Why is Jacinda Ardern telling NZ Rugby what to do?

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has agreed with the growing chorus of voices saying the world champion Black Ferns deserve equal pay and equal opportunities to their male counterparts.

A month ago, it was revealed the England women’s rugby team would be paid a $30,000 bonus if they won the World Cup final at Eden Park last Saturday, while the Black Ferns squad were in line to receive nothing.

The All Blacks are in line to win at least $150,000 each should they win their World Cup in France next year.

“From what I have observed of the Black Ferns over a number of years, they’ve asked for nothing more than equality of treatment, you know,” Ardern told journalists in Vietnam, where she is discussing trade with Vietnamese officials before travelling to Bangkok for the Apec Summit.

“Just to have those same opportunities, and they deserve no less, and I feel very strongly about [that].”

Ardern said her stance applied to “every level of the system” and “every level of the game”, including sponsorship, media coverage, merchandise, and even “the meals they have after the game”.

She said the decision on how much they should earn, and if it should match the figure the All Blacks make, is in the hands of New Zealand Rugby.

It hasn’t taken the PM long to jump on the bandwagon of women’s rugby. But unless her government is planning on funding NZ Rugby – and God forbid they do – then what they pay their players, male and female, is none of her business and she should butt out.

People will assume that NZ Rugby made huge money from hosting the Women’s World Cup, but they didn’t. Any profits from the tournament will go to World Rugby. And whilst the final was played in front of a full house, let’s not forget that 20,000 seats were unsold for the semi-final match between New Zealand and France a week earlier.

There’s no doubt the Black Ferns have taken professionalism in their sport to a new level, and they should be compensated for that. But they also need to pay their own way in terms of commercial revenues, as the All Blacks do. The women’s game has gone ahead in leaps and bounds, but that has yet to translate into commercial success.

And just when it does, compensating the players will be a decision of New Zealand Rugby, not the PM or any other opportunistic politician, regardless of which party they represent. Perhaps the PM should focus on reducing child poverty, apparently the very reason she is in politics.

      It’s reported that she called out to the Australian PM (“Hey Albo!”) and got a moment with Joe Biden by sidling up to his table for a quick chat.
      
      It struck me that she is carrying on like a Nerdy Schoolgirl trying to get in with the Cool Kids, and the media in NZ is reporting it as breathless, wonderful diplomacy on our behalf.
      
      It’s actually embarrassing and cringy behaviour, fawned over by a LapDog MSM.

  The solution as usual is simple, all Ardern has to do is mandate that world audiences watch at least as much women playing rugby as watch men’s Rugby. Ahhh, diversity and inclusiveness, bliss.
  In other less enlightened worlds, 3 executed bodies bearing marks of torture were found washed up in Acapulco, not only didn’t Taniwhas get upset but the beaches were left open for people to decide for themselves if they wanted to sunbathe or swim.

  I understand that tickets to the final on Saturday were a maximum of $50. Kids were $5. Because they wanted a full house for theatre. Good on them.
  
  How much do the sponsors pay? 10 percent of what the All Blacks attract? 1 percent?
  
  And the main money spinner… International broadcasting rights. For the men’s world cup these must be worth a couple of billion. What did they pay for the women? Something approaching nil?

  Sport is entertainment.
  
  I tried watching some of the women’s rugby. It was unwatchable. I’ve seen more interesting U15 games.
  
  But then I am not surprised. When by son was playing rep hockey, the U16B team would beat the open women’s A team. Easily.
  
  But now it seems sport is great for politics too. Make a stand for equal pay in women’s sport and she’ll get a whole lot of support from her target audience.

  The Black Ferns are inspirational and their RWC win less than a year out from being pasted by both England and France and having to beat both those teams to win it, is a great comeback story that someone will probably make into a movie one day. Maybe.
  
