Quad-vaxxed, double masking, Paxlovid chopping, multi-Covid sufferer and CCP-style lockdown architect throws in the towel. Yes, Dr Anthony S. Fauci, the consummate health hobbit has announced he’s quitting. This from a few hours ago:

I am announcing today that I will be stepping down from the positions of Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation, as well as the position of Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden. I will be leaving these positions in December of this year to pursue the next chapter of my career.

My hope is that some part of the ‘next chapter’ involves him being held to account for his lying to congress, and for his lying to the senate, and for his lying to the public, and for his continuous shilling for his Big Pharma paymasters which started decades ago when he disastrously prevented inexpensive treatments for AIDS and focused exclusively on AZT – a failed chemotherapy drug which was later discontinued due to extreme toxicity and deadly side effects. That was Fauci’s Covid-19 vaxx trial run.

This is a particularly good read on Fauci joining an increasingly long line of senior lockdown and vaxx aficionados heading anxiously for the door: Why are the Top Vaccine Officials Suddenly Quitting?

The safest places for Fauci now would be federal prison, or panic-room equipped villa in some non-extradition treaty country. He could write his undoubtedly self-aggrandizing memoirs from there, while only occasionally needing to look over his shoulder.

      I’m guessing late eighties or early nineties. It would have been after AIDS had hit the headlines. Fauci had some dark deadlines around that also. Suffererers couldn’t get effective off market treatments. No money in those. Instead they had to go on big pharma, hugely expensive concoctions.
      There’s a great movie that covers the topic very well called the Dallas Buyers Club. Highly recommended.

  AZT didn’t have particular “extreme toxicity and deadly side effects” – it wasn’t effective on its own on account of rapid development of resistance – RNA virus – no proof reading mechanism, etc. Was used in combination for years before more effective drugs became available. That is how drug development tends to go. I don’t like Fauci but I think this kind of almost hysteria doesn’t help things. All drugs have side effects – some more than others. All potentially deadly – penicillin for example can be deadly.

  Mask-wearing has two different functions: protect the wearer and protect others. Therefore the grade of mask varies, and in the context of public health availability and risk.

What a bunch of hypocrites the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern her Welfare Minister Carmel Sepuloni and Labour MP’s are.
This after Labour went ape shit at National Leader Chris Luxon after he had said while announcing some of there Welfare policy to the same beneficiaries on the jobseeker benefit, you might have a free ride under Labour but under National it ends.
Now it has been released that Labour have cut the benefit for around 4,000 sick injured or disabled job seekers in the last 5 years because the wern’t preparing for work fast enough. This after the Government replied it shows how out of touch National and Chris Luxon are with Labours Nelson MP Rachel Boyack sending a message which was liked by multiple Labour MP’s ” just let’s be very, very clear people who are unwell or have disabilities and are not able to work or are having difficulties finding work shouldn’t be sanctioned”.

      Meanwhile, she was at the Turangawaewae Marae pushing her Co-Governance rort while Nelson flooded, the Far North became isolated due to flooding, and the Dr. Sharma fiasco was turning into a major disaster for the Labour Govt due to managerial neglect, lies, and innuendos.

Yesterday Jacinda was lamenting that the Nelson flood was caused by climate change.

The rainfall this winter has been extremely high. However, these outlier events have happened before. The following link shows a very helpful NIWA chart showing winter rainfall in Nelson since the 1940s.

This shows a clear pattern. There are wet winters and dry winters. There are three extremely wet winters. These are 1970, 1998 and 2022. But critically the data shows no TREND for higher rainfall in winter in Nelson.

There may be data that shows that the intensity of rainfall in Nelson is increasing. I have not looked.

The PM has not provided any evidence that over the next 20 years Nelson will be subject to higher rainfall. It is more likely that rainfall in winter will revert to the pattern in the NIWA chart. Dry winters and wet winters.

    The water vapour is one thing. The other is all the dust etc fired up into the atmosphere.
    
    Raindrops need to form around a nucleus, typically a dust particle. More dust = more rain.

      Its called La Nina.
      Nothing more . Nothing less and highly predictable as per posts years ago.

  The Maitai has a history of flooding .Basically since the settlers built houses /infrastructure on the little flat land available ( created by flooding ) right on on estuary , and that flat land would have been a swamp until improved by drainage and stop banks.
  
  As you point out 50 years ago almost to the day the news reports “Nelson devasted by floods”

    Readers may recall the ‘millenial drought’ in Australia. This was very severe and ran from about 1998 to 2011.

    This was attributed to climate change, with many commentators saying that Sydney’s water storage dams would never fill again. The NSW Government spent about a billion dollars on a desalination plant (which was probably prudent). Then in 2011 the drought broke.
    
