Richard Prebble gives Ardern a pretty good bollocking in his latest piece on Basset Brash and Hide. This part specifically hasn’t been reported on much, but bloody well should have been.

There were two big state funerals last month: The funeral of the longest serving monarch of Great Britain and the funeral of the longest serving Prime Minister of Japan.
Wikipedia lists the dignitaries who attended. New Zealand had twelve dignitaries at the Queen’s funeral. Wikipedia lists no dignitary from New Zealand at Shinzo Abe’s funeral. Actually we sent Megan Woods, the mister of energy, but no one noticed.
The Australians sent their Prime Minister and three former Australian Prime Ministers. Twenty heads of state, seven Vice-Presidents including Vice-President Kamala Harris plus fourteen foreign ministers, including the UK’s, were there. The Prime Ministers of India, South Korea and Singapore were among the dignitaries from 117 countries.
The UK is our seventh trading partner. Japan is our fourth.When a minister I was astonished by the importance officials gave to invitations. Every decline is analyzed.
The Japanese will be wondering such low level representation? Is it racism? Is New Zealand offended at being excluded from the Quad, the security arrangement between the USA, Japan, India and Australia? Neither is the reason.
All the New Zealand televisions channels sent camera crews to cover the Queen’s state funeral. No channel sent a camera crew to Japan. No camera is why Jacinda did not go.

  Apart from anything else when it comes to trade Japan is far more important to Australia than it is to us.
  Ironically the same people who grizzle that the PM didn’t attend the funeral of the previous PM of Japan would be accusing her of being AWOL if she had gone.
  NZ had a substantial representation at QEII’s funeral because she was our Head of State.

  By the way this man is a hero. The easy thing to do is to let the criminal scum that infest Auckland CBD onto the bus without paying and saying nothing.
  
  These people are vicious scum but the bus driver acted with integrity and honesty at personal risk asked scum to pay. The bus driver was attacked as a result.
  
  The bus driver should be promoted and the feckless fools in government who allow something like Auckland CBD should become bus drivers.

    Special people are of course going to be inflamed when an immigrant/tauiwi asks them to pay for a bus ride, or dares to ask them to stop swearing.
    The only way to restore mana is to bash that bus driver good! //
    Indian migrants are successful and hardworking. They are so low on the victimhood totem pole, they are almost ‘white adjacent’!
    
    Not sure why they don’t show the CCTV footage or image of the offender so that someone can dob him in.
    A coward’s punch like that can have life altering consequences – and NZ society/justice and police need to be serious about there being some consequences for the feral scum amongst us.

    First Union’s assistant general secretary Louisa Jones confirmed today the union had launched a petition to call for better protections for bus drivers following the incident with Sahni.
    
    What a bad fucking joke the above is! What Ms Jones ought to be doing is telling her mates in the Labour Party to pass some legislation increasing the penalties for assault on bus and cab drivers, or better still, giving immunity from prosecution for any driver who hits back…and for anyone who comes to his or her aid.
    
    A few battered and bruised would-be passengers left at the bus stop would send a message to the vermin PDQ.
    
    I feel for this guy; when I was a student I drove cabs – at night. Cab drivers are even more vulnerable to cowardly attacks since they have no colleagues to come to their aid – and there is often more than one passenger.
    
    I got through my cab driving days without serious incident, but the cops were called a few times. Fortunately, back in the day, they responded quickly. I remember one would-be assailant being slammed against the cab and handcuffed when the cop found he had outstanding warrants. Today that cop would probably find himself before the IPCA.

  No Simon, Orr isn’t NZ’s biggest fuck up, that is the sole territory (by an awful long way) of Ardern. Orr’s problem is that he shills for Robertson. Essentially does his bidding, not matter what the cost. It makes me laugh when you hear the RBNZ (and Labour Ministers) talk about the struggle to combat inflation. Yes, it is a struggle, but its a direct result of Labour’s policies and the RBNZ’s actions in support of those policies!

    Simply Orr as Governor of the Reserve Bank is no longer an Independent Governor as in the past, but a political tool of the Government and the new politically appointed Management Committee and Board.
    Look at he names and from whence they come.

I got the impression that the Government has just generated a $9 billion surplus and Grant is very happy about it and talking himself up as a brilliant economic manager. I have done a quick perusal of other media and can’t find the story.

  Is there a disconnect between Grant Robertson’s gleeful self-back patting about how much income the Govt is receiving from the tax-take (from hard working and struggling taxpayers), allowing Labour to spend, spend, spend like crazy ….. with the Reserve Bank having to continuously raise the Official Cash Rate to curb inflation?
  
