See the government is trumpeting planned “safety improvements” on the Napier Taupo highway – emphasis on planned. This includes lowering the speed limit for which consultation submissions have only just closed. As many expected, the decision is pre-ordained. Not being open and transparent but no surprises there.
“The project could include median barriers, side barriers, wide centrelines and intersection improvements, which would complement the current speed proposal and other smaller-scale improvements. “
Nothing about fixing the potholes, straightening the road at Te Haroto or getting rid of the Tarawera hairpin – all major accident causers. Even the Hastings mayor was cynical, which upset the MPs because she wasn’t being a lapdog.
Yet another one of the government’s “all press releases and no real action” jobs. They have the gall to admit they have had no fatalities in recent times without the promised safety improvements which sort of defeats the need for them. But contradictions like that don’t worry a kind and caring Ministry.

      If you had actually driven the road recently, you would know those side barriers through the bends at Te Haroto are like driving in a trench. What drivers I have followed do is move away from the side walls into the middle of the road, making a head-on more likely. There is not enough room to put median barriers. To fix it, they only have to cut away the northern bank to straighten the road. It would cost a lot less than all the barriers they put through there. But sensible ideas like that never see the light of day at a woke Tranzit.

  Consultation is a joke, they do what they want and make justifications. There is zero accountability.
  
  On a major road near where I live a redevelopment took place, a bypass of sorts. All the 70 and 80 signs were replaced on the old road with 60 signs with 70/80 stickers over the top. 5 months later a consultation rolled around. Most were opposed but have a guess what the speed limit went to…..

  I have driven that road a few times. Reducing the speed limit to 80 is absurd. Yes in some sections, and in bad weather 80 or lower is the safe speed. Only morons drive at 100 all the time because that is the speed limit. The solution is to aggressively target moronic drivers. But no they will reduce the speed limit on a major highway and set up speed patrols to ticket offenders.

  At the recent National Party regional conference in Napier, it was suggested that the reduced speed limit on the Napier-Taupo Road had an ulterior motive.
  
  Taupo MP Louise Upston is doing such a fantastic job as buddy MP for the Napier and Tukituki electorates, that Labour had to slow down her trips on the road and limited the time she spent in the Bay!

    I drove the Nelson to Blenheim road (and back) recently. I thought my cruise control was going to go out on strike.
    I have never seen so many speed limit changes – sections of 30, 50, 60, 70, 80 and there was one piece that was 100.

      A fun road: as a youngster I hitchiked over it c. 1953 when I was taken from the Taupo entry, to Napier in 1 hr 35min in a Volkswagen Beetle.
      Later had the experience of sleeping out in a milk can pickup platform on the Rangitaiki Plains one night. An exciting place for motoring.

        That Beetle must have had some driver!
        I travelled the road often in my younger days. My father was a quick driver but two and a half hours was what it took in the Mk 1 Zephyr in the late fifties.
        In the eighties after all the new deviations were finished I got it down to about an hour 20 but needed to be doing 130-140 on the straight bits to achieve that.
        Are you sure your 1hr 35 in 1953 wasn’t actually 2hrs 35?

        I recall being in my Fathers Holden Special travelling that road in the late 60’s. It took around 3 hours plus.
        Even normal driving today is probably an hour 20.
        My record is 53 minutes but that involved some speeding…
        Admittedly leaving at 7 am on a Sunday helped.

        Kev, a 1953 VW Beetle was all out at about 105k. that time is impossible.
        And All on Red’s memory is playing tricks on him. 93 miles in 53 minutes is just as much of a stretch.
        My best is an hour and 8 minutes in a car that was capable of 265 k and got close to that in a couple of places.

        A lot of people who claim the very fast times see the trip as Opepe to the SH2 intersection, disregarding the 15 minutes each end.
        Driving at the current speed limit where I could and not being stuck behind trucks anywhere, I generally do almost exactly 90 minutes central Taupo to CBD edge Napier. There are too many revenue gathers on the road to go faster. Not unusual to see two speed camera vans and two marked cop cars. There will probably be an unmarked one as well.

