  Both Crown prosecutor Anna Pollett and Meyer’s lawyer Rachael Adams submitted that a sentence of home detention would be most appropriate – despite the Crown accepting imprisonment would be the ordinary sentence for this sort of offending; “and indeed one of many years”.

      Tony: That’s a perfectly legitimate question to ask. It must be borne in mind however that at the end of the day it is the Judge’s job to hand down a just sentence which is consistent with all the facts of the matter and the offender’s personal circumstances.
      
      I do not believe this sentence remotely provides justice for the young victims of this prick.

        I couldn’t agree more David. But given that the Crown Prosecutor and defence lawyer were agreed that Home D was an appropriate sentence, the odds of an appeal on the grounds that the sentence was manifestly light are somewhere approaching nil.
        
        We all know that Labour wants to keep the prison population down, so again I ask, is Crown Law colluding to ensure this happens?

    The lack of remorse seems to tie back to the fact that he defended the charges. He was 16 at the time of the offending but other than that it is hard to tell what allowed the judge to get the sentence below two years so he could impose home D. An adult who raped a number of women would be looking at double figures.

  Notwithstanding the obvious fact that this guy is seriously disturbed, you need to remember:
  
  New Zealand has three branches of Government:
  
  The Legislature consists of Members of Parliament and the Governor-General. The role of the Legislature is to make laws (legislation), and to scrutinise the Executive.
  
  The Executive consists of Ministers (both inside and outside Cabinet) and Government departments. The role of the Executive is to decide policy, propose laws (which must be approved by the Legislature) and administer the law.
  
  The Judiciary consists of all judges. The role of the judiciary is to interpret and apply the law. There are two main sources of law: statutes (the laws passed by Parliament) and the ‘common law’. The common law has been developed by judges over the centuries, and may be altered by the courts to meet changing circumstances.
  
  The three branches operate independently from one another, a principle known as the ‘separation of powers’. This principle is intended to prevent abuses of power, as each branch acts as a check on the others.
  
  Even if the government wanted the judiciary to act differently they are unable to, and it is disingenuous of you to suggest influence on the judiciary.
  
  Additionally, I think Debbi Tohill is way off suggesting a link between porn and this behaviour. If that were true, given NZers are some of the largest consumers of porn in the world, our rape statistics would be far worse than they already are.
  
  I suspect somewhere in this individual’s upbringing something has gone massively wrong.
  But I am not silly enough to suggest that it has anything to do with the government that was around when he was a child.

        The belief by a certain subset of those currently inhabiting this planet that they, A – have the right and/or duty to decide which current creatures and plants deserve to live and which have to die – in some insane idea they can “preserve” some sort of perceived Utopia forever in some form of terrarium, and B – that in the couple of millions of years that this rock we live on has been flying through the universe and in which we’ve only kept reasonable climate records for a minute period in time – that they have decided our actions in this blip of time have brought the planet to the brink of extinction, these beliefs can only be described as narcissistic, delusional, nonsensical insanity.
        
        These people, DOC, the Greens, the “climate change” doomsayers, they are certifiable and they are also very, very dangerous, maniacal ideologues. Their belief in their position has taken on religious proportions of the worst kind. They believe they have identified the perfect point in the history of the planet to stop evolution in its tracks and preserve all existing native species. Oh, except for those pesky weka who won’t play the game and keep eating other birds’ eggs as they’ve done forever, they had to be wiped out with a aerial poison drop on an offshore island. The most ironic part of that world saving event is, it was DOC who put the weka onto that island in the first place to protect them because they were endangered!! Talk about idiotic.
        
        Every strand of the web of life we are part of is connected. Fuck with one part and you have no idea of the implications for other parts, of the devastation and destruction you might unleash.
        
        But these idiots in their arrogance and narcissism know better. They really do believe they can create a Utopia. That they are the ones to choose what lives and dies. That they can “control” the climate. That we can all get “free” energy from the sun and we’ll all live happily ever after.
        
        There aren’t adequate words to describe how utterly stupid these narcissists are. The worrying thing is their numbers appear to be growing and they are getting more militant. Maybe this winter when they are freezing to death in northern Europe they’ll have time to reconsider whether or not oil and gas are viable forms of energy or not. I’d bet a fiver that nothing has changed. Instead of constant inundation by ordinary rainfall, embankments and barrages on both sides of the river have caused massive build ups of silt, consequent heavy rainfall causes upstream breaches and catastrophic inundation.         Batty, no I didn’t read the whole document. I watched the UK Column analysis of the document by Vanessa Beeley that was hyperlinked in the CW article. Beeley gave her opinion and referenced the parts of the document she found that were of concern. She posts the screenshots. I agree with her analysis of the document.
        
        Batty I advise you to watch the analysis and tell me which part is wrong and why.
        I found the language used to be horrific. Especially in reference to children 0-4 and 4-6.

