    Things are definitely weird out there at the moment. In Christchurch, I walk past the ford delivery yard and it is absolutely full of brand new Rangers being delivered before being moved on to the showrooms. Chat to the delivery drivers now and again and pretty much most of these new Rangers are already sold. The few that aren’t pre-sold don’t stick around long either apparently.
    
    Our company struggles to find junior to mid-level engineers – frequently having to pay A type wages to get C type employees.
    
    On the face of it, things look good. Regardless of interest rate rise, cost of living issues and inflation etc.
    
    But I just wonder if we are standing at the edge and a little nudge more could topple the whole house of cards?

        My strategy at the moment. I live in Siem Reap Cambodia during Kiwi Winter, live well and actually can save money every month and its sunny 95% of the time.
        
        Modern 1 bedroom western style furnished apartment, includes high speed wifi, with cleaning service once a week. $75 NZD a week!.
        
        Last months electric bill $65
        Being a tourist town it has many many different restaurants and imported foods and lots of English speakers.
        
        I could wax on about the many financial advantages. But you catch the drift.
        
        Been doing it for 8 years, never regretted the decision for one minute. PS am 76 yo pensioner.

    The issues around dental treatment are a mystery to me.
    I went to the dentist this past week – cost me $445.
    Had to wait seven weeks for the appointment – so there are either not enough dentists in the town or, lots of people are still seeking treatment despite the cost.
    I’m not sure that the former is the case. There are quite a few dentists here from southern Africa and India – plus the NZ trained ones.
    So that brings in cost.
    For many people, it seems attention to teeth doesn’t compete with attention to other “lifestyle” related spending.

      The problem with dentistry is that demand is limitless. Basic treatment is already free for kids or heavily subsidised. If people drink sugary drinks and smoke, their teeth will be buggered and they will have gum disease. Their choices.
      
      Then there is orthodontics. Where do you draw the line?

      This is a bit tangential about teeth and dentists, but a New Zealand company based in Dunedin, BLIS Technologies has invented and now supplies various probiotics globally, including ToothGuard.
      
      Repopulates the mouth bacteria. Works very well in my experience, and the prevention is a lot cheaper than the dentist. And always good to support local initiative.
      
      Trust me, over the years I have kept my dentist in the manner he is accustomed, but these days not so much.

    Labour bribe/s have worked very well for them in the past. However, not sure they will be too bothered about losing in 2023, as they are working hard (honestly) to leave the cupboard bare and many convoluted contracts very expensive to unravel. And if they do unravel, there will be plenty of the temporarily unemployed smiling all the way to the bank.
    
    If Labour et al do win, and it’s quite possible, they will have a lot of fun figuring out how to pay for their coalition partners’ promises.

    I wonder if there are a lot of homeowners just hanging on? Suspect there are a fair few already in negative equity – certainly anyone who bought in the covid-frenzy year or so?
    
    In the Christchurch area, I was stunned during the covid-frenzy phase at the absolute bonkers reaction to the property market. Houses jumped $300k to $500k in a couple of years – it was completely insane. I saw big subdivisions and house and land packages selling out within hours, websites crashing due to demand.
    
    Fast forward a year or so and the for sales signs are starting to be hung out. New houses just built on the market straight away. Might have been bought as a punt for a quick buck or were actually a dream house, regardless, a good amount seem to be up for sale pretty much as soon as the landscaping is done!
    
    Starting to see the quiet signs of desperation in the existing home market also – house starts at auction, gets passed in, listed as ‘by negotiation’, then finally gets priced (way too high), bit more time the ‘price reduced’ phase comes, then we get to the ‘bring all offers’ stage.
    
    All anecdotal but you do start to think that things could quickly take a turn for the worse. But as I said above in another post, the Ford Rangers are still flying off the showroom. When the fall comes, and I suspect we are fast approaching the economic cliff edge, it could make the GFC episode look like a minor blip!

      {Sinking feeling} oh oh what you write is reminding me of the 1987 stockmarket crash where everyday Kiwi’s that put a lot of investment in all sorts of companies found they lost everything overnight.
      
      Is it a coincidence another distracted Labour Party is in power this time around?

  That’s interesting. My reading of earlier D3 studies showed that D3 deficiency led to increased risk, but those papers were silent on higher levels leading to any reduced rates of infection.
  
  I’ve been taking D3+Zinc+Mg for a year now, higher dosage over winter. I’ve requested blood tests to confirm my D3 levels are in the 75% percentile of normal.

