With the recent violence in our central cities, including gun incidents in Wellington, will the Police Minister still claim it is safe and there has not been an increase? She seems to have been very quiet lately: is she still in witless protection? The MP for Wellington Central has also been silent on the problem. Maybe Ms Willis was right.
The one thing I would like to know is how many of these gun incidents involve an MSSA or illegal weapon and have a licenced gun owner. I suspect the answer is lots and none respectively. If that is the case, it would show the gun buyback was just an ill-thought out PR exercise wasting taxpayer’s money. Something this government specialises in.

  The Media reported yet another mass display of wealth and power on the roads ,this time the gang called the Killer bees or some such juvenile ,imported ghetto moniker .
  
  Surely the regime and media should be questioning the source of the wealth and doing its utmost to disrupt and prevent .
  
  Gangs and drugs are destroying the social fabric of this once proud and hard working nation. Far more so than any imported lab escape bug. There was plenty of money for that , why not for destroying the gangs .
  We should have a zero gangs policy , not carbon zero , again a pointless priority and huge expenditure and disruption to the economy and productivity that makes no differnce to ordinary New Zealanders’ lives and will make no difference to the weather , when smashing the gangs would be a wonderful social , moral , economic value.

    And the bloke shot by Police last weekend was farewelled by a large number of Nomads gang members, whilst his father was released from prison to attend the tangi. Police basically told travellers to avoid SH3 near the New Plymouth Crematorium to avoid the area for several hours on Saturday, so gang members could do burnouts en route to the tangi.

      The Media Pardy went apeshit over an alleged anti vaxxer driving towards the police in Wellington , on and on did they go about it , how evil , spawn of satan , to endanger our guardians so , the boys in blue out there saving the country and all of us from the Bat pox carrying river of filth and scum.
      
      The other ram was that New Plymouth one . And the Media pardy reaction.
      
      How dare the Cops protect themselves . Poor lad going straight . Lost potential . Cops with delayed answers for the media , how secretive and sinister ……….

  As I indicated yesterday the Government only wants the minimum of policing (general policing as distinct from road safety policing) to avert a complete breakdown of law and order.
  Perhaps the Government should direct the Police to temporarily divert some ‘road safety’ officers and cars to general policing and provide the extra budget to do that.

      My mother in law died before before I met her, but my wife loved her dearly.
      Furthermore.
      Her death caused huge disruption in her family. Those who were still at school had to leave and fend for themselves because she was the bread winner & their father wouldn’t support them.
      So to answer your question.

I remember when

While appreciating the difficulties covid could have for the armed forces Anzac Day without their participation seems wrong.
If the armed forces don’t commemorate Anzac Day what is the point.
Large presence of our Army and Air Force at our Dawn Parade and as we were dispersing there was a Whut, Whut, Whut and two Air Force helicopters in close formation did a flypass.
Just seemed perfect.

  I thought I’d have a look at it too. I joined in too late to catch Kerre’s performance and agree with Captain…the rest of them were stars??? The same sex couple danced quite well but I couldn’t follow the judges scoring criteria. I felt that Butterbean, although undoubtedly charming, was quite clumsy, and the lowest scored (all 6ft 5 of him) did a better job.
  Who are these two male judges anyway. The green haired one seemed to have great difficulty stringing his comments together.
  I’ll probably not bother to watch again.

I remember when

A couple of points from our Dawn Service.
Firstly, the MC suggested that we mouthed the words of the National Anthems because of covid requirements.
A derisory laugh passed through the large, 70% unmasked gathering.
Secondly, the singer of the National Anthems decided to add a rather muted Aotearoa after the final ‘God defend New Zealand.’

  On the rugby league on Friday night they did the traditional Anzac ceremony (which they do really well over there) and followed up with the nz and australian national anthems.
  
