Well so much for kindness love and honesty in New Zealand Politics and all those getting upset on Simon Bridges straight forward and demanding Questions from in his words Woke Police Commissioner Coster.
So if anyone still thinks Jacinda Ardern really accepts and thinks that being kind nice and honest with people is what she believes New Zealander’s want in Politics you are really mistaken.
I have been saying for sometime now that our Prime Minister makes the bullets and dishes them out to her loyal bunch of foot soldiers or in this case Junior Ministers to fire without her name plasted all over them.
Well the proof in my mind happened yesterday in Parliament when two of these Cabinet ministers Michael Woods and Poto William’s charged with the task mock and throw dirt
to provoke Simon Bridges about being rolled as opposition leader of Natonal in the previous three year Parliamentary term.

    Judging on the Wellington CDB I would suggest not. Nearly every day I see persons flagrantly breaking the no alcohol law, often acting in an intimidating manner with nary a policeman in sight. I assume that as the perpetrators are persons on the fringe of society that the police just can’t be bothered. I once asked some policeman are the window washers at the lights breaking the law. They confirmed they were. I then asked why aren’t they being arrested and issued trespass notices. They said that doesn’t put them off and they will just come back. Brilliant!
    So I think Simons question was a fair one. The police, at least in the Wellington CBD, don’t appear to have upholding the law on their remit.

  The strategy is fairly obvious now. Jacinda holds a platform and talks about kindness and the TV media are controlled enough to keep the focus on her. The 2nd strategy is to push through a radical agenda with the TV media silent on what is going on and most the country are unaware of it. For example, last night the TVNZ news were attacking Hamish Walker and not a mention of the Maori Council ward change that has been pushed at haste the day before and no mention of the brutal debate in parliament and that should have been played to the nation to enable the country to focus on what is going on in NZ.

RT-PCR is unreliable, and alarmingly prone to political manipulation. Simply change the transcription cycle count and that changes the ratio of +ve vs -ve tests.

This means that with the stroke of a pen, health/political bureaucrats can increase or decrease ‘cases’ to suit their unpublished agenda.

So why did WHO wait until the day after Biden’s inauguration to decrease the recommended cycle count, thereby helping ‘cases’ drop away?

    Immediately across the road there is usually a scruffy dog hanging about. It doesn’t matter if we go left or right the dog follows, making a nuisance of itself, sniffing my crotch or, much to the amusement of mrs kk, attempting to hump my leg.

    In fact, there have been zero flu deaths in the seven weeks since January 1st.

        Here is a comment from the WHO in the opposite direction which give ‘advantage’ to the flu:

    There is such a thing as viral interference – look it up. I am very anti-lockdown and think covid has been way over-hyped and used for political ends. However, anti-lockdown folks don’t make things better for themselves by talking about scientific things that they don’t understand very well. We really have seen almost no influenza and have been testing for it. If you want to read someone smart wtih a scientific background, read Matt Ridley the rational optimist.

    Because there is a lie peddled that there is no advantage to the transitioned male-> female athlete.
    They just test for testosterone levels and pretend all the years as a man, muscle attachments and skeleton don’t count at all.
    The fact that no female->male athletes are smashing records in the other direction does hint at the biological advantage and reality for certain types of sport.
    I really feel contempt for transitioned athletes knocking genuine women of their hard earned pedestal. Selfish arseholes really.

    Trump was vilified for no other reason than he committed the ultimate sin of opting out of being “one of them,” and instead decided to serve his country rather than the corrupt system that has sucked the life-blood out of it for half a century or more. If he had of fallen into line, he would have been fine. All of his troubles over the last 4 or 5 years would have never have happened, because they are all based on nothing whatsoever and designed to disrupt any changes that he wanted to make.

So a judge has reserved his decision in a careless driving case where a e-scooter hit a passenger getting off a bus. The driver claimed that the passenger should have looked before stepping off the bus.
McIntyre’s (driver) lawyer Alistair Haskett asked Christensen (injured bus passenger) if she had looked left or right before stepping off the bus. She answered by saying she was getting off a bus, which was a safe place and that she was not crossing a road.
While pedestrians take reasonable care with respect to other pedestrians, they do not expect to have to watch out for bikes, scooters, etc – pedestrians would expect that drivers take care.
Stuff indicated that if convicted the driver faces up to $4500 fine or up to three months in prison but it is extremely unlikely the sentence would come anywhere near this. However Stuff neglected to indicate (surely the journo should have realised this) that the driver faces at least 6 months disqualification. This is why the driver would have hired a lawyer to fight the case tooth and nail.
If the judge does acquit the driver on the careless driving charge, councils should immediately ban e-scooters.

