We must be overdue to talk about another entertaining member of the church pantheon, so Happy St Vitalis’s Day!
Vitalis looked up the name and address of every prostitute in Alexandra! He then visited one prostitute each day to teach her about dignity and value as a woman. Eventually a man misunderstood the reason for Vitalis’s visit to a brothel, struck him on the head and killed him.
Vitalis is the patron saint of day laborers and prostitutes.

  mike, I somehow doubt he looked up any prostitutes in Alexandra. Bit far away from him I’d say, and ahead of his time. And there was more than one Vitalis. I’ve seen depictions of one in a Basilica in Ravenna, Italy and in Venice.

      Tory Whanau was a decisive winner last October. Some detail, for your information: She received 30,656 first preference votes (FPs), being 42.56% of the 72,025 valid votes cast (9 candidates), and finished with 34,462 (52.40%) of the 65,762 votes remaining in the election. Paul Eagle received 11,935 FPs (16.57%), incumbent mayor Andy Foster received 11,835 FPs (16.43%), and Ray Chung received 10,383 FPs (14.42%).
      
      A total of 6,263 votes (8.70%) dropped out of the election during the count. Andy Foster (1st runner-up) finished with 16,711 votes (25.41%), and Paul Eagle (2nd runner-up) with 14,589 (22.18%).
      
      (It is also worth noting that Whanau increased her share of the valid first-preference votes from the Progress result (40.85% – 24,275 / 59,422), to the Preliminary count (41.33% – 28,456 / 68,851), to the Final result (42.56% – 30,656 / 72,025), whereas the percentage vote-share for each of Eagle, Foster and Chung reduced for the three of them through both the Preliminary count and the Final result.)
      
      The last time (in the STV era) that a candidate won so easily (whereby the votes of the second runner-up candidate did not need to be transferred), was in 2007, when incumbent mayor Kerry Prendergast received 17,910 (34.89%) of the 51,328 valid votes cast (11 candidates), and finished with 21,868 (50.98%) of the 42,892 votes remaining in the election. A total of 8,436 votes (16.44%) dropped out of the election during the count. Ray Ahipene-Mercer (1st runner-up) finished 10,899 votes (25.41%), and Bryan Pepperell (2nd runner-up) with 10,125 (23.61%).
      
      I think it has to be said that, given that Whanau beat the incumbent, and a local MP, Whanau’s huge victory is nothing short of astonishing. It clearly surpasses that of Prendergast in 2007, which, in itself, was a very comprehensive win.
      
      Just to conclude, Kerry Prendergast won the mayoralty in 2001 (FPP) with 34.24% of the votes, and in 2004 and 2007 (STV) with 42.39% and 34.89% of the FPs, respectively. In 2010, she lost to Celia Wade-Brown after topping the poll with 40.86% of FPs. So, by your reckoning, most Wellingtonians never voted for her, either.

  I would speculate the more likely reason for the curve flattening is that people were reluctant to test over the holiday period, lest they tested positive and had to isolate.
  
  Conversely, there’s likely to be a spike in new infections as people return to work, making the spectre of a few days in isolation on paid sick leave less punitive!

        As soon as I heard about that I guessed what they would do with it. Despite the fact there’s no “climate crisis” and nothing man has ever done, or could ever do, would influence the climate in the slightest, they have now managed to make a case.
        
        Their logic is:
        
        1. There was a massive and growing hole in the ozone layer, which has a serious impact on people underneath it (us and Aussie mostly but there are others).
        
        2. They discovered that CFCs were causing the hole or at least contributing to it.
        
        3. They banned CFCs some 40 odd years ago, at least in most countries (197).
        
        4. They now believe the ozone hole is getting smaller, and think in several decades time it will close.
        
        5. Ergo, taking action to reduce or ban something (CO2) will fix the “climate crisis”.
        
        Straw man non-sequitur bullshit, right there.

  I had a good laugh at this article to. Here’s a thought for the fearmongers in the MSM; throughout my life I’ve had the sniffles, colds, flus, bronchitis etc and never once have I ever even gone to a doctor let alone tested myself to see what it is so why would I with covid? These journalists need to understand that most people don’t care about it anymore than they would a flu especially considering its in the same boat as one. It’s time for journalists to move on and find something else to report on that people are interested in, scrutinizing politicians would be a good bet.

