A lot of people, including me, have disparged electric cars as really being coal powered. Unfortunately, that is not correct. The thermal generation from coal is effectively maxed out and has been for some time. So the marginal supply, like more cars, is now being provided by the more expensive Methanex gas. The virtue signallers are now driving around on lost export earnings. This is topped up by diesel – which would normally be used by Hiluxes. We aren’t even into the peak demand period yet where unless we have a warm winter, get a lot heavy rain or if another reliable generator breaks down, things will get very hard.
I suppose we are supposed to be glad that it isn’t generated by denialists (the modern day kulak) on a treadmill.

What a steaming pile of crap we’re being fed about the “Dawn Raids” which are still happening almost 50 years later – with good reason and to good effect.

It’s hard to know what it is about them that causes so much “trauma and inhumanity” according to “critics” who as far as I can tell are overstayers or their relatives, now demanding to be allowed to remain in New Zealand when they acknowledge they have no legal right to do so.

It’s as if they’re saying “Yes, you can come and arrest us, but only at hours of the day we find acceptable.” Immigration NZ said that they usually go and arrest the illegal overstayers between 7am and 9pm, but visits outside these hours (from 6am to 7am) are approved on a case-by-case basis.
1$uffed also lies when they state that most of the overstayers being arrested are Pasifika; however Immigration NZ stated that 31% of them were Asians, mostly overstaying their student visas, and that “Pacific nationals (Samoa, Tonga, Fiji Tuvalu and Kiribati) make up around a third of the total estimate.”

We now see what they really want, in compensation for the unforgivable sin of being arrested at a time they don’t like. Polynesian Panthers spokesman said “He felt a clear pathway for overstayers to remain legally in New Zealand was more appropriate and fitting, after the racism Pasifika faced at the hands of a Labour government.”

Here’s the news buddy, we don’t allow people to come here or live here illegally. if you accept that, then you have to accept the consequences. If you don’t accept that, get the hell out.

  Compare and contrast the Media Party treatment of this story to their glorying over the recent ( and ongoing) FBI / police stings against the ethno gangster drug pushers.
  
  First up the recent raids were done in the morning , surprise surprise , when the malcreants are in the pits .
  
  Second . I thought the wokesters were all for legalising all drugs to minimise harm . So why are the fascist racist cops raiding the ethno gangsters at unreasonable times to prevent the drug trade , and why are the Media party so happy for such action to go ahead.

  All of this is absolutely correct but Police have limited resources and it has been asserted they used those resources to target Pacific overstayers and not white overstayers. People do not have a right to get away with breaking the law, but they do have a right not to be discriminated against by law enforcement.

    I’m not sure that’s the case, Nigel. In the early 1970s the (Labour, but to me that’s immaterial; it’s every government’s job to protect pour borders) government recognised it had a problem with large numbers of overstayers from the Pacific Islands. They took action to identify, arrest and deport those overstayers.
    
    If there had been a problem with large numbers of other ethnicities or nationalities overstaying, they may well have done the same, but we’ll never know because those visa-holders appear to have been predominantly law-abiding, and left before their visas expired.

        If you were law breaker who shouldn’t have been in NZ at that time you can have no complaint. The Police enforce the law as it is, not as you like.
        
        Overstayers have few rights and protection under NZ law. Not being citizens they are outsiders and cannot claim the rights and privilege conferred on citizens or those formally granted temporary residency. They lost their temporary rights when they decided to break the law and stay. Besides that, they have caused huge costs in enforcement.

        The police aren’t deliberately targeting you because of your race, though they may mis-identify or mis-target you if it coincides with that of their target.

Just because the overstayer isn’t there today doesn’t mean he wasn’t there yesterday or won’t be there tomorrow. Don’t be so naive.

  Back in the day some, maybe many, of the overstayers will have been working. How many were working under the table? And not declaring income for tax and for other government transfers that rely on accurate household income being reported.

