“Co-governance”
Ngai Tūhoe don’t see co-governance as the final answer. Instead, “it’s the next bus stop in a journey that has to be made”, according to an iwi leader.
… Tāmati Kruger (Taneatua) is the chairperson of Tūhoe Te Uru Taumatua and was the tribe’s Chief Negotiator for the 2014 Treaty settlement … [in which] … the former Te Urewera National Park was returned to Tūhoe to run in partnership with the Department of Conservation.

It will be very interesting to see how Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern defines “Co-governance”.
And this time it will have to be a bit more substantial than “When you see it, you will know it”.
By the time you see “co-governance” it may be a little late, depending on your view of it.

And if “co-governance” is the next bus stop in a journey that has to be made, what is the real destination, and does Ardern confirm and define that as well.

      Thank you, it’s very clear to me what Luxon means, I just can’t understand why people can’t see it, he has ruled out resources and services having two separate platforms, surely this is what we all want, and as he says, apart from that, we don’t know what is in any policy, as usual, Labour are silent.

      Foresters, farmers and other land users have had the use rights they have paid for continually eroded and compromised by rafts of regulation coming from a cabal authorised by successive Governments including National.
      These land users have paid for the right to use their land. They also paying the ever rising land tax called rates ( something Iwi does not have to pay)
      The worst example is Bolger’s RMA!
      Encrypted in that document is privilege for Iwi.
      Luxon’s National clearly is not going to address these weeping sores.

  Perhaps we should play that game. Offer Tuhoe immediate independence. They never signed the Treaty, after all.
  
  But – cut off all govt transfers; set up a passport controlled border; make them responsible for native wildlife, land erosion protection etc. Not to mention currency & return of their own 501s.

    “Indigenous” peoples get to have both.
    
    Of course the intent is that Maori (eg) should get to continue their local practices under the broader umbrella of a nation and its laws. Such as marae protocol – which they do. Immersion schooling in Te Reo only – which they have.
    
    It is stretching things to say that includes veto over national health decisions. Or the ability to block water management decisions unless certain conditions of self interest are met.
    
    Te Urawera shows that Maori will expect control of all the money without doing anything to further the interests of the National asset they manage

  Perhaps that is the plan? If the bridges and tracks fall to bits, annoying white and even more annoying Chinese folk won’t visit.
  
  Unfortunatly if they wreck the health system that is more serious. You can always go to another National Park, at least for now.
  
  BTW speaking of co governance… I discovered that Christchurch Council has entered into an agreement with the local hapu for cogovernance of the residential red zone here. This is a huge area. The most likely use will be planting native trees and installing trails, and ripping out all the legacy infrastructure. 100 years from now it could be a great native forest with walking trails.
  
  But how does this co governance work? Are the local Maori going to pay for the upkeep of the red zone, or do they just veto every sensible idea?
  
  My prediction is that the red zone will look exactly as it does today for the rest of my life.

  I don’t think Ardern has thought out what cogovernance would look like. But here are some clues;
  1. She has specifically ruled out a seperate Maori parliament
  2. She recently announced that the first round of consultation was complete and the next round will be with the general public. The first round was with “iwi and Maori organisations”
  
  This should suggests to me that the 50% representing the Maori half of the co will not be democratically elected by Maori. Remember that democracy is a western tool to keep colonised people oppressed (sarc). Instead the Maori side will be made up of the usual collection of unelected tribal grandees and aristocrats who already have their noses in the trough.
  
  As usual ordinary Maori who work for a living will be shafted along with the rest of us.

Isn’t it funny when things go wrong for Party Leaders that the heavy hitters like Mike Williams former Labour Party President crawl out of the woodwork to fiecely defend the undefendable.
The problem is these people have a habit of joining forces with the media to crucify those that are a threat to their own Party but cry wolf we it brought to their attention that their Leader has destroyed one of there own.
Obviously what has been said by Louisa Wall has tainted the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern but as the old story goes you play with fire and you will get burn’t so you have to take your hat off to the former MP with her story and timing of it has obviously caused the damage she intended and the big gun has arrived to smear the damage it has caused.

