It doesn’t mater how long you have to wait but the truth should overcome the lies that have been told and the day of reckoning is not far away according to the results of the latest Roy Morgan Political Poll.
Then in today’s Herald we have the headlines ” Covid Bloodbath expected as Government opens books today.”

  A month or so ago Claire Trevett , I think, had an item in the Ferald abot the declining polls , and in it she did refer to politicians getting into a ‘death spiral’ fromwhich they can’t recover .
  
  I believe we’ve reached that point , and I expect to see the media now to wake up to the fact that their pardy is over .

    I think you need to take a closer look at Sir Cullen’s posts. He / she / it is clearly satirical … and their true colours are occasionally shown with serious posts about how inept / incompetent this govt have been.
    It can seem a bit repetitive and tedious at times, sometimes the funniest part about it is the reactions from people who take it seriously.

  Is this one of the reasons why Speaker Mallard, the person who gave Police permission to use excessive force on (and near) Parliamentary grounds, is being moved to Ireland, so he can’t be held accountable?
  
  Or so the PM can say they have removed him from his position, and that the new Speaker cannot comment …. therefore no further comment from the Labour Party?

    I recall one of our bigger “news” agencies reported how on the morning of the big clear out some Sgt or other had ( allegedly) ordered a press photographer to delete his photos off his camera , and complied. This was of the big mobilisation in the early hours.
    
    I wonder if they put in a complaint .
    
    I wonder by what authority the particular police officer was acting under.
    
    That sort of behaviour is more reminiscent of some sort of fascist military dictatorship than of a liberal democratic Westminster tradition free society or indeed of the Commissioners much touted “policing by consent”.

    RTP – the same, but I quite like angry drivers using their cars to cut me off or nudge me off the road. It what I deserve as I don’t pay user charges to repair the damage my bike does to the roads.
    
    Can we give this cyclist hatred a break. Some of us do it for exercise because we can’t run or play any other active sports. We have a vested interest in keeping out of the way of cars, and I know that as we filter through the traffic in the morning seeing us pass you as you sit stuck behind the other cars makes you fume. It’s life. Chill, you’ll live longer.

        I’m also free to legally use the road while biking and choose to do so. I promise you that nobody is deliberately stopping you from “getting on with your day” and if cyclists are a red rag to you, you probably need some help before you kill or cause a life altering injury to somebody just like you.     While we are talking about stupid, what about every councils roading plan.
    
    Physics tells us that stop / start traffic is the least efficient from an energy perspective yet the councils are all trying to save the planet by making drivers routes less efficient. Less efficient equals more polluting.
    
    Even if one was to excuse this as short term pain while we transition away for petrol vehicles that makes no sense either. The thing we are transitioning too is electric cars (trains aren’t going to work in our tiny cities), electric vehicles need roads and are more efficient without stop starting too.
    
    Its time for people to step back from the ideas promoted by the looney green community and look at ‘the science’. To reduce CO2 pollution in NZ the obvious steps are, improving traffic flows and decommissioning our coal power stations and replacing with Nuclear.

        I live in CHCH, and biked to work today. I am totally aware of the madness of our coucil.
        
        CHCH like all other councils believes that the future is biking, walking and public transport. Thats just a pipe dream because NZ doesn’t have the population density for it to work. Councils, such as AKL have tried to increase density by restricting land supply. That leads to massive price increases for housing, and we still dont have the population.
        
        The future for most of NZ is efficient vehicle transport, the greenies and dreamers need to face reality.

        Well, it is a pollutant above a certain level. I believe people in submarines can tolerate up to 5000 ppm.
        
        I heard one “geo-engineering” suggestion of allowing Co2 gobbling genetically engineered algae to be released into the oceans so that it can be scooped up and converted to oil. You burn the algae derived oil products as they are carbon-neutral, as they get soaked up by this same ocean algae. Imagine if that went horribly wrong and sucked too much Co2 out of the atmosphere! Plants would die and therefore so would all terrestrial life!

        According to the yank OSHA: “CO2 levels as high as 80,000 ppm can be lethal. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has established a CO2 acceptable exposure limit (PEL) of 5,000 ppm over an eight-hour period and 30,000 ppm over a ten-minute period as a guideline.
        
