Plenty of people, me included, have happily anticipated Elon Musk restoring free speech to Twitter. The extent of the little bird’s censorship has become alarming, including Senator’s tweets depicting government data, and over the weekend a tweet from Florida’s surgeon general. No matter how credentialed, anyone documenting evidence giving rise to concern about Covid ‘vaccines’ is likely to have posts censored, or their account suspended. Twitter heaven is quite full right now.

But it appears Musk will be toothless. Why? Have a read of this: How the EU is Forcing Twitter to Censor (and Musk Can’t Stop It). The alarming thing for me in the article was the realisation that EU compliance legislation with the threat of enormous fines leading to worldwide content censorship.

Unbeknownst to most Americans, this has in fact occurred and their 1st Amendment rights are being vitiated, namely, by the European Union. There is a financial gun pointed at Twitter. But it is not the Biden administration, but rather the European Commission, under the leadership of Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, that has its finger on the trigger.

The law in question is the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which was passed by the European Parliament last July 5 amidst almost total indifference – in Europe as much as in the United States – despite its momentous and disastrous implications for freedom of speech worldwide.

The DSA gives the European Commission the power to impose fines of up to 6% of global turnover on “very large online platforms or very large online search engines” that it finds to be non-compliant with its censorship requirements. “Very large” is defined as any platform or search engine that has over 45 million users in the EU. Note that while the size criterion is limited to users in the EU, the sanction is based precisely on the company’s global turnover.

Curiously, the publication of the draft legislation coincided with the authorization and subsequent rollout of the first Covid-19 vaccines in the EU: the legislation was unveiled on December 15 and the first Covid-19 vaccine, that of BioNTech and Pfizer, was authorized by the Commission just six days later. Vaccine skeptics or critics would quickly become the principal target of EU-driven online censorship thereafter.

As for Musk being defanged, watch the vid and the end of the article. It looks like a hostage video with the little EU chap having moments earlier read Musk the ‘Fines’ section of the EU’s censorship legislation. Musk looks as awkward as I’ve ever seen him.

      Odd, you didn’t mention “hyperLoop”, a ridiculous concept that already has burned through hundreds of millions of dollars with nothing but idiotic demos like a small tunnel in Las Vegas. Never mind the physics.
      I am a big fan of innovation, it’s actually what I do for a living, but Elon Musk is hoovering vast sums of money that could go into real breakthroughs rather than silly brain farts Elon comes up with.

        The money Musk is “hoovering” up are subsidies offered by idiotic federal and state government officials and politicians to various businesses and industries he would be an idiot not to take. Musk is on record stating he’s against subsidies in principle, but any good businessman doesn’t leave free money on the table.
        
        As for Hyperloop, I left that out because its long-term success or failure has yet to be determined. It might never be viable but then “experts” were just as obnoxiously snarky as your post about reusable rockets and mass-produced EVs 20 years ago too. Maybe get back to us in 2040 about a “silly brain fart” like the Hyperloop.
        
        And unless you’re a multi-billionaire yourself, don’t kid yourself you’re in the same league as Musk. If you bother to watch or listen to any in-depth long-format interview with him, he readily admits gaps in his knowledge, mistakes and missteps he’s made over the last few decades. Maybe you could try a little less hubris and a little more humility yourself?

  Elon should compare notes with Gina Rinehart (mining magnate and Australia’s richest woman) who purchased a share in Fairfax (I think it still completely owned DomPost then) and wanted a seat on the Board, possibly to influence editorial policy (someone quipped that the SMH, Age, etc would become the ‘Mining Gazette’ if she was on the Board). There was almighty resistance to her getting a Board seat and it did not happen. She later sold out.

  I am not signed up with Twitter, but I do enjoy reading some posts from links on here.
  One of the reasons for censoring posts is those posting can get their view out there before the Media fucks with it. The example that sticks out like dog’s balls is Donald Trump!
  Now we know what sort of shit Jaspinda was spouting at the United Nations. The same as Twitter. We must have ‘free speech’ as long as it is the free speech that she and her commie cohorts can censor invisibly. What a nasty piece of work.
  Just remember Ardern, we have a ‘Bill of Rights’ Do not get out of your depth any more than you already are.

