  The biggest problem here is not scientific or medical. It is social.
  
  If people need to do isolation then it really does not matter where they do it so long as they are isolated from others. Indeed from a scientific/medical point of view doing it in a facility cooped up with others breathing the same air is probably the worst possible option.
  
  Why not allow people to go sailing for 2 weeks? Stay in a bach? Go fishing/hunting away from others?
  
  The real problem here is entitlement. This breeds a feeling that this is unfair and that leads to problems with compliance from others which undermines the quarantines and results in cross-cohort shagging etc.

  If this article is to be taken at face value what happened here is a rare occurrence and why the we’re allowed to isolate at home was to do with
  “Some of her children are high-needs, it is understood.”
  Kids may be autistic or whatever, or confined to a wheelchair, who knows, I don’t.
  Personally I think if they’re responsible people what does it matter if they stay at home. They’ll know if they fuck it up they fuck it up for everyone.

    I tend to agree with you MCos. It would be much easier to manage high-need family members in their own home where presumably there would be the requisite facilities.
    And didn’t we all do home isolation for a month last year?
    I don’t see why there should be any need for security – I think a sign on the gate would be pretty effective.

    Tall Man, is it coincidental that immediately after National announces it will give in to the apartheid electoral system we have by standing candidates in Maori seats the government feels emboldened to get rid of the right of citizens to participate in referenda on the establishment of Maori wards at local government level? National now have not a leg to stand on should they now attempt to criticise such blatant racism. The government and media will call them out on the blatant hypocrisy that it would be.     It’s not about winning the Maori seats, it’s about having airtime to talk to Maori about Maori issues. Not all Maori are on the Maori rolls, but that doesn’t mean they ignore the discussions being made by their local Maori MPs.

  What an absurd statement. The aberration is National not standing in the Maori seats from 2005 to 2020, which is 15 years of the the 84 years.
  A major party should stand in all the parliamentary seats that exist in New Zealand. The failure to do so over the last 15 years has progressively reduced the number of party votes for National in the Maori seats.
  There is zero chance that these seats will be abolished in the next 50 years. To all intents and purposes they are a permanent feature of our parliamentary democracy. National railing against them was pointless.

      It would be different if the Maori party had National’s backing and won some electorate seats. They wouldn’t be coming out of National’s party vote pile.
      
      The question is whether not being there has a negative effect on Nat’s party vote in these electorates. I really don’t know, but OTOH it is hard to imagine that their absence helps their party vote.

    The only absurdity is the confused centrism of National acting like Labour-lite when they have nobody even remotely popular or relatable as Jacinda Ardern. National’s greatest ever boost in polling came after the Orewa Speech. Now National are in a worse state of affairs than they were in 2002 and they don’t even have “one law for all” to revert to. National will be lucky to get 20% at the next election.

With the enforcement of political apartheid in our local body politics, it’s time for passive resistance.

I remember when

About 40% of staff in UK’s largest care provider have not yet been vaccinated for covid-19.
In November there was an article saying that 48% of deaths had occurred in care homes.
So the people that have seen the largest number of serious covid cases have not rushed to get the vaccine.
Why?

    As you know (if you remember), I’m trucking along some years behind you. I have had the ’flu jab every year for about the last 25 years, without any reaction whatsoever. In fact, having to sit there for 20 minutes, after the jab, when I wanted to get back to work, really used to annoy me.
    
    The moment I become eligible to get the COVID-19 jab, some time after June or July, I’ll be in there, “boots an’ all”.

Surely, given the gravity of the consequences that will result if these recommendations are to be adopted (the cost to our economy alone is said to be in excess of $10 billion) there needs to be a much longer conversation if we are to go down this rocky path that the Commission wants us to take.

  The same article states, “Its plan suggests no new natural gas connections to the network or bottled LPG after 2025.”
  
  I live on a lifestyle block in Auckland, and my hob and hot water are both gas. There is no mains gas out here, so I use bottled gas as do my neighbours.
  
  So if I understand this correctly, I will need to replace my one-year-old continuous flow water heater and my three-year-old gas hob in the next four years? As will my neighbours, and hundreds more people in the same situation.