  The problem surely is, it is people (particularly low and middle income, superannuates, the unemployed etc) bearing the brunt of ever increasing home loan rates and increased cost of living as food and goods (and wage costs for businesses) keep going up.
  
  If this is the case, how come the MSM can’t seem to make the “connection” and roast Labour (Robertson and Ardern) for their actions which is impacting on the public?
  
  Instead we seem to have a reverse “Robin Hood” scenario where the MSM appear to be praising Labour and Robertson for their economic management by robbing the poor to pay for Labour’s “rich-mates” (and wasteful) pet spending schemes!

  They generated a $9B deficit. The reason they’re all happy-clappy about it is because it was initially expected to be a $19B deficit.
  
  Only reason it isn’t is because the tax take was $10B higher than forecast.
  
  So we’re all $10B lighter in the pocket, and the country is still in the red.

    You know you have a massive deficit coming so you blow it up to ginormous levels. Everyone expects $19b and you come in at $9b, everyone is happy because it is less then you primed them for. Without the $19b story, this $9b deficit would be a disaster (especially as the tax take has been so much higher). Spending is out of control.

      Exactly. Councils do this every year. Predict a 9.5% rates rise, then with “laser focus” councillors peg it back to a 7% rise. Oh joy! This current situation is unbelievable. We have a $9 billion deficit, yet the government and MSM think it is a wonderful success. Crazy.

    Surely returning tax that exceeded requirements is not fittering it away.
    In which case there is $10.5 billion to be returned.

    To be fair to the Treasury, they are intentionally forecasting a very conservative, almost worst-case, scenario.
    
    The real concern should be if/when we have actual results that are *worse* than the Treasury’s forecast.

        Well, they’re preparing these forecasts for Budgets. So the prudent thing is to under-estimate your revenue, over-estimate your expenditure, and include provisioning for bad unknowns.
        
        That way any surprises should be to the upside (as they are here).
        
        I could imagine that forecasts prepared in 2021 would have been quite pessimistic, and that the scale of the upside surprise could be quite high.
        
        But a $9b deficit still isn’t anything to be happy about.

      Firstly it was more a directive from the Gormless Finance Minister- he actully admited he in effect has cost the tax payer $9 Billion dollars – what a plonker.
      
      Secondly the $9 Billion will not be incurred all at once- cost is roughly $150 to $200 million a month for five bloody years depending on maturities and sales- fucking scandal that the MSM has swept under the carpet.

  What he didn’t mention, was that six of the lowest ten Debt-to-GDP countries in the world are oil producers.

Is it any wonder why Schools have lost students after the way this Government has treated people over Covid-19, truancy is a major factor in the numbers, and that hasn’t helped by the way Labour has treated families over Covid-19.
This will be a disaster for teachers that lose there jobs and like most things this Government control will have a bearing for many years to come.

  I don’t know what the exact number or ratio is, but I think we could comfortably lose a decent chunk of teachers and improve the outcomes for children.

So, for the past few weeks we have had the spectre of Labour shouting down the prospect of Tax Relief because of the state of the government books….

Which are now 10 billion better than was forecast….

and National’s Tax Relief pack is costed at 3 Billion….

Grant may be crowing his economic management (by accident) but the figures presented yesterday do support National’s assertion that Tax Relief in the face of a cost of living crisis is not only viable, but necessary for the well being of hard working Kiwis.

  There will always be unusual cold snaps.
  
  However the data shows that Christchurch winters are milder than even ten years ago. When I visited Christchurch in 2014 on business, I got out of the taxi and fell flat on my back after slipping on the heavy frost on the footpath. Minimums of minus 4 degrees were recorded a few times each winter. Now that number is rare.

      It does but just not as much as it used to. Both the data and perception tells that story.
      
      In 2022, the mean temperature in winter was 1.1 degrees above the historical average. But critically, it was the winter with the second highest rainfall going back to when records began. What don’t you get when you get regular rain? Frosts and below zero night temperatures.

        Yeah, clear nights beget frost. I would say that the report (interesting reading by the way) does say that there were a few major drivers for more rainfall and therefore a record warm winter that are not climate related: a negative phase of the Indian Ocean Dipole, the Madden-Julian Oscillation and the Southern Annular Mode. All seemingly in the wrong phase at the same time.

    BY I grew up having 5 am starts riding our race horses and ending the day late with riding horses , running training and other work.
    That was through the 70s so I got a great idea of climate.
    Yes the winters are warmer but the summers are cooler.
    I still remember going to school in 73? and all kids had Togo back inside at lunchtime because our feet were getting burnt on the grass as the temp was over 41c. That day is still the record temp

      No. Summers in Christchurch are getting warmer. I have read every NIWA climate summary going back 20 years. Only 3 of those summers had mean temperatures below the historical average.
      