While “3 Waters” legislation already progresses through Parliament, leading to the establishment of “co-governance”, the nation-wide “conversation” on “co-governance” has not really occurred as Ardern promised, but these results, above, should tell her one side of the “conversation” we are yet to have.

    I was so pleased to see that. I’ve admired Tulsi’s stance on many issues for a number of years now. She certainly seems principled.
    Her words re the state of the Democratic Party were scathing but totally accurate.
    America is fracturing and it needs to. It needs a good reset, totally unrelated to the one advocated by Herr Schwab and co.

    I saw this in my emails. Tulsi Gabbard has not been happy with the Democrat’s direction for some time. Dems have been making things difficult (censoring) for her.
    I wonder if she will approach the Republicans, or the Republicans approach her to replace the RINOs as they lose the mid-terms?
    Independent will probably take her nowhere.
    Leaving the Democrats means one thing: she can now let them have it with both barrels

      It seems Tulsi is waking up. In 2015 she was named as one of the World Economic Forum’s “Young Global Leaders”, joining the ranks of young liberals including Emmanuel Macron, Jacinda Ardern and Justin Trudeau, all of whom graduated from Klaus Schwab’s class to become modern-day left-wing authoritarians.
      
      But Tulsi Gabbard chose a different path.
      
      Rather than falling in line as a standard-issue Democrat coward, Gabbard has not had any qualms criticizing party royalty in recent years. In 2020 she sued Hillary Clinton after the notoriously duplicitous former First Lady slandered her a “Russian asset.”
      
      More recently she has said what we have all been thinking and leveled criticism at Joe Biden for his dystopian decision to create a Disinformation Governance Board, while pointing out the direct connection between it and recent comments made by former President Barack Obama.
      
      So yeah, when Hillary Clinton calls someone “a Russian asset” forgive me if I summarily dismiss the accusation.

        I read Robert Friedman’s book “Red Mafiya” back in about 2005ish. The book was written in 2000. It lays out Trump’s mob connections, and how they were transferred across to the Russian mob. You should read more.
        
        You might also find https://twitter.com/CaslerNoel interesting. Noel Casler was the Trump family handler in “The Apprentice”. He’s seen Trump and the kids a lot closer than you and I have. He’s very clear that Trump is incontinent (due to years of drug use), wears Depends, and that “clean up” was one of Keith Schiller and Hope Howell’s jobs (so maybe there’s a vacancy … you could apply). Oh, and Trump’s Russian mob connections too (Yes, I know you don’t want to believe). I note that Trump hasn’t ever sued Noel Casler. Given the sorts of things Noel is saying, if I were Trump and they were untrue then I’d have sued him long ago.
        
        And I’m not a Democrat, so they’re not “my camp”. If I were in the US I’m sure I’d have registered as Independent.
        
        But if we want to tote up Russian influenced US politicians I’d say Trump (natch), Rand Paul, Gabbard and Yang. I don’t think Sinema leans Russian, she just leans Sinema.

    Zero chance of CNN losing this one. This issue is fully covered by the First Amendment and the relevant Supreme Court decisions.
    There is no way the Supreme Court, even as presently constituted, would allow a success on something like this. Trump’s suit goes way too close to gutting the First Amendment and completely stifling debate on a key political issue.

  Trump’s suit of CNN is performance art, and will go nowhere. It’s only purpose is to give the Trumpkins a buzz … which clearly it’s done with Steve Otto.
  
  Legally it has little or no chance. CNN has all the legal high ground here.
  
  Politically it will also go nowhere, because discovery would be lit. For example, can you imagine CNN’s teams of lawyers deposing Trump under oath about whether he lies?
  
  Trump has years of history of filing lawsuits to get a headline, and then dropping them once the initial publicity has gone through.
  
  I’m amazed he hasn’t been classified as a vexatious litigant by now (where, based on his history of pointless suits he would need a judge’s permission before filing any further new suits).

    Go read what Trump is suing CNN over, and then ask yourself what questions might Trump face from CNN’s lawyers under oath in a deposition. Then come back and tell me if you think this lawsuit will go anywhere.
    
    As far as I know Trump has only been deposed under oath one time. By Timothy O’Brien in 2007, after Trump sued O’Brien for libel. It did not go well for Donald. https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2017-06-12/trump-s-history-of-lies-according-to-biographer-timothy-o-brien I doubt Trump will want to go through a similar experience with CNN.

