Another day, another self-appointed spokesperson for all maori people attacks white colonialists for culturally appropriating “their” language. Dr Byron Rangiwai bleats in yesterday’s Stuff story about his horror at the soundtrack featuring te Reo during Princess Diana’s (or as he calls her, the “white Christian princess”) bulimia portrayal in The Crown as racist, colonialist etc etc.

Te Reo is supposedly an official language of New Zealand (“Aotearoa”) but it can only be used freely by the self-claimed “maori” citizens of our land? It’s totally useless as an official language if only a tiny minority of the population can freely use it.

      Rangiwai’s syncretism parallels “Chrislam”, a tiny movement that sprang up first in Nigeria and apparently tries to merge Christianity and Islam.
      
      Can the many gods of the Polynesians be put into some sort of religion alongside Jesus Christ, Jehovah, and, who knows, Islam’s Prophet and the deities of Hinduism?
      
      Some of Otago University’s departments are becoming dubious. Think of the internally warring peace studies department. Then of a former trade unionist, a Labour-Maori activist, teaching entrepreneurship.
      
      Of most concern are the Maori committee which apparently vets all research projects and the race-based entry to some medical courses.

        Since that post I’ve delved into the conclusions in Rangiwai’s thesis (from about page 252).
        
        It’s interesting even for us theology-sceptics, and thank you Maggy Wassilieff.
        
        The Kiwiblog poster Black with a Vengeance sometimes gives us echoes from this Polynesian religious world that Rangiwai talks of in this way:
        
        Tohunga-led research into karakia tahito [ancient chants] is needed. Having said that, there will be specific limitations regarding the tapu surrounding this knowledge and the skill level in te reo Maori required to read and comprehend such research.
        
        We’re striking old divides again, as with Maori knowledge versus science. Can a valid religion be developed by merger in the modern world when some of its core will be secret and non-written?

  OK, time to demand that English be established as the “primary” language of New Zealand, to be used first in all matters, as it is the one language we know every citizen can comprehend, and has a huge worldwide comprehension. Ensure that every student at schools in New Zealand have a high degree of competency with English first.
  
  Relegate Te Reo as a cultural asset for those so inclined, and sign language only where an alternative (a friend or family member there to translate – a written version) is not available.

Every time the MSM introduces another maori word, or some crown agency comes up with a maori name for itself we need to shout ‘cultural appropriation’ and call these people out for what they are.   It seems Dr Byron Rangiwai is unaware of the fact that the London Maori Haka Group – Ngāti Rānana – were commissioned to perform the Haka for “The Crown”.
  
  Charlie Panapa from Ngāti Rānana London Māori Club confirmed to The Spinoff that they were involved in filming the haka scene that features in the trailer. While he was unable to share any specifics about the scene itself, Panapa confirmed it was set during the Prince and Princess of Wales’ 1983 Australasian tour.

      Why should I support National or ACT, when they behaved so abominably towards people who opposed the vax mandates?
      
      Besides, if the Nats had any sense, they wouldn’t chase the electoral vote in Northland too hard. They would give Matt King a clear run, as they do for Seymour in Epsom. That way, they would be guaranteed 3-5 extra seats in a coalition to rid NZ of Labour and the Greens.

I also cannot stand people that want to stand for local politics with the intention of also standing for national while in local.     The is just ridiculously circular: because they won’t get into Parliament, we shouldn’t vote for any minor party, because they won’t get into Parliament. How bad do things have to get before you even attempt to do anything different?
    
    I understand why you say this, and I’m not saying that any particular party is the way to go, but what exactly is the alternative? Bend over and hold your ankles for the rest of your life because doing something else is too uncertain? Enjoy getting screwed then.

David Seymour has done some stupid things, but he has put together a credible party that comes closest to representing my views and I think the views of most of the active people on this blog. I see that the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s new production of the Cinderella story is ‘breaking new ground’ by featuring a gay relationship between two of the princes. You really have to wonder about the mindset of those making such decisions about an art form such as ballet which is already stigmatized about being for sissies! If ever there was an enterprise which would benefit from an injection of male heterosexual testosterone you would think it would be ballet. But clearly not the Royal New Zealand Ballet! Men dancing in tights falling in love with each other is their idea of ‘breaking new ground’. Heaven’s preserve us!

        Some regard male dancing as effeminate, but don’t include among the “some” Cossacks, or the old-days Highlanders prancing above crossed swords. Even haka is a dance, according to Wikipedia.
        
        Footwork enhanced by dancing workouts would benefit many sportsmen.