  However, let’s inject a dose of reality here. The World Champion Black Ferns would be beaten soundly by the Tauranga Boys College First XV and any other decent high school in the country. You can’t fault their commitment or technique, but you can’t coach height, males have massive physical advantages and they are quicker. Much quicker.
  
  The RWC will have cost millions to stage, and the TV rights, sponsorship and advertising will in no way make that up. Professional rugby is a business and it has to be run like one. When the women’s game brings in the same sort of revenue as the mens, then we’ll talk about “equality”.

    Professional cricket in NZ is a business and provincial games are played in front of sparse mostly non paying crowds.
    The crowd that went to watch the women on Saturday was bigger than any cricket match incl 2015 World Cup.

  It comes down to how much those sports generate from sponsors, advertising, tickets.
  
  It wouldn’t surprise me if the World Cup makes a loss- the tickets where extremely cheap- starting at $5 for three games- and the viewership was up due to the final being free to air.
  
  If the ladies play and generate as much as the males then good luck to them but for now, nope – Cindy simple strikes again #cindyjustgo

  If you are slightly interested in the promotion of women’s rugby union you will approach the local rugby sub-unions with financial help for female showering and changing facilities. These sub-unions are mostly broke. The inordinate costs arrived at by having to pay the battalion of central and local government officials to erect such facilities; now that is a problem that should be looked at.

  Good one Tony. The Deputy PM also alluded to better compensation for the women’s team as well. Rugby is a private organisation and should remain so. I understand they collect considerable amounts from the Lottery fund that should go to local organisations.

  Sport is entertainment – no different to watching a movie, attending a concert, playing a game, or reading a book.
  Tom Cruise recently made tens of millions of dollars for starring in a movie. However, Top Gun made USD$1.5B at the box office. If I was to be in a movie I don’t think I would come anywhere near that, hence, I’m not going to be paid millions of dollars even if I “work just as hard as Tom Cruise”.
  If the women think they are getting an unfair deal then I suggest that could split off and run their own affairs.

  Meng Foon is not even a useful idiot. He is useless, as is his team. To this day the maori party website makes the claim that maori DNA is superior to non-maori, and his office will do nothing about it.
  
  Imagine, if you will, the uproar if say, ACT claimed that Asians have higher IQ than maori (they do), that they work harder and are greater contributors to the NZ economy, while being under-represented in the crime statistics and without the benefit of massive and extensive government support (also all true).

    Lodden: More than 20 years ago the authors of the book “The Bell Curve” got attacked relentlessly for arguing – and demonstrating statistically – that whites were more intelligent than American blacks by a statistically significant margin.
    
    There was zero attention to the part of the book that showed that Asians were more intelligent than whites by a similar margin. IIRC, Jews topped the tree – also by a statistically significant margin.

      In the long run, the only way horticulture will thrive in New Zealand is by robotics.
      
      It’s interesting that much of the pioneering work in robotic picking is being done in New Zealand by a company founded as an NZ co-operative but now owned by a German co-operative.
      
      If the NZ industry doesn’t mechanise to robotics more quickly than overseas competitors it will be pushed out of business.

  Here’s a prediction: Within 10 years – possibly sooner – no white New Zealander will be permitted to visit Lake Waikaremoana, arguably the most beautiful place in the North Island, certainly the prettiest lake.

      I understood Willie Jackson was “watering down” the 72 hui response to his He Puapua “co-governance” consultation / conversation with “targeted” Maori Elite, into a paper acceptable to his colleagues to take to Cabinet – then Jacinda would release it for public consultation, the other 83 percent of New Zealanders – but legislation involving that “co-governance” starts its Third Reading in Parliament this afternoon.
      So Willie has missed the bus – I think purposely!

I see the Democrat was elected governor in Arizona despite Republican challenger Kari Lake widely expected to win.
Here’s the thing. Why did counting the ballots take over a week? How is it that counting seems to almost grind to a halt? Then slowly slowly more ballots are found and surprise surprise, they are massively in favour of the Democrat?
Maricopa County took forever and the votes from there on election day were expected, based on exit polling, to favour the Republican. Republicans prefer to vote on election day, democrats prefer mail in ballots. Yet the election day votes also favoured the Democrat!