        I know that road well having driven it for 40 years, and no cars at 7 am helps

        OK AoR, getting closer but Westshore pub is cheating a bit. I used to time it to Pandora Point (Pettigrew’s Corner). And my time was set in early nineties, road is a bit better now.

        I’ve kept that number in my head but it was a very long time ago. We were doing over 80 mph even on tight bends. The car had amazing performance, it was low to the ground and that road was not pleasant occasion. It had to be a racing car driver as he stated from the way it was handled.
        It’s possible I’m wrong about the timing.

        When I transferred to Taupo in 1967 I used to allow 3 hours Taupo to Waipukurau in my Hillman Imp. An hour to Tarawera, an hour to Napier and and hour to Waipukurau.
        
        Most trips, on a Friday evening, I beat those times but not by a hell of a lot.
        
        Much the same times gonign the other way as well.

  Glad they have supplied the CCTV footage. Good chance someone knows the person and will recognise from that.
  Unprovoked attacks, especially resulting in traumatic brain injury, are not just assault.
  I would suggest penalties should be in a similar league to sexual assault/rape in terms of the blamelessness of the victim, the brutality of the offender and long term damage that results.
  Hence I was one KB poster here on the divisive idea of a cowards punch needing to be recognised in law; very much Pro.

  Here in Masterton we also are on level 2. There has not been a single case of Covid in the Wairarapa for about a year! Someone sniffles in Sydney and suddenly they are wearing masks in the Warehouse in Masterton, the café’s are enforcing social distancing, catering businesses are going to lose money this weekend, people are in fear. For what?
  
  In the news media we have panic porn, we are all going to die because of the delta variant.
  
  One thing they did say sensible was that it shows the urgent need to be vaccinated. But our government is the slowest in the OECD for getting us vaccinated.
  
  There seems no urgency on the vaccination. The government appears to like being in control and telling us what to do and keeping us in fear. Am I wrong?

      Obviously easy and sensible and relaxed for you Batman. Here in the real world, one local guy relies on weekend events where he has a catering business. He will get no income this weekend as events are cancelled.
      At sky Stadium there will be no spectators for the Maori all Blacks game. So again all those caterers, who have probably already ordered the food, will get no business and the staff will get no work.
      All churches over 100 people will have to cancel their services or put them online or divide them into groups of less than 100.
      
      All this for one person who tested positive in Sydney after visiting Wellington. Who had one shot of the vaccine. Who to this moment appears not to have infected a single person with the virus!
      
      There is caution and there is obsessive craziness! And at the same time we get all these panic porn headlines about the deadliness of the Delta variant.
      
      I think the government is showing the people who is boss. The spirit of socialist control is alive and well and living in the People’s Republic of Aotearoa.

        IMO the PM panicked & bought the COVID KoolAid back in march 2020 when she returned from Australia after her 6 week holiday, and was brought up to date with overseas news.
        The thought of being blamed for the Pandemic reaching these shores threw her into a panic.
        What to do?
        We all now know what she did. The impositions, the rules. But the icing is dripping off the cake, and scepticism is on the rise. Levels are being more honoured in the breach than the rule, and still the population seems to be surviving.
        I think a good number of people may be thinking – hey, all these ‘cases’, and no-one is getting sick? What’s the true story here?

The useless Wellington City Council has declared that three quarters of heritage suburbs may now be clear-felled as of right. Don’t they understand that character is part of the city? Overseas, people enjoy London and San Francisco for their built history. Places like central Nottingham or Plymouth, where a combo of the Council & the Luftwaffe see bypasses and high rises, are off the tourist list.

The real solution to increasing population numbers in Wellington, if you believe the predictions, is more housing in the Hutt Valley & up the coast. Not 12 story buildings in Mt Victoria.

