Education system grapples with te reorganization (ed Maori tikanga) and systemic racism.

Associate Minister ( Maori Education) Kelvin Davis says a suite of initiatives and tikanga into the education system should have been done years ago.

Teachers widely back the moves saying te reo Maori is making them better educators and awareness of unconscious bias is improving achievement, more than 300 schools or groups of schools have applied for Cultural Capabilitiy training this year alone.
Why is it alright for Maori MP’s to use racism to keep pushing their agenda and when Judith Collins uses it’s a sin and dividing New Zealander’s .

  There is so much debate about how the NZ Education is Monocultural. and benefits Pakeha.
  
  However, if the system benefits Europeans over non europeans, can we also explain the extraordinary levels of high achievement by Asian and Indian students who are educated in that same system?

  Of these 12 winners in 2020, 8 were Asian and 1 was Indian. Were they disadvantaged or did they grasp the opportunity afforded them?
  
  I believe that in the past, there were some terrible things done to Maori in the education system, and that this may have generational consequences regarding how Maori see education. We have since changed how the education system see’s Maori. We have yet to change how Maori see education, and that has to come from Maori themselves.

  There was a proposed scheme to take all of Auckland’s refuse by rail to the just closed Meremere. Do all the recycling and metal recovery, then burn the rest there in special incinerators. All the rail and grid links were in place. As you point out, it is what is done round the world.
  Guess who stopped it – the Greens of course. They started a big scare campaign that it would cause massive dioxin clouds and politicians ran away. The Greens had a hidden agenda that they don’t want sensible solutions to any problem. It has to be their way or none at all. A minority dictatorship.

  I have no doubt the story is true but there is a belief that all over New Zealand young and old Maori behaved in this way.
  I lived much of my early years with a river just over the bank. We were about half a mile downstream from a marae and often engaged in eel fishing at night. During the day we went swimming or caught (and released) bullies or elver. Sometimes we tried to catch smelt in the butterfly style hand -held nets.
  At no time did I ever see Maori, or even hear them mention, eeling.
  At that time it was possible to catch large eel with relative ease. Even in the daytime it was often possible to attract them with some sort of red meat.

    Mike is clearly literate, has a powerful sense of irony, and is usually well-informed about things, whereas SB sometimes appears to type his comments on a mobile while wearing wicket-keeping gloves, has no sense of irony or deliberate hyperbole, and occasionally either doesn’t read beyond the headlines of his links, or doesn’t understand what he has read.

The replies were mainly to the effect of “Wow Neve is advanced for her age” and “Why is Neve up so late” etc. I couldn’t see one complimentary one out of the many replies. What do they all do all day, apart from ensuring a constant flow of dollars into the Fiji economy?

Made me wonder how many are located in New Zealand (and what they do all day).

  If his hypothesis is correct, then I posit, anyone having an MRI, with magnetic fields in the 5-7 Tesla range (huge) would have had dramatic side effects. That doesn’t seem to be upheld in practice.

    There are very few MRI scanners in the 5 Tesla range or above and are mostly used in research. Given their strength of magnetic field they are very uncomfortable for patients and are known to induce feelings of disorientation, dizziness and nausea.

We are now staring at a massive spike in inflation and interest rates. It is a frightening prospect. The only positive is that Labour are going to have to answer for rapidly rising prices and a tanking economy at the polls.

On an annualised basis the USA is looking at 10% – something that was considered impossible a few months ago. The July number was 0.9% and its rising quickly. Biden (I should say his puppeteers) have goone nuts with wild spending that is equivalent to putting petrol on a fire. Inflation in the USA leads to inflation here.

We are doing our best to make it worse too. The Reserve Bank’s money printing and the inability of Labour to contain spending is leading to rising prices across the board. It is a dismal out look. Interest rate rises will follow. New home owners are in for a rough ride.

Inflation is thieving from your children and grandchildren. It is evil.