      The cynic in me agrees Batman – What would be interesting to see is the number of gas powered oven/hobbs & hot water systems in NZ, and the likely increase in electricity use to cover their conversion. This coupled with recharging electric cars, we are going to need a bloody lot more than the pipe dream of using Manapouri power to cover all of this.

    I’d be picking the price of gas will make it economically unviable by 2025.
    Goodbye to Califonts, Gas Heaters etc.
    People be lucky or willing to spend on BBQ Gas as the price to refil will be out of reach and instead of “swap” a bottle will come under “steal ” a bottle due to cost to replace.
    Thats my prediction, as economics of scale will be against the consumer, unlike Oz.

I read parts of the climate commission report yesterday. It was worrying. Quite apart from the fact that the name of the country, New Zealand, was totally absent in the narrative.

The report acknowledges that people on low incomes will not be able to afford EVs. It specifically mentions South Auckland. And it goes on to say that these people will need to switch to public transport.

So we are going to deprive low income people of cars for what benefit? If you are a family with kids in the suburbs your quality of life will be significantly diminished without a vehicle.

Why is there not outrage over this? I am hoping it is a slow burn…

I am totally confident that Jacinda will ban petrol cars. National will sit on the fence. Only ACT will point out the stupidity.

      The poster, Unity, is right. If they were sincere, State TV (and Radio NZ) would run dual programmes in English and Maori, reflecting the two languages.

  Personally I can afford an ev but many can’t. Public transport is not an option for my ire, a nurse in ED that sometimes starts at 7 or finishes at midnight or 7 or 3 in the afternoon. We live 3 km from the village and a 32 km drive to work. Fine , as I said, I can afford an ev but can the cleaners, care assistants and lower paid nurses living in the village ? Ps as an ED nurse, working from home is not an option!

  The plan is to ban petrol car imports from 2030 or so, not ban petrol cars outright. Though that could occur sometime around 2050.
  In doing so New Zealand will simply be part of a global trend, with both left and right governments already going down this path.
  I imagine poorer families won’t be getting into electric cars for another 8 to 12 years.
  Round where I live there are heaps of new Tesla 3’s. Presumably they will be on the second hand market in about 3 to 5 years. I guess a second hand price of $20 to $40k. Maybe poorer families will be the third owners in about 5 to 8 years.

        Prices in Japan for “refabricated” (that is reconditioned) batteries from Nissan for Leaf vehicles, including shipping, local margin, and GST must be $6000 to $7000 or more. That is before installation, which might take a mechanic most of a day.
        
        For new batteries the price is much steeper.
        
        The price of a brand-new Leaf in New Zealand is $62,000.
        
        Take an ordinary Kiwi family, say a tradie with a wife still not able to work because the three kids are too small. Forcing them into electric vehicles is like forcing them into driving BMWs and only BMWs.
        
        New Zealand’s professional-Greenie elite on electric cars is acting like the fabled response of Marie Antoinette when told the power had no bread. Instead of telling them to eat cake today she would be telling them: let them drive EVs (or bike or walk).
        
        Here’s a case of a Nissan dealer telling the New Zealand owner of a $13,000 used-import Leaf that a brand new battery would cost her $121,000.

    I’m not overly familiar with the Tesla models, but I haven’t seen any Tesla people-carriers in Auckland – and remembering that often the families in South Auckland have large families, I imagine these will be the car of choice. A very quick Google tells me that the Model X is a 7-seater, and list price on the NZ website is $182,598.
    
    What sort of price do you think one of these will be going for in, say, eight years? I highly doubt it will be within reach of your average South Auckland family.

      Battery life is not the problem it was a few years ago. The Model 3 is quite a decent sized car at starts at $80,000 new. So I am picking $20,000 at 5 to 6 years old. In any event there will be a much bigger range of choice in EV’s pretty soon and from big volume manufacturers like Kia and Toyota..

      I obviously appreciate that Bayswater and Devonport are not exactly a mirror of wider New Zealand. Though Bayswater, where I live, ranges from about 200 state houses to a few $10 million properties at the end of the Peninsula. The Tesla’s are more of a Devonport thing. Tesla’s could easily be the biggest selling car in Devonport. In Bayswater there are a lot of Ford Rangers.
      
      The point I was making is that the shift to EV’s is already occurring, especially in affluent, environmentally aware places like Devonport. They are just the first wave, the early adopters.
      