  What’s the bet Cindy will grant them what they want?
  As an aside, will they be charged for using services and facilities only available to NZ citizens and permanent residents? Of course not, there’s no compassion shown in doing so.
  A couple of quick questions:
  1. Have they been paying taxes whilst here and if so, how did they get an IRD number and
  2. If their kids went to school here, did the education authorities do due diligence with regard to these kids entitlement to a free education?

      I’m well aware of that Kev. Only NZ Citizens and Permanent Residents can legally vote in NZ. However, what’s stopping them applying for a voting application, ticking the boxes on it (there is no cross-check against name etc to birth records etc AFIK) and then voting. It depends on what advice they are given by their various churches I’m guessing.

      Yes David, you are 100% correct. Just imagine what all that cash could be used for if it wasn’t used by DHBs for stuff it wasn’t intended for.
      The only people able to access free or subsidised health and disability services in NZ are: an NZ citizen or permanent resident. An Australian citizen or permanent resident who’s lived or intends to live in NZ for at least 2 years. A work visa holder who’s eligible to be here for 2 years or more.
      Do triage personnel check the eligibility of persons in NZ to free medical care? Not AFAIK.
      PS: There are a few countries that we have reciprocal agreements with whereby treatment is provided until such time as injured/sick person can return to their parent country for treatment.
      However, none of this stuff applies to illegal immigrants.

I see the UK and Australia have agreed to a Free Trade Agreement. Well done to both, but where is New Zealand?

Why are we not at the head of the queue? Surely Wgth recognises that the FTA would be very good for our farmers (humour) and thus all of New Zealand. Are our indigenous requirements as set out by Mahuta still being negotiated?

  We’ll be next and like Australia have phased in agricultural exports that will have lots of ‘niggly’ rules with the ever looming “green carbon” taxes hanging over our heads.
  
  We’ll do Ok out of it although it’s likely that it will likely mean A LOT of pounds flooding our property market as I’d be surprised if the Brits would go along with it without the ability for direct capital investment into NZ landed assets.
  
  Of course the feckless ones won’t have a clue regarding the finer details as they can only read and decipher in crayon.

        However, they did not win the election so to say. They were gifted an election by NZ1st and the second was gifted due to an epidemic.
        IMO, whoever was in power during the epidemic was going to win the next election hands-down, regardless. If the Nats had been in power, I’m picking they would have won the next election by an even greater margin.
        It’s something none of us will ever know for sure.

Due to the recent history of Christchurch, the holding a counter terrorism hui here would of course conflate terrorism and the mosque shootings.

Of course we’d end up with a whole lot of activism and pro-Islamic bent. Screw what’s real and what are the real threats – emotional hysteria takes over.

Holding a counter-terrorism hui in Christchurch was a very dumb thing to do, unless they were hoping for exactly what they’re getting.

      Actually I think it’s accurate to call Tarrant a terrorist. I read his deranged manifesto before it was banned, which made clear that the main motivation for his murderous actions was to start a race war. A politically motivated mass killing seems to fit the definition of terrorism to me.

        You’ve answered your own question, albeit accidentally. This also shows that it wasn’t an act of racism. Like it or not, the Western world is fundamentally founded in Christianity, not in Islam, which is mostly antithetical to Christianity, as the historic antagonism between adherents of the two doctrines demonstrates.

    These huis etc should be forward looking at what current and future threats are – not at anomalous past events.
    
    It is statistically unlikely that the next terrorist attack in NZ is going to be either in Christchurch or “rightwing extremists”.
    
    Holding the hui in Christchurch does not bring any more facts or rational discussion to bear. In fact it does the opposite: it is all emotional.
    
    As I said, all it does is conflates terror threats with the mosque shooting and pushes emotional buttons – exactly as has happened to you in the statement you made.
    
    Making these into sob-fests is counterproductive because it gets in the way of proper thinking.
    
    Sure, grieving is important, but this was not the place for grieving.
    
