I see that U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty has ordered NIAID Director Anthony Fauci, former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, and other leading federal officials in charge of the response to Covid to be deposed (testify under oath).

This relates to public officials pressuring social media companies to violate citizen’s free speech rights guaranteed under the 1st Amendment.

Fauci is donkey deep in this, and he’s slippery. When a written statement was required as part of discovery he “forgot” to sign it while it somehow managing to have it signed by an underling.

Bravo Kate McNamara from the NZ Herald. Has the smoking gun in the Mahuta Affair been found (Paywalled):

Government minister Nanaia Mahuta put her young relative Waimirirangi Ormsby on a list of candidates for a paid appointment to the working group that produced the He Puapua report, documents released to the Herald under the provisions of the OIA indicate.

A briefing document prepared by Te Puni Kōkiri (the Ministry of Maori Development) in 2019 states that early in the process of choosing appointees for the working group, Mahuta, then Māori Development Minister, identified potential candidates to her officials.

It also illuminates an appointment process whereby Mahuta selected the candidates to take to the Cabinet’s Appointments and Honours Committee for formal agreement.

Mahuta declared her conflict of interest in the appointment of Waimirirangi Ormsby (nee Koopu-Stone) to the Cabinet Committee, which was chaired by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. But the appointment remains contentious for several reasons.

Mahuta recently suggested to the media that decision-making for the appointments was made by officials. It’s also controversial because the Cabinet Manual – which guides Government Ministers in matters of conflict of interest including the appearance of a conflict – recommends, though the language is not absolute, that where a minister has a conflict of interest and also has ministerial responsibility, mitigation should go farther than a simple declaration of interest.

Last month, Mahuta told reporters that questions about the appointment of Waimirirangi Ormsby should be directed to the department: “That’s a matter for Te Puni Kōkiri, there were a number of names that were put up in relation to, I think, the working group you’re referring to, and that was last term. Yeah, so there were a number of names with a number of requisite skills and a number of considerations but the point at which I saw that, by recollection, was at the point where a shortlist was made and those decisions were made by the department.”

The briefing document of May 28, 2019, prepared for Mahuta, stated: “We ask that you consider the range of potential appointees, and select a total of five individuals, who you wish to put forward for appointment. When you have selected the individuals you wish to appoint, the next stage of the process is for us to confirm their availability and willingness to be appointed.”

It appears that a long-list of names was attached to the briefing but was redacted. The briefing also noted: “you have previously identified a number of potential appointees you would like to consider”.

Last week, Mahuta declined to answer questions about the discrepancy between her comments and the briefing.

A spokesperson said “there’s nothing further to add to previous comments to [the] NZ Herald on this question.”

There is a clear discrepancy between what Nanaia Mahuta told media a few months ago, and what Kate McNamara has disclosed. The PM should be getting her Minister in for a “please explain”, but of course she is off the grid for the next few days, headed to the ice. How convenient, that the PM won’t be around to answer questions in Parliament!

Last night I was browsing Maori TV and came across a story of violence where a gang member gave his partner the bash for months until she died.
He got life which is more than 10 years and less than 20.
And the womans parents asked why and how.
Any chance we can get the death penalty back?

How can you be sure that this Government will not start to minimize what sentences hardened criminal have to do, while I acknowledge that community service is the lower level of crime and Covid-19 was the cause of many hours 81,000 being remitted under the now-expired Epidemic Preparedness Notice because of difficulty with the restrictions making it difficult for sentences to be completed It seems the Minister is only to willing to make out they are only minor infringements and not worth making a fuss over.

    Eight weeks ago Liz Truss was the right person for the job as decided by the Conservative Party membership.
    As I recall before those people had a chance to vote on the matter Mr Sunak was the preferred choice of the same people who installed him as leader this time too & nobody else stood against him.
    It’s obvious the 1922 Club tweaked the rules to ensure there was only one contender.

  What I cannot understand is how an otherwise intelligent (I assume) person – Mr Sunak – is so willing to drive his society into the maw of social destruction with the spectre of CBDCs. And seem so excited about it. Now, I do pause and wonder if I’m the one who is off-balance and wearing the tinfoil hat too tight. But then what of the centuries and centuries of human experience that demonstrate that government and elites almost always abuse their power? Has this just magically stopped? Then what of Sunak? Is he slightly sociopathic (he’s a politician after all)? Is he more of a specialist/technician (college, then finance, then politics) and isn’t that widely read/experienced (that would be an indictment on Oxford, Stamford, and his Fulbright scholarship)? Or perhaps he just lives in another world (his wife is one of the wealthiest in woman the UK; they are the 222nd wealthiest people in the UK according to wiki (I don’t get how the math works there)) and things operate differently there, and we don’t understand that? I have no issue with his wealth per se – the rights that secure his property and the same that secure mine. But then what explains the desire to go and mimic China? From a Brexiteer no less.