      By 2030, EV’s will be everywhere and in all market segments. The Tesla’s 3’s being sold to Devonport residents (price range $80,000 to $110,00 depending on model) will be 10 years old in 2030. You will see a lot of them in West Auckland, and perhaps South Auckland by then.

  John Key had the backing of the Maori Party & thus Maori seats by proxy. That gave him 5, 3 & 2 seats over consecutive administrations. ( Notice a trend)
  The Maori Party dipped out at the next election leaving Bill high & dry with no Maori seats.

  Until 1999 the Nats had always stood candidates in the Maori seats since its inception. They even won 2/4 first time up, but that didn’t last long and even Apirana Ngata lost his seat.

One line stood out to me:

Now I know a few at the pointy end of medical treatment and one thing is clear from our discussions. Maori are far more likely to cease medication before the specified date. They are far more likely to fail to attend appointments for initial treatment, ongoing treatment and followup appointments to review the result of treatments.

They are far more likely to fail to collect prescriptions, that may be a cost issue, and are far more likely to fail to follow the exact instructions when timeliness is a requirement for the success of the medication.

However, it appears that it’s the fault of the system. No one has yet told me how……

  Maori are far worse off socio economically for a number of historic and current institutional issues. Part of the reason Maori may be less liklely to attend appointments might be things like;
  
  a) Insufficient funds to actual travel to the hospital (broken car, no money for petrol, no money for a bus)
  
  b) Unable to get time off from low wage manual job. These jobs can often be much less flexible than white collar work.
  
  With regards to following instructions, who knows. Lower educational outcomes leading to an inability to follow instructions? Inability to travel to the chemist for repeats?

    I just drove past one of our local marae. Carpark absolutely chocko with primarily later model cars. Actually overflowing onto SHW1.
    
    No shortage of transport there.
    
    My own medical centre is a maori health provider as the GP has been a mate for over 30 years. No only do the staff and the doctors bend over backwards I see very few old dungers in the carpark but often the consulting fees are never paid but picked up by the DHB or written off within the practice.
    
    Too many excuses and not enough “giving a shit” in my opinion.

  Don’t forget that some cancers are often (but not always) a product of choice (like smoking etc).
  There are also active advertising etc to get Maori and Pacifica women to have testing done and also advertising and programmes aiming at reducing smoking amongst Maori and Pacifica.
  That is explicit race based help aimed specifically at them and many still ignore it and blame the system when they get sick.
  
  I’m not religious at all but there is a funny God story that is relevant here:

  There is a culture amongst many Maori that education is bad (as aopposed to asians having a culture that prioritises education).

  Maybe we start looking at these flights on a per person basis if we are close to destruction as these space pilots think and keep telling us.
  How many barbecues could you fire up with the wanted destruction of the climate by these aircraft and their selfish use.
  Didn’t 66,000 litres av gas get burnt off to feed a baby once.

Friend came home from Europe for holiday in November. Spent two weeks in MIQ and went back to Europe mid-January.

Was open that that was the length of her stay. Never was presented with a bill for the cost of MIQ and left without paying.

Another flawed aspiration it appears. If you want people to pay the cost you must raise an invoice.

I’m sure Chippy would say it was a ‘one-off”. His press conferences are getting more and more “Chernobyl” by the day.

Is the Billion Trees Scheme for the chop?

Previous scenarios for New Zealand have involved staggering amounts – millions of hectares – of new plantation forestry. This has found its way into government policy, through the Billion Trees programme, and subsidies via the Emissions Trading Scheme. In turn this has generated concern both from farmers, that farmland is being converted to less productive uses, and from climate advocates, who argue that trees represent a finite and risky store of carbon. Focusing on them can act to delay the exit from fossil fuels and limit land-use options available to future generations.

The commission has heard these concerns and responded with a new proposal. It still involves 300,000 hectares of new plantation forests, but it also contains a new ingredient, 300,000 hectares of permanent native forests, planted on steep, less productive land. These store carbon at a much slower rate, but can keep doing so for centuries, and also lead to biodiversity gains. The commission argues that this is a plausible way to offset the small remaining emissions from fossil fuels. [1]

Is writer, Robert McLachlan, actually saying here that the Climate Commission is advocating the Billion Tree Programme be cut now to 300,000 hectares – in exotics terms, at 1,000 trees approximately to a hectare, so to roughly 300 million trees – and that they all be natives: much more expensive to plant, sequester less carbon, but longer lasting?

