Barry Soper has put the boot into Labour a few times recently. But today, he’s done it with steel-capped boots! Under the headline Police Parliament protest, mental health – Labour Government abusing its power he writes:

What’s happening to democracy in this country, let alone the promised transparency of this Government?

Labour is abusing its absolute power and it seems those opposing it are powerless to do anything about it because majority rules.

He goes on the chronicle a number of occasions where Labour-dominated select committees have blocked National from getting information from officials. Then, according to Soper, he details how Police Minister Poto Williams has lied over her allegations that National blocked Labour’s former Police spokesman Stuart Nash from meeting with the Police Commissioner.

Then he turns to something really serious:

And if featherbedding Andrew Coster isn’t bad enough, get a load of what they are doing when it comes to questions being asked about its $1.9 billion spend on mental health which has come under fire from the Government’s own Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission.

The majority of Labour MPs on the Health Select Committee have blocked National’s attempt to ask questions about the commission’s first damning report.

National’s mental health spokesman Matt Doocey says it’s bizarre. Not long ago they legislated to set up the commission, and now they’re blocking MPs to ask questions of it.

Labour MPs apparently didn’t think there were any questions to be asked given the commission’s report had been made public.

That’s not for them to decide, Doocey argues, given that National, Act and the Greens all wanted to quiz the experts.

And of course, he’s right.

This goes beyond simply controlling the message. Like they say, power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Blocking National, Act and the Greens from questioning the authors of a report on failures in the Mental Health system is an absolute disgrace. People are dying because they can’t access Mental Health services, but Labour MP’s on the select committee are more concerned with playing petty politics. As one who has battled mental health issues, I find Labour’s actions to be outrageous.

Kudos to Barry Soper for expressing his dissatisfaction so eloquently, even if he runs the risk of being frozen out of the PM’s media gatherings. It’s time someone senior called the Government out on its conduct.

  Soper aired his interview with Potato Williams about access to Cos5er. She tried a word salad and lied about Stuart Nash being denied access by the national government. When pushed, she basically said I don’t care and it is my decision and FO.

  Talking about the “Labour government abusing its power”, I wonder if MSM journalists (apart from Barry Soper) made any critical comment on the following that occurred during the recent Parliamentary protests:
  
  *Labour stated (and was uncritically repeated by the MSM) that the protests were “illegal”. How chilling, since when has a protest ever been illegal? (Because some bylaws were ignored? How come that doesn’t apply when Green protesters prevent people from entering buildings etc)?
  
  *Labour/Speaker prevented the Parliamentary Press Gallery journalists from directly talking to the protesters. Apart from Barry Soper ignoring that “totalitarian” decree, the rest of the gutless parliamentary press gallery complied. Do we have Freedom of the Press anymore? Clearly not!
  
  *Labour brought out something not seen in NZ’s history since 1981 – the Police riot squads!
  
  *Labour supported the Police response to shoot protesters with rubber bullets – since when has that ever happened before?
  
  Not only are Labour abusing its power, they are arrogant, out of step with public sentiment, and are evoking “totalitarian” measures when the population disagrees with them!
  
  It seems some in the EU Parliament called out Canada’s Justin Trudeau for his “totalitarian” responses to the Canadian protesters (like freezing their bank accounts), will international media and politicians call out Jacinda Ardern’s and Labour’s responses against ordinary people that disagree with them?

        I thought it was going to be enough fun seeing the court action seeking to disqualify his candidacy for re-election.
        I understand his defence to the automatic disqualification of anyone who has sworn allegiance to the constitution but has then engaged in insurrection is that as congress amnestied confederates in 1872 no one after that time could possibly be a traitor to their oath.

  IMHO Putin will look for a solution that enables him to remain in power. The sanctions are biting not only those around him but ordinary Russians. He needs to show some return for the thousands of body bags.
  He will look to retain the Eastern regions ironically the area he has destroyed and where most of the deaths and wounded have occured.
  If he can do this his position is secured for now.
  The west will agree as it wants to end the fighting and agreeing with Putin is the only way to do this.

    It would be somewhat of a win, given that Putin’s initial target appears to have been to install a puppet regime and if not, at least take everything up to the Dneiper river.
    