  If interest rates rise 2.5% there will be pandemonium. Many are strugggling to meet rates demands on time now, let alone increased insurance, maintenance, and then basic living costs.
  I remember having a place on the market years ago in Johnsonville, during a recession and there were people basically walking out of their homes in Grenada when they were in negative equity. We had a long time selling.
  Seems we are in for another dose of this medicine . . . thanks those who voted for these losers.

    IMO, the housing market should have been left to its own devices. To interfere and throw money at in order to put people in houses they can’t afford is ridiculous and at worst, soul-destroying.
    However, that’s what happens when you put children in charge of the purse strings. Especially when it’s only printed taxpayer money and those currently in charge will not be around to fix the problems caused.

    On the other hand people of my age experienced years of inflation 10-15% and more and know how destructive it can be, particularly in the hands of an incompetent government. In that case led by the National Party dominated by an overbearing PM/Min of Finance.
    There’s a big problem when no MPs, or not enough MPs, stand up to the leader; or in his case, when too much power is in one set of hands.

    On top of that there’s also huge personal debt through credit cards, loan sharks and such. 30 year/95% mortgages were not a thing back in the 70s.
    Now add to that a general increase in entitlement and softness and the hardship increases when stuff gets taken away. Will they be able to tighten their belts when needed?

  While this “government” is by far the worst in NZ history, under our silly system no accountability whatsoever will be demanded. MPs kicked out will retire with huge, life-long benefits – paid for by the very people whose lives and futures they’ve so determinedly worsened and imperilled.
  
  So isn’t it way past time we demanded accountability from the main players of inadequate administrations – something akin to serious criminal charges for the demonstrable abuses they’ve so incompetently inflicted?
  
  If capital punishment was the ultimate sanction, surely it would give every idiot inept who thought nothing more of the actual demands and requirements of parliament than posturing emptily and pretending they could fulfil and deliver the expected responsibilities (and there are so many of those dead-heads in this Labour administration) good reason to pause and deeply reflect on the possible consequences?

    MCos, it is not ‘doomsday’, it is plain economics. Ask any debtor how they got into financial trouble and they will commonly allude to ‘spending like there is no tomorrow’. I am glad I am out of the debt collecting business now, especially with mortgages being so risky. A lot of decent families will suffer.

    Inflation is probably in the govt interest, it ticks many boxes, it gives an excuse for mandatory wage increase, if they drive inflation from wages and cap house prices they can be seen to “fix” that problem, gives a good excuse for more govt control, sorts out the govt debt issue, and allows them to redistribute wealth.
    
    Of course all of those things don’t make poor people wealthier, it just impoverishes everyone. But hey ho.

    Muldoon didn’t fix anything.
    
    Inflation was running at about 16-17% when he impose the price freeze.
    Naturally prices didn’t go up, they were frozen.
    But it was like a stretched rubber band & as soon as the freeze was removed when National was given the flick, they shot right back up again by 20%.
    It took another 10yrs to sort out the wretched mess.

    The present economic situation is very simlar to the pre-Muldoon era; Unions now make economic policy, education is failing the children, the Hospitals and local bodies are grossly mismanaged.

    One can only imagine the truly calamitous state of the New Zealand economy, from 1973 (oil shocks) onwards, had National won the 1972 election.
    
    As Minister of Finance, the disastrous Muldoon would have brought the country to its knees, and Labour would have won the 1975 election in a landslide. (And, Muldoon most likely would never have become prime minister.)
    
    I doubt that anyone here, apart from your good self, thinks the oncoming inflation we are apparently going to experience will be tackled by way of a Muldoon-like wage and price freeze.

  I’ve been saying this for 12 months now, stagflation is coming. Expecting it to be close to 10% by Christmas. Of course it’s already here, it just hasn’t been picked up in the CPI yet because it’s a perverse measurement.
  
  Inflation always starts with assets with limited supply, housing, property, Bitcoin, classic cars, art, et al. Then it spreads to assets or services that bring a financial return, rental properties, SMEs, stocks and insurance products. Then to commodities, and only then into things monitored by CPI. When we see delays in goods and services that’s also a sign inflation is coming, time and money are two sides of the same coin.