How come this comment appears in the international Guardian UK, before seeming to feature in local media?
And have the goalposts being reset from a One Billion Trees Scheme to About Three Hundred Million?

“Forests have a role to play, but we can’t plant our way out of climate change,” the Commission wrote.

“Relying heavily on forestry before 2050 is likely to make maintaining net zero long-lived greenhouse gas emissions after 2050 difficult. It would delay action, lead to higher cumulative emissions and make the job ahead of us more difficult.”

Waste from plantation forests should be turned into biofuel and new, permanent native forests should be planted to serve as a long-term sink for residual emissions. [2]

  We can but hope. Already the Billion Trees scheme has seen dozens of productive farms sold off to overseas consortiums, and planted exclusively in pine, much of which will never be harvested.
  
  Planting trees is fine, but it needs to be the right tree, in the right place, and for the right reason. Planting thousands of hectares of productive farmland in pine, solely to take advantage of carbon credits, is short-sighted policy that will have a significant negative and long-term effect on rural New Zealand.

      There were always kids who found it financially hard to get to university – those who lived outside the main centres when there were fewer universities and polytechnics, in particular.
      
      But are the kids who went to university from the 1980s or so on the real winners, MCos?
      
      Most graduates start working life with a big debt. Heaps of them make less than a good tradie does, and tradies generally have a better chance of starting their own business and potentially doing very well.

principals had noticed that new teachers were avoiding taking older age groups in primary schools because they were worried they could not teach the required maths.

“NMSSA shows that learners aren’t getting enough mathematics teaching time, and that they aren’t getting a good balance in their ‘maths diet’ because teachers are not confident teaching what they don’t know.

If teachers can’t teach at the level they are being employed to teach, then there’s something seriously wrong with their Teacher Training Course.

    Since it has been compulsory for pupils to take Maths to Year 11 (5th Form) for yonks, you would assume that all of those who go on to teach primary /intermediate school-aged children could manage to teach this very basic-level maths.

  How about something seriously wrong with the maths curriculum? Maths and numeracy are not the same. Most people don’t need to be trained to think like mathematicians but they do need a good basic learning of number facts.
  
  The syllabus could be modified drastically to be useful and teachable. Only select people should be concerned with learning maths. Who needs to know what the sq root of pi is? For most people basic counting is the first requirement. When GST calcs are taught through to year 10 that is too much. The classical teaching of number facts by rote is efficient and quick.

    Be careful with these rhetorical Q: I once told my 5th form maths teacher that Pythagoras’ Theorem was thousands of years old nonsense with no real-world application apart from School Cert Exams (err, that’s almost verbatim)… Fast forward to me tiling a kitchen in 2009 and having to cut a triangular piece for a corner. Oh GAWD. Needless to say I got in touch with him (ret.) and he *remembered* the comment, and appreciated the humble pie.
    
    PS: Life hack: hire professional tilers, even with the laser levelling I was out by about 10 mm over 40 feet (slate, herringbone pattern)… drove me nuts until I left the house b/c I always KNEW.

Where are the thoughts about ways to allow people to isolate at home with adequate security.

It looks like our little Aotearoans are not so awe-sum but a bit more awe-dumb.

Given the type of “experts” we’ve had being consulted on CV19, I don’t hold out much hope tor the experts being consulted here.

Poor maths performance (of a whole cohort) really comes down to crap teaching. Of course there will be individuals that do better or worse, but when the statistics drop like this then it is all down to teaching – or the crapness thereof.

In general maths requires helping pupils achieve some basic concepts. Once they understand those and “get it”, then the rest goes well.

I am fortunate in being one of those that “got it” easily in school and, for me, getting as low as 95% was a personal humiliation and disaster.

I did spend a lot of time helping others and, for the most part I could couch someone failing dismally (say 20%) to get a reasonable mark (say 60%) in their final exams in a couple of days – including giving them a quick calculus 101.

A recurring comment was of the form: “But this is so easy now I understand. Why do the teachers make it so complicated?”

My kids were homeschooled. Apart from giving them a reasoable grasp of the basics, and a few pointers later on, they were both pretty much self taught in maths. Both completed the whole maths syllabus quickly and one started doing uni-level maths at age 15.

