Excellent political management from Chris Luxon yesterday with the Barbara Kuriger conflict of interest issue, to the point where you have to go digging in the Herald and Stuff websites to find anything. Quickly forcing Kuriger to resign from her portfolios is a refreshing contrast to the Prime Minister’s dithering around Nanaia Mahuta.

Luxon may not be a career politician, but his quick and decisive action in both the Uffindell and Kuriger cases shows that he is a quick learner.

  I’m fairly harsh on the man I know, but credit where credit’s due.
  I hope he continues dipping into the massive keg of dry fresh powder and his political shots stay tightly grouped.
  
  In fact National, rightly or wrongly, will be held to a much higher standard than this modern version of Labour could even hope to reach this election.

    And that’s the key for Luxon; he needs to pick his targets carefully. The scattergun, barking-at-every-passing-car approach didn’t work for Simon Bridges, and anyway, Luxon is happy to let his MP’s fire shots at their Labour opposities such as Nicola Willis in finance, Erica Stanford in Immigration, and Simeon Brown against Nanaia Mahuta and the PM. He doesn’t have to be involved in every story.

  Yes it was good management, but Luxon slipped up giving the portfolio to Muller. At a time when the Labour government is putting farming under siege, National need a hard nosed pragmatist to push back on Labour and to ask the real tough questions as to why we need 20% reduction in sheep & beef farming, and why NZ has to be first.

      Noted, but it’s still a poor move. Muller is gone at the next election, and is as wet as a West Coast winter. Kuriger supports farmers and the ag sector, Muller sees it as a filthy polluter and destroyer of the planet. Luxon could’ve just about given it to anyone except Muller.

        Muller is (as far as I am aware) standing at the next election.
        
        Luxon is on record as stating the National’s position is to support the consensus of He Waka Eke Noa. I appreciate that Groundswell supporters are not part of that consensus.
        
        Of course Luxon could always do a Truss and backtrack on just about every commitment he has made, but he doesn’t seem to me to be that sort of politician. In any event the polls would indicate that his positioning (being a moderate) has put National in front.

        I thought he was an insider in the world of Agri business which is not the same as the world of the ordinary farmer.

      That’s good to hear. How about National appoint an actual farmer to the role? For example Ian McKelvie (who was intending to stand down in 2023 but may not now need to), who has the knowledge and is hard working?

        Todd is an actual farmer, in the sense of being involved in Kiwifruit, both as former CE of Zespri and an owner of an orchard and pack house. Which was also a family business. Obviously he is not diary or sheep and beef, but he is very well connected to the broader agricultural sector.
        I think it is a very good move and should signal that Todd is back into a future senior cabinet role.
        Todd is very capable. Yes, his tilt at leadership didn’t work out, but the fact that he got it at all shows that he is one of National’s more accomplished people.

        Thnx, I’m sure Muller is capable but feel a diary or sheep or beef farmer may be better suited to the role with the emphasis on livestock emissions and conversions to pine forest issues (things that the likes of Kiwifruit and similar growers don’t need to face)!

    Here’s what Muller has said about the Government’s carbon tax proposals this morning:
    
    But the Government response on pricing emissions is not the right outcome.
    – Farmers should be able to count the carbon sequestration on their farm
    – Farmers should be able to work together in larger groups of collectives – such co-operative behaviour is the essence of rural NZ
    – The price proposed is too high – in fact most of the land use change is already happening in response to the high ETS price which is driving investment into forestry
    – Regulations need to change to stop saying no to trialling technology that could reduce emissions on farm
    So what to do? The Governent has to take a breath. It has to genuinely listen to the very real anger and frustration. It needs to return to the negotiating table and find a solution farmers can support.
    
    Farmers are quite capable of finding a solid solution to this issue, if only Labour and the Greens would let them!

      It needs to be mentioned and loudly that the commodities nz exports are subject to market forces, a decrease in milk products, beef and lamb, from one of the worlds biggest agricultural exporters will work in the same way a decrease in oil or gas supply affects prices. It will drive prices up globally as scarcity bites. Marginal or forested land that is subsequently cleared in developing or undeveloped countries(think rainforests) will have a greater rate of return if nz bows out of the market. So indirectly nz pushing such policies will increase the speed of global deforestation, the greens will love that dose of reality.

      What effin issue? An issue doesn’t exist. What does exist is a hokus pokus made-up excuse to rid NZ of its primary export industry and turn productive farmlands into cheap timber-producing wastelands that will probably never be harvested and definitely not produce as much money as farming.
      IMO, this is nothing more than Ardern’s revenge on those who refuse to bow down to her dictatorial edicts.
      We need CO2 to grow grass for bovines and trees. Perhaps Cindy’s not getting enough of it eh?

