Is this what Labour wants for our population when it comes to crime.
Victims of crime owed more than $35 Million in unpaid reparations over three years.

This is disgraceful if this had happened to a sitting MP in Parliament it would have been paid the moment he complained, where has all these kind and caring policies that the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her MP’s passed through Parliament for innocent people like these.
It looks like criminals and the scum of New Zealand have more rights than the hard working population.

Celcius crypto – After someone I knew had some Bitcoin ‘trapped’ in Celcius I have tried to find out what Celcius is all about. The easy part is a punter can deposit Bitcoin (or similar) and is paid interest. Promoters say it is safe etc etc. But why the heck would an outfit want to accept Bitcoin deposits and what would they do with it. This is where I get all confused. They could use it for short selling Bitcoin (in a similar manner to short selling shares). Now, it seems that Celcius has been doing other weird things with depositors’ Bitcoin which potentially puts it as risk of being lost. And Celcius’s financial position has become shaky over the last year or so with Celcius applying bandaids to try and keep the sinking ship afloat. But the proverbial hit the fan last week when Celcius stopped allowing Bitcoin withdrawals. It was just like an old fashioned bank run where people flock to a bank to get their money out for fear of losing their money. So Celcius is actually a Bitcoin ‘bank’ but without the regulatory oversight that is imposed on ordinary banks.
Whether punters get their Bitcoin back goodness knows. I thought it was a 50% chance but I now think that is excessively optimistic.In USA various state agencies and the Feds are on to it. I suspect someone will be doing a perp walk fairly soon along the lines of Bernie Madoff.

Like Grant, I find National/Luxons torpor over 3 waters/ co-governance inexplicable….the expectation of a sleepwalking victory over a rabid Labour Party doesn’t cut the mustard I’m afraid.

  It is all about timing – something Damien does not seem to appreciate. National does not have the numbers to stop these things now and if it shows too much of its hand it gives Labour too much of a chance to hit back. Better to keep the ammo dry until nearer the next election.

No, much better to wait until the dogshit is already on the carpet and then clean up the mess afterwards (and maybe even not clean it up), rather than getting the dog outside at the first signs of an impending bowel movement.

  The Labour Party has dumbed down the population so many don’t care about politics as long as Jacinda keeps smiling and Robertson keeps paying out the money for the maintenance of “well being” lifestyles.
  There will be a lot of voters who will not want to risk their state mandated, tax payer funding being turned off.
  The writer includes Mr Muller in his list of National Party people of influence.

    Whether Mr Muller remains an electorate MP is a matter for National members of his electorate. Chris Luxon has ranked him 24/32. If there was strong feeling to show him the door, Chris would have ranked him right near the bottom.
    Also it is not entirely fair to blame him completely for what happened. The National caucus was demoralised to the point of panic by poor poll results and was starting to disintegrate. So it was little wonder that they wanted a ‘circuit breaker’ in the form of a change of leadership. Todd had been successful in his endeavours and would have been in stressful situations. So he ended up as a mere mortal trying to do the job of Superman with extremely high expectations and something had to give which it did.
    Chris currently needs every bit of talent and experience available and so Todd is is far more valuable to the team than a newcomer.

  ‘Torpor over Three Waters co-governance’ … Luxon/National have pledged to repeal Three Waters and his position on co-governance was neatly summed up (yet again) in his speech to National’s Northern Conference last week when he said the co-governance had no place in the provision of public services.

  I don’t agree on this one, National have continually condemned 3 Waters and said they will over turn it. The Major and Morrison Governments mentioned weren’t trying to restructure their democracies. In the UK the Blair/Brown Labour Government from 2005 was more in the mold of this Ardern Government. UK Labour’s ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon with no democratic mandate saw them lose the next election and they haven’t been back in since. The Treaty of Lisbon was a considerable building block towards a Federal Europe and put the UK on the road towards Brexit.

  I have often wondered how our teachers vote. Now I suspect it is mostly Labour Green Maori. I would be concerned if it was mostly National/ACT.
  The reason is our young people should be exposed to a variety of poltical views as they grow up so they can make up their mind as to their own political views.
  I suspect my views are someehat uptopian in todays social and political climate.

  Luxon spelled National’s attitude towards co-governance out pretty clearly last week in his speech to the Northern Regional Conference:
  
  But, unfortunately, as this Government gets more desperate, it’s more often than not resorting to playing Kiwis off against each other. Landlords versus renters. Business owners versus workers. Urban versus rural.
  