  Yes and there is plenty of land in those areas. But those people will travel and commute in cars. And because they will need a million dollar mortgage they will not be able to afford an EV. So they would be evil.
  
  James Shaw has this line that he repeats. “We need to provide people with better choices. Public transport, cycling and walking”. He could add “and if you continue to make bad choices I am going to force you to make the right choices.”

    James Shaw is being quite rational. Those pesky private cars on the road get in the way of the Crown Limo that carts him around. Spoils his smooth ride you know.
    I am sure James would like to have the system that I am told they had in Moscow. Special lanes on the roads that were reserved for the Limo’s of the political VIPs. I believe they were known as Zil or Chaika lanes.
    Of course in Wellington they would require the whole of the road but he would be quite happy with that I suppose. Common people shouldn’t have cars.

      Wellington has no real hope of major growth as realistically only low rise will be appropriate.
      Personally I think with low rise you can create a greater sense of community compared to a high rise environment.
      They should start moving some of the Government departments out- Palmerston Nth would be just punishment.

  The City needs a serious look at itself. The roads cannot be further extended. It’s like a dodgem rink, adding another vehicle takes physical space which reduces the freedom of all to move. It’s also seen in computer coding for limited memory as we once had. Modules cannot all be executed at once and buffers are required. Traffic controls don’t do that, they just impede the flow of traffic and allocate space in their controlled stretch of road. To enter or exit requires buffer (holding) space. That got nixed in the inner areas because of the building on the reclaimed land.

  As a parent who has had a child that has had 2 major operations and many minor operations I can safely say that the facilities at Starship are in desperate need of an upgrade.
  
  That said the staff and the foundation do the most incredible job with the resources that they have. There are many an unsung hero in those wards much more deserving or new years honors than the normal political and establishment creatures that do get gongs.
  
  As for your question – kids don’t vote nor do they control the narrative with regards to national discourse.

  To be fair, there is a fairly low bar for staff illness at testing facilities. As to if the chap in question ‘had covid’, that’s a pretty flexible question. If the Ct value of the test kits was above 16-24 (unsure what is used in Oz. Suspect ~35) then a past inflection or non-Covid coronavirus inflection could return a +ve even if he was totally asymptomatic.

      We are all being blindsided. Even the inventor of the PCR test said that it was no appropriate to be used for Covid 19 testing – that was not the purpose for it to be designed.

But – She, like many others, chose to use the term “lone” actor terrorist.
It’s well and truly time to call it a day with that phrase.
Far-right extremism is a collective identity.
It is what the Christchurch terrorist subscribed to, as did the man who recently killed a Muslim family in Canada. The terrorist who carried out the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting was a white supremacist just like the 2011 Norway attacker. [1]

So, please tell us about the corollary – why are so many Islamic killers described as mentally unwell “lone” wolves? Although each seems to be an Islamic supremacist?
While Mahvash Ali may wish to combine her enemies under one label. is the media here in describing mental conditions and lone actions, endeavouring to stop New Zealanders from doing the same.
Just wondering.

    A common vision of a state, and it tangibly existed for a time.
    Can you really say there some pervasive right wing organisational structure existing purely by via internet forums meaning right wing extremists can’t be LONE actors, yet killers driven by a formalised collective ideological and religious belief, who at the end cry ‘I did this for ISIS!’ are not lone wolves (when they operate as cells of 1)?

    Yvette is bang on about the lack of self awareness in a Muslim who insists on terrorist actions reflecting on a larger shared community: accountable therefore & needing to be focused upon.
    
    This Tarrant chap was self funded, and not part of a command structure – unlike some Jihadis in Europe have proven to be.
    While some jihadis are lone actors, but that is also a tactic around being harder to track – ISIS told them to resort to cars and knives, and strike at home rather than overseas. They are still following orders, or at the very least some are pitiful creatures hitching themselves to a band wagon.
    In contrast, Brevik or Tarrant have NEVER been proposed to be part of a conspiracy, there was no membership to anything. or allegiance claimed, nor others being sought in relation to their act.
    A linkage to a large ‘thing’ is so much clear in the case of Islam since there are so many examples to choose from, albeit a spectrum of direct structural interconnectedness or not.
    If right wingers aren’t allowed to be called lone wolves, then no jihadi should ever have an excuse no matter how they operate.
    