  The girl only sang the English version of ours. Quite refreshing after the torrent of maori shit being rammed down our throats at present

We stood still as the desert heat surrounded us, our mournful energy was almost visible in the pre-dawn haze.
The deafening silence amongst the group was as resounding as the sadness in our eyes.
Struggling to keep my tears from falling, I stared at the flag draped across the coffin.
It would forever hold a new meaning to me.
It covered you, as if the entire country was embracing your body, attempting to provide comfort in your time of need.
I saw your face in my mind, imagined your smile, what your laugh would sound like… And I broke.
As my tears began to fall, I kept my eyes on the flag. A tidal wave of emotions was ripping through me as I struggled to stay composed.
The weight on our shoulders as we carried you home felt insignificant in comparison to the heaviness in our hearts.
As we bowed our heads before you, my eyes slowly closed. My heart swelled with love and respect for you, our fallen.
The aircraft door closed, and you were gone from our sight. No longer before our eyes, but never far from our thoughts.
As the sun rises on this day, I will remember.
The heroes of the past, and those who are currently in a foreign land, fighting in the pursuit for a better world.
I will breathe in the morning air, the same air that they once breathed… I will breathe in them.
My lungs will be filled with the fallen, and I shall exhale a silent thank you for their sacrifice.
The world has not forgotten. They, and all that continue to fall under the flags, will never be forgotten.

  I can’t understand why anyone who believes in democracy would be against a referendum but of course I’ve just answered my own question. Those clutching their pearls at the suggestion of a referendum on co governance I believe are just concerned about losing and losing so badly the idea will be put to bed for good. Equally the reason that the government hid their co governance policies from the nation at the last election is because they knew , or at least suspected, they would lose it. So they don’t want a referendum and they don’t want to test their policies at the ballot box. What they do want to do is push through a policy regardless of it’s popularity on an unsuspecting public who will have to live with the consequences for good , whatever they may be, and if negative face untold upheaval trying to reverse them. So actually I guess do understand why they don’t want a referendum it’s because they don’t believe in democracy. They believe that they know best and we should all just shut up and continue to provide the money for it.

    This is why they are frantically trying to frame a referendum as the majority bullying the minority.

  Morgan Godfery is a strong Leftist, a former professional union organiser, who, surprisingly, runs an Otago University entrepreneurship course. Socialism and communism are at the opposite pole of the capitalist cpmce[t pf entrepreneurship.
  
  Godfery’s also a business development manager in the university’s Centre for Innovation. Perhaps his business posts are because, or partly because, he’s also the university’s Maori partnerships research manager, and Otago ensures all research projects are vetted by Maori. His law degree doesn’t make him a business guru.
  
  Godfery is an active writer against “colonialism”. An article in the Herald in 2015 described Godfery a”specialises in Maori politics and indigenous issues.”
  
  Otago University, which uses race-based entry to some medical courses, wouldn’t be more Woke if it were a giant methamphetamine mill.

  Jackson on Q and A rabbitted on talking nonsense to Tame about MMP and FPP trying to link that to co-governance. It matters not to him that it was incoherent, mumbo jumbo – he just bullies his way through interviews as he obviously does in Cabinet.
  
  My fear is that Seymour’s referendum may backfire. Too little thought and planning went into the idea. It is not really referenda material. The idea of co-governance in unconstitutional – end of story.

    That is the alternative, yes. And one they are very happy with – as long as they are the tyrannical minority, of course.
    
    What needs constant restatement is that a free society means freedom of thought, expression and association is the right of all citizens, including those who are in the minority. Democracy is how free societies choose representative governments; free enterprise is how they organise themselve economically.
    
    In a free society the government should set minimum acceptable standards for goods and services, then allow people to organise themselves to provide these things – through for-profit or not-for-profit enterprises, voluntary associations, charities, etc. In that way, any minority can provide for themselves the services that matter to them in the way they want to do them.

  How many democratic countries in the world have a Government that talks about “the tyranny of the majority” and is developing plans to partially dismantle democracy? The intent of this is now out in the open and yet it seems most of the population aren’t bothered.

    I have read of Kiwiblog many defences of US democracy, for example, which in many respects entrenches the power of voters in rural areas of smaller populations at the expense of voters in larger urban areas.
    That’s just one example. There are many more ways that simple democratic choice is moderated by other institutions.

