What a load of crap our Health Minister and the Labour Government are , instead of getting out and fixing the balls up that he and Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister have made its always the previous Government’s fault or something that was not his making.

      I see a large problem is the access to a GP/family doctor: people wait weeks for an appointment, the cost is high, quality not necessarily great, in large practices like ours, you don’t have the luxury of having just one GP… people got smart and it didn’t take long to compare this with arriving in ED. Until recently, almost guaranteed of being seen, investigated and treated within six hours, it’s free, you will be seen by a specialist or a junior training in the field, probably over investigated for free…. what’s not to like??? Covid destroyed primary care and this is the price we pay

        @Close… Add the inaccessibility of GP’s during covid and post covid. Also, people became too scared to visit in case they got covid. Stayed home and got sicker then became ED admissions.

        Making doctors inaccessible during a pandemic was as sensible as sending soldiers home when was was declared. This generations opportunity to advocate for healthy living as a way to reduce risk from … pretty much most things. And instead we scared the living daylights out of everyone, and isolated them for good measure and mandated vaccines (don’t get me wrong: I’m ok with vaccines, just hate mandates with a passion). Oh and we shut down free speech and fired (effectively) some people for saying what they thought or having autonomy over their bodies. I’d say given the covid response, the health system is in surprisingly good nick – on the basis that doctors, nurses and allied staff still go to work most days.

Who in their right minds would completely shut down hospitals “waiting” for a rush, when they could have carried on until things picked up and ops etc needed to be cancelled/wards needed to be taken over for Covid cases. #ClownShow

Car thefts in Chistchurch are out of control.

My partner’s son had his car stolen yesterday afternoon, in daylight, from a shopping mall carpark. This is 4 months after his previous car was written off after being extensively damaged in an attempted theft in the same carpark.

My partner spoke to one of her police contacts last night. He told her that police patrols regularly spot the stolen cars, but the kids take off at high speed and the police cannot pursue them.

This policy of no pursuit is just wrong. These kids know they are untouchable.

    The car has now been found. Broken window and (of course) ignition ripped out. We are going to pay half of the cost of an alarm and mobiliser. He has a Toyota Aqua, the top of the list for stolen cars.

        According to this 2018 UN data, New Zealand has the highest motor vehicle theft rate globally (apart from Bermuda which only has a population of 60,000 ). Seems incredible. And it will have worsened since 2018!

        For comparison:
        
        USA – 228.9
        Australia – 214.1
        Germany – 60.7
        Japan – 28.1
        
        This explains why it feels like it is out of control. The data proves it.
        
        Hell, this would be a great question for National to ask the Justice Minister in Parliament. “Is the Minister aware that New Zealand has the world’s highest motor vehicle theft rate? Is he intending to do anything about it?”
        
        (The data would need to be reviewed. I still find it incredible that the theft rate here is higher than places like Mexico.)

    Apparently they’re pretty simple to break into, but also I think from memory they have a relatively narrow wheelbase and can therefore fit through smaller gaps when making a getaway?

      Just a point. You cannot have a narrow wheelbase. Wheelbase is the measurement between the front and rear axles. The measurement between wheels on the same axle is the “track”.

    It was stolen from Barrington Mall. The young guy works night shift at the Warehouse.
    
    My suggestion would be to get your son to fit a good imobiliser and alarm. About $550 fitted.

        Barrington Mall is a nightmare. Some kids walked into the Warehouse last week and walked out with bags of stuff. The staff called the police but the kids were long gone when they arrived. As they walked out of the shop they said to the staff and the security guard “You can’t touch us.”

        I don’t take my car out anywhere at night any longer. I uber. I have secure parking at home. I would not even consider parking my car out on the street in Christchurch.
        
        This CAN be stopped. Tell the police to chase the stolen cars. If the kids kill themselves that is unfortunate, but it is not the fault of the police. And then lock them up for a minimum of 12 months. If they are younger than 14, charge the parents also. I think you would find that kids would stop stealing cars.

        Bene: Some years ago a guy stabbed and killed a little scrote who had repeatedly tagged his garage door. On the night in question, there was two of them, and they ran down what they knew was a cul-de-sac. They were almost certainly planning to mug the guy when he followed them…Unfortunately for everyone concerned, the guy had a knife. He did time for manslaughter.
        
        Tagging of garage doors apparently ceased for some time after that.
        
