  The US has had the right to go armed way before Trump was President, the stats actually dipped during whilst he was President, Knife crime will soar in NZ as it has in other parts of the world where guns are removed. I agree , there is not the likelihood as many deaths by knife.
  Great to see you back, you might be able to take some of the downtick burden today.

Government sat for nearly a week on key information about border worker who hadnt been tested five months.
Dispite being asked about when he was last tested, the Government didn’t admit what it knew for six days, and National says Government is lying by omission.
“It is obviously quite difficult when a individual as we’re been advised has lied about being tested Ardern told Parliament drawing gasps from Opposition Benches” , but it turns out the Government wasn’t upfront about the case either, and is now facing ‘ Lying ‘ allegations of it’s own.

      Nick: Since I did not see your original post, I suspect the difference is that yours was presented as fact, while Frank’s was presented as speculation.
      
      If you are speculating, then make a speculative statement.
      
      ie. Anything along the lines of “I’ll bet”, “what’s the odds” clearly marks your statement as being a speculation, but saying “he is” etc is a declaration of a fact – not a speculation.
      
      But I’m speculating as to the Mod’s motivation here.

  This will include “paring” knives which can easily be hidden and any so-called “butchers knives”

    You mock, but plenty of jurisdictions have pretty much exactly that. Not “assault knives” of course, but bans on certain types of knives are common enough.
    
    For example, many US cities ban flick-knives because they are just such a perfect weapon for criminals; light, easily concealed, but able to be readied almost instantly to intimidate somebody.

      I know that the UK police have been similar strict, especially with the out of control knife crime in London.
      There of photos of the cops posing with the knives they’ve seized. And while some are impressive (especially the machetes) the vast majority are normal kitchen knives, and I have seen butter knives, forks, and even a freaking spoon in what was described as a “terrifying haul”.
      
      I do note that they have a specific exception to the ban on carrying knives with respect to the Sikhs who have to carry a kirpan as part of their religious obligations

        Flossie: I’d say our cops are inadequately trained for firearms usage, but then I’m going by what an ex AOS cop told me (gave up AOS when he became a father, but he’s still a cop).
        
        He’s one of a few cops that have joined a pistol club in his civilian capacity and pays his own way to keep his shooting skills up.
        
        A few rounds down at the range once every year or whatever is really not enough.

    There are over 400 supermarkets in NZ. I don’t recall an attack of this nature before. Providing armed security guards, apart from needing a law change, would be very expensive.
    As it happens I heard a woman from Countdown on the radio say that due to increased verbal & physical attacks on staff of late guards have been in place in a number of their stores.

If one Maori tribe invades the territory of another tribe and, using its superior power, attacks, overcomes and enslaves its opponents, eating some in the process, and then seizes the land and imposing its own tribal customs on that territory, does this come under the umbrella term ‘colonisation’?

As this was a common pattern of Maori behaviour prior to the arrival of the Europeans I am curious.

      when Brunner and Heaphy did there great trek from Nelson down the west coast in 1846 there were only about 90 Maori living on the entire west coast.
      
      The South Island, lacking the moa, seals and penguins that all got eradicated during initial Maori settlement, and lacking ability to grow kumara and gourds to store food (or make decent warm clothing to survive harsh winters) was extremely sparsely settled prior to Europeans arriving outside of a few coastal locations with good year-round supplies of seafood.

    However, there are historical man-made artifacts and evidence going back thousands of years, oldest one in Auckland, is over 30,000 years old. I guess the Tahitian Maori had time machines a few hundred years ago, and traveled back in time to plant the evidence. Very clever for a race that did not have technology. Oh I forgot, clocks and watches are a colonial construct, which means Maori no longer has free will over time and time travel.
    
    It is however not the Maori that have been duping NZ and concealing the true past of NZ. It is the hidden global money lords elite that play the long game, and that stand to gain when NZ collapses due to splintered races and poverty caused by the socialist policies adopted by the puppet government.
    
    Just like in South Africa where the farms that get taken off the White South Africans to be “given” to the natives, just happen to be in areas where there are rich mineral deposits. Despite the narrative this land will never be under the control of the natives, It is just a front for valuable land acquisition.
    
    Venezuela also has rich mineral deposits. Same game there.
    
    No doubt in the future, someone will tap into the vast underground gas resources in NZ, long after it is forgotten that our puppet PM banned gas exploration as a result of whispers in her ears from her advisors.

