  While ultimate responsibility does lie with the electorate, I think we are starting to see the inevitable result of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition constantly being treated by the mainstream media as if they are displaying the utmost temerity whenever they express any view not entirely comporting to that of said media.
  
  Whether it’s Bridges getting shouted down for the merest “ahem” over the suspension of Parliamentary checks and balances during lockdown, or Collins getting the “white fear” treatment for challenging blatant separatist agitation, I think the bias does “get in” to the national consciousness (like liquid gets into this chalk).

Daniel Hannan – Lord Hannan of Kingsclere – is today among Britain’s wisest and most articulate champions of classical liberalism. He’s also today very pessimistic about the future of liberalism. This pessimism is on full display in this recent video. Hannan predicts that the post-Covid-19 world “will be poorer, colder, grayer, more pitched, more authoritarian.”

I ardently wish that I found his stated reasons for pessimism to be unpersuasive, but this wish is not granted. Hannan’s pessimism, to me, seems warranted.

Modernity is impossible without widespread peaceful engagement with strangers. And such engagement is impossible without mutual trust. Yet abruptly starting 16 months ago, we were told to abandon our modern, liberal sensibilities.

Abruptly starting 16 months ago we were warned not to trust strangers and not to engage with them commercially or socially. Abruptly starting 16 months ago, we were instructed to see strangers – indeed, to see even members of our extended families – as being chiefly carriers of death. Abruptly starting 16 months ago, we were initiated into the cult of pathogen avoidance; we were urged to behave as if avoiding a headline-grabbing virus is not only the main responsibility of each individual, but a responsibility that should be pursued at all costs.

Abruptly starting 16 months ago, modern men and women were not only given license to revert to atavistic dread of strangers, but positively encouraged to harbor such dread and to act on it. Such atavistic attitudes and actions came all too naturally.

Abruptly starting 16 months ago, humanity was encouraged to hold in contempt – even to censor – the relative few persons who refused to abandon liberal sensibilities.

Abruptly starting 16 months ago, we prostrated our panicked selves before our “leaders,” begging that they use their god-like knowledge and powers (called “the Science”) to safeguard us from one particular source of illness, believed to be demonic.

Abruptly starting 16 months ago, there quite possibly began the end of liberal civilization.

  To be honest, I believe that this sort of thing has been going on for some time. Covid-19 has exacerbated it, for certain, but the tendancy, especially among younger people, to eschew face to face contact in lieu of digital engagement is just as much to blame.
  
  When computers use blunt algorithms to group us with those who think the same way we do, and confirm our own biases, society will continue to devolve into an “us and them” mentality.
  
  I can’t think of a time when we were as tribal as we are now. I don’t know how we can fix it, but hope lies in the notion of a true Liberal, founded in logic, science and fact.

Then, someone (probably with a pharmaceutical background) punts up a new scam called Covid-19 and BINGO, shock horror out of nowhere comes some miracle vaccine. Then, there is great relief throughout the world and countries pay up big time for this miracle vaccine and all’s-well. Well, not quite, now, there is a need for two shots of the vaccine. But, But, But, it hasn’t ended yet, annual shots will be required and new Covid offshoots can be introduced at whim.

      You’re onto it. With Man-Made Global Warming (M-MGW), anything eg bush fire, flood, earthquake, etc were all blamed on M-MGW and it worked for a while because schools and universities were pushing the BS as science (which clearly it’s not).
      Now, with Covid, deaths are pretty much the same but where possible, spikes etc are blamed on Covid.
      India may be a problem with the hypotheses but last time I was in India, there were plenty of funeral pyres on the banks of the Ganges and bodies in the river. Maybe it’s only now being reported to the world. The jury’s out on that one.

Picking up my breakfast at the Penrose BP I had the displeasure of listening to John Campbell’s attempted hit piece of Judith Collins this morning. What a conceited asshole. Judith handled him with more class than I would have.

The old Judith is back and she is not backing down. good. And for once the caucus seem united behind here. Doubly good. Slowly but surely the details are floating to the surface.

The panic being set off in the feckless 4th estate suggests despite their wailing this theme has electoral and political legs.