        And before I get attacked, NO of course I do not condone the killing. But I also understand the killer’s massive frustration at having his garage tagged repeatedly. The scrote in question had a mother in Australia, Dad long gone.

        I had a wall that was constantly tagged. Had dreams of staking out the wall and getting the little shits. Police knew who was doing it but was no point as the parents didn’t care and the kids were too young.

      I’m not sure a wee blinky light will deter thieves from smashing the window and ruining the ignition to get it started.
      
      By all means put the immobiliser in, but a good old steering lock bar is a highly visible signal that even if they do break in, they won’t get anywhere

      My Aqua was taken from my driveway, and I didn’t even know until the police called me in the morning to tell me (just out of bed) that my car was dumped a short distance from my house. Might have not had enough gas in the tank, is a theory, and they just steal another.
      
      No immobiliser, or alarm, and key start in these imports, so they smash the quarter glass and break the ignition.
      Seen footage from another person of their Aqua being stolen from their driveway, and timing it….30 seconds from first approaching the car and driving it away!!.
      
      We now using a steering wheel lock, and park inside the gate, well inside the property and lock the gate (i.e. changed our behaviour), and installed an alarm and immobiliser. Had to pay insurance for repairs as well too.
      
      Feeling sorry for the kids due to poverty and boredom, or blaming Covid even, is garbage.
      Like the food bank that was robbed, the food was being sold by the thieves.
      They are scum.
      This is purely selfish, destructive and awful behaviour that needs to have consequences.
      
      At the moment, the chances of getting caught seem low, and the impacts of being caught are negligible. Until both these things change, it won’t get much better.
      Even if you put up bollards, they just walk into the store in daylight with a hammer instead.
      Someone needs to die before perhaps Labour might awake from their slumber.

        They used to make steering wheel locks that emitted a high pitched scream that would pretty much blow your ear drums if you tampered with it. Probably illegal now but the thought of making some obnoxious scrote go deaf for a while really appeals to me.

  After I was hijacked in Jan 2002 (in South Africa) my replacement car was fitted with a gear lock (the previous one had one as well) and had a factory-fitted alarm, we also fitted it with an anti-hijacking switch (a switch in a hidden location the driver would have to press within a minute or so of the car starting or it would cut-out the engine).
  
  The idea was that if you were hijacked, and they made you drive the car, you could press the switch and still be able to drive (i.e. they would not shoot/torture you to reveal the location) but as soon as you were out of the car they could only go a shortish distance before the car would cut out.

      IRD has generally managed itself quite successfully. By and large its IT transformation (started under a National government) has been successful and has given it flexibility to deliver on Government policies such as during Covid. Similarly with WINZ IT operations. Failure of IRD and WINZ IT operations on the scale of the failure of the teachers payroll system would be a major disaster for New Zealanders.

  A&Es have triage in place but the numbers of equally injured and seriously ill just keep mounting up without the staff to handle them.

The government is finally doing something to reduce the social housing waiting list.

Last couple of months the number of exits from the social housing waiting list has increased sharply. Surely more going into social housing. But no.

For example, in August, 531 from the waiting list were housed and 1161 were no longer on the waiting list, including those moved into social housing. That same month 1563 new households were added to the waiting list.

Anyone else think the Minister had a word with her department? Reminded them there’s an election next year and the stats are making her so sad.

The below link allows different months and time ranges to be entered, so easy to see what the figures for exits etc were 3 months ago for example.

Newshub survey on whether you want tax cuts – 82% said no. How is this possible? Surely every worker wants to pay less tax?

Is it a result of a fear campaign saying tax cuts will crash the economy like the UK? (Which was of course due to overspending not cutting taxes)

Was it just poor people thinking that tax cuts are for rich pricks? When tax cuts help the poor the most as they are anti inflationary compared to one off payments.

The other interesting going was that this survey attracted 55k votes. Normally they get around 5k. I suspect this is some kind of deliberate cyber attack to push a result as desirable to back up the current mismanagement by robberson but it all seems a bit strange.

  If you’re really worried about serious crime (ie serious assaults, gun violence, murder) don’t go to MS, LA, KY, AL, MO or SC. They top the tables for serious crime. And all are red states.

    Looks like each list is slightly different (prob using different definitions, years etc). But St Louis does seem to consistently be a place to avoid.

    My take is that the main drivers of serious crime in the US are social deprivation, substance abuse, and access to guns. Not which political party represents you.
    