  @Nukuleka – the NZ Labour/Greens government is currently undertaking a systematic re-write of our nation’s history.
  Presumably the Maori people themselves are happy to participate in this “whitening” and sanitising of their way of life back then.

  This is the first pandemic that has happened with widespread testing and genomics available.
  
  Genomics in particular is a very new tool and the reality is that we don’t really know how to interpret the data.
  
  For example the KoolAid wonder says she thinks various things are “very unlikely”, but there has really not been sufficient experience with these tools to really know what is likely and what is not.
  
  Again, it comes back to using models to try to determine what is and what is not likely. Unfortunately, these models are based on what people think is likely, so they really just become a self-confirmation exercise.
  
  Is it really a “tricky virus”? No. Like all viruses it has no brain, no cunning. It does not even have a cell or a means of locomotion. A virus can’t even reproduce except by infecting and “reprogramming” a cell to do its reproduction for it.

      I won’t say it was manufactured, but that does not mean it did not escape from a lab.
      
      It is perfectly plausible, and highly likely, that a natural virus was being fiddled with in a lab and someone chucked something in the wrong drain/rubbish bin or the cleaner sold some dead lab animals to the wet market.
      
      To believe otherwise is to believe that it is purely a coincidence that, of the tens of thousands of wet markets in China, the market that’s spitting distance from a biolab of dodgy repute is the one that kicked up a new virus that started a pandemic.

Here is my take on what will happen as an outcome of He Puapua. The Labour government will implement all the recommendations of the report except for a Maori parliament before the end of the current parliamentary term. Their thinking will be that by 2040 the population will be so brain washed this last step will happen as a matter of course.
The majority of us will moan a lot and may even hold a march or two but to no avail. Things will heat up when Labour loses the next election and a strong conservative leader tries to undo all the change. In that situation it will be radical Maori and their white progressive enablers who will create a revolt trying to defend their privilege. It will be very ugly.

      We have already had treaty reparations. This grievance industry should be brought to a close. It is wrong now to be doling out compensation to people who were not even born when the alleged wrongs were done. Especially when you consider that many of the current Maori could probably trace back lineage to a colonizer as well. They are effectively suing us for damage that one of their ancestors did to another ancestor.
      We do need to have a full debate as to how to go forward. IMO we should set the treaty aside now and move forward under a principle of equal rights for all citizens regardless of their race.

  Unlikely, this report is the result of what “kindness” does, when you allow a bunch of nobodies to go start discussing pie in the sky ideas with tax payers money.
  
  You end up having to defend stupid ideas. There is no way there will be a seperate parliament, there is no way that 1/3 of NZ will be given to Maori in the DOC report (imagine the effect on our currency of giving all this land away, and what about our carbon credits ?).
  
  It will be a re-run of the CGT, massive blowback followed by a backdown.
  
  A few watered down nothings will happen followed by things being reversed after they lose the election.

Beers last night with a mate whose 25 year old daughter teaches Maths to year 9 and 10 (forms 3 and 4) pupils. She got her science degree at Otago.
Being a hoarder he had got out her maths book from her year 9 class.
The daughter was quite surprised that Dad had kept it but she was astonished at the deterioration in maths skills over the past 12 years, for children of that age group. She was average, or slightly above average, at that age, but claims she would be the Dux in 2021.
The daughter reckons we have a huge problem coming down the track.

      In the 10 years following my time in school last century there was more than 1 year of ‘slippage’ in maths. Those who left school a decade later effectively missed out on a whole year of learning due to fuckwits in charge in education in NZ. I am certain it has gotten far worse. Nowadays 7 and 8 year olds in good schools don’t know basic multiplication tables.

    Some decent teaching would be useful. Many women are not easily numerate but set theory and logic don’t need to be taught at primary level.
    Having kids count, partitioning sets, is out of the tree. Basic number facts needs to be taught, by rote if need be. Most people require useful facts which can be drilled up to 20. They don’t need to go beyond 12×12 or 19+1. Being able to give them on demand goes a long way to being able to shop and prepares them for more advanced maths ed if desired. Teaching GST calcs at year 11 is boring, wasteful and shows failure in the basics. Kids have calculators now so more advanced processes like multiplication like 5678x 35092 is easy.
    There is a place for advanced maths for science, stats, engineering etc.

      Those basic facts are essential, even when you have a calculator for 5678×35092, because it’s so easy to mis-key and not notice. If you know basic number facts, then before you press a key, you already know the answer must be a bit more than half way between 5k times 35k and 6k times 35k, 9 digits long, and end with a 6.

