Hey presto … Three Waters becomes Five Waters!

Nanaia Mahuta must not be able to believe her good luck in being blessed with the most gullible and incurious mainstream media any quiet revolutionary could hope for.
Her good luck has continued after Parliament’s Finance and Expenditure Committee dumped its report on Three Waters into the public arena on Friday afternoon.
Such timing is normally seen by journalists as a screaming red flag that the government wants to bury contentious information.
The NZ Herald undoubtedly thought it was onto the subterfuge. It quickly published an article that revealed co-governance had survived the select committee process, despite the widespread opposition expressed in more than 88,000 written submissions.
Its senior writer Thomas Coughlan commented similarly in a tweet:
“[In the] 200-page select committee report on Three Waters, [with] three dissenting views (Nat-Act-Green), Labour’s view can’t even bring itself to use the word ‘co-governance’ once.” …

Astonishingly, the media failed to identify the actual bombshell.
The really radical move in the report — also overlooked entirely by Jack Tame on TVNZ’s Q&A and by Andrew Dickens interviewing Mahuta for Newstalk ZB — was the proposed extension to the scope of Te Mana o Te Wai statements.
Only iwi have the right to issue these edicts, which are binding on the Water Services Entity in their region. That right is denied to non-Maori, who make up the remaining 84 per cent of the population.
The select committee has proposed that such statements, issued exclusively by iwi, should apply not only to freshwater but coastal and geothermal water as well.
So — just like that — Three Waters will become Five Waters. And this extraordinary example of mission creep — well, surge, really — was not even hidden. It appeared on page three of the 200-page report ,,,

As expected, NZTA is about to reduce the 100 kmh speed limit to 80 kmh and in some cases 60 kmh on hundreds of kilometres of State Highways.

  Many of us remember when the speed limit was 80k because of the country’s need to conserve fuel and it was thought that 80k was more efficient than 100k.
  
  Even then in those old vehicles people found it very frustrating, too slow for the cars of the day.
  
  Now in today’s vehicles 80k will be even more frustrating.
  
  Note to the electorate. Never elect socialists. They want to change everything. They will make your life worse all the while feeling they are making your life better.

    Drove the A1/A8 Barossa to Melbourne the other day – 110k SA – 100/110k Vic limits and majority single lane each way – plenty of passing lanes. Sure there are a few potholes in the areas badly hit by the recent floods but well marked – and being fixed pronto. Actual drive time ~ 8 hrs for 750k. Try doing that in this country 🙁

  As long-suffering Tauranga locals will know, the clusterf*ck that is the Te Maunga interchange project will still be years before completion. It has already dragged on, interminably, for more than 7 years and is “estimated” to be complete by December 2023. I highly doubt that will be the case.
  
  I gave up visiting the website years ago, as every time I looked at it the design and layout had changed. it now looks nothing like the original design put forward in John Key’s second term. I know.
  
  Part of the issue is that the Woke Waka Kotahi idiots gave the contract to an Australian outfit, ignoring Fulton Hogan and Downer. Unfortunately the Aussies thought they could simply sub-contract the work to FH and clip the ticket on the way through, but FH (and Downer) both gave them the flick. So the project has limped along for more than 7 years, costing thousands in travel time and extra fuel every single day. Muppets is being too kind to them.

  Some quick googling suggests that there are something like 45 billion km driven by light vehicles per year in this country – so 0.00000008 deaths per km driven.
  
  If I look at 2010, then road toll was 375 and 37 billion km which means over a decade(ish) we’ve actually had something like a 20% improvement in the road toll per km driven.

  I heard a guy on the Hosking show this morning from the AA agreeing with the move. He must be a classmate of Michael Wood. In other words, another brain-dead fuckwit.
  I fail to believe it’s all about road deaths as advertised. If road deaths were the issue, the authorities would be confiscating driver’s licenses and cars from offenders for a very lengthy period and jailing repeat offenders (regardless of racial preference, sexual persuasion, and deprivation level).
  IMO, it’s nothing more than a Money Grab.
  Police Officers will also be too busy filling quotas for Traffic Offences to attend Ramraids, Violent Offending, and Drive-By shooting incidents.