The trouble for Dr Haworth is that Labour has almost been in government for five years. In that time, the emergency housing waiting list has gone from around 5000 to over 27,000, the cost of putting people up in motels has risen from $80,000/day in 2017 to $1.1 million/day now, and just a couple of weeks ago, there was a story that the number of kids living in cars had risen by 350% since Labour took office.

People like Haworth, and the Labour Party themselves, need to own this problem. If they can’t achieve change in five years, why would we want to give them another three?

I have never been a fan of Roy Morgan polls but yesterday’s results do confirm something of great concern. It is apparent in all recent polls.

There is a slow but obvious trend away from Labour. Most of it is toward National but not all by a long chalk. Trends are really the only value of polling. There is confusion among those wanting to leave Labour.

More importantly the polls show a strong, welded on support for Jacinda and Labour. For a government that is so incompetent and so unable to deliver 35% support is something of a miracle. It ought to focus minds acutely.

I suggest it shows:
a. Feelings are more important than facts these days. No amount of logic and hard evidence will shake those who believe Jacinda is kind and saved them.
b. The education system and the media have done a much better job at brainwashing the younger generation than some of us realised.
c. Older white pollies like Luxon, Willis, even Seymour do not know how to talk to younger voters. They are not listening anyway.
d. As an oldie myself I fall into the trap of thinking policies win elections. They may have 30 – 50 years ago. It is something else – X or Y factors these days.
e. It may well be a very close election once again determined by a minor party.

I certainly do not have the answers. National must make better progress in middle NZ. That will offend a bunch of us here on KB. Robertson will be cramming lollies into a bag ready for the election campaign and that will become a big factor. Rural NZ needs to get its act together and figure out how to get best bangs for its buck. It screwed up last election. What else??

  If you look at the demographic breakdowns from the last couple polls, its not much to do with age. Labour support base is age 50+ females, greens are 18-49 females. Nats and ACT dont have particularly big differences by age in males.
  
  The divide is much stronger across gender than across age group.

  Looking at the demographics for that poll I suspect an awful lot of the young women who are “welded on” to Labour are not actual voters who’ll make the effort to go to the polls on the day .
  
  Another factor is I suspect their support is for the Ardern phenomenon ( pure imagery) rather than Labour as such . AS you say how the hell anyone in their right mind could support this bunch of un performing muppets is beyond rationality.
  
  Without Ardern I think they’d be back to 25 % . What does that say about the 10 % who support the Empty Dress .

  Where I work many of them are left leaning (men and women).
  
  The interesting thing is, and particularly the women, they have lost faith in both Labour and Jacinda (because Labour isn’t delivering, the cost of living is getting worse and they can now see through Jacinda’s spin pretending all is well etc).
  
  The other interesting thing is, they seem to be a bit lost at the moment (as in “who should we now vote for? As won’t vote Labour again” etc), but are stating to notice National and ACT’s messaging (on the economy, crime, not promoting people solely on race etc).
  
  So I guess these people are a representation of the fickle middle ground and National (and ACT) need to continue to appear “reasonable” (and emphasise the issues that matter to the middle, and hopefully they will be won over during 2023 as Labour’s incompetence and messes get bigger, more noticeable and more frustrating!
  
  Remember these people aren’t “belt-way tragics” like us, they only follow politics at a superficial level.
  
  But they see Labour wasting money and throwing it around to special interest groups and projects, all whilst these people contend with increasing costs to support themselves and their own families.
  
  If Bob Jones is correct, Labour will be routed and it will be of their own doing.

Does Bishop still advocate door to door vaccinations? Do National want to hold on to lockdowns and masking “just in case”?
A few staunch National supporters keep trying to tell us they are opposed to “something” and we have to give them our support to get rid of Ardern.
I’m not hearing that message. Bishop is refusing to answer emails. The Greens are refusing to answer emails.

I don’t know where the National Party stands on all of this. I’ve been to their website, I’ve read their policy section. I can see nothing regarding their position on covid, vaccines, masks, lockdowns etc.

What is the National Party position?

  Therefore the DOJ/FBI can’t use anything seized in the MAL raid to develop any case/s against Trump or his associates until the Special Master is done and issues his/her final report.
  
  If the goal was to charge Trump before the midterms, they’re stuck now. They can’t make a move using any of the stuff they grabbed during the MAL raid until the Special Master’s investigation has concluded.

I mean, of course you do but he has made it far worse for himself and essentially admitted that he had the documents (by trying to make it about them being on the floor as opposed to in a box). He continues to be his own worst enemy and has been given a small reprieve by a judge he appointed despite her lack of experience or credentials.
      
      The judge basically made the argument for his legal team based off the silly notion that there’s executive privilege at play (there is not). It may well be appealed pretty quickly.
      
      This will indeed delay the investigation but achieve nothing more than that. Trump is still walking towards an indictment for what is the largest theft of classified material in the last decade.
      
