After warnings from Treasury earlier last year the Reserve Bank Governor Adrian Orr and Finance Minister Grant Robertson are back in talks about buying debt.
A Treasury paper released to Stuffunder the Official Information Act shows Grant Robertson asked advise on whether the bank should be allowed to buy up billions of Government debt on the primary market, Treasury thought it was a bad idea warning the move would risk long time damage to the reputation of New Zealands public finance’s, creatingthe ” Perception that New Zealand’s strong institutional frameworks have undermined ” and this could make it difficult for the Government to borrow in the future. Robertson took Treasurery’s advice and the Reserve Bank continued buying debt on the secondary market.

Now it has been mentioned that Adrian Orr the Reserve Bank Governor and Grant Robertson the Minister of Finance are back at the table talking the same thing even after being warned that it could cause high damage to New Zealands financial system.

  Beetroot and Grunter are getting nervous as they know the game is nearly up with regards to their impregnating of the NZ landed property markets.
  
  Without immigration/foreign capital (both unlikely is any substantial form into the medium term) at some stage demand drops until prices come down. The bottom 30% of NZ can’t/won’t afford house price inflation and the retirees re-diversion of funds from passive investment to landed assets is finite. If prices start to come down then votes start to get lost as shock turns to dismay, dismay turns to anger.
  
  Unless they find another way to ‘pump’ the economy the risk of Japanese style stagflation increases rapidly.
  
  Imagine spending 100 billion and coming away with nothing of benefit. Grunter’s legacy – LOL

      Unemployment is up. More shop windows with “To Lease” signs. More companies putting workers on to 4 days paid employment. Many employers in hospitality accommodation have let go cleaning staff and hired hands, so the unemployed must be somewhere. So unless WINZ is feeding the unemployed to the sharks off the coast, something doesn’t add up. Unless of course the parameters around what constitutes unemployed have been changed, as they do.
      
      A more meaningful stat would be number of full time 40 hour a week equivalent jobs there are. Which is a better indicator of meaningful work.

  Yep its still money printing. The Reserve Bank with a click of a mouse created the funds to purchase the bonds off investors & banks who own the bonds issued by the gumbermint.
  
  The banks in this case change one asset class for another. Bonds into printed cash. The banks lend their new cash out.
  
  If interest rates fall i.e prices fall there must be an increase in supply of something. In this case an increase in “cash” via the RBNZ.
  
  What Treasury and RBNZ dont want is the clown show with direct access to the printing. There is still some sort of independence.
  
  NZ possible future is Argentina. Say Phil Twyford printing cash to pay for a train to the moon. Thats what the RBNZ are really worried about.

    Retailers inventories are down resulting in increased demand.
    Examples,
    Some whiteware retailers are adopting a pay now ,collect later policy.
    One common model of car up almost20% since before Xmas.

      Totally agree ‘Im Right’ with your analogy, never the less Cindy said ‘We are at the front of the que’. Either she is lying – which is becoming an increasingly commonplace with her, or its something else but she or chippy have not deigned to inform us. As they have not come back with an explanation why NZ is not at the front of the que then her damning words remain – and so do the expectations of those gullible enough to vote for her.         Even if we were at the front of the queue, the “contracts” (<– LOL, irony) are not worth the paper they're redacted on. Everything has an "out" clause. And now that vaccine nationalism is the new black, they're even less useful. Canada is building a vaccine plant in Montreal QC, they aim to start producing in Fall… I'm getting mighty anxious about Canadians receiving any more shipments in the short-medium term, and most Provinces are running out.

    Our entire pandemic response was predicated on getting a vaccine as soon as possible.
    Many of the countries that are vaccinating are nearing herd immunity already while we (apparently) have almost zero immunity.
    That makes us one of the most at risk countries in the world, entirely reliant on luck to not get absolutely wrecked.
    Looking at it that way, we probably should be near the front of the queue, not at the back.
    That and it’s what our politicians were promising us when they were asking us to make sacrifices.

  Correct. The false conflation of diversity of ideas (a good thing) with diversity of melatonin/sex as being equal is only going to continue, and get worse.
  
