ACT leader David Seymour appears to be confused. Twice in as many days he has declared “The best thing we can do for freedom is avoid another five week lockdown.”

Well, bravo. Not locking people in their homes, closing businesses, leaving acute illnesses untreated, increasing family trauma and mental illness constitutes freedom. However he departs from rational thought with the assertion that mandatory tracking of citizens using state technology is what is needed to prevent another lockdown.

It’s not.

The only thing the leads to another lockdown is continued manifestation of this government’s un-democratic overreach underpinned by having its cherry-picked ‘experts’ themselves cherry-pick Covid fear porn, which is subsequently pushed at citizens via the state-funded media sycophants.

Until now Seymour has been one of the few reasonable public voices in this debate. But sadly he has resorted to baseless, libertarian-busting assertion that having the state collect details of where and when every citizen moves will somehow ‘prevent a lockdown’.

  He doesnt seem to have a problem with the fact that 1000’s of his voters lost their twitter accounts yesterday at the same time. Twitter has become an echo chamber for liberals now. I emailed him and he said twitter is a private company. Sure but they are censoring opinions so they have become a publisher. Section 230 needs to be revoked.

    The private company argument holds some water but breaks down when:
    1) They are monopolies.
    2) There’s collusion between providers to defeat competition.
    3) There is collusion between the state and the providers.
    
    Here we have all the major communications platforms (FB, Google, Twitter, Apple) working together to shut down conversations they do not want and shut down platforms that provide alternatives.
    
    Would he say the same if Z, BP, Toyota and Ford were working together to set petrol prices or paying working with Labour to keep a sweet deal going? Naah, they’re just private companies.

      These moves by the Big Tech aren’t about violence. If they were, they would have deleted tens of thousands of accounts over the last few years– like the mostly peaceful BLM activist who Tweeted “white people may have to die”. Or the countless others who have advocated for violent uprisings against the police. Its not about violence, but ideology. If you hold different beliefs to the ‘Party’, then you risk being canceled or ‘de-platformed’ by Big Tech.
      You’d better watch what you say– your livelihood, social life, and safety may just depend on it. Or else, you will be purged, canceled, deleted from the Internet, denied payment processing by Visa, PayPal, etc. Next we’ll see denial of essentials like healthcare.     I am not sure why anyone, including Trump, want 230 revoked. Without section 230 providing immunity from prosecution all of those companies would have to remove anything offensive, to virtually anyone. Trumps account would have been removed years ago. As would anything about QAnon. It would become exactly the safe haven liberals seem to want. Or they would become unusable and close down.

      One option is that S230 is modified. If you want the protection of a carrier or utility, such as the Post Office carrying letters which may contain hurty words, then you provide the service only and cannot interfere with the contents except where plainly illegal content. If you alter or censor the content, you are a publisher with editorial responsibility and not protected.

      It’s called realpolitik. There is nothing to be gained by ACT by being seen to be in anyway endorsing Trump or anyone close to him, plenty to loose by catching some of the splatter from the shitshow that is US politics. In a weeks time no one will remember or care about Liddell and Seymour can get back to being the leader of the opposition and concentrate on things that actually matter to his voters.

    You’ve got that wrong. Censoring opinions doesn’t make them a publisher, it ensures they are not liable for the content if done within a reasonable time. But if it the same person whose comments are causing objections or are breaking defamation and other Laws and the host allows them to continue, they take liability.
    They are a publisher however for other reasons including successful legal action against comments made online in other cases in New Zealand and elsewhere.
    Your main objection is that you want to defend comments that a publisher has decided to delete or to silence a person whose comments the publisher considers inflammatory.
    In this case, they’ve apparently made decisions about people who might probably make comments it won’t approve, maybe because of a history of that person or a group they are in. If that is the case hard to agree that the publisher doesn’t have the right.

    In a blog post, the company said the two messages violated its policy against glorification of violence since they “could inspire others to replicate violent acts”
    
    You be the judge. Feeling violent?! Unable to control yourself. Incited yet?
    