    I re-watched “The Death of Stalin” the other day and apart from being funny as f-, it made me wonder what might be going on inside the Kremlin with apparent Putin allies disappearing.
    
    For a long time, telling Vlad exactly what he wanted to hear would have been a great survival strategy, but now that the wheels have (literally in some cases) come off the invasion of Ukraine, the re-evaluation of advice might have made things distinctly unhealthy for some yes-men.

  I’ve been listening to some of the Senate presentations on the Biden Family Finance Investigation and the details are quite shocking.
  Hunter’s Company#1 gets $1M from a Chines Front Co the day a Chines spy (Patrick Ho) is arrested in the USA. 8 months later when Ho is sentenced, he moves $1M from Co#1 to Co#2 with the transaction description “Patrick Ho representation”. note that neither of these companies is a law firm, and no actual representation is recorded on any of their books.
  All indications are this was to encourage Joe to get Patrick off the hook or get a reduced sentence.
  This is only one of the cash flows being tracked by the committee.

Thank Christ we have one sane Journalist in New Zealand, Barry Soper that can see the abusethat is happening in our great Country that main stream media obviously think is a joke but see no need to comment.
Barry Soper: Police Parliament Protest,Mental Health- Labour Government abusing its Power are the headlines, so what’s happening to democracy in this Country, let alone the
Transparency that was promised by this Government and in democracy why should MP’s be denied the right to question a public officialwithout any good reason.
Certainly Police Minister Poto Williams wasn’t providing any when I spoke to her on her way into the debating Chamber.
Kudos to Barry Soper because this Government and the Prime Minister have sold their soul s to the devil in the quest to remain in power without those that are powerful enough in New Zealand wanting to question this abuse so come on New Zealander’s stand up and be counted on this dishonesty and blatant abuse of power.

  Yeah but who is calling the shots? Is it Labour or the bureaucracy? Powerful state bureaucracy over riding the legislative. Too many simple people are MPs vs harden career professionals. Many of the political class appear frighten of leaks or information releases than can come from the bureaucracy.

    Simon: You make a valid point. Early on when we were promoting the three strikes (3S) law, we asked Justice officials to come up with some estimates of the impact of the law as proposed on the prison population. The numbers came back: up to a 40% increase.
    
    Rodney and I wondered how the hell we were going to sell that. Long story short, it turned out that the officials had simply made up numbers in the hope of killing the Bill.
    
    When Judith Collins took it over her officials did some proper work, taking “striker” offender numbers over the past 30 years and projecting those numbers forward over the next 30, factoring in the 3S law.
    
    I can’t remember the exact numbers now, but after ten years it was something like 400 extra beds, with a maximum impact of 750 – i.e less than 1% of the prison muster – after 30 years.
    
    Bureaucrats have immense power. As Margaret Thatcher famously said “Yes Minister is a documentary not a comedy.”

    I agree. In fact this happens in Local Govt as well, as I have commented several times in the last few years.
    This is the gist of an email I sent to Hosking & Plunkett some years ago:
    “I worked for a council for 5 years, after a lifetime of private employers.
    I learned very quickly that the elected councillors had very little to do with the decision-making process: that was the job of group managers, the CEO, and selected ideologically-driven employees.
    And what made it worse, some of those employees were appointed by their managers, and did not go through a competitive selection process where the position was contested by applicants. They may previously have been consultants or part-time ‘advisors’ .
    Many council employees have had little or more likely no private employment experience.
    I also found very quickly that the elected councillors and Mayor were egotists and in several cases bloody thick.”

Well, how are my children supposed to identify themselves by this logic? Half of them is here by right and the other half should just be thankful to be here? If the Labour Party and the Māori Party have their way, my children would be labelled Māori by default and their Cambodian heritage would become insignificant. As far as I’m concerned, my children have the same one in 5 million say as all people born in New Zealand, Cambodian refugees, and many other races who have made New Zealand their home.

    New Zealand, or at least Maori New Zealand, seems to hav e a “one drop” rule: any proportion of Maori genes, no matter how tiny, and you are Maori.
    
    This mirrors the common standard in the United States before the 1860s Civil War: one drop of African blood and you were Black.
    
    If you are 1/32nd South Island Maori you should be able to choose both being a member of Ngai Tahu and ticking a census questionaire as ” White”, and doing this comfortably.
    