It really does not have to be that hard. It just needs competent teachers.

  I was flabbergasted when I saw the unnecessarily complicated way my grandson was being taught maths. He is 9, in year 5. When I was taught if you wanted to add say 24 and 36 you put one above the other, added the 6 and 4 = 10, wrote down zero and carried the 1 across, added 2 and 3 plus the 1 = total 60. Now they have this weird way that I simply can’t fathom and it is complicated, as I said. Why? Why bugger up a good system? His teacher told the parents NOT to help their children with maths because they would only confuse them. No wonder we are falling badly behind.

      Disagree Ian, if you can’t do it manually when you get to calculus you simply can’t do it.
      
      Similarly, our MD and PharmD students likely will have an App for their dosage calculations (including infusions etc) but if they don’t have an understanding of the working, they risk e.g. punching in the wrong #, being out by an order of magnitude, not instinctively understanding that and severely injuring the Px. Teaching them longhand is as much about imparting intuitive understanding of the dimensions of these equations as it is any real skill set.

        When was the last time you did a 3 digit x 5 digit long multiplication “by hand”? Why would you?
        
        That said, I fully support that a one-significant-digit version should be done to make sure the decimal is in the right place. Like we had to do in the old days when using a slide rule ….. some call this a “reasonability check”
        
        I wasn’t talking about an app – just a calculator. I agree that an app is vulnerable to miskeying when the underlying sums are a bit opaque. And using the app does not test whether one understands where it all comes from.

        Yes Maggy, agreed the orders out should be instinctive if taught long hand (repetition, repetition, repetition). Also, a mistake in a Physics or Maths exam doesn’t kill or debilitate a patient (I’m not exaggerating, I teach Pharmacokinetics, including therapeutic drug monitoring and dosage calculations (oral, IV, infusion))… Random impertinent fact, the ex- Mr Pharma (Civil Structural) could *almost* be out an order of magnitude and buildings wouldn’t fall down – its all a matter of perspective.

        Couldnt agree more.
        Calculations would take say 1 hr to complete and 3-4 pages.
        Everything was longhand.
        Cadets could do most on calculator in about 5 mins.
        However , I could ( mostly did actually) go back through my working and immediately see the problem.
        Boils down to, You MUST understand the problem, Not just do it.
        In our exams we had to get 80% pass mark in some subjects. Stability was one.

        I’m not being cute. I put some time in over the last couple of years doing voluntary maths teaching in a year 8 class in a decile 1 school. We were using an on-line thing (Mathletics) that I thought was OK except for the bits where they just asked for the results of a long div/mult. Maths is all about algebra, not mensuration.
        
        In frustration I bought $2 calculators from AliExpress and handed them out like lollies.
        
        Long div/mult is mindless stuff that is slow and time-consuming and teaches nothing about the analytic side of what maths (algebra as opposed to arithmetic) is about. It was all made a bit harder by the fact that the procedures taught today are different to what we all learned and I never did get my head around long division.
        
        I was unimpressed to find out that calculators are generally not permitted at high school in year 9.

    herein lays the problem. The kids must learn one way only. This is mostly without any logical step but get too the answer at the end.
    Maths in my field I not only have to arrive at an answer but MORE importantly I have to understand it.

      You would love my field… there’s always multiple ways to get to a PK answer – most of them out by a decimal place or two, sometimes up to half a sig. fig. Its because we bend the math to the biology. We also use a lot of simplifications of pure maths that are “close enough for govt. work”
      
      Invariably I get 30-50 scripts into marking a final exam (PharmD class n = 230, MD class n = 280) and I find a clever clogs that’s found ANOTHER way that isn’t on my model answer. So I just spent the extra 5 mins recalculating, and if they’re right; add it to the model for marking.

      100% with you there. Math is an “understanding” subject. You need to be able to set up the calculation – run a one-sig-digit ruler over it to get the order of magnitude of the answer, then bang it into a calculator. Teaching the mechanics of long division is not a lot of help.
      
      When I was at high school three thousand years ago, in addition to long div/mult we were also taught how to extract a square root. It looked a bit like long division but was worse. Despite the fact that our book of log etc tables also had a “square root”section ….
      
      Not a skill that I EVER used ….