  Agreed. The mass * velocity equation is an order of magnitude more damaging in the case of human+scooter+speed. I expect most people have seen scooter riders being mostly respectful, while seeing the occasional nutter.
  
  The problem with disqualification is that one doesn’t need a drivers’ licence to operate a scooter, so that makes it a bit toothless?

    Wrong. A disqualified driver took his elderly mum’s mobility scooter (which is a vehicle but not a motor vehicle) and drove down the road (like e-scooters a licence is not needed). He was stopped by a police officer who booked him for driving while disqualified and confiscated the scooter for 30 days. The Police agreed to return the scooter if mum made a theft complaint against her son.
    See Land Transport Act:
    S8 covers careless use of vehicle and S2 defines a vehicle which includes bikes, skates, scooters, etc but not pushchairs.
    S38 sets the penalty for careless use of a vehicle (not just a motor vehicle) causing injury or death including disqualification. So the driver of the e-scooter faces disqualification if convicted.

      Coming to think of it, there is an issue here. The news item about the scooter incident was before the case went to court. Perhaps the driving while disqualified charge failed meaning my conclusion was wrong. It occurred to me that there was nothing to stop a disqualified driver riding a bicycle and the various parts of the Act make no distinction between powered and non-powered vehicles which are not ‘motor vehicles’. Hence there would be no distinction between a pedal bike and a e-bike (or e-scooter). So perhaps the Stuff reporter was correct in omitting disqualification as a penalty in this case.

      For the record, I’m in favour of a hefty fine, scaling with the extent of the injury suffered by the pedestrian, or extent of damage to property.

        A person who drives a vehicle without a licence can be disqualified. It means the person cannot apply for a licence while disqualified. For driving offences the penalty that stings the most is disqualification, so drivers facing disqualification often will hire a lawyer to fight the charge tooth and nail. The e-scooter driver in this case probably also drives a car (possibly as part of employment) so would be desperate not to lose his licence.

  The concept of “Careless” is incredibly broad and difficult to get around.
  I have tried in the past.
  Reading the summary of the case in the paper, I expect the driver will be convicted and will loose his licence for the mandatory 6 month period.

  The defence are arguing that the victim should have been taking care on the footpath , which they are claiming is part of the road , and therefor it was incumbent on her to take due care and attention , whne she was the one bowled over .
  
  What loon ever thought it was a good idea to put motor vehicles on pedestrian footpaths .( Ans : woke green loonsters)

    When you are standing in the middle of the road you should have the reasonable expectation of objects moving at vehicle speeds.
    
    When you’re on the footpath then it is that objects are moving at walking speed – human running speed at a push.
    
    Nobody should be riding a bike, electric scooter or horse at high speeds on a pedestrian walkway.

        There is a distinction to be made here. There are some specifically dual use pathways designed for Bikes (and scooters) as well as pedestrians. On those bikes and presumably e-scooters are effectively entitled to move at a reasonable speed (say up to 30 kph) and pedestrians do need to be aware of this and take care. These can be (but aren’t necessarily) rather wider than a normal footpath. Not uncommon in my area.
        
        Other footpaths are designed to primarily cater for pedestrians and on those it would seem at least reasonable to expect a lower speed, say around 15-18 kph at most.
        
        In the case in point, although I don’t know the exact circumstances, I suspect that the scooter was travelling too fast for the environment it was in, and that is a common problem with those scooters. Especially where “enthusiasts” have removed speed limiters, and in a number of cases I am aware of where the rider was “under the influence”. I rather agree with the person who was hit, getting off a bus should not require a strict “look right, look left, look right again” sort of routine. The scooter rider should undoubtedly have been more cautious around a stopped bus and a bus stop.
        
        As an aside, I have a cousin (and not a young fellow either) who has an e-scooter and one evening after a fair few was riding it home along the footpath. As he swung gracefully (as he put it) around a corner at speed he encountered a pedestrian and took sudden evasive action. Result, two weeks with his leg up and six weeks of physio. Pedestrian shaken but not touched, though apparently somewhat unnerved by the language. Swears he will be more cautious in the future.