    The red states tend to be poorer (for example see my earlier list of MS, LA, KY, AL, MO and SC) so that goes to social deprivation. But there’s plenty of social deprivation in rich states too (Detroit and parts of Chicago and LA being simple examples).
    
    I don’t believe that, to use the example you cite, that New Orleans changing from a Democrat mayor to a Republican mayor would make much difference to crime rates. Neither party appears to have a solution to social deprivation, or substance abuse, or would put a dent in criminal’s access to guns.

        And I agree with Tom that even within states and cities, there are some parts of states/cities that are worse than others.

      I see the usual suspects in Democrat partisanship, Dana Millbank and now Krugman, both picking this up and running with it in the MSM.
      
      The simple fact is that across the USA the Democrats are getting smashed over the issue of rapidly rising crime and their “ideas” that have contributed to it: bond changes and dropped charges that see arrestees back on the street in hours, early prisoner release and so forth. Hell, in my old home town of Chicago the new “Safe-T Act” has things like robbery and even 2nd degree murder as “non-detainable offenses” FFS.
      
      And just as with Third Way’s BS the rest of the state of Illinois is a hell of a lot safer than Chicago. The whole point of looking at this issue by state rather than by city or county is an effort to obscure what’s really happening and create a Democratic friendly talking point in the process.
      
      Remove those “Blue” cities and those “Red” states look even safer.
      
      The people leaving those places certainly are not fooled by such crap.

I noticed that Grant Robertson is questioned harder than Jacinda in the post cabinet press conferences, one was what he thought were the shortfalls or failures after 5 yrs of Labour Govt. Which he managed to spin around into what he thought they had done well. Also why is it you can clearly hear the questions being asked by the media in Grant’s interview but in Jacinda they are always muted, afraid it will show she never answers the questions?

Just caught up with a bestie from tennis who resides out at St Heliers.
She was telling me they’ve had at least nine ramraids there in the last few months, and then completely unprovoked on Saturday night, some drunken lowlife stabbed a couple of people in the new 4Square Supermarket. One seriously!!

She blames the government for closing the local Police Station.

As I said to her, they have far more pressing priorities these days….

One thing I found interesting about the new UK Pm.
He said he was going to sort out the terrible economic situation the country found itself in.
As I recall he was the chap responsible for the economy up until he resigned about four months ago over unrelated matters.
Imagine if Grant Robertson resigned now over some perceived scandal that brought down the PM and reappeared as PM at the end of February and said he was going to fix the economy?

      Supermarkets have economies of scale that those other options don’t have. But I suspect a lot of the value from those economies of scale sticks with the supermarket owner, not the customer (and certainly not with the suppliers).
      
      I’m not against supermarkets. Clearly they provide a valuable service or we wouldn’t all be using them so much. But I do think there’s a lack of competition there that creates higher prices for us customers and higher returns for owners than might be the case in other countries.
      
      (Note: New Zealand markets do tend to be characterised by two dominant players who collectively have 75%-85% of the total revenue pool, then a few smaller fringe players who split the rest, provide the fig-leaf appearance of competition, but in truth are not able to exert commercial pressure on the two dominant players because they lack the economies of scale. Supermarkets is just one example of this.)

        We often buy our vegetables from the Avondale Sunday Market.
        It’s somewhat cheaper than supermarkets because the market gardeners bring their stuff in from Pukekohe and cut out various middle men.
        Also because a lot of Asians shop there there’s ingredients for Asian cooking.
        Interestingly where I live in Mangere Bridge used to be a market garden area, but it’s all housing and cemeteries now except for strawberries.

      kk – there are many books on “human endurance” that are amazing reads. A lot of them have something to do with the sea. “Survive the Savage Sea” by Douglas Robertson, “Once is Enough” by Miles Smeeton for example. Although Shackleton must rate as one of the best.

        The chap has few strings to his bow being Thai with less than flash English.
        He wasn’t complaining. He had steady income, but I knew it was a rip off.
        However
        There was no way he was going to rock the boat.
        About twenty years ago my wife was offered $5/hr to work in a Thai restaurant. She knew these people and they knew all her friends. They’d all get together at each other’s houses so there’s no question of going to the Labour Dept and complaining. She’d wind up with no mates.
        There’d be other people who’d work for that money.
        Every now and then there’s an item in the paper about someone who’s finally hauled before the courts for underpaying staff for years.