    I am stilled annoyed that this arsehole who shot up the mosques came from overseas to do it here – he didnt even have a link to the country beyond seeing us as a target, and yet we are expected to do some searching of our conscience like it has something to do with problems in NZ society.

      This corona virus is related to the common cold, not the common ‘flu which takes about a year to develop a new strain. Covid can produce variants quicker than they can be identified, and certainly by the time a new vaccine is developed it is out of date.
      Perhaps we should judge our risk of infection by the number of ‘colds’ we would get in a year.

They had a caucus meeting. Trevett in the Herald said one MP described it as a “brutal” caucus meeting in which he was given the ultimatum of either walking or being suspended from caucus.”

So details of the secret caucus meeting made it out.

Today Trevett says: “Barbara Kuriger is understood to be the National MP who dobbed in Todd Muller …”

The next caucus meeting will be exciting.

Hang on a minute, I thought Labour’s Finance Minister Grant Robertson in particular, and PM Jacinda Ardern occasionally, smile and cheerfully say that the NZ economy is doing well thanks to their stewardship whenever asked by the MSM.

If that’s the case, how come Grant Robertson is asking for options to reduce the Defence Capability Plan ($20b over 10 years)?

According to Defence Minister Peeni Henare: “There are a number of options that have been presented to the minister of finance and … it is now in his hands really and ultimately Cabinet will have to make that decision.”

I’m sure National and ACT could have a field day, quoting Roberston & Ardern repeatedly saying the economy is doing fine – so why the change?

A couple of other things, the Australia to NZ ratio for defence expenditure was roughly 1:5 (to 1:6 etc) in previous times (which more-or-less equates to the population ratio difference), however over the last decade or so the Australians have ramped up their defence expenditure 1:10 seeing NZ lagging behind. The lag is now much greater (over the last few years) …. so how can Peeni Henare say our allies “will understand” when what has been happening is that NZ has been reducing defence expenditure to around 1% of GDP – that’s just enough for basic UN peacekeeping operations?

Meanwhile we have the CCP flexing its muscles in the wider Asia-Pacific region and is attempting to gain footholds in our nearby Pacific neighbourhood. If anything NZ should be increasing defence expenditure to reassure our South Pacific neighbours that we have their backs!

And sure whilst there is no immediate threat, we are witnessing large CCP fishing fleets (200+ boats) accompanied by armed CCP “Coast Guard” vessels plundering fishing stocks in the wider region – how long before they weave their way through the South Pacific?

We also have had CCP long range bomber aircraft flying around Indonesia/Northern Australia on training exercises … hello if this isn’t ringing alarm bells in the Beehive (as logically they could fly over our Pacific neighbours – NZ’s forward front line) then in what cloud cuckoo land are our politicians living in, devoid of any reality?

C’mon National and ACT – call the government out!

A Systematic Review, Meta-analysis, and Trial Sequential Analysis to Inform Clinical Guidelines

Therapeutic Advances:
Meta-analysis of 15 trials found that ivermectin reduced risk of death compared with no ivermectin (average risk ratio 0.38, 95% confidence interval 0.19–0.73; n = 2438; I2 = 49%; moderate-certainty evidence). This result was confirmed in a trial sequential analysis using the same DerSimonian–Laird method that underpinned the unadjusted analysis. This was also robust against a trial sequential analysis using the Biggerstaff–Tweedie method. Low-certainty evidence found that ivermectin prophylaxis reduced COVID-19 infection by an average 86% (95% confidence interval 79%–91%). Secondary outcomes provided less certain evidence. Low-certainty evidence suggested that there may be no benefit with ivermectin for “need for mechanical ventilation,” whereas effect estimates for “improvement” and “deterioration” clearly favored ivermectin use. Severe adverse events were rare among treatment trials and evidence of no difference was assessed as low certainty. Evidence on other secondary outcomes was very low certainty.