    Unfortunately exactly the same happened in the Royal Commission into the Chch EQ. Instead of being a meeting where people (mainly engineers etc) could talk about what broke and learn from the exercise to reduce breakage next time, it got hijacked for poi waving and dozens of people making emotional submissions about how Bob would never play with his grandkids etc etc.
    
    Sure, there is a time for grieving and emotion, but it should not hijack events that are purported as technical/informational events.

      If one of this Government’s key aims over the last two years was to make this country safer, to ensure such an attack won’t happen again, it’s not clear, to some at least, what it is doing to achieve this.
      
      Prime Minister Ardern said yesterday: “Today we come together to listen, to learn and to share – both our knowledge and our experiences.”
      
      However, most of the listening was done by the survivors of the terror attack, and it’s unclear what was learned. The conference felt like something designed by those in Wellington, and imposed on Christchurch without much local input.
      
      It would be easy to get demoralised. “We aren’t being listened to,” Danzeisen says.

        Anyone with an ounce of common sense would figure out that Christchurch is exactly the wrong place to try to have a conference on future terrorism threats.

Even if the figure is 10 such cases, two (or 10) White people is an infinitesimal proportion of all White people, yet we are being invited to believe that White terrorism is more of a threat than Muslim terrorism, or of Black violent crimes in the States, for instance.
        
        The proposed measures to counteract White extremism far outweigh any actual threat. They involve upending the social and political order.   TVNZ, in their usual balanced way, said “In her speech, Moses labelled the military wings of Hezbollah and Hamas as “prescribed terror organisations in New Zealand”.”

    Of course understanding how terrorism is handled by others makes sense.
    
    If this was a brain surgery convention, then it would make sense hearing from someone who knows how brain surgery is done overseas.
    
    Israel deals with massive amounts of terrorism and still get on with life and have a booming economy.
    
    What does not make sense is to turn this into a venue for activists. People who are victims of terrorism are not automatically experts on how to prevent terrorism. Emotion interferes with clear thought.
    
    To use my brain surgery convention analogy again – when discussing new brain surgery techniques etc we don’t need a bunch of people with brain tumours demanding to have their say and overrunning a technical discussion with emotional sob stories about their condition.

      We can never be obliged to use or know an obsolete lingo attributed to a bunch of boat arrivals c. 1300. It may have worked for them in their pa and to describe kumara planting but is largely useless in the 21st century. It may hold important historical matters for Maori but that’s their concern. They lost a lot through their own divisiveness when they had to call on Queen Victoria to prevent their massacre. We gained occupancy and settler rights but they gained much more: the right of continue existence.
      
      We have lived together largely harmoniously but in recent years the wiser elders have gone and young activists are very foolishly seeking their warrior roots again. There is plenty here for all but not if we torn in half.

Mike Hosking hit the nail on the head this morning regarding electric cars when he reminded listeners of what was to be the great hope of fuel consumption by way of gas tanks in the boot. I think it was in answer to the fuel embargo from the middle east. Anyone remember those abominations? What happened to them? Could electric cars suffer the same fate?

  CNG in NZ failed for a number of reasons.
  
  One of the more significant ones was that the gas could not (ie it was not allowed to) be taken directly from the high pressure transmission pipeline. So gas at 2000-odd psi in the transmission line was reduced to about 30 psi for transmission around town, then recompressed to about 3000 psi for vehicle use.
  
  The energy requirements (and cost) for this were pretty horrendous. When the gas station I used installed CNG, it involved about 1 MW of compressor power. Without this stupid millstone, CNG stations would have mainly been built on the pipeline and CNG would have been heaps cheaper than petrol. It takes the same amount of energy to compress 30-60 as 60-120 as 120-250 as 250-500 as 500-1000 etc. So 2000-3000 psi would have been diddly poo.

The FB advertisement includes a photograph. Interestingly, it is a photograph of a most diverse group of four young, white people! A massive fail there!!

      Well we will lose it at some stage, that is the nature of any sport – staying at the top is not easy.
      