        I’ll stand by my take that this lawsuit will go nowhere.
        
        It’s a civil case, so the burden of proof is on Trump. CNN has a number of legal defences open to it. Trump will not want to be deposed. And CNN will be able to out-spend him.
        
        Pragmatically, there may be a “settlement” because that’s the nature of dropping a civil case. But I’ll be surprised if that settlement includes any financial payment from CNN to Trump, or if there’s any apology let alone admission.

        Yours was a thoughtful comment, so let me give a longer thoughtful reply.
        
        I see “Trump sues CNN” within a broader context of Fox News et al being sued by Dominion and Smartmatic. I totally expect Hannity, Tucker, Judge Judy, Mike Lindell etc (who have all already been deposed in those suits) are calling Trump saying things along the lines of “This is so unfair. The other side (CNN) lies, and someone needs to call them to account”. So you end up with Trump suing CNN as lawfare.
        
        Let’s set aside for a moment whether Fox or CNN has lied or not, or who lied the most, or … forgetaboutit.
        
        The difficulty is that Trump is a politician, a public person, whereas Dominion and Smartmatic are private companies. The law gives the media far more leeway in its statements, comments and opinions about public politicians than it gives the media about its statements, comments and opinions about private companies and private individuals.
        
        So CNN has far stronger legal defences against Trump than Fox/OAN/Lindell have against Dominion/Smartmatic. To the extent that I don’t expect Trump can or will prevail here. I think AllOnRed has commented on this in previous days too. For sure, if Trump wants to truly fight this he’s going to take some big hits to himself and to his wallet.
        
        I do expect though that Dominion & Smartmatic do have a strong case that will be tough to escape from, because the law holds you much tighter when talking about non-public entities.
        
        I don’t know where the CNN suit is at. I expect CNN will move to have it dismissed. May well succeed. If they don’t then it will move to discovery. Which will be lit.

        Win, lose or draw in the courts, Trump will win in the court of public opinion because it is mid-term election season and Trump’s lawyers will perform better on the world stage than CNN’s.

        Trump’s lawyers are bottom-of-the-barrel types. There’s years of history of Trump (a) not taking his lawyers’ best legal advice and (b) not paying his legal bills. And he’s now toxic to the big firms because working for him would torpedo their relationships with too many other clients, sour the relationship with their staff, and stop their recruitment. Added to which Trump’s lawyers keep needing to get their own lawyers.
        
        So he can’t get high quality representation any more. Which is how Trump finds himself with lawyers like Alina Habba, who was a New Jersey parking garage lawyer.
        
        Methinks you spend too much time listening to Trump’s lawyers speak on Fox News. Court is not like Fox News. In court you have to speak the truth, and you have to have a logically and factually accurate argument. So a regulator alleges an organisation of “serious wrongdoing” in spending charitable donations on political campaigns, and all they get is a warning?

A Charities Services investigation into hundreds of thousands of charitable dollars donated for John Tamihere’s political campaigning resulted in an allegation of “serious wrongdoing” and the issuing of a formal warning notice to Waipareira.

Tamihere is chief executive of major west Auckland education and social services charity Te Whānau o Waipareira.

He was also an unsuccessful candidate in 2019 for the Auckland mayoralty, and was co-leader and candidate for the Māori Party during the 2020 general election. This year he became that party’s president.

He said the warning notice was being contested.

Last month the Herald reported that Waipareira, and the National Urban Māori Authority of which Tamihere is also chief executive, had “endorsed” his tilts for public office and advanced $468,002 in “sponsorship payments” or no-interest loans.

A Charities Services investigation sparked by a donation from Waipareira to Tamihere’s 2019 mayoral campaign resulted in the issuing of a formal warning notice in late 2020 after Charities Services determined the payment amounted to serious wrongdoing.

  We have all got used to Maori for years holding out their hands for redress and money for treaty and deprivation issues.

  Where do they go from here and is the constant talk from Government about co governance and treaty redress encouraging more belligerence.

  There is a major back story to the problems in Auckland. It all started with a train falling of a broken rail on the approach to Britomart Station in 2018. Shows what happens when you run vehicles over the same track multiple times and do no maintenance.
  