    The one-drop rule comes from the international attitude of the day.
    
    There’s a popular series on YouTube in which people open results from DNA testing services, such as Ancestry.
    
    In America, most, White or Black, seem to want to learn they have Native American genes. In British Whites, the hope seems to be for a touch of Viking genes.

      It is my understanding that there is no legal definition of a Maori in NZ. Or rather that there a number of different definitions in different pieces of legislation. No doubt when someone “tidies” this anomaly the result will be that Maori parents will insist on their children marrying a Maori in order to keep their rights to the scholarships etc. The one drop rule was put into law in the early 19 hundreds.Dinesh D’Souza The Big Lie covers it.

      Incidentally, she mentioned being called “a traitor to [her] race”; Labour absolutely hates so called race and class traitors. I used to get heckled for being a traitor to my class.

        I’ve seen a fair bit of her press releases (the MSM ignores them) and she is very passionate and actually knows what she’s talking about (her speech about growing up in the system was incredible).
        
        Seymour does actually “let them off their leashes” but the media can’t have us know that ACT is actually pretty deep. Much easier to ignore them and pretend they’re a liability.

        Perhaps the problem for ACT’s MPs is lack of a channel or vehicle where they can express their opinions and develop their political images.
        
        A web site, called something like ACT speaks, where they could rip into issues and challenge the Leftists and Maori activists given rein to rant in Stuff, the Herald, on State TV, and on State radio.
        
        It wouldn’t be expensive to run, and might become popular. If not, it would be better than silence.

He Puapua is a Labour “response” to the UN Indigenous People’s Declaration.
In signing up to that Declaration, National quite clearly stated they were happy with the Treaty of Waitangi to define the bounds of New Zealand’s engagement with the aspirational elements of the Declaration.
Do Labour intend to amend the Treaty, or act outside the bounds of the “principles of the Treaty”?

    Skin colour seem unlikely to have been a factor in Marley’s type of melanoma.
    
    New Zealand has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, and non-Maori New Zealanders suffer it at five times the rate of Maori.
    
    The fashion for white-skinned but mixed-race New Zealanders to identify as Maori may mean an even greater proportion of skin cancer sufferers in NZ are White than official statistics indicate.

        You either didn’t know, or ignored, the fact that Marley’s melanoma was of a type unrelated to effects of sun on skin. His came from a toenail.
        
        Yes, ethnicity isn’t always related to race. Israeli Jews v. Palestine Arabs is an example of that, and another example is Slavic Ukrainians v Slavic Russians.
        
        In New Zealand, for voting purposes, you state which ethnic identity you choose: Maori or non-Maori.
        
        We now have blue-eyed, blond Maori as well as Maori of traditional, or historic, appearance. In delineating statistics of skin cancer, skin colour is important.
        
        If more white-skinned people are identifying as Maori, that means incidence of skin cancer among those identifying as Maori will likely rise.
        
        That it turn would affect a five-to-one ratio of melanoma in non-Maori New Zealanders over melanoma in New Zealanders who identify as Maori. It would suggest 5:1 is an understatement.

The sea is only a few centimetres higher than it was 100 years ago and that gets literally swamped by tides and storm surges.

Also every major storm event and flood is now linked to climate change by the media.

NIWA has a database of major flood and storm events in New Zealand. When I look at the events, the damage and deaths in the period from 1860 to 1970 looks much worse than what we see today.

Also, if the market took sea level rise seriously, all those multi million dollar beach front properties around New Zealand would be plummeting in value. Nope.

    Given sea level rise in Auckland is around 2-3mm pa and isn’t increasing I’d suggest all the owners of beach front property in Auckland have priced in ‘long-term risks’.
    In contrast, looking at Te Awanga in HB, values have dropped due to erosion exposing the houses to high risk, so they have too.

      A tiny beachfront place that was only good to gut and completely reno ($500K reno) just went for $1.82mil. (I thought at $1.4 I was silly!)
      The new subdivision which isnt beachfront is circa $1mil a site.
      
      TA/Clifton/Haumoana is at risk of dropping thru a seismic event .. like 1931/ 1.5 METERS drop…if that happens 2mm a year wont matter!!

