Heather du Plessis-Allan puts the boot into Nanaia Mahuta:

Can we all accept now that Nanaia Mahuta is not great at her job?

It is astounding that she hasn’t once spoken to our ambassador in Russia since the start of the invasion.

Never mind the fact that – apart from one letter – she also hasn’t been in contact with our diplomats in the Solomons since its pact with China.

That’s pretty bad as well.

But not speaking to our woman in Russia is astounding given the magnitude of the invasion of Ukraine and the impact it’s having on everything from food prices, fuel prices, the security of Europe through to the possibility it emboldens China.

If that’s not enough to get the Foreign Affairs Minister on the phone, god only knows what is.

Frankly, the fact that Nanaia is not up to the job will not surprise many people.

She’s been in parliament for 26 years but what has she achieved?

Not a lot.

And this term might end and still the answer will likely be ‘not a lot’.

It’s hard not to disagree with HDPA’s assessment of the Foreign Minister, who has also attracted criticism from her predecessor Winston Peters, and National’s Foreign Affairs spokesman Gerry Brownlee.

This is a major failure by Minister Mahuta, and even if the media won’t talk about allegations of conflicts of interest involving Mahuta and her whanau, her competence for the role of Foreign Minister is being openly questioned. That doesn’t bode well for her, or for the Prime Minister.

  Nanaia was once quoted that her greatest achievement in politics was that she was the first MP to wear a moko kauae.
  
  This was after 21 years in Parliament.

      On a related note I reckon the Nats have got the support for Maorification all wrong. In focus groups or phone polls citizens are going to agree to loaded questions. Its like asking a bloke if hes beating his wife. If he is he will answer no.
      IMHO if the Nats came out strongly against Maorification and said it wont happen and they will repeal all legislation and regulation that grants any special rights to Maori including scrapping the Maori seats their support would sky rocket. the “quiet Kiwi” would speak up.

      Same here, Benedict. There are too many articles – sermons in some cases – where we are told to “adopt Maori practices” and “turn to Maori culture to fix our problems”. The inference being that apparently my own values and culture are inferior.

      Noble has two meanings: one to do with “belonging by rank, title, or birth to the aristocracy” and the other to do with “having or showing fine personal qualities or high moral principles”.
      
      Quite a convenient word really, as it means two things that are not at all necessarily aligned. Very useful for obfuscation.

        Etymologically, those two definitions align perfectly well. Aristocracy essentially means “rule by the best.” In its original intent and in practice, the best people (i.e. the wisest, most noble people, with the most foresight and moral integrity) ended up ruling everyone else, which in theory is a far better system than democracy. However, as with most things over time, it has degenerated to signify rule by the worst, in the sense that some of the worst people end up with an ability to retain power as a small group, simply by accumulating vast wealth.
        
        The difference between aristocracies comes when the different groups have differing capacities. Not all groups of aristocrats are equal. For instance, being a pre-colonial Maori aristocrat was a very different thing than being an aristocrat in Republican Roman, particularly given that Rome in 100BC was far more advanced that Maori society was even in 1750AD.

  Every time you go for a dump you can think of Mahuta & her greed.
  Once you have your dump
  YOU BREATHE IN DEEPLY through your nose
  SMELL THE STENCH AND CORRUPTION that is 3 waters
  THINK OF MAHUTA
  SCRUNCH YOUR NOSE A Bit
  YOU THEN BREATHE OUT
  
  The kicker here is that you get to have one over MAHUTA by controlling when you flush the toilet.
  Mahuta can’t clip the ticket and get her co-governance fees until you flush the toilet. You’re in complete control, you decide when the toilet is flushed, so even though the victory is very small and temporary, the longer you can hold off flushing the toilet, the longer you can delay Mahuta from getting her co-governance fees. The BOTTOM line is Mahuta doesn’t get a penny if you don’t flush the toilet. The satisfaction of denying her money even for a small amount of time should be worth it.
  
  So once you’ve done your business, look at your dump for the final time.
  BREATHE IN deeply through your nose
  THINK OF MAHUTA
  Breathe Out
  Repeat the cycle as often as you feel able.
  Then Flush when you’re ready to end your protest.
  
  You haven’t beaten Mahuta, she still gets her money in Co-governance fees when the toilet’s flushed, but you’ve had a small mental victory through protest.
  Then wash your hands (recommended). More co-governance fees to be paid but that’s for another story.