      Yes, Agree about about Maths. Some the methology is more important and some the answer.
      But it all boils down to understanding it and what you are looking at.
      Im guessing you will have an eye for “variations” and trained eye will pick it out .
      Compass and Magnetism, there’s a “dark” art.
      Sperical trignometry and Napiers Rules. May as well thrpw in Gyroscopic inertia as well.
      And of Celestial Navigation.
      
      The point is we do maths for different reasons and therefore required results.
      Of which you must have the Basic understanding and broaden your knowledge from there in your line of work / Interest.

    Yes, as a bench scientist I can multiply #s in my head very fast, particularly when I’ve had a long stretch of experiments. Often my Grad students are still pulling out their iPhones, tablets etc and I’m calling the number… You get the odd one that has cultivated this skill though, they tend to go far.

        The mathematician Professor Hardy recounts a visit to see Ramanujan who was sick at Putney hospital.
        
        Hardy thinking of something to say remarked that he had traveled to the hospital in a taxi cab with the number 1729, saying to Ramanujan that it seemed to be a rather dull number and hoped it wasn’t a bad omen.         I got my job because of being numerically fluent. I could work all day with numbers but it was only arithmetical processing. I could then remember numbers readily too.
        For many fluent number crunching is superfluous.
        The maths adventures where much are reduced to sets and properties is quite different. For most being able to prove the sum of an infinite series is irrelevant.
        We waste a lot of effort attempting to create mathematical understanding when all we need for most is basic numeracy and the ability to recall a reasonable quantity of number facts (not their properties) to facilitate living.

  For those with a “maths brain” maths can be fun but without that special personal flavour it’s almost impossible for them to understand.
  I was one of the top of the College in algebra, trig and calculus but I don’t think like a mathematician and came a cropper when a perverse audit teacher thought we should have a dose of it because he did think that way.
  
  Mathematicians took over computing too and the languages became more obtuse and more difficult for many women programmers who did not think or code in the ultra abstract–Cobol worked, Algol was far out. Those same people have invaded the school maths curriculum and made it their territory. Time for a re-write.

Hope you’re at least up to Python or R (I think there was an interesting discussion about FORTRAN on KB a few months before Xmas … I speak a little as it was an interface for a program I used to use [badly]. As far as I understand, FORTRAN speakers come out of India now almost exclusively, and they’re needed for some interfaces at places like Bell Labs and NASA.       I did refer to Cobol although I have never used it. I have programmed in some terse languages like Wang Basic where a char could do a lot.
      Cobol I saw in operation and found that the women programmers of the time were happy in it. I believe they got pushed out when the mathematicians created a different style of language, symbolic not descriptive with code blocks that were self proving or contained.
      
      I have written in Clipper, assembler and even machine code.
      Python I would use if I was still coding and R looks good for the number crunching I once did by hand. My one encounter with Fortran was when I commissioned some data crunching for a client and the reports all came back with “9” substituted for “0”. I understand a current UK Epidemiologist used it last year for his predictions about Covid population risk. Perhaps he used Fortran 56

  There’s a couple of problems. ASSK has fallen a long way from the moral icon she once was. She sold her soul to the military in pursuit of power and then threw the Rohingya under the bus. As a consequence she’s hugely popular at the polls, but at huge cost abroad and now domestically.
  Is she worth anything more than a perfunctory statement?

I think that todays problems education arose from the decision back in the day, to promote children through primary school socially in order to keep the ‘slower’ ones in their age group.
Before then, a child might spend an extra year in the ‘primers’ or, if a bit slow in reading, stay back until they had reached the syllabus standard required. There was no stigma attached, just an acknowledgement that that particular child was not ready to advance just yet. Sometimes kids were promoted after just one term once they had caught up – and this was regarded as a real achievement. They would start writing with chalk, then a pencil and then a page with lines, and then ink – each step a mark of success. They learnt math by chanting ‘times tables’ in class. There were standards to be achieved.
But sometime in the ’70’s it became twisted and all about the supposed hurt feelings of the child left behind – and so we end up where we are today. Somehow teachers have become the parents, and the real parents criticise their efforts.
And, it seems, no-one is satisfied with the outcomes.

I see that the Climate Change Commission wants to literally ban all use of gas.