  Non-promotion of cheap, clearly harmless/safe but strongly evidenced beneficial effects of Vit-D during pandemic is what convinced me that medical-political complex is hopelessly corrupted and/or incompetent.
  
  It costs basically nothing and was clear to anyone who looked into it even in early 2020 that it would save a substantial percentage (in total millions of lives) from covid if universally adopted. Yet aside from one or two 3rd world countries was never officially promoted.
  
  I cannot think of any benign reason for that – and the worst (sadly likely) interpretation, that it was a deliberate policy to prevent dilution of vaccine uber alles messaging, by bureaucrats who believe their job is to control information availability and lie to populations ‘for their own good’. I simply can’t believe they were ignorant of the evidence, and as such it’s everything that is wrong with power-tripping big govt/big Pharma relationship tied up in a neat little bow, and near genocidally criminal to boot.
  
  Millions of unnecessary deaths on the altar of bureaucratic power-tripping should not be allowed to go unpunished.

    The incredible thing – well one of them anyway – is that this is precisely what that idiot, President Hoover, did after the 1929 Crash. By the time FDR took power the highest income tax rate was 70% – under a GOP President. Even FDR criticised the tax and spending levels as being too high.
    
    It’s also the exact opposite of what Keynes recommended, for the same reason as his idea of the State blowing money into a recessionary economy; tax hikes take money out of the private sector. Keynes thought was it insane to increase taxes during a recession when the private sector money supply is already shrinking. He was right on that at least.

The most depressing thing was they still think Cindy will win in 2023 simply writing off all student loans ….. how the hell can this country afford that? And if this is the game being played, then every single university graduate benefited by this process should be bonded to working in NZ for a certain number of years so taxpayers get value for money.       Hi Wayne what you write is true but my categorisation is from a “tyrant” point of view (and yes was exaggerated), however he has done none of these things …. yet.
      
      (Mind you the Uyghur Muslims, who are being surveilled and suppressed, would no doubt have a different viewpoint).
      
      I say “yet” because when and if Xi invades or attacks or blockades Taiwan, there will be large scale deaths. Xi himself states his goal is to reunify Taiwan with the mainland and has given timeframes.
      
      In the meantime like the tyrant he is, he is responsible for the CCP building new bases in contested waters in the South China Sea and kowtowing its neighbours into submission – these nations are not “unified” (as say the West is) because these nations are assess their relationship with China in their own terms. But that means they are weaker.
      
      Yes I get it, and support that NZ needs to maintain diplomatic efforts to persuade China to act as a responsible global citizen …. but we need to do so with our eyes wide open and for example increase defence spending so we do carry a larger stick (in our friendly dealings) particularly to protect our interests and fellow citizens of the South Pacific.     Yep, China’s ancient history is a constant story of expansion and many tribes, cultures, kingdoms became vassals or disappeared from history.
    I find it remarkable that they can try to pretend that the Chinese Empire was not imperialist – just because it was in a poor state in the time of western imperialism. The ancient Dian, the Yue and other kingdoms and people on the periphery vanished as a distinct people.
    If you visit regional museums you can see traces of former ‘barbarian’ peoples who were conquered in the material artefacts on display. Many of these were remarkable cultures in their own right.

  2017 – when she left New Zealand – the social housing waiting list was way way lower than now so expectations were different. In any case she was away several years so mobility may have been less of a housing related factor 5 years ago.
  
  She needs housing for herself and son, two adults so two incomes. Same or better than many looking in the private sector.

I remember when

(Manawatu District) Council have introduced ‘range of Covid-19 Measures’ amid rising cases: Newshub.
Measures include twice a week antigen testing for staff, limits to numbers in meeting rooms, physical distancing where possible and encouraging use of face masks for visitors to council offices, Makino Aquatic Centre and Feilding Library.
These are in the hope that they will allow Council to maintain normal levels of service.

And they don’t seem unreasonable.

I had to laugh at this news,:

You’ll be surprised to learn that The Washington Post, which waged a crusade against Donald Trump for being nice to MBS, is completely silent (as of this writing) on Biden going much further in protecting the Saudi crown prince.

  The USA’s long-standing policy is that heads of state can’t be prosecuted in US courts. Thursday’s declaration was a re-affirmation of that.
  
  It’s realpolitik rather than justice. Your country’s foreign policy becomes very complicated and unpredictable if private citizens are suing your foreign partners’ heads of state. In that way it basically parallels the Logan Act.
  
  But, if I were King of the USA then personally I’d look to change the law slightly. My preference would be to introduce an exception for crimes committed before that person became head of state.