    The last two years has seen well above average rainfall in NSW. The first 6 months of 2022 is the highest rainfall recorded in Sydney since records began 164 years ago.

    Back in the late 1950’s I recall the Maitai river running as high as it did last week (up to the underside of the Hardy street footbridge). The harmful effects of heavy rainfall in Nelson and particularly in the Rai valley are largely the result of land clearing and forestry activities in the upper river catchments. Land subsidence in the hills above Tahunanui Beach is not unknown. Clearing land, cutting into hillsides for roads and subdivision seem to be unwise activities in this region.

      Where is the Nelson City Council in all of this, permitting subdivision on known unstable ground. My grandparents owned 26 acres of land along Wakefield Quay, in the early 1900s and there was evidence of the unstable ground on the hills above Wakefield Quay and further round, to the cliffs above Rocks Rd, which was once the old Moncrief farm, which now is covered in residential housing and to no surprise, of some, is now experiencing issues with land movement. Questions need to be asked of the NCC?

  I remember crossing all the bridges several times in the 70s all these rivers were regularly flooded, the floods around Ashburton a while back they said one in 500 year event, only for a farmer still there saying it’s the worst he has seen since the 50s and also an event in the 70s

  For many regions they’re not sure if there will be more, or less, rain, let alone how much different.
  It does reference RCP8.5 a bit, which has pretty much been declared to be unlikely by anyone except politicians and MSM, so we can pretty much ignore any predictions based upon that.
  They do predict a bit more rain for Nelson, but that isn’t the same as attributing this recent heavy rainfall to CAGW.
  Something I’ve read multiple times from people who seem to know their stuff (e.g. Cliff Mass) now is that the more extreme a bit of weather is, the _less_ likely it is that ‘global warming’ caused it. ‘Global Warming’ _might_ make an event a little bit worse, but the event was likely to happen anyway.

  Nelson (and the West Coast and possibly other areas) are on track to break the most amount of rainfall on record. Even if Nelson had no rain from now until the end of the year it will still be close to the 90th percentile for rainfall in a year. This recent rain event broke the record for most amount of rain to fall in 3 days.
  
  You are possibly going to get more extremes with a warming planet as there is a greater capacity of the atmosphere to retain water – so when it does rain there is likely to be more of it (Dallas just had their average summer rainfall in one day).

    British Army too, and all through Africa: West, East and South West (pretty much everywhere except South Africa).
    
    Slavery was still rife in German colonies and Arabian-controlled regions into the 1900s (South West Africa – now Namibia – and German East Africa – now Rwanda and Tanzania). That was only sorted out when the Brits removed them in WW1.

    Joseph Auga Matamata, 66, was sentenced to 11 years last year by Justice Helen Cull in the High Court at Napier after being found guilty after a jury trial in March of 10 charges of trafficking people and 13 charges of dealing in slaves.”

        If slavery made Britain wealthy, how come it had to rely on merchants like the Rothschilds to finance its wars against the French, and others?
        
        The real wealth of Britain came from the Industrial Revolution, and this was built on brain power and scientific and engineering skill. The fact that sugar plantation owners contributed some capital was a minor factor grossly exaggerated to fit a Leftist world view.
        
        The Industrial Revolution that made Britain rich moved on to other countries, creating the power of Germany, for example, then of the United States. Industrialisation, or new industrial revolution, lifted hundreds of millions of Chinese out of poverty in the last 75 years . Earlier it did the same for Japan, and is now doing the same in new Asian “economic tigers”, such as Vietnam.
        
        Meanwhile, slavery is rampant today. The Woke and “decolonisation” ravers preferring to pick on the past of soft-target countries, rather than on the present of nations such as India, which has about 8 million slaves, according to this source:

      In actual fact, contrary to what London’s disaster of a mayor would have you believe, slaves and sugar accounted for maybe on 3% of the country’s wealth. This is about the same as the brewing industry.
      
      Yes, some individuals became fantastically rich, but what actually secured Britain’s wealth was a focus on trade where European competitors were simply grabbing for territory and being first out of the gate with industrialisation. Take a step further back and it was being the first to have a political climate with a rule of law to enable capitalism-like innovation, that made Britain first to industrialisation. We can thank Alfred the Great and the Vikings for that.

      Those earlier inhabitants of the Chatham Islands who were not eaten by marauding Taranaki Māori, were enslaved. This was after slavery was made illegal by the NZ Parliament. The conquering tribes were later rewarded with land and cash settlements approved by the Waitangi Tribunal.

    If not the Maori would still have been enslaving and eating each other as if there were no tomorrow. Rapidly diminishing food supplies, obvious to early European visitors, would have seen to that as the human body provides plenty of protein.