    Markets will be excellent at determining risks over 30 – 50 years because the banks and insurers will be highly incentivised to factor in climate risks.
    
    But my main point remains – the harm done by climate related events in New Zealand is less today than 100 years ago, especially in relation to deaths. There is simply no evidence that storms and floods are worse due to climate change..

    Thats the thing, the market does price it appropriately given the constraints the market operates under. Just because you or I disagree with the market value, doesn’t mean the market value is wrong, it just means a lot more people (and currency) in the market value the risk differently to us. Sometimes this results in a bargain from a personal point of view, sometimes it results in a rip off, depending on how our own personal biases differ from the markets overall sentiment.

    The bullshit around sea level rise is distorting the market.
    
    In NZ sea level changes are almost entirely caused by seismic activity. Ask the people of Kaikoura if they’re worried about a 2cm change over 100 years when the level changes a metre or more in a few seconds.
    
    The 1855 Wellington EQ caused a 1.5m uplift – changing a shipping basin into a cricket ground, as well as creating a lot of the surface area that is modern Wellington.

I was only seven years old but remember it as my father was the company commander of the last amphibious company of DUKWs in the uk and was hauled out of a family holiday to help in the rescue. It’s also where I got my first dog an English bull terrier he rescued from an overflowing river. So we did have catastrophic flooding 70+ years ago.

  Thank you B Y for your considered comment. Many NZers I spoken to have no understanding of the truth and rely as always on MSM lies. The Matata situation has nothing to do with sea level change or coastal erosion. All the BS about climate change would not save Matata. The storm certainly dumped a large amount of water (120 olympic sized swimming pools is totally irrelevant). The recent forestry activity left large amounts of fresh slash which washed in behind the creek bed boulders creating a dam. Fresh slash holds stronger that old rotten slash hence the build up. The dam pressure bought the boulder and slash debri into the residential area., hence the damage. Sure it won’t happen again, until the current pine trees are dropped, the slash is left to wash into the creek and it all happens again. Next time will it take the road and the rail bridge? That’s right, the bureaucrats who spent everyone else’s money will be gone, no accountability, but oh wait on, the next one will be Climate Change, lies and innuendo reign. I live with walking distance, have massive sea views in the best part of the country and the market has certainly looked after my investment.

I thought I was listening to a piece from the Kremlin when I heard about Mark Mitchell being banned from meeting Senior Police. Usual crap from Megan Woods and Poto Williams that when National in government they prevented Nash from meeting top police. Barry Soper say’s that’s crap, and the only time Nash couldn’t meet police was at Kaikoura Police Station at time of the earthquakes and that was understandable.
This, and the government blocking opposition MP’s calling Foster before the Justice Select Committee along with preventing questions at the Health Select Committee over the recently released Mental Health Report appears to parallel that of Putin’s ‘block information that’s bad’ playbook we are currently witnessing over Ukraine.
I guess MSM questioning Luxon over his views on abortion are of a greater democratic need, or maybe I’m just being cynical in thinking that questioning Luxon is an orchestrated distraction from an authoritarian regime that feels they are above being questioned, or are in deep crap.
They really are the worst government I have endured, and have taken political arrogance to new levels.

  At the start of the story they say he died “with” covid. Half way through they say he died “from” covid.

  It would be good if National, or Act, would challenge both Ardern and Jackson on these points as I feel their only response would be to recite the ‘racist’ call as they don’t have a cogent argument to take to the electorate and the claytons call of public consultation is purely obfuscation.

      I would go further than that say that the drivers of co-governance are in fact instrumental useful idiots. What is the effect of “co-governance”? Yes, Maori gain more power, but concomitantly, others (i.e. predominantly European-derived New Zealanders) lose power. It is a binary equation. In my estimation, the latter consequence is more significant than the former, and is in fact the aim.
      
      I have made this point on several previous occasions, but most of the “pro-” movements throughout the Western world are merely badly disguised “anti-” movements, aligned and aimed at weakening the established orders. Think of what these revolutionary movements target. In general character, the established orders they oppose tend to be, principally:
      
      White European (countered with “pro-immigration” and “diversity” policies);
      
      Male (“pro-Feminist”),
      
      Heterosexual (“pro-LGBTQI”),
      
      Christian-derived (“pro-secularism”)
      
      It follows that, if the goal is subversion and radical re-configurement of the societies where these characteristics are prevalent, these are the vectors of attack. Whatever form a particular “pro-” movement takes is really far less significant than its function, which is subverting its intended target.
      
