Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister was conspicuous by her absence from the media yesterday after the Government backdown over Kiwi Saver, all we heard was we were trying to fix a problem on the tax of the Super Scheme.Where was the media when the Prime Minister is trying to hide from the stupidity of her Party’s Tax grab.

  2) We thought smaller KS providors would be in favour
  3) After announcing even the smaller KS schemes turned out to be against the change.
  
  Is it just me or if one did extensive consultation one would (at least) talk to KS providors. Yet here we are surpised that the were against. Lying about the consultation are we? I guess thats par for the course with these muppets.

      Thought I heard that IRD did NOT support the GST move, but they take no notice of any professionals that do not meet with their ideology.
      They though that this could be tucked quietly underneath a number of changes so nobody would notice.

Newshub understands the Prime Minister read the tea leaves pretty quickly on Wednesday morning and got on the phone to tell ministers to tell them to ditch it, hoping there’ll at least be some credit for the swift slaughter of a bad idea.

So now where is the “co-governance conversation” – after being saved from the KiwiSaver Tax, they should get on to “co-governance” next!
Where is the definitive plan, the ēlite Maori response watered-down by Willie Jackson, further refined by Cabinet and simplified and sloganised by Jacinda, to start the “conversation” on “co-governance”?

The Maori elite had their targeted six months consultation, so where is the rest of the nation’s, non-Maori six month turn? Or can it be collapsed to 24 hours?

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed that public consultation on co-governance with Māori will begin later in 2022. [1]

But – “We think the furore around this was denting public confidence in KiwiSaver,” said Parker.
When “co-governance” is defined – and it will have to mean a departure from one person one vote – it will not dent confidence in an external entity, like KiwiSaver, but Government itself?

This time – Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said they listened to providers.
“We’ve heard very clearly from them they didn’t think that’s what it would achieve and so, simple, we won’t change it.”

And previously – While I have believed in a CGT, it’s clear many New Zealanders do not. That is why I am also ruling out a capital gains tax under my leadership in the future.”

Hide “co-governance” in the run-up to Christmas / New Year, Jacinda, or give us something else to grill over the BBQ

■ There is no “credit for the swift slaughter of a bad idea”
Ardern’s Labour Government must have believed in KiwiSaver GST, and Capital Gains Tax – they tried to introduce both, after all!
Then on public response swept them away.
So what they believe in, as “best for the country”, is obviously superseded by the greater belief: what is best for Labour – for its survival. No surprise there. And certainly no credit.

    Maybe i’m a touch more cynical MM but perhaps we’ve just been conned by a nice little piece of political theatre!
    – Tuesday arvo tax remedial Bill introduced with a technical tax correction buried in it, conveniently it happened to give the government a lot more tax over time.
    – early Wednesday morning a “normally silent on such things” MSM’s all over it with analyses of the FMA’s modelling, Treasury impact paper conclusions,etc – poor journo’s must have beavered all night digging that all up.
    – couple of hours later the PM/revenue Minister to the rescue with a “this will not happen” – minimal waffle denials, backlash not expected, etc
    – by night fall TV’s leading news item screams “gov’t does u turn” with suitable street interviews showing ” people saying the gov’ts listening to us ” – the gov’ts a hero.
    
    Yeah – maybe i’m just a cynic for thinking this appears to be just too convenient for the PM’s /Govt’s caring image…..

      WHat is remarkable here is that when you fiddle with long-term policies like Kiwisaver, pensions etc, they really cannot be addressed with short-term policies (let alone 24-hour U-turn cycles).
      
      Long term policies need to involve all parties because there will be many changes of government that need to ensure they work properly.
      
      Tampering with KiwiSaver in the way that they have is a very dumb idea.

        Have a look into the recent past when the Nat govt made some fairly serious trims in Kiwisaver.
        
        I think the last one (taxing the employer contribution) would have generated a humungous number if the compounded effect was modelled over a 50 year period.
        
        Ditto for removal of the $1000 signup and halving the tax credit …
        
        GST on the fees would have cost something like 15% (the GST rate) of 0.5% (typical level of fees I believe) = about 0.1% of the Kiwisaver deposits. Taxing the employer contribution would be something like 30% of half the total input. About 15% of what the untaxed deposit would have been.
        