    Maggy, I saw the RNZ Ballet preform Romeo & Juliet at Saddlers Wells in London in the late 1990s. It was an honest interpretation & was very good.
    
    In an effort to broaden our son’s cultural awareness (because he is most certainly not getting it at school with the modern NZ curriculum), we were booked to go and see this production of Cinderella by the RNZ Ballet. That was until we learned that they had butchered the story line with the modern woke agenda.
    
    Sadly, both the Ballet and symphony orchestra are funded by NZ on Air, and so will be prone to undue influence as to the content of their production. Although there will not have been direct govt influence, the reality is such outcomes are a result of government policy or the vacuum created by the foolishness of the clowns in charge.

    It is often claimed that art is meant to challenge the viewer. It may well do this, but only incidentally. I think that art at its core is really an aesthetic activity wherein contemplation of beauty elevates and leads to transcendence of what is “given” to the person contemplating the object.
    
    Modernism in all its manifestations is meant to repudiate the past and tradition in the name of “progress,” particularly a rejection of the idea of “restrictive” forms and genres. Modern art, and even more so postmodern art, is a self-conscious rejection of beauty and a substitution for oppressive and dehuminising ugliness. It’s fundamentally anti-aesthetic. On top of that, it doesn’t even “challenge” the viewer in any way any more (except to challenge them to not vomit), and is really just hyper-conformist politically orthodox propaganda.   I have enjoyed, for many years, traditional, and some contemporary, ballet but would not spend my money on such as they have now.

CTU economist, Craig Renney, says that Nationals tax figures don’t add up. Surprize, surprize from the governments most ardent supporter.
How come the CTU economist hasn’t commented on the government borrowing $86 million per day, or around $3.5 Million per hour and we still have a shambles in Education, Health, social housing, child poverty and not to mention race relations.
If National keep getting critiqued on their tax policy, they should just say ‘it’s hard to cement in the figures giving the amount of daily debt the government is racking up’ – Then give actual examples of wasteful spending (cycle bridges, Poly Tech cost over-runs & CEO MIA, 3 waters, cost of living allowance etc).

  Asa matter of interest I watched tv3 “news” to see if/how they’d cover the Nat conference .
  
  The only matter they covered from it was this tax business , and as you say they gave a trade unionist the say on it .
  Surely there were other matters covered at the conference ?

    Very good points, would also like to see the MSM start questioning Ardern and Robertson on how long they intend to keep borrowing at that rate because it can’t go on indefinitely (let alone another year).
    
    Something will have to give and it is only a matter of time – I think NZers deserve to know the answers because Labour’s present settings are determining our future (and it won’t be a good one)!

    SA has been changing names for a while now. Sometimes the change takes hold immediately, such as Port Elizabeth being called Gqeberha since last year, sometimes it takes time, Nelspruit was changed to Mbombela around 2010 or so and is slowly being known as the latter, and sometimes it gets renamed but never takes hold – Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban have all been renamed but the change hasn’t really caught on and the ‘colonialist’ names still show on maps. Some places like Cape Town will probably never be renamed due to the international status of the name.
    
    For what it’s worth, the name changes usually have broad support and are usually consulted on, sometimes even with competitions to come up with a suitable name. With circa 80% of the population african by ethnicity, no surprise that the new names are more african than european.

  You and I can remember back to the great days when the players left the farm the meatworks the office and pulled on the jersey for a small daily allowance. They played for pride NOT for dollars.

But there are always dips and troughs, remember the 90’s?(96 being the exception)the AB’s will bounce back, they always have and always will.       Seems the nostalgia goggles are on. Yes there were the true amateur players you mention. But remember it was in this era that Auckland dominated NZ rugby with its team full of ‘amateurs ’ in cushy jobs eg sales reps for breweries that allowed them plenty of time off to practice.
      
      The All Blacks will be good when the team puts the game before themselves. This includes the coach and the CEO. They don’t have that right at the moment .

      Pretty close to the mark pdm. Ta’avao couldn’t hold his side up at scrum time against Ireland and Foster expected him to be better against South Africa? This is one of Fosters problems. He seems to think he’s Mr Talent Identification Guy. And picks Ta’avao, Tupaea, Clark and Taukei’aho who are fine players. At provincial level and better than average at Super level. But imho they aren’t currently test quality. And after losing to Ireland, he doesn’t pick Taylor at all and has Vaa’i as reserve lock. Now Vaa’i is a very big lad and a decent footy player. But a test player he is currently not. Willemse is quick, but would never have caught Reese from behind like he did Clark. Clark is a big blockbusting player. But a test winger? Hmmm. I reckon his consistent selection of players who are not the best in their positions or selection of players who are the best in their position at other positions smacks of someone that has no real idea what he is doing. A similar thing happened under John Mitchell.