      2021/2022 was a lousy summer in Christchurch. However the temperature was bang on the historical mean going right back to 1850. What made it seem like a “cool” summer is that about 90 percent of summers going back to 2000 were above the long term average. It was also wet which pissed everyone off, me included. Tomatoes didn’t ripen.
      
      Weather is a funny thing. People remember ‘good’ weather and tend to forget ‘bad’ weather. My partner grew up on the west coast. She was always telling me that when she was a kid, the summers were hotter and dryer than now. She complains that it is always raining there. So I finally got all the data going back to 1965 when she was a kid. The summer rainfall was the same as now. There were wet summers and dry summers. But she remembers the dry summers. That is how childhood memories form. We remember good times.

        It has been subject to ‘Homogenisation’ where they adjusted the data and funnily enough ended up cooling the past and warming the present.
        Besides they use Stevenson Screens here still.

        Back in 2010 and 2011 I answered numerous questions from Rodney Hide on the 7 station series. I had numerous meetings with NIWA about the robustness of this series. I also read a lot of material on the series from multiple perspectives. I had done Stage 2 Biochemistry, Marine Zoology and Ecology, so was reasonably familiar with the relevant science.
        
        There had been shifts in location of some of the stations since 1900, though only by relatively small distances. Mostly to deal with the construction of nearby buildings. NIWA has since published some papers on the 7 station series.
        
        I was satisfied that the 7 station series was robustly constructed, and could be relied upon as an accurate summation of climate trends in New Zealand.
        
        Overall I agree with Benedict on this one. I certainly recall some fabulous summers in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Not just because they were warm, but also because they were not so windy. They also coincided with the pleasures of relative youth. Possibly a distorted memory.

        Fun fact. The earth gets warmer for about 10,000 years coming out of an ice age (an interglacial). The temps wobble up and down quite a bit therein due to numerous chaotic forces. Then it gets cold again for about 100,000 years of ice age. Playing BS games with stats with 200 years of weather doesn’t tell us much.

    As recently as July 4th 2021 a 5.4 frost recorded in Christchurch, Ben. On average 70 frost days a year. We still get them and they can be bloody cold. It’s very unusual to get a ‘cold snap’ bringing snow in October. You will find few locals claiming that winters in the Garden City are warmer than they used to be.

      Perhaps. But that is not what the temperature data tells us.

        Data is only useful if it is measuring the same thing the same way.
        
        Unfortunately the “data” we are given has been tweaked and massaged. It is “corrected”. It is often not even gathered at the same place.
        
        A lot of temperature data is gathered at airports because temperature has always been important for aviation (take off weight calculations etc). Unfortunately airports have changed. No longer are they grass strips in a cow paddock. They are now a square mile of tarmac with airconditioners belting out extra heat.

      Yes but you cannot make conclusions about climate by observations about one day. The mean temperature in the winter of 2021 in Christchurch was 1.2 degrees above average.

        Yes, they’d give me data, but only “corrected” data.
        No, they would not give me the original data. They said they didn’t keep that (to save disk space).
        No, they would not disclose the correction model either.
        
        Whatever you call that process, it is not science. It completely goes against science to destroy the original data.

        @Chris: Yup, since forever, fluctuations shorter than 30 years have been considered weather, not climate.
        
        Unfortunately it is almost impossible to find like-fo-like measurements that are meaningful over longer than 30 years.
        
        For example, the Christchurch airport met station stands close to the runway. The number, and size, of planes passing it – as well as the size of the buildings – has increased dramatically in the last 30 years.
        
        So too has the air quality. Smokey old Chch had a completely different temperature profile to more modern clean-aired Chch.
        
        It is not science to compare them. It is activism.

    I have had two family members living there over the last 6 years and they still get those hard frosts.
    
    The difference is that if we had a 8 degrees departure above normal then every news report would be telling us how this proves AGW is real. When it is 8 degrees below normal it’s just a cold snap and just weather.

  Higher CO2 levels can cause increased snowfall. Especially if there happens to be increased snowfall. If there’s less snowfall, increased CO2 did that as well.
  There is nothing that human-caused CO2 emissions cannot do.