  One needs to only look at the racist treatment against white and asian NZ’s at our Medical School to see that is the case. I also know of promotions occurring within NZ Army to be linked to sex, ie, certain commands are now being seen as a woman’s post, as none of the men can get a look in.
  
  Surely, if there is an area where the BEST for the job should be selected, it’s medicine and the military. Unfortunately, ideology trumps all.

      There is a difference between insider trading (what allegedly Pelosi is doing) and making money.
      
      In regards to “raking it in” what goes around, comes around therefore it you are in an industry making money out of the impregnated property market I would start thinking about putting some behind the pillow case.
      
      Otherwise you make your own luck so enjoy it while you can because at some stage into the medium term a government will ask you to begin paying for their fuck ups.

    It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what you mean by “the Election” since it took quite a while to establish who actually won, so let’s look at what’s happened since Biden was inaugurated, since that’s when he was actually able to sign executive orders.
    
    The Dow has fallen 500 points since Biden took charge, and the USD has fallen more than 6 cents against the NZD, and against most other currencies by a similar or greater amount.
    
    On January 21 the Dow closed at 31,188 and yesterday it closed at 30,688. Making sh*t up adds nothing to your argument, in fact it blows it out of the water.

I remember when

No doubt there are areas that require a rethink and possibly action.
Once again the Government has managed find an area were it can look for a fault in others.

  I think this was the result of a Consumer NZ look at the retirement village industry and some of the “license to occupy” contracts. It does seem bizarre that a person occupying a unit which they may have paid $1m for doesn’t in any sense “own” it, but still has to pay for plumbing or electrical faults, has to pay for a complete refurbishment on leaving (often to a subsidiary company of the owner of the village) and of course, doesn’t get any share of the capital value increase. Some of these retirement villages are really creaming it at the expense of the elderly and vulnerable. Fair return on investment is OK, but it doesn’t take too much delving into company returns to see that some people have over-inflated ideas of fair.

  It’s an area which urgently needs attention. My in-laws looked at a property last year, and were quickly dissuaded. Homes built by the villages are depreciated around 30% over two years, and when you go to sell them, the village gets the capital gain.

      The capital gains are taxable to the rest home proprietor, but are not taxed until actual sale. The increases in value are recorded in their current Profit and Loss Account, and there is a huge liability for deferred tax, being tax not payable until a sale actually eventuates. Because the tax is not paid as the value increases the rest home company’s dividends have no imputation credits.
      Kev O’Brien calls it a rort. My investment adviser tells me he cannot get me shares in the Mafia, but he can get me shares in the rest home industry, and they have done very well.

    I’ve looked into the possibility of buying into a retirement village. One I checked out recently is (as many are) still in the development process with maybe one third of the projected homes built.
    I was quite interested to learn that the weekly fee is to cover all kinds of yet-to-be-built facilities, such as a pool, movie theatre, games room, bowling green.
    I do wonder what those currently living in the village are getting NOW for that weekly fee? Lawns mowed and some garden maintenance. So either they are being ripped off now, or the fees are going to increase exponentially once all the new facilities eventuate. When that is apparently depends upon sales of homes so that funds are available!

    There are two areas which favour Bupa, Ryman and others here:
    1. We have a inflating property market – and they get the capital gain
    2. We have an aging population therefore consistent increase in demand.
    
    However …..without the capital gain the government and therefore the taxpayer would have some major problems. Currently what is being paid to the care givers by the government would not see a realistic return on investment. Therefore you would see closures and/or the government having to provide more care … unionized expensive nightmare scenario for NZ.
    Now even NFProfit operations are seriously investigating apartments just to stay on an even financial keel.

    Meanwhile in NZ, the most scientific test is our quarantine where everyone is tested and the population data set therefore excludes people in hospital or hospice and only measures those well enough to travel on a long haul flight. We’ve had 590 positive covid cases through NZ quarantine. 520 recovered. 70 currently with Covid. ZERO Dead and ZERO of the 70 cases are in hospital.

The “OK” symbol has been used for centuries. Tarrant didn’t use the OK hand sign, which is holding your hand up at around head/eye level, fingers pointing up with the palm generally facing towards the person you’re signalling.

Tarrant’s hand signal was hand down, palm facing towards himself. A look at the source of this meme shows it is a Reddit scam, that none of the other uses of it are hand held up, fingers pointing to the air, palm facing out.