      Given the financial realities of what is required to keep winning, then may I suggest further attention to my comment about extending the competition, having the lead up comps all here (opportunities for NZ boat builders to be involved in the development phase), and then have the final in say Bermuda again, or Ireland who want it in Cork.
      
      Whatever, treat every obstacle as an opportunity.

    I don’t have an opinion on DDT, but the argument seems to be that Rachel Carson, in her book “Silent Spring,” triggered panic about DDT, and that people were killed or hurt by insect borne diseases that DDT would have restricted.
    
    A scientist acquaintance offered to eat DDT when I asked him about its danger.
    
    The anti-DDT reaction led to surplus stocks of it being dumped on farmland in parts of New Zealand.

Who is driving the fight to stop recognising that the trial and jailing of Peter Ellis was an injustice and a legal farce?

The Supreme Court has rejected an attempt to bring new evidence against the dead man.

The Christchurch creche case was one of a rash of similar hysteria outbursts around the Western world. There were similar features in all of them. Creches or child centres, one or more mentally unstable people, and allegations outrageous in their details.

Christchurch creche allegations by little kids reached the stage of including police and business people using tunnels under the city.

Did the clique of parents at the creche who drove the case receive financial compensation for the their children? If they did that would be relevant now the case is active again.

Is it only me or do others find it hard to watch the 4.30pm news on Three at the moment? I’ve tried to get used to what I’m sure is a lovely lady behind the bar code but I’m going to have to give up. Unfortunately I’m hearing impaired so have to read people’s lips and for me constantly watching that bar code going up and down is just so distracting, not to mention making her look so aggressive when I feel underneath she would be rather attractive. A smile makes it look even worse. I haven’t long been watching the news at this time but found it a good time before the new presenter came on. Why on earth do people tattoo their faces in this day and age? I may be totally ignorant but to me it looks ghastly.

  I see it kind of like the seal of Imperial conditioning, tattooed on the forehead, in the Dune series.
  If they have that mark on the chin, you can be fairly certain they have passed out of Te Wananga or a Maori dept. at another university; with tales of genocide against Maori, suppression of their language and culture, and unmitigated disaster from European arrival, acceptance of white privilege and a sense of victimhood and grievance.
  They are unlikely to pass out of such places untouched.
  To me it strongly implies ‘Damaged goods’.

    Oh, how wrong you are Steve Todd. I actually have Maori relatives and I most certainly do not dislike all things Maori. In fact I love it when my Maori relatives burst into song with one of them playing a ukulele. Sends goose bumps all over me. I love listening to Maori singing full stop (they harmonise beautifully) but on the other hand I detest the haka at everything that opens and shuts. So, you badly misjudged me.
    
    As a matter of interest my Maori relatives also abhor the racist racial divisions that are overtaking this country so I’m in good company.

        I’m most definitely not anti Maori. I’m anti the racist racial divisions. We should all be treated the same with nothing special given out for anything but need. My family are very hard working and get by on their own efforts proving the negative stats have nothing to do with race. In fact they find the divisions and insinuation that Maori are ‘special needs’ very insulting. Everyone can get ahead if they get an education, aspire and work hard. This is why I post on race. It’s absolutely nothing to do with being anti Maori. I’m anti the gravy trainers with the continually upturned palm, expecting something for nothing and moaning about colonisation and other things as an excuse not to take responsibility for themselves, like the rest of us do. Colonisation actually saved Maori who were on the road to extinction with their continual warring up and down the country.

        I’ve always been intrigued by folks who subject themselves to tattoos and other painful types of body adornment.
        
        I like some tattoos on folks… My husband loathes all of them…
        doesn’t mean that he loathes our youngest daughter..
        who has an armful of tattoos and at times has sported chunks of metal hanging from earlobes and nostrils.
        In fact, he loves her and hardly notices her arm tattoos nowadays.
        
        He’s coping fairly well with all the tattooed folk here in Gizzy and even managed to warmly greet our neighbour without having a heart attack a few days after she received her Moko kauae.