Conclusions:
Moderate-certainty evidence finds that large reductions in COVID-19 deaths are possible using ivermectin. Using ivermectin early in the clinical course may reduce numbers progressing to severe disease. The apparent safety and low cost suggest that ivermectin is likely to have a significant impact on the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic globally.

  It’s damned weird isn’t it? – I think it is an emergent phenomenon from people too scared of speaking out within the confines of bureaucracies that punish heterodox thought (through limiting advancement or even firing of dissenters). A few life-long bureaucrats and political appointees near the top are owned by their relationships with Big Parma (and beneficial financial links to same) and dictate the acceptable beliefs to all their underlings and by extension the entire govt/media establishment.
  
  These power-brokers venal interests have effectively shut-down the functioning of the scientific method in their world, overriding all evidence pointing to the benefits of these drugs and as a result cost a couple of million extra deaths and possibly a long-extended covid pandemic over the last year.

  Meanwhile the internet is awash with replicated articles saying “Vaccination is the only hope of stopping Covid-19.” Despite the fact people are stilling dying that have been vaccinated. The argument that is starting to appear is, that because Covid-19 is exceedingly cunning, for the vaccine to be more effective, people will need to be vaccinated on a regular basis. Say every 90 days.

      I guess all those thousands of people who had Covid and have been saved by Ivermectin and Doxycycline, can put it all down to ‘spontaneous remissions’.
      
      Military personnel and Doctors from around the world take Doxycycline on a daily basis while in underdeveloped countries, and have done for decades. Likewise saved from parasites, Malaria, Ebola and other parasitical “viruses” in similar ‘spontaneous remissions’. The Covid-19 virus behaves like a parasite which is why these and other drugs work so well.

What a load of bollocks!

Maybe someone should remind him that it is the many thousands of New Zealand businesses, big and small, which keep the country going and this in spite of the worst Government our country New Zealand, has ever seen.

It is these companies who employ the people and who generate the taxes which this Government is hell bent on spending on projects many of which any successful company would laugh at!

Many of these companies have been innovative in overcoming obstacles caused by the epidemic entirely by their own innovations.

So to Mr Robertson, next time you stand up at Question Time, please tell the world that you and your Government have done nothing to support theses companies but instead to sincerely thank them for making life so easy for you!

  Plastic in oceans is a problem that isn’t. It’s not like it just keeps on accumulating endlessly on the ocean surface, it quickly starts to grow barnacles that increase density to point that it sinks to sea floor. where it will get covered over by other organic detritus over coming decades and milenia.
  The sea floor is utterly incredibly vast and mostly entirely featureless with little life – surviving on food that falls from above.
  
  The problem is people thinking emotively on the subject and not grasping the scale of the planet or how vanishingly insignificant the purported problem really is. Personally I think we should generally try to not dump too much shit in the ocean if we like clean coastlines, but not go too nuts about it – keeping some balance and recognising that almost all of the real issues spring from a few 3rd world rivers and almost all the downside is localised to the shores of those same countries.

  ACT leader David Seymour has said the Government wanted to pass a law “where insulting someone could land you in jail for longer than assaulting them”.
  “Protecting our right to freedom of expression while balancing that right with protections against ‘hate speech’ is something that requires careful consideration and a wide range of input,” Faafoi said, in the statement.
  The Ministry of Justice would receive public submissions on the law change, up until August 6.
  Alongside this, the Government would also seek public submissions on what changes people could be made to make New Zealand more socially cohesive.
  
  Is this another “national conversation” that will falter – like that on Capital Gains Tax – because Government lacks the confidence to propose some clear changes for people to actually discuss.
  