        Current atmospheric Co2 levels are around 400ppm (or 0.04% of the total atmosphere). Plants (and therefore all terrestrial life) dies, if atmospheric Co2 gets below 150ppm. During long ice ages the atmosphere has come close to this. Cold oceans absorb more Co2. Oceans hold a LOT more Co2 than the atmosphere.

The news of the robbery of a liquor store by a gang of thugs continues the story of the wave of brazen criminality that has swept across our country. Customers walked away with their hands up. The owner shut the roller door to try and lock the thieves in but they escaped out the back door. As usual the police arrived too late.

What’s to be done? First we need a change of government. Nothing will change under Labour who appear to have an ideological aversion to enforcing the law around property and theft.

Secondly a new government needs to instruct the police to take all measures to stop this crime wave. Including police chasing offenders.

Thirdly the laws need to be changed. Youth crime needs to incur a severe punishment.

Fourthly property owners must be allowed to defend themselves. Self defence must be given precedence in the law. Security guards must be empowered to defend the stores and the malls from robbers.

This will never happen under this government. A vote for them is a vote for the continued descent of our once law abiding nation into anarchy and despair.

    MHJ stores are designed with big wide-open entrances making is easier for a group of them to quickly come in and exit. They don’t seem to do the same with other jewellers as their stores have 1 single door in and out. Also MHJ in Albany is right by the mall entrance/exit which probably also adds to the attraction of daylight robberies.

Each instance of misinformation from her or her Ministers can be relentlessly challenged with the question – is it a weapon of war? MSM will pop heads back in the sand, but social media is the goto for an increasing number of voters.

Family member of one of the vicious and brutal Pukekohe girls (Herald). Pretty much this >> She’s a good girl really, we had no idea. We’ll get Oranga Tamariki and the police involved (police at least are already of course) – and because we said sorry we’ll be happy with the damp bus ticket. But we raised her right so it’s not our fault.

OK might not be completely fair on the family, but if they really didn’t know about their nasty vicious girl they were not paying attention. Time for caregivers to be called to account for the actions of their minor offspring. Big payments to victims please – inadequate but a start by hitting family in the pocket.

  You know exactly what sort of family life the attacking girls have had: straight out of Once Were Warriors. If their parent(s) (let’s face it, dad is probably not on the scene) give a shit at all they are probably proud of how staunch their girls are for not taking any shit and dishing out a good hiding at some perceived slight.

When I look back on my life the people I’ve known who had shit patents and an abusive childhood, went on to work bloody hard and make something of themselves.       You can throw the racism card at me if it makes you feel better, IDGAF, if this was white kids bashing any other ethnicity it would be front page news for a week and we’d have Adern and every left wing pundit wringing their hands about white supremacy and telling us we need some new crackdown and restriction of some sort.     Guys used to get whacked across the bum by the priests until they bled.

  The family of this vicious female thug are responsible for her upbringing – but it only is a continuation of the tribal way of life. Physical confrontation is the norm in tribes – whether it is a conventional maori tribe or an urbanised tribe. Unless that is recognised and acknowledged (and it won’t be by the Liemore Party), nothing will happen to change things. Solution right now? Harsh penalties for the family and even harsher penalty for the perpetrator. Starting point would be for her to work after school and all her earnings to go to the victim.   Also what on-going assistance is being given to the victims? Apart from (hopefully) receiving treatment for their injuries, do they get ongoing help and counseling (or do the victims deal with on-going anxiety and mental health issues on their own)?
  
  How about a community support service where other volunteer youngsters and young adults take them “under their wing” and restore their confidence by accompanying them around town or such like? Maybe attend some self-defence courses with them so they don’t feel vulnerable if they encounter those roaming thugs again?
  
  I’m sure there are $ millions for “do nothing wrap around services” than can be siphoned off from these thugs to better support victims (and penalise the thugs’ parents with some fines perhaps)?

    One of the objectives of the trip is to ‘foster parliamentary cooperation with Argentina’.
    
    Why? Firstly, apart from the Mexican MP, I doubt any New Zealand MPs are fluent in Spanish. That makes it kind of difficult.