    We ultimately have an issue that menial jobs are likely to decrease, but it is the bottom end of society that is breeding faster so the need for menial jobs will increase.
    
    Meanwhile there is a shortage of brighter, high skilled people at the top end and achieving those levels is getting harder and harder.
    
    While it is true that we will be limited by the raw material (ie. intelligence of individuals involved) , crap teaching and wokism are not helping either and is making the situation far worse.

  My concern about the process has always been about the who and how.
  
  For example, apart from a few “confiscations” most of the issues would have arisen around “private” land purchases where the land ended up in private hands yet I was always told that “private” land restitutions were off the table.

    I have no expertise in this area but I did read the entire Ngai Tahu claim and some of the independent reports around the claim and there was very strong proof that certain areas of land were taken by theft and deviousness. Land around Kaiapoi was an example.
    
    Some aspects of the claim were more nebulous and relied on sketchy hearsay.
    
    Being a believer in the sacredness of property right I have always felt dealing with these issues was important and that it should be done generously and without rancour.
    
    Unfortunately many Maori have now taken advantage of the settlement process and the generous arrangements to push for deals away beyond what was originally envisaged and between greedy, overpaid lawyers and consultants on one side and sycophantic, elitist white panderers on the other the whole process has become a farce.

    There are basically two groups of highly mobile people:
    1) People who provide physical services in person: doctors, nurses, fork lift operators, plumbers… They will physically move to where the opportunities are.
    
    2) People who can provide remote services: software developers, consulting engineers,… They do not need to physically move to participate in a different economy.
    
    In both cases these people are no longer really participating in the local workforce and are no longer adding their skills to the NZ talent pool.
    
    I am in the second group. Almost all my customers are overseas. I work less than 15% on projects for NZ companies.
    
    Many of the top NZ software companies are the same. They are owned by offshore companies and are directly plugged into overseas organizations. They are not integrated into the local economy. For every business contact they have in NZ they have 20 or more overseas.
    
    The only real difference is that one group are paying tax here and the other are not, but ultimately both are unplugged from the local economy/talent pool.

  All minimum wages and “top ups” (eg. WFF) are are the government setting the minimum price for a product or service – no matter how crap the product/service is.
  
  Imagine if the minimum price for a loaf of bread was $10 – whether it was lovingly artisan baked from a rich poolish to be wonderfully flavourful or some manky loaf with mold on it.
  
  No, differential pricing allows buyer and seller to determine a fair exchange of value. The same should apply with minimum wage too.

The remarkable thing about the US and Canada covid deaths totals is how they almost follow exactly the same trajectory.
Yes the totals for US is 1792 per million while Canada is only 648 but the graphs are near twins.
On the 20th January the US had reached 71.4% of their present total and Canada 75%.
Is there an answer to pandemic control here.
Why do the graphs show the same pattern even with lower numbers.
Why are there not more peaks and dips when the overall numbers are reduced.

There is an old that “lies begets more lies”, or “history is written by the victors”. Well it comes as no surprise then, that in the modern age nothing has changed then….when we get:

1. Lies from government politicians about what true facts of things are – many of us have lost count how many times Jax, Chippy, St Ash, Mike Bush, have lied to us from the Beehive podium. But still the media say very little – no headlines that this is “an absolute breach of faith etc”

2. We get hiding of stories or information, that is released (eventually) to us (the taxpaying paaymasters) late on Friday afternoons with piles of other irrelevant information.

3. The truth gets leaked, as has been the case of Ihumatau or the Maori partnership policy paper – which when considered against what has been done or announced by the govt tells us they don’t want to discuss their Maori policy decisions with the non-Maori population. And as we have seen thus far much of this “government non-policy” is predicated on historical lies, misinformation and non-discussion of issues.

Yet given the above,how often do we hear code for “you don’t understand the position” or “you’ve got the facts wrong” with phrases such as “we need a conversation about this” or “we’ve made our position very clear all along”.?When of course nobody wants the conversation & they’ve said nothing about their position at all!

Well I suppose we can all wrap ourselves in our little worlds with the happy thought that our education and our history is shaped by our stories. (Acurrent Ministry of Education advert on radio imploring us to discuss the future school curriculum).

So, life is now nothing, but lies, stories, non held conversations etc.

No wonder politicians are held in contempt – they can’t tell fact from fiction.