      Consider:
      
      “UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples” – target: nations previously colonised by Europeans (further supported by the fact that indigenous Europeans don’t enjoy much overt rights-advocacy in Europe, with the notion even being explicitly repudiated)
      
      “UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration” – target: Western nations that are still, and have been historically, demographically dominated by White European people.

      What is the motivation? Breaking down resistance to the systematic removal and replacement of what are by-and-large considered Western ideals and Western expressions of social organisation. It is apparent to anyone with eyes and ears that there has been, at least since the WW2 era, a push towards post-nationalist thinking and centralised global governance. This push has increased in scope and speed in direct proportion to the “de-Westernisation” of societies, and has reached warp speed in the last 2 years in particular. It is understood that, of all peoples, those of European extraction are the most likely to oppose the program of hyper-centralisation of government, because it is the antithesis of a general Western tendency towards valuing and institutionalising personal liberty, robust individualism, self-governance and smaller administrative units.

        The US Air Forces train to be at their target within 30-50 seconds of the time allocated on the Mission. This is to allow extensive coordination of multiple assets.

    As several very good analysts have noted, Russia have the wrong armed forces for this conflict. They’ve spent up large on 5th-Gen fighters, ballistic missiles and an aircraft carrier, plus corruption has seemingly taken a big bite out of preventative maintenance.
    
    On the other hand we have Ukraine, with no ambitions to play in the global arms market, no requirement to project force, no international dick-measuring competition to enter. They looked at what their military was needed for and obviously decided it needed to do one job – defend against a potential Russian invasion. Looks like they spent their defence budget pretty effectively.

The Financial Markets Authority has stepped in to stop a housing development in Flat Bush because it offered a 15% return p.a. for three years. I am not able to say the offer met the precise terms and conditions required in making an offer to wholesale investors but gosh, 15% isn’t that flash for a return on housing development.

It sounds more like a new broom – the recently appointed CEO – trying to make a name for herslf. She already says their are too many risky ventures proposed under the wholesale investors provisions. The idea that if you are an experienced investor with plenty of readies but you cant figure out a crook deal seems to be heading south.

Why are we hellbent on removing all the risk around us? Creating a generation of pansies. No fun anymore.

As just one example non-college educated whites voted 2 to 1 for JFK in 1960. Biden’s vote consisted of just 27% of them. The top 10 wealthiest congressional districts in the USA are all held by Democrats. Seven of the ten richest counties in the US are the ones near Washington D.C.
      
      That is not a sustainable political situation, especially for the Democrats. They can only go on screaming “Latinx” and “Gonna put y’all back in chains” for so long before the illusion shatters. It’s why Dem states and cities are losing so many people: their ideas of how run those places suck for Middle and Low-income people.
      
      And this is beside your calls for an overwhelming dominance of the Democrats in the House and Senate, plus packing the Supreme Court, plus giving Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. statehood so that the Democrats end up with permanent control of the Senate.
      
      For all the claims about how the GOP is to the right of National here in NZ, that sort of support for the Democrat Party of today (a very different and very leftist beast compared to the days of JFK) certainly don’t mark you out as a Right winger.

        But I value decent, smart, grounded, honest people. And over the last 5 years there’s been precious few of those sort of people here on Kiwiblog.
        
        Most of the contributors here are drawn from the right-most 5% of the NZ political spectrum. Most of the viewpoints of the 5% of people at the edge (either left or right) are nuts. That’s all to assist his mate ‘Therapeutic Albo’ (Anthony Albanese, leader of the opposition in Aust) in the upcoming election in Aust. Scott Morrison (current Aust PM) is lukewarm on Climate Change whereas Albanese sees it as a vote winner.

It hasn’t been Poto Williams’ best week. Not only has Barry Soper exposed her as untruthful this morning, but she made herself a laughing stock during Question Time. Apologies in advance for the length, but the full exchange between her and Mark Mitchell is important for context:

Question No. 12—Police
12. Hon MARK MITCHELL (National—Whangaparāoa) to the Minister of Police: Does she stand by her statement “the reality is that this Government has never been more active in targeting the gangs and criminal leaders and getting them off the streets”; if so, how does she reconcile that statement with the over 40 percent increase in gang membership since October 2017?