  As much as I want e-scooters to go away, I hope this case fails: she was switching context from passenger to pedestrian so rules such as slowing down and not causing pedestrians to swerve/avoid don’t apply. If the rules need changing then that’s a separate issue, but I’ve little sympathy for someone who didn’t bother to look where they were going.

  Those in charge of a motor scooter have a duty of care. They have the instrument which causes damage so have the greater obligations.
  It’s a novel situation, the road traffic laws don’t fit properly. A fine of, say, $300 may deliver the appropriate slap on the wrist and warning to others to be careful. I don’t consider a loss of motor vehicle licence appropriate.

I’d opine that the ever increasing calls from within the police to arm , the routine wearing of stab vests, the presence of Tasers , firearms routinely available in the boot of patrol cars ,the co manning of illegal roadblocks , the open displays of gang power up and down the country , the open pandering to racial minorities , the increasing amounts of gun violence , the demonising of licensed firearms owners , etc

are all indicators of a failure in policing by consent and we don’t need to be lectured by Chief Plod about far left violence by race baiters in the USA to recognise that there’s something very rotten in the state of policing in this realm.

  It DID start out with consent.
  
  In the late 80’s to early 90’s the police uniform was changed from the formal to informal.
  
  It was PR’d in the print media with a male and female constable wearing ‘kneepads’ for H&S, ‘peaked caps’ for sunburn H&S, ‘tool belts’ for spinal H&S, ‘rubber boots’ for H&S.
  
  I took one look at that picture and remarked ‘they are dressed up for combat’ — that was compared to the old formal uniform that was more one of an ‘officers uniform’ — to the proposed ‘infantry uniform’.

        From cursory research (like yours, I suspect), the TPLF appeared to have ditched communism in about 1991, when Tedros was about 25. The TPLF was the main component of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front, which effectively ran Ethiopia as a one-party state for 30 years.
        Tedros appears to have been be a technocratic public health expert. I suppose it’s possible be became a fully indoctrinated communists while studying at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the University of London,and the University of Nottingham.

Housing, yesterday’s diversion/distraction and a lesson in how to make people agree and not pay attention to the lies and failures in Covid Papatoetoe.

1. From early inthe morningyou have Orr in the media telling us about the concerns of the heated up housing market. Also telling us what levers he has at his disposal, but not telling us the real causes.
2. Big accordsigned between Robertsooon and Orr (butwait, isn’t already Orr’s job to recommend to govt macro requirements to slow house inflation?)
3. Then to cap off the distractions, Maori housing groups are on the soapbox wanting:
a) govt cash to help design and build more social housing for Maori (I thought that was where some of the Waitangi money was meant to go?); and
b) they want the banks to line up and loan Maori money on their tribal freehold land. Really, who is going to be the body corporate to take responsibility for the loan and be accountable for repayment of the loan when the loan is secured over “tribal land”?

All of this was to distract the fact that circa 1,000 people in South Auckland have been told to self isolate (as if that is going to happen?) All in an effort to avoid telling the truth about Covid numbers and avoid locking down NZ brcause all the “big events” over the next two weeks.

And for those who think I’m making it up that we are being provided with pantomime government….I’ve seen the instructions that were sent out for the Auckland lockdown 11 days ago…let’s say Jacinda changed her mind about lockdowns 2 days in……

  Why is Robertson and Labour ‘outsourcing’ solutions to the housing crisis to the Reserve Bank (when Robertson asked Orr yesterday to take rising house prices into account for policy settings)?
  
  Surely Roberston and Labour’s number one priority is to fix the supply problem, to ensure more houses can be built?
  
  Otherwise surely deflecting to Orr is basically Roberston and Labour continuing to pretty much do nothing?
  
  Another thing, during the term of the Key/English government, when Labour spent 9 long years in Opposition doing basically nothing constructive (like supporting RMA reforms or working on realistic housing policy themselves, not hyperbole) they made loud calls that there was a ‘housing crisis’.
  
  I think it is fair to say in hindsight, back then we had a ‘housing problem’.
  
  Because now we have a real crisis – that of $1M ‘average’ homes, Megan Woods proudly gloating about housing 12 families, $1,000/week rentals being charged to students in Wellington (in the news yesterday) and today we read that Auckland is the world’s 4 least affordable city to buy a house … now this is a Crisis!
  