Why did you not press us for a definition of “co-governance” and find us as befert on that as our definition of “hate speech”.
This is probably the week it should all have been happening.

International embarrassment – stardust collapses as just dust – as her Government is caught trying to change fundamental democracy – one person, one vote – to something Willie Jackson has not defined.

  I have basically given up on Luxon. He seems to afraid to challenge this separatist nonsense, and his silence only reinforces the perception he is ok with it.
  Saying they will repeal the legislation and they are working on an alternative, is not the same as coming out hard and saying that this legislation is separatist, and an appalling abuse of a governments majority in favour of a minority group. National stands for 1 person 1 vote and we will not stand to see or democracy undermined in this fashion. After 40 years supporting National, I will now move to ACT, as they seem the only party seriously pushing back on this.

  So interesting that Hunter was the front man for Joe Biden , raking in millions of dollars from the Ukraine and China, making deals where Joe Biden would directly change US policy settings to please his new Chinese friends. Where he brags on tape getting the Ukrainian prosecutor fired who was investigating Burisma.
  
  And the beauty of it all was Trump got impeached for wanting the Biden’s investigated!
  
  If the story had come out Biden would likely have lost the 2020 election. But the media and Big Tech quashed the story as Russian disinformation.
  
  So many lies. Joe Biden and Hunter Biden and the whole family should have faced criminal charges long ago. And yet they impeached Trump for what Biden was doing! Biden was dealing in quid pro quo, not Trump.

  What a pathetic piece of journalism. Tama Potaka is being criticised for a paper he wrote when he was at university in the mid-1990’s, almost 30 years ago. Surely he can’t be held to account for that if life experiences have changed his perspective.
  
  As Churchill said “If you’re not a socialist at 18, you have no heart. If you’re not a conservative at 30, you have no brain.” Evidence suggest that Tama Potaka has a very good brain!
  
  What this DOES show however is the depths the media will go to in trawling through someone’s past to find a “gotcha”. That’s something every National candidate needs to be aware of.

    That’s not the impression I get pdm. Luxon delegates jobs to his MP’s and lets them get on with doing them. That’s why he doesn’t comment on every issue that’s going on. There’s a weekly meeting of MPs and their senior advisors on policy issues. There’s plenty of “healthy debate” in caucus.

    They have been conditioned to believe there is an immediate existential threat from the pace and extent of (theorised) climate change.
    So you can’t negotiate with these types, there is no compromise.
    If you really believed their starting point then it is a matter of life or DEATH. To protect your family and unborn generations, there is no effort that cannot be justified.
    They take on the moral authority of enlightened saviours.
    There is more wide-eyed fanaticism here than any patriotic war of self defence. They don’t need to take the personal risk of a walk into shellfire against an enemy which seeks to maim or kill them; they only need to throw paint or lay down and they are HEROES.
    
    On the other side of the coin, I see them as the masses of duped or smaller core of manipulative people who swallow or spout this line: it is just a tool of socialism dressed up as being about the environment. Oddly, wealth redistribution, and mix in some fighting against white supremacism and the patriarchy for good measure.
    Of course I am all for air and water purity, and hate pollution, but these idiots are more about social revolution and the militant “cause” than getting out there and planting trees themselves.

A jeweller in Ellerslie was ram-raided yesterday, in broad daylight. Interestingly though, this chap had tried to get support from the Ram Raid Protection Fund, but had been turned down:

Epsom MP and Act leader David Seymour said Ellerslie Jewellers had asked Police Minister Chris Hipkins for support back in August, but had been turned away.

Seymour provided an email sent by Hipkins’ office to Ellerslie Jewellers & Engravers on August 22, which said: “The funding available to access the $6 million support package to help protect businesses from ram raids is not contestable, and retailers are not able to apply for funding.”

