In peak travel times NZTA is reserving one lane of the new Christchurch motorway for cars with more than one occupant. The objective is to incentivise car pooling and to combat climate change, congestion etc.

I am skeptical. People are not going to carpool just so they can use a special motorway lane. The more likely result will be an increase in congestion in the regular motorway lanes, increasing frustration, and emissions. While the ‘special’ motorway lane is under utilised.

The other thing they are promoting is a park and ride system where you park your car at the start of the motorway and catch a bus into the city. ? Good luck with that. Why would you do that when parking in Central Christchurch is plentiful and inexpensive?

This is a classic example of transport planners trying to force people to do things which are highly inconvenient. Expect lots of unhappy commuters. Of course there will be no back down.

  It is all very well having a priority lane on a 5 lane highway, reducing it to 4 lanes for normal traffic.
  
  It is something entirely different having a three lane highway and cutting that to 1 by devoting 1 lane to buses and another to carpool vehicles.

    Valid Point. On the northern motorway with all three lanes, the traffic will flow better if all three lanes are for use by all. Better traffic flow occurs when cars change lanes to get past slow drivers, or change lanes to take exits, something not easily done if one lane is off limits and in many cases empty.
    
    And there is the bureaucracy that will be required to monitor said dedicated lane.

You couldn’t make up this sort of nonsense. This man hates cars and has a clear agenda to force us all onto bikes and into buses and he is paid by the ratepayers to give supposedly expert, balanced and presumably objective traffic planning advice.

  Near our house is a motorway on ramp that is controlled by lights at busy times. There’s one lane for buses, electric cars, or cars with multiple occupants, that isn’t controlled. While most people follow the rules there is still a steady stream of cars with one occupant who sail straight through. There’s little risk because it’s rarely policed.
  Why do people do this?
  Are they just plain selfish? Where’s the civic responsibility?

  Let us assume this is correct, it leads to 3 possibilities
  
  1. Increased CO2 concentrations lowers global average temperature
  2. It makes not a blind bit of difference
  3. It increases average temperature.
  
  If 1 or 2 are correct laughter at the scientists who study these things is appropriate, but if 3 is correct we may be concerned.
  
  It has been demonstrated with ice core sampling and other means that CO2 concentration is increasing 2000 times as fast as in any previous epoch, so once again, if 3 is correct, there is cause for concern. Except for a country like New Zealand, where productivity should rise for a range of reasons.
  
  It was predicted in the 70s that fossil fuel burning and CO2 would increase temperatures at the poles faster than elsewhere. This is good science, making a falsifiable prediction.
  Is this cause and effect?
  It sure looks like it to me, but I am curious what cynics believe.

    “Over the last 800,000 years atmospheric CO2 levels as indicated by the ice-core data have fluctuated between 170 and 300 parts per million by volume (ppmv), corresponding with conditions of glacial and interglacial periods. The Vostok core indicates very similar trends. Prior to about 450,000 years before present time (BP) atmospheric CO2 levels were always at or below 260 ppmv and reached lowest values, approaching 170 ppmv, between 660,000 and 670,000 years ago. The highest pre-industrial value recorded in 800,000 years of ice-core record was 298.6 ppmv, in the Vostok core, around 330,000 years ago.       Doesn’t matter. The warming is very rapid; most of our CO2 is going into the oceans and biosphere, most of the heat is going into the oceans.

        The resolution of the early part of the CO2 measurements from ice cores is ~500 years. This has been spliced onto data from the last 50 odd years measured on at least 10 minute intervals.

    50%? Easy. Just do the accounting for agriculture properly.
    
    Instead of being emitters, agriculture actually harvests CO2 from the atmosphere and is a carbon sink.
    
    If we did the accounting correctly then the agriculture CO2 sink would then offset a significant % of our transport etc. That would easily reduce our CO2 emissions by 50%.

    What bearing does SB2’s ability, or inability, to set out a plan for reducing NZ emissions by 50% have on his case that climate change is happening?
    
    Is it seriously your contention that if a person can’t set out a proposed solution to a problem – that proves that the problem they identify doesn’t exist?
    
    Anyway, here is your answer. It would be ruinously expensive, and may well be technologically infeasible, to seek to reduce by 50% the greenhouse gase emissions from New Zealand.
    
    It would be far easier, far less expensive and have exactly the same global environmental impact, to reduce global emissions by an amount equivalent to 50% of NZ emissions, by funding emissions reductions in other countries where their emissions are more easily addressed.

  In a certain sense, Trump’s presidency was a secession-of-sorts from the society-destroying Globalism favoured and advocated by his opponents. But this couldn’t be tolerated, so an illegitimate re-taking over was decided upon and has occurred.
  