  But Labour dither and mostly look the other way. How can Jacinda Ardern look in the mirror each morning as she plans her school visits and practices her smiling for the camera appearances later that day when housing is NZ’s number 1 problem across all of society (from the homeless in motels, to the poor living in garages and families occupying one bedroom, to the people paying skyrocketing rentals and mortgages)?

    Orr is in no different position to how he was previously. His key mandate of stability in the financial markets comes above all else, and rampant house price growth is not only unsustainable likely leading to crash with negative growth (which is worse as it will crash the employment market, his other mandate), but will also push the CPI to levels outside of the target growth band.

Remember a year to 18 months ago when Kris Faafoi was considered Labour’s safest pair of hands, and was being lined up for promotion? Guess what, he’s got clay feet, just like the rest of ’em:

The Immigration Minister has known all along about an inconsistency at the border which means critical migrant healthcare workers are split from their families.

But Kris Faafoi is refusing to commit to fixing the problem, saying the Government is not in the business of giving people false hope.

There are hundreds of tales of heartbreak in New Zealand due to the inconsistency – mothers forced apart from their babies.

“We expected that we could bring our family within six months but couldn’t,” Kapiti coast aged care worker Merin Jose told Newshub.

“We are living an incomplete family we are mentally depressed here,” said Honey Abraham, also an aged care worker on Kapiti Coast.

They left their sons in India when they were nine- and 10-month-old babies, expecting to soon be reunited – but it’s now been a year.

“My mum is taking care of my father and my son. She is suffering a lot,” says Jose.

Her father is undergoing treatment for cancer. She held back tears.

Merin and Abraham came to New Zealand before the borders closed. In normal times their families would follow.

“That is one of the issues with having a hard border closure. I know it’s difficult, we have sympathy for them,” said Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi.

He acknowledged that New Zealand needs them.

“Yes, and there are plenty of others that are trying to get into the country that are critical.”

That’s right Kris, there are indeed “plenty of others” who want to get into New Zealand; people like Ru Paul and his fellow drag queens, The Wiggles, and Green MP Ricardo Menendez-March and his partner.

But there are also people who can’t get in, like Trev Ponting, the brain cancer sufferer who had to go through the media, and many like him, and like these women, who have been slaving away in the health system, whilst separated from their children.

You’ve known about this for nearly a year Kris, and nothing’s been done. That is quite simply not good enough. Be kind, and either sort this out now, or hand in your warrant.

    I’m not a huge fan of Trump but he showed the way to get around the mainstream media (ok he had fox but still had most of the media against him). Why National haven’t employed the best in the business in relation to social media is beyond me – it’s clearly an are they are doing crap on and need to improve. Every day they hand out Press releases but they are not taken up. The media are the big problem courtesy of the millions Labour have given them. I think there are personnel issues in both parliament (leakers & lightweights) and back of house. You neglect to mention the huge increase in State control, given the widespread surrendering of civil liberties. Have or have not these and other huge companies’ share prices gone through the roof, while many small-to-medium sized businesses the world over have folded as a direct result of government edicts? And have or have not governments taken away personal liberties that we took for granted a year ago? The answer to both questions is yes they have. Here in NZ, the police are increasingly being used as social workers and guidance counsellors.

  Rabobank is a group of 106 Dutch co-operative banks, that in 2006 merged with Rabobank Nederland, but, according to Wikipedia, retain considerable autonomy.
  
  Is is now one of the world’s 30 biggest financial institutions.
  
  New Zealand lost a lot of potential with its financial co-operatives. The savings banks were going to be merged into a big national bank. Apart from Taranaki’s TSB they have gone, with the Auckland chunk of ASB going to Australia, the last part of the iceberg to melt.
  
  Similarly in farm co-operatives. An example is the horticultural growers’ co-operative, Turners and Growers, that after being “privatised”, has become owned by BayWa AG. This German co-operative based firm’s Californian robotics development arm is progressing with introduction of robots to its NZ orchards.
  
  BayWa AG provided a model that might have been used if New Zealand had had an intelligent financial sector. Shares listed for trading are limited to about 40 per cent. Control of the company is structured to give co-operatives that are shareholders a strong hand in governance. BayWa has become one of Europe’s biggest companies and is active in 40 countries. It has preserved its co-operative culture.
  
  It’s ironic that many in New Zealand’s financial sectors and Government saw our agricultural and financial co-operatives as outdated, provincial, and blocks to growth and progress.
  