        Sadly, being evidentially sceptical of the man made climate crisis (net zero solution) receives similar claims of heresy to (the other excellent post today) identifying high incidence rates of family violence in certain demographics.
        Strange really as the title of ‘climate denier’ is totally absurd, as I can look outside everyday and yep it’s still there.
        
        We’re living in a regressive world when you can’t point to something and reasonably question the validity of someone else’s claims.

      Maybe reinforcing the piece in the Paris Climate Accord which says that – `no country should reduce food production in the name of climate change’.

  I wonder why it suddenly blew up. The investigation of alleged animal cruelty within her family started quite some time ago (before Chris was even identified as a possible Party leader) but she seemed to be at ‘arms length’ from it so it was not then seen as an issue. Perhaps a journo or a political enemy was about to raise it again. Perhaps Chris only just got wind of it and decided it was politically unacceptable. Anyway identifying where potential skeletons are buried and dealing with them (or at least having a plan in place) is a wise political move.

        The sender claims to be an MPI employee and alleges Kuriger has used her official letterhead to persistently request official information about her family’s case. They raise concerns about her using her influence.

        Exactly. She should have known better than to do that. Actually, I just cannot understand it. If I was a Party member in her electorate I would be advocating for her political demise in 2023. It is better if this can be sorted at grass roots level.
        This is an ongoing ‘operational’ matter as far as MPI is concerned since it involves one specific case. and MP’s (including Ministers) need to keep out of it. She should know that – especially because she is a potential Minister. This is ‘National 201’ stuff for wannabes in Candidates College.
        Now I think departments and Ministers claim too many things are operational matter. If a ‘generic’ issue is identified (eg problems with teachers payroll causing some teachers to be wrongly paid) this then becomes a matter of genuine political concern). This one however is definitely an Operational matter.

        Indeed Peterwn – I would not be surprised if between now and Christmas, Barbara Kuriger decides that the farm is calling her back. It’s a pity; at meetings I have attended where she is talking to farmers she is very well received, and speaks to them in a language they understand.
        
        If a long-term replacement is needed to lead agriculture, I suggest that Tim van de Molen, Waikato MP and NZ Young Farmer of the Year in 2013 could be in the running. He’s a very astute young man.

        Tony Stuart (WordPress would not allow a reply to your comment) – Agreed. I have heard her a few times and she came across very well. So that lapse of judgment is surprising. Perhaps she is like Jacinda – speaks well but short on other political attributes.
        Perhaps considered Tim to take over Agriculture (he is the associate spokesperson) but perhaps Chris wants him to ‘major’ in Defence and wants to give Todd more responsibilities as part of his re-integration.

    This is typical Nats. They have no principles or brains, but they are better at implementation than Labour, so all labour has to do is “reform” everything, and leave it to national it implement the bad policy properly.
    
    Remember “working for families” The day National called it an “entitlement” Labour won. Doesn’t matter who is on the Treasury benches at that point, the argument is already won.

        Even if Ms Kruger was convinced MPI was wrong, using Letterhead as an opposition spokesperson, is an epic error of judgement. Exactly the same “don’t you know who I am?” behaviour that National is trying to put behind it – and pin on Labour nepotists!
        
        As I say above. Good at managing problems and optics, but that isn’t leadership.
        
        Todd Muller is already a proven failure. He was OK middle management in a protected regulated monopoly. He folded at the first real world pressure he ever came across.
        
        Mapp as he demonstrates above is from the same squishy school of needing to be loved by his political enemies.

    Agree. Leave them alone until there is a reason to photograph them. Then arrest them, try them, incarcerate them, and jail them. 10 out of 10 crims do not break the law and harm non-prison-staff citizens, while locked up. No need to house them expensively either; put them on the Waikune Prison site (Central Plateau) and they can build their own accommodation. Or they can sleep in the snow. I care not; you really have to work very hard to kill and damage people enough to get sentenced to prison these days with the woke judiciary heeding Kelvin’s anguished calls to let his people go….

        The only historical reference to “Aotearoa” is a loose reference to it meaning the north island…..the mainland is fine.
        Nice sunny spring day, the trout are playful in the clear rivers, the trees are full of blossom, the skylarks are singing a chorus under the bellbirds on lead vocals…………..the sheep are doing sheep things, farting and feeding their farting lambs, the cows are doing cow things, shitting and pissing nitrates and the milk flows, oh how it flows…aaaahhh, Southland a happy, healthy, efficient and productive place to be.