      Remember, Reality Winner stole one (1) document and was jailed immediately then sentenced to four years in prison.

        The photo with the documents on the floor is standard search procedure. No one is suggesting Trump left them on the floor like that.
        
        The FBI laid them out on the floor to photograph them as proof that this is what they found. You’ll see in that photo there’s a card with “2A” on it. That is a reference to item 2A on the search inventory.
        
        I suspect the reason for photographing the documents on the floor is that Trump’s office has distinctive carpet, so that is to show that is the location where those particular documents were found.
        
        Note that the FBI agents would have been wearing body-cams that would have been recording the whole time they were onsite. Those recordings would be part of the discovery info if/when any charges are laid. So the “the FBI planted the documents” argument is a dog that won’t hunt.

  The Judge’s ruling is so bad that it will almost certainly be overturned on appeal. The DoJ will either seek a re-statement or will appeal it.
  
  For those of you who are a bit puzzled by the legal principles here … imagine someone steals your car. The cops get it back, but the thief sues to keep it because “finders keepers”. So then a judge appoints a person to inspect the car for the thief’s belongings because if he left anything it’s his.
  
  Either way (whether there’s a Special Master or not) it won’t change the outcome. The Special Master is just there to evaluate whether any of Trump’s private documents (say, medical records) are mixed up in the documents recovered in the search. Any private documents wouldn’t figure in an indictment anyway. This is just a “litigate to delay” play.

The gifted name for the new railway station at Aotea Square is Te Wai Horotiu. I associate Horotiu with the meatworks outside Hamilton. Most New Zealanders probably do.
On the basis that the word has some meaning, I used google translate. Horotiu translates as condom, Te Wai Horotiu means sterile water.
Submissions are currently being accepted on these “proposed” names. I wonder if it’s worth pointing out that naming a station something that translates as condom might not be the best idea.

    Mcos. The Dunedin Early Settlers Museum was named that because the actual early settlers formed an association, built it, paid for it an ran it.
    It was their base where they kept their records of who came on what ship etc. Quite a big outfit. With all the usual museum relics all the walls were covered with photographs of the old people who came on the great adventure.
    Renaming it a maori name was an aggressive obliteration of their settler culture and history. Disgusting in my view.

Don Brash points out –

… The appointment of the directors who will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the entities is a convoluted process but it is explicitly provided in the legislation that the committees selecting the boards must have “knowledge of, and experience and expertise in relation to… the principles of te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi; and perspectives of mana whenua, matauranga, tikanga and te ao Maori”. Added to this control of the boards of the four entities, only tribal groups will be entitled to issue so-called Te Mana o Te Wai statements to give those tribal groups effective control of any body of water in their territory. And to put the matter beyond any doubt, the Minister of Local Government, Nanaia Mahuta, has appointed her sister Tipa (who is already the co-chairman of the Maori Health Authority) as chair of the Maori Advisory Group which controls the water regulator Taumata Arowai.

However, IMHO, Don Brash fails to emphasise this last point, just above, and describe how Tipa Mahuta and the Maori Advisory Group control the water regulator Taumata Arowai which will control the directors who will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the entities.

Does Don Brash actually realise that?

Does anyone commenting on “3 Waters” actually realise that?

And do they realise “Tipa Mahuta, as chair of the Maori Advisory Group which controls the water regulator Taumata Arowai”, have been established in their place since mid-November last year?

Why have a “national conversation of co-governance”, when Chieftainship already exists?

Nothing to fear from new poll, Labour are still intent on divisive policies, long term interest rates are still rising so more pain in the back pocket on it’s way.
Last week’s news of failure, blundering and dishonesty plain for all to see. “Things can only get better from here”, that is unless they continue to get worse. Most important of all is that Labour have abandoned the middle ground, it’s the swinging voter who thinks carefully about the issues and does not get sucked in by Jacinda visiting yet another kindy. The real Labour arrogance and idealism are now clearly on display, and it is a vote loser where it counts, ie in the middle.

It was only a matter of time before this happened:

New Zealand’s newly renamed health authority has been ordered to remove misleading multi-media advertisements about vaccinations against Covid-19.

The Advertising Standards Authority received 44 complaints on Te Whatu Ora/Health New Zealand advertisements which appeared across a range of media.

It included the text “Protect them for life. Immunise. COVID-19 vaccinations available for tamariki now”.

The Board said the advertisement was misleading because it implied if you vaccinate your child against COVID-19, this could protect them for life, meaning for the rest of their life.

The print advertisement shows four images of children interacting with parents/caregivers, a child being vaccinated, a father and child walking on the beach, a father and daughter doing a high five, and a mother giving a thumbs up to her son.

The advertisement includes the New Zealand Government and Ministry of Health logos.

Complainants said there is no “life-long” protection from a COVID-19 vaccine, as implied by the advertisement.