Well done Jacinda Ardern. Yesterday, in the space of three consecutive supplementary questions from Judith Collins, she managed to give three conflicting versions on where the South Island Water report came from:

Hon Judith Collins: Why did the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) present as a preferred option to 23 South Island mayors and iwi a document proposing co-ownership of South Island drinking water?

Rt Hon JACINDA ARDERN: They did not.

Hon Judith Collins: Is the Prime Minister now telling the House that this document here, that was presented to 23 mayors and iwi and says, “Owners are the Canterbury councils and Ngāi Tahu, who are responsible for appointing representatives to the JGG.”—is that not what it says?

Rt Hon JACINDA ARDERN: I’m happy to correct the member. I’m advised that that piece of work was commissioned by Ngāi Tahu. It was prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), and it is not something that Ngāi Tahu or, of course, the Government, who did not commission it, have been pursuing.

Hon Judith Collins: So when the Prime Minister is now telling the House that this document is the fault of Ngāi Tahu, is she now saying it was not presented by the Department of Internal Affairs at the hui that were being conducted by it?

Rt Hon JACINDA ARDERN: I’m actually rejecting the content of the question. I’m advised that it was commissioned by Ngāi Tahu. It’s not a question of blame.

Hon Judith Collins: Who presented the document to the 23 South Island mayors and iwi?

Rt Hon JACINDA ARDERN: It was prepared and commissioned by PwC. It has not been pursued, I’m advised, by either Ngāi Tahu or, indeed, by the Government.

So which is right Prime Minister? Was it:

1) Commissioned by Ngai Tahu and prepared by PWC, or

Judith Collins picked up on the PM’s misspeak, as did Speaker Mallard:

Hon Judith Collins: Is the Prime Minister telling the House, as she just said before, that PwC commissioned this document; in which case, who paid for it?

Rt Hon JACINDA ARDERN: That is not what I said. [Interruption]

SPEAKER: Order! I think the member knows that there are—[Interruption] Order! I think the member knows there are ways of pursuing that. Probably the first is to listen to the tape.

No Ms Ardern; that is exactly what you said – It was prepared and commissioned by PwC.

When the House opens this afternoon, the PM must take the opportunity to correct at least one of her answers, because they simply all can’t be right. As it stands, she has misled Parliament.

  Watched that interchange and the Princess was rattled and DID say that it was PWC. Judith Collins now needs to step up on this whole business of “partnership”. For a cracking speech, look at David Seymour’s speech immediately before the dinner break yesterday. He absolutely demolished the Greens regarding Free Trade agreements. It was a brilliant speech, done without notes and delivered logically and convincingly.

  This is so implausible. Two things.
  
  First if they were not pursuing the ownership option recommended by PWC there is no way it would have been presented in a public forum.
  
  Secondly if the government and the iwi had rejected the PWC advice there will be ample email trails where everyone agreed to not pursue the recommended option.
  
  A simple OIA request will reveal all that.
  
  Gee just as well they are the most open and transparent government ever. Otherwise we would have no idea what is going on.

    Actually for the PM to be correct, there would no emails, no recommendations, no report, and no agreement not to pursue the non existent report and non-existent recommendations.
    
    PWC and Ngāi Tahu would just be saying “What Report?”
    
    The report and knowledge its existence, is like a turd smelling like curry, that pops up to the surface in a spa pool full of friends. Everyone denies it was theirs, and everyone states they don’t eat curry. The turd exists, and it is impossible that the turd created itself, and impossible that no-one ate curry.
    
    Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable (or plausibly deniable), must be the truth.

  No, it’s much easier for them to land soft hits on Judith instead. Last night I was particularly appalled to see a story on Stuff(ed) about the fact that so many MPs are property investors – and of course the article had a picture of Judith Collins to illustrate the point. As if she’s the only MP who has a property portfolio.
  
  Judith is just doing her job in raising these supposedly “divisive” matters in the public domain. It’s high time our media followed her example and did the same.

  Yes indeed; Matt King’s Crimes (Coward Punch Causing Death) Amendment Bill was voted down by Labour, the Greens and New Zealand First in June last year. In all probability, they voted against it simply because it was proposed by a National MP.

      I’m interested in this phenomenon that has arisen recently where people, often politicians, use multiple words in a sentence to buttress the supposed argument but which mean exactly the same thing so add nothing to the sentence.
      