  What we’re _actually_ seeing is just how variable the climate is.
  Human-caused climate change (if you think there is any) amounts to some fraction of the 0.13C/decade (look up the latest UAH temperature data) average temperature rise going on in the planet. People who think that some perceived difference in weather in some location from one decade to the next is down to us pesky humans should think a bit harder.
  Me? I have memories of endless summers in the 70’s, where the tarseal would melt under my feet. I would sunbathe all day long under practically cloudless skies. I don’t notice summers like those any more. Is that because of human-caused climate change? I suspect not. Oh, that was in the middle of a global cooling scare as well. ‘Experts’ were convinced that an ice-age was approaching fast, and people like Leonard Nimoy made documentaries about it.

    Biden spent months criticizing the Saudis (for cheap political points) and tarnishing the previously strong bi-partisan relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia that endured during the Bush/Clinton/Bush/Obama/Trump presidencies.
    
    He then had the gall to meet cap-in-hand when the fuel crisis began pleading to increase production when shutting down US (and by default Russian) supply for domestic political considerations only.
    
    Saudi Arabia is not a beacon for democracy or statesmanship in any sense. However to insinuate this is a 3d political chess move by them is to ignore a far more basic explanation – they were insulted by Biden’s behavior therefore will provide no help to him for what amounts to domestic political favors only that also weakens their economic position. Whatever they are the Saudi leadership are no idiots.
    
    For people that parrot the “New Green Deal” relentlessly Biden and his minders seem to enjoy Saudi Oil and much as Ardern enjoys Indonesian Coal.

      Frank, there’s two competing US views on the relationship with the Saudis.
      
      Option 1 = They’re a key strategic ally, in terms of sourcing energy from them, and in terms of balancing the powers in the Middle East. So they have some sort of “most favoured nation” position, and we will look the other way about their human rights issues etc.
      
      Option 2 = US’s position in world affairs is primarily based on its values, and so this chills the relationship with Saudi lest that weaken the US’s moral power. And dependence on them for energy is a strategic weakness the US should break from (shale, renewables etc). And with the withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan the Middle East is no longer as strategically important as it once was so the US can put a little distance between itself and Saudi.
      
      Obama was Option 1-and-a-half. Trump was heavily Option 1. Biden is more Option 2. As much as anything that progression from Obama (1.5) to Biden (1) reflects progress in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, and development with renewables and shale.
      
      Realistically the US-Saudi relationship is inevitably heading to Option 2. It’s just a question of how quickly.
      
      Meanwhile Saudi has its own set of wants from the US. Military umbrella, crippling Iran, nuclear technology, intelligence etc. They think they are more likely to get that from Trump than from Biden.
      
      They also know that sales of oil will crater long before they extract all the oil from Saudi. They will fight to prolong the gravy train. Trump will give them a longer petrodollar runway than Biden will.
      
      And, crucially, Trump can be bought. Kushner can be bought. Munchin can be bought. No evidence so far that Biden can be, or has been.

        Some points:
        
        Decoupling from Saudi Arabia would be a strategic mistake that would drive the most powerful Arab state into the arms of the Chinese. It would also leave Israel exposed. We revert back to Obama’s quote regarding Biden.
        
        I’d argue it’s not inevitable but will largely depend on the mid terms and 2024. Trump/DeSantis would revert back to previous US strategy around Saudi Arabia. This would make the gulf a far more stable political environment.
        
        US military hardware into Saudi Arabia serves a 2-point purpose. Keeps Saudi Arabia above Iran in regards to Military hardware and allows in the case of a major mid east conflict an ability to have a partner that can assist with the service and repair of hardware. Iran is pushing vigorously with China to get 5th generation fighter planes – if they do they will have air superiority over the Saudis. Again we revert back to Obama’s quote of Joe Biden.
        
        Finally there is no evidence that Trump can be brought. It’s a narrative not borne out by facts. Sure, transactional although as we saw with Russia gate its disinformation at best. Kushner is exiting stage left and I suspect he would not be part of the inner circle should Trump get a second term.
        
        Biden stuffed Afghanistan but that would pale into insignificance if they threw Saudi Arabia towards China/Russia.

        The US decoupling from Saudi is already happening. That will play out over a generation, rather than one Presidential term. But the US can be energy independent, and has strong strategic reasons for breaking its dependency on imported oil. (So do we).
        
        That may strengthen the tie between Saudi, Russia and China. So be it.         And I’m not sure the Chinese will want to be drawn into the Middle East’s religious sectarian wars. But if they were to supply Iran with advanced weapons then perhaps the Saudis would have to consider whether they need the US more than the US needs them. (Which is the intent of current Biden policy, but has been tripped up by the Putin invasion of Ukraine).
        