I have heard much concern about the awfully low turn out for local body elections. Commentators are wringing their hands asking; “Why?”
Please look to Chris Trotter’s most informative and thought provoking essay dated 29th September. He labelled it;

In an erudite manner he has pin pointed why the turn out is so low. It is possibly one of his best essays. I regret that my information technology skills are inadequate, so I am unable to link to it.

  $tuff and the Herald must be very pleased with the success of their pre-election campaign of outing “dangerous candidates for whom we must not vote”.
  It has been a big turn-off for a lot of voters who lost confidence in the democratic process and didn’t want to be involved in dirty politics in case it was used against them somehow.
  Look out for a similar performance next year prior to the general election.
  Money can’t buy you love but it can buy media influence.

Out hiking I bumped into a couple of millennials in NZ on work visas, one from Boston, the other Swedish.
Interesting conversation. They had been in QT, we got on to how they were travelling / how were the roads. The girl said “they are fine, potholes are not that bad, in the US local authorities are digging up smaller tarmac roads and replacing them with gravel as they can’t afford to maintain them. (I looked for this online – can’t find any evidence, anyone know?)

I asked the boy about Sweden and all the crime we are hearing about. He said “well it’s going to be so much worse now we have this far right party in government” and when I questioned how far right they are he said they were established by Nazis. I said “but they are saying that (except fascists) about the new Italian PM too and it’s not true there…” and he assured me that she def a “far right fascist” and “very dangerous “.

So interesting to hear these perspectives. The views of millennials brought up with all the socialist propaganda are probably similar the world over.

  Hebe, my wife and I have very good Swedish friends, and as far back as 2000, the husband was telling me things were going pear shaped there. Last conversation I had was a month ago, and his view was things are not well in his country. The problem is that the youngsters of today, have never seen Sweden like it was 30 years ago.     A few months ago speaking with a geotech engineer he said this exact problem existed in NZ I.e. a few years back many gravel, low usage roads were tarsealed, but no thought had been given to the extra cost of maintaining the tar seal.

  The “bus driver shortage” is rather bizarre.
  Here in Chch there is more of a passenger shortage.
  Most buses will have 2 or less passengers and there are heaps of buses.
  We could cut back to half the buses and nobody would tell the difference.
  Even better would be to get rid of the buses completely (except maybe at peak times).

    The NZ Herald talks about the councils paying a base rate of $27. Not much chance for earning tips as a bus driver, either. But on the other hand, hours would be predictable and easy.
    
    The restaurants and bars are repeatedly told by government that they simply need to pay more to attract people. Stupid visa rules are stopping them bringing in chefs because overseas-trained candidates need to have their qualifications checked against NZ course standards by a bureaucrat – rather than doing the obvious thing and letting employers do their own quality assurance.
    
    It’s interference and picking winners throughout the economy.

    We need PT. There are old folks and other people who do not have cars. Or bikes. But in Christchurch it is clearly not fit for purpose. I agree – I drive around the city every day. 10 people on a bus is unusual outside peak travel times. I would like to see a business case for an ‘uber’ like system using minibuses.       Rubbish. There are many other ways of ferrying these people around – from taxis to private buses.
      
      A bus costs a lot to run:
      * $30/hr or whatever for the driver. At 30km/hr average that’s $1 per km.
      * Other management costs etc: $2/km
      * Diesel 30l/100km = 75 cents per km.
      * Depreciation: $2/km
      * Other expenses (servicing, insurance, tyres, …): $2 per km.
      So call that $8/km.
      
      It would be way cheaper to run old people around in “free” taxis!

    I have often said we want ‘pickup taxied’ aka minibuses on lots of different runs and you wouldn’t need other than a car license to run them. They work so well in the islands. Hundreds of different routes and even out of the way places getting service.

      Exactly. The drivers and owners of these minibuses become experts in how to design routes and times to maximise their profits from the fares. The drivers of the giant buses in Christchurch are happy if there are no passengers. It makes their job easier.

      The minibus taxi is one of the successes of Africa (if you can distance it from the taxi violence/mafia).
      
      The key to making them work is deregularion (or in the case of Africa, having regulations which everyone ignores).
      