  Apart from Fonterra and Zespri, foreign co-ops, or in the case of banks, Australian banks, not emerging New Zealand business giants, have been the replacement.

    – In Dunedin, Scott Technology has its robotic systems working in meat works internationally, and whiteware manufacturers in several countries are using its robotic production lines to make cabinets for their goods. Scott is also in the high-tech field of superconductors.

      All the building societies I knew of have gone. That reflects a society moving from a culture of saving and deferred gratification to spend-now and spend-in-advance consumerism; and the trend of New Zealanders financing their own housing to them borrowing largely from abroad, through banks to fund housing.
      
      Google Southland Building Society and you are taken to SBS the bank, and the Companies Office building societies register doesn’t seem to be working. If there are building societies left, they’re hard to find.

  According to the NZ Herald, some group called Waka Kotahi has said the bridge can’t be strengthened. A waka being a canoe of some type, I presume this is Maritime NZ or maybe the Auckland Harbourmaster?
  
  I wonder what the NZ Transport Agency thinks?
  
  Apparently, the chair of this Waka Kotahi group, Sir Brian Roche, said the agency still needed to determine the form of public transport that would be used on a second harbour crossing, which has been estimated to cost several billion dollars.
  
  As a waka is a canoe of some type, and kotahi means “standing together as one”, I can only presume the second harbour crossing is going to involve some sort of boat? Maybe several of them joined together? A bunch of rafts?

        Bridges was a crown prosecutor around the time of Howard Broad. Times have changed in the police service since then.
        Andrew Costner was also a crown prosecutor for a couple of years too.
        I would also suggest the Police Commissioner currently works closely with all manner of people in the service and thoroughly understands their attitudes, beliefs and the culture of the police.

      An offshore field generally takes 10 years from start to producing and 100’s millions dollars. Even onshore with seismic surveys are hugely expensive however technology goes a bit like Moores law. Bit hard to keep up.
      Southland coal seam gas will require vast amounts of money as well as Government ” protection” in stable government.
      How likely is this too happen now.
      Plenty of coal seam gas in NZ, Just need right expertise,lots of money and a stable government.

Um, no. That’s why we have parents to guide us. Little kids don’t know what the heck they want or who they are yet.
    It’s idiotic to treat children like little adults as though they are intelligent enough to make these sorts of decisions on their own. They aren’t.

    Those are being altered and in many ways not always for the best.

  And never have I found that when another tramper arrives wishing to share accommodation do they state as they come through the door: “I’m gay!”
  And even if they did , so what? Why is being gay so special? I meet plenty of people and 99 times out of 100 I wouldn’t know (or care) if they were gay or not.

      If they ignore imputation credits, then the Stuff story is not just wrong but maliciously incorrect.
      
      In NZ’s tax system, the intent is that tax is just paid once, which is entirely sensible. If you own a business (say) and manage to find a schema to avoid all company taxes. Then when you take a dividend or similar payment, you pay the full tax rate on that money. If however you pay the full company tax rate, then dividends are accompanied by “imputation” credits so that the individual only pays the difference between what has already been paid and what they themselves should pay.
      
      One major advantage is that there is little point in elaborate tax minimisation schemes unless they can reduce your personal tax liability, and that is still possible in some limited ways, but far less so than it used to be.

    10% of $750,000 is a tad more than 20% of $60,000 and for the record, few people on $60k are net tax payers, at least the few that come through our door anyway.
    
    Ultimately it’s not the percentage that matters, it’s the bucks although as a civil servant you may well be ultra happy with a 3.5% pay rise rather than a simple $10k pa 😉

“Maui’s dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori maui) is the rarest marine dolphin in the world. It is found off the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Before the year 2002 it used to be called the North Island Hector’s dolphin but Dr Alan Baker, after studying skeletal and genetic differences described it as a subspecies of Hector’s dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori sp.) and was renamed Maui’s dolphin after the Maori name for the North Island of New Zealand, which is Te Ika a Maui.”

My understanding , they are close to be one of the same unless you DNA sample both. Otherwise you can not differentiate between the 2. If thats the case then hell the hell do you know whether your are watching a Hector or Maui Dolphin.

Incidently the biggest Killer of coastal Dolphins are cats.

Seem only the Greens can tell, Maybe through special lenses not unlike Greta.