It’s also why they hate private education and fight tooth and nail to maintain the state’s monopoly over learning and teaching.       On the one hand temporary imported labour isn’t a bad form of foreign aid. The user country gets some economic return, and the recipient countries get a more dignified form of help.
      
      On the other hand, rising labour costs drive industrial progress.
      
      Robot picking is being pioneered in New Zealand by a German co-operative using Californian technology. The driver for such innovation is high labour cost, or lack of labour, but the result is higher productivity.
      
      Cheap imported labour takes the pressure off a drive for higher productivity, which ultimately provides competitive power in exports, and higher living standards.
      
      It also diverts capital into business reliant on cheap labour. Ultimately this business will be beaten out by competitors in countries with surging productivity from new technology made possible by the silicon revolution.

    Rinse and repeat even for professionals on work visas. They have restrictions who they can work for – probably not as onerous as fruit workers but still destructive (especially because it makes NZ a less attractive option for potential immigrants).
    
    Still, is this really slavery? All those fruit pickers have a choice to come to NZ or not and it must be a good deal for them or they would not come.

        There is a big difference between slavery as a tiny issue that’s explicitly illegal, as it is in the West and straight up sanctioned or ignored by Government.

      For someone living on less than $2 a day in shitholistan, getting a chance to travel to another country and earn even $20 a day and have their expenses met is an amazing opportunity.
      
      It is far too easy to lose perspective if you’ve never lived in the third world and interacted with the people properly and really understand what life is like on the other side.
      
      It is not our fault that they live in shitholistans. It is corruption and other problems.

There is some evidence of the experimental mRNA injectables downregulating the production of P53 thereby lowing the body’s defenses against cancers. I’m a couple of papers into this topic right now. Remember how the Left piled onto Christopher Luxon when he said on Newshub Nation a week ago that disabled beneficiaries could be eligible for sanctions? I wonder how they’ll react today:

The Labour Government has cut the benefits of around 4000 sick, injured of disabled jobseekers in the last five years because they weren’t preparing to return to work fast enough.

The Green Party’s social development spokesperson Ricardo Menéndez March says it is awful and is accusing the Government of actively targeting disabled New Zealanders with sanctions.

“It needs to immediately stop,” he told 1News.

The Green MP believes many Labour MPs don’t realise what their own Government is doing.

“We’re calling on Labour to stop focussing on attacking National MPs for their policy and to look at their own.”

In early August, National leader Christopher Luxon revealed the party’s ‘Welfare That Works’ policy designed to get young people off jobseeker benefits and into jobs.

“To young people who don’t want to work, you might have a free ride under Labour but under National it ends,” he told the party’s annual conference in Christchurch.

Young people who didn’t comply with the policy, such as being job coached, would face sanctions, including the roughly 35% of young people who are on jobseeker benefits because they are injured, are sick or have disabilities and are unable to work.

The Government said it showed how “out of touch” Luxon and National are.

The Labour MP for Nelson Rachel Boyack tweeted the following message which was liked by multiple Labour MPs.

“Just to be very, very clear, people who are unwell or have disabilities and aren’t able to work or are having difficulty finding work shouldn’t be sanctioned!”

But the Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni said it’s justified.

“It’s not hypocritical, when you look at the small numbers and the expectations that are in place, it’s us following the guidelines that we have.”

Sepuloni said the Government only sanctions people if medical advice shows they are fit to return to work.

Te Whata Ora, the new national health management agency has come up with a plan to speed up surgeries. It has directed hospitals to make a fixed schedule for when everyone on a waiting list will get their surgery. In addition it has instructed specialists to cut back on post operative consultations.

Who would have thought that micro-management was still alive? This brilliant policy is based on the assumption our hospital staff are lazy and don’t care about their patients.

It has never worked well in businesses and will have negative outcomes.

Had a relative who needed a hip replacement, every time his surgeon went to the ministry of health to beg for them to approve it, he was below the new points they had brought in, the op was denied until a complete collapse of the hip and as the surgeon said a fucken mess that took much longer to repair than it should of.

  I wonder if they will schedule in cancelled surgeries due shortage of bed space created by government failure to fund the beds. Or if they are going to shorten waiting lists by making it harder to get onto a waiting list (and thereby removing those that are no longer eligible). Or if the surgeons are in for a windfall as weekend lists at inflated rates are going to be reinstituted (where those predicted to be easy complication-free get done in extra quick time).

  This will simply lead to inefficient use of theatre space. Why?? In order to allow for acute cases there will have to “bookings” for accidents etc. You can’t book at the average but at the peak load for acute needs. That is the only way to provide certainty for planned surgery. Thus there will be many empty hours when below peak.