        I don’t recall much fuss about any of this when it happpened. Go figure. Just saying ….

      The day after she was appointed leader after the Little belittling , it was a Reserve bank interest rate meeting day . One of the Media Pack asked her what she thort .
      
      She didn’t know it was on . Now had that been a right leaning party leader the Media would have crucified them , but she got a pass from then .
      
      Two things from such a little incident ;
      
      she has never been on top of the big picture and the media party have always been heavily biased.
      
      Another example ;
      
      she was ambush asked to state the three articles , and she couldn’t . Wily Wee Willy had to prompt her .
      
      Not a bigly ,but for the fact her regime has placed so much capital in same.
      
      She’s a facade , intellectually . That’s not to say she’s not a dangerous radical with a far left agenda ,cos that’s what she is , comrades .

  Someone from the powerful savings industry, probably banks came up with the headline $105 billion tax grab. It was clever work. Labo dropped the tax quickly as they didnt want to proles to dwell too much on the crushing burden the general tax system is on the hard working.
  
  105 billion on a chicken shit GST bill on finance fees. Run the numbers on a general drop in GST 15% down to 10% and that is significant boost for the savings of the hard working.

    I don’t think it was the “$105 billion tax grab” that scared them away from the policy. I think it was the invocation of Michael Cullen’s name and that they were undermining his creation. It’s relatively easy to bat away attacks from the opposition, but even Jacinda’s most ardent media water-carriers won’t take her side over the recently deified Sir Michael.

  As with all Governments but more so the Left its all about the votes. Nothing else. Labours internal polling must be dire. So do they U turn on 3 Waters and co-governance. How much control does the Maori caucus have. I hope they dont U turn as they will spin/lie that they have listened to the people and some citizens will revert to support them maybe enough to get them across the line next year.
  Its going to be a tight race. Every vote will count.
  BTW Bolt had Winston on Sky News last night. Watcing the old bastard and what he said almost had me supporting him. He knows the hot buttons to press and when to press them. I dont write him off getting NZF back. The question is who will they support.
  On that note why dont we have the German style where the top polling party gets to decide who it goes with not the other way round. What we have is the tail wagging the dog. That for me is not democracy its the tyranny of the minority over the majority.

  Not really rouppe. As the first sentence points out, this proposal “helps to counterbalance existing exemptions for car parks.”
  
  The reality is that many NZ businesses are located in places where public transport isn’t an option for their staff, so they have to provide car parking. At present, they don’t have to pay FBT on this (Labour did try to bring that in, and it got shot down).
  
  But some businesses are located in places where public transport (PT) is good and providing monthly PT passes to staff would make sense. Right now, any business doing that has to pay FBT on the perk. The proposal is to remove that FBT. It should be done.

    My life experience is that the more rules you add to something, the more likely it is that the basic premise is wrong.
    
    No one has to provide parking. Those places where there is no decent pubic transport also likely don’t have parking fees. Most businesses do not have to buy parking for any of their employees, not even the CEO. Their (taxable) remuneration should be set so they can buy their own.

      I agree simplicity is usually best, especially when it comes to rules and regulations.
      
      But while there may be no legal requirement to provide parking, if your staff have no other way to get to and from work, it is a practical requirement. For example, the company I work for is in an industrial suburb and leases carparks as part of its building lease (the landlord charges an amount per park).
      
      Pretty much every business around us also provides onsite parking for their staff – there are few on-street carparks in the area, public transport doesn’t provide adequate service and there are no parking buildings either. There is no practical way for employees to buy their own parking. This situation is probably typical for most suburban and rural employers. That’s a substantial number of businesses across New Zealand.

    I’m sceptical. She would only be satisfied with a senior role paying serious money. She is simply not equipped to undertake such a role.
    
    She is more likely to embark on a “speaking circuit” charging a hefty fee for after dinner speeches on kindness and poverdy. She can probably stretch that out for a couple of years until people tire of her.
    
    But as for a “job” running a large international programme as Helen Clark undertook, it is never going to happen.

