superb everywhere they went.
Driving at the speed limit Timaru to Chch was dangerous as the locals went flying by at up to 150kph.
Not a pothole in sight.
We saw none on SH1 and across the Hauraki Plains.
BTW
The speed limit for trucks is 90kph.
Yeah.

  I went to New Plymouth last weekend, cruise control set to 100kph, passed by more than one vehicle towing a trailer.

  I doubt very much that there are many people doing 150 between Timaru and Chch. No doubt it happens occasionally. There are a lot of people doing 110, but I don’t buy 150.
  Most of the roads I travel on in SI (outside of Chch) are in reasonably good shape, but it will depend a bit from region to region. Chch is still a bit stuffed, some of that due to all the post-EQ fiddling and patching.

  Lol MCos, that road between Timaru and ChCh is fairly straight and flat. Around Rakaia there are some dips in the road that need care when overtaking, as you can’t see oncoming traffic in the dips (and it’s prone to ground fog in the winter). Best stretch though, is McKenzie Country highway 8. You can literally fly along there, a chunk is dead straight and flat for miles and on a sunny day you can see forever. Went the fastest I’ve ever been in a car on that road. It was a long time ago!

  Speed limits are pretty much irrelevant anyway. Most drivers in New Zealand on single track roads will travel at whatever speed it takes to catch up to the car in front. Many seem to see this as mandatory. They would realise the risk of getting a ticket is very small.
  Set your cruise control on Transmission Gully at 100km/hour and you will be constantly passed at speed by streams of cars, trucks and tailor towing vehicles. Interesting how many of the speeding vehicles are business or government branded – presumably their organisations don’t care or don’t apply their vehicle use policies. I drive TG most days. Perhaps once a week I will see a radar cop or someone getting pulled over by a police car.

  The Auckland Regional Fuel Tax is set to expire on 30-June 2028.
  As I recall there were discussions about congestion charges, motorway tolls, but they were rejected by central government and this alternative was given the OK.
  A motorway toll would certainly clear a lot of congestion off those arterial routes.
  The petrol companies are the ones who pay the regional fuel tax and they spread the load across the country.

If I’m reading the flyer that arrived in our mailbox correctly, speed limits on Te Irirangi drive will drop from 80kph to 50kph in the coming weeks.
Sweet Jesus. This is a road that separates the opposing traffic by a median strip maybe 15m wide, so a head-on accident would be basically impossible. Pedestrians can cross the road at intersections or using overbridges. Only a fricken idiot would think it’s unsafe to travel faster than 50kph on that road.
What would need to happen for these idiotic limits to be restored to something sensible? Is a change of government enough? I suspect not.

        Indeed, painting the impression that things have been made safer (airbags etc) often makes people less vigilant.
        
        A great safety device would be putting a sharp spike in the middle of the steering wheel and banning drivers from wearing safety belts. Maybe it would remind them that vehicles are potentially dangerous, so focus on the driving and stop updating your Facebook profile.

      There are so many variables in this.
      
      First off, energy is more of a killer than momentum. Energy goes up with the square of speed, so a car at 50kph has about 2.78x the energy of a car at 30kph.
      
      But… damage to the body goes up non-linearly with energy.
      
      But… the Ashton 1982 number is likely way obsolete for many reasons:
      * medical advances in the last 40 years increase survivability from just about any trauma.
      * car safety has improved in the last 40 years (for both passengers and pedestrians), again increasing survivability. If you got whacked by a 1970s car you’d probably feel it a bit more than a 2010 car.
      * people have got older, so maybe that reduces survivability a bit.
      
      All weighed up, it is quite likely that the survivability is massively better than the old Ashton number.
      
      This improvement in survivability is one of the major reasons road deaths are down (and is also why murder rates can go down even though serious violent offending goes up).

My father in law Les had his funeral today. Regular readers may recall that he was a country police officer on the West Coast.

Shout out to Greg O’connor MP who delivered a lengthy message of sympathy to the family. He conveyed that as a kid, his admiration of Les inspired him to become a police officer. None of the family were aware.

Among many facts he notes that over the last ten years the Education Ministry staff count has doubled from 2,000 to 4,000 while our students finish their secondary education with poorer and poorer literacy and numeracy.

If NZers can’t tell by now that they’re being totally rogered by those who claim only the state should run an education system and that ours is world class – well then they’ve only themselves to blame.

In the wake of the covid pandemic lockdowns and mandates, many western nations and states in the US witnessed a new eye opening level of government intrusion into the daily lives of citizens. Some, however, dealt with worse scenarios than others.

New Zealand in particular has popped up time and time again over the past couple of years with some of the most draconian restrictions on the public, and sadly the trend has not stopped just because the pandemic lockdowns stopped. The island nation seems to be intent on setting the standard for authoritarian policies and government micromanagement, and a series of recent laws are driving home the reality that they do not intend to relent.

Tragedy at opoutere beach . Drowning , one dead , 5 people rescued ,one missing .

Reminded me of my visit there 25 years ago , went for a nude surf coz no one around. Came in when people turned up n one of em grabbed me clothes ….. had to do the casual walk up to the car park and sort it out starkers 😁
Good surf . Great spot .