  The purpose of having a vaccination is to stimulate the body’s immune system in order to create a antibodies/resistance to the infection so that one doesn’t get clinical symptoms and become ill.
  There is no proof (that I know of) that it stops you from carrying the infection, or coughing it out onto someone within range. If the recipient has been vaccinated they (hopefully) will have an active immunity to the virus.
  Some of us seem to have a ‘natural’ immunity in that we never get the ‘flu, seldom get a sniffle, or cough. That is not to say that we don’t carry the infection, just that we don’t get sick.

  No, professor, no-one can be expected to know every possible interpretation someone else could put on their words or actions. They are not liable for other people’s misinterpretations. Pilots at a Christchurch flight school are pilloried on Stuff for making a well-known hand signal for “Okay” that has been adopted by racists overseas. Apparently it was used in court by the mosque massacre terrorist, Brenton Harrison Tarrant.

The newspaper doesn’t show us what the hand signal is, but the first link below does.

Hand signal censorship began when the Nazis adopted the Roman arm salute, but how far can this go? What next? The second link below gives a swathe of offensive hand signals.

The Stuff article refers to Massey’s best known multiculturism warrior as “distinguished professor Paul Spoonley”. Under a stern photograph Spoonley warnesthat the student pilots should not have been “pulling “hand signs they did not understand the meaning of, adding: “They might feel sorry but the liability is theirs.”

He also , gives Christchurch a smack:

  Yeah, the symbol for OK is not offensive. It it has been used by a bad person, that does not make it offensive when 99.9% of other people use it for it’s real purpose.
  
  I was speaking to someone the other day about how a particular school is organized, they have all the children regardless of age educated in the same room. It failed badly, as it obviously would. I made the comment that that was a ‘retarded plan’. There were some wide eyes and I got told that I can’t use the word ‘retarded’ any more, it’s a hate word. Obviously, I ignored that.
  
  Retarded means ‘very foolish or stupid.’ and that is what the people organise that school are, and that is what people that think the ok hand gesture is offensive are. They are retarded.
  
  I will use it frequently from now on, and teach my kids.

He stated their probably never will be a vaccine that will eradicate covid completely.

The vaccines developed right now will only give temporal relief for people and even then it might not work for everybody.

OK so Judith Collins said on Monday that National “would take some time to go through the huge report and finalise an exact response” (regarding the Climate Change Commission report). Good, but can’t wait!

So here we have a Labour (Greens) government committed to turning this country and its energy sector on its head (and chopping off its limbs in the process so that it bleeds to death). I even heard Stuart Nash on ZB just now saying that “we must take action”!

I’d like to see National and ACT strongly “refute” this nonsense. Why should NZ lead the way destroying its economy, energy reserves, increase costs to the consumer and taxpayer, and put tens of thousands of jobs at risk when it will make “zero” difference to global emissions? How about NZ support instead, encouraging the major world polluters to reduce their emissions (even by converting to more efficient forms of energy)? I mean isn’t that what the original “nuclear moment” in the 1980’s was about – making the world powers at the time change their approach?

(As an aside, as to the Climate Change Commission themselves – close the hippies down (and save the taxpayer $$)! They clearly are pushing the “Green Party manifesto” by wanting to enforce a Pol-Pot like self-destruction of one’s nation! Out they go, they are no longer needed (in their present form), where was the robust debate and nuanced views? Totally missing and LOL at their rubbish claim it will cost cost NZ a “1% GDP reduction – they’re on another planet totally deluded)!

Anyway the main focus for National and ACT is rather simple, counter the nonsense with hard facts such as what other countries are doing eg to utilise gas more (to replace coal in the long term), in fact National/ACT should be promoting the expansion of gas across the entire country (eg to replace old oil and coal heating systems for industry, hospitals and schools etc).

Also wheel out the facts that Labour/Greens want to take away Kiwi’s gas BBQ’s, Labour/Greens want to take away gas cooking (get the food and restaurant people and chefs on board), Labour/Greens want to take away efficient and clean gas energy to heat homes, schools and business and they want to take away Kiwi’s cars for “unaffordable” EV’s (to the masses … oh and what about the battery dilemma? Made from mining and impossible to dispose – a future ticking time bomb …. all brought to Kiwi’s by the Labour and Green Muppets)!