      I agree that Cindy is nowhere near competent at anything except maybe knowing the right amount of salt to shake on a scoop of chips.
      
      Do they really look for competence from Cindy, or just a puppet to bounce around on the end of a string?
      
      I really struggle to see Cindy pulling in the punters on the speaking circuit. She is far from being a rousing speaker. The dodgy “speaking circuit” gig like Bill Clinton did as a bag man for Hillary is not really an option available to her.

        The worst part is that once opportunity runs out at the UN or similar, and opportunity runs out on the speaking circuit, she will come back and run for local government, and set about ruining Auckland or some other city.
        
        Helen Clark came back at retirement age, with a sweet parliamentary pension, possibly UN pension and National Super.

      Ms Ardern could easily be offered a UN ambassador style role. Deployable to selected world crisis situations to be the empathetic, relatable face of the UN, and hand over the money. She would be good at that, get high media attention. The UN will be well aware.

      I agree with Benedict, at least in part. I know it is a meme here that she will get a UN job. However, such jobs are distributed on a pretty tight quota.
      
      Helen Clark probably used up New Zealand’s quota for the next 20 years, especially since her role was almost at the op of the UN tree.
      Yes, ex PM’s from small countries often get UN jobs, typically heading the Human Rights Commission, UNESCO or the like. Unlike Benedict, I am of the view that the PM would fit into some of these roles (which would be sufficiently senior) quite comfortably. But there are many well regarded small countries with lots of ex PM’s. Only a small percentage ever get such jobs.

  I totally agree. I went to Singapore many times when it was an Asian Cesspit. Now, it’s not, and its transition to one of the most prosperous independent countries in Asia in such a short period of time is a credit to Lee Kuan Yew their Prime Minister from 1959 to 1990. Yes, there were hangings and floggings etc but that’s what was needed to turn the country around.
  IMO, that sort of PM is what’s needed here but so far, I don’t see one on the horizon now or in the future.

He has previously complained to Kāinga Ora about one neighbour, who he says has made racist comments, but says he did not see any action taken by the government social housing agency.

Labours utter incompetence and the frustration in the community with their poor governing has led to renewed interest in small parties and starting even more of them.

What those on the centre right who leap to start such initiatives need to get a handle on is that they take votes off the right and of every two votes they gain one goes to the left.

The madness of MMP is that parties failing to gain the threshold of 5% of the party vote or gain an electorate seat have the votes they do get effectively divided between the parties who do clear the threshold. With the four or five small parties of the centre right lining up for the next election at least 7% to 10% of all votes cast by centre right voters could end up helping the left.

In the electorate much the same except for the 5%. Choose the candidate close to your views who has a chance of winning. Don’t vote National party, Labour electorate because s/he’s nice!     They do need to plan for adaptation over the next 40 years but there is a lot of time and it will not be ad bad as you think.
    
    As for “equitable solutions” I don’t get it. They need to provide the infrastructure that people want at modelled carbon prices. And in most New Zealand cities, private motor vehicles will continue to dominate. As cars become more fuel efficient and we switch to hybrids and EVs, high carbon prices will not drive a big switch to PT and cycling. Never going to happen. Cycling has a commuting mode share of about 2 percent. In 1980 it was 4 percent. Let’s say it gets back to 4 percent by 2030. You think that will save the world.
    
    Councils have the entire “emissions problem” arse about. They are trying to bully/bribe people into doing what they think is required to fix climate change. It is like trying to level a mountain by pushing a piece of string up it.

      People seem to forget that NZ contributes about 0.6% of global greenhouse gas emissions. We could eliminate every living thing in this country and – because of volcanic and geothermal activity – reduce global emissions by maybe 0.1 or 0.2%
      
      Clearly a waste of resources.
      
      Stop building on flood plains. Increase sewage and storm water capacity. Go hard on any cross-pipe infractions. Improve water quality and drinking water capacity

  For the first time this I’ve focused on the mayoral candidates, so watched that debate. Collins definitely stated that it was is number one issue, the others went along in that it needed to be considered as an issue, but I think in today’s political climate they can’t afford to completely ignore it. They had different answers, and different approaches. Lord clearly stated the 2030 and 2050 targets were not achievable. I think it’s more how Stuff chose to frame the debate, rather than all candidates believing it was the main issue

And voters, in a working democracy, have the right to question and disagree with those policies.