  Well Captain, if he had been referring to Savea, I might have said yep. I thought Savea was outstanding. Again, and following up a succession of outstanding games. I have to say as a rider, four years ago or so I thought he was an imposter. But he seemed to get what it meant to be an AB, got fitter, his work rate went through the roof. He is now an absolute brute who just never says die. The only bad thing I can say about him is that he doesn’t play for Canterbury!!

To me Ian Foster’s glib remarks after the latest All Black loss are symptoms of a lot of what is wrong with our country at the moment.
Claiming this was the best effort this year and how important it is for All Blacks to play with smiles on their faces reflects the modern, soft approach to motivation that has become our society’s norm.
It is kindness in action. Richie McCaw was reported as disinterested in his team-mates personal lives. He got results. Kieran Read had an much more empathetic, humanistic approach. The slide started with him.
These guys are paid a fortune to perform. The team and culture need a clean out.

    This was an improved performance, the boks scored 2 opportunistic trys and we missed at least 2. Time to stick with a starting lineup. The glaring mistakes for me were the 2 penalities given away by Frizzel and Dane Coles just after they came on, that is a coaching matter because both players have the propsensity to “fire up” unnecessarily. On another night things would have gone Jordan’s way, our midfield and pack generally were better and were strong going into the half. We might all be armchair experts but most know when passes stick confidence builds and the ABs were dogged in their determination.

      No doubt we are armchair experts Brian! However, passes haven’t stuck in pretty much any of the AB’s games under Foster against tier 1 opponents. There are a couple of glaring things (1) our backs look lack lustre, appear to have been given instructions to kick the ball away constantly and have been given no strategy to defeat a rush defence and (2) every time we go on the field with any combo of Ta’avao, Bower, Tu’ungafasi and Lomax, our scrum is an accident waiting to happen. These lads might well become better, but do it in Super Rugby rather than test matches where a wobbly scrum loses you games.

    I know a few folks in local and central government jobs. The issue is never the front line folks – the nurses, police etc are always too few and poorly paid for the work they have to do. They do a good job, often in trying circumstances.
    
    The problem is the support structure and the bloated middle and senior management. The entire system has become a kind of middle-class welfare. Extremely well paid jobs, no performance requirements, limited productivity and all reinforced by consultants and contractors quite content with getting juicy fees or projects. The remuneration reviews for the middle & senior management are led by ‘independent’ consultants, which surprise-surprise, always recommend hefty pay rises, with future contracts for rubber stamping reviews and business cases contingent on favourable remuneration recommendations – completely independent (yeah right). Audits are always tick boxes and the rort continues.
    
    It seems that when we have a Labour government, the sector grows significantly and when we get a National government, the sector pauses at best.

      Top of my list right now is the Human Rights Commission.
      
      Not only are they just a lefty policy and ideas manufacturer, in doing so saving Labour from having to do the hard yards, they have betrayed New Zealanders, weekly it seems, by demanding more and more state intervention in our private lives – abrogating one of the most significant ACTUAL human rights and not just one of the recently made up ones – that of the human right to be as free as possible from state coercion in our lives, irrespective of purpose.
      
      Defund them. Throw the lot of them out on the street!

      At the first Director’s meeting I was told my contract would be annually reviewed by a major Appointment Company.
      A couple of years later I was told the perhaps this should be reviewed as my package now was as much as the Chairman, who in turn was a GM of a public company in Auckland.
      All I said that under the points system they introduced, the new car I wanted happened to be the same as the Chairman’s (I did not know that at the time) new one too.
      I graciously acceeded (naturally) and took another make.

Losing trust in “the science”.

I commented along these lines on a different post yesterday, that apart from a few outliers (who have been suitably smeared, sacked, deplatformed or in other ways punished) there is cowardice among our health professionals in regard to covid.

Possibly in the first 6 month there was an excuse. Panic, fear, all driven by a deliberate, documented psychological manipulation programme. But after 2 and a half years we now have real world evidence. Why are there not more medical people speaking out?

      There will be reports and analyses being released for decades to come, but don’t expect the media to release it while their favourite politicians are in power.
      In my opinion this Labour government is dying on its feet. It has lost the pandemic war and apart from announcing new amounts of cash to various causes it is not actually doing anything as the air slowly fizzles out of their balloon.
      In the meantime we all carry on as well as we can.