      As already pointed out, being market driven they put on services where they are needed and where they will find customers. That is very different to NZ buses that ride empty because that’s what the schedule and the union says..
      
      In Cape Town in the early 1990s we had a friend of 75 (a frail old bird who lived alone) who rode the minibus taxis all the time even though her friends offered to take her anywhere/any time. They were cheap and effective. Her being the only white person on a taxi full of coloureds and blacks never bothered anyone.

I was listening to Tim Dower interviewing the head of the post-primary teachers’ union on ZB this morning.
They want to ban streaming.
Because it is ‘harmful to students and doesn’t work’.
First of all, I agree with Joe Bennett, the stuff columnist, that schoolchildren are pupils and not students.
Anyway …
I come from an era of streaming – the 50s and 60s.
I had two years in standard 2. When I went to our rural, small-town college I was not anywhere near 3A, which was for the bright kids – some of them later became lawyers, businesspeople (including the rabid communist who was a multi-millionaire by 30), accountants, farmers, teachers.
Most of them did well. Others never realised their potential, and some of them were a surprise that they didn’t.
On the other hand there was the kid who started in 3E (expected to leave on the 15th birthday) who climbed through the streams, got his university entrance, and later became a well-known principal of a rather large high school.
I had two goes at school certificate and two at UE.
Here’s the thing I learned: if you want to feel as if you’re a failure you will be.
My parents and older siblings never let me feel a failure. They never told me I was a failure. They said over and over again that I was not and that I had worth and that I should always keep trying to do my best.
It’s a message I hammered with my own children.
It’s a matter of attitude. You can feel a failure if you wish.
In 1988 my son started school. I had sent him along knowing his alphabet, how to write his name (first and surnames), basic arithmetic. He was a keen reader; he could pick out and say words.
Six months later I noticed he had gone backwards. All of the above was all but erased. His speech had become slovenly.
I raised this with his teacher. She airily told me that they’d had to ‘put a brake on him’ because he was so far ahead of the other children that they worried about his socialisation.
I hit the roof (cliche, sorry). My children came from a solo parent, DPB home. The only thing that offered a promise of a better life for them was an education.
I went to the principal, who was 67, and old-school.
‘Leave it with me,’ he said.
My boy picked up and another, old-school woman teacher was assigned to help the young teacher in her classes.
My children progressed through the school system. Despite what the PPTA might think schoolkids know who are the braniacs and who aren’t – and the kids are quite blunt about it. They always have been.
What I heard from Melanie Webber of the PPTA this morning was an attempt at social meddling and engineering.
Maori, Pacific Island, ‘dumb’ kids do not need grown-ups coddling them and telling them that it’s all right to feel a failure and ‘stink’.
They need to be told ‘don’t give up’ and ‘you can do it if you try’.

  I totally agree with you. As a high school teacher, I denounce my own PPTA position that streaming somehow necessarily disadvantages Maori or Pasifika. This is rubbish. It assumes in an Uncle Tom way they are all dumb. They are not.

    I remember when ‘social progression’ was introduced to primary schools.
    In stead of moving up levels as they learnt to read/write/ do sums, kids were advanced by age to stay within their peer group.
    So when you turned 6, you moved up a level. It didn’t matter if you hadn’t learnt your alphabet, or count to 100 – you would learn this as you matured along with your friends.
    Before this advance in educational thinking you’d stay in the primers until you could read simple sentences and chant the times tables. Being left behind acted as an incentive to try harder.
    As Trypewriter says, kids know who are the clever ones, or the lazy ones or the simply ‘slow’ ones. And most people understand that the slow learner at 6 can be the teenage whizzkid – and vice versa.
    In my opinion there’s great incentive in recognising progress at a young age, and rewarding it by promoting effort.

  Putting this ideology into practice. In Christchurch, Chisnalwood intermediate is a good school, parents choose to send their kids there. Schools around it are not as good, parents do not choose to send their kids there.
  
  answer: Jacinda and her cronies elect to reduce the Chisnalwood roll by 200 and force some children into the other schools to hide the lack of achievement by smoothing out the bumps.
  
  Corollary: the headmaster is suing education department to try and avoid being forced to lay off his staff by reducing his role by 200 by government edict.
  
  This is discrimination.