  May we only hope that, just as she flung Capital Gains Tax completely out of the cot as –Ardern said the Government simply didn’t have the mandate to implement such a tax, as so many Kiwis were against one.
  I look forward to her saying “Under my leadership, we will no longer campaign for, or implement ~~a capital gains tax~~ hate laws – not because I don’t believe in it, but because I don’t believe New Zealand does.”
  It could perhaps be the only Government non-delivery the country can welcome.

    JP did say it was satire, the actual time spent with testicles is beyond satire, it is a biological fact she has had a massive advantage over her competitors.

  – All the measures to undermine property rights and turn us into a nation of rental apartment dwellers.
  – Signing the UN’s Compact on Regular Migration in order to facilitate the above
  – All the measure to convert pasture to pine, including selling off swathes of farmland overseas provided it’s converted to forestry, inevitably monoculture pine
  – All the child abusive education programmes.
  And for only making an issue about anything important (no, whinging about the borders doesn’t count), in order to steal ACT’s thunder …

  Does Hooten think it’s ok to have his mate Muller leak to the MSM, dissing the incoming Harete Hipango? Making National look like a bunch of leaking/disloyal clowns? Allowing the MSM to have field day writing stories after stories about them (and not in a good way)?

  I would go further and have Muller leave National a lot sooner (than the 2023 election). Yes there will be a by-election, but as long as National selects a respected and well known candidate then what’s the harm?
  
  Muller’s thoughtless has caused National so much damage and dissing Harete Hipango was totally uncalled for. Why? Why did Muller think that’s a good thing to do?
  
  Muller is also tone deaf. When he did his coup last year the MSM gleefully noted the lack of Maori in his shadow cabinet (Bennett gone, only Bridges there) and rightly or wrongly he was portrayed as “stale, pale, male”. It’s identity politics nonsense of course, but the MSM’s headlines were on these sorts of issues – not National’s messaging! And Muller showed he could not stand up to it – just hopeless!
  
  With Muller leaking against Harete Hipango (again, why, is he a bully?), again he comes across being not very supportive of Maori. Yes identity/ethnic politics shouldn’t be prominent, but it is, unfortunately when it comes to MSM/messaging. It hurts National more than it helps them. It also shows Muller is a fool.   For whatever people may think of Hooton, one point he made really does ring true. In a week where the nats were given a raft of issues they could work with to get stuck into the government on, they couldnt even mount any sort of credible opposition as they were (again) too focused on themselves.
  
  They need to seriously heal their divisions and fast. Otherwise the next election will be here before they know it. I’m not sure Collins consolidating her power by forcing Smith and Muller out is going to bring the two sides together (Even though i am not a fan of either of them).

1) New location of interest in Wellington is the mens public toilet at Wellingotn Airport regarding the Covid scare (lucky to have this government to save us – sarc). Peter Davis was seen at the Wellignton airport during the time in question – just saying.
2) Has anyone in media noticed or been able to figure out that the Government has spent more on feel good storys/paid advertorials about housing, than acute mental health care beds. Is that newsworthy?

My prediction

Expect Todd Muller to become a bigger headache for National than Jamie Lee Ross.

Muller is out, but on his way out on his terms, he will not leave until the next election and will spend his time undermining the National party. He believes National is not going in the correct direction(climate change, Maori sovereignty), he will make it his political legacy to do his best to try and correct that.
If that means destroying the party so be it.

Egotistical narcissists like Muller cannot be reasoned with, the only option will be to waka jump the man and force a by-election.

  All we knew was that he’d resigned effect two years hence. (Nick Smith was gone by lunchtime)
  Now the circumstances that led up to his resignation are gradually being leaked & it’s not pretty with a certain amount of arse covering going on.

  Judith has plenty of skill and nous. I suspect she is riding the waves at present as the govt is self destructing. Hiding major policy action which requires the prior consent of the nation is subversive. Eventually Labour will offend Maori too. Who gets the spoils from the proposed handover has yet to be decided. With 7 tribes some are going to seek more. Mere mere was a former way of settlement.