        As for Trump … he’s never been his own man. He was owned outright by the Italian mob, then by the Russian mob when they rolled up the Genovese crime family in the 1990s. I found it interesting that after yesterday’s opening of the governments books there hasn’t been more glowing commentary from the MSM. With the release, we got the usual smarmy comments from Ardern & Robertson trying to tie the shambles of tax cuts in the UK to National’s policy, even though a number of balanced economists had said they are like chalk & cheese. Maybe its all not as presented by Robertson, and once fact checked, the numbers don’t stack up.
Could be that once some of those more balanced economists got time to review the data and raised some very pertinent questions, around the difference between forecast debit (19 billion) and reported (9 billion); with some even suggesting slight of hand between the government and Treasury and others wanting to see the debit levels of SOE’s as they believed government has likely shifted debit from Core Crown to the SOE’s.
In regard to the income being $108 billion, a key driver seems to be an increased GST tax which appears to be of the back of the current high inflation, higher corporate tax (we hate those businesses) and increase in personal tax due to inflated wages moving folk to a higher tax bracket (You earn we will burn it). If so, we can now understand why Robertson hasn’t been that keen to tackle inflation (it’s an international thing don’t you know).
I’m hoping Nicola Willis has got her research team working on breaking down the charade delivered yesterday, and that she goes all out at exposing what was just a smoke & mirrors exercise as I suspect the average person on street doesn’t share Robertson view, that we are in good shape.

On first browse they come come across as critical and honest but if you read them carefully they are just well constructed spin that leads you to think what he wants you to think – that Labour might not be perfect but they are the best option.

    I spent about 30 mins yesterday scanning the literature on ‘streaming’. It is extensive and there is no way I have time to read it in detail. However the studies seem to be divided. Some say it is good, some bad. But I did not see any that say it is VERY good or VERY bad. That suggests it is not a simple story. And I did not come across any studies that conclude it is ‘racist’ 🙂

        I have no idea what the legal definition of entrapment is, but if spotting someone nearby using their phone while driving is entrapment, then so is any cop driving down the down and spotting someone speeding. Or spotting someone breaking into a house. Or assaulting someone.
        Logically entrapment would be leaning through the car window and asking someone to look something up on their phone, and then charging them with using their phone.
        Posing as a window washer in no way encourages people to use their phone, so it doesn’t look like entrapment to me.

I hope some of the bean counters on this site will critique this.
I have come across a tax measure that I feel is unfair to business. That is, the accrual of holiday pay, that is not paid within 63 days of the end of the financial year, is not a deductible expenses in the year it is accrued.
This sort of thing was not a big deal when we had only two weeks holiday and sophisticated wages computer systems had not been developed.
But with four weeks holidays it is a significant problem.
It is such a dry ball problem but I feel it should be addressed.

I am financially clueless, but to borrow money do you not have to own an asset to borrow against and ensure repayment?
So how do you borrow vast amounts of cash (which is the justification for Three Waters “consolidation” of assets) unless you own the infrastructure concerned?

Or, if Three Waters falls over, a little like Kiwibuild, will councils indirectly forfeit their assets – proportionally?

    He means that he is a Freeman on the land and that the courts have no jurisdiction over him.
    
    They are mostly an American thing, but Canada has enough of them there is a particular law that has been put in place to handle them.

  I didn’t think ACT should have joined at the hip with such a fundraiser, but at least (again) we know where Seymour stands on a matter of principle. For that I approve, but it will repel some.
  Heard Lloyd Burr interview Seymour, who did well again, and then there was some musing about this macabre object.
  But nothing new really.
  A mate of mine had a WW2 momento, which was a UK-made victory bell cast from a downed German plane.
  These were also used to raise money for the ‘RAF benevolent fund’.

School streaming. In the 1980s the public highschool I attended was in a poorer rural area. Year groups were too small for streaming (other than for maths). What the school did have was class options and timing clashes:

Physics clashed with woodwork;
French with Maori studies;
Computer studies with metalwork;
Geography with drama; and so on.

Everyone seemed happy with their choices and got the education they wanted.

Footnote: interestingly most of us took Maori studies, which now I think of as being very progressive for the time.

On Monday, the New York Times published a story about Konnech, a small election software company that has just 27 employees, 21 based in Michigan and six in Australia. The paper reported that Konnech has been the target of “election deniers” who have made it the focus of “a new conspiracy theory about the 2020 presidential election.”
“Using threadbare evidence, or none at all,” the New York Times’s Stuart A. Thompson reported, the “election deniers” said Konnech “had secret ties to the Chinese Communist Party and had given the Chinese government backdoor access to personal data about two million poll workers in the United States.”
In the last two years, the New York Times added, “conspiracy theorists have subjected election officials and private companies that play a major role in elections to a barrage of outlandish voter fraud claims.” But now, “the attacks on Konnech demonstrate how far-right election deniers are also giving more attention to new and more secondary companies and groups.”