Hon POTO WILLIAMS (Minister of Police): I thank the member for his question—the same question he asked me yesterday. In answer to the first part of the member’s question, yes. This Government is committed to combating the harm caused by gangs and organised crime through a variety of measures which I outlined yesterday. In answer to the member’s second question, the member is referring to the national gang list—an intelligence tool designed to give police a high level understanding of the gang environment. It was never designed to be an accurate statistical count of gang membership in New Zealand. This Government will continue to support police in their work to disrupt organised crime and gang membership.

Hon Mark Mitchell: Why did the Minister not establish a well-resourced, dedicated national gang task force when the Labour Government was called on by National three years ago to do so; and does she think that it might have helped prevent the over 40 percent rise in gang membership and the 21 percent increase in violent crime?

Hon POTO WILLIAMS: I stand by the record investment that this Government has made into increasing police numbers: 1,800, to be exact, 700 of which will be targeted towards organised crime. If that is not a specific group to deal with organised crime, I am not sure what is. We’ve already recruited 300 and we are well on our way to having the dedicated 700 members of that organised crime group by June next year.

Hon Mark Mitchell: Has gang violence increased or decreased under her watch?

Hon POTO WILLIAMS: There is no doubt that violence and gang tensions are a feature of our community and we have to do everything we can to ensure that we deal with that, and we do that by ensuring the police have the resources that they need—a record $450 million increase into their budget. Which I might remind that member, under their Government they froze police funding, which meant there was a drop in police numbers. We are committed to 1,800 further police and we are committed to also further legislative support to ensure that our police can keep our communities as safe as possible.

Hon Mark Mitchell: Point of order?

SPEAKER: I think I can anticipate it, but have a go.

Hon Mark Mitchell: Can I ask the question again, Mr Speaker?

SPEAKER: Yes.

Hon Mark Mitchell: Thank you. Has gang violence increased or decreased under her watch?

Hon POTO WILLIAMS: I reject the premise of that question, because in order to keep our communities safe, we must ensure that our police are resourced to do so. Now, I’d like to remind that member yet again—yet again—that, under National, police numbers dropped because they froze funding. You cannot do more with less, Mr Mitchell. You must make sure your police are resourced to do the job that is in front of them, and that’s what we are doing.

Hon Mark Mitchell: What exactly is the premise that the Minister is rejecting?

Hon POTO WILLIAMS: I reject the premise that gang tensions have increased under this Government’s watch, because we have Operation Tauwhiro, which resulted in a thousand arrests; every week, the organised crime groups are seizing millions of dollars’ worth of cash and assets; they’re making dozens and dozens of arrests. We are supporting the police to do a significant job. Can I remind that member he used to be a police officer and he spends every day in this House disrespecting and diminishing the work of New Zealand police, and I stand by the police every single day against your record.

Mitchell’s questions were direct, seeking factual answers. Williams waffled, read prepared “aren’t we wonderful?” lines, and obfuscated to the point where Trevor Mallard, no friend of the Opposition, allowed Mitchell to ask one supplementary question again, because his question hadn’t been remotely addressed, let alone answered.

But the kicker came in the last two supplementaries, especially the final one where Poto Williams denied that gang tensions had increased under Labour. FFS, what rock has the Minister been hiding under?

Kaikohe residents are stuck in a battle between the Killer Beez and the Tribesmen gangs at the moment. There was a drive-by shooting in Sandringham two weeks ago with gang connections. A few weeks ago a motorist was seriously assaulted by Tribesman gang members on the Waikato Expressway. And on Boxing Day last year, TVNZ reported:

Aucklanders are regularly confronted with gun violence, organised crime, and rising gang tensions. One of the country’s top police officers says he’s seeing things escalate like he has never seen before.

  Inv – I do not often watch question time these days because of the Bias of Mallard and the 6 Patsy questions each day. Most times questions from the Greens seem to be no more than patsy’s.
  