    Correct. Pretty sure we had the special cold in early December, but nobody tested, nobody isolated. I did stay away from my neighbour’s visiting (from the UK) father just because the man is aged and on holiday and any flu would be unnecessarily unpleasant, but beyond that it was ‘business as usual when you have the sniffles’.

  Anyone who really thinks you can predict human or world behaviour using mathematical models is seriously deluded.
  In the 1960’s there was a group of prominent intellectuals called “The Club of Rome”, who used mathematical theories to predict worldly outcomes.
  All BS, and now totally forgotten.
  So you can give your spreadsheet a fancy name (Predictive Modelling for example), or just refer to “the models”, but it is still maths predicting human behaviour.

Have we heard the true story about the war in Ukraine that Russia is losing? Have we heard any truth about the stolen election in Brasil where the so called winning president is a criminal (Biden sent the FBI or CIA to Brasil a few months before the election to train the electoral dept.) and Bolsanaro is the one mounting the “rebellion” while he is in hopital in Florida?

  Apart from some light scouring down our gravel driveway – no damage.

  NIWA has a good database of notable New Zealand weather events going back to the late 19th century. I have read the whole thing. Many of the weather events of 100 years ago were epic, destructive and deadly.

    BY, yes. However, Brandelino, NIWA’s Chief Weather Scientist continues to pedal a false narrative. As recently as Friday, he was pedalling mythology that the current wet summer is sub-tropical climate change that will affect more of the North Island. In saying that, he (& NIWA) are failing to reference past weather events, including wet summers that occur every 7 to 10 years because of La Nina events which follow El Nino weather events.
    
    I might add in September he was predicting a dry spring & summer. This because the temperature in northern Tasman was higher than average. After the wet spring, he doubled down on the dry summer. Events have shown him & NIWA to be wrong. What is striking is that Branelino & his NIWA colleagues do not appear to reference any of the historic data available to them and correlate current data with weather patterns of the past.
    
    Clearly, they are too busy pursuing an agenda, rather than understanding and prepare forecasts that is based on analysed evidence.

This is ridiculous and basically fear mongering propaganda by our hopeless media. Show a satellite image of a Chinese funeral home from a year ago with no cars parked outside it (when their citizens were locked in their homes) and show one now with some cars parked outside it and claim that means they are overwhelmed by covid deaths on a massive scale.

But it’s verified by CNN. Whatever that means.

Then they complain that China aren’t reporting enough deaths.

Sounds like they are just reporting the actual deaths instead of gang members shot in driveways that test positive after the lead poisoning…

If they carry on like that people will realise how mild this is and that they have been tricked so we must engineer some stories to make it look bad.

And if you really want to know how bad the media are, they spelt covid wrong in the article. Lucky they haven’t got any credibility left to lose.

There was a story on 1News last night about people queueing to buy Harry’s book at midnight. It was interesting to see that the books being unpacked at the bookstore all had a “Half Price” sticker on the cover.

For a book to be sold at a 50% discount on its launch date suggests that either it was overpriced in the first place, or it was underwhelming. Given that I have chosen to respect Harry’s desire for privacy I won’t be reading Spare, so someone else can tell me which option applies!

        That hit-piece in the Atlantic has aged like blue cheese left in a car boot for months. There is literally so much he was mocked for that has been proven correct, for example:
        
        On Tucker Carlson Tonight, he predicted that the vaccines would cause an uptick in cases of COVID-related illness and death in the U.S.
        
        The correlation between high level of ‘vaccination’ (I puke using this word…) and high levels of Covid infection is now very well established.
        
        And then…
        
        He has blamed the vaccines for suppressing our immune systems, by misrepresenting normal immune-system behavior.
        
        One word: IgG4.
        
        I disagree with Berenson on plenty, but on the basic tenet that these experimental genetic injections are harmful and should have never been used, he and I and million of others agree.