Now, this is interesting. The Paul Majurey investigation by PwC on behalf of Auckland Council is turning into an arse-covering exercise.
Goff, Phil Wilson, Jim Stabback, and council officials have released email communications between themselves and Ngati Whatua Whai Rawa bosses Kemble and Styassni over who did what and asked for what and when.
It looks like there’s gunna be someone who is going to get run over by a bus and others are going to duck for cover while others are looking out for no.1 for job preservation post-election. This is turning out to be a major cluster of their own making. Letting someone into the chicken coop who looked like one of them. Clucked like one of them. But has turned out to be a Rooster who is just into having a good time and running amok at eke Panuku, for his own material gain it seems.

This tragedy has definately got many chapters.

  Utter crap appraisal of the traditional Maori, and how they were perceived by those off-shore.
  While Cook praised them highly, as a people without treachery, and was positive around their character, the violence and cannibalism was well on display in early 19th century accounts.
  Incidents such as the Boyd Massacre (as in innocent arrivals might be killed for utu unexpectedly for tresspasses commited by an earlier crew), or the murder of the overly-trusting Du Fresne in the Bay of Islands, or shipwrecked crews captured and eaten (more than once) or treachery, murder and kidnap were well known by potential arrivals in the early & mid-1800s.
  
  Those arrivals & entreprenuers that did well in the earliest times were Pakeha that had value to Maori, as conduits for trade, and were treated comparitively well. Chiefs would consider them ‘my pakeha’.
  Others, such as escaped convicts who turned themselves over to Maori found little sanctuary.
  As Manning wrote in his book ‘Old New Zealand’, one such convict was eaten by his hosts, and this Englishman approved, wryly noting he was a ‘nobody’, and of no use other than to be eaten.
  
  So – the garbage mythologicalising simply as the ‘lovely Maori’ is counter factual, and actual removes some of the truly interesting, darkly humourous or horrible tales of early encounters.
  
  And to be clear, what Maori did was neither right nor wrong UNDER THE STANDARDS OF THE TIME and this is how we should consider conduct of races and cultures from our distant era – including European conduct.
  So, while white folk might be horrified, old-time Maori might shrug shoulders and say that is ‘tika’ (correct). Yet some modern Maori seemingly prefer to pretend these things didn’t happen or downplay them.
  Yes, nobility of character and loyalty and friendship was on display between races, but also some truly awful things too.
  Kind of like the arrival of Europeans in NZ was a mixed bag for Maori, if we can ever be honest about that.
  
  Black/white, good/bad dichotomy: Woke-pretending otherwise is just patronising for all, and a lie.

    First time I arrived in Taiwan, I was seriously discombobulated/culture-shocked having just flown down from spending 1 month wandering around S. Korea.
    
    I must admit I was treated kindly for the couple of weeks I was in Taiwan, but as I have no knowledge of any Chinese (written or spoken) apart from thank you, I was never confident that I was travelling to where I wanted to go, and in the end gave up trying to get over to the East coast.
    
    It was only when I returned to NZ and processed my time in Taipei, Kaohsiung and Kenting, that I realised I’d had a great time.
    
    A few years later my youngest daughter was interested in stopping over in Taipei with me for a few days when we were coming back from the States.
    
    On our first morning as we stepped out of our hotel door it started raining heavily (bucketing down).
    Both daughter and I had Gortex rain parkas on and weren’t too concerned about walking about in the rain, but a Taiwanese man from an apartment block across the road came over with an umbrella for us and insisted we take it.
    
    I think Taiwan is a great place…apart from the Rain in the north and the heat in the south…can’t wait to return.

      The other dimension that is important to visitors is feeling safe. Parts of New Zealand are increasingly not safe. You can’t walk through the major centres after dark (five years ago I would happily have done so). And if you are travelling around the country by car or campervan there is a material risk that you will return to find your vehicle gone or broken into. That is the kind of thing that, literally, wrecks a holiday, manaakitanga or not.

      I consider Taiwan a glimpse of what China might have been on a more enlightened/less repressive path. Mainland Chinese are pretty well known to Chinese in Hong Kong and Taiwan as generally having poorer manners and can be less welcoming. If you cross the borders you can pick this up. But where you have a relationship of introduction even with Chinese, they treat you brilliantly. Guanxi mei guanxi sums it up (=where a relationship; no problem).
      Communism and the cultural revolution, the dog-eat-dog competition and hollow materialism of mainland China means side-by-side they often compare not so favourably to Hong Kongese, Taiwanese or Singaporeans around openness and warm.
      As an aside, I have never felt threatened in any Asian nation the same way you might feel just walking the footpath or shopping in NZ.
      People are too busy to spend time being ‘big man’ or thugs, or perpetrating violence purely for its own sake….(any Asian violence would be pre-planned, and ideally for some tangible-material benefit I expect!).
      