Refueling a combustion car to 100% takes between 2-7 minutes and gives you an average range of around 500km (310.6 miles). If the vehicle is a diesel the range is usually around 700km or more. At the extreme end of the scale we of course have combustion vehicles whose ranges easily exceed 1200km. Now according to the USA Federal Highway Administration – Department of Transportation the average american drives 14,263 miles or 22.954 kilometers. The average EU citizen drives 7021 miles or 11.300 km every year. Now if we take the average between USA and EU to be the global average this gives us 10642.224 miles or 17.127 km per year. Now let’s forget our optimistic 2 minute gas station stop. Let’s say that we spend 7 minutes at the gas station every time. The end result is that the average citizen of planet earth spends 239.8 minutes or 3.99 hours every year refueling the average combustion car. [20:36]

      You need at least as much power to split the water into Hydrogen and Oxygen (or whatever source is used, like methane), slightly more if you want to account for loss in cabling, etc. You then teed to spend money compressing and cooling it for transport, otherwise you have a very explosive gas at high volume to transport.
      Hydrogen is also (in case you forgot) the smallest atom, it’s really difficult to create and maintain hydrogen proof containers. this is expensive and there is leakage/loss.
      Then as with any combustion engine, burning the hydrogen doesn’t give 100% return on energy input (heat loss etc.). In the end for every erg of energy used to split water, you’re not getting anywhere near the same amount of energy out.

    Hydrogen cars are such a bad idea. The fuel is just too bulky and dangerous to store. It only works for larger vehicles. Trucks, Planes, Ships, Trains.
    
    Toyota senior management got into hydrogen 20-30 years ago and have held on grimly to the idea in the face of all logic and evidence that batteries have won – their personal egos and reputation are on the line, but they are screwing their company’s future as a result

    There’s a bloke called Avogadro who came up with a physical law that makes the idea of a hydrogen ICE very hard.
    
    Go back to the days of CNG. A heavy bottle on the vehicle full of (pretty much) methane and pumped up to about 200 atmospheres. Suppose that bottle had a range of 100km. 16 kg of methane occupies the same volume as 2 kg of hydrogen … so the same bottle pumped up with hydrogen and burned in the engine would have a range of about 12 km. Equal vols = equal moles and all that ….

      Trying to store anything as a gas significantly reduces the amount of material you can store and increases the dangerous pressures you need to work with.
      
      LPG is stored as a liquid which is why so much can be stored in a small volume.
      
      Hydrogen cannot be effectively liquified as that requires cryogenics. It is not realistic to keep your car at -250 degrees C.
      
      The only viable option would be chemical storage – where the hydrogen is chemically bonded to some other material (eg. metal hydrides) to reduce the vapour pressure, but this is still bulky and heavy.

        High pressure hydrogen leaks through connectors and embrittles steel pipes/bottles. Storing a reasonable amount in a vehicle is pretty hard. That’s all just chemistry, physics and engineering …
        
        Pretty much the only sensible way to turn hydrogen into motive power is through a fuel cell which can give much higher efficiency than an ICE. This has been known about for yonks and is still one of those “we will have this sorted in 10 years” things that has been going on for the last 40 ….

    A good modern diesel is up to 45% efficient, F1 engines have hit ~50%. PEM Fuel cells in cars like the Mirai are only about 45-50% efficient, but the hydrogen is a nightmare fuel. Better to use the hydrogen to manufacture synthetic hydrocarbons that are so much easier to handle and so much cheaper to convert to power using an IC engine.

      If people thought EVs were better they’d be buying them already.
      Fossil fuels are (or were until politicians really started getting involved) convenient, cheap, etc., and this is why people buy them. Some people even argue that they have a hidden benefit of warming the globe a little bit.
      We’ve had electric cars for well over a century. They pretty much have the same problems now as they did back when they first came out – short range, long time to charge etc. This is why they faded from use.
      Queering the pitch by buggering the FF market, and then claiming that it makes financial sense to buy EVs, or telling us what sort of car we need or don’t need (think utes and 4WD) isn’t the same thing. The net result is a lowering of our standard of living.

  An EV “fast charger” can maybe achieve 120kW.
  A standard petrol bowser at a filling station delivers almost a litre of fuel a second – around 20-30MW.
  
  Thus, the petrol bowser is transferring energy into the vehicle about 200x as fast as a Tesla “fast charger”.

    The 800 v system of Taycan and Audi GT can charge at a rate of 350 kw. 80% charge in 20 mins in cars that have round 500 km range.
    
    This technology will move into cheaper EV.s pretty quickly. Most major brands seem to already do around 400km, a huge increase on the 100 to 150 km that was typical a decade ago.
    
    In any event most EV owners do all their charging at home, so their car is almost always fully charged each day.
    