      “…know, understand or realise…”
      
      You could pull our from that sentence any two of those three words and you’d be no worse off.
      
      It seems to me a ill-disguised and cheap debating tactic – unless Mega Fightery wishes to tell us just exactly is the difference in that context between ‘know’, ‘understand’ and ‘realise’.

      “Pointless virtue signalling”? As a former cop, Matt King had skin in the game:
      
      The bill was drafted after a number of coward punch incidents King has seen and dealt with during his time as a former police officer and, for the past three years as MP for Northland.
      
      These include a road rage incident in Kaikohe in 2018 resulting in the death of local man Chris Vujcich.
      
      Twenty-two year old Patrick Tarawa was sentenced to 10 months’ home detention and 400 hours’ community work for punching Vujcich in the head, causing him to fall backwards onto a concrete footpath. He died in hospital the next day.
      
      King also administered first aid to 38-year-old Derek Tanner who was enjoying a night out at a Far North vineyard when he was punched from behind with no warning in 2017.
      
      There was also an assault at the Homestead Tavern in Kerikeri, where a 60-year-old man was punched in the head by a man bigger than him about 17 years ago. As the victim fell, his head struck a bar leaner and he never got up.
      
      King was a police officer at the time and was involved in the case.

        Just because he was an ex-cop doesn’t mean the exercise wasn’t pointless. The idea of passing laws to criminalise particular types of conduct, such as strangulation, has its proponents, because it sends a signal that such conduct is unacceptable. The opposite view is that if the law already adequately criminalises such conduct, then if you do it that way, you wind up with a plethora of laws which may become unworkable or unused. Manslaughter covers a death caused by a coward’s punch, it carries a higher maximum penalty and the law around it has been thrashed out over the centuries. Why add to the confusion?

How the CDC is manipulating data to prop-up “vaccine effectiveness”

New policies will artificially deflate “breakthrough infections” in the vaccinated, while the old rules continue to inflate case numbers in the unvaccinated.

Essentially, Covid19 has long been shown – to those willing to pay attention – to be an entirely created pandemic narrative built on two key factors:

1. False-postive tests. The unreliable PCR test can be manipulated into reporting a high number of false-positives by altering the cycle threshold (CT value)

2. Inflated Case-count. The incredibly broad definition of “Covid case”, used all over the world, lists anyone who receives a positive test as a “Covid19 case”, even if they never experienced any symptoms.

Without these two policies, there would never have been an appreciable pandemic at all, and now the CDC has enacted two policy changes which means they no longer apply to vaccinated people.

Firstly, they are lowering their CT value when testing samples from suspected “breakthrough infections”.[infections in people who have been vaccinated].

Secondly, asymptomatic or mild infections will no longer be recorded as “covid cases”.

That’s right. Even if a sample collected at the low CT value of 28 can be sequenced into the virus alleged to cause Covid19, the CDC will no longer be keeping records of breakthrough infections that don’t result in hospitalisation or death.

First of all I’m not great fan of Judith Collins but I will say that Jacinda Ardern and her lies get bigger by the day and the only difference between them is Jacinda Ardern never gets called on hers as all of the media deflect the Criticism and truth on to those asking the questions.
Ask yourself why there was a meeting of South Island Mayors and and iwi in the first place over water and who owns it, because someone else is lying their arse off also.

As I respect Tait and her experience what is it that in her article she maintains that it is all to do with Institutional Racism?

  They already do get the same level of healthcare. From my observation medical professionals treat everyone the same, whether they are white, black, brown or pink.
  
  Again from observation the racism is more likely to come from the Maori, wherein they do not take “Pakeha” advise seriously enough. Maori would be given the same treatment and advice as Pakeha.
  
  Given the stats that Maori are more overweight than Pakeha, and smoke and drink more than Pakeha, it would appear that it is not a case of not receiving the same level of healthcare, but failing to act upon healthcare advice given to them.
  
  Many people live in denial of the damage their lifestyle is doing to their health. It would appear that many Maori, who prefer to live a more Maori lifestyle, reject Pakeha values and remain in self denial. It is not cut and dried in every case, but that is an observable trend.
  
  The so called disadvantaged Maori just need to wake up and realise that caring for one’s health is a 24 hour a day, 365 days of the year process, not just when they are at the doctor and/or hospital. To do so, means embracing modern advice and values.
  