  Yesterday while channel surfing I saw about 5 minutes of Seymour questioning Ardern on co governance. Ardern dealt with the questions by way of a lengthy diatribe and did not go near the guts of the question. When Seymour challenged an answer through a Point Of Order Mallard pretty much shot him down.

    The most National-voting electorate in the country was (and probably still is) Selwyn. They voted for Amy Adams from 2008 to 2020, then Nicola Grigg in 2020.
    
    They also had no problem voting for Grigg’s grandmother, Mary Grigg 9A (a REAL feminist), in 1942.

  That’s a big if. There is no actual evidence of misogyny in that report at all. There is the very odd reference to period products (without context) but as literally any Stuff reporter will tell you, men menstruate too. Therefore not misogyny. I assume the examples given in the piece are the very worst comments made and they seem to amount to very little at all. Obviously a troll account but no evidence that it specifically targeted only women or that it targeted them because they were women and not because they were political opponents.

I remember when

Okarito Gorse Busters are offering a week of free accommodation and food for volunteers to clear gorse.
It will be from the 4-9 April and hopes to build on last year’s effort when 90 turned up.
About 19 km of shoreline was treated for gorse and weeds, 26,000 gorse plants treated and 360 litres of rubbish cleared.

Just in case you have been wondering how the Greymouth Library has been getting on.
The Greymouth Library has enjoyed increased foot traffic since the Grey District Council scrapped vaccination passports.
The Council decision pre-empted the Government’s announcement.
January loans prior to covid were 8243 (2019) and 8344 (2020).
This dropped to 6915 (2021) and 5708 (2022) although on-line activity increased from 419 (2019) to 625 this year.
Physical visits, or foot traffic, went from over 8000 in 2019 and 2020 to just 4805 this January.

Is this a ‘snapshot’ of what has happened to shops as well.

So Pfizer sponsored the Oscars. A source claims that security were told there would be an “altercation” involving Chris Rock and they were to ignore it as it was part of the show. Pfizer has been developing an alopecia drug for the last few years and just ramped up marketing for it last week.
Alopecia is the same condition that Will Smith’s wife Jada suffers from which Chris Rock was making fun of.

  The efficacy of antivirals is almost entirely down to how early you get them as viral load in your body reaches peak within a few days of infection, and antivirals are most useful in reducing that peak (the point at which your immune system has ramped up to prevent further increase), and after that the damage is being done by the long drawn out immune system response (and cytokine storm in covids case). Prophylaxis (easy, safe and cheap to do with ivermectin) being the best.

  But tonnes of stuff, like ivermectin is very effective if taken before or soon after infection and there are 10’s of studies proving this, more than for almost any medicine in use.

RNZ article today. “A man Jamie Mansfield built a social media following posting antivax and conspiratorial content as Jae Ratana.”

(They label the man a conspiracist but fail to give a single example.).

They say that he is a bankrupt and that the Convoy 22 donations went into Mansfield’s private bank account. “RNZ has seen evidence that thousands of dollars of donations to the group came flooding into Mansfields bank account by early febraury. At least $14,000 has been deposited in just a few days”

1. Why did the bank not do some security checks when the accounts name is Mansfield and the payment names say Convoy 22.
2. How did RNZ “see evidence” of Mansfields private bank statements. How do they know he got $14000
Did they: A. Search his rubbish bins and find a bank statement? , B Did Mansfield share the information with the Convoy group and someone took a copy and squealed to RNZ? Or RNZ had their own person undercover in the group. If Mansfield did share the bank statements with the convoy group that would be to his credit and shows transparency. C Other?

When contacted by the journalists he said “When u are ready I would love to see the so called information u have got” “Then we will correct what is needed because i can guarantee you you do not have truthful information”.

So he clearly doesn’t know how they got his private bank details. Do rnz have the bank statements and also have the details of those who donated?

For those who did donate to the protestors and the convoy do you feel you got value for money given they achieved a complete removal of mandates from the government.

The one-size-fits-all fluoridation of Chch water is setting up to be an expensive exercise and is going to take forever to roll out.

At present it is expected to cost over $60M to set up (so call it $80M) and cost at least $2.5M a year (so call it $4M) and is expected to take 8 years (so call it 10 years) to roll out.