    The WashPost reported, “Twitter bans Trump’s account, citing risk of further violence”
    
    That headline is defamatory and misleading because the tweets weren’t violent in the least!!!

    My second issue with the private company is that if a private company bans a group based on their political, religious beliefs or race that is a human rights violation.
    
    Third legal crossover, if twitter and facebook have an almost monopolistic domination of the lines for online communication, and they ban the voice of one political ideology. Should that be declared as a political donation? What laws cover international political interference with our nation?

  Logic says the more information you have the better you can ascertain the reason, cause or path of the issue. That is assuming that you are disinterested in any other uses.

  The tracking AP simply has nothing to do with preventing Covid19, or “saving” us from it.
  It can’t possibly do that.
  It tracks movement of citizens and can on offer a map of contacts and possible infections AFTER the case has been discovered.
  If this disease spreads this fast and takes 3 days to incubate.
  eg If the case (person) comes into “close contact”, whatever that means, with 10 people per day and they each contact 10 per day.
  By the time you see it 10’s of thousands will have it before you see the first one.
  Rendering tracking useless except for analysis AFTER the fact…long after the fact.
  But that has not been the case.
  Some things to look at.
  Their response was slow and ill targeted.
  As the “Influenza pandemic response plan 2017” says (on the MoH web site and available to all) “Keep it out”, was not followed and as I suspect, not even read.
  Shutting down the economy, as they did, just weakens our ability to respond to this disease should it last beyond the short term and wrecks our ability to respond to any other potential threat.
  The things they did wrong
  Not follow an already written and considered plan.
  Waited and ignored the danger of this, so obvious from the Italian experience.
  Panicked when they finally realized, action was required. (locking down the economy, instead of defending the weakest against it)
  MIQ…is a joke response…even in the middle ages, they knew to isolate infection, FAR from your health population…NOT in luxury hotels in the middle of your health population.
  Conclusion
  They got lucky with the level of infection, it could have been much worse, but nothing they actually did mitigated the incursion or spread of this disease.
  Instead it and other factors of their governance(loose term), have damaged our economy into the distant future.
  Note how they are downplaying or ignoring the MASSIVE debt. they have run up.
  If they are ever asked it’s Covid19’s fault not their response to it.
  ie a micro organism made all these decisions did it?

    Nonsense. You inflate prospective new infections to 10s 0f 1000s because you claim that the app doesn’t work.
    We didn’t have that many last time and the projections for the variant infection rate averages 50%w higher – if it got a start here.. To date there have been 2228 in 10 months, the majority of those must be close to being those detected at the border. The app does save others from infection because close contacts are traced and put into isolation, people who have been in the same places as those contacts (as recording on the apps) are notified as are the places of possible contact. That prevents further spread while testing is bolstered. Preventing further spread is stopping new infections.

      The AP traces PAST/HISTORICAL stats. It does NOTHING for prevention.

  One thing about being on the right is that we deal in facts. Here are a few.
  
  1) NZ is committed to an eradication strategy, and there is no viable political scenario where that is going to change.
  2) The objective is to reduce the cost of it (e.g. don’t have more lockdowns, this is what ACT campaigned on)
  3) Digital contact tracing can make a big difference to containing outbreaks without requiring lockdowns. It means that people who may be infected can be identified and tested rapidly while everyone else remains mobile.
  4) The NZ COVID Tracer App stores your movements on your phone, you have to option of sharing the data if you are infected and wish to help trace an outbreak and prevent a lockdown (which would be a very good thing to do)
  5) Digital CT only works if everyone, or nearly everyone, does it
  5) At the moment people are not, and that could be very costly to a lot of people who’ve done nothing wrong. Think of business people you know who can’t handle another lockdown.
  
  In summary this is a low cost way of helping trace an outbreak without needing to go into lockdown that does not erode your privacy in any way.

I’ve been hearing talk about the behaviour of the Mob in Chch hospital while the leader’s son is in a coma in ICU.