  The so called racism is not Pakeha discriminating against Maori, but Maori rejection of Pakeha western modern health values.

    To be fair, I can believe there is (un)conscious bias in the public health system, but creating systems that judge access to care, education, and well being that defines who has access based on race is not only racist but also setting up the system to fail.
    
    If Maori are not seeking treatment at an early stage where a problem can be addressed before it becomes critical, then address the systemic failure. Why are not seeking treatment? I’m sure not one of them ever said “I’m brown so I won’t bother”. Often this is a generational issue where stemming from if your parents didn’t know how or when to do something, then the children likely won’t know either, outside of luck.
    
    The same problems will exist also for non-maori as well, but as the numbers show, not to the same extent. Fix the issue, don’t create new ones.

      I disagree. The number of competent front line nursing staff and junior doctors that are non Pakeha almost outweigh Pakeha. And it is difficult unless you specifically ask to determine which of several Pacific countries they came from. And from personal observation, these non Pakeha have arrived in the country in to further their career, will not have inbuilt genrational biases.
      
      If there is a conscious or unconscious bias, it will be because of ingrained attitudes of Maori themselves that generates to that bias on the part of the care givers. “Another one that will not look after himself.”

When a doctor writes a script for a patient they generally get it filled unless, it is a maori patient. Now I’m not saying that “all” maori do this because they do not but a disproportionate number do not follow either the advice or fill their prescriptions and it has nothing to do with cost… most of the time.
      
      When you figure it out let us all know because I know of doctors tearing their hair out over this problem and who are sick of being labelled “racist” because of the stupidity of their patients.

    We visited my late father who was in Greenlane Hospital some 20 or more years ago with a heart problem, and while sitting with him, a doctor visited the Maori patient next to him. Even though the curtains were drawn we heard the doctor tell the patient, in no uncertain terms, that if the person did not stop smoking, after obviously having experienced many heart and lung problems over the previous 2 years, the hospital would refuse to provide any further treatment! We were gob smacked at the way he spoke to the patient! Because of continuing frustration in dealing with patients who don’t take advice, maybe the medical profession do need to be more hard nosed in dealing with health issues, with every patient they have to deal with?

  That distance and isolation from health facilities are a secondary factor.
  Thirdly, because of their health statistics, they have an element of fear of having illnesses confirmed. Not restricted to Maori.
  If you don’t get told it by the doctor it might not be true.
  Other than that their problems are largely the same as the rest of the population – CVD was the big killer but diabetes and cancer are taking over.

She seems to have missed the point: it’s called the Accident Compensation Commission, not the Stupidity Compensation Commission.

  A few weeks after getting to my new country of NZ – 28 years ago – there was a news report commenting on two ACC cases on the same day (or maybe a day or three apart).
  
  Case 1: Prisoner used dodgy needles etc to shoot up some drugs. Arm gets infected. Arm chopped off. ACC paid up for loss of earnings etc due to loss of arm.
  
  Case 2: Bloke eating pie encounters a stone and breaks his tooth. Tries to claim ACC. ACC says nope, your tooth was probably dodgy and would have broken anyway. No payout.

  Mind you, it would have meant the IRS would be thumping the table about my bank accounts down here thanks to the fucking FBAR act sections of the Bank Secrecy Act (1970). A piece of law that was pretty much ignored until the 9/11 attacks produced the Patriot Act and especially Section III (International Money Laundering Abatement and Financial Anti-Terrorism Act of 2001).
  
  Luckily the $US thresholds for a lot of this stuff exceed the sad little $NZ amounts that form everyday life here.

      I’ve not checked it out for years because the IRS sent my 1040 to our NZ address for seven years after we left – and then stopped.
      
      Whether that’s because they employ the same seven-year destruction rule as the IRD does for your documentation or whether they don’t have the resources to pursue something that was producing no money or whether there was some cost/benefit threshold applied, I don’t know.
      
      But they did stop sending the forms.
      
      In a similar manner the IRD here always say that they reserve the right to ask for all that documentation going back beyond seven years, which seems pretty stupid when you’ve burnt it all as per instructions. The IRS likely think the same way, although given what I know of their IT systems I’d bet on uselessness and giving up because of uselessness.