  As Milo pointed out, you would think Universities in the US have such a rate of rape that it was worse than in African unconventional wars were rape is used as in instrument of war.
  Stats for sexual assaults look horrible, until you learn that ‘unwanted attention’ counts these days. Kind of like how words are equated to physical violence.

  Nurse Louisa Akavi was missing, believed captured by ISIS for 5-1/2 yrs before the government put out an appeal to find her against the advice of Red Cross.
  In both cases people worked behind the scenes to facilitate their releases.
  In the case of the two people in Iran the strategy worked.

  Perhaps the actual number has nurses has increased, but that’s only part of the equation. What matters is how effective they are.
  
  The effective number of nurses has DECREASED because:
  * they are now also doing the low level jobs that others were doing (nurse aides making beds etc).
  * huge numbers of senior nurses have left, leaving a far less effective workforce of junior nurses.
  
  In some of the specialised wards, over half the nurses have a lot of experience and provide leadership. When a nurse of 10+ years leaves (and many have in the last year) then the nursing capability is damaged by far more than just losing a nurse.

Stuff headline earlier today: “Kiwi influencers who disappeared in protest-stricken Iran for four months ‘safe and well’ after being detained”.

Eh? I thought NZ had “relatively good” relations with Iran (we’ve had visits by the Iranian Foreign Minister in recent years and dialogue still occurs to this day), if so what a strange way for Iran to treat NZ citizens?

Anyway after some googling found this gem of a documentary, “Shah and Shahbanou of Iran state visit to New Zealand 1974”.

By crikey NZ laid on a stately welcome for the Shah and Shahbanou! Check out some of the well known people and sights of the time!

Admittedly I was young enough not to remember this visit but I still remember school bus visits to the “murder house” (just kidding) on Willis St at approx the 20 min mark!

How does a decent society deal with a “character” like William Mosen?

We think ourselves too nice for the death penalty.
We think ourselves too nice to impose the “harm” of preventative detention on a person.

But when we think these quaint thoughts we are deluding ourselves.

There really are people like William Mosen and, as a society, we have to have effective ways to deal with them.

Shutting our eyes does not make the William Mosens of the world go away.

In a statement today, the IPCA said the investigation found no evidence of criminal offending. However, the officer did breach the police Professional Distance Policy by engaging in sexual activity with one of his subordinates.
Pardon?

The IPCA said the officer received “an employment sanction” for the behaviour, without providing further detail.
1News has approached police for comment.

For me, the Covid hoax was the turning point.

In particular, when socialists decided that I was to be locked down under house arrest, and all my freedoms under the Bill of Rights were to be stolen from me for an indeterminate period of time, this was when The CAKE decided that enough was enough.

Mr Farrar advocated hugging a socialist in a recent post, because he thought that their intentions may be good.

Pol Pot argued that he had good intentions. He said that he never intended that one quarter of Cambodia’s population should starve or be murdered under his rule. Nonetheless, this happened.

It doesn’t matter if the socialists intend good things. What matters is what they actually do. Alas, what they do is almost 100% bad.

Every aspect of life is being vandalised by these socialist saboteurs. Education has been burnt to the ground. The health service is no longer fit for purpose. Crime is out of control. The economy is slowly sinking to the abyss. The New Zealand dollar should be renamed the peso.

It’s a train wreck. Cindy is responsible for this state of affairs. I hope she is hounded out of office, and better still out of the country.

New Zealand has enjoyed a great inheritance from out forbears, who strived for our prosperity and freedoms. These socialist vandals are burning this great legacy to the ground, in just a few short years.

Do not collaborate with the clowns. Their path leads to serfdom.

If Labour win the next election, all is lost.

One more rant, while I’m on a roll.

I can almost understand the Covid circus. The zero covid nutjobs were irrational, but perhaps during a period of mass hysteria, this temporary insanity could be seen as understandable.

Now the dust has settled. In my view, it is no longer understandable to say that the insane actions taken were reasonable.

Zero covid nutjobs were a dime a dozen at one stage. Where did they all go? China?

If I had argued for such an idiotic position, I would like to think that I would be big enough to now apologise.

I haven’t seen one zero covid nutjob apologise yet. Not one!

The advocates for the period of mass insanity have gone quiet. For sure, this is better than bellowing out idiotic propaganda slogans, as they were for the best part of 2.5 years, but still it isn’t good enough.

Where are the mea cupla’s?