    I think John Key is the best Prime Minister we’ve had in at least 50 years, likely longer. Intelligent, charismatic, great leader of our strongest ever Cabinet. His personal friendship with Obama was invaluable in resetting our relationship with the US. His personal rapport with Xi was valuable in deepening our commercial ties with China.
    
    But I have a much less benign view of China than he’s recently proposed. And I suspect I’m much more cautious than him as to how China seeks to influence and compromise individuals, society and government in countries like New Zealand. Of course there’s a huge commercial opportunity with an economy the size of China’s. But there’s a price to be paid for that, and I think we should carefully consider whether we want to pay that price.

      If I were King of New Zealand (to use a phrase) I’d happily have us continue to trade with China on our current terms.
      
      But I’d also progressively raise our defence spend to the “2% of GDP” target that most Western countries hold to. And I’d rebuild our traditional defence relationships with Australia and the US. China would probably not like that and, as we’ve seen with Australia, use trade as a way of expressing their displeasure.
      
      I suspect many here would be happy to see NZ take a posture like that.

In the herald today we read that Jacinda is not going to back down on Maori issues this year even if National makes it an election issue.

I’m all for protecting Maori culture but there has to be limits to how far you go with this. Maori only makes up 16% of the NZ population and where is the evidence the majority of Maori want co-governance anyway?

Interesting that Jacinda appeals to National signing a pledge on indigenous rights with the UN and equates this to mean Maori have a right to co-govern NZ under some imaginary UN law!

If the people of this country don’t wake up to this global elite agenda then frighteningly it might become a reality in NZ.

Jacinda and her Maori elites have to go.

  Jacinda Ardern is no Helen Clark. Memorialising Clark and positively comparing her to Ardern needs to stop. Clark’s government was disastrous for Māori and irrevocably damaged the relationship between Labour and Māori, which has stood since Rātana. Māori have every reason to be wary of pre-election lip service from Labour. Ardern has to be willing to accept, listen, and respond to criticism from Māori voices in developing policy. For the Ardern-Davis partnership to live, Clark’s Labour must die [1].

Labour ensured New Zealand remained a non-signatory until Pita Sharples flew to New York in secret to sign in 2010 under National. New Zealand only caved to mounting pressure after it was revealed the US, Canada and Australia, the remaining non-signatories, would sign. Then-prime minister John Key stressed the declaration was non-binding and wouldn’t impact the Crown’s treaty negotiations, despite the heavy criticism of the treaty process in UN special rapporteur Rodolfo Stavenhagens’ 2006 UN report on the rights on indigenous peoples in New Zealand.         The Republicans in the House look like they are going to use the opportunity of the next two years for performative art, rather than actually legislating. Pass a whole of absurd bills which have no chance of becoming law. However they need to be careful. If voters get the idea they represent future Republican policy, then it could all be a big negative.
        
        The one area where the Republican majority might really affect things is the debt ceiling and the annual budget. When that is next hit, the House will need to approve the extension. Similarly with passing the budget. With the Freedom Caucus wanting some quite extreme measures, the scene is set for a major government shutdown and a possible default.
        
        Moderate Republicans may want to avoid that, and will do some sort of deal with moderate Democrats. Allowing the extremes of both parties to do their performatives acts of feigned outrage.

  CDC Finally Releases VAERS Safety Monitoring Analyses For COVID Vaccines:
  
  CDC’s VAERS safety signal analysis based on reports from Dec. 14, 2020 – July 29, 2022 for mRNA COVID-19 vaccines shows clear safety signals for death and a range of highly concerning thrombo-embolic, cardiac, neurological, hemorrhagic, hematological, immune-system and menstrual adverse events (AEs) among U.S. adults.
  
  There were 770 different types of adverse events that showed safety signals in ages 18 , of which over 500 (or 2/3) had a larger safety signal than myocarditis/pericarditis.
  
  The CDC analysis shows that the number of serious adverse events reported in less than two years for mRNA COVID-19 vaccines is 5.5 times larger than all serious reports for vaccines given to adults in the US since 2009 (~73,000 vs. ~13,000).
  
  Twice as many mRNA COVID-19 vaccine reports were classified as serious compared to all other vaccines given to adults (11% vs. 5.5%). This meets the CDC definition of a safety signal.
  