  I heard that bag of wind Shane Jones speaking with Toxic Tova this morning. Say what you like about Jones, but he had some valid points about Mahuta & the government’s foreign policy (or lack of) towards the Pacific Islands & China’s actions in the Pacific. Ardern’s & Mahuta’s lack of action contrasts with the Pacific Teset policy of that other wind bag Peters. The reality we didn’t follow through with the policy after 2017.
  
  Roll on 3 years, it was considered a joke in 2020 when Ardern gave Mahuta the Foreign Affairs portfolio as a pay off to the Labour Maori caucus. At the time the point was made, with global lockdowns what damage could Mahuta do? Well now we know. In matters relating to foreign affairs (which are vially important to NZ because of the county’s need for foreign trade), Mahuta has dropped the ball. This is because she is too busy giving taxpayer/ratepayer assets to her cousins in the guise of Three Waters Reform.
  
  This govt’s handling of foreign affairs & trade is so poor Ardern is off peddling NZ beef on talk shows in NZ with her fan club. FFS, if this the best the govt can do in the middle of a series of international crises, I am left shaking my head and saying “God help seeus, if you can, because we can’t seem to help ourselves.”

  Lets be fair to Mahuta and examine why she is in Parliament in the first place, which states in many ways what is expected of her
  – at 26 years old, after completing her Masters the year before she was entered Parliament
  – she lost the seat she was campaigning for but got in at number 8 on the party list
  
  Asking why she was ranked so highly for someone who had only recently joined the party leads to either tokenism or gaining favor with the Māori monarch?
  
  From their what has she done? Spoke out against the Foreshore and Seabed Act, but didn’t have the will to give up a cushy job where for the last 8 years nothing had been expected of her. Maybe the prospect of a Cabinet position along with the jump in salary was enough to get her to fall into line – clearly someone who has strong convictions.
  
  She probably loved the years in opposition with even less required of her – no doubt she was “encouraged” to run for leader to show the diversity of the party.
  
  And then when Labour “won” power again in 2017, you surely would have expected a heavy hitter who had been around for 21 years at that point would be given senior portfolios – well she picked up Local Government again where she had clearly done nothing last time she had it and of course Maori Affairs.
  
  So you can only conclude that the fault here clearly lies at the feet of Ardern – she gave someone with NO CAPABILITY AND DRIVE one of the most significant portfolios one can have. Would you be angry at the person who started as an accounts clerk (who got the role because their dad played gold with the CEO), who rose over 20 years to the role of accountants administrator the CFO role? Or the person who gave them the role?
  
  Of course she could have and should have said no – but again when you are clearly that incapable, she likely couldn’t say no.

And Nanaia has only managed a Zoom call. Didn’t anyone see the danger signs with a Chinese Foreign Minister doing a Pacific visit?   He couldn’t bring himself to agree that Mahuta was the govt’s worst minister, but he acknowledged the govt had ministers who were worse than Mahuta.
  
  It was an excellent opportunity to put someone of Tame’s mana to the test and discover who he believes is utterly useless within Cindy’s cabinet…

  It’s quite simple really. If it does not progress her Maori agenda, she has no interest.
  Her promotion to this role is a status appointment for the Maori caucus, she has no interest in foreign affairs, or even in promoting New Zealand as a trading nation.
  She is a disgrace and an embarrassment to the country.
  Self-interest seems to be her only benchmark, thank goodness sense will prevail at the next election.

    You obviously missed the bit about Ukrainian National Army bombarding the Donbas and killing some 14,000 civilians.
    Putin had signaled for a number of years regarding the failure of Ukraine to meet its commitment under the 2014 Minsk agreement to leave the Donbas alone.
    
    Also missing from the western Press is the fact that Ukrainian Army had assembled 100,000 plus troops on the border of the Donbas intending to shell the shit out of them and then “”invade””.
    
    IT could be said that is why the Russians headed for Kiev, to reduce troop density in the east.
    
    As to why the Russians didnt go back to Russia…sigh…some history reading would be good. They are ethnic Russians living in the Donbas region otherwise Ukrainians.

No matter how Hosking worded the question Orr would not agree or admit that the ever growing New Zealand inflation is mainly due to the rampant , ill conceived and often valueless spending of the Government.

But printing money never ends well unless there is an equal lift in production to cover the demand from “bad money”.     I have difficulties believing that inflation is only 6.7%. Lucky enough not to be renting or have a mortgage or a petrol car but our expenses have gone up far more than 6.7%.
    
    You only have to look at the price of groceries to realize that.

    (armour/optics/weapons/ammo), crashes his truck near the school, has shoot out with cops but manages to enter an unlocked school that he hadn’t planned on going to anyway, shoots the school liaison officer, barricades himself inside, executes 19 kids and 2 teachers, and is finally taken out by border patrol officer.