Ha ! I guess everyone will be waiting with baited breath for the corrupt way councils assess home valuations, which dictate the amount of increase to your rates ! (not)
In my view, there should be absolutely no way Councils should be permitted to use ‘home valuations’, as input to ‘rate assessments’.
They should not be permitted to increase rates by more than the increase in the ‘Cost of living’ percentage (or whatever it is called)
Any increase should be based on ‘benefit delivered and enjoyed by the home-owner
I certainly do NOT benefit whatsoever, in terms of Council providing additional services, as they have not improved services for me in 20 years or more.
If they were to stick to the ‘kmitting’, and eliminate the ‘unnecessary spend on fancy projects’, which more often than not deliver no benefit to 95 percent of rate payers, I might be less negative about things – But I will not hold my breath for any change in the corrupt formula currently in place.

  Somewhere down the track the it becomes some other council’s problem.

Can anyone please explain the rationale for Israel’s expansion of settlements in to the West Bank?

I don’t really trust the MSM on anything to do with Israel really, but I notice that while many pro-Israel commentators are happy to discuss many other things, and I think they make good points, I find this is something they are rather quiet about.

If someone can point me to a good source to explain this, that would be appreciated.

  I’m looking for sources too out of interest. I’m always interested in the stuff that doesn’t get reported in the MSM. Like the third country over and above Iran that is funding Hamas. A Israeli Colonel inferred they weren’t stopping until that threat was neutralized.
  The settlements to me looks like a bid to starve out Hamas. No alternative proposal other than: “you shouldn’t do it”, has been put forward.

  Israel believes they have more title to the West Bank than previous holders. Their view is that they gained the West Bank in self defence, and the Geneva Convention on war crimes does not apply. To be noted, Jordan annexed the West Bank in 1950 after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. They gave citizenship to all Arabs in the West Bank. Ironically, the so called “Palestinians” who lived there were happy to become part of Jordan and subservient to the Jordanian King. No firing rockets at Jordanian cities.
  I guess the rationale was the Allon Plan in 1967. Which essentially annexed|partitioned the West Bank to Israel (from Jordan, who were part of the defeated Arab bloc in the ’67 war). From memory, the parts partitioned to Israel were going to be the parts least populated by Arabs. But anyway, look up the Allon Plan.

    Rumpole, you are correct. The leases in Sheikh Jarrah expired. The Arabs had lost court cases as far back as 1982. The property|land in question has been owned by Jews since Ottoman Empire days, the land documents show title to Jews dated 1876. So there is no doubt at all as to who owns the land. The court case in the early 80’s decided on the ownership (Arabs had assumed ownership after the Jordanian annexation of the West Bank in 1950). Unfortunately for the Arabs, the Jordanian Custodian of Enemy Property never assigned rights to the Arabs who took over the property after the Jews were expelled from it. The biggest issue, and its not that the Arabs have been evicted, is that the law as it currently stands in Israel, is that Jews can claim land taken from them in conflict, but Arabs cannot. And as an aside, it was OK for the Arabs to expel the Jews when the West Bank was annexed, but when the boot is on the other foot, the Arabs have a sook.

  I watched the Witness Program on Aljazeera called “Skies over Hebron” and while I know that Aljazeera is a Middle East eased media company based in Doha, and has some bias, but they do have enlightening articles from time to time. What struck me about Hebron in the Occupied West Bank, is that the colonising Israelis are desperately trying to push the Palestinians out completely. Israeli settlers taking over homes previously owned by Palestinians among other issues, like freedom of access anywhere for Israeli settlers in but strict controls of all movement of Palestinians. I think the most frightening aspect of the treatment of Palestinians (children as well as adults) was the behaviour of the Israeli soldiers towards them! It reminded me of the stories I have read of the days of the Nazis in Germany and in the ghettos in Poland. Have these (mostly young) Israeli soldiers never read or seen anything about the behaviour of the Nazis to their own Jewish people! The Jewish soldiers appeared to show the same hatred for the Palestinians that the Nazis had for the Jewish people! Is it so important for Israel to destroy Palestine and kill Palestinians in the same manner as the Germans did to Jews during the Holocaust in Europe? For gods sake, will this never end? Can’t we ever live and let live?