    Streaming seems a non-issue these days. Kids stream themselves by their subject choices, especially where it matters in the senior high school levels. Kids who muck around with low-level credits generally don’t end up in Y13 physics classes.
    The virtue of streaming in my view is that those teachers who still want to stretch their kids and not cater to the lowest common denominator can do so.
    Mixed classes are just about always dumbed-down classes whatever teachers say about differentiation.

    Fair enough. Free country and all that. OTOH teachers have all put a fair amount of time and effort into getting their professional qualifications. I think they are pretty unique among the professions in that they have to put up with a lot of criticism from people who
    (a) figure they know how it should really be done (b) do not have their professional qualifications.
    And of course these people are free to express their opinions too.
    
    So if there is a majority opinion against streaming in the profession we really can’t just dismiss it out of hand. On the whole, teachers know more about teaching than non-teachers do. Just like doctors, nurses, engineers and electricians.
    
    FWIW if you google round a bit about high school streaming in other countries you will find anti- sentiments in a number of them. Go figure.

    This time nine years ago at my local library I was running informal classes in basic English for kids who’d been allowed to progress through the school system.
    They were, for the most part, illiterate.
    Now as adults they’d come to the screeching realisation that being illiterate wasn’t cool any more.
    But you have to ask: how come their teachers over more than a decade had allowed them to progress?

  I was a average, mid- stream student at high school in the 1960’s.
  This high school thought of itself as pretty damn good. But only students who excelled at sports, drama/music/art and academic subjects (in that order) were admired or even noticed.
  I decided to leave before the 7th form. To do that I had to be interviewed by the principal who wanted to know what were my future plans.
  When told, the principal laughed and said I had no show and should look to find something more realistic.
  This was the first time in my 6 year attendance at this school (including the intermediate section) that the principal had spoken to me in an individual setting. Didn’t even know my name.
  I did leave and achieved the career I had planned.
  I didn’t think streaming was a bad idea. It incentivised some students to do better and look to move up to the A stream next time – which is what I found mirrored in the workplace.

  Streaming is the only way to do things.
  
  Do we just have one league for sports players? Nope: we have pub grade, various club levels and elite. We have grades for women and people with one leg.
  
  This allows everyone a good balance of development and competition.
  
  Streaming is somewhat similar. If thick Johnnie is in with a bunch of clever kids then either, or both, of the following happen:
  * The whole class is held up waiting for Thick Johnnie to understand. It is thus a complete waste of time for the others.
  * Thick Johnnie eventually feels embarrassed about wsasting everyone elses’ time and withdraws – falling out of the system.
  
  Streaming makes the maximum usage of school time to develop the kids and make their resources available to the world.

  Thought I’d mention my experience of streaming, big school. It was simply a revelation. I had almost no idea I was smart enough to be in the top stream, coming from a highly dysfunctional family. Once I realised, I put in some extra effort and stayed near the top of the class, sometimes top in subjects. No parent at prizegivings.
  
  There was pressure to leave early but I just ignored it and stayed till 7th form. A small class by that point, and I was the only one to go straight out to work.
  
  Only saying because I don’t see others with a similar story in the media, only the MoE and teacher positions.

She is the Headmistress of a school in Wembley, London and she has firm views on the value of discipline, motivation to succeed, rewards for success and pride in uniform. Her school’s results are outstanding. She has been made the Chair of the Social Mobility Commission whose aims include raising and inspiring children from deprived backgrounds to educational excellence. Well worth a listen. When I was teaching in the Hutt Valley in the 1960’s colleagues wanted to ban Shakespeare from the curriculum as irrelevant for children from state houses.

There is a well-worn adage amongst surveyors of history. “Never March on Moscow.” I expect the Ukrainians will stop at their UN recognised border (after retaking their annexed 2014 Crimea), consolidate, and perhaps offer Russia a sea port on the Crimea to be managed together.   1. No. There would be no international support for the Ukraine to do that. The Ukraine is totally dependent on international support particularly from the US and Europe for the foreseeable future, for both prosecuting the war and for the reconstruction that will be required afterwards. They cannot afford to alienate that support. They will stop at the border.
  