  The issue is unless track is shut for significant periods of time significant track replacement and reballasting of the track is not going to occur.
  
  Unfortunately, KiwiRail were not organised to do that work plus the work on the NIML to Whangarei at the same time during the lockdowns. Perhaps Jaspinda needs to co-ordinate her thinking with govt agencies next time. sarc//

  Energy cannot be created for free. It cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transformed. It’s the first law of thermodynamics and the climate “science” zealots conveniently like to ignore this actual science.
  Electricity has to be created somehow. There is a cost in that creation, physical and environmental. It is a fact the green ideologues like to conveniently ignore.
  Just to highlight something here, I walk the walk and talk the talk more than 99.9% of these morons protesting. I live fully off grid, including my power and water. I have no connection to the main infrastructure. I still have my 60″ TV and my beer fridge thank you. I am not talking from a political corner, I’m talking reality.
  
  Somebody had to mine the materials to make the things to create the electricity that keep my beer cold and my TV running. I have to cut trees to burn the wood to keep me warm and to heat food in the winter. My solar hot water still never ceases to astonish me, but it was made in China from numerous materials, the origin of which I have no idea. Undoubtedly mined by someone somewhere, I didn’t check to see how “green” this process was.

  As with covid, we need open debate and discussion. As with covid, if that debate is permitted it can easily be shown that their argument is extremely flawed, that platitudes and sound bites about “net zero by 2050” are political marketing slogans not based on any reality on planet earth.
  
  Net zero without catastrophic harm to most people on earth is not remotely possible. Probably requiring a population decline of 5 or 6 billion.
  These poor, deluded ideologues who support the net zero lunacy haven’t thought past the end of the year let alone considered the future awaiting their children and grandchildren.
  
  Apologies for what became a bit of a rant. But it stuns me that seemingly educated people can be so stupid. It was the same with covid. It can only be due to a rotten education system which has become more about indoctrinating ideology than actually educating. It has put the planet, and the west in particular in a very precarious position.
  I’m into my 60s, it isn’t likely to have to devastating an impact on me, but our children and grandchildren deserve better.

About Labour’s consultation document on farming emissions.

Can we please have the MSM question the Govt on the future price increases for consumers, that will result?

Eg $10 for a bottle of milk? $30-40 for a 1kg block of cheese? Gasp … $20 for a latte at the cafe? $100 for 1kg of decent steak? $20 for a BigMac?

Because if farming costs go up, so will the prices for consumers. That’s what happens (it’s not complicated)!

Which means the poor, low income (and the middle income) will be poorer as a result, both financially and in terms of diet.

But wait there’s more, because of these price increases the Govt will of course see an increasing tax take …. added bonus for Grant Robertson (assuming Labour win the next election! No wonder he is rubbing his hands with glee, surely)!

So can we have some investigation please (and questions to the PM) about the increased cost of living that will result, making dairy products mostly affordably otherwise a luxury for Kiwi’s?

And what about the by-products of farming, affecting the likes of pharmaceuticals and their R&D?

Remember food production is not meant to be impacted by International Climate Change policy, so why is James Shaw and Jacinda Ardern killing of the Primary sector and making the cost of living unbearable for all NZ’ers?

Otherwise honestly who cares about being “world leading” and shooting Kiwi’s in their feet?

This madness needs to be scrapped … confirmed after listening to James Shaw’s trainwreck of an interview with Mike Hosking this morning – it’s utter ideological madness, with absolutely no consideration of the impacts on people (that are not as well off as the high earning urban liberal elite political class that can afford to virtue signal and bask in the glow of being “world leading”)!

Oddly, not a lot of comment is made about it (/s), but there is a wee graph in the doc that shows the methane we emit apparently warms the globe by something less than 0.0001’C.
  My memory is a bit hazy about the exact number, but it’s in that order.

    I would be interested to hear from O’Connor about the progress on the Genetically modified Ryegrass. developed in NZ but not available to NZ farmers.
    This ryegrass provided reduced methane from the cows, but was not allowed to be trialled on NZ farms as it was genetically modified during development at Massey College Grasslands Research and Ruakura Research. The grass is being used in USA to the benefit of USA farmers.
    Perhaps Oconnor can indicate when this ryegrass type will be available to NZ farmers.