He seems to say it was Chris Bishop who has saved us from Covid-19, and somehow Simeon Brown is the last line of defence between gangs and your children. He claims Nicola Willis and Erica Stanford are showing the government how compassion is really done.

Coughlan even applauds the National Party’s energy in asking 20,000 questions of public servants every week as if it’s a new thing, rather than wasting simply what it is, wasting precious resources. Remember in 2017 when Bill English said they were going to be the bestest opposition ever? Flooding ministries with redundant questions is what they did then. How did it help anyone?

Only, after all that, at the end of this puff piece, Thomas Coughlan admits that the only way for the National Party to improve its fortunes is to win Lotto in the form of an Orewa speech or finding Jacinda.

To me, equating Orewa with Ardern is a little bit revolting but par for the course for the National Party and its media handlers.

  So, a journalist writes something positive, and generally factual about the National Party, and along comes Martin to accuse him of being a “National Party embedded journalist”.
  
  Coughlan’s dead right about Bishop, Willis and Stanford though. Bishop gave an outstanding speech at the LNI conference ten days ago about the Covid response, which actually began “First, I think we should acknowledge that the government has generally done a pretty good job – so far.”, before going on to detail the ways in which the government could be doing better, and listing National ideas rejected by Labour, then later quietly adopted as policy. Nicola Willis drew a huge turnout at a public meeting in Wellington last week about people not feeling safe on the streets, proving her criticism was neither racist or classist, as alleged by Green co-leader Marama Davidson.
  
  And Erica Stanford; she has done a remarkable job as an opposition backbencher, finally getting the government to look at the issue of split migrant families. Her speech in the special debate last Thursday on petitions from migrants was one of the best I have heard in this term of Parliament.
  
  But instead, all we are hearing from the MSM is that Judith Collins is toast. That makes Coughlan’s piece, whilst surprising. a refreshing development.

      Hey Martin, are you Mutton? Not that it matters – it’s all the same emotional, ill-lettered, un-substantiated diversion tactics it always been which ever nom de plume it’s written under.
      
      That aside, here’s a challenge for Martin and especially given his relentless calls for more and bigger government, more and more state spending, more and more state intervention; given our current spending growth trajectory, within the next 40 years the New Zealand government will be spending annually at levels approaching or indeed exceeding 100% of our GDP.
      
      Does Martin think this a good thing? What would Martin reckon on our taxation rates and borrowing levels were this to come true? What would he think of the state of our economy if we were spending at those levels? Could he point to any other country in the world where such spending levels brought great economic prosperity and resilience?
      
      Conversely, if Martin thought this would be an unwelcome development – how would he propose to bring some spending discipline in to the picture? How would he propose reining in the seemingly insatiable demands from the left for more government spending?
      
      I would truly love to know.

  Hey Martin, it’s also worth noting that Chris Hipkins did something incredibly nasty with regards to those 20,000 questions and that is that he forced National to ask incredibly narrow questions which significantly ups the amount of resources National has to expend to get the information they need.
  For example, instead of asking what meetings they had this week, he has forced them to ask on a daily basis instead. It’s the same work for the public servants but 7 times the work for National.

For those of you who have not done so, it is worth looking at the 126 page version of He Puapua rather than the 34 page redacted summary. Left out of the redacted version is the introduction, which recites the spiritual beliefs underpinning the argument that Maori as indigenous people are best equipped to deal with the environment in the broader sense. I questioned yesterday whether religion or belief systems should play any part in decision making about the country’s future. The conclusion to the introduction is this (it’s a PDF so I can’t cut and paste)
“The vision of He Puapua is that should Maori have the ability to exercise full authority over our lands, water and natural resources, uphold our responsibilities as Kaitiaki and implement indigenous solutions with resources and support to do so, Aotearoa will be a thriving country for all.”
I suggest that this goes well beyond the suggestion that it is merely an idealistic road map and rather seems to have a clear objective in mind, one which needs open debate, not concealment and obfuscation.

Interesting Media Council judgement:

“Overview
David O’Brien complained against a television review published by The Spinoff on May 4, 2021. It was mainly about the reviewer’s irritation at the number of advertisements run through programmes screened by TVNZ on Demand. The reviewer briefly mentioned Creameries, a “post-apocalyptic thriller…that gets rid of all the world’s men” and adds as an aside “(btw, an excellent idea).” Mr O’Brien said this was gender bashing and a breach of the Media Council’s discrimination and diversity principle.