I see that today is Pacific Island Apology day (4th time) whereby our wonderful Part Time Prime Minister apologises to the Pacific Island community, on behalf of the people of New Zealand, for upholding the Law on Immigration in the 1960s.
I wonder whether this includes the current estimated 14,000 illegal immigrants currently according you media figures yesterday.
Of the course, unproven, in the 1960s was that most were not Pacific Islanders – like now, and were treated differently.
What colour headscarfe will the PR people tell Jacinda to wear today, but it is still 2 years before the election so she will have to do it all again.
Is any Koha involved oh, will we not know ?

  NZ upheld the arrangements with the Pacific govts because those govts did not want their people emigrating. There were quotas by international agreement.
  
  In the islands themselves the opportunity to gain access to such a quota was frequently a matter of connections. Those who knew they did not have the clout, were severely unhappy and had no redress. If NZ immigration controls seem strict compared to the islands, ours were very relaxed. Even a foreign worker could find it difficult to get a permit to leave.
  
  The over stayers are a different matter. Once people are here it can be hard to get them physically to return particularly if relatives help hide them.
  
  No apology is wanted by the Island govts. Local stirrers again.

  From the paper:
  Perhaps the most serious danger is if you have an MRI scan, when the extremely powerful magnet in the machine would try to pull these magnetised particles out of your body and, in the case of the brain or spinal cord scan, immediate and possibly permanent damage could result.
  When other parts of the body are scanned, the results may be less noticeable in the short term, but become apparent later as an unexplained “idiopathic” illness.

    Dr Goldsworthy appears to have no knowledge of physical chemistry. And being an ex-academic, probably little real world experience. Nothing outside his bubble penetrates in.
    Covalent iron as in blood is not ferromagnetic. From not having paired electrons IIRC. Oxygenated haemoglobin and plasma are diamagnetic so very slightly repelled by a powerful magnet (like MRI). Deoxygenated haemoglobin is paramagnetic and very slightly attracted to the same. Water is diamagnetic. Aluminium is paramagnetic. What it all means is no risk from MRI or other magnetic fields. Not that it will stop tinfoil hat wearers claiming malign effects.
    You need to stop reading patents and the “new discoveries” scientific claims in obscure blogposts Kev. They invariably violate the laws of physics, as well as common sense. Believing; or even worse quoting them, just destroys your credibility.

But the elephant in the room is that her choices are why got her into this position.

If you don’t have the skills to earn enough money to pay for multiple kids, why have you had 4 kids?

If you knew you were struggling with 4 kids, why did you not take every precaution not to get pregnant with a 5th?

Why did you invite someone who clearly was not father material or long term partner/husband quality into your bed, multiple times, and why isn’t he providing for his tamariki?

You make $1225/week after tax from one job, way more than I do, and you work a second job on a casual contract (so 100 hours a week might be a stretch). Quite easily making $1500/week after tax. That’s really admirable and should be commended. But, your rent is $130/week. Admittedly 500/week daycare is a lot, but I know of no one who payed $130/week in rent since 2000.

She’s got debt, unspecified, another killer.

The argument is that she’s working really hard to make things work and should get more government support. I have huge sympathy for Rachel, but the issue is she should work hard to make things work. She’s already cashed in things being simple by apparently making poor choices, and the dividends poor choices pay is hard work.

The culture of having a lot of unprotected sex with a lot of people is one of the key drivers of poor wealth outcomes in NZ. All the risk of parenthood without the assistance of two breadwinners. Unfortunately some races are more likely to engage in this culture, but it’s not a race issue, anyone who engages in that, brown, white or purple, is playing with fire.

Finish high school well, get a job, and don’t have kids until you are married (or a long term committed relationship that will last as long as the kids are with you). Do those three things and you won’t end up in poverty in NZ.

They weren’t.. they just argued that MM does not provide a scientific methodology to investigate the Natural World.

  The sad thing here is that this is damaging both real science and the value of Matauranga Maori.
  