Last night we were phoned by a woman saying she was conducting a survey on behalf of the Charities Commission.
The questions were to find out what sort of charities we would be most likely to support financially. The Commission would then pass on this information to the appropriate organisations to target us for donations.
Anyone else had this call?
Is it the role of the Charities Commission to contract cold callers to undertake surveys about organisations to which we might donate cash?
And then facilitate this?
We thought it was a scam and ended the call.

Annoys and concerns me that MSM is giving Orr and the Reserve Bank and Robertson and his Government a total free ride on inflation.

Orr has one task – keep inflation inside the 0 to 3% range. He has failed and failed spectacularly. Inflation is more like 7 – 8%. Too late to apply the handbrake and too much stimulation makes him to blame. Wasting time and money on useless branding/image nonsense shows he is unfit for the task.

Robertson had one main task. Support the Reserve Bank’s effort to keep inflation down. A restrained budget would have been the correct and mature action. Instead he was reckless and continues to act as though he has no responsibility over inflation.

Inflation is the cancer of the economy. We have been shafted by incompetence……. again.

I remember when

I don’t see a lot of news items questioning how much various government policies have at least some responsibility for price rises in supermarkets.
Should this be the start point.
How much of the price rise is the result of worker visa delays that will be fixed after of the short-term outcome has happened.
How much is the result of increased transport costs, driver shortages, port congestion, ever increasing administration costs, wage increases, staff shortages. All of which government action has affected.
What are we paying to counter the cost of shoplifting exacerbated by lack of police response.

Here’s some analysis of a recent, and apparently well designed NHI study: the long and short of “long covid”. This study recorded individual health characteristics prior to Covid-19 infection.

Of the PASC (post-acute sequelae of covid) group, 48% had previously diagnosed mental health issues. 37.5% had anxiety disorder. 80%-90% had depression. 64.4% were female.

I got a lot of downticks the other day for daring to suggest that a reasonable component of inflation is imported.

For the record, I think it is probably 50/50 with respect to government/RB action vs imported inflation that we can’t control.

It may be that a lot of people aren’t involved in importing equipment for sale as we are. We get to see incredible price increases in terms of freight and multiple and substantial price increases for the goods we import that have to be passed on to our customers.

That is why I suggested that the current inflation target of 0-3% is unrealistic, likely unachievable, and likely to put the economy into recession if it is pursued by the RB.

I think they should have a higher target (say 2-5%) that allows them to look through the imported component that the RB can’t do anything about anyway, and focus on the government component which can be controlled.

The other thing the government needs to do to bring inflation under control is to open up the job market a lot more to people overseas so that the pressure on wages can be reduced, and businesses can get the skills they need to run their businesses.

      The issue is a bit different in the current environment though. The unusual feature this time around is that governments everywhere have been doing exactly the same thing.
      
      That is what is making inflation so insidious this time around.
      
      Not only are we reaping the effects of our own government’s stimulatory policies, but also the stimulatory policies of nearly every country in the world.
      
      Our RB can do something about the inflation our own government generates. But it can’t do much about inflation created by other governments that gets passed on to us.

  That has inflationary consequences. You increase population growth, you need schools, houses, infrastructure…
  
  I agree there is no choice in the medium term. But long term New Zealand needs to solve its worsening inter-generational problem of unemployable people. We have BOTH a chronic labour shortage AND 350,000 working age people on benefits! About 11 percent of the workforce. Of these, 77,000 have a disability. That leaves 270,000 adult New Zealanders who are capable of employment but choose not to.

    If the New Zealand government were smart then it would launch a massive push to rooftop solar energy and electric vehicles.
    
    Why? Because without any meaningful domestic oil production our balance of payments is crippled by what we pay other countries for energy. We import about 60 million barrels (equiv) pa. At US$100 a barrel, plus shipping costs etc, that’s about NZ$10 billion pa that NZ has to earn just so we can pay it to others overseas.
    
    Not too mention the strategic value of loosening our dependence/vulnerability on other countries for energy.
    
    I could argue a case for a Government that committed, say, NZ$5 billion for a big solar+EV programme in a bid to reduce our oil imports by at least 20%. If it were me I’d structure it in a similar way to the Key National Government’s fibre-to-the-home initiative.

    Yes this is a tragedy however you don’t use a 0.001% occurrence is an argument for sweeping law changes. Auckland is a case in point – ask any front line police officer if they feel safer re guns now versus before our change in firearm regulations.