Regular Kiwibloggers will recall that yesterday, I posted an article titled “America’s Red-Blue Vaccine Divide”, which showed that vaccination rates in Red states were well below that of Blue states, and which suggested reasons for that.

Well, folks, here’s proof of one of those reasons, “that Trump lied and downplayed COVID because he feared it would foil his reelection […].”

Just reading up on the Government wants to make major changes to the laws governing hate speech in their announcement today

As I identify (and are) as a white colour skinned heterosexual male, under these proposed changes, people spouting the idea of “white privilege” should be charged under the changes to the law Labour are proposing. The changes add ‘stirring up’ as inciting racial disharmony along with its “attempts to normalise hatred” of specific groups of people.

So Stuff.co.nz business model is in trouble if these changes go through.

It would/should also be illegal to discriminate against people that don’t have certain group characteristics when it comes to job hiring such as government agencies recruiting for certain diversity quote reasons such as specifically employing/appointing women, maori or pacific island rather than the best person for the job which is real equality regardless of meeting a group discrimination identity/flavor.

Looking forward to it being tested to show that hate speech is just speech that the left don’t agree with.

  Associate Minister for Social Development and Employment Priyanca Radhakrishnan, who is leading the social cohesion programme, told a media conference this morning government wanted to build from existing Māori-Crown values.
  
  “We are not starting from scratch,” she said. “We are generally regarded as a country with a high level of social cohesion and we’ve seen that as our team of 5 million has largely come together to rally around both in the aftermath of March 15 and also during the Covid-19 lockdown.”
  
  However, she said there were underlying vulnerabilities that New Zealand needed to address as the country grew in diversity and that this effort would be grounded in the values of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Māori-Crown relationship. [1]
  
  I call “bullshit” on the term “team of 5 million” – immediately following the March 15 attacks most New Zealanders were shocked and showed sympathy and sorrow for those involved, but all doing this at the same time wasn’t anything really to do with teamship. And responding to covid, it appears the majority of people complied with requests because they were reasonable and logical steps to preserve our safety. “Team of 5 million” will surely only apply to “hate speech” if there is reasonable and logical arguments to support any laws.
  
  But an impertinent question – If “hate laws” relate to treatment of individual groups, why are Maori values being so lauded, as above, and will any voiced objection to this actually offend against the proposed laws?
  
  Making clearer what behaviour the law prohibits and increasing the consequences for breaking the law
  I would think a very precise definition of unlawful behaviour is required because – This proposal would increase the maximum penalty for the new criminal offence to three years imprisonment, or a fine of up to $50,000.
  So I challenge Jacinda Ardern to define “hate speech”, as her last attempt – when she identified the “threshold” between reasonable criticism and hate speech as: “When you see it you know it.” [2]
  and does the last phrase not mean “When I see it I know it.”

  He has plenty of toys.
  Don’t suppose he would miss some if they disappeared.
  He’s bright enough but there is no way he would think he might give toys away to other children for some reason like a tornado.

And yet – there are still many hospitalisations and deaths in the UK, with people who have had the vaccine. Rona is not going away.

The only politically correct opinion to hold on the Rona in NZ is that we should hide under our beds – forever.

  I only partially agree with you. Yes covid will become endemic in New Zealand. But the vaccine will drastically reduce serious illness and deaths. I don’t think the PM understands that we cannot “eliminate” the virus.
  
  However you are wrong about the effectiveness of the vaccine in the UK. Since February, hospitalisations and deaths have plummeted.

    I suspect that it depends on how you count the deaths.
    
    Do people predominantly die WITH Rona, or do people die FROM Rona? My suspicion is its mainly the former.
    
    Vaccinated people still catch Rona, and vaccinated people still die (from their average three co-morbidities).
    
    The bottom line is – people will still die after vaccination, and their deaths could be attributed to Rona.
    
    I want the government to commit to opening the borders by the end of the year (when everyone who wants to be vaccinated has been).
    