    How many of us need to do 500 km every day? Maybe on a holiday trip. As the EV charging network expands these range anxiety issues will disappear.

      If we’re going to talk about the higher speed stuff, then let’s compare with the high deliver diesel bowsers at some petrol stations. Those deliver fuel at almost 2 litres a second – around 60MW!
      
      That’s 170 or so times as fast. Filling a car to 80% will take you 20 seconds – not 20 minutes.
      
      Do you seriously expect people to stand around for 20 minutes at the filling station waiting for a charge?

        You missed my key point. Most people will charge their vehicles at home in the evening. Each day they will start off with 500 km range. How often will they even use public chargers? Not often, mostly on holiday.
        The reality is that EV’s will become the norm for new cars within a decade. I suspect you won’t even be able to buy a new ICE car in the western world by 2035.

      Lots of families have more than one car. Home chargers can charge only one car at a time. IC vehicles will be around for a long time yet. Don’t see many emergency EV vehicles nor back country farmers either. Many of those have a supply which, when they switch on the shearing plant the house lights dim.

      A bank has to be properly capitalised by shareholders and these shareholders have their arses on the line first if the bank goes belly up. These shareholders expect to receive a reasonable return on their investment plus a bit more because of that risk. The BNZ has failed twice in its history, the second time because yuppie managers (not the traditional ‘I am going to say no’ branch managers – their lending decisions were sound) were lending money all over the place.

When any real estate agents hear their buyers say “subject to finance through kiwibank” they roll their eyes and mutter f%#k because they decline the vast majority of loans. Take a look at their Facebook page, all beneficiaries moaning “I’ve been at the atm for 2 hours, where’s my dole, I’ve gotta feed my kids”. Kiwibank is really just a benefit payment provider.       The mortgage accounts were originally with HSBC, onsold to AMP, onsold to Kiwibank. Average service only. Last change, earlier this year, as example – all changes agreed on phone and confirmed by email. Until unexpected changes happened, not in a good way, more than once. Something wrong in their systems, or the people administering them. PITA.

    I believe the issue is that ACC and the NZ Super Fund require their investments to meet certain market criteria. Co-Governance will be outside that criteria so if Labour want to bring in co-governance at Kiwibank they have to remove ACC and the NZ Super Fund as owners.

    No Maggy, I think Dame Anne has hit on something important. The Treaty process has become all about lawyers, the Crown and “Maori”. That excludes the over 80% of NZers who have no Maori blood. Too often we are hearing talk about Maori (sometimes with Pacific Islanders tagged on) and their issues in a way that makes it sound like the Government doesn’t care about anyone else. The race-based focus is driving polarisation.
    
    Contrast that approach with the Charette method used in 1971 in Durham North Carolina to resolve school issues (se The Best of Enemies, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4807408/). That method looked at acknowledging issues and identifying concerns for everyone, then trying to solve them together. That’s what we lack now – a place in the process for non-Maori New Zealanders, to both hear and be heard.
    
    When you think about it, the idea that long-standing and deep issues can be resolved in a community by a process that leaves over 80% of the people out is just plain dumb.

  Were you thinking of Government banking business? Kiwibank has not wanted that business because its capital base is inadequate. Presumably Robbo could try and beef this up. Other issue (as far as I know) is Kiwibank systems are not up to it – they are OK for personal and small business accounts but would not scale up for large businesses and Government agencies.

  I remember that. 5 guys standing on the road all day to do a small repair.
  
  1. Set up little tent
  2. One guy works (slowly) while the other 4 stand around and watch. Tea breaks every 2 hours minimum.
  3. Come 2pm, regardless if finished or not, tent goes down. Sit in the truck untile 3pm and then depart (assumedly home).
  
  Max of one job per day. At least twice as many to do the repair as required.
  
  I believe the deal, for at least a while, was the MOW and Rail would employ all the people who couldn’t get work. This kept unemployment down and was essentially a ‘work for the dole scheme’. Might have actually been a good idea as at least the unemployed kept a routine.

  I have vivid memories of watching MoW road crews leaning on shovels doing jack as a kid sitting in the backseat of the family car observing NZ going by….
  
  Not that the current private crews seem to work any harder.
  
  Personally I would like to see NZ recruit road crews from Japan on 2 or 3 year contracts plus their management. Things would get build and/or fixed very quickly and the job would be done well.

  It is more than that. Clause 6 establishes New Zealand as a ‘State’ of Australia. The constitution was written in the period between about 1895 and 1899. It provided for New Zealand to be part of the New nation. However after the constitution was finalised, New Zealand walked away. However the provision is still there.
  
  If the New Zealand Government now said “yes please’ I am guessing that New Zealand would need to be admitted. The alternative would be to amend the constitution to exclude New Zealand, which would require a referendum.
  