So Sean Plunket this morning got confirmation from Immigration NZ that they did liase with Interpol over information on Avi Yemini. Which makes the leaked email reported by theBFD seem quite credible now.

Which means we now exist in a country where, at the very least, the civil service is now vetting your politics for entry into the country. At the worst we have had directives from parliament to refuse people on purely political grounds.

Not sure which alternative I find more disturbing.

  My advice to prospective tourists (and I do get asked) would be to avoid Rotorua. If they really want to visit, I would say visit Mount Tarawera. It is quite an experience IMO. Then I would tell them to arrive at Rotorua Airport early in the morning. Get picked up to do the tour. Back to the airport to fly out in the evening.
  
  Alternatively find some nice place to stay well out of town that is fully catered with transfers to the airport. Under no circumstances stay in the city itself.

However, when you read the article, there is no context. There are about 800,000 school kids in New Zealand. The article says there have been 360 deaths since 2019, so about 100 per year. Is that a lot? Has it been increasing? How does it compare internationally? No idea.

Just this:

“Secondary Principals’ Council chairperson Kate Gainsford said these were “startling figures”, with their prevalence underscoring the need for schools to get their responses to traumatic events right to prevent further harm.”

Really? Nothing in the article to suggest that it is “startling”. The death rate is about 0.01 percent annually.

What I did discover – which would have been useful context in the story, is that New Zealand has the highest mortality rates for young people in the OECD. The journalist could have explored the causes of New Zealand’s high death rate of young people (suicide, violence, car accidents).

Instead, we get a “hautū” in the Ministry of Education worrying about the kids posting to Facebook that another kid has killed himself.

BTW my guess is that said “hautū” is payed somewhere north of $400K annually.

Government disconnect # 4…

Road to zero… Brendan Bisley of Tauranga council who pretends to be a traffic expert, just sent me a letter that they are removing right hand turns from side streets onto main roads in my area….citing road to zero as the reason.

This is hugely inconvenient, there has never been an accident at the right hand turn near me… yet, they’re going to block them.

Brendan Bisley is the same turkey who thinks it is a good idea to turn main streets into cul-de-sacs.

People be afraid if Brendan Bisley gets a job at your local council. He is a menace to city traffic.

More room for rivers: NZ Farmers Weekly.
Some riverbeds could be widened as part of the overhaul of flood protection.
Councils are spending about $200 million a year maintaining and building new defences, but with peri-urban expansion and aging infrastructure, more investment is needed.
Basically the problem is not really too much water but it’s too much gravel.
Our iconic braided rivers are unique in the world and an integral part of the Canterbury landscape.
Some rivers have been strangled by flood protection works and will not deal with frequent heavy rain events.
Schemes designed to protect farmland are now required to provide protection for peri-urban development, such as those adjacent to the Ashley, Waimakariri and Selwyn rivers.

  There are slowly moving waves of gravel creating high spots vulnerable to flooding in braided rivers, historically councils would require any gravel supplies to be taken from those high spots to diminish that risk, but I understand modern green idiocy ended that practice for usual insane reasons (ie you must not touch anything in the river, it’s unnatural!!)

  Those braided rivers used to wander round wherever they pleased once upon a time.
  About fifty+ years ago when I worked for the MOW in Timaru we did a quick survey of the road between Hinds and Ashburton, which is fairly typical across the plains and there was a variation in height above sea level of about a foot.
  A while back the Waimakariri River was known to flow the other side of Christchurch.

Co-governance undermines the purpose of Acts of Parliament legislation and the purpose of the Acts Powers and Authorities for a Democratic Society by handing those Powers and Authorities to unelected groups of people. By doing so it circumvents any scrutiny by the public and any interested parties.
For example, Making decisions in a closed meeting becomes the norm, councils do that more and more these days. Or, appointing people or groups or organisations to do certain work(s) or projects without a proper budget or the allocation of those financial resources that have not been budgeted for.

The Hauraki Gulf Forum is a perfect example of this co governance bs.