Labours new tax on farmers.
1. Labour wants to set up a new tax mechanism on farmers. The rate of tax will be set by cabinet as they see fit. No need to change a law or consult parliament. You can just imagine the Green Party demands after the next election. It is a trap!
2. Methane is a relatively short-lived gas. It stays in the atmosphere for about 10 years. The New Zealand dairy herd peaked in 2014 and has been declining since then. That means methane emissions are not only reducing, but the absolute total amount of methane in the atmosphere is reducing. Methane molecules can have no effect on the weather if they simply do not exist.
3. Labour loves to be “world leading”. I shudder every time I see the headline. All it means it that no other country has been so stupid as to implement this policy.

How can you tax something that doesn’t exist?
It’s up to the local council to charge a farmer who’s polluting.
If the local council has just cause to believe a particular farmer is polluting the atmosphere, they’d require proof of diminished atmosphere quality from a certain date before a charge of atmosphere pollution can be brought before the Court.
So all local councils will need to employ experts to test the atmosphere above each farm (probably from drones) on at least a weekly basis.

Helpful advise for the PM (honest)!

Instead of visiting primary schools, could the PM go and visit secondary schools and meet with the economics teachers (bring the Finance Minister along too please)?

Then ask the economics teachers to explain how the Govt increasing regulatory and compliance costs results in increased costs for consumers (and goods to consumers), resulting in increased wage demands that need to be passed back on to consumers, which leads to higher inflation, which results in further increasing wage demands which results in further costs to consumers which need to be passed on (after all no-one is going to work for “free”)!

As it is a closed circular type arrangement, some simple drawing using circles and arrows should do (no big words)!

Then when the PM and Finance Minister “get it”, ask them for some real life examples. There are plenty of examples to choose from, eg:

*Increasing compliance costs for landlords = increasing rent costs for people!

*Increasing compliance costs for farming = increasing food and drink costs for people!

*Increasing green energy compliance costs = increasing energy bills for people!

*Increasing costs passed onto businesses = increasing costs passed back to people!

Then once the PM and Finance Minister “get it”, ask them to go away and do some homework on how to go about decreasing compliance and regulatory costs and present their findings at their next secondary school visit (which no doubt will be the following week)!

  I think there’s an interesting choice of styles for your Minister of Foreign Affairs. You either want:
  – someone who clearly and honestly lives your national values with integrity, or

Why has the Ruapehu skifield gone bust while skifields in the South Island thrive?

Is it that it’s easier for Aussies to get to the Otago and Canterbury skifields than it is to reach those in the middle of the North Island?

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts owes the Government (through MBIE) $15 million – and failed to get another loan from it; the ANZ Bank $6 million; and the Ruapehu District Council $500,000.

The company has a large number of shareholders for its size, with the shares in small parcels.

Sounds like a magnified version of one of the old ski clubs.

  I know the south island ski fields have their mountains earning money in the summer for mountain bikers etc. Not sure if Ruapehu have diversified also with a summer outdoors season. Hence earning money only 4-6 months a year and if you have a bad winter like this year then zero dollars earnt.

Stormy times …

The British pound is down again after the Bank of England announced it would end emergency support for pension funds on Friday.

The British financial markets will be worth watching when they open tonight (NZ time).

The Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association, which represents the pension industry, urged the central bank overnight (NZ time) to extend its bond purchases until the end of the month.

The Wall Street Journal reports the Bank of England’s governor. Andrew Bailey said the bond-buying programme would end on Friday as planned.

“You’ve got three days left,” he said in remarks addressed to pension funds on Tuesday. “You’ve got to get this done.”

The funds have a “window of opportunity” in which to sell assets to cover “very big margin calls,” he said.

Have NZ’s Nats been watching the turmoil that Twiss has caused?

    Labour will try to sell Luxon tax reforms as favouring the rich (who already vote National any way), and pro-inflation.
    
    An intelligent party of the Right would shut the fuck up about tax cuts, concentrate on the inflation fight, then, having won power and with inflation coming down, reform tax brackets and stem the creep upwards in taxation.

        I assume you don’t agree with Milton Friedman that inflation is always a monetary phenomenon.
        