    Shakespeare is great in parts, tedious in others (I’ve read em all), but it’s past value as a common cultural core and reference, a mark of being “well educated” is gone, just as it is for most 19th and 20th century academically lauded literature – it’s lost relevance in the context of 21st century social mores, the lessons and observations have lost relevance, and western culture is so overwhelmed with high quality works and almost universally high levels of literacy (half of population are tertiary educated) that clinging onto these old elitist Shibboleths is pointless.
    
    On the other hand modern academic study of literature and it’s delusional woke hobby-horses are all complete and utter wank too.

    Correct. I studied Shakespeare at Post Graduate level. It saddens me to see this happening in New Zealand. Shakespeare is not easy. It is not meant to be easy. Neither is mathematics, physics, chemistry and statistics. However excelling in senior high school in English and being at least competent in two of those other disciplines, will provide the foundation for critical thinking, high incomes, and participation in modern society. For good measure, add in a second language and you are set up for success.

      Parliament is the ultimate symbol of colonisation. Who would bet on it remaining in its current form for 20 years?
      
      It is likely that National will win in 2024. They will devote 6 years to stalling the decay and more efficiently administering the government. Then people will get bored. Another communist saviour will emerge and there will be a nightmare Labour /Green /Maori Party government that will destroy the lot.
      
      The ONLY way to prevent the nightmare accelerating in 2028 or at best in 2032 is for the next government to upend the whole show that we currently have on display. The first two years needs to be reform at break neck speed. I have commented repeatedly on some of the reforms required. They are not difficult to choose. Some are very simple. State funded media could be fixed in 6 months. Cogovernance could be ended for good in 6 months. Fixing education would take 5 years.

  Shakespeare’s work is chock-full of universal themes. The fact Shakespeare was not Maori does not mean he is irrelevant to Maori. On the contrary, studying a little Shakespeare enriches ALL students, be they Scottish, Maori, Somali or Chinese.
  
  Take just one play, Othello. Themes include racism (including inter-racial marriage, in the 1600s!), xenophobia, misogyny, jealousy, loneliness, ambition, treachery and justice. These are amazingly progressive topics for a play written 400 years ago.

Suspect National might not be too bothered to be ‘forced’ to step to the right, MMP you know.

Nicola Willis laid out National’s guiding economic principles and can / should be regularly held to account against them if in government. Both policy announcements and actual outcomes.

  You post a comment, may get past the mods maybe not but even you experiment by posting nothing but fawning posts for the PM and their “remarkable achievements you won’t be able to get a reply to stick on every comment.
  But!
  check out those that do…
  often the same handles will hit the stories opening hours then another wave will follow up later but the language is the same using the same hand picked legit sounding facts or hovering around Labours topic of the day.
  They even gave a heads up to the “Jami-Lee Ross mega scandal” before it busted out over the news.

  I’m not obsessed just seeing a glaringly obvious pattern to every story, on stuff, with the comments sections open.

  I noticed a massive flood of pro JA comments start around the media’s build up of the “great” Adern in all the Hag’n’Envy magazines before she became Labour mascot.
  At around the same time Labour were caught housing those young students in substandard housing and made to send them home. The task they were there for was managing social media with the reward of meeting the architect of modern Labours filthy politics, Helen Clark.
  
  I can’t imagine Labour would have completely shut down its active troll farm.

Attended a talk with David Seymour and the head of Pharmac yesterday.

A few people attending had some serious medical issues and were advocating for their causes.

A couple of take out points

1. Every dollar the government wastes could be diverted to making a real difference to peoples lives. For example the $300M wasted on the TVNZ Radio NZ merger would be life changing for some people.

2. Pharmac has a fixed budget and it has been determined that we need to have greater equality which in this context means fewer medications for some types of people.

Selfishly, I’d like that drug funded, but I understand the problem – as Seymour says “every dollar spent on woke, such as the merger (and funding the Mahuta family) is a dollar that can’t be spent on treating sick people”.   Watching Jacinda Ardern respond to the local body election results has been scary. Teeth flashing, hands waving, exhortations to “be kind”, she seems to be full-steam ahead into next year’s electoral hurricane.

    I think you will find that the fishing the NI out of the sea is a simple legend based on what is seen as you get closer to landfall, linked to fishing having been the means of survival.

It is suggested that the Kuriger expose as a (Labour) member of the Ministry of Agriculture staff has actually has upset what has been going on for some weeks if not months.
The so called paid media were spending considerable time and money on setting up a National MP ie Kuriger, about the fact that her family had an action against the Department on a matter that was settled before the courts some years ago.
The facts are not in dispute and have been public knowledge for a long time.
Luxon was right to clip it in the bud now despite the media complaining that they know that his office was advised some days ago.
The Labour paid media are getting desperate as the opinion polls are not doing what the media are paid to do.