  If the Maori knowledge was attached to a proper scientific framework, and scientifically verified, then that would make it far more valuable. Of course much of it would be discounted in the process (just like folklore from any culture) but it could still keep its cultural value as folklore.
  
  It seems the activists are really objecting to subjecting Maori knowledge to any scientific scrutiny and projecting real science as a form of colonisation.
  
  Net result: everyone loses – even the activists lose in the long run.

    I am happy to be corrected but I don’t see how Maori developed science in any meaningful sense without a written language. How do you pass down the results of scientific experiment over hundreds of years. Or even 10 years in any way that is reliable?
    
    Observing the natural world is not the same as understanding it. Let’s take something basic. Earthquakes. Maori no doubt observed earthquakes. But I’m guessing they had no understanding of what caused earthquakes. They obviously knew there were stars in the night sky but they did not actually comprehend them or the relationship between the earth, sun, planets and stars.
    
    Maori obviously had “knowledge”. All indigenous people had knowledge of the world around them. But in the case of Maori it seems to have been fragmented and filled in with liberal doses of mythology.
    
    As I said, happy to be corrected if I am missing something.

      Without a written language and mathematics there is very little opportunity to conduct science.
      
      The lack of a written language has two main problems:
      1) There is no way to accurately record an details in observations and you end up remembering what you want to remember.
      2) The very symbols people use (ie the words and grammar) in a written language end up being more precise. In an unwritten language there is less precision and the meaning of words becomes fluid – meaning the very words themselves are poor for recording information – even when spoken.
      
      The lack of mathematics is also problematic because pretty much any theory, and scientific testing, requires some mathematical component.
      
      Without those, no science. There is only folklore.
      
      A written language and mathematics are also key to civilisation in general. Without them it is pretty much impossible to run any large organisation: city, country, military or large company such as the Dutch and, later, British East India Companies that were a force for progress in the world.
      
      Writing and mathematics were critical to the success of the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. They were critical to the Mayans. They were critical to all civilisations and all science through time.
      
      What we’re seeing at Auckland is a dumbing down of the definition of science so that folklore qualifies too.

An interesting article this am in stuff …… Yes I know they’re stuffed.

“In 1991, 311,000 of the 1.28m properties were rentals. That meant rentals made up 24 per cent of the housing stock.

But in 2021, 621,000 of the 1.87m properties were rentals, which meant 33 per cent of the housing stock were now rentals.”

Maybe if there were a few incentives or less disincentives to persue alternative retirement income streams the rental market may not be so attractive to ordinary Kiwis.

I know of many who rely in rental income to survive and it’s hard to break that cycle in NZ.

I also don’t agree totally with their opinion that the market has kept up to the extent that many renters would choose to buy if they were able.

With unfettered immigration until covid erupted, those immigranmts eventually seek to get onto the housing market and from what I see they have done well vis a vis house aquisition.

  There’s a lot of truth in lies, damn lies and statistics.
  
  For example how many of those 621,000 rentals are – social housing, employer provided, no rent paid or required, vacant, holiday or short term rentals, in trusts rented to beneficiaries (Briggs adjustment). Hundreds of thousands of trusts in New Zealand and almost all will include at least one residential property.

  Looking just at the headline number of “74% of cases were vaccinated” is not a good way to look at it.
  
  Consider this: if 100% of people were vaccinated, then 100% of cases would be vaccinated.
  
  The more accurate way to look at it would be to figure out the prevalence of cases in vaccinated vs non vaccinated people.
  
  Google tells me that 64% of Massachusetts are vaccinated.
  
  Therefore:
  * Vaccinated: 75% of the cases are in 64% of the population. Ratio: 1.17
  * Unvaccinated 25% of the cases are 36% of the population: Ratio 0.69
  
  On the face of it, getting vaccinated moves you from the second group to the first group and thus increases your chances of infection by 1.17/0.69 – 1= 1.70 – 1 = 0.7 ie. 70% INCREASE in the chance of infection vs being vaccinated.
  