    Obviously, I’d prefer vaccination was quicker, and open borders could come sooner, but the government is dragging things out, possibly on purpose…
    
    I suspect Ms Ardern is going to keep the borders shut, even after mass vaccination.

I’ve believed for awhile that Ms Ardern is a fake, a phoney and a fraud. Of late, I’m beginning to believe that she is also a compulsive liar.

Here’s the latest news:

“She [Ms Ardern] has given some of the victims soft toys passed on by her daughter Neve, 3. She said Neve had heard about the tornado and wanted to give something to the affected families.”

I’m sorry, I don’t believe that this happened…

Btw, Ms Ardern bringing her 3 year old into the public arena for political gain is vomit inducing…

They will simply not be told that phasing out New Zealanders’ beloved utes and SUVs, and changing the country’s name to Aotearoa without bothering to hold a referendum (which John Key was careful enough to do in relation to the New Zealand flag) is not quite the same as “going hard and going early” on Covid-19. Kiwis rewarded Jacinda for keeping them safe. They may not be quite so inclined to vote for a party that makes them feel “deplorable” or, even worse, cancelled.

  Friggin kids must harden up. We need our feebates!
  
  An EV needs about 10kg of cobalt. From what I read, cobalt or with a cobalt level of 0.6% is considered awesome, so let’s say the stuff the kids are pulling out is 0.5%. ie. 200kg of ore for 1kg or cobalt.
  
  That means the kids must pull out 2 tonnes of ore to make one EV. That will take them couple of weeks and perhaps earn them $10.

  Friggin cops need to learn their place in the “system”.
  
  Parliament: Make the laws. Decide what is an offence and what is not.
  Cops: Enforce the laws as they are decided in parliament. Grab the people who are breaking the laws and put them in front of the beak.
  Judges: Apply the laws and oversee finding people guilty (or not) and choosing a suitable corrective action (if required).
  
  We have a 3-tier system so that one part of the system can’t take over and determine the way people are handled. This only works when the people involved stay in their lanes. This is a fundamental part of democratic oversight (yeah, a fuddy-duddy Western construct).
  
  It is not for cops to decide what the laws should be or how they should be applied. They should stay in their bloody lane.
  
  It is not up to cops to decide whether or not drug taking should be legal or not. Under our laws, taking drugs is illegal and thus, your job is to nab them. If you don’t want to do your job then step aside and let someone else do it.
  
  Now of course Mr Coster is entitled to his own private opinions about drug use, but he is not entitled to decide whether or not to stop doing his duty.
  
  Mr Coster, I humbly submit that if you want to be part of the system then abide by the rules of the system. If you don’t like the system then go find another line of work. As they say, FIFO!

Horrible, and knowingly invoked: Number of children taking antidepressants hits all-time peak during pandemic

More than 27,000 children were prescribed antidepressants last year, the figures show, with numbers peaking during the first lockdown, and two thirds of cases involving girls.

Overall, the figure was 40 per cent higher than five years ago, when 19,739 children were prescribed such drugs.

Experts said growing numbers of children were being medicated, because waiting lists for help from psychologists and psychiatrists were too long.

Earlier this week, The Telegraph revealed waits of up to four years in some parts of the country, amid warnings that 1.5 million children will need mental health treatment as a direct result of the pandemic.

  I think we’ve only seen the thin end of the wedge so far.
  
  Just the social isolation & break down of wearing masks is huge – let alone anything else.
  
  We humans are naturally sociable and our lizard brain depends on seeing faces to determine trust and be empathetic to people. Masks take that all away.
  
  Then of course schooling, sports etc have been trashed and for many people those provide a sense of belonging/purpose/self-worth.
  
  It is no wonder that the USA is descending into anarchy.

  Perhaps it is time to bring in a the same rules for councils as for kids:
  Kids, you only get to go play with your computer games once you’ve done your homework.
  Councils, you only get to play with cycle paths and cool stuff after you’ve delivered basic services.