Given a Christchurch population somewhere near 400,000 people that’s a set up cost of $200 per person and a running cost of $10 per person per year.

Floride tablets can be bought retail for less than $8/100 – around $30 a year. If bought in bulk that would cost less than $10 a year – the same as fluoridation of the water.

So why not hand out “free” fluoride tablets? That would save $80M and could be done immediately – not waiting 10 years?

So the NZ Herald continues to follow TVNZ One News in ignoring what I foolishly thought was the prime objective of a news program/paper/website; namely, to inform their patrons clearly and without any confusion. To explain the issues and topics of the day, and inform us on current events, in a manner that is understandable by the broadest possible majority of people in their target audience.

Current headline on NZ Herald website: Maunga authority decides to appeal tree felling refusal

New Zealand being a multi-cultural society (Aisan, English, European, Maori, Pacific, Middle Eastern, Latin American, African, and more), I can’t help but wonder just how many people would know what a “maunga” is. If the NZ Herald wants to use Maori words and language in the article, then they could do so and give the English meaning at the same time. But this headline doesn’t do that, and so the reader is left wondering what this is about, and is it worth their time checking it out.

My answer is simple – if the headline doesn’t make sense, or I can’t understand it, why waste my time reading the article? It obviously can’t be important, or the editor would ensure that EVERYBODY could understand it. Decision made … I’m not going to read the article, given the headline fails to communicate clearly what it’s about.

    So, given that even the Government acknowledges that we are far from being a bi-lingual society, you have to wonder why the media do this. No one wants to discuss the Covid cult any more. This is understandable. If you have been the victim of a cruel hoax, I imagine that it is humiliating. The last thing you wish is to see your two-year dalliance with mental illness picked over in detail.

CAKE doesn’t want to humiliate anyone. Nonetheless, it is important to discuss the Covid cult, because it could happen again. Next time, we need people to act rationally. One case of the flu shouldn’t cause three months of lockdown for Auckland. Anyone who supported this and other absurd rules, needs to reflect upon their conduct over the past two years.

There are three main causes of mass formation:

1. Many socially isolated people – this is a sad part of modern life.

2. Little self-meaning in lives – 70% of people in one survey described their job as senseless. It is interesting to note that Covid cult fanatics often have completely nonsense jobs.

3. Widespread free floating anxiety disorder – anti-depressant taking is at an all time high. Note that “free floating” in this context means that the anxiety is generalised. Huge numbers of people are suffering in this manner.

Psychologists say that free-floating anxiety is an extremely painful condition, because there is no obvious cause or connection. This makes it extremely painful to endure. Because it is generalised in nature, there is no obvious source to be solved.

The Covid cult gives people with this free-floating anxiety an object to fixate upon, which provides an explanation and narrative of why they are unwell.

The Covid cult acts as a connection or bond to mitigate their anxiety disorder. Now they have a fear to fixate upon. They can then join the group, with a common enemy, to battle a new object – in this case Covid. Before, they lacked a social connection, but now they have one. This acts like an intoxication or hypnosis of the mind. It is almost impossible to rationally persuade people under the spell of this Covid cult that they are wrong, because if they accepted that they were wrong, they would go back into their free-floating anxiety state, which would be extremely painful.

This mass formation state narrows the field of vision to one thing only – just the Covid cult is important. All attention is on very few metrics inside the cult; any costs are completely ignored by the sufferer. This tunnel vision is not because the sufferer lacks empathy – they simply cannot see outside the mass formation. Leaders who protect the Covid cult then become adored, because again they are protecting these people from their anxiety disorder.

Of course, Cindy has explained how she couldn’t sleep due to suffering from imposter syndrome. Also, she explained that she suffered from what sounded exactly like a free-floating anxiety disorder.

This explains why New Zealand had the most extreme Covid cult rules in the world. In essence, Cindy was a super spreader, who spread her anxiety disorder to most of the people in the country.

The big question, of course, is whether we have learned anything from the past two years?

Is there anyone, who was previously a Covid cult member, who has now realised that it was all nonsense? Anyone at all?

Or do all the believers of the Covid cult still maintain it was correct all along?

CAKE would really like to know the answer to that question, from former cultists.

Alas, my suspicion is that nothing has been learnt. We will do it all over again; maybe soon.