A quazi board of six or seven councillors and the same number of Maori reps who are unelected. Who are in disagreement over the real purpose and function of the HGF? But, the co-leadership of Pippa Coom and a token Maori wahine are wanting to claim a mandate for the people of Auckland by getting Wellington, the Government to acknowledge them as a representative body for the Hauraki Gulf, Tikapa and 20 Coastal Regional Parks and Reserves that they are currently trying to steal off the ratepayers of Auckland by including those Parks and Reserves in the ‘scope’ or coverage and control by creating new Legislation for a new Hauraki Gulf Marine Act that also hands to them the Powers and Authorities for, Wildlife, Marine Traffic/Transport, Parks and Reserves Act, and other Act(s) carve-outs.
By doing this, they, a co-governance body will be able to control everything from on land, sea, and air, over and under the Hauraki Gulf and Tikapa/Firth of Thames.

And who orchestrated, and designed this coup detat of the Hauraki Gulf you may wonder?

A little guy whose full-time job for Auckland Councils eke Panuku, Paul Majurey! Yup! Him again. You know, the one I’ve been telling you all about for a while. The guy with many side hustles. Iwi treaty settlements, development gigs with a company called Ockham and lots of high court action for disputed land claims and with other developers, iwi and from Matakana in the north to Matakana in the south, with Tauranga iwi. If you control all the habours from Auckland meaning the Port(s) of Auckland, Manukau, Firth of Thames and Tauranga as well as the assets of 12 Hauraki iwi too from Mai Matakana ki Matakana and then have influence of a co-governance board for all of the Hauraki, BINGO!

The little ‘napoleon’ from Thames can crown himself the King of Tamaki Makaurau and the Hauraki and the little village of Thames.
Within three Treaty Settlements, the Pare Hauraki, Marutuaha and 12 individual Settlements, Majurey has scored big time! Assets and finances of all those iwi amount to a billion or two at a conservative estimate.

So, this is just one example of how one guy can play the game better than most people can imagine.

With Majurey holding so many roles that are in conflict with most of the agenda items and matters that comes before the board, he spends most of his time out of the room when board meetings are held because of the conflicts of the many interests he has. It’s probably not worth having him as chairman or even involved with eke Panuku because of all of his conflicting interests??

Furniture store IKEA’s parent company Ingka Investments is continuing to buy land to plant trees with its latest purchase, the Huiarua and Matanui Stations in the Gisborne region with a combined area of just over 6000 hectares.

  My armchair “definitely not an expert” thoughts on this are that the buyers are taking advantage of carbon credits and converting productive land into non-productive land. I don’t know if trees will ever end up being more productive than dairy after accounting for carbon credits, but I would think not.

  It’s terrible for NZ. These Green indulgences take productive land that creates jobs and export earnings, and render it fallow, even dangerous with the added fire risk of the pinus radiata monoculture. They are growing trees that will never be pruned, and will, in the end, be effectively worthless. And unless they are bulldozed into landfill once grown they are not actually doing anything useful to reduce atmospheric CO2.

      they are radiata, they are shit trees no mater what you do to them. Its also worth noting the the breeders have done a reasonable job over the last 60 years to breed trees that dont perform that much better with punning and the costs of doing so are higher, if companies can even get the labour to do it, and those costs have to be carried for at least another 15 years, even at a really low discount rate of like 3% thats still a lot of premium that has to be expected to be paid for the higher grade at end of life.

MOH are distancing themselves from young Dunedin man’s death by claiming they updated vaccinators in August via a letter.

*Rory Nairn, 26, received the vax on Nov 5, died at home on November 17 after receiving his first dose of the Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine.

My question is on the weekend when the general public over 50 were eligible for vaccines our household received an MOH flyer. Did this flyer go out to every household in NZ? Mass vaccination events were happening in July, so i believe it must have been the July version of the leaflet which went to every household in the country . The July version doesn’t contain any serious adverse events. They say it’s safe and effective. They add myocarditis as a risk to the flyer in a mid August version, but how many of the August version were printed and how many households was it sent to.

“Safety
Medsafe only grants consent for a vaccine to be
used in New Zealand once they are satisfied it’s
safe and effective enough to use. All COVID-19
vaccines will go through the same safety test and

(( They never say it is only “provisionally approved” by medsafe.))