  TBH the way things are heading now, I predict that opposition to New Zealand becoming a state of Australia would be less than it was a generation ago (or even 5 years ago!).

    The age of air travel changed that.
    
    Western Australia’s main city, Perth, is 3088km by air to Canberra, compared with 2366km from Wellington to Canberra.
    
    For comparison in 1900’s: sea travel from Fremantle to Melbourne at 15 knots, typically about 4 days 2 hours.

  Here’s the first few paragraphs of this morning’s Herald piece; well done to Kate McNamara for getting it past the censors:
  
  A government contract worth $72,299 including GST was awarded by the Crown housing agency to a company co-owned by Gannin Ormsby, the husband of Labour Minister Nanaia Mahuta, in a period when Mahuta had associate ministerial responsibility for housing.
  
  Ormsby’s consulting firm, Ka Awatea Services, was engaged in August, 2020 by Kāinga Ora to provide “specialist advice, support and resources” to facilitate six meetings (hui) and 14 workshops to engage with Māori and to provide a “high-level overview” of the agency’s Auckland housing projects.
  
  The agency said the meetings and workshops were delivered variously, online and in-person, and lasted roughly six hours apiece.
  
  A spokesman for Kāinga Ora said the Ka Awatea work, “did not fall under the ministerial responsibilities of Minister Mahuta at the time as this was in relation to our urban development programme (which comes under the responsibilities of the Housing Minister).”
  
  Mahuta was Associate Minister for Housing (Māori Housing) when the contract was awarded. The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s schedule of delegated responsibilities for associate ministers for the period noted Mahuta’s role included work that related to: “ensuring that housing for Māori whānau is appropriately catered for in Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities initiatives … [and] procurement policies to enhance Māori community development.”
  
  Hinemoa Awatere, acting deputy chief executive – Māori at Kāinga Ora, said there was “no communication with ministers in respect of the selection process” for the Ka Awatea contract, and that “no conflicts of interest were identified at Kāinga Ora.”
  
  A spokesperson for Mahuta said: “The contract did not require ministerial approval so no conflict was raised.”
  
  Unlike one or two of the other allegations against Ms Mahuta and her husband, this one relates directly to a time and place where she was an Associate Minister. It is inconceivable that neither she nor Ormsby, not Kainga Ora for that matter, sought to raise a conflict of interest.

Schools were asked 4 weeks ago to make kids wear masks to get through the wave so they did. Today that 4 weeks is up and there is another three weeks being added because we are told by the school masks are a tool along with their other tools of hygiene, ventilation etc to deal with a range of bugs going around. Yip so any bug can justify forced masking. Wonder how this affects learning, mental health and socialisation. It certainly teaches fear and compliance. My body your choice.

    The reason you and legacy media and Jacinda are worried about Chantelle is her 97,000 followers on Facebook. Why? Because she gave real on the ground coverage of the Parliament Protest. Legacy media cowered on parliament’s balcony and wouldn’t cross the line imposed by Mallard. With the exception of B Soper. Or any news that was given was heavily anti-protest, dehumanising and inaccurate. Most NZers know people who were at the protest and on the whole we know them to be good people. So this drove people to find news sources they could trust.
    
    Given the number of people that watch rather than follow Chantelle is probably 5-10x more that is a lot of viewership.
    
    Coincidental that she was deplatformed and Rebel News Avi Yemeni stopped from entering the country this week? Cook Strait Ferries taken down for maintenance resulting in many STH Island protestors stranded.

Newshub should hang their heads in shame. They won’t of course. In one item last night they discussed Kiri Allen’s message to Sharma and the other MPs. They could and should have read out this message in full. It’s not that long. It clearly tells their new MPs not to send anything in writing that they have not talked about beforehand, due to the OIA Act. When they asked Ardern about this she said that it was about confidentiality of constituents details (!!?) and denied that it directed MPs to avoid the intent of the OIA. This went unchallenged. This must be the softest interview of a minister on a matter that may involve breaches of law since Jack Tame interviewed Mahuta and assisted her to dismiss allegations of conflict of interest as racist.

Headline on the NZ Herald:

‘Proud’: TVNZ responds to viewers’ complaints over te reo Māori weather report

This is in response to Sunday night’s weather report, where the presenter used a mix of Maori and English. Apparently some people complained on social media, and TVNZ has responded with:

We are proud of our presenters and how they embrace New Zealand’s unique cultural identity. Our presenters and journalists are welcome to use a combination of English and te reo Māori where appropriate.”

(Highlighting is mine).