The email went on to state that police are identifying eligible shops based on “past victimisations” and after “weighted criteria” to prioritise which shops receive assistance first.

“This approach has been chosen because it’s targeted, it creates equity by removing barriers to applying to the fund, and because evidence shows that once a location has been victimised it’s more likely to be re-offended against unless an intervention occurs.”

This is outrageous! The fund is intended to help retailers take precautions against ram-raiders, but you have to have been through the trauma of a ram raid first before you can get any money. That is truly bizarre.

This ram raid’s on YOU Chris Hipkins; the buck stops at your desk. If ever proof was needed that the Government’s priorities on crime are totally out of whack, here it is. Labour really is soft on crime, and criminals.

Build prisons ASAP. Drop cultural reports for sentencing. Evict problem tenants and families. Move them into 2nd tier social housing. Consequences to long term beneficiaries who breed a second generation. If people can’t parent, then break up the families. Punishments to fit the crime. Home detention only for truly minor victimless crimes. Police to attend burglaries and facebook market sales of stolen goods. Police presence on the street. Stations in CBD areas. Allow shop keepers to defend themselves with violence if need be. Go after the gangs (they are not ‘whanau’). Make sure kids are in school. Criminal proceeds confiscations ramped up – take the bikes and SUVs every time. Lean on gangs with paramilitary policing. Take their property and possessions. Reward those in school and employment. Set a limit on time spent on welfare and enact sanctions. Unapologetically support the productive and law-abiding and be clear there is zero tolerance for parasites and predators.

So the council is now demolishing the toilets between Dixon Street and Manners Street because the area is frequented by ‘undesirables’. But no new toilets at nearby Inglewood Place will be built until 2024! And the new toilets are likely to attract the same sort of undesirables. Seems the obvious answer ie more police presence is too radical. Also the Opera House toilets are woefully inadequate especially for ladies.

    Let’s say it’s 20c a bottle. Many people really can’t be bothered about that. Therefore bottle mining will become a valuable enterprise for some.
    
    That’s fine if the bottle miners clean up after themselves, but there is little incentive to do so, so they won’t.

  On the subject of recycling, does anyone else have the same problem as me and partner? That is we have huge difficulties reading the numbers in the little triangles on the bottom of plastic items. (Specsavers will tell you there’s nothing wrong with our eyesight!)
  If we just can’t make it out we generally put in the rubbish bin, as we’ve heard that incorrect recycling can contaminate a whole truckload of recyclables….

New Zealand is a democracy; our constitution provides for one person-one vote. Willie Jackson should be firmly reminded of this fact.   It is amazing the number of people in NZ just can’t swim. There’s water everywhere.
  Then we come to the rips. Don’t fight it, go with it. When it stops, swim sideways and come in at another place.
  Panic is what makes people drown. You just wear yourself out.
  Get the kids into the water. Get them to pools with a swim teacher.
  Having said that, I never went to a teacher. I learnt by myself swimming in the Waikato River. Not really a place I would swim in now.

Would be happy to pay rates or pool entry fees for more good local small to medium sized outdoor community pools Like St Erin pools which is always over subscribed. You cans do some lessons but you really need regular access to a pool or similar to really be a strong swimmer.

      I learned to swim when I was 5 – in 1947. My grandparents had a bach at Little Waihi – a settlement over the hill from Maketu, near Te Puke. (it is now known as Bledisloe Part – and no, not a Maori name 🙂 – but I’m sure it has one, as it is steeped in Maori history ) Beautiful place.

America is developing technology to tap geothermal energy far, far below that harnessed now.

Quaise Energy hopes to drill 12 miles (19.3km) deep, which compares with the deepest man-made hole on Earth, the 7.5 miles (12kmd) deep Kola Super Deep bore in Russia.

Quaise Energy is a spin-off from MIT (the real one, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

Quaise plans within six years to have a coal plant refurbished and, using geothermal heat, producing 300 megawatts of electricity. The Wall Street Journal says it estimates this will cost about half a billion (US) dollars (about $NZ820 million at current rates).