  I first went to PNG in the 60’s when Oz ran the place and I enjoyed it. The Solomon Is were the British Solomon Is Protectorate and Vanuatu was the Condominiom of the New Hebrides , co governed by Britain and France.
  
  All were reasonably well run. Fast forward to the 80’s and they were now all Independent. On the down ward slide and full of graft and corruption.
  
  PNG is now a Hazardous Deployment in the Diplomatic Service and Solomons not much better.

Popped into New World at New Brighton last night to buy some wine. That was a mistake I will not repeat.

Guy behind me in the check out line decided to have a go at me. He was clearly on meth – his wide staring eyes were a give away. Racist, incoherent abuse, unprovoked. I told him to back off. He followed me out to my car, but I made my get away 🙂

Anyway lesson learned. Don’t shop in the shit hole suburbs of Christchurch, especially at night.

  Although it does recall another story: Why do you need two people to shop at Pak ‘n Save in Rotorua? One to do the shopping and one to stay in the car to prevent it being stolen.

  New Brighton is certainly not a place where you want to stand out in the crowd. I stay away as much as possible.
  
  The last time I was there was as part of the farmy army helping clear up after the EQ. The entitlement of many of the people was astounding, demanding that the volunteers come and sort out some problem for them and many not even lifting a finger for themselves.
  
  One woman tried driving her car out of her driveway and crunched her ridiculously low front bumper. She started screaming at the volunteers that it was their fault for not clearing her drive properly and they’d all have to pay.
  
  Another angrily demanded that some volunteers cleared her driveway immediately because she was having a party and needed somewhere for her friends to park.
  
  When someone offered her a shovel she let out a torrent of abuse along the lines of “Fuck off. It’s not my job to fix this. It’s you volunteer’s job.”
  
  I don’t know why you live out that way when you’re clearly a guy with intelligence, earning power and options.

How normal is this? My son is renting a flat, and, they have to pay the landlord $200 if one of the flatmates moves out and they get a new flatmate?

The landlord says the insurance doesn’t cover them unless the people in the flat are named on the register, and , there is a $200 admin fee to change a name.

  Back in London when we were there in 1972,3 the landlords couldn’t put up the rent at our mate’s flat unless the tenants changed. Some law that dated back years that only applied to tenancies at that date.
  In my mate’s case it was one flat in a block owned by a faceless corporate. Over the years as each occupant came and went the owners were never informed so the rent didn’t budge. They paid a rent that hadn’t gone up for 20-30yrs.

    I don’t know if my son’s situation is normal. In my day, the person who signed the rental agreement is the authority of who lives in the house. Now, landlords are asking parents to sign rental agreements for their adult children, and leads to the situation I described above.

      Parents can decline to act as guarantor. Of course the offspring probably won’t be accepted as tenants.
      
      In the past guarantors were seldom requested unless the potential tenants had little or no rental history. There is a lot more risk now due to new rules since, oh, about September 2017.

  Surfing – we live in times where Landlords are the whipping boys for renters, people struggling to buy their own home, and the left who see them as rich pricks.
  
  I have been on both sides of this coin. Renting is a commercial transaction, rent is paid for the use of the property. It is additional work for the landlord when tenants change in a property. If the paperwork isn’t up to scratch or inspections done properly then that’s all on the landlord! If done properly that will mean vetting the incoming tenant, meeting to sign paperwork, final inspection for departing tenant and incoming tenant initial inspection. A bit more than just crossing out a name and putting the new name on the page.
  
  Some flats have a revolving door of tenants, which increases the workload on a landlord. It is my view that a fee to recompense this is not unreasonable.

These light sentences are just a joke and must be coming from a recommendation higher up such as Kelvin Davis that the Govt wants fewer people in jail. The judge believes telling an addict not to consume drugs and alcohol will stop him, hmmm not sure that will work.

“But I am satisfied that the offending was largely driven by your addiction.” Judge Field noted the man was making a genuine effort to rehabilitate himself. “The addiction you continue to fight is not an overnight process.” If warranted a maximum sentence of nine years’ imprisonment could have been applied but the judge instead sentenced him to six months of community detention and 12 months of intensive supervision. He was ordered to not consume any drugs and alcohol.”

  When I lived in Ngaio a couple of guys opened a bottle store near the bottom of the gorge.
  About two minutes later the place was ram raided. I went passed on my way to work one morning and the front was smashed in when the poor buggers surveying the damage.
  It’s quiet down there in the dead of the night and handy to the motorways.
  They patched it up, put in some bollards and as far as I know there were no more problems.
  That was 20-30yrs ago.