I’ve said before and I’ll say it again – I have no objection to people using Maori where appropriate. On this I agree with TVNZ. But I cannot agree that presenting the news and the weather – a service which used to be considered essential – is an appropriate forum. The presentation of the national news, and the weather, should be done in such a manner as to communicate clearly and unambiguously. If that can be done using some Maori, then fine. But TVNZ News isn’t achieving that. They are regularly using an unwieldy mixture of Maori and English in contexts that make it very difficult to follow the story, or in this case the weather report.

With the devastation wrought in Nelson, I would have thought that the primary consideration is to communicate upcoming weather events as clearly as possible. But not, apparently, in TVNZ’s mind. It’s as if in their rush to embrace the use of Maori, they’ve completely forgotten their job description.

The Herald article is actually misleading, in that it makes out that the presenter simply used Maori and English for cities. If that was all she had done, then the argument that people should be able to cope with that might have some validity. But in fact, if you watch the Sunday weather on-demand, you will see that is not the case. She used Maori phrases through-out the presentation – not just for place-names – to a degree where neither my wife nor I could understand it.

It’s a shame that inevitably, when this topic comes up, it’s reduced to the media saying that they don’t see a problem with using Maori and implying that the people who voice complaints need to simply accept it. Because they never address the true issue that is raised – many viewers simply can’t understand the news or the weather because of this. My wife is an avid viewer of the weather report, using it to plan her day ahead, but last Sunday evening she simply skipped over it and instead went to the computer and looked it up there. Because she could not understand it.

My wife won’t take to social media to complain. She won’t write in or grumble to her friends. She’ll simply stop watching.

Until such time as the regular presenter returns – who my wife can understand – she’s chosen to get her weather report from the Internet instead. Because she can at least understand it. And TVNZ meanwhile will continue to dismiss people like my wife as racist or a dinosaur, ignoring the simple truth that many people around the country genuinely … can’t … understand … their … presenter.

She’s not on Facebook, Instagram, or any other social media, and doesn’t follow these debates. When it comes to the weather, she’s interested in one thing – can she understand it?
    
    And the fact is, she can’t. So she quite naturally will turn to another platform that she can understand.
    
    Sadly, TVNZ seem to have stuck their head in the sand, fingers in their ears, and choose to treat anybody who dares say “Well your weather presenter can obviously speak both English and Maori very well, which is impressive … but, umm, I can’t actually understand what she’s saying, I can’t follow the weather report, and isn’t that kind of the point?” as a racist dinosaur.
    
    The idea that they might just have a valid point never occurs.

      TV3, owned by the American company, Discovery, seems to promote Maori language as vigorously as TVNZ.
      
      If there’s a market gap in NZ’s news media, it’s on the Right.
      
      Discovery paid $20 million for TV3. If it sold the NZ broadcaster, for a little less, someone could make money repositioning TV3 on the Right, and sticking to English language.
      
      There are enough Maori-language media choices now, with two Maori TV channels, a network of 20 tribal radio stations, semi-Maori Radio NZ, and with Stuff which recently experimented with dual-language stories, in English and Maori in alternative paragraphs.

Sharma has spoken to reporters post caucus expulsion. Comes across as articulate and reasonable. Caucus members have been given clear talking points for interactions with MSM. Brand Sharma as ‘untrustworthy’. Pretty pathetic really. Can’t have a proper investigation of a complaint, got to protect the Queen. Thing seem to be getting pretty tense in the Labour party right now; who is next to walk??

    There’s clearly some validation to Dr Sharma’s claims as the framing of Ardern’s responses are very scripted, eg untrustworthy, colleagues feel betrayed etc, coupled with a very guarded comment over the OIA training from Aysha Verrall, who apparantly ran that part, seem a little contrived.
    Not all what Dr Sharma has said maybe 100% correct, but there’s enough uncertainty to warrant an independent investigation. If its all as Ardern has said, she would be vindicated, but alas I feel she (and the Labour Party) will be found wanting so its not going to happen.

    As you may recall, education materials use context when asking children to do maths and science. i.e. “how much water can Billy fit in X sized container?”, or whatever the desired problem to solve is.
    
    There’s no reason why Maori themes and scenarios can’t be incorporated in that way.

News flash

On August 20th, a group of HELLS ANGELS, South Carolina bikers were riding east on 378 when they saw a girl about to jump off the Pee Dee River Bridge.

So they stopped.

George, their leader, a big burly man of 53, gets off his Harley, walks through a group of gawkers, past the State Trooper who was trying to talk her down off the railing, and says, “Hey Baby . . . whatcha doin’ up there on that railin’?”

She says tearfully, “I’m going to commit suicide!!”

While he didn’t want to appear “sensitive,” George also didn’t want to miss this “be-a-legend” opportunity either so he asked . . . “Well, before you jump, Honey-Babe . . . why don’t you give ol’ George here your best last kiss?”