      And the east coast of Taiwan is great.
      Been to Taiwan 6 or 7 times, and the last pre-Covid trip 2019 was 1 month spent doing a circuit in the island and taking in the east primarily. Plenty of wilderness, more of the ethnic minority/’aboriginals’ – good cuisine of course, and I made sure to visit pre-history museums and some archeological sites.
      I made a surface find at Beinan of a polished slate point fragment, and the rim of a ceramic vessel. These items are likely around 3,000 years old.
      Also saw masses of ceramic fragments, from huge jars, bracelets and a spindle whorl fragment laying on an eroding forested slopes at Kaohshiung. This site more like 1,500 years ago. Some of the pottery fragments with imprinted tiny shell fish motifs, or the finger prints of the potter on the inside.
      
      Hoping to get back to Taiwan again and might circuit in the opposite direction, but need Taiwan to drop their silly ongoing MIQ rules.

        To be honest there’s a fair bit of unplanned violence in Asia. In Taiwan you’re most likely to come across it while driving (annoy the wrong driver and he’ll jump out of his car swinging a baseball bat) or in nightclubs (annoy the wrong guy and he’ll call half a dozen friends to deal with you when you leave, despite you assuming the little altercation was long over). However, truly random violence is almost non-existent.

Kudos to Aaron Siri. His organisation has used the courts to obtain CDC data for the approximate 10 million v-safe users

ICAN has now obtained CDC data for the approximate 10 million v-safe users.

As explained in our prior update, v-safe is a new smartphone-based CDC program that allows users to register after getting a Covid-19 vaccine and provide health check-ins. ICAN wanted to obtain this data. So, it deployed its legal team, headed by Aaron Siri, to obtain the v-safe data.

After suing the CDC twice, and following months of legal wrangling, the CDC finally capitulated, resulting in a court order that required it to produce this data. The first batch of data, containing 144 million rows of health entries by v-safe users, has now been obtained by ICAN.

Aaron Siri was finally able to force the CDC to relinquish their V-safe data, which showed over 10% of recipients suffered significant adverse reactions to vaccination. This article will explain why that is so important.

Of the 10,108,273 users who participated in V-Safe the following was found (you can review the data yourself here, keep in mind there will always be a degree of underreporting that occurs):
1. 1,225,867 (12.13%) were unable to perform their normal activities.
2. 1,344,330 (13.3%) missed work or school.
3. 782,913 (7.7%) required medical care, on average 2.7 times.

This is bad. Really bad. Hundreds of millions of people have been injected with a dangerous genetic substance, and the agencies charged with preventing harm have instead facilitated harm.

  I tried explaining this to a good friend, that the jabs don’t work and never did, that the lockdowns did more harm than good. They got very wound up and told me to get out of my rabbit hole……
  I had to walk away and write this friend of as currently a lost cause. I hope they wake up sooner or later.
  This is why I detest Ardern so much. The physical, mental, financial and societal harm she has caused and continues to cause is inalculable. She is a walking, talking wrecking ball of the highest order I have ever seen.

Now an American, who writing in Stuff of New Zealand uses the term “we”, says the country had a racial “segregation era”.

There was local discrimination, but what discrimination laws were there in NZ?

If there was some sort of official segregation in NZ why have there been scores of thousands of inter-race marriage? Why are hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders of mixed White-Maori blood, and usually proud of the Maori component?

The disturbing thing is that this seeder of discord’s book is designed for school pupils.

  Thing is, the monotonously one-sided/single directional retelling of crimes from one race against another is feeding grievance and hatred in generations that never experienced it.
  
  It is ugly, but it is academic only – yet you CAN teach racial hatred in the 21st century if this is where you want to focus emotional energy on those who are impressionable.
  
  How about the murders of Pakeha farmers or surveyors in the Waikato after the Land Wars ended? Or the killing (tomahawking and mutilation) of children found on farms south of Auckland in 1863, or the slaughter of whole families, including infants and toddlers at Matawhero in 1868?
  
  Even if I credit the author as accurate in all the listed examples of rules around toilets or access to businesses (I suspect some at least are; racism and bigotry was likely even more unashamedly open in the past) – it is hardly a key aspect to teach students in reviewing NZ history.
  