And back to the facts – 100% renewal energy is laudable, granted, but in practice is impossible to achieve (unless 100’s of billions is spent – where’s that coming from)?

Other facts that we need alternative energy sources such as gas (and clean NZ coal, not imported at hundreds of millions of dollars, to fire up the Huntly reserve power station in times of clean energy shortfalls).

Other facts such as expect massive power outages under this Labour/Greens birdbrained scheme if the North Island is reliant on the bulk of its energy from the South Island (what if a major earthquake cuts the South and North Islands off? What if the Cook Straight cable is affected? What if there is a dry year and the SI hydro lakes aren’t full – which happens from time to time)?

And what about other inconvenient truths such as the price of petrol is largely 50% in taxes. How is the Govt going to recupe that? Will it have to increase electricity prices to compensate?

I also suggest in National/ACT talk to the power companies, that alot of the power networks to the home (the local lower voltage KV lines), don’t have the (transformer) capacity to cope with an increase in electricity demand from households (nationwide EV charging, energy, etc).

So what about some other practical solutions? Leave oil and gas alone (let the Market determine their future and transitions), but what about more appealing solutions, such making solar power for homes more affordable, to allow househilds to cut energy costs? Why aren’t the Labour/Green muppets advocating that instead of destroying the economy? Perhaps National/ACT can lead the way (because Labour/Greens are incapable – they ahve blown it)!

    Apart from hydro where does all the material come from to produce renewable energy and is the production of renewables carbon friendly?
    What’s the lifespan of renewable power, ie lithium batteries, solar panels, wind turbines and what’s to $ cost/co2 produced disposing of them?
    What raw material do you have to use to produce steel from iron ore and indeed most other metals?
    Where do most plastics come from remembering we’ll be needing most arable land for food production to feed the world’s population?

Children are arriving at secondary school ill-prepared for the lessons they receive.

As a year 9 (Form 3 ) science teacher, I could quite easily bring pupils up to speed with the science they needed, but I could never compensate for the fact that too many of them arrived at secondary school with a low reading age…. so whilst they could follow
verbal explanations and instructions, they could not
easily comprehend written material in textbooks or exam papers.

  I remember when I was in form 5, our maths teacher got sick or something and we needed a substitute. So they called on the (somewhat) elderly woman who used to be a maths teacher but was now deputy principal. She hoed through this algebra stuff every day and we probably learned more in that few weeks than we had in the whole year. And it was really fun as well.

Does anyone feel like me that it is racist to have Maori Wards? I would have thought that anything based on race was racist. Now here Nanaia Mahuta and her cohorts are saying that we who oppose Maori Wards are the racists!!

I was incensed with Seven Sharp last night when they interviewed former New Plymouth Mayor Judd, gave him full rein but then didn’t interview anyone who is against them, thus giving some form of balance. Our media are seriously letting this country down. We need to stress that we should all be treated the same with nothing given out based on race. Anything else is surely racist.

Looking at modern rugby, I wonder how long it will be until they clamp down even further on contact. You’ve got bunch of seriously big men (and women) pounding each other all game while taking frequent head knocks.
And before you say it won’t happen because rugby is a physical game, and always has been, just remember back to when rucks were a key part of the game. And how hard rucking, with sprigs, was the true measure of a rugby forward.

The GameStop play is unwinding. The shares closed today (Wall St Tuesday) 40 per cent down to $US90. It’s fallen 70 per cent since Friday.

Another share being pushed up by small investors, AMC Entertainment, fell 41 per cent to $US7.82 in Tuesday trading, after rising 400 per cent last week.

Another play, silver futures, fell 8 per cent.

Doctor crisis , so why is Otago Medical school failing to accept kids who are scoring 90% averages?

Racial profiling doesn’t help, selecting low scoring students is going to lower standards .

But, if they ‘have’ to select students on the basis of skin colour, why don’t they put them outside the academic quota so as not to affect those with amazing grades?

Especially since we have such a critical shortage.

