Today is the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea.
No New Zealand forces were involved directly, but the naval battle stymied Japanese plans to seize Port Moresby in Papua through a naval assault, and paved the way for the US attack in the Solomon Islands, stopping the Japanese plans to sever the sea communications between the US and Australasia.
The battle also marked the first battle between aircraft carrier fleets, with one of the ships sighted or fired directly upon by enemy ships. The battle was a tactical loss for the US Navy, with one aircraft carrier sunk and one damaged against two Japanese carriers damaged. Strategically, the battle’s significance lay in its impact on the subsequent Battle of Midway: the two damaged Japanese carriers could not be repaired in time, whereas the damaged USS Yorktown was able to participate.

      Yes we know that, I mentioned the other day about having anxiety, it was in reference to someone else but I put my experience out there, something people with anxiety find hard to do.   The Yorktown staggered into Pearl and the Yard said 3 months. Chester Nimitz told them 3 days and she was ready.
  
  Saw a programme on Midway and it was a near run thing and the Yanks almost lost. However in the space of about 15 mins the balance changed and 4 x Japanese Fleet Carriers were lost. It was then that the Japanese lost the Pacific War.
  
  By 1944 the US had 100 carriers in the Pacific. Not Fleet Carriers but the Jeep Carriers, a Merchant hull with a Flat Top.

    Carrier building was an example of how American industrial power proved the dominant factor in World War 2.
    
    Henry Kaiser, who with John McCrone led the Liberty ship cargo vessel building programme, came up with the concept of “jeep carriers,” and appealed directly to President Roosevelt to overcome bureaucrats.
    
    Kaiser built 53 “jeep carriers”, or Casablanca-class escort carriers, in 13 months from April 1943. Each carried 28 aircraft and were faster than earlier escort carriers – they could reach 20 knots. They carried a third of the number of aircraft as the big fleet carriers, and were two-thirds as fast.
    
    These followed America’s earlier conversion of 45 cargo ships
    into escort carriers, 34 of which were transferred to the Royal Navy.

  WTF is a ‘tactical loss for the US Navy’? That’s like saying the Falklands War was a tactical loss for the Royal Navy, because they lost more ships than the Argentinians.
  
  The Battle of the Coral Sea stopped the Japanese from achieving their objective of capturing Port Moresby, which could then be used as a springboard to attack or isolate Australia. It was therefore an American victory.
  
  I suggest you stick with your silly days theme, and leave military history alone. Every time you comment on it, you stuff it up.

      Bit like the Battle of Jutland, the great naval battle of World War 1 in which the battlecruiser HMS New Zealand took part.
      
      The British fleet lost slightly more ships and men than the Germans, but it kept the German fleet bottled up and the blockade of Germany in place.
      
      The Battle of Jutland is commemorated in names of streets and reserves up and down New Zealand, but the Woke mouthpiece, Stuff, seems to be fanning the fire to burn off “Jutland” and other Western and colonial history names and replace them with Maori names. The English word “street” to remain, of course.

      They did; they controlled most of China but needed another decade to get it to be useful asset. The raw resources their Empire commanded were immense.
      
      Japan itself, of course, was highly productive (so I understand where you’re coming from). Innovation? Mixed bag. They had some good ideas but not as good as the Americans.

      That has been my exact experience. It has been several women managers who have behaved terribly towards me and did everything they could to trash my career and my professional reputation, as well as collude for an outcome.
      
      I have never had one bad male manager. They are too scared to target women for fear of being accused of something. But also they don’t seem to be concerned with the petty vindictiveness some women display and inflict on other women.

  NMTB, the mortgage crisis is just beginning and it won’t be a pretty sight. Banks are reluctant to foreclose a property but they are a business, albeit in ANZ’s case a strangely woke one which instructs big customers to tow the environmental line or they will be terminated. Anyway this year will be hugely problematic for mortgaged home owners.

      And when they’ve spent all the money they’ve taken off us, they carry on spending anyway, knowing the Central Bank will bail them out by creating new money out of thin air (inflation). Central bankers call it Quantitative Easing — words chosen to obscure the real harm done by “printing new money”.
      
      So the govt takes your wealth either (1) before it reaches your hands on payday (taxation) or (2) inflating away the value of whatever money you can hold on to.

  When a government doesn’t present its policy on something as fundamental as co governance at an election but indeed seeks to hide it and when that government further seek to suppress discussion of the policy by bribing the fourth estate into silence or promotion of it, then I think they have moved into coup d’état territory. If the government doesn’t accept the sovereignty of the crown and believe it only to be assumed then they literally don’t believe in their own legitimacy surely as they are supposed to be Her Majesty’s government. So in my mind we have a government attempting to overthrow the crowns constitutional position hide it from the citizens of NZ and make sure nobody talks about until it’s completed.     As for a coup d’état, that may prove difficult because this Govt’s Storm Troopers (Maori Gangs) are the ones with the guns. This Govt took all law-abiding citizens’ guns that would have been useful in any coup d’état and, IMO, Cindy knew this.

In the “you’ve got to be joking” category the leader of the Maori party says that he’d be prepared to form a government with ACT and National if they move to a Treaty-centered policy. What planet is this man on? So, if ACT becomes a race-based party the Maori party will join it in government? Part of the reason why ACT and National are ahead of Labour etc is because they are opposed to racism!