        Not really. SA quite plainly did not have a universal franchise and the vote was in the hands of white citizens only. The size of each white electorate, especially the rural vote, was gerrymandered to favour the ruling party. That is why the National party, the apartheid party, managed to win all the elections despite winning the popular vote on only 2 occasions. So Mike is partially right – America is not a democracy – it’s a Constitutional Republic. There’s a difference.

        Under later apartheid there were votes in Bantustans, but these were not equal to votes outside them.
        
        If Maori get privileged representation, that is need fewer voters per elected representative than non-Maori do, that isn’t totally unlike the different powers of votes in, and outside, the Bantustans of apartheid-era South Africa.

      So far as I’m aware, so I could well be wrong, the only respect in which the US ‘entrenches’ the powers of rural voters, is incidentally through giving each state the same representation in the Senate, regardless of total population. Since the US has a federal constitution in which states are geographically separate, have their own state governments, budgets, laws, this is at least semi-defensible, and is not specifically an entrenchment of rural voting privilege: small, not-particularly-rural states such as Delaware and Rhode Island benefit also.
      
      When state and local governments manipulate wards and electorates in order to to suppress or magnify a particular group’s voting power, this is usually denounced as gerrymandering, at least by the losing side.
      
      The original US constitution, I think, counted slaves as 3/5 of a person for electoral representation while denying them the vote. This is now seen as a shameful blot on US history. Who would defend it as moderating simple democratic choice? If Coffey et al wish to moderate Rotorua voters’ choices, perhaps they should consult the voters first.

      In the US federal system, each states get two senators (so equal senate voting power), while the number of congressional districts is determined by population (similar to our Parliament).
      
      Remember that when this sytem was first developed, a far greater proportion of the population would have lived rurally, so the effect at Senate level was probably quite different.
      
      The US Constitution provides the mechanism for changing this system if it is found unworkable and also for protecting minorities from the tyranny of the majority.

    All of the self-hating Whites who are deluded into feeling (i.e. not thinking) that Maori have been systemically disadvantaged will be in for a rude shock when they themselves are actually systemically disadvantaged for being White and that being an ally of Maori doesn’t entitle them to anything at all. For some, a figurative punch in the face from cold hard reality will be the only thing that will make them understand the tangible implications of what was hitherto a comforting theory.
    
    The essence is that they are willingly giving up political influence and cultural dominance in exchange for …. what, I’m not too sure. Subservience on both counts, I suppose. Convincing people via emotive manipulation is a much better way to take power than the old method of taking it by force, and is necessary when the usurpers are a vast and incapable minority.

  It surprises me that Māori are happy with token Te Reo words and phrases being jumbled into what is an essentially English language document or speech. RNZ do it as a kind of smug middle-class nod to our indigenous people.

    When I’m reading an article and am constantly having to google words or look up multiple organisations I often just give up and therefore become less-well engaged and informed about what our government is up to.

  Durden, the document you link to seems to relate to the implementation of the UN Indigenous Rights Declaration, which Government has said is not Government policy in terms of the He Papua Report.
  Some pertinent points seem to be –
  
  5 noted that previous Cabinet decisions in 2019 and 2021 provide parameters for the development of the Declaration plan [MCR-19-MIN-0003, SWC-21-MIN-0083];  
  6 noted that consistency with the Declaration will need to happen over time and require some adjustments to the legal and policy settings;

    The phrase “He PuaPua” is tainted so is simply being de-commisioned . Wily Willie has everything from He Puapua simply re-stated as “themes” emerging from the consultation, which happened only with Maori, that has just ended. Presumably Government policy will give effect to these themes, effectively in full.
    
    What do Maori want ? EVERYTHING.     I also notice that some MSM reporting is floating around saying that — “Tino Rangatiratanga” trumps “Kawanatanga”.     It also looks like Wily Willie has also figured out that they do not need a second house of (Maori) Parliament. So that is off the table. After all, a guaranteed 50% representation at the co-governance table plus one or two more Maori picking up the seats from the remaining 50% general quota means Maori have full majority over governance.
    
    If we believe these fig leafs of words is any protection “Cabinet intended that implementing the Declaration will not take away from the rights of all citizens or threaten the unity of our country”, we are dreaming.