      India has 1.4 billion people. Probably 200 million are first world level, and will pay just most of the taxes. Probably another 200 million at high second world levels of income. Over 600 million live in the countryside and 400 million don’t have electricity.
      
      Huge countries like India and China can have large elements of modernity amid a vast swathe of poverty.
      
      China had the nuclear bomb in the 1960’s, but it was very much a third country at that time.

    Eye witness reports of deaths have been far higher than official numbers in hospitals according to radio correspondents I have listened to.
    
    It’s a common theme with shonky governments the 3rd world over. Make out the death rate is lower than what it really is if it’s our people or higher if it’s the other lot.

      As a keen player in my youth I loved the game for its rituals of controlled violence. The sheer enjoyment of one’s physical capability to legally knock someone flat is delightful. Rugby would have appealed greatly to a warrior race like young Maori enabling them to let off steam in mock combat.
      We played many games against Maori and Polynesian teams always in great spirit. Afterwards we shared a beer and stories of our on field adventures.

    Gang violence is out of control and it is only a matter of time before innocent people are killed. We need to get tough on gangs, the time has come for the Government to take action against violent gang members and take their firearms off them. The Government needs to introduce firearm prohibition orders (FPO) now.
    
    Firearm prohibition orders allow the Police to search and take firearms off gang members. If a gang member is subject to an FPO they cannot possess a firearm, get a firearms license or be on the same property where firearms are present.
    
    We cannot allow gang members to go unchecked for the violence they are causing with firearms, they are making our streets less safe and causing fear amongst our communities. Gang membership has increased by 48% since Labour came into Government, its time the Government takes bold action.
    
    Firearm Prohibition Orders were recommended to the Labour Government back in 2017 by the Police. Our Police are the ones who facing this increasing violence every day and the Government has failed to back them and provide them with the tools they need to deal with these violent gang members.
    
    Firearm violence is becoming a serious problem in New Zealand, the Police are issuing general arming orders at least once a week. Police are simply responding to the increasing threats they are facing from gang members.
    
    While the Government promised 1800 new police officers over three years, the gangs have delivered over 2000 more gang members and more violence.

        The devil could be in the detail. Will an FPO need to be issued to an individual gang member? If so, on what basis?
        Is possession of a firearm without being a license holder already an offence?
        The “be on the same property where firearms are present” is the bit I understand advocates have concerns about, since it could prevent someone from visiting, say, a house where guns are legally owned. That could interfere with gang meetings, but also with attempts to reconnect rehabilitating people with their wider family or community. Not sure what the answer is to that.

      When someone purchases a firearm privately, say on Trade Me, the buyer is required to present and the seller is required to sight the firearms license.
      
      Let’s say the buyer turns up with a couple of patched mates at 8pm at night, hands over the money and collects the firearm, refusing the license bit. Then delivers a gentle warning that your address is now known and that a “fuss” will get another visit. WTF is the seller going to do …….

Opening up MIQ spaces is a load of shit on two counts. They’ve had the capability for ages as was discussed here not so long ago. I think it’s up to 3000 more spaces could available if the government had a vested interest in throughput.
Immigration has to have the capability to process the visas. Or the oversight and willingness. I know of four cases stalled waiting for visas and high skilled residency applications. I’m thinking the refugees and student applications are taking presidence leaving some families frustrated and split between countries. Will 500 extra spaces put extra pressure on Immigration?
Also on the humanitarian side. What about bringing back Kiwis stuck in India? It’s devilish they’re left to their chances with New Zealand’s protective attitude to Covid.
The US repatriated 85,000 citizens from around the world two months after the initial outbreak. The UK similar. What a mingey attitude Labour has in comparison.

  I am not adverse to citizens of Indian origin being thought of as Kiwis so long as they are genuinely committed to this country (but then I am an immigrant who has been here for nearly 29 years too so I am somewhat biassed).
  
  But I am opposed to people going off on trips during a pandemic and expecting the NZ taxpayer to bail them out.
  
  Everyone knows that going overseas for the foreseeable has a high chance of you getting stuck overseas. Heck, there’s even a bit of risk in going to Jaffaland. If you end up stuck there, well, tough titties – risks have consequences. Why should the NZ taxpayer bail you out?

    “Vaccine hesitant” is perfectly sensible people who have perfectly understandable concerns and may well be distrustful because the pakeha-based medical system is inherently racist and doesn’t communicate with them well.