Yesterday Master Mariner mentioned the Doomsday Glacier. I have heard of this so started looking. It seems the glacier is part on land and part in the sea, although I could not find out how much. The part in the sea has already displaced it’s own weight, but the fruitloops are predicting a sea level rise of 3 meters if it all melts.
I find that hard to believe. 3 millimeters yes. The ocean is 70% of the planet. The glacier is big but the ocean is way bigger.
Any Greens out there to enlighten me? Or is this all just more scaremongering?

  It has been pulsing for the last 2 centuries (at least).
  
  Our results suggest that sustained pulses of rapid retreat have occurred at Thwaites Glacier in the past two centuries. Similar rapid retreat pulses are likely to occur in the near future when the grounding zone migrates back off stabilizing high points on the sea floor.

Watched Grant Robertson on the AM show this morning. If you believe him (and I don’t) they have put 40% more money into the health system since National was in power and have 20% more frontline staff. We also have 300 more nurses since end of covid (although I suspect this is just misleading, I thing 300 in and 100s out).

Now if this is true I think we need to immediately stop hiring and spending because if more staff and more money equals longer ques and less operations, clearly something else is the problem.

Nobody seems to want to work the hours required and feel the “me” time and recovery time should come out of the paid 40 hour week.   From the story, it doesn’t sound like this is actually an initiative between MPI and this iwi, it sounds more like they are taking matters into their own ends. Which is likely to be counter-productive, especially if they believe they have the legal right to stop, search and seize.     I can’t remember if there was something wrong with the meat or not or if it stopped for some reason.

Transport Minister Michael Wood recently claimed he was a regular user of public transport and someone used the OIA to ask if this was true.

In response Wood said he had used his AT Hop card 22 times in the last five months, so that’s about once a week.

I would consider that to be an ocassional user, rather than a regular user, as Wood claimed.

I tried to post on the Daily Blog, where socialists such as the “Bomber” and Comrade Trotsky post.

My post never appeared. Fair enough, it’s their blog, they can do what they like.

However, their hypocrisy is interesting to me. Both of these characters make a huge song and dance about being socialists who support freedom of speech. Personally, I don’t trust them. Indeed, I don’t trust any authoritarian socialist with upholding people’s human rights. History is against them.

I might as well copy the post in question here, so that you can see what “Bomber” et al considers worthy of being banned:

Socialism is a love of huge government.

This is interesting. What mental illness would cause anyone to want huge bureaucracies bullying them?

The “Bomber” gives a clue in his postings. He supports huge transfers of “free” stuff from those who make things, to the looters, moochers and grifters. Note that none of the goods and services were “free” to produce – but they should be “free” to him, and other fellow moochers.

The basis of this sense of entitlement appears to be the deadly sin or envy, with a solid splash of greed on top. The deadly sin of foolish pride also has a role to play. The socialists’ pride says that the person who worked for the goods and services don’t deserve to keep them. They are inferior to the moocher, so deserve to be expropriated.

When you think about it, the love of bureaucrats is a peculiar tick. The problem is that the socialist is typically incapable of the self-reflection required to realise that their love of looting is not some kind of altruism.

The socialist claims that their entitlement and greed is actually some kind of kindness.

The socialist is consumed by envy, so such an extent that they wish to close down the productive members of society, such as farmers.

Alas, nothing will convince the socialist that they could be wrong. Empirical evidence of the complete failures of centralisation throughout history are met with the reply that “It will be different next time.”

It won’t. These “Bomber” theories would leave you digging the dirt for wild turnips with your bare hands to survive.

Ho hum.

Tonight on State TV1 at 8.30 comes a programme packaged as an expose of “white collar” crime, but to many of us on the Right it will look more like a State-media diversion from voter concern about soaring violent crime.

A preview of tonight TV’ documnetary, “ Crime – Need v. Greed,” was given in an RNZ interview of co-producer Tim McKinnel. You can listen to it at the link below.

McKinnel says in it : “White collar crime is often, if not exclusively, driven by greed, rather than more traditional types of crime which tend to be driven by desperation and poverty and helplessness – those sorts of things.”

Sympathetic Red Radio interviewer Emile Donovan mentions “Les Miserables” and calls the white-collar crime numbers used by McKinnel as “so large they are almost mind boggling.”

McKinnel, a former cop now a private detective specialising in fraud, is fuzzy on the “billions” that roll off the tongue.

He apparently lumps in the soaring internet confidence tricks and con’s into “white collar crime”.

“White collar” has connotations of rich and privileged, white-skinned people.

That doesn’t fit the Black con men of Nigeria who ruin naive, usually lonely internet users in far-off NZ, nor con-men in Pakistan who phone allegedly from Microsoft and try to get you to log on to their sucker web site.

McKinnel brings in the collapse of South Canterbury Finance when he claims white collar crime costs the country far more than tribal treaty settlements.

He seems unaware that at least one reputable financial analyst has argued that many or most of the losses at South Canterbury Finance were caused by bungling from the State-appointed receivers and managers as they unwound the knots.

McKinnel talks of how he arrived at 350,000 NZ unreported fraud and deception offences a year.