Gangsters are being noisy, making a mess and generally intimidating and showing absolutely no regard/respect for the needs of other patents and staff.

I’m not at all surprised. Gangs have always been trying to extract whatever they can from society and use intimidation to get it. Their contribution to making the world a better place: absolutely zero.

      Edsel was actually named after one of the Ford kids who died an untimely death. As far as the family was concerned that made the Edsel car a monument to the boy and their emotional attachment screwed up their decision making. Nobody wanted to hear about canning the Edsel.

First off they conflate prosecution with convictions, then they can’t understand percentages.

Methinks percentages are a perhaps a colonial construct and not fully understood. The number is more than 100 times what they have written here:.

Approx 0.5% got CONVICTED and gawd alone knows how many were actually prosecuted.

  One of my Ecology lecturers stopped mowing his lawns and told the neighbours when they complained that he was conducting research on the developing ecosystem…. They were thrilled to have a research site in their midst.
  
  I tried something similar when we first moved to Island Bay and were too poor to afford a lawn mower…had a major rethink after some bugger threw a lit match or fag into the dried grass stalks on the berm.

    After putting in some new drainage this spring I was on a ‘no mow the new grass’ strategy so gave up mowing till it took. It didn’t. I suspect old seed. The second effort did but the same strategy was employed. The upshot is where the old grass continued to grow an extraordinary flowering garden has arrived. For a while I pulled out the the paspalum and a few other undesirables. Now the lawn is a riot of flowering plants, attendant bees, an amazing number of small skinks and assorted other interesting fauna and flora. The kids can still find the trampoline but for the life of me I can’t remember where I put the mower. Happy days.

  We carry pre-printed flyers around with us that we slip into peoples letterboxes who don’t mow their berms.
  The message is probably a wee bit rude, but it’s amazing the results we get.

  On one side lives a family of slovenly South Africans who left their own grass grow wild when the mowers broke down. Eventually the landlord sent a contractor round to hack down the undergrowth.
  One day some Mormons came by and helped out, but there’s a heavy price to pay if you get too chummy with those dudes.

They would have preferred an “inclusive” replacement for the old brand, Coon, rather than the new brand name, Cheer.

Aboriginal activist Stephen Hagan will continue his action against the maker, seeking damages of $A2.1 million. Hagan has been battling the cheese maker for 20 years over the Coon name.

For nine years from 1998, Hagan fought Toowoomba Sports Ground Inc over a spectator facility, the E. S. “Nigger” Brown Stand, named after a white rugby league player whose nickname apparently was a play on his blond hair.

When the ageing stand was pulled down, the company agreed not to re-use the name.

Hagan also too issue at a Toowoomba chemist using golliwog dolls in a window display.

One of his current campaigns is to have removed from Scrabble vocabulary the words: abo, coon, and boong.

  In South Africa the coloured people (ie. people of mixed race descent) in the Cape Town area hold the annual Coon Carnicval. Being a member of a Coon squad is a big deal with colourful uniforms etc.