Another resource for Maori to claim! Why not? They’ve won part of the radio wave spectrum above. There are riches below.

Perhaps economic hope, too, for Rotorua as a whole, now that Labour has all but wrecked it as a tourist holiday spot.

    Inand: There are a good number of such holes already; failed wildcat oil wells.
    
    The last well I ever worked on is one such, Rere-1, north west of Gisborne. When we were drilling it, the drilling mud at surface was far too hot to put one’s hand into. I believe the bottom hole temperature was close to 120 C (the mud would of course be boiling at that depth, but lose heat on its way to the surface).
    
    I believe there have been a number of proposals to utilise the free heat of Rere and other failed oil wells, drilled at great expense. Rere was funded by the taxpayer.

  300MW is a tiny piddling amount. But as a trial for a new tech it could be good if it can be scaled up to 5 to 10x that power.
  
  The hassle with some of these heat wells is ensuring the heat keeps flowing in. Heat can only flow through the rock at a specific rate once the heat adjacent to the hole is removed it takes time to heat up. Therefore while the heat itself might be as close to infinite as you can get, the rate at which you can extract it is limited.

Resource management act (RMA) replacement is being announced today.

My prediction is that this is going to be disastrous, and hand disproportionate power to Maori who are already the biggest block to development in this country. Pay the iwi to authorise your building / construction project.

There will be little to solve existing issues that affect normal people (eg noise and air pollution due to higher density housing).

Labour are just so abysmal expect disaster!

Government gaslighting Kiwis with claim they are “listening” on Three Waters

Nanaia Mahuta is gaslighting the more than 80,000 New Zealanders who took the time and effort to submit on her flawed Three Waters Bill, which will take community-owned water assets from councils and put them into the control of unaccountable and expensive entities.

Mahuta “thank[ed] the committee for its careful consideration of more than 80,000 submissions” and claims that “extensive changes have been proposed” in a statement published on the Beehive website and sent to media.

“The dishonesty of Ms Mahuta knows no bounds” says Taxpayers’ Union co-founder Jordan Williams. “This is gaslighting at its finest.”

“Far from ‘carefully listening’ to submitters, the Government majority on the Committee specifically blocked officials from reading, reviewing, and summarising the 68,661 submissions from our supporters.”

“First they made us print and deliver hard copy submissions – rather than accept by email – then they didn’t even bother to get officials to read or summarise them. The Committee even turned down our offer to use software to pull out unique points submitters made. In what world is that ‘listening’ to the public?”

“The number of submissions ranks this bill among the most submitted on in the history of our Parliament. But the Government majority cut short the time listening to submitters – travelling the country for just five days. As I told the Committee – it is pathetic that we can do better, getting out on the road for more than a month on a roadshow tour to listen to New Zealander’s concerns.”

“Ms Mahuta also claims that ‘extensive changes have been proposed’. What nonsense. Rather than promote democratic accountability, the proposed changes actually double down. Te Mana o te Wai and Te Mana o te Wai statements will be even more powerful and tie the hands of the half of the ‘Regional Representative Groups’ who are accountable to elected councils. The Government has ‘listened’ to councils, so more council representatives can sit on the ‘Regional Representative Groups’ – but the 50/50 requirement for unaccountable iwi appointments remains the same.”

“One of the changes is for councils to have annual ‘shareholder meetings’. That in and of itself is dishonest misrepresentation – councils still won’t have any rights of ‘shareholders’ or ownership. There will be absolutely nothing to talk about, and certainly no control exercised.”

“We are glad to see the Green Party’s minority report making many of the same points as the Taxpayers’ Union. They say the councils should have the equivalent level of control to a council-controlled organisation, akin to WaterCare, and the C4LD proposal supported by the Taxpayers’ Union.”

“Ultimately, Three Waters will cost ratepayers with higher water costs, more bureaucracy, no local control, and less democracy. It needs to be stopped.”

The result is we become New Venezuela or New Zimbabwe.

The socialists need to be stopped at the next election, or all is lost…
