Ah, the highly influential Greens and their intrepid leader Shaw just really, really have to go to Glasgow to flex their muscle. The Ego has landed. . .it’s not enough that they want to screw up the New Zealand economy for no good purpose. They want bragging rights. Sigh.

In the Green world view (and many people I speak to, including seeing it written in newspapers), the logic is that we need global agreements because it’s a global problem. It’s OK to spend a bit of carbon if it leads to a deal that net reduces carbon – if NZ isn’t represented at this major international conference then our views won’t be heard. I’m somewhat sympathetic to this view, but then again, I’m not a rabid global warming alarmist.

The rest of the country see it a bit differently. We’re being told it’s an existential crisis and absolutely everything has to be done. It’s not enough to offset your emissions, your emissions must shrink, and must shrink rapidly.

Our farmers have the lowest greenhouse gas emissions per kg of animal protein in the world. So much lower than the second lowest (Ireland) that we can make a pound of butter and ship it to Ireland with still lower emissions than they can make butter. And they’re second best in the world. Any reduction in NZ butter production will increase carbon emissions of the world. It’s illogical to be the only country in the world applying emissions standards to farming, both because we’re punishing our farming sector, and because it’s net negative to the world. But the fundamentalists insist it must happen. Everything can be sacrificed.

In that world, people look askance when it turns out that you can actually make priority choices, trade off this against that. You can say “but for that conference, a zoom isn’t the same, I’ll fly to it.” So now we’ve agreed that climate change isn’t an existential crisis, it’s a series of tradeoffs. And really, we’re just arguing about the Green’s tradeoffs being different than mine. They think it’s important for Shaw and 14 hangers on to fly to a conference. I think it’s important to drive my V8 SUV (but I have pretty low emissions in other areas of my life). Who’s to say their tradeoffs are more important than mine?

Of course, the normal way we sort things out like this is with prices. The person who’ll pay the most gets to emit, because their use is highest value. Greens hate prices. They like inefficient central government controls, even though they result in less emissions reductions than properly thought through tools (like the ETS).

In short, hypocrisy, idiocy, hubris. All the reasons people don’t like Greens.

  Yup, and that is if you use their accounting methods (which are activist biased towards farmers are BAD)!
  
  Butter is almost pure fat (a negligible amount of water and milk solids). Fat is 80% carbon.
  
  Each gram of carbon is made by photosynthesizing 3.66g of CO2.
  
  Thus making one kg of butter removes 2.93 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere.
  
  At the current carbon price of $US65 per ton of CO2 (NB CO2, not carbon), a ton of butter should be earning a farmer almost $US200 of carbon credits.
  
  That is what science (ie. chemistry and biology) tells us. Of course the activists are saying cows create CO2 and farmers should be paying but they are not using science.
  
  PS: I made a previous posting a week or two about farmers and ETS and got the numbers wrong because I though the price was for carbon. It is not. The price is for CO2. That means my old numbers were off by a factor of 3.66.

  If Shaw had rejected the invitation, saying he refused to fly half way around the world for a talk fest, when we have technology that surpasses these 20th Century boondoggles, it would have gained more coverage and made more impact than he and his 14 adherents wandering around the ‘breakout’ sessions.

The problem is there is one law for the elites like James Shaw who can go on overseas junkets and get MIQ to return and one law for the rest of us who are constantly told to stay home.
We also note that Brian Tamaki and Co will be prosecuted for their protest the other day.
However we also note that Black Lives Matter held a huge protest last year under level 2, no crowds larger than 100. No charges were laid.

James Shaw could do a ZOOM meeting like all of us. He wants the adulation of the audience in Glasgow knowing he is a rank hypocrite and knows he has a guaranteed precious place in MIQ without having to take part in the obscene lottery.

There were two highlights for me in that vid: Firstly Shaw beneficently congratulating the Marshall Islands for organizing a virtual summit using Zoom technology; second the shots of parked up private jets at Davos and in the US.

I wonder if people like Shaw ever lie awake at night wondering if they are hypocrites and frauds? Probably not.

They remind me of the French Aristocrates in the late 18 Century who had their heads separated from the shoulders by the peasants.

Only one word to describe Shaw and his entourage: scum.
Lets hope they run into some citizens trying desperately to get home, but I expect that they’ll get hanging around in safety from the riff raff in business class lounges.

I recommend James visits the Torness Nuclear Power Station which is only about an hour by chauffeur driven limousine down the road from the conference venue.

Hang on… Is Shaw FLYING to Glasgow? I assumed that he was going to sail there and back, like Greta T did when she visited America. Why is sailing good enough for Greta, but not good enough for Shaw? Hasn’t anyone told him that we’re in the middle of a climate emergency?

Why are Greens always such big polluters?

Frankly, I find this less than humourous.

Shaw tells blatant lies and is not called out by the media. He’s doing this because there’s a fat salary to pull for very little work and he can depend on the brainwashed to vote for him.

Damn. Downvoted you in error cmm. I agree with you. If your world view is one that treats people by different standards, whether it’s affirmative action programmes or excusing Palestinian terrorism , then it’s perfectly reasonable to apply those standards to one’s self, particularly when one is on the side of the angels. The end always justifies the means. To the progleft that’s just how it is, however unhinged and offensive it is to decent folks.