As an entertainment journalist, I’ve had the opportunity to cover Trump for over a decade, and in all my years covering him I’ve never heard anything negative about the man until he announced he was running for president. Keep in mind, I got paid a lot of money to dig up dirt on celebrities like Trump for a living so a scandalous story on the famous billionaire could’ve potentially sold a lot of magazines and would’ve been a Huge feather in my cap.
Instead, I found that he doesn’t drink alcohol or do drugs, he’s a hardworking businessman. On top of that, he’s one of the most generous celebrities in the world with a heart filled with more gold than his $100 million New York penthouse.
Since the media has failed so miserably at reporting the truth about Trump, I decided to put together some of the acts of kindness he’s committed over three decades which has gone virtually unnoticed or fallen on deaf ears.
In 1986, Trump prevented the foreclosure of Annabell Hill’s family farm after her husband committed suicide. Trump personally phoned down to the auction to stop the sale of her home and offered the widow money. Trump decided to take action after he saw Hill’s pleas for help in news reports.
In 1988, a commercial airline refused to fly Andrew Ten, a sick
Orthodox Jewish child with a rare illness, across the country to get medical care because he had to travel with an elaborate life-support system. His grief-stricken parents contacted Trump for help and he didn’t hesitate to send his own plane to take the child from Los Angeles to New York so he could get his treatment.
In 1991, 200 Marines who served in Operation Desert Storm spent time at Camp Lejune in North Carolina before they were scheduled to return home to their families. However, the Marines were told that a mistake had been made and an aircraft would not be able to take them home on their scheduled departure date. When Trump got wind of this, he sent his plane to make two trips from North Carolina to Miami to safely return the Gulf War Marines to their loved ones.
In 1995, a motorist stopped to help Trump after the limo he was traveling in got a flat tire. Trump asked the Good Samaritan how he could repay him for his help. All the man asked for was a bouquet of flowers for his wife. A few weeks later Trump sent the flowers with a note that read: We’ve paid off your mortgage.
In 1996, Trump filed a lawsuit against the city of Palm Beach ,
Florida, accusing the town of discriminating against his Mar-a-Lago resort club because it allowed Jews and blacks. Abraham Foxman, who as the Anti-Defamation League Director at the time, said Trump put the light on Palm Beach not on the beauty and the glitter, but on its seamier side of discrimination. Foxman also noted that Trump’s charge had a trickle-down effect because other clubs followed his lead and
began admitting Jews and blacks.
In 2000, Maury Povich featured a little girl named Megan who struggled with Brittle Bone Disease on his show and Trump happened to be watching. Trump said the little girl’s story and positive attitude touched his heart. So he contacted Maury and gifted the little girl and her family with a very generous check.
In 2008, after Jennifer Hudson’s family members were tragically murdered in Chicago , Trump put the Oscar-winning actress and her family up at his Windy City hotel for free. In addition to that, Trump’s security took extra measures to ensure Hudson and her family members were safe during such a difficult time.
In 2013, New York bus driver Darnell Barton spotted a woman close to the edge of a bridge staring at the traffic below as he drove by. He stopped the bus, got out and put his arm around the woman and saved her life by convincing her to not jump. When Trump heard about this story, he sent the hero bus driver a check simply because he believed his good deed deserved to be rewarded.
In 2014, Trump gave $25,000 to Sgt. Andrew Tamoressi after he spent seven months in a Mexican jail for accidentally crossing the US-Mexico border. President Barack Obama couldn’t even be bothered to make one phone call to assist with the United States Marine’s release; however, Trump opened his pocketbook to help this serviceman get back on his feet.
In 2016, Melissa Consin Young attended a Trump rally and tearfully thanked Trump for changing her life. She said she proudly stood on stage with Trump as Miss Wisconsin USA in 2005. However, years later she found herself struggling with an incurable illness and during her darkest days, she explained that she received a handwritten letter from Trump telling her she’s the bravest woman, I know. She said the opportunities that she got from Trump and his organizations ultimately
provided her Mexican-American son with a full-ride to college.
Lynne Patton, a black female executive for the Trump Organization, released a statement in 2016 defending her boss against accusations that he’s a racist and a bigot. She tearfully revealed how she’s struggled with substance abuse and addiction for years. Instead of kicking her to the curb, she said the Trump Organization and his entire family loyally stood by her through immensely difficult times.
Donald Trump’s kindness knows no bounds and his generosity has and continues to touch the lives of people from every sex, race, and religion. When Trump sees someone in need, he wants to help.
Two decades ago, Oprah asked Trump in a TV interview if he’d ever run for president. He said: “If it got so bad, I would never want to rule it out totally because I really am tired of seeing what’s happening with this country.'”
That day has come. Trump sees that America is in need and he wants to help. How unthinkable! On the other hand, have you ever heard of Hillary or Obama ever doing such things with their own resources?
Now that’s really unthinkable! Might be worth passing on!!!
Just shows we hired the right guy. If Hollywood , the liberals and the
media ever STOP harassing him, Trump will have time to do many more positive things for our country….the good ole United States of America!!