  The main thing is Wall has called out the nasty spiteful Ardern for what she really is. Be kind anybody? Now this party is hated more and more by the day, the public will be sickened by the re-emergence of Williams, the very same Williams that publicly stated he was going to Aussie to dig dirt on Key.

At a time when there is supposed to be a witch hunt on to flush child care services of predators we has this:

A woman who was convicted of having a threesome with a minor (ie. had sex with the minor as well as coercing the minor to have sex with another -ie. sex trafficking) ends up with her conviction being quashed.

Why? Was it due to some breakdown in the legal process? Nope, it was because quashed because having a historic conviction was found to have significant consequences on her life.

Now she’s free to go back to what she knows best – being a child carer.

The whole point of legal deterrents is that offending, and a conviction, will cause significant consequences on your life. This argument is used far too often to discharge without conviction.

This can only embolden criminality of all sorts, including predatory behaviour in child care services.

I love the language: she has been haunted by the conviction. Feelzy stuff to make you see her as the victim rather than the predator she is.

  I would normally agree with you. But having read the story and it is the right decision. The woman commited this offence in 1996, when she would have been between 16 and 18 years old – it is impossible to tell. It just says she is now in her “early 40s”. If the facts of this case are that she has a criminal conviction because at 16 years old she and her 16 year old boyfriend had sex with a 15 year old girl, I agree it should be overturned.
  
  If she was 18, or 19, or 21 at the time, that makes it it more serious. I am just saying that my 16/15 scenario is quite consistent with the facts as presented in the article. And today 16 year olds do not suffer life long consequences for having consensual sex with 15 year olds.
  
  BTW nowhere in the article does it say the 15 year old was coerced.

  The article suggests the woman may have been eligible for a discharge without conviction – that suggests that any criminality was minor. And it was 26 years ago. I’m not sure I want to see someone punished for the rest of their life over something that didn’t see them go to prison (she received a six-month suspended prison sentence).       It’s a dirty secret that the govt sponsored media are hiding. She wont do interviews without a heads up on the questions. She then has her large spin staff (paid by us) script her answers. She is not the only one, a large number of her MPs (especially the Maori ones)clearly read from scripts. This is evident when the answer doesn’t match the question because the questioner asked the question in a different order to what was provided.

So Louisa Wall lobbed a hand grenade into the PM’s office yesterday in the Q+A interview. Of course Q+A is a TVNZ programme, and you’ve had have expected 1News, another TVNZ programme to have followed this story up last night, wouldn’t you? Isn’t it newsworthy that a Prime Minister who exhorts us all to “be kind” would show such a lack of kindness to a fellow Labour MP, who has shown she can get things done.

But the 1News bulletin last night did not have a dicky-bird about Louisa Wall and the Q+A interview, which definitely asked questions about the PM’s demeanour and judgment. That seems rather strange, given that 1News has a significantly higher viewership than the niche political programme. Who made this editorial decision, and did any staff at 1News have any correspondence with any staff from the PM’s office over the weekend?

It’s interesting too, given the Stuff piece on misogyny at the weekend that Newstalk ZB quoted “former Labour Party member” Shane Te Pou, with him further blackening Wall’s reputation, accusing her of having a high staff turnover, suggesting she has a reputation for bullying, and that Wall had a low profile in her electorate. Is it misogyny when a former Labour Party member attacks a sitting MP, or is misogyny the sole preserve of the right?

    A great outcome for the Big Pharma is turning healthy people into unhealthy people. They’ve been perusing this strategy for decades, witness their successfully turning unhappiness into “Clinical Depression” and thereafter selling literally billions of meds like lollies. In the past the regulatory agencies seemed to catch a lot of this, but I posit that those agencies – ie the people within them – are now largely captured by the huge financial influence and inducements of Big Pharma. I still shake my head we people self-assure themselves of what they’re about to take into their bodies using claims that Big Pharma make about their own products.

    The vaxx gives initially strong, but thereafter attenuating protection based on the Alpha/wild spike protein. This only mutated slightly in Beta and Delta, but is majorly mutated in Omi. You can see the drop off in efficacy here.
    
    There will definitely be more variants. These vaxxes are ‘leaky’ which helps drive viral evolution.