  Almost 15 years to the day that Helen Clark’s government passed the Anti-smacking Bill. Opposed by a significant majority of the population. Driven by her Socialist values that the state knows best, certainly better than parents, this childless woman ordained that physical discipline was no longer to be part of the parental toolkit.
  
  Sure many parents and particularly well educated ones are able to mostly manage with non-physical discipline. But that doesn’t mean that approach results in better outcomes for the child and ultimately society.
  
  Helen’s legacy is being seen clearly in NZ today. More unmanageable children in schools, destroying teachers morale and taking their focus off academic education. Children stealing cars and ram raiding shops. A general lack of respect for authority amongst the generations that have grown up without boundaries.
  
  Did it fix or reduce abuse? No, of course not. The reality is that true discipline is centred in a parents love for their children and a desire to see them enjoy a prosperous life. Whereas abuse occurs in the absence of love. Two opposite sides of the see-saw. It was a most audacious lie to equate them as one and the same.
  
  Having made such a destructive contribution to our country, Helen is now trying to make an even bigger contribution on the world stage. Her worship of her own intellectual superiority leaves no room for God. Thus her works are godless, and their true value becomes increasingly evident with the passage of time.
  
  We are generally proud of kiwis punching above their weight, but in Clark’s case she is a global embarrassment.

    People who can’t be bothered do my head in. I detest laziness. The higher up the pole you are, the more you can do, and that’s a privilege. What a thrill to be able to make a difference, to change a course, to be hungry, to grasp the detail, to immerse yourself into something you can affect and improve.
    
    And yet look at them.
    
    Clare Curran, hopeless and gone. David Clark was sacked for being an idiot. Kris Faafoi is asleep at the wheel and desperate to get out. Phil Twyford is an abject failure. Poto Williams is a disgrace hiding behind a lack of interest and Mahuta-type excuses about operational matters. Mahuta herself is too lazy and disinterested to even pick up a phone.
    
    For those of us who long for better, this is a shabby and incompetent let down. Being useless is one thing, but being lazy and useless is the ultimate crime.

    Exactly.
    The recent shooting in Texas was a gun free zone, I think. If only the schools had armed security.
    Another way is use volunteers – retired defence people, Veterans. I’m sure many guys that have done their Tours of Duty and would be happy to do it. Remember, unlike cops, these guys have faced the shit full on. Quite easy to take out someone even hand to hand.

    With a bit of researching I think they both had Indian parents. And Irish PM (2017-2020) had an Indian born dad:
    
    Sajid Javid, born 1969 has four brothers, one born in 1965, making it likely that his mother and father were born before the partitioning of india in 1947 and so making it likely that his parents were at least briefly Indians.
    
    Sadiq Khan’s parents were indians too, looks like they were both born before the partitioning of india given he, born 1970, is 5th of 8 kids: (from wikipedia):

Government spending as a percentage of GDP is one of the most important metrics available, in assessing government performance.

35% of GDP in government spending seems to be optimal – it’s big enough to fund great health and education, but not so big to crowd out the private sector investment.

How is Labour doing?

2017 – 35.6%
2022 – 43.6%

The forecasts for future years show spending magically falling back to 35%.

If Labour / Greens win the next election, my forecast would be that government spending as a percentage of GDP will rise to over 50%.

At this point the economy will be completely stuffed.

    Most of the MSM reporters are kids, with no technical financial or economics knowledge, and virtually zero life experience.
    
    The growth in the relative size of the State means that productivity in the future will be seriously impaired. The composition of GDP is as important as its quantum.
    
    For example, exports are more important than the relative size to GDP would immediately appear to indicate, because they determine our ability to import. This is why the government mandated vandalism with respect to tourism is so dangerous to our financial futures.
    
    No one is discussing these considerations, but they are very important to the future economic prospects of the economy.
    
    The economic vandalism being conducted by our government at present is not acknowledged by the media at all. This is probably simply because they don’t understand economics.
    
    This widespread ignorance could lead to our financial ruin.
    
    I’m not a huge fan of Mr Luxon, but he appears to be our only hope. If he does make it, I hope he reforms the media in New Zealand. Privatise the lot. It will at least make me feel better if I’m not paying these clowns’ salaries.

A DOC staff member urged (told) him to return it to the sea.
So the sea snake was going to die because (a) that’s what would have happened if it was returned to the sea, or, (b) DOC would have collected it and had it killed.

The shooting of children is tragic and she is blathering over something which she has done that has helped force guns into the arms of 501’s and the rampant gun violence problem in NZ