  Read an article about a kid who’d wanted to be a doctor for most of his life and his grades for medical school were in the high 90’s but couldn’t get into medical school because of racial profiling. Otago I think it was. We’re in sad times when race and gender are more important than talent and we’re being conditioned to accept it.

I’m sorely tempted to contact the so-called “Senior business journalist” and ask him, politely, if he actually bothered to think before publishing this farrago of accusations. It’s just stirring up an under-current of ill-defined feelings around so-called “white supremacy” and serves no useful purpose.

And as for Paul Spoonley – I despair. He says “the students should not have be pulling hand signs they did not understand the meaning of.” Mr Spoonley, you’re talking utter bilge-water. The okay hand-sign has been used for centuries to mean … are you okay? I’m okay.

He goes on to say “Most New Zealanders would not be aware that the hand symbol meant white power”. No shit Sherlock, so maybe it’s not as big a problem as you’re trying to make out. Some morons are trying to make this gesture into something it’s not, we as a society have by and large laughed at them and said screw you, thereby effectively reclaiming an innocent symbol and taking the power back from them, and now you come along and put the power back in their hands??

Well screw you Spoonley. You don’t get to decide this on our behalf. The okay hand sign is still perfectly okay as far as I’m concerned, and it’s not up to you to snootily proclaim otherwise. Stop trying to cause trouble where none is intended.

  Thumbs up is severely discouraged because that’s the symbol for “go to the surface”.
  
  Hand symbols mean different things in different context. In West Africa the “thumbs up” is extremely rude and using the conventional hitch-hiking symbol is liable to get you run over.

So now we find out that it IS still a scientific possibility that the virus escaped from the local lab? And there is no *fact* as to it’s origin yet.

  The director of the lab was considered to be extremely reliable, and she said it had not come from there.

    The first time he really had nothing to answer to, so, naturally, he was cleared.
    
    The second time is based on an interpretation of unclear and ambiguous messages he sent. There is huge reasonable doubt as to his intentions, so justice dictates that he will be cleared again.

    You are right that the American system is corrupt as fuck.
    Law enforcement have explicitly stated that the “attack” was planned in advance – how could Trump incite it with his speech if it had already been planned before his speech?
    His speech did not at any point incite what happened. Instead, the argument is that he riled everyone up to the point they decided to do the “attack”.
    Or that people associated with him incited it?
    The impeachment didn’t undergo any kind of due process, it pretty much went straight to a vote. That is enough to call it corrupt in itself.
    
    The fact is that the Democrats have weaponised the impeachment process to attack someone they hate. There is not even an ounce of evidence to prove their accusation. The burden of proof should be lower than in a court but there should still be a burden of proof.

Can’t find it now, but yesterday one of the activist profs at one of the universities ran a study to show that EVs were a cheaper option than a second hand car.

The numbers they came out with were not really that much different and so the EV was only slightly better.

But there were huge flaws.
1) The petrol car was paying RUC though petrol tax. The EV was not paying RUC. Once RUC kicks in for EVs the numbers will flip the other way.

2) They way overestimated battery life. They took the maximum mileage lifetime of the battery (320,000km) for the best case and divided that by 12,000 km per year and came up with 27 years. Most batteries will never last that long with 100,000km to 200,000km being more typical.

And, sorry, battery lifetimes do not work that way. Mileage is not the only factor.
Yes, you can wear a battery out in 200,000 km but it will also wear out with time. Even if you only did 5,000 km/year you’d be very lucky if the battery lasted 20 years.

So a more honest number for the battery life would be around 15 years.

So double the cost of the battery per km and add 7.6 c per km for RUC and the numbers are not looking so flash – the EV probably comes out costing a large % more than a normal car.

These “experts” should really be ridiculed. They are exploiting their titles and positions to tell lies.

  Sustainability is a huge metric in any company, Why is it not shown on climate paper and measured?

Interesting – so the PM will get jabbed eventually but is stepping aside so those controlling the border get preference. I would have thought as #1 in respect to final border control decisions, that she should/would be #1 in line for cover for all the 5 mills benefit. Oh dear – I forgot – MetSafe have only given PROVISIONAL approval – so she needs a pile of sheeple/guinea pigs to actually test it for her in case the MetSafe decision has to be reversed once more data becomes available.