      True. But the problem appears to be the vaxxed getting continuously infected. If there is a negative impact on the immune system from each infection, and to be clear that is hypothesized by some* based on their reading of the data, then this would be a very bad thing.
      
      *Igor is a good analyst and I recommend his posts, but he is sometimes a little quick to draw conclusions in my opinion.

  When did they have the booster? The vaccines give initial protection but it wanes very rapidly. It now seems that by three months you are in to negative efficacy territory.
  Data out of the UK is very worrying for the double and triple vaccinated. Right now the double jabbed are the worst affected, the lag between getting the jab and the waning is the likely explanation for this.

Actually I quite like Louisa….comes across as a really eloquent lovely lady. And admired the fact she introduced the ‘Safe Zones amendment bill for access to Abortion Clinics’.

But couldn’t believe hearing that nasty Shane Te Pou on ZB earlier, virtually describing her….. ‘as a pain-in-the-arse’.
Yet his is the same guy throwing his weight behind Otara born Fa’anana Efeso for Mayor of Auckland ffs 🙁

      Of course there is the large right to life group who don’t like killing unborn children. But that’s another debate.
      
      And there fellow KBS. IS a long “debate”” from all sides of the question.

    It wasn’t really a bought result. More that the defense simply claimed that most of the organisation of the kidnapping was done by the CIs and the accused were simply along for the ride and actually hadn’t done anything more than open their big mouths.
    
    There are transcripts even showing the main CI talking to his FBI handler going through which psychos to bring in on the plan. The CI even supposedly paid for the people to all meet up etc.

Michelle Duff’s moral panic article is now making its rounds through linkedin. Complains about the “infantilization” of Ardern and claims this is a “national security” threat. It’s funny how this misogyny didn’t prevent Ardern from securing an unprecedented absolute majority. It’s funny how the “Aunty Cindy” is more used by her supporters. It’s funny how Thatcher and Merkel never experienced this. It’s funny how calling names of a Labour PM is a “national security” issue but not calling Key “Don-key” and “Shon-key” isn’t. It’s funny how we cannot infantalise Ardern, but she can continually talk down to us like we’re stupid children.

  Sadly there is a very nasty streak amongst partisan political followers. It goes both ways of course but shonkey and donkey are nowhere near what gets levelled at the current PM, 75% (imo) of which is unjustified.
  
  Of course there was terrible stuff levelled at the Key admin by the left, particularly at female ministers, that is also part of the same problem.

    There is a lot of passion about the PM. But consider this. John Key never smirked while he created 2 classes of people and then banished one group from society, and lead a campaign of shaming and slurring them every day in the media. They weren’t allowed in cafes, hairdressers, and fired from their jobs for making a decision not to take a novel medical treatment. And then when they gathered to protest they were called all manner of names and then violently removed from the protest grounds.
    
    And the second is a concern about proposed co-governance arrangements that some feel will forever take away their equal voting rights as a new zealand citizen based on their race.
    
    That’s why people are concerned and mad. For those that were locked out of society they feel abused hurt and abused.
    We are not obsessed with John Key because he didn’t micromanage the daily minutae of our lives. Nothing to do with her sex. The level of upset is directly related to performance.

      I will say that I saw parts of the left (the blogs) rant on and on about Key smirking while attacking working people, “selling off the silverware”, and generally being an evil corporate “Nactzi”.
      
      Sure the current PM has had to do some controversial things with the pandemic but none of that excuses the abuse she receives. All it does is show the depths some people will sink to as part of justifying their irrational anger.

        The issue for Ardern is particularly over the last 2 years her decisions have had life changing impacts on people. That is when emotions take over.
        
        On a personal level I find the Sunday interview and Duff’s article insulting. The poor little lady argument doesn’t wash with me. Most people’s lives have been adversely affected by decisions over the last couple of years not just the PM. Then again the target audience was female.

        The anger at ardern is about the tyranny. She violated the bill of rights. She wasn’t forced to do this. She chose to do it. The MOH recommendation was that mandates would divide society and she took it to the furthest level to encourage people to take her shot.. She chose to do it to an extreme level banning people from everything from cafes (indoors or out) to haircuts to kids outdoor sports. The UK for example you were only banned from large stadium events and bars. She chose the harshest most personal measures to oucast a group from society. How do you think those people feel. Especially as the reality of the seriousness of the disease and the effectiveness of the vaccine are plain for all to see.