Doesn’t it seem fishy when vote counting stops and then after many days enough ballots are “found” to put the Democrat over the top? Doesn’t it seem suspicious that vote counting takes days and days and days? In 1862 the presidential election results were posted in a week. Now in 2022 they are still counting ballots?

The fix is in. Again!

  The delay was the voting machines breaking down, the printers not working properly, the thing about unread ballots going to room three, and whatever other excuse Katie Hobbs could find. She is in charge of the voting setup, but she lost control of the machines and does not know what was done to them. Oh, she was also the Democrat Candidate. Fishy? Naahhhhh!
  Add. Ballots were still being handed in 2 days after the closure. They went to room 3 as well, to be counted. It stinks to high heaven, and people wonder why Kari Lake is screaming?

  Vote counting in NZ takes a couple of weeks to finalize and invariably seats change hands when the official numbers are announced.
  Nobody ever grizzles, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone decides the system we’ve used since forever is flawed and kicks up a song and dance.

  Employ my idea of yesterday. About one third of these tenants are great. Another third have occasional problems but are mostly OK. The final third are a nightmare. And I have it on good authority that the nightmare people can be spotted a mile off.
  
  So put the good tenants in the new place. Put the bad tenants somewhere nowhere near anyone but other bad tenants.

  That year the road toll went up not down. OK, one swallow does not a summer make, but there is other evidence that speed is only one of the drivers, including inattention, intoxication, stupid driving, (particularly dangerous overtaking), bad roads….any number of factors

      The police probably think 60% are down to alcohol, and the rest, or most of the rest, are down to excessive speed.

        IIRC excessive speed is the primary or only cause in about 15 percent of fatal crashes, e.g. someone who goes into a 60 kmh bend on the highway at 100 kmh and runs off the road into a tree.

    Ballpark calculations: Average kiwi spends about 100 hours a year driving. Average speed maybe 70km/hr, drop that speed by 1km/hr and increase time on road by 1.5 hours * 5 million = perhaps 7million hours. Humans lifetime is about 400000 hours awake, so 1 km/hr speed drop is wasting about 20 human lifetimes, and is likely not saving that many road deaths.

    That being said, Lithium Ion cells are volatile little buggers, any split, rupture or exposure to oxygen and they burn at 500 degC within 1 second and will not stop until the lithium is used up.

National’s support barely above the 20s in Roy Morgan must have some in 5he party questioning the effectiveness of their leadership.
How does this compare with 2nd term of Labour in the 80s?
One difference is that the public opposition to government has been muted, Ardern may be afraid to go out in public but I don’t think it compares to the open hatred shown the Lange that resulted in him throwing in the towel.
I don’t recall but imagine the media weren’t as partisan in the 80s.

Debs was telling us you can disregard talk of a major fall in house prices. Apparently demand is still very strong in the area she operates. Currently, her office has dozens of qualified buyers looking for homes in the 10 – 20 million dollar price range, but very little to show them.

So much for CoreLogic’s prediction of a 15% decline. LOL!!

  Travelled on Air NZ a couple of weeks ago for the first time in about 5 years.
  Never saw a safety video (probably wasn’t paying attention), but the worst thing about the experience was taking an hour in the queue at Wgtn airport to reach the security check, then the incompetent fools made my wife (in her 70s and with a walking stick) sit down on the floor and take her shoes off.
  If I’d been a bit more forthright in my abuse of the power-crazy little man I would probably have been banned from the flight.