  It focuses on identify politics and factionalism that’s more about pitting people against each other, rather than bringing them together.
  
  Then there’s the assault on the fundamental principle that everyone’s vote carries the same value as everyone else’s and none are more valuable than others.
  
  That should be a given in New Zealand. Instead, there’s an emerging co-governance programme that Labour has sprung on the public without much warning or discussion.
  
  If it wants to undermine democratic principles, the Government should be transparent about that.
  
  National doesn’t support co-governance of public services.
  
  The National Government I lead will be ruthlessly focused on delivering better outcomes for Māori, non-Māori and all New Zealanders alike.
  
  We want every Kiwi to have the opportunity to flourish and to get ahead. Yes, we know that Māori tend to have poorer economic and social outcomes, and we have to address that.
  
  But I want this to be a country where your life prospects are not defined by your identity, or your race, or where you are born.
  
  And we won’t achieve that vision by creating different systems for Māori and non-Māori. To me that’s a cop out.
  
  That’s why we will abolish the Māori Health Authority, that even the Government acknowledges won’t lead to better health outcomes for the next five years.

  Luxon, and other National MP’s are also on the record multiple times saying that if they are elected next year, they will repeal Three Waters, and return the control of local assets to local communities. That’s hardly torpor.

    Some of us are spooked by the co-governance views of former National MPs such as Wayne Mapp and Chris Finlayson.
    
    How much power has National’s Old Guard of former politicians? Surely it was pulling some of the puppet strings in the comic-opera performance that made Todd Muller Leader of the Opposition for just under two months.
    
    National Parliamentary roles of Mapp, who posts on Kiwiblog, included being associate spokesperson on the Treaty of Waitangi from 1999 to 2002.
    
    Finlayson was Minister for Waitangi Treaty negotiations for nine years. Before becoming a list MP, Finlayson was well-known for his skilful negotiation of the Treaty settlement for the South Island’s Ngai Tahu tribe.

    Med students with marks of 96% average across all subjects cannot get into Otago med school!
    They have to sit on the sidelines while ‘special’ entries with 76-84% grades get in ahead of them…

    I went to Canada in 1969 to do a PhD. As it happens I returned to a uni teaching job in NZ. I was a far better educated (and more useful) person than if I had stayed in NZ.

      Sure, but a general rule that you can’t leave New Zealand without repaying debts to your fellow taxpayers could be useful. Or allow graduates to repay debts faster by fixed terms of service, etc.

  NZ has always had 3 med schools – Auckland, Otago and offshore. A fair proportion of NZ graduates head offshore to Oz or further. This problem has been around forever.
  
  A significant increase in the number of NZ grads would take years to happen.It takes about 8 years go to whoa to take someone from keen high school student to independently practicing medic. So if we decoded to go hard today it would be about 10 years before we saw significant numbers. Admittedly I am not counting the work done in hospital by house officers.
  
  This is perhaps a reason why it should be started now. I remember that Waikato was pitching for a med school with some emphasis on rural medicine but it went nowhere.
  
  Medical training is expensive. Some of that comes from the fact that medically qualified uni staff are paid more (a different scale) than the rest.
  
  Here is a thoroughly off-the-wall idea. We could train some doctors who don’t meet offshore standards. Just leave out some bits eg geriatrics and/or paediatrics and/or something else. Training fully up to scratch in all the rest. These folk would stay in NZ because they had no place else to go. Details to be worked out …
  
  Also FWIW once upon a time a new medic emerged from house officer year and could nail up the plate to become a GP. GP is now treated like other specialties with a few years of postgrad.

    Interesting proposal, Ian. Worth considering but our current one of attracting UK docs sick of the NHS works pretty well. Make that work better before your barefoot idea perhaps? Having seen two stories recently about a South African and a Pom going home because of immigration bureaucracy delays here implies Kris Faafoi had his mind elsewhere.

      Remember how Otaki lost a very good GP who wanted to buy into the practice a year or so ago but couldn’t. None of the officials or Ministers saw any need to sort things out. That story has been repeated throughout the health system. What has changed? Or is that only something a change of government will fix?

      Not “barefoot” – perhaps “one-legged”. eg if the geriatrics bit was left out it just means this medic could not treat old folk. No suggestion that the standard of training for the other stuff should be any different to the what the full-noise folk get.

    Good idea about not every speck of training for all doctors. Suggest pass it on to the Health spox.
    