  Of course there’s more to it than that because the vaccination has not been random, and nor has the testing for infections been random, but has been targeted at the most vulnerable. Therefore it would be disingenuous to draw too many conclusions from this.
  
  But what is clear is that this vaccination is nowhere near being the silver bullet solution to the CV19 pandemic that we were sold.

    My understanding is the vaccination isn’t a protection against catching the bug in the way the polio vaccine for example prevents poliomyelitis. However it greatly reduces the chances of severe symptoms.

    The vast majority of kids who caught polio never knew they’d had it and the death toll wasn’t huge. It was the lasting effects on some of the survivors that scared the shit out of the parents of this land.

    In a look at Israeli data, they difference between the percentage vaccinated and unvaccinated being infected with Covid was essentially nothing. That is, with vaccination running at around 80% of the population, approx 80% of new cases were from vaccinated people. The data was split by age cohort and though the results varied by age, the differences were not statistically significant.
    
    Conclusion, being vaccinated provides close to no protection from being infected. The data did not give enough info to determine if the symptoms were significantly different between the two.
    
    Which is surprising, the numbers in the study were quite large so it has statistical validity. Certainly the ratio of hospitalised/dying to cases is a lot lower now than it was a year ago, way lower. Whether that is because the current variant is far less lethal, or if a significant number of those most vulnerable died in the initial outbreak, or if the vaccine offers some protective effect is not known yet. One clue is that the ratio of deaths etc to cases is pretty much the same independent of the vaccination level of the population, so it does not appear to be that.
    
    What we really seem to need is some serious, independent and non-political reviews of what the data we have (and there is a lot, albeit pretty poorly collected often – deaths with and of Covid being an obvious example, plus the fact the data collection on vaccine side effects seems to be voluntary just about everywhere) so that rational and science based decisions can be made. But we don’t seem to have that and efforts to provide same seem to being sidelined in favour of political decisions.

    Fires are usually controlled in one of two ways, by lowering the temperature to prevent ignition, or by removing either the fuel of the oxidant.
    
    For petrol fires, methods that exclude air which is the oxidant usually are effective in putting the fire out fairly promptly – so CO2 or dry powder work by smothering the fire. Water typically works by rapidly cooling the fuel but can also exclude oxygen.
    
    With a battery, the fuel and oxidant are effectively mixed, so it is effectively impossible to remove one or other. Thus cooling the mixture to below ignition temperatures is typically used. Trouble is battery fires can be very hot and take a lot of cooling, plus for some, water is another source of oxidant. And the cooling mst continue after the fire is out to prevent heat building up and igniting again.
    
    Battery fires are difficult to deal with.

  Lithium Ion batteries for mass storage is at best idiotic not to mention super expensive. Lithium Ion cells rapidly heat to over 500 degC when exposed to oxygen. Tesla batteries have to have liquid coolant pumped around them to stop them failing FFS.
  There are sane alternatives like Lithium Titanate Oxide, which are 4x times the size of LiOn cells but that doesn’t matter in a permanent installation.

A question about the resentment of Pacific Islanders about the immigration dawn raids, a resentment that Red Radio fuels and fuels and fuels.

Yes it may have been frightening. But if you have suspected working illegal immigrants, when do you visit and question them? Early morning, at work, or in the evening. If you visit them at work that may cost them their jobs, or, if they’re not illegals, affect their relations with fellow workers.

Any time is unnerving, and I know of being on the end of an immigration “raid” overseas, when New Zealanders were part of the suspected illegals. It’s scary if you’re illegal, and you feel angry if you’re not.

Also, Red Radio reports consistently state that Whites suspected of being illegal immigrants were not targeted.

I’m not sure if the dates synchronise with the Auckland raids, but in one local case I’m aware of the German family in rural Canterbury, including children born in NZ, who were deported because the father hadn’t reported drug (marijuana?) convictions in Germany many years, even decades, before. Have any of Jacinda’s Jackals of the MSM checked this thoroughly?