  It’d be on his terms though, which would mean his votes are worth the same as the whole rest of the others, with him having veto over all decisions.
  
  If Luxon and Seymour were to say: “we are already Treaty-centred. We believe in every vote being equal, and that we live in a blended society where everyone can exercise their cultural freedom within the over arching constraints of the law”, the response to that would be interesting.

    To be fair, if you go in knowing the bias, there is some good content in there – sports coverage can be good and the investigative journalism is still up there with the best – probably one of the few UK papers (along with the Financial Times) doing strong work in the investigative journalism space. Definitely a left wing lens though.
    
    To be fair, most media have a bias.
    
    When I lived over in the UK, every sunday I used to read the observer and sunday times. Between the two, you generally got a reasonably good overview of what had actually happened on any story. Times gave a centre right / right view and the observer was a centre left / left view (sometimes way, way left!). By reading both, you could sort of figure out what the story actually was without the political bias. Really opened your eyes to how the same event could be spun depending on the politics
    
    Those sunday papers are one of the few things I miss about living over in the UK and Ireland. Still remember the ink on the fingers after reading them!

It’s clear that Nanaia Mahuta regards Three Waters and its related organisations as her personal fiefdom, and that nepotism is rife. There is the perception of some pretty notable conflicts of interest, which should be investigated. Note that the Cabinet Manual dictates that even the perception of a conflict of interest is unacceptable.

The working group also recommended, & Cabinet agreed, to entrench the 3W Act, meaning that it will require a 75% vote in Parliament to amend or repeal, making it v difficult to make any changes to it. You don’t get an entrenched Bill of Rights but they will try it on here ..

The Labour Government plans to entrench Three Waters in legislation. Let that sink in for a moment.

When legislation is entrenched, it can only be reformed or repealed by a 75% super-majority in Parliament. That means National and Act would have to control 3/4’s of the seats in Parliament to overturn Three Waters. So it is Labour’s intention, especially the intention of Jacinda Ardern, Grant Robertson and Nanaia Mahuta to impose Three Waters on us in perpetuity.

Not only is the Three Waters proposal flawed, but it is anti-democratic as well. Let’s make sure it doesn’t happen.

    Yes, they can do it, but it’s no big deal.
    The sections of current acts that entrench sensitive sections (such as in the electoral act) are not themselves entrenched. So to change an entrenched measure only really requires a simple majority in the house of representatives.
    It’s symbolic. No parliament can make anything truly entrenched.

1% effectiveness after a week. Pfizer’s own conclusion in it’s own formerly suppressed literature…

  I agree with your comment about medics who mindlessly cheerlead for pharma – but that isnt all medics! This plandemic ended the sovereignty of Drs deciding what was right for their patients.
  
  While I understand your stance on Pregnant woman, they were also advised they were higher risk of severe Covid outcomes. Fear is a terrific motivator and has the added effect of shutting down the thinking process.

So, Ann Tolley sold ratepayer housing assets valued at 42 million dollars for just 17 million dollars.

Why? Tolley says….
“price was mitigated by the fact the villages were going to a community housing provider”

This is disgusting. They have increased rates 20% a year for 3 consecutive years, and they should have sold them for what they were worth!! Council is not a charity.

Mahuta , Tolley, remove our mayor and councillors and are behaving like crazy women in control.

What kind of crazy person would be so reckless with other peoples cause someone to do this?

  Some councils are seriously keen to offload housing assets that not only do not wash their face but also don’t qualify for the massive income related government (taxpayer) subsidy. Sell them off and also avoid the government mandated upgrade costs.
  
  Wellington City Council is grovelling to the government to please please subsidise their rents or ratepayers will get even grumpier as they pay. And pay …..
  
  Meantime tenants might want to be a bit careful what they wish for. Some council housing in the Wairarapa was sold to a community housing provider, taxpayer subsidised rents applied. Yay! After a while, assume after a contracted retention period, they were onsold eventually to a private buyer. And guess what, rents went up to market rate or at least a lot closer to.

    The people who typically live in Council-owned pensioner housing are on tiny incomes.
    
    They couldn’t possibly afford market rents, so the Councils subsidise them.
    
    But then the Councils can’t afford to maintain, let alone improve, the properties.
    
    The only sensible solution is for Councils to sell to community housing providers who can use the Income Related Rent scheme, as well as appeal for charitable funding.

      It’s not just pensioner housing, a lot of which has been sold off over the years anyway. It is also social housing, for all ages.
      
      Wellington City Council tenants can qualify for rebated rent depending on income. Couple of years back the Council requested those applying for rebated rent to supply proof of income via bank statements. Uproar and this was quietly withdrawn.
      
      Clearly the council thought some under reporting was going on, and from my experience in the social housing sector of course it was. The uproar alone should have confirmed it. Some have been in various forms of subsidised housing for decades.
      
      Friend lived for several years in a house that has 6 Kainga Ora units directly behind. All solo parents. Except none of them were – every weekday morning a chap came out with his lunchbox and drove off to work. Friend asked one that she knew and was begged to say nothing to anyone lest benefit was cut and rent increased.