        On the other hand I agree with Friedman. And here’s economist Adrian Blundell-Wignall in the Australian Financial Review (unfortunately behind its pay wall) a couple of months ago:
        
        Global money has been a reasonable lead indicator of inflation since the financial crisis.
        
        Central banks that all failed to forecast the outbreak of inflation certainly weren’t looking at the money supply.
        
        Most recently a new inflection point has emerged in the downward direction. The monetary variable has dropped sharply, stretching the “elastic band” with inflation to breaking point.
        
        Something is going to happen as a consequence, and it may be unpleasant.
        
        Regardless, we’re about to find out who was right: the Keynesians and recent central bankers; or Friedman.

The PM’s tour through the new Costco was on the front page of the paper a couple of months back. How does this tally with their Climate tax on farmers.

The Herald reported “It comes as the Government on Wednesday confirmed a wholesale plan to try and drive food prices down.

(Minister) Clark says the introduction of a new player into the market will be good competition for the supermarket duopoly.”

Right ok. Yet the climate tax will drive food prices up. And the government clearly supported Costco’s low prices. But will Costco pay environmental taxes on their transport emissions and their plastic wrapping. Will imported products be subject to the same “values” taxes we pay here. Who is the biggest polluter, your local farmer or costco? Who contributes more to inequality your local farmer or costco? Is costco a member of WEF, is your local farmer? Who contributes more to the NZ we know and love, our rural landscapes, our schools, rural fire services, and support of them, Costco or your local farmer?

eg, the Maori myth of rain is…
“The Moon grabbed Rona and her water bucket. Many people today see a woman with a bucket in the Moon. It is said that when Rona upsets her bucket, it rains.”

So in a science exam it is now a correct answer to say rain comes ‘from the moon’.

She went to the queens funeral to ask since Andrew doesn’t need his title any more if she could have it…. Did Elon Musk have a phone chat with Vladimir Putin in which there was a nuclear-attack warning?

The US technology billionaire has denied that he spoke with the Russian president before publishing a “peace plan” on Twitter that heavily favoured Russian demands.

Reports that Musk and Putin had spoken emerged through Ian Bremmer, an American political science academic who is president of Eurasia Group, a New York-based political risk research and consulting firm. The Telegraph says the firm is widely respected and advises governments about global risks.

Putin is said to have told Musk that he was “prepared to negotiate” with Ukraine if the Crimean peninsula – annexed by Moscow in 2014 – remains in Russian hands and Ukraine “accepts a formal status of neutrality”.

The alternative was major escalation. Further, if Zelensky invaded Crimea, Russia would retaliate with a nuclear strike on Ukraine.

Just scrolled down the NZH website and a bit further down in the Business section they have an article titled:

Farm emissions scheme: Expect higher food prices for consumers – economists

So hidden down from the main news section, the Team of $55M bring readers criticism of their beloved Labour Govt! Oh and it’s Premium too, so most people won’t be able to read it!

Anyway in the article both Westpac and ANZ sound the following warnings:

Westpac: “Westpac senior agri-economist Nathan Penny said imposing charges on agriculture emissions – particularly for sheep and beef farmers – would end up costing consumers. This will mean higher food prices,” Penny said. “There is no free lunch for this policy – it will mean higher meat and dairy prices. “Invariably, those costs will end up with household consumers,” he said.”.

ANZ: “ANZ’s agri-economist Susan Kilsby said the proposals, when enacted, would affect how much food is produced locally. “It’s definitely going to impact how much food we produced in New Zealand,” she said.

Of course we shouldn’t forget something even more sinister, Labour/Greens are wanting a 20% reduction in stock herd numbers. In other words Ardern, Robertson, Shaw and Co want to see the rural farming industry decimated (probably by 20%), which will impact on communities, schools, the service industry, mental health …. and $billions of export earnings.

There will be a reaction.

I would not be surprised if the next major political poll has Labour polling in the 20’s …..

Not sure why people are piling upon National but Chris Luxon was interviewed on ZB’s The Country at lunchtime.

With regards to Labour’s farming announcement yesterday, Luxon states it is “unacceptable” and “untenable” and he has low faith for Labour to engage constructively with the farming community, in fact he basically says they don’t engage.

Audio of the interview (first item) via the audio player at the bottom of the page (looks like NZME can’t even be bothered writing a news release as a follow up! Ka-ching $55m?)!