The Minister of Immigration at the time was Maori.

Was pre-Red, pre-Maori Radio NZ shouting “racism!”. Of course not.

It sounds to me that the subliminal message in the Red Radio-Pacific Islander campaign over those now-historically old immigration raids, is open the border to Polynesian Islanders.

  Why would you go through all the hassle of having a potentially dodgy tenant (and all the hassles of dealing with them and potentially trying to evict them), when the property is earning nicely through capital appreciation alone?

    Maybe the rentals are empty until they go on the market when the bright line tax period expires. Because why pay six figures* to the government when you can wait a bit longer and keep the lot. Selling up is one of the few reasons tenancies can be terminated these days.
    
    *4 or 5 years capital gain in this market – in many many cases easily 6 figures at 33% / 39% tax.

Anyone else wondering why a health worker with a minor PPE issue was sent to the plague-pit at the airport rather than a MIQ facility

On Friday night, the Ministry of Health said a health professional at Middlemore Hospital had been placed in quarantine “as a precaution following a PPE protocol incident during the management of a COVID-19 patient”.

The ministry later confirmed the worker in question was part of the team helping treat the patient from Fiji, though insists “any risks from this incident are low”.

Rather odd that the default presumption is infected if it was such a minor incident

How dumb of me. I thought the covid vaccine jab was to protect people from catching this deadly and dangerous delta strain and a second jab would keep people safe forever!

I must be even dumber because I thought that if say 50% of the people in Victoria, NSW, and Queensland have at lest one jab then they would be less likely to catch the virus and their would be no need for locking down 10-15 million people but Aust is worst off than last year when no vaccines were available!

Is the reality vaccines don’t protect people from catching the virus or is the reality covid/delta strain strikes some people vaccinated or not regardless of lock downs or social distancing?

  Sorry this is old news. The vaccines make it less likely that you will catch the virus. But not by much. The big benefit is to protect against serious illness and death.
  
  The other thing that has changed in the last week is that data in usa shows if you are vaccinated and you DO get the virus, you are still highly contagious.
  
  This week the CDC has recommended that fully vaccinated people start wearing masks again. Indefinitely.

    Given that masks have been demonstrated (over and over again) to be ineffective against aerosolized viruses like Covid, why ?
    
    Benedict, the claim is that the vaccine makes you more resilient to the infection, but I don’t think that is proven. As I note above, the cases to hospitalisation/death ratio for highly vaccinated and relatively lowly vaccinated populations looks to be pretty similar right now, with the notable exception of India. But India is more or less in its “first wave” as it hasn’t had the earlier surges common to many other countries.
    
    Be very useful to know if the vaccinated are protected, but the lower number of deaths etc at present to cases could have a number of explanations, and you certainly would expect highly vaccinated populations to have lower case/death ratios – which is not obvious from the data as far as I can see.

ME: This seems confusing. If the poke doesn’t stop mutations, and it doesn’t stop infections, then how does me getting poked help prevent a more deadly strain from evolving to escape the poke?

ME: But what KIND of threat??
CDC: The threat that they could get a serious case of Covid and possibly die.

  5. In Jan 2021 there were 60,000 new cases a day – As of today there are 26,000 new cases a day
  
  6. In Jan 2021 the mortality rate to cases was 1250/60000 or 2% – As of today the mortality rate is 75/26000 or 0.2%.
  
  So those actually dying (and probably hospitalised) are more likely to be unvaccinated

    See above Benedict. If the vaccine helps, then the proportion of those hospitalised with Covid should be higher amongst the unvaccinated, and yet that is not yet apparent in the figures.
    
    This is complicated because the actual recording of cases and their prior vaccination status is not very rigorous, so there’s a lot of uncertainty in the figures.
    
    Believing or wishing that the vaccination is beneficial is no substitute for having the actual data to show that it is. And I think it is important that we know this for certain.
    
    If for example having been vaccinated provides no benefit in terms of immunity or reduced symptoms, then why the hell would you administer it ?