        Ross, it is insufficient for a person to simply be a medical professional in order for their argument to be correct. Professionals get sued for malpractice or for negligence frequently. But on your premise, how can this be? They’re professionals, aren’t they? And professionals are, by your definition, always correct simply on account of their status. Clearly this is demonstrably false. If their argument is incorrect (i.e. isn’t logical or backed by available evidence), then all of the qualifications in the world won’t make them correct.

        A GP I know takes his mask off when he has a consultation with the maskless. He knows this is a sham but also knows he will be excommunicated by nz medical council if he puts a foot out of line. So in fact the Medical council is getting its direction from Jacinda, who removed the right to informed consent for medical professionals. Well they could choose but not if they wanted to stay in practice.

An argument from authority is still fallacious though, which is why who makes the argument doesn’t in any way determine its validity, just as who builds your house doesn’t guarantee it will remain standing.     If there is a sharp dichotomy between the propositions advanced by “reasonable” people and those advanced by “conspiracy theorists” on the subject of Covid and related matters over the preceding two years, it is that the latter have a far better record with regard to their arguments aligning with reality.
    
    Read 99% of the “conspiracy theories” (i.e. any argument that conflicts with approved narratives) that appear in the KB realm, and they tend to be rationally constructed and obey the rules of logic and of empirical science. You may not like these arguments, but dislike doesn’t get us anywhere in our quest for knowledge.
    
    By contrast the “rationalists” tend to fall back on “experts say…” fallacies in support of their positions. Now you have an opportunity to redress this imbalance, Ross. As representative of the rational camp, please lay out your rational positive case for vaccination, masks and/or whatever other policy prescription you support.       I honestly don’t think interest among readers is very high at all but since you ask my position is quite straight forward really.
      I am in favour of the lifting of most Covid restrictions now as I think they are past their use by date and whether they were effective in the first place or not is open to debate depending on your point of view.
      Some aspects of NZ’s Covid response has been rubbish but some of it was also good in my opinion so overall I have mixed feelings about it all.
      However where I differ from a large amount of commenters on here is in relation to conspirational angles which are constantly peddled.
      I have time for people who are anti mandates or anti vax if you have a credible reason but as soon as you start talking about “Great Resets”, UN 2030 agendas, comparing NZ to North Korea,saying Ardern is akin to Stalin and other associated nonsense then you lose all credibility in my eyes and I can’t take you seriously.
      Like it or hate it that’s my position.

    Explain why any of the information I have posted to date is “conspiracy based” and give examples of the “reason based” views you believe that some medical professionals use.
    
    BTW, those medical “professionals” would do well to peruse the Daily Skeptic. It has many, many scientific papers in it.
    Also they are not “anti vax” and never were. They began as critics of lockdown which they claimed wouldn’t work very early in the covid circus. They have proven to be 100% correct.
    
    “Could be”, “maybe” and “I suspect” are pretty weak positions to take. Maybe investigate something properly and come back with some firm opinion and supportive evidence.

  Clan we are in agreement on most of this, but differ on a few points:
  
  NZ Health Professionals fall into the same groups as the rest of the country
  – pro the vacinne and mandates
  – pro the vacinne, pro choice
  – ambivalent, go with the flow and eventually the situation will go away
  – anti the vacinne and mandates, did it anyway to keep business, feed the family
  – pro choice and stood up for their principals and had everything- years of study, career, business, etc – stolen from them
  
  So medical people on the whole have been a massive disappointment apart from NZDSOS. But then the same goes for most NZers.
  
  Even now, while most can see through the Emperor’s new clothes, most still wear masks, or their children do at school, and ignore that mandates are still keeping people of principle out of their jobs.
  
  We need to fight to END THE MANDATES please see my post below with link to petition to this effect.

  Hospital waiting lists, gangs, and truancy have always been a problem under every government but apparently he is going to fix all this when he is in charge.

My wife and I watched the weather on One News tonight. At least, we tried to. The weather presenter used so much Maori mixed in with English that I genuinely had no idea what she said half the time. It was a complete waste of time for us; we’ll have to check the weather on our preferred website instead.

I honestly don’t understand why they do this. I understand the arguments for using the occasional Maori word, but this was incomprehensible. And for those who would say “Google it” I offer a challenge – watch the programme and try it. I guarantee you will be unable to, due to the sheer volume of Maori language used.