  As a counter anecdote against the Waacist doom and gloom version if NZ in yesteryear: back inthe 1990s I questioned a NZ WW2 pilot about his service on our shore doing naval patrolling.
  This old bloke said that when the Yanks came over some of them entered the NZ mess, and commented, ‘We ain’t gonna drink with niggers’, when they saw Maori already within.
  The pakeha servicemen stood back and enjoyed while they watched the new-arrivals from America receive a good hiding from their Maori comrades.
  It was obviously a fond memory.
  
  ….But a ‘nice’ story like that of comradeship or comparative racial harmony in NZ does not fit with an academic agenda, attention seeking, or media click bait.

Big oil producers last night (NZ time) agreed to reduce oil output from next month by two million barrels a day.

They were meeting in Vienna as OPEC Plus, the traditional OPEC group of oil exporters plus other big producers, chiefly Russia.

In three months the market price of crude oil has fallen from about $US120 a barrel to about $US80.

President Biden has pressed foreign oil producers to pump more oil. In reaction to the latest OPEC Plus decision, he ordered another 10 million barrels of oil released from the United States strategic reserve.

Biden also said the US Congress would be consulted on seeking other ways to lessen OPEC’s hold on oil prices.

In March, Biden announced he would release a million barrels of oil a day from the reserve. This was expected to a total release of 180 million barrels, up to this month.

OPEC – the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries – was founded by Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, and Venezuela. Other current members, in order of their joining, are: Libya, Congo, Gabon, Algeria, Nigeria, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, and United Arab Emirates.

The additional countries which make up OPEC Plus are: Oman, Sudan, Brunei, Russia, Mexico, Bahrain, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and South Sudan.

Countries that have withdrawn from OPEC, mainly because of quotas: Ecuador, Indonesia, and Qatar.

Meanwhile, Russia has agreed to supply the Taliban Government of Afghanistan yearly with: 1 million tons of petrol, 1 million tons of diesel,, 500,000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas, and 2 million tons of wheat.

It is speculated that Afghanistan will in return give Russia access to minerals and supply agricultural goods.

How can you be so stupid and spend $500,000 in rent after Auckland Cycle Crossing has been canned.
The Government spent nearly $500,000 on office space for the now abandoned $785 million Northern Pathway project that was to be used on the planned Auckland Harbour Crossing.
By the time the project was canceled 51 million had been spent on design consultants and engineering plan fees along with $500,000 in office spaces part of the $ 785million cost.

The Southland District Council has will give priority to revising rules around plantation forestry as foreigners buy farms to turn them into non-harvested forests for carbon credits.

Southland Federated Farmers president Chris Dillon welcomed the move, reports the Southland Times. The group had opposed unmanaged long-term plantation forestry on rural land for a long time.

“Good clean country is going to be destroyed by pine trees,” Dillon said.

Long-term effects of mass planting of trees which were not harvested would include erosion, pests, weed invasion, and fire risk.

Big overseas companies were buying farms to mass plant with pine trees for carbon credits. An ecological disaster waiting to happen.

Southland District’s Mayor, Gary Tong, said he understood three farms near Tuatapere had been sold to overseas buyers and were being turned into carbon forests.

“We need to stop this as quickly as we can with our own district plan because it doesn’t appear Government are in a position to be able to do it,” Tong said.

I’ve been thinking about criminal sentencing guidelines where having an abusive childhood earns the crim a discount off the baseline sentence.

Now, the government line is that prison is for rehabilitation not punishment.

Given rehabilitation is the goal, then surely those from troubled backgrounds need to spend more time in rehab so we have this round the wrong way.

So I suggest that those crimes from good backgrounds get given a reduction in sentence, while those from abusive backgrounds have their sentences increased. It really makes perfect sense.

Salford University in Britain is scrapping the term of “master” clock and “slave” clock for a system where one clock device sets the time for a network of “clocks”.

This is part of the university’s move to “de-colonise” its language. The prime suggestion for replacement terms so far is “leader” clock and “followers”.

“Master” and “slave” have been used for such time systems for at least two centuries.

In other Woke moves, Salford University demoted sonnets in creative writing assessment at Salford because they are “products of white Western culture”.

Salford is within greater Manchester.

Police in Thailand say more than 30 people were killed Thursday in a shooting at a childcare centre in the northwest of the country.

Police Major General Achayon Kraithong said the gunman opened fire early in the afternoon (local time) in the centre in the town of Nongbua Lamphu.

He said 30 people were killed but had no more details. Following the shooting, the assailant took his own life.