Has the Government already created the void which extreme ideas fill before a formal position is announced – as was the case with the “conversation” on Capital Gains Tax – and will “co-governance suffer the same fate :

The main reason for not going ahead with the CGT was because it was clear New Zealanders did not want one, she said.

    A family member spent three terms as an elected representative on a local council.
    In all that time, the governance and management groups practically begged the local iwi to send their people to be paid reps on some of the council committees.
    Eventually one man was identified as “the one”, but he seldom turned up to take part. He had voting rights on the committees and would be paid a fee per meeting attended.
    But no interest in local democracy apparently.

Watched both The Nation and Q & A on the weekend. Now I wouldn’t mind if the interviewers treated Government Ministers as thy treated Kuxon and Willis, but they don’t. Both Tame and Sheppard were a disgrace but both Nats held their composure. I know I wouldn’t have!!!! I got told off by my better half for my language. Just as well my blood pressure wasn’t being monitored

Didn’t listen to him often, but when I did I admired his gumption to talk sense without fear or favour.
He wasn’t a conceited know-all like so many of them and was prepared to listen to differing points of view without resorting to put downs and insults to those with whom he did not agree.

  I was deeply saddened to hear of Bruce’s passing. He seemed to be that last bastion of speaking up for people of my generation, and had a wealth of knowledge to back up his opinions – Something really lacking in the so called journalists of today.

    I recently watched a doco on the Nazi Nuremberg laws where the status of an individual was dependant on their heritage. Complex guides where drawn up to explain if a citizen was a citizen or if they were of pure enough heritage to hold such and such a position in society. Proving your pure blood line back to X amount of years could mean the difference of being able to treat a patient if you were a Dr or marry a person you had fallen in love with. On this Anzac Day I have been thoughtful of the sacrifice my own family made fighting this perverse nonsense. My father was Parachute regiment, his brother Sussex Regiment 3rd Airborne Division, swam the Rhine to escape captivity, their oldest brother CSM G Patrol long range desert group mentioned in dispatches and awarded MM at Salerno later dropped into Yugoslavia to help partisans fight retreating Germans and Tito”s communists. There were of course the others who endured the wrath of the Luftwaffe such as my aunties and grand parents having to sleep in garden shelters every night for months with their infant children. Idiots now are prepared to see themselves and the world through the same corrupt racial lenses . Thats as maybe but their expectation that I respect them sort of makes me sick.

      The Partisans were Tito’s communists. The western allies decided to support them rather than the royalist Chetniks as the latter were more likely to side with the Germans against the Partisans.     Fascinating and frightening at the same time. There needs to be a clearly articulated alternative vision to that the current government is promoting. It particularly needs to promote an alternative to the toxic idea that Maori are unfairly disadvantaged unless they are specifically advantaged over others.
    
    A cohesive society cannot be built or sustained on discrimination by descent (since, following the science, we know race to be a false human construct). Descent is only one of the many communities we are each born into within our society and which we will belong to over the course of our lives. We need a vision that allows each of us to engage with our varied communities as much or as little as we choose.
    
    We also need to be practical. We can’t afford endless specialised minority systems provided by the state; such systems will likely follow the majority way. But if so many other minorities can handle that, continually claiming that Maori can’t does them more harm than good.

  I confidently predict that if these Maori radicals and their allies have their way and this ‘decolonisation’ of education goes ahead and Maori become immersed and saturated in ‘Maoriness’ – it is Maori themselves who will lose, in terms of life outcomes.
  
  History is replete with examples of two peoples coming together, one having a more widespread language, being more advanced scientifically and technologically-speaking and punching well above their weight on a per-capita basis in trade, commerce, education etc.
  
  Think of the Scots (my own people) and the English and, secondly, the Czechs and the Germans – both in and following the 17th Century.
  
  So-called leaders in the Scot and Czech communities were doing everything they could to hold back the tide of English and German influence in their respective societies and calling on their people to resist learning the English and German languages etc.
  
  All this achieved was the continued impoverishedness of their communities.
  
  Those Scots and Czechs who ignored these pleas and jumped into learning English and German respectively, attended universities, studied language, maths, science etc were instantly on a path of greater wealth accumulation, prosperity and better life outcomes than their fellows who refused to do so.
  