  2. It might. A military defeat for Moscow will have catastrophic consequences for it.
  
  3. In the short term no. In the long term, highly likely. It will depend on the outcome of 2.

A popular multi-use trail in Fiordland is incomplete and the trust that created it in limbo as it waits for the Department of Conservation (DoC) to review plans that are years overdue. A 2km section falls within Fiordland National Park. No bikes in parks is ridiculous. Stupidity at it’s best.
Remember girls and boys, we are paying their salaries, and for what???? Red tape creates red tape.

His latest interview is with a fellow nutter who doesnt want Shelly Bay to go ahead for a number of dumb reasons but especially Sea Level Rise.
Of course when challenged they all talk about predictions whilst blithely ignoring real observed data.
From 1944 to 2018 the rise in Wellington has been 2.7 mm pa- within the Global Average of 2-3 mm pa. And its NOT accelerating.

    I’m sure NZ cops have some of these powers already. Many people were paid visits during COVID for reasons, supposedly, of incitement.
    
    The recently-shelved hate speech law was only the first battle of the war. It’s clear the government has gone away and rethought their strategy, and Ardern’s UN speech about shutting down dissent is a clear statement of intent about future laws.

        Private through ACC. Motorcycle accident 11/9/2017 (not my fault). Broke a bunch of bones, nerve damage (brachial plexus injuries required nerve reconstruction and grafting to reverse upper arm paralysis). Nobody bothered to MRI the knee or else they would have discovered I retore my ACL and ripped the cartilage out. Walked on it for 3 years after the bones healed until in December 2020 I tripped in a pothole and the knee swelled up hugely and didn’t get better. Went to the GP in December 2020, sent to specialist February 2021. The specialist put in the claim to ACC in March 2022. So 15 months to get to the point where a surgeon had a good case with ACC and six months to assess it. Once approved three weeks wait before surgery. Hasn’t cost me a cent though, and I am fairly young (55) and can handle pain so I’m not complaining. From Scottish and Latvian stock so I have been taught not to kick up a fuss and get on with it.

        A friend who is a Surgeon says its over 9 months and more likely a year.
        They stopped doing operations for 9 months last year. Nothing was done. He said they could easily have kept doing operations during Covid. And now they are trying to deal with it.
        Funnily enough he said Akld DHB wont contract the work to private clinics whereas every other DHB does.

        Yeah. Relative needed a hip replacement last year. Had it done this August and only then after a complete collapse of the hip, the last 6 weeks before it was dine he was on morphine hourly to try control the pain. Gp said once it was done he was surprised the pain hadn’t caused a heart attack

        My sympathy for you riffer – Knee/knee joint replacement is very painful. Had my right knee done 10 years ago and was supposed to have the left one done a few months later, but though without any cartelege, I had no pain, so canned it & its still ok. But the post op. pain was pretty intense. Was supposed to be out of action for at least 6 weeks, but like you I have a high pain threshold, so was back walking & driving in 3 weeks. Pain subsided after 6 weeks, but on pain killers for that time.

I’m a bit surprised that Bunnings are denying the use of facial recognition in their stores. I assumed that it was widespread nowadays in retail malls and larger shops. In fact, I thought it went well beyond basic facial recognition, using it to help design shop/thoroughfare layout etc.
I work on the basis that they know when I arrive, know where I go, know which shops I enter, and know what I buy.
At least.

Can the US control this?

Saudi Arabia, Russia, and other oil producers are believed to be poised to announce deep cuts in output. The cuts are expected to be announced at a meeting of “OPEC Plus” tonight (NZ time) in Vienna, reports the Financial Times.

Saudi Arabia and Russia are pushing for reductions of one million to two million barrels per day, though this might be phased in over months.

Analysts say this will likely trigger counter-measures by the US.

Oil prices have fallen from about $US120 a barrel in early June. Brent crude, $US91.50 today, is up 8 per cent on last week.

Russia is not a member of OPEC, but is part of the broader group, “OPEC Plus”.

The United Arab Emirates Energy and Infrastructure Minister, Suhail Al Mazrouei, a former president of OPEC, said on CNBC earlier this year that no other country could match Russia’s energy output.

When energy importers spoke to OPEC Plus, “they need to speak to us including Russia, ” the Minister said.
