  I just think she spent too much time relaxing over the summer; while of course banking the salary. Mid/late Jan resignations are actually quite common.

    It was always in the tea leaves as of about the beginning of 2022 when she f**ked up in Feb 22 with the protests. Managed appallingly. Ever since then she was doomed. She can blame the mandates as her #1 failure on her call, her leadership. Lies soley on her shoulders. there were avid Labour voters that got shafted by the mandates.

      Absolutely. Dehumanization, segregation and persecution of a vast swathe of the our people never belonged in NZ. These people were our neighbors, or families, friends and colleagues. Therefore it is proper, at a minimum, for Ardern to step down.
      
      Now where are National on this? When they wholeheartedly supported and participated in all of the above. How are they planning to openly readdress this?

  Adern should have resigned at the start of her prime ministership. Mixing up gdp and crown revenue should have been a clue to her and voters.
  
  Unfortunately the damage has been done and no amount of labour party resignations will fix that.
  
  I only hope National and Act investigate all crown spending and hold any mps benefitting from the wasted billions to account.

I called this back in December for a different reason to most; I don’t think it’s much to do with anything except she’s had a summer holiday break and is terminally lazy. When someone leaves this role which has had such a wide impact and carried the responsibilities of it, it is customary to be gracious and generous.
In fact I can’t do that, she talked about being kind, which she hasn’t. Never seeing how it would be necessary to lie in politics, when she has become the most dishonest PM I can ever recall, protected by a cohort of bought media who never challenged her.
Promising to lead the most Open and Transparent government ever? The most calculatedly secretive ever was what we got.
The fact is she has seen the writing on the wall and she’s doing a runner.
Her primary personality weakness in this role is that she doesn’t cope with not being publicly adored and that is a major flaw.
And that’s before we see how she has failed at every improvment she promised to make. Housing, health child poverty etc. etc., the list goes on.
She should have been better, and we have been entitled to better.

      To be clear, there’ll be a caucus vote on Sunday, if any candidate gets over two thirds they’ll be the new Prime Minister, Ardern may well step down immediately in that case.
      If nobody get 2/3s and I’m not sure how long they’ll try for it, the vote will go out to the wider membership, and unions, who will decide.

So many people called this would happen. Must be a poll coming out tonight haha.

Honestly good riddance. She never took responsibility and always had to deflect blame onto others. Led one of the least transparent Governments in our recent history despite constant rhetoric to the contrary. Spent a crapload of our money for negative results (i.e. healthcare) with tremendous growth in Govt spending over her tenure. Responsible for gangs running amok. Lowest business confidence in 50 years. Record growth in house price and unaffordability.

Truly one of the worst PM’s in recent history. The facts of the damage done by her will not be forgotten by me and none of the Labour PR machine will make me see otherwise, despite so many Kiwi’s falling for the PR spin.

I had always suspected that Ardern is a celebrity PM with all smiles and no substance, and her limitations are readily on display now that the going has got rough.

Knowing she can’t deal with serious problems, she has simply decided to bail out. No doubt a new prestigious role at the UN beckons where she can continue to look nice, happy and influential without actually doing anything.

Whoever they pick will be toast come 14 October. In fact chances are they will go thru more than one before then. The infighting will be spectacular it always is with Labour. All the Nats have to do is keep calm and carry on annoucing policy. Dont comment on your enemy when they are in the hole. ACT need to work with the Nats to annouce policies that the Nats secretly want but dont want to in order to not frighten the horses.
A smart Nat/ACT will be working together to hoover up the disenchanted Labour vote.

Yet still people say national shouldn’t actually advocate for things like democracy, meritocracy, personal responsibility etc. Coz that might offend the luvvies and the lefties. FFS – we need to come out of the closet and persuade the electorate that our way is actually better. I think it is a huge shame. I wanted to see Cindy Ardern contest the next election, and get annihilated.

Cindy losing the next election by a landslide would see a measure of justice for all her victims over the past five years. Sadly, this justice has now been denied to us, the voters of New Zealand.

It also raises the possibility that the socialists will claim that they were cheated, when they lose the next election, much like the Nazis claimed after World War One:

A power struggle now between Maori caucus, Mahuta and the union bloc, Michael Wood. My money is on Mahuta as First Maori Wahine PM etc and if that happens will just show how strong the Maori caucus is. Grunta will just have to wait for his turn in 21 years time. What it does show is the whole platform is burning now and past saving, we have a caretaker government with nothing left. My nagging question is what’s coming out of the woodwork, the nothing left to give and family is BS. She was the woman who could do anything, be PM and mother.

Helen Clark was Labour leader for nearly 15 years, to be followed by Phil Goff for 3 years, David Shearer for nearly 2 years, David Cunliffe for one year, Andrew Little for nearly 2 years and, eventually, the five years of Ardern. The sequence from the end of Clark to the start of Ardern saw 6 leaders in 9 years.
In contrast, National’s turmoil, following the end of John Key’s 10 years, saw Bill English for 1 year, Simon Bridges for 2 years, Todd Muller for 2 months and Judith Collins for one year before finding their likely next PM in Chris Luxon (1 year so far) for a total of 6 leaders in 5 years.
Given the tendency of events to accelerate, I predict that Chris Luxon will lead until defeated in the 2029 election, during which time he will have contended with a minimum of 9 Labour leaders in 8 years, including Stuart Nash for 1 month next year and Michael Wood for 3 weeks in 2026.

  Agree with you analysis, and 2 terms is reasonable as a general rule.
  But the sane and pragmatic need at least 2 terms, if not 3, to reverse and redirect funding and the nations energy and ideological fixations before short-memories lead to Labour getting near the levers of power again.
  
  I hope Nats/ACT make the use of their time well, and unlike Labour actually have a plan from Day 1 around delivering what their supporters want.
  
  The tragedy of Labour is that even the reasonable and admirable aims of their supporters (matters of housing, poverty, dignity) were either invisible once they were in power, with efforts subsumed into race-based power building for Iwi elites and toxic activists, or else they actually only got WORSE.
  If National & ACT can do anything around these matters (ED times, law and order, education, health & wealth) at the same time as rolling back and ring fencing the cancer of ‘Treaty Principles’ then NZ might just have a hope of not becoming a shithole.

  There is not really any accomplishment to point to, aside from possibly the Covid response; and even that if deemed a ‘success’ is only conditional to the assumption it was a net positive in terms of lives or the economy (I think not) or that it could have been done better on several particulars (slow on some things and poor on others – MIQ and the much malign ‘vaccines/interventions’, ICU capacity, PPE, etc).
  If you put Covid aside, or the empire building for Maori-elites who stand to benefit, then her government was uniformly a disaster for NZ

Her resignation was all class. If there had been anxiety in her decision, pressure, or disappointment about the trolls she didn’t show it in any way. Therefore casting them as truly meaningless.
I’ve finally made up my mind 5 years after she presented one of my daughters with a national award when I couldn’t quite gauge the PM’s sincerity. Now I can say she is through and through a champ in hell or high water as the saying goes.

I seriously hope Andrew Little becomes the next Prime Minister. He is so likeable, has such personal grace, and has a track record of nothing but success throughout his entire career. Plus, his little round glasses make him look like someone to be taken seriously. He will lead Labour to its greatest ever election victory this year.