  There are 96 safety signals for 12-17 year-olds, which include: myocarditis, pericarditis, Bell’s Palsy, genital ulcerations, high blood pressure and heartrate, menstrual irregularities, cardiac valve incompetencies, pulmonary embolism, cardiac arrhythmias, thromboses, pericardial and pleural effusion, appendicitis and perforated appendix, immune thrombocytopenia, chest pain, increased troponin levels, being in intensive care, and having anticoagulant therapy.
  
  There are 66 safety signals for 5-11 year-olds, which include: myocarditis, pericarditis, ventricular dysfunction and cardiac valve incompetencies, pericardial and pleural effusion, chest pain, appendicitis & appendectomies, Kawasaki’s disease, menstrual irregularities, vitiligo, and vaccine breakthrough infection.
  
  The safety signals cannot be dismissed as due to “stimulated,” exaggerated, fraudulent or otherwise artificially inflated reporting, nor can they be dismissed due to the huge number of COVID vaccines administered. There are several reasons why, but the simplest one is this: the safety signal analysis does not depend on the number of reports, but whether or not some AEs are reported at a higher rate for these vaccines than for other non-COVID vaccines. Other reasons are discussed in the full post below.
  
  In August, 2022, the CDC told the Epoch Times that the results of their safety signal analysis “were generally consistent with EB [Empirical Bayesian] data mining [conducted by the FDA], revealing no additional unexpected safety signals.” So either the FDA’s data mining was consistent with the CDC’s method—meaning they “generally” found the same large number of highly alarming safety signals—or the signals they did find were expected. Or they were lying. We may never know because the FDA has refused to release their data mining results.
  
  The mammoth keeps getting bigger and the refusal to acknowledge any problem at all is beyond belief.

    Unfortunately I believe it is going to be like cigarette smoking. Suspicions of issues with smoking were there in the 1930’s/1940’s. I guess it was finally acknowledged as an issue 50 years down the road. In the meantime big tobacco (big money) suppressed research they had showing smoking was the issue, smeared anybody who raised concerns, used their economic muscle to lobby and bribe, dismissed correlation as it was not causation. To me this mirrors exactly what we see now.
    
    Another big problem in NZ is that because all the current MPs and the legacy media got on board with the get vaxxed messaging, none of them are going to admit they were wrong. I don’t think we will hear proper debate on vaccines until we get some untainted, new blood into our parliament and media. But that isn’t going to be a fast process.
    
    Anybody voicing views like yours mainstream is just going to get slandered and smeared out of the debate. We see some of that here, but most KB’ers are open to hearing and debating facts. So please keep up your good work.

    There is no such thing as a RINO. The Republican Party has always had multiple factions with different viewpoints, and has over it’s long history many different approaches to policy. If you applied the current definition of RINO to previous Republican Presidents it would invalidate almost every single one prior to Trump. For example Dwight Eisenhower would definitaley be considreed a RINO by today’s silly standards.
    
    Also, both parties are equally fond of pork barrel politics. The Republicans have always been fair weather friends to fiscal responsibility. Someone on this forum forecast that last year would be proclaimed the hottest on record ford for NZ.
Turns out they knew what they were talking about, but I doubt if they think NIWA does because it goes against that which the skeptics claim.

Creative writing….

The reliability of Prince Harry’s memoir has been called into question after it emerged ‘facts’ about how he learned about the death of the Queen Mother cannot be accurate.

In his book, Spare, the Duke of Sussex wrote in painstaking detail of the call he received while at Eton, telling him his great grandmother had died on March 30, 2002.

He writes: ‘At Eton, while studying, I took the call. I wish I could remember whose voice was at the other end; a courtier’s I believe. I recall that it was just before Easter, the weather bright and warm, light slanting through my window, filled with vivid colours.’

But resurfaced photographs appear to place the prince in Klosters, Switzerland, the weekend the Queen Mother died.

    Sounds like future job opportunities for you when you leave your govt job. But do tell us how a photo showing he was skiing at the time is creative writing, or even the photo of them returning from the holiday after her death
    
    Interesting to also see in his creative writing that Diana gave him an Xbox, pretty amazing considering she died in 1997, first Xbox released in 2001