So, with no hesitation at all, she leaned back over the railing and did just that . . . and it was a long, deep, lingering kiss followed immediately by another even better one.

After they breathlessly finished, George gets a big thumbs-up approval from his biker-buddies, the onlookers, and even the State Trooper, and then says, “Wow! That was the best kiss I have ever had! That’s a real talent you’re wasting there, Sugar Shorts. You could be famous if you rode with me. Why are you committing suicide?”

“My parents don’t like me dressing up like a girl.”

It’s still unclear whether she jumped or was pushed.

The Disinformation Project definitions for mis, dis, mal and dangerous information:

Misinformation: “false information that people didn’t create with the intent to hurt others”
Disinformation: “false information created with the intention of harming a person, group, or organization, or even a company”
Malinformation: “true information used with ill intent”
“dangerous speech is any form of expression (e.g. speech, text or images) that can increase the risk that its audience will condone or participate in violence against members of another group.”

There is no frame of reference for how to decide what is true or false information. Nor do they see room for grey areas – information is only categorised as true or false.

Funny that we didn’t hear TDP in the media decrying the dangerous speech of Michael Woods calling parliamentary protesters “rivers of filth”. The effects of this dangerous speech have been evident by some of the KB trolls who feel the violence meted out to Parliamentary Protestors was justified.

  You’d have to be just a wee bit sceptical on “The Disinformation Project”, surely.
  
  Described as “an independent research group studying misinformation and disinformation in Aotearoa New Zealand”, it was set up in early 2020. I presume the people involved don’t do this for free, and the group receives funding, although I don’t know. I notice it was “brought together” by Te Pūnaha Matatini, a Centre of Research Excellence hosted by the University of Auckland.
  
  But the problem is that, once you have set up a research group to study something, that “something” has to exist, and continue to evolve. There’s no point in continuing on with studying something that really isn’t there, or is at such a low level as to not be worthy of investigating. If you have a vested interest in the continued existence of the group, you have to continually find fresh mis/dis-information to report on and analyse.
  
  I can’t help wondering how self-fulfilling “The Disinformation Project” is. They think, surely there must be mis/dis-information out there somewhere; so they go hunting for it; and eventually they find … something … that looks like mis/dis-information to them. “Ah-ha!”, they say, “We were right! Look at this … MISINFORMATION!”
  
  Sounds like a bunch of conspiracy theorists, if you ask me …

I am no supporter of Winston but if he campaigns on this at the next election, NZ first will not only make the 5% but they could be in double figures. There are plenty of Gold Card holders who will feel strongly about the way Labour are trying to force change on NZ without having declared their intentions. The Māori Party could very quickly find themselves on the rubbish heap.

Listening to the 3PM News bulletin on State Radio RNZ, the following item struck me as interesting.
“Brian Tamaki has baselessly accused the Transport Minister of cancelling the Interisland Ferry sailings…”
So RNZ now adds their own opinions of any accusation. Later on in the bulletin allegations of protestors being ‘facist’, Sharma being a ‘bully’ etc were not accompanied by the ‘baseless’ description.
Increasingly, State-funded media in particular are adding their own descriptions to the news to signpost for us which claims need to be rejected as ‘baseless’, or someone ‘lashing out’ etc.
I think this is a a very bad trend.

        Tonight, I spoke to a man who ran a business in the Wairarapa, and has had first hand dealings with McAnulty.
        
        He told me that McAnulty is a complete bully, abd that he has also spoken with a woman who was best friends with McAnulty’s ex girlfriend. He also told me that the rumours about what happened at the time of his election are completely true.
        
        While Politicians families may be off limits, if the media deem it appropriate to lambast Sam Uffendel for what he did at 16, then it would be just as approrpiate to challenge McAnulty for his behaviour 5 years ago, especially if the other party is no longer family.

If the public interest journalism fund contained a condition for accessing it, that it was necessary to support the labour government that would have been clearly unethical and anti-democratic.

But what if you could create a proviso for access that is supported by a high proportion of your voters but very few of the oppositions. In effect you would create a slush fund financing journalists likely to support your political party.

So what if there was evidence that the conditions of the PIJF were selected because it was understood that this would result in a journalistic cheerleading squad for labour?

  I guess the answer, sadly, is “so what?”. There has been scant response to solid evidence that Labour are training their new MPs to subvert the OIA. Scant interest in the Mahuta conflicts of interest. Journalism in this country is mostly corrupt. That is something that 3, 6, or 9 years of having a level playing field and the majority of journalists reverting to a role of holding the government to account isn’t going to fix. It’s going to take some determined action and the courage and conviction to see it to a conclusion.