Following last weekend’s Rugby matches, several commentators, including Sir Graham Henry, opined that something needed to be done about the rolling mauls, which have almost become a blight on the game. I would like to put forward some thoughts.
Firstly, the rolling maul is an anachronism which actually breaks a key rule of Rugby: that is, you may not obstruct players from tackling a person carrying the ball. So how come in a maul the ball carrier can be shielded by as many players as you wish? This is a travesty.
My first suggestion would be that the rolling maul should be outlawed, full stop. There is no justification for it, and it is the antithesis of the running play that marks an exhilarating game.
If the maul is retained, then the ball carrier should be at the front, not the rear, as is the case in every other phase of the game. Because this would make it much easier for the opposing team to strip the ball or hold up the player (thereby forcing a turnover), the maul would rapidly fall out of favour anyway.
And lastly, but least preferably, I can see no reason why an opposing team should not be permitted to collapse the maul.
While I’m on the subject of anachronisms, the same thinking should be applied to rucks, which are becoming a nightmare with the increasing frequency of serious injuries. A major tenet of Rugby is that you are not permitted to tackle a player without the ball, yet this is broken all the time in a ruck. Players hurl themselves into opponents who are off the ball, and who frequently have no means to protect themselves. This must surely be outlawed.
Finally, scrum feeds. I was a provincial representative hooker almost too many years ago to recall. In those days, the ball had to be fed straight into the scrum, and the hooker was not allowed to strike until the ball touched the ground. (I was penalised once for striking too early, nearly costing my team a crucial match.) Now the ball is fed almost directly to the second row — goodness knows what the role of the hooker is these days. (Maybe that’s why he now throws into the lineout, to give him something to do!) We’re almost at the point of rugby league scrums. In my opinion, we should make scrums truly contestable again, something which most rules of the game should encourage. Zut alors, we might get some entertainment back!

“Hot wiring” cars by thieving teenagers is primitive compared with this.

The French, Spanish, and Latvian police have arrested 31 suspects over car thefts with fake door locking and starting software systems targeting two French car brands.

The fake system was marketed as an automotive diagnostic solution. It replaced the original software of the cars, allowing doors to be opened and ignition started without the legitimate key fob.

The target car brands haven’t been released. The big three French car makers are Peugeot, Citroen, and Renault.

  Here in Auckland, it seems that most healthcare services have mask-wearing as a policy. Labtests, for example, have a big banner on their front page stating, “Our collection centres are a healthcare service. Please wear your mask when you visit.” And I know of a physiotherapy clinic with the same policy.
  
  But whether this is enshrined in law, or simply a “policy” with no actual teeth to be enforced, I couldn’t say, sorry.

Kathryn Ryan interviews an Auckland University history lecturer, Felicity Barnes, who’s looking at New Zealand, Australian, and Canadian exporters emphasising their countries’ “Briishness” in the 1930’s marketing of exports to the United Kingdom.

To most us that would seem a normal marketing strategy.

“Part of it I think you can explain as pragmatic marketing, expediency … let’s appeal to the British nature of their products,” Barnes said in the interveiw

But it was not just a case of pragmatism, she said. “There’s actually something else going on there, whereby not only by asserting that British sense we’re creating it as well. They’re not just playing on it. They’re actually building a sense of Britishness and a very specific sort as well.”

Ryan:”It’s an act of colonisation is what you are saying.”

Barnes: “Exactly.”

Barnes says other parts of the British empire – Africa, the Caribbean, India – didn’t mobilise that “British idea” to the same extent.

How amazing is that?

Radio NZ in promoting the interview says Barnes is from “Waipapa Taumata Rau, the University of Auckland.”

anyone else notice that all of a sudden, every news bulletin has sound bites of jacinda???? I’ve noticed as I mute everytime she comes on the Radio. hadn’t done that as much for ages. must be an election coming or less favorable polls?

It appears the missile was a Ukraine 5V55K

US President Joe Biden has told reporters it is “unlikely” the missile that killed two people in eastern Poland was fired from Russia.

“There is preliminary information that contests that,” Biden said when asked if the missile had been fired from Russia. “It is unlikely in the lines of the trajectory that it was fired from Russia, but we’ll see.”