  Of course this standard does not apply to Labour MP’s.
  
  Readers will recall when in Opposition, Carmel Sepuloni used her position as Labour’s Social Welfare spokeswoman to question MSD about its prosecution policies of beneficaries at the very time her own Mother was being charged and subsequently convicted of benefit fraud.
  
  No stand-down of Sepuloni by Labour for the questionable abuse of her position as an MP; in fact Labour appointed her the Minister of MSD at the first opportunity.

Read Stephen Franks’ comments re the Supreme Court’s incorporation of Maori customs into NZ common law – the SC dismissed common law as a “colonial relic” – its a masterful annihilation of a woke SC majority of two women and (surprise) a Maori. The two male Supremes (both notable lawyers) disagreed.

    There’s no point in running an effective protest if you’re not prepared to stick your neck out.
    Those dozen or so people who blocked/disrupted traffic for a short time around Auckland & Wellington were more effective than the Falun Gong people who stood outside the Chinese Consulate in their scores for years on Great South Rd.
    A guy stood on the footpath at the top end of Lambton Quay each lunchtime for decades flourishing a bible and rabbiting on about Jesus. I never saw anyone pay a blind bit of notice to what he was saying. Bishop Brian never made the mistake of being anonymous even if it means hitching his wagon to any populist outrage he can exploit.

After witnessing the fiasco in Britain overnight, and the general shambles that is the UK, if anybody now still clings to the preposterous notion that London is a great power, then you need to seriously smell the coffee and think again. It isn’t and it hasn’t been for a very long time. So why would you look to it for any kind of leadership on frankly anything?

There are troubling implications in this for New Zealand, not least of which is the foolishness of so many New Zealanders in allowing themselves to be influenced by the UK’s brand of neo-socialism and woke while living in the UK and then bringing that nonsense back home with them.

It is more of a feature of the Labour Party than National, but it is dangerous and poses a real threat to the future economic and social prosperity of our country just as it is doing in the UK.

These forces, which have already wrecked much of the legacy of the UK, will do the same here if New Zealanders let it. And so far, I seen bugger all effort out here by people on the right to stop it or at least fight back against it. The Right (The Conservatives) in the UK is a mess. It is a confused, bumbling, discordant shambles with little coherent sense of core conservative values, traditions, and how to respond to the barbarians who are pilling over the gate.

Is National in New Zealand any better? Look at the confused, bumbling, discordant shambles that many of National’s MPs have been in to date. Does even one of them have a sense of what it means to be a New Zealander and what it is about New Zealand that needs to be defended?

Most would expect immunity and inability to transmit, as with existing vaccines. Is the Newshub heading minimising the type of weapon the offender was using.
The term ‘BB gun’ suggests a rather low powered air rifle, but was this the case.
There is data that suggests one person dies each year in the UK from an air powered weapon injury in the UK, with an average of four in the US.

    He was shot by a high powered airgun. These require a license and are different from BB guns which don’t and are low powered.

  A “BB gun” fires a small sphere of copper plated steel. Steel is light compared to lead so lacks impact power. They are for 8yr old playing.
  
  But I wouldnt trust the reporter to know which is which.
  
  A high powered air rifle like the cop got shot with can easily go thru a corrugated fence and you can use teflon coated steel tipped lead slugs. Very dangerous ammo. I use mine for killing pukekoes. The better brands are comparable to a .22 lr in power.

At least with the big announcement from James Shaw about NZ cutting farm emissions to save the world, people now have something clear to think about and consider the merits of.
Whether you disapprove of farming, primary production and the people who “destroy and pollute the land” these are the choices-
Do we want the best, fertile land in NZ to be used to produce food and environmentally friendly fibre/leather for domestic and export markets?
Or do we want the best fertile land in NZ covered with flimsy houses and mono cultural pine trees?
Even the most unaware people must be able to understand this, surely?

Things are going to get rough with the propaganda aimed at whitie. Things are starting to look like South Afrika pre 1994.
Maori are going to be rewarded for poor business decisions and laziness by not paying emissions fees, but hard working, prudent, clever non-Maori are going to be pinged for their efforts. They will be paying emissions fees.
There is no mention of Maori farmers who are have good land and are doing well, just like their non-Maori counterparts. What about them? The document just makes no provision for them. This document is about ‘all Maori.’
How is this fair?
It’s not.
It’s apartheid.