      Both Canterbury and Aotearoa have cargo/LAV carrying capacity. We can also do a joint shipment with the Aussies, as we did to fill a C-17 two weeks ago.
      
      Of course we can’t instantly get them there but they’re a lot more useful in Ukraine in two months than they are here right now.

So the “hitting balls with sticks” enthusiasts gave a stooped and limping Tiger Woods a huge ovation as he left the US Masters golf arena today @13 over par.
Whatever you think of the guy, he is one who has overcome adversity, injury and personal difficulties – yet here he is still fronting up to challenges as a professional.
Oh well, am just going to check up on my window teddy bear and turn on Netflix.

  I found it sad to watch a clearly broken Woods hobbling around the course. He never stood a chance of competing in it, I was surprised he made the cut. But, he is a massive draw card for the media. He has an exemption to play, but no doubt would have received a hefty appearance fee in return for the promotion he gives the tournament.
  I didn’t see anything worth cheering about.

      I know there are people who like making money and don’t have a limit to how much they want to make. I indirectly know one of the richest men in NZ. I asked a few years ago why, in his mid fifties and with everything he could ever need or spend that he didn’t slow down his insane lifestyle, the answer was making money was what pressed his buttons. He thrived on the competitive side. So be it and each to their own.
      I didn’t say Woods needed the money. I pointed out the obvious, at his age and with the surgeries and injuries he has had he was never ever going to be competitive. EVER.
      Just so you understand, I wasn’t having a go at him. I love golf, I have followed Woods avidly since he was an amateur and I knew before he turned professional that he was going to be the greatest player of a generation and possibly ever. He is an inspiration. A sporting legend and I am full of admiration for him. One of the greatest moments in sport was his coming back to win the Masters in 2019. Astonishing.
      But this appearance was sad. To listen to commentators trying to explain and excuse every mistake or poor shot was pathetic. The man’s body is obviously broken. The fact he can still swing a club is amazing.
      My point was and is, he had nothing to gain by playing in this tournament. My reference to the money wasn’t a slur, it was a basic observation.

      Call it what you like, win it once and you get an exemption. You get to play in the tournament every year for life. Calling it an “invitation” doesn’t change that fact. It’s why Bernard Langer and other greats were there.
      And you seem to be a little naive about how professional sport works. The Masters organisers and Augusta may not directly pay players to play, but it does happen. Always has.

  I was always of the belief that the third round would be when Tiger would start to be ‘found out.’
  For the first two rounds the adrenaline would have helped him dismiss the pain and discomfort.
  By the third round, the effort of the previous rounds would have been starting to impact.
  Any blemish would be magnified, both in his mind and his ability to recover from it.
  He isn’t getting any younger so that adds to his problems with recovery.

Why was this role conceived?

How was this role conceived?

When was it conceived and by whom?

What was the recruitment process? How many other people applied?

How did Wall hear about the role and was it publicly notified? Was it notified on Seek or TradeMe for example?

What date did applications open and close?

Which people were involved in her selection?

What criteria were used which determined Wall was the best candidate?

What will it cost taxpayers?

What results are expected to be delivered, by when? How will we assess value?

What measures are in place over time to assess whether it is a success or a failure? If a failure will she be let go?

What was the Labour Party’s involvement in any of the issues raised above?

So many questions……

Perhaps members of the news media might provide us with some answers?

  2. Its a two-year fixed term, presumably renewable
  3. The role was not advertised (there were no other applicants)
  4. Wall was directly appointed
  
  Right, good on RNZ for reporting that. My view is that unless we get full and complete answers to the questions listed above my default belief is that this is open and naked corruption by the NZ Labour Party – using public money for political gain.
  
  Buying Wall off and to step down.
  
  What other conclusion can we possibly draw?
  
  Another question to add to my list too – was their a Foreign Affairs staffer approached by a Labour Party person to create this role? Who was that person and who was that staffer?