While Australia is in the middle of 100 billion USD investment in natural gas exports. And consumption of natural gas globally is forecast to double by 2050.

Honestly this reminds me of Pol Pot year zero. Are New Zealanders going to accept this?

The fray caused on Wall Street by small individual share investors seems to have calmed somewhat today.

However, Robinhood Markets Inc, the small punters’ champion, has raised $US3.4 billion since last Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Robinhood and other brokerages were flooded with orders to buy and sell a handful of popular stocks last week.

GameStop, whose shares started the retail surge, closed on Wall Street on Friday at $US325. It began the year at under $US20. Today (Monday on Wall Street) GameStop dived to $US212 after the opening bell and closed at $US225.

There is a gap between investors placing buy orders and their cash being cleared by the broker.
Robinhood had to impose trading conditions on Wednesday. This fuelled resentment among Robinhood’s small punters, many of whom, the WSJ reported, saw it as Wall Street trying to restrict them.

Shares in AMC Entertainment Holdings, a financially troubled cinema chain, rose 500 per cent this year until Friday, and lifted another 11c to $US13.37 at the close.

Robinhood’s trading app was downloaded more than 600,000 times on Friday alone, according to analysts at JMP Securities, the WSJ reports.

By comparison, the app was downloaded around 140,000 times during its most active day in March 2020, when coronavirus fears sent share prices down sharply.

Wall Street as a whole closed up 0.8 per cent today (Monday trading), as last week’s manic buying switched to futures in silver, which had their biggest one-day rise for 11 years.

Small punters in the sharemarket used to be called Mum and Pop investors, but that term doesn’t fit the Robinhood types. They tend to be young and anti-Establishment.

An excellent guest post by Alwyn Poole today; there are many points to consider and I think I agree with them all. One that is strong on my list of directions we are headed, that I don’t like, is education. He put forward this, “When I was asked by a group of New York educators why the down-trodden groups in NZ accept the education results of their children without taking to the streets in protest, I had no answer.” At present we have no media that supports the average New Zealander’s interests. Alwyn calls for “Parliamentary opposition and media need to do their job superbly”. Unfortunately; I can’t see either happening. Firstly” it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.” Secondly the media graduate from, what must be the most woke establishment in NZ. Even the ones who have been in media for a while are just as bad. If for one moment a media person tells the truth, or say/do anything controversial, then without trial, or fact-checking, or context checking, you are canceled. Is John Banks an example?
What is the tie between education, government, and media? This year the government has issued a new curriculum to schools. It is very long and hence not many people will read it. I believe it is in line with “The Great Reset”. This has been done by a very left socialist government. The media has said virtually nothing about it, let alone study it and convey the meaning of it, to the general public. I find ‘brainwashing’ of our children in schools totally abhorrent. When are New Zealanders going to do something about this? What can we do about this? If we do nothing, then we to are guilty to a lesser extent, but still guilty.

  For Tree Privet – probably only Fiordland and the cooler parts of the South Island are relatively free of this plant.
  
  I hardly ever encountered the plant in the southern half of the NI when I was doing reserve surveys during the 1980-1990s.
  
  (It was first recorded growing wild in NZ in 1958)
  
  I’m surrounded by the stuff here in Gisborne and am for ever pulling young seedlings out of my garden…

[Well, I guess people should be grateful that Beijing Biden hasn’t started a war two weeks into his term. I guess defence stocks might be up a point or two.]

HDPA was just speaking with the rooster whose wife and kids were given permission to self isolate in their $3mill house.
He was saying his kids had some kind ‘behavioural issues’, which was given full consideration by those responsible for the decision to allow them to move home early.

Good on them for taking the sensible approach they did in the circumstances.

  The guy’s got twelve kids, which seems to be the way of the world in Gloriavale. He left because he couldn’t stand the place anymore.

What I will continue to point out, is that if KB wish to maintain their status and mana as the “best and fairest” then they should be sensitive to and react to my claims that “lately their halo has slipped”. Moderation sometimes now shows up as partial… and wokeish (Horrors!)

It will be a tragedy if KB goes the way of other ratbag blogs purely because no one at KB sees fit to properly react/respond to the/my charges of poor or worse judgments/balance OK?

Feel free to demure … now that’s!! what KB is all about … NOT the supercilious superior moderator response* to my serious charges OK?