    Also it is a lot cheaper for us to import doctors, even if making it easier for them to come and get the additional ticks on boxes needed. New Zealand is not the most obvious country for them to immigrate to these days, but financial and other support is cheaper than training our own then losing them.

    When I was living in Bangkok I came into contact with a number of specialists.
    A neurologist who treated my epilepsy was educated in Wisconsin. I saw a dermatologist who had been to university in Ireland and I had a hip replacement by an orthopedic surgeon trained in Bangkok.
    The latter was about 60 at the time. The old bugger is still at it, twenty years later. He made a pretty good job of my hip, which is still going.

  The professional accreditation bodies for doctors cover both Australia and New Zealand which makes it very easy for NZ drs to work in Oz. Drs in Oz earn 2+ times what they do in NZ. Young drs in particular have the flexibility to move to Oz so training more of them doesn’t achieve much. The drs that work in nz are a mix of locally trained drs who stay for family reasons and western trained drs who come here for the novelty. Until there is some degree of pay parity with Oz training more drs will help them more than it helps us.

      The Americans like to have a bit of third world experience on their CV, particularly if they have an interest in moving into management. Apparently NZ is close enough and they like that we speak english. Of course the recent border restrictions has stemmed the flow and without as many foreign drs we are now 50% understaffed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued advice for those who want to engage in sexual activity in the age of Monkeypox. The guidance is contained in a document called Social Gatherings, Safer Sex and Monkeypox. Breitbart has more.

The CDC set out in its two-page release the death rate of monkeypox is thought to be one percent, but “possibly” higher in immunocompromised individuals, and therefore has a list of warnings, cautions, guidance and associated points to be taken into consideration by anyone considering spending time with another.

Some of the guidance includes masturbating at least six feet away from a partner, avoiding kissing, having virtual sex, and “having sex with your clothes on or covering areas where rash or sores are present”.

Surprisingly poor sportsmanship displayed by the Blues crowd at times but I was embarrassed by a few very poor winners amongst the Crusaders fans. It was ugly and frankly a little pathetic.   Once a solo parent has an assured income from the government they are more attractive to freeloaders with alcohol/ drug/gambling problems.

‘WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. Capitol Police said Friday that officers arrested seven unauthorized people in a congressional office building Thursday night and charged them with unlawful entry.

The people identified themselves as being affiliated with CBS’ “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

Another person familiar with the matter provided the AP with a list of nine people who had been stopped by Capitol Police. They included several producers, along with Robert Smigel, the voice behind Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.

The two people who spoke with the AP could not discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity’.

  You’re right. I read the news item earlier on Stuff and puzzled at why they said BRIDGES in 2020 had a % lead of vote of 4% yet no mention of the lead current status over same Labour candidate TINETTI.
  Well, that’s because it is 31.12%.
  I know it’s a by-election, but that is still a very significant number before finals are counted when it will probably rise further.

So, why are the med schools still turning away some of New Zealands brightest students?

So labour are directly causing this shortage, and future shortages.

    A couple of days ago as we were going along an on ramp we passed a car upside down on fire on the SW motorway.
    There shouldn’t be any accident on the Mangere Bridge, but there you are. Three lanes dead straight at that location.
    I seen people swerve across several lanes to get off at the Onehunga exit.

    On most roads, lanes can’t be separated as the roads aren’t wide enough. Even now on some of the roads with median barriers, if a car breaks down or a truck has to pull over for a blown tyre, the lane is fully blocked.

  The crash was on a bend. Most likely scenario is the van took the corner too fast and drifted into the path of the truck.
  
  My partner and I do many road trips. We frequently remind each other of the golden rule. “Stay on your side of the road.” And before you overtake, are you absolutely sure there is enough road? If not be patient.
  
  Unfortunately, New Zealand roads can be unforgiving of errors, and we are all fallible.

    My practise on coutry roads is to drive on the left ignoring white lines that direct you to the centre. The most dangerous thing on the road is the idiot coming towards you. I see the drivers hugging the centre line and wonder how long before they meet each other there.

    A similar type accident happened on the Taupo Tokoroa stretch of SH1 a while ago. Killed the whole family plus the unfortunate coming the other way.
    The van had bald tyres, no WoF/ reg, seatbelts weren’t being worn, drive had no license, drugs in her system and not much sleep the night before. But according to the powers to be, the road was at fault.
    What is the likelihood this will be a similar type event?

    Given the number of crashes in NZ involving trucks a more like scenario is that (a) the truck was speeding and (b) the driver was fatigued.