  I reckon ‘decolonisation’ is just the same thing but in reverse.
  
  Maori will become saturated in ‘Maori-wonderfulness’ but they will have missed out on a huge determinant of how well they will lead their lives – that of developing skills and behaviours that other people are prepared to pay for.
  
  That’s my view and I’m sticking to it.

  I saw some small piece of the interview on TVNZ news last night. Tame kept going on about how people with good income don’t ‘need’ $18k extra income. He thought he was making a good point.
  Sigh.
  This seems to be a common refrain in NZ. This idea that somebody else can decide what we ‘need’, and take from us anything we don’t ‘need’ needs to be knocked on the head.
  Why on earth would anybody try and improve their quality of life if some socialist will just come and take their stuff because they don’t ‘need’ it.
  I wish Luxon had pointed out that Tame didn’t ‘need’ his nice jacket, or his cash in his wallet.
  I hope Luxon doesn’t actually agree with Tame that govt should take things we don’t need from us.

    At current exchange rates, that equates to NZD 91 – 114k and $144k. Adjust for CPI inflation from Q1 2018 to Q1 2022 and the figures become $103 – 129k and $163k. Our current median wage of $27/hr = $56k per year.

  If he contends those who are the government overspent we’d like to know what he would have done differently that would have curtailed the spending and enabled tax cuts.
  The big three are healthcare, welfare (half of which I’d pensions) & education.
  Personally I believe National is looking at cuts to healthcare spending by introducing more user pays for non urgent surgery.

  What got me boiling about that interview from tame was he asked luxon for specific examples of wastage. As soon as he gave one, eg 1.8 billion on whatever, tame just shouted him down and said but that’s only 1 percent of government spending. It’s still wasted though.
  
  So in a rapid lefties mind it’s OK to waste money as long as you waste lots of it so each piece of wastage looks small on its on.
  
  And then they all piled on saying how tame had taken down luxon.
  
  He asked for examples, luxon gave them and then tame said its fine to waste 1.8 billion.
  
  They have no clue.
  
  If I’m wrong and the country actually wants a bunch of lying, money wasting racists with no world knowledge or experience running the country and votes them back in next year then it’s an easy decision for me.
  
  House will be ready for sale but I’m guessing it won’t be the only one…

She said he was one of the few ZB talkback hosts worth listening to.
He despised this government and all it stands for. Never gave the time of day to any Bene’s calling in looking for a moan….and hated wokesters with a passion.

I got a letter asking me to confirm, by scanning details to an email address, my eligibility to vote in upcoming wellington local body elections.

Since when was electoral roll stuff done by an outside organisation to the electoral commission?

The letter was signed by a chap calling himself an electoral officer, but the website above lists him as a business development manager.

Are we heading down the same voting road as the USA where shadowy third parties count our votes for us?

I had no idea what a following Bruce Russell had on ZB. Ma was telling us he’d amassed over 100,000 calls in his time as a Talkback Host!

She used to really luv listening to him…. but never called up to give her opinion on anything. Bruce never suffered fools gladly she reckons. And made no secret of his contempt for that lefty wokester Tim Rocksbrah, or those other two morons on the Noon – 4 slot.

Ma’s concern now, is that ZB will take the opportunity to appoint yet another Labor suckhole to take his place 🙁

Serious questions to follow. First tho…
– The filthy unvaxxed have been allowed to eat alongside those with vax passports for a while now. I think they’re even allowed on planes now.
– People have been allowed to gather in larger numbers without masks.

Has there been _any_ discernable change in hospitalisation and/or case numbers since the restrictions were eased?
If these restrictions made some sort of difference, shouldn’t there be some way to _know_ they’ve made a difference?

  No evidence at all that there was a jump in infections/hospitalisations.
  
  Looks like numbers had been decreasing before
  April 4th when vaxx pass mandate ended.

National needs to release a simple diagram showing everyone exactly what they would get under their indexation of the tax brackets policy. So much talk of $2 a week for the poor and $18000 for Luxon, it’s complete bullshit. You want to win next year, start owning your policy and call out the lies about it. Indexing the tax brackets are a good thing for all.