An innocuous flippant line in a review is no grounds for complaint.
Finding: Insufficient Grounds to Proceed”

Media Council have inadvertently, but very reasonably, provided a defense/justification against quick accusations of hate speech. After all how does one know whether a comment which was interpreted hate speech (e.g. f**ing Ms) was made flippantly, in jest, sarcastically, or satirically?

Even if you were physically there as a witness.

I think Judith Collins is doing very well as leader of the opposition in questioning this incompetent government and trying to hold them to account. And I think Labour have realised she is a danger to them as she is showing them up as not being able to organise or do anything other than make announcements about future announcements.
Therefore Labour have now commenced their “order 66” (for you Star wars fans), with Tova O’Brien constantly trying to ensure there is a leadership change at National (as they would prefer a weaker, Muller type leader).

        Not that I particularly care though – like Labour, National seem to favour ever increasing state breadth and reach, greater involvement in our lives, more and more state spending for ever lower levels of gain and greater and greater numbers of New Zealanders unnecessarily dependent on the state for their livelihoods – and this is not a recipe for a good long-term outlook for us, I believe.
        
        If National signal to me that they’re serious about reversing this trend, not merely slowing it, then I may have some interest.

      I’m not even sure we can call it a “hack” – it was a simple and unsophisticated email attack, with one witless person opening the email and clicking on a link, which allowed them to gain access.
      
      The list of failures that allowed this to happen is quite long:
      
      1. Inadequate mail server protections that failed to filter out the bad email
      2. Poor internal IT security once they’d gained access
      3. Inadequate user training
      4. Employing stupid people

I’ve noted a series of embarrassing climbdowns by $1uffed recently, where they were found by the Media Council to have breached a number of rules – mostly relating to fairness, balance and accuracy – you know, the things they trumpet about whilst begging for money to top up the government’s bribes.

In this case, which follows a pattern, $1uffed published a highly critical article about a tattooing business without giving the operators a fair right of reply. They didn’t even speak to the owners, and based their entire article on (and I am not making this up) Instagram posts from the tattooing business.

The Media Council, which let’s face it is like a bulldog with rubber teeth, found the article “unfair, unbalanced and inaccurate” and ordered it to print an apology. Even then, $1uffed mentioned several times (including in the headline) that it was a split decision. So f*cking what? If the Media Council finds you guilty that’s the equivalent of shooting someone in the head in front of 250 eyewitnesses.

        This is historically true – but mRNA vaccines that tell every cell to modify themselves with a novel spike protein have rewritten history. What if next year’s virus type decides to attack last year’s spike protein in antody-dependent enchantment code? Thanks Loddenthinks, I have made a rare exception to my self-imposed ban on sullying my computer to visit and read the “apology”. Talk about dragging blood out of a stone; they come across as quite desperate in their attempts to justify their actions and minimise the issue.

Amazingly, their own much-trumpeted “Editorial Code of Practice and Ethics” shoots down their actions. Such as this little statement under the laughable heading “Accuracy”:

Journalists should take all reasonable steps to verify information is correct before publication. When alerted to errors, we should correct the record promptly and transparently, according to the Corrections Policy in this document.

We subscribe to the ABC of accurate journalism:

A: Assume nothing
B: Believe no one
C: Check everything

And yet, in their weak-as-water so-called “apology”, they state that the reporter waited for four hours for a response prior to publishing the article – but then went on to publish it anyway.

Unbelievable.

    She wants to get married, soonish. In NZ people get married in summer. Last summer was out because of Covid. That leaves two summers before the next election. 21/22 and 22/23.
    
    Even you have to admit she is being sensitive to all NZ by getting married in 21/22 to put as much distance between that event and an election.
    
    Perhaps you think she should only be allowed on hostile radio shows which won’t ask questions about the wedding???
    
    Perhaps you think she shouldn’t be able to get married at all???