  Jacinda seems to find having to oversee Ministers as an annoying intrusion just as Poto finds actually having to do something as Police Minister to be an annoying intrusion. Poto seems to be an electorate MP in an electorate she has no interest in and a Minister in a portfolio she has no interest in. Her key interest seems to be supporting Pacific and other people in South Auckland. If an ordinary employee is hired to do Job A but chooses to spend all her time on B, the employer would soon be asking awkward questions. But in this case the employer (Jacinda) seems quite content to let Poto do what she wants.

  Internships have become a bit of a plague recently in the public service, Swifty. I have no problem with short-term paid gigs, summer jobs, whatever, but I think there is a fair bit of make-work going on.
  This scholarship thing seems like the student might be taking the piss. One might be forgiven for thinking that the legions of HR professionals at the MoE might have been able to come up with a suitable employment contract for such a scheme. Instead, of course, they will fight this at enormous expense to prove they were right all along.

    I wonder how the unions. leftie MPs, leftie academics etc would react if, say, Foodstuffs started offering ‘internships’ in their shops at small rates of pay but in return for on the job experience?
    
    I might say “willing buyer, willing seller”.

        I don’t know if you saw my late reply to you the other day about similar stuff, but I’m intrigued about the attitude of many on the left that:
        
        1. they know better than you what’s good for you
        2. they will use the law to force you to comply with their wishes.
        
        This internship/minimum wage stuff is a classic example.
        
        Where an adult New Zealander, of sound mind and body, freely and willingly chooses to work as an intern for six months for no pay in return for the work experience, knowledge, skills and contacts they will gain – what business is it of anyone else to say or dictate that they cannot do that?
        
        Same goes for jobs paying below an arbitrary minimum wage.
        
        What business is it of anyone else?
        
        This is the arrogance of the left to me – ordering people about, telling people that they know better what is good for them and, in these instances, actually causing them harm by reducing people’s options.
        
        I’ll never understand it and I suspect I’ll never agree with it.
        
        And again, there you go with that word ‘fair’.

        As for the IRD / Employment Court determinations on who is a contractor vs an employee, some companies will skirt close to the edge on this and still do – labeling someone as a ‘contractor’ so no holiday or sick pay etc. yet expecting them to behave as an employee.
        
        I was caught in this 20yrs ago, and have a neighbour who is now;- he’s expected on time, can’t charge for transport time, no holiday leave or sick pay etc. & yet his employer drew down the Covid lockdown payments as though he was an employee. Too scared to protest and lose his job.
        They pay withholding tax for him I think.
        All the rest is for him to sort out.

They are seen as a means of attracting talented graduates with the promise of a potential permanent job in an investment bank. The contracts with the Intern are framed in such a way that they are not employment contracts, and so the “employer” avoids all minimum legal standards of employment.     It only takes competent management.
    
    The NZ government place people between the public interest and themselves —– so they can then deny responsibility if ‘their plans’ start to fall apart.

  It’s tragic in that the political gender divide will inevitably lead to a huge social disconnect that will show up as large numbers unable to create or maintain relationships due to incompatible world views and as a result many will miss out on having children and vastly more children will grow up without dads.
  
  It will also strongly encourage men to leave NZ to find a compatible partner and avoid the destructive political persecution and economic decline of a country where left wing women dominate the polling booth, a trend that will only worsen over time.

    As I said elsewhere it is very easy to trump up a bullying ‘charge’ and find a ‘victim’. Possibly there was some bullying but unlikely to be worse than in Jacinda’s or other Beehive/Parliament offices.
    Another thing – those who set Parliament’s timetable would have known to slot in an ‘unliked’ MP’s valedictory on Thursday since this is Jacinda’s kindergarten visiting day.

  Very weird report. The board first reviewed the death in Dec so it’s unclear when the death occurred? Was it also in Dec. Then the board doesn’t look at it again until March and now we get told?! And now it goes to the coroner. They also unusually don’t give the name, age or gender of the deceased which they have for the others, and only gives vague timing as to when they took the vaccine before they died. But there are a few deaths covered in the media we were waiting to hear the outcome on – but it’s unclear if it is one of them. Lack of transparency as usual.