“Potential side effects
Like all medicines, the vaccine may cause side
effects in some people. These are common, are
usually mild and don’t last long and won’t stop
you from having the second dose or going about
your daily life.
The most common reported reactions are pain at
the injection site, a headache and feeling tired or
fatigued.
Muscle aches, feeling generally unwell, chills,
fever, joint pain and nausea may also occur. This
shows that the vaccine is working. These are more

((They only mention allergic reactions as a serious risk. No serious adverse risks (myocarditis, stroke, heart attack, neurological, death are given))

The booklet entitled “Everything you need to Know” is even worse.

I note that the UN has brought out a report claiming China badly mistreats its Uighur people.
No great surprise to many people.
Will NZ do anything about it?
A lot of people would like us to roundly condemn their behaviour and haul the ambassador in for a severe dressing down.
By coincidence the Groundswell crowd are clogging up the Auckland motorways reminding everyone that the agrarian sector is abysmally treated by Wellington and don’t forget the wealth of the country is dependent on the farmers who brave the elements every day to send dairy products to China.
I’m not expecting anything more than a tepid response from any administration here so long as so much depends on our continuing trade with that totalitarian dictatorship.

Cripes, according some Newshub article, a guy from Milford Asset Management thinks that the energy crisis in Europe is all down to the situation with Ukraine.
Nothing at all to do with idiotic energy policies like Germany shutting down nuclear and coal-fired power stations and leaving itself vulnerable to the Russians in the first place?
I might have to rethink my investments with them.

Recently, Jessica Rose published a very long, but very important Substack article, “Is the spike protein acting as a prion with regard to hemoglobin molecules? And is porphyria being induced?”

The short answer is yes, it appears so, according to everything we know.

Here’s a key paragraph from that article:

So the bottom line of all of this information is this: the virus infects the RBCs using spike protein via the CD147 receptor on red blood cells which causes hemolysis (rupture of the red blood cell). This causes the release of massive amounts of hemoglobin. Then the spike protein, due to its amyloidogenic peptides, triggers mis-folding of the hemoglobin into amyloid fibrils causing subsequent blood clots. The blood clots would be enhanced due to antibodies (Ag:Ab complexes).

These “rubbery” blood clots that are being pulled out of cadavers on a regular basis.

Watch this short video of John O’Looney explaining how these clots cause people to die.

What is remarkable is the medical examiner is completely missing this in their determination of the cause of death (which they leave unexplained). The embalmers find these clots. Most of them say nothing because they don’t want to lose business.

The “clots” featured in these videos are not blood at all; they are primarily amyloid proteins (thanks to analysis done by Mike Adams of clots supplied by Richard Hirschman).

Interesting chat over a cheap Sauvignon Blanc with a 35 year old solo mother.
Last election there was a referendum on cannabis and people queued up to vote for it, and while they were there they voted for Cindy.
That Kiwisaver foul up was the last straw; Cindy is history.
I was surprised to hear of the huge support for Act, even from females in the 18 – 39 age bracket. I hope Seymour doesn’t stuff things up between now and the election.
The give with the left and take with the right is the way the Cost of Living $116.67 is viewed. Extra payouts to beneficiaries irritate hard working solo mothers. The ram raids also feature as a worry.
But those who voted for cannabis, and Labour sort of by default, may not bother to vote in 2023.

Just had some of the best whitebait fritters EVER!
To think those tiny delicacies were only swimming up river this morning…. and straight onto our pan tonite!
Made the with egg white, pinch of BP, then quikly fried in brown butter. Served on fresh white bread lightly spread with Lurpak, a sprinkle of s&p, and a squeeze of lemon. HEAVEN!!
My partner insists on poring Mint Sauce on his, just like his mum does.
There’s nothing better in the world than our SI whitebait 😛

I remember last year we couldn’t get hold of any because of lockdown or something. I made the mistake of buying some that had been imported from Chy-Nah. When I thawed them out, they were sooo slimy and yellow with little slitty eyes, so I snuck over and disposed of the whole lot in the neighbors bin.