      “Vaccine hesitant” would describe over 50% of nursing staff in your average hospital, as I discovered. Not that they will publicly admit it. Most know more about the dodgy origins of Covid-19 itself and therefore for good reason distrust the vaccine. Most will only take it when they get told to get the jab or you are fired.

Have any historians recorded how many months or years expired before anyone realised these terms were not what the Crown intended and were any steps like renegotiation ever considered, and if not, why not – or have both parties forebears just declared it the “founding document of New Zealand” and carried on. Is intent now established by other documents since, settlements of disputes, or the equivalent fo “customary use”?

And does He Puapua now intend to build on a mistake – in a similar way that a separate Health administration is planned for Maori because of their low health statistics, when the causes of some of those statistics are embedded in areas other than health – like housing, to mention one.

Also, how many settlements with aggrieved iwi have there been, and how many to go and will the Tribunal cease to exist when those are completed?

Why isn’t the vaccine in the country? The States is awash with it? Pfizer will practically transport it all the way to Oamaru and Katikati. Yet my family in Taranaki is in the dark about when they’ll get jabbed. My InLaws over seventy in Queenstown with preexisting conditions are at the back of the queue. I think the vaccination rate in the Naki is zero.
Thirty million adults in California vaccinated. Bugger all in NZ. It really comes down to political motivation.

  I heard St Ashley on the wireless earlier saying it didn’t matter while we had no community cases. Compared to USA and UK, our strategy was to keep covid out, rather than vaccinate quickly. If we went the UK way there would ‘hundred of thousands’ of deaths. He wasn’t asked about the ‘head of the queue’ statement by the Govt.
  So it looks like we will remain ‘fortress NZ’ for at least another year.

  Pretty close. Last month’s Govt plan had Taranaki DHB forecasting 800 doses this week, up from 600 last week. Total estimated for Taranaki by Jun 30 is not much over 10000 doses – just a few more than Whanganui DHB.

  We are getting a better picture on potential benefits dangers and pitfalls of vaccination all the time. Being late to the party isn’t all bad. Does appear there might be sections of the population that would be better off not taking it until its safety is better verified (kids and possibly women intending to have kids as appears it might be messing with reproductive systems), though for most above age 30 it is likely a no-brainer to get it.

Hasn’t everyone received in their letter boxes “Our COVID-19 vaccination plan” notice by the NZ govt?

Most Kiwis will fall under the Group 4 plan. According to this notice the govt will somehow provide more info between May-July on appointments —- so its up to us to keep our eyes open for more public notices!

Seems the govt is putting the onus on us people to know whats going on via public notices.

This whole vaccination plan is a farce. It will take literally years for all Kiwis to be vaccinated and even then, we are told one jab isn’t enough.

Also where is the info from the govt on people’s rights who refuse to take the jab?

They are using loaded language as though it is compulsory and you don’t have a choice.

Melinda Gates’ career highlight was the Microsoft Bob GUI for which she was the marketing manager.

MS Bob was arguably Microsoft’s worst product failure ever. The UI was supposed to be very user friendly and non-threatening etc but was incredibly tedious to use and was very resource hungry.

I got given a tour of Bob’s workings when I visited Microsoft in late 1994/early 1995. The programmer I spoke with was looking for a transfer elsewhere and was frustrated about how they could possibly turn a crap idea into a usable product.

When I asked why it was called Bob, the guy said something about (inaudible) bobbing (inaudible).

If it had not been Melinda’s pet project it never would have been resourced, but Bill had been dicknapped and wouldn’t apply business sense.

Ardern was plenty sure of the facts when she accused the worker of being a liar. What just occurred in the media was Ardern laying out the pegs of plausible deniability.
Here’s how it went: We knew Covid could have slipped through but we found a chance to blame our lax testing records on a lowly worker. As (left wing)Kiwis love to punish individual scapegoats we made an example of the said worker and hoped Tova wouldn’t spring us for a small date error.
But we fucked it up. Tova was all over us like white on rice. And instead of apologizing we gesture and use our less than stellar ability to string words together with pointy faces and earnest glances.

Can anybody tell me when “Aotearoa” became official for our country, as by an Act of Parliament? I’m not a legal beagle!

    Correction milky. It is a series of hieroglyphics printed on my passport but not an official name for the country just because the official language contains a set of hieroglyphics that match Aotearoa. Please provide a response to the original question -if you can.

Luckily my offspring have finished school.

Having just seen the new proposed history curriculum i fear for the future …. appears to be heavily weighted towards a load of woke nonsense. I would encourage people to reply to the consultation document.