Everybody should read this article about the wrongful conviction of Alan Hall, and then realise that:

1. The Police refusing to meet their disclosure obligations (at the most basic levels) remains the biggest problem in the justice system today, including being the main reason for most of the delays; and
2. The attitude of the prosecution services (Police, Crown, Crown Law, MoJ) has not changed in any way: and
3. We only know about the wrongful convictions of people who have fought, generally with the assistance of their families. We know nothing about the wrongful convictions of those who have just given up; and
4. The Police are not obliged to do anything about their malfeasance.

      Firstly, there are quite stringent mechanisms applied through the IPCA and the courts. Secondly, there is a very high public and media interest in the work of the police.
      These factors do not typically apply to other public agencies and, if they do apply, do not garner the same level of scrutiny. Plenty of state (and civil) institutions are able to do damage over years, even decades, without effective control. Think of boarding schools, psychiatric hospitals or prisons, for a few examples.

Here was me all these years thinking it was a symbol of the authority of the crown , not at all odd as there’s a whopping great crown on top of said mace.

And they talk about ‘misinformation”.

Is there a danger that we are getting bogged down with the negatives without thinking about other alternatives.
Something to slow down ill considered legislation and ensue better understanding by the public of the effects a bill.

  There a plusses and minuses. Geoffrey Palmer called it the ‘fastest law in the west’, which some thought was okay when he and his mate Roger Douglas were making changes. And while there are benefits from a government being able to act decisively, there are also drawbacks, not the least of them being that parliaments composed mainly of lawyers always seem to think changing law is the right thing to do in response to any perceived problem.

Looks like NZTA is reviewing speed limits. This is probably justified as they have been frozen for 20 years.

The article I saw yesterday worryingly reported that they were considering linking fines to incomes. Idiotic. Apart from the high administration costs, it would let gang members aka beneficiaries off with trivial fines for dangerous driving.

FWIW these are the changes I would make.

Increase the speed limit on motorways to 120 but with a $300 fine for not keeping left unless passing. This is applied in most Australian states and Germany and it makes a huge difference to the safety of motorways.

I would then have the following regime.

Exceeding the limit by 1 – 10 kmh. $40 fine and 10 demerit points.

11 – 20 kmh. $100 fine and 30 demerit points.

21 – 30 kmh. $500 fine and 50 demerit points.

31 – 40 kmh. $1000 fine and 80 demerit points.

These changes would heavily skew higher penalties to excessive speeding.

Over 40 kmh. $3000 fine. Loss of licence for 12 months.

The final change I would make would be controversial. However it is grounded in reality. In most New Zealand passing lanes, you cannot pass a truck traveling at 90 kmh without exceeding 100 kmh. With a 10 kmh speed differential you will run out of passing lane. The best case scenario is that one car manages to pass with any following cars running out of lane, and risk colliding with the truck or with oncoming traffic.

I would therefore see the law changed to provide for an overtaking vehicle in a dedicated passing lane to overtake at up to 130 kmh provided that the vehicle does not exceed 100 kmh for more than 15 seconds. The police would still be able to issue an infringement notice if the overtaking was deemed dangerous, eg heavy rain, fog, etc.

Yes this would be controversial, but it would reflect what happens in the real world. Laws that bear no resemblance to reality are a waste of time.

        On a recent road trip, I was about to overtake a truck on a passing lane. I would have been doing about 125 when I passed the truck before slowing back down to 100. Just as I hit the accelerator, my radar detector went off. I eased off the gas and tucked in behind the truck.
        
        Sure enough, their was a police car with his radar on, right at the end of the passing lane. It is this type of idiocy that makes me lose respect for traffic police.

I wonder how many millions of dollars have been taken from the pockets of NZ families and given to the makers and crew of the movies ‘Whina’ and ‘Far North’ to keep them subsidised and shielded from market forces – unlike almost every other enterprise in the nation.

Movies , I might add, that most NZers will never watch.

It’s the hypocrisy of lefties that sickens me the most. On one hand they say that “any business that cannot pay a living wage doesn’t deserve to exist….” but on the other hand they happily support the taxpayer subsidisation of businesses that they personally support arguing that they are a special case.

Seems the Labour plan is to let the low grade MP’s fall away like a burning limb on a tree, lie about the reason for the results while distancing the head of Marketing from any nativity and creating pure fantasy around her, again. The poor, over worked, ill looking, dismal failure…..