    I only got through to page 9, but much of what they are saying seems to make sense, namely that the proposal put forward leaves out many things which could reasonably be considered as part of the history of the nation. Actually their list of things left out makes me wonder what was left in.
    A couple of absences stand out:
    (1) Despite the prominence given to Māori history, there is a 600-year gap between the arrival
    of Māori and the arrival of Europeans. It is almost as if Māori arrive in New Zealand and become
    instantly the victims of colonialism.
    (2) The current draft says relatively little about the twentieth century.
    Part of me wonders if someone doesn’t want to talk about the pre-Treaty Maori years, in case it challenges the “paradise destroyed” narrative. And doesn’t want to talk about the 20th century in case it exposes the perils of communist dictatorship as a form of government.

        If I read it right it’s not pre-European that’s omitted, but pre-1840. So what, then, gave rise to the treaty? Surely context is necessary.

        Interesting hypothesis milky – given that the continent of Zealandia doesn’t appear to have ever had indigenous homo sapiens ( another topic altogether), why does New Zealand history only seem to have occurred after the pacific peoples migrated here.
        Hint: An approach that follows the research skills of a novelist by the name James A Mitchener could be a start, rather than a couple of historians with a limited discipline.

        I’d greatly appreciate knowing more of pre-European Maori life.
        
        I find the whole thing fascinating – how the early arrivals got on feeding and watering, sheltering, clothing and otherwise maintaining themselves. How they navigated around the place. What they looked for in determining good living sites. How they got on meeting other Maori when, presumably, they had not seen others from other than their own kin groups for long periods of time. Were items traded and if so how. What drove the change from the ‘archaic’ or moahunter period to the ‘classical’ period and how was this managed etc etc.
        
        What about divisions of labour, dispute resolution, ‘justice’ management etc. How were lazy bastards managed?
        
        Interesting stuff if you ask me.

        It’s a regrettable that the term “stone agers” has become a somewhat abusive term.
        
        Reference to a society’s stage in tool use would be helpful in coming valuation or re-valuation of Maori society compared with other societies. Tool use is a key measure of technology progress.
        
        Measure by metal tools: Copper Age (about 3200-2300 BC), Bronze Age (2300-700 BC), Iron Age (700-1BC).
        
        Another measure often used is when a society began using the wheel. This was first used in Mesopotamia more than 5000 years ago.
        
        Beyond these technology measures is the key cultural question of when (or if) a society’s language evolved from being a spoken tongue to being a written language.

        Nope. The earliest use of the wheel for transport was in the early bronze age around the steppe north of the Black Sea by the Yamnaya. One of their descendant cultures, the Sintashta invented the spoked wheel and first used it for war chariots.     Britain’s great Royal Society was inspired by Sir Francis Bacon. Its had a stunning array of members over the centuries: Darwin, Newton, Humphry Davy, Babbage, Herschel, Franklin, Max Planck – to name a very few.
    
    Unlike the hard-science focus of the Royal Society, The NZ version seems more oriented to humanities – the soft sciences such as sociology, and to history.
    
    The three members of the NZ society who appraised the new NZ history curriculum as mentioned by Milky (11.07 post) are:
    
    – Retired professor Atholl Anderson, a former professor of archaeology at the Australian National University. Anderson has Stewart Island Ngai Tahu forbears, and did research for Ngai Tahu’s treaty claim.
    
    – Margaret Tennant, formerly a professor of history at Massey University. Her publications have been mainly in women’s history and the history of social policy.

He made the comment….”That the surge in Antisemitism would only die out with the last Jew”

Ma was saying this seemed to really rattle Marcus and had him floundering around for what to say. In the end he apologised for the callers comment.

She wasn’t sure what to make of that.

  Somebody on Twitter subsequently recognized the thief.

I just rang to make an appointment to get a Covid vaccine. Although we live in a ton with 5000 people we have to travel 30 minutes to a larger centre to get one( though there has been a year to plan it all!!).

I was told they had stopped vaccinating people in the greater area so asked if they had run out of vaccines. No was the answer but the rest of the country has to catch up apparently so they are not starting till the end of the month. Words fail me.

We shall see. Having an audit done by people not in bed with the establishment being audited (as opposed to the standard claytons audits that have been done to date by establishment auditors friendly to Dominion and local politicians) will go a long way towards restoring some faith in the system by the majority of Americans who thought the election was fucked with. Anyone who believes that democracy and voter confidence in the integrity of the system are important should welcome this.