”We spoke to people who know a little about it, Matt Nippert’s an example.”

(Nippert is the NZ Herald’s “business investigations reporter”.)

McKinnel’s personal philosophy on crime and punished is reflected in:

”I think about low-hanging fruit.We’re going to get tough on people who look like criminals. We’re going to get tough on immediate baddies. But I’ve been in this game for 25 years, and I know what that generally mean is that the people who are going to be targeted have very little in their lives. We have a fantasy about how the gangs work in this country, and my friend Gilbert talks about it a lot … that there’s wealth within the gangs. There are little pockets of that, but it’s minimal.”

Presumably McKinnel was talking about Jarrod Gilbert, who is described on the web site of his employer, Canterbury University as the country’s leading authority on gangs. The site gives Gilbert’s job description as: “Director of Criminal Justice and Senior Lecturer above the Bar”. A Latin motto supplements the description: “Primum cogitare, dein bibamus”. It means something like, “First we think, then we drink.

McKinnel excepts white-collar criminals from his liberal argument against harsher penalties as a weapon against crime. They fear prison, he says.

Otherwise being tough on crime doesn’t help victims, he argues.

and to argue tit for tat. Rather, the key is to keep on returning to what the Treaty of Waitangi actually said.
Here is the first Article of the Treaty. This article frames and put boundaries around the other two articles. In
other words, any interpretation of Articles 2 and 3 of the Treaty must not, and cannot, contradict Article 1.

Part 2 is tomorrow.

A large sperm whale has apparently washed up on the Coromandel. I find this Maori bullshit nauseating:

The whale was moved [to a different beach] so the iwi could ensure correct tikanga could be better followed

One of the saddest sights of my life was the sight of 100 or so pilot whales stranded on a beach north of Gisborne in 1968 (IIRC). Half the the town – including the Garrett family – went out to see them.

I recall being moved to tears at the sight of Maori men chainsawing the jawbones off whales that were clearly still alive, while their kids amused themselves pouring sand down the whales’ blow holes.

So much for ” correct tikanga” back then. At least this particular whale appears to be already dead, so won’t suffer when its jaw is chainsawed off.

  I was walking the dog on the beach at Bland Bay about 25 years ago when we realized the sand was abnormally unstable and there was a very large chunk of dead whale under it. The dog was very keen on a sample for lunch but I was less keen on the smell. Eventually DoC and the self-important Maori elite heard about it and made the usual fuss about claiming their rights and got machinery in to dig it up and cart it off.

    A good joke, Maggie, but it illustrates how Slavic languages, like Polish, are better suited to the Cyrillic alphabet rather than trying to Westernise them with the Roman alphabet.
    
    Once you’ve learned the Cyrillic letters, progress can be fairly fast.

      All Western Slavic languages (Polish, Czech, Slovak, Sorbian, Kashubian and Silesian) use Latin alphabet and have been using it since at least XIII century in the case of Polish and Czech.
      Also some South Slavic languages such as Slovenian and Croatian use Latin alphabet.
      All due to the Roman Catholicism that is/was the predominant religion there.
      The oldest Slavic literary language was the Old Church Slavonic which was using Glagolitic alphabet.
      While all the above languages are related, they are not mutually intelligible. A fluent speaker of Polish will have absolutely no idea what a fluent speaker of Czech says. Kashubian and Silesian are even less intelligible to the people speaking other Slavic languages.

        Some of us find their shared Cyrillic alphabet facilitates transition from Russian to Ukrainian. Obvious cognates, and relationships, cement new words in memory. I hope Ukraine doesn’t switch alphabets because of the war.
        
        Polish in the Latin alphabet looks daunting. Polish nouns spoken sometimes spark a link in the mind with Russian, but Polish spelling is a hurdle.
        
        From what you say, Polish and Russian or Polish and Czech aren’t as close as, say, English and Norwegian, or English and Dutch.

Also the health system: people are dying after long ED wait times including tragically a child. But Grant says, Labour have spent 40% more on the health system.

(Could the reporter give us a breakdown on that health spend claim. So 40% more on health. But isn’t that most likely to be the $11.1billion allocated to “overhauling the health system” eg merging it. And a mother load was spent on covid . eg vax buses, advertising, quarantine, lockdowns, location and tracking apps etc. What exactly is included in that 40% more claim, And how much if any has gone to core operations? )

  So now nurses are having to do the low end jobs like make beds. Porters etc cost $23/hr. Nurses $35/hr.

As much as I wish I could find sympathy for this story, I simply can’t. Kids dealing drugs to other kids, deal goes bad, friend gets killed.

Andrew, do nothing Little blames National for how he has screwed up health

Btw Andrew, under National there were targets, people were being seen within 6 hours at ED, people were getting their operations within a timely manner. Very few strikes, you know strikes, seems you’ve had more in the past five years than I’ve seen in my life. So health was working and National had fixed the huge bloody mess Annette king had left behind, god knows how long it will take National to fix what you have done.