  Given the clearly unreconcilable societal divisions in the States, secession seems the only logical option. The only problem is, anti-Trumpers need his reviled supporters available to be dehumanised, stripped of their franchise, milked and exploited for their own ends. We are one of the most vulnerable countries in the world, with low infection rates and a high proportion of plainly unhealthy citizens. They need 2-3,000 extra vaccinators to do it, none of whom have yet been trained. Throw in a supply line hiccup, enough time for the anti-vaxxers to build up a head of steam and a complacent population, and this country is lining itself up for an epic fail. This hotel thing just seems hugely expensive with capacity constraints. Why not throw up some cabins in isolated areas with one road in and guarded? Especially in the summer it would be a much nicer experience than a hotel and way cheaper.

  The logistics get a bit hard.
  
  To make a significant dent in the problem we would need something like 500 beds. If these are “cabins” then they are probably single rooms. Knocking that up in a few weeks might be a bit of a challenge. Plus meals (communal eating would sort of defeat the purpose) and ditto for ablutions. The odd shop (eg liquor store and pharmacy for a start). Might need another 100 or so beds for staff. You would walk all over the RMA building a “town” like this in a hurry. Sewage treatment would be another non-trivial issue.
  
  There would be issues with finding the tradies to put it all together. There are shortages (not likely to be resolved next week) of all sorts of household fittings because of current shipping problems.
  
  I can’t say that these are insuperable problems, but they certainly real ones.
  
  FWIW I think (policed) home self-isolation is a more workable idea. I think that a lot of people faced with this or a 2-month wait for a $3000 hotel bed would grab it and behave themselves to boot. Count me in that group ….

      We never got any feedback on how the initial Wuhan lot made out in vans at Whangaparoa. IIRC there were 180-odd people in 100-odd vans. Catering and ablutions for 500 people would still be problematic. The water/toilet/shower arrangements could get a bit stretched with 2 weeks sitting in one place.

  There was a very good reason for this.
  As for me I cant get a voucher for MIQ unless i get an eTicket which I cant use because of unkwown date.
  Absolute shambles.
  Because I dont know the sign off date from my vessel hhow the hell can I book a eTicket and voucher etc.
  Seafarers are Key Workers and so far 46 countries have signed up to UN IMO protocols to state exactly this.
  Why stick me in a Hotel ( Same as last time) where the only chaance of catching it was at a quarantine MIQ facility is anybodys guess.
  Doesnt look like getting better any time soon, So what are the PLANS ? More Lockdowns, Borrow more to prop up conventional businesses that will fail?

    Well, that (self isolation at home) was tried back in March and April. A total failure because so many people didn’t follow the rules.
    
    Hence the managed isolation facilities which are widely supported but the public. Should there be more, yes. For instance Universities could use Halls of Residence, but these are probably already full of students, or soon will be.
    
    Hotels are perfect. There is no international tourism, so many would otherwise sit empty. They have all the required facilities for a 2 week stay. Not many other places have the full range of facilities.

Thousands of Argos buoys show the oceans are warming. The buoys move up and down in the water column; return data by satellite when they surface.

The oceans are where nearly all the heat due to manmade global warming is going. (93%)

As the oceans form a massive heatsink compared with the land surface and atmosphere this is a far easier way to judge the theory AGW.

There isn’t any doubt about AGW. CO2 is the control knob for Earth’s temperature, which over long periods changes naturally with insolation – Milankovitch cycles – but these do not account for all the warming be it natural as in the past of manmade as it is now.

Sorry guys, it’s CO2.

  I have been to Seward, Alaska twice. Exit Glacier is there. On the trail there are markers showing where the glacier was – going back to the 1920s I think. What they don’t tell you is the glacier used to go right down to Resurrection Bay some12 miles away. This was before the industrial revolution. I have also flown over the Harding Icefield which feeds Exit and many other glaciers. Huge, some 1800 sq k. All of that ice is not going to elt in a hurry.

  So the question is what are the previously referencing the data with?
  Sure we have had surface bouys floating around on currents but you mentioned Bouys that dive and come to surface and upload data such as salinity, temperature etc.
  These are relatively new and few and far between.
  However fully agree with Milankvitch cycles.
  FYI, We currently diving a ROV 2200 m now and recording the above amongst other thing repositioning sub sea beacons

Thort this little piece of intel might be worth sharing with the group.
Called into New World on my way home from Mass this morning. When I was heading back to my car, the Trolley guy (who I thinks got the hots for me) came running over. Now to be honest, I normally do everything I can to avoid him. But he’d obviously spotted where I’d parked by the door, and lay in wait for me to come out. He wanted to tell me, “…… that one of the other people he flats with had given him a bit of inside info, to start quietly stocking up on Toilet Paper to avoid the inevitable panic buying that could happen again very soon”.
I know he was only trying to be helpful, but I didn’t have the heart to tell him we still had about 30 cartons left in the garage from last year.

And this is only after consulting with other cardinals, bishops, etc, although he can decide not to follow their advice. So, it’s a special circumstance and very official
    
    So it’s not something where we consider that every single thing the Pope says or does in infallible. That is not to say he is not guided generally by the Holy Spirit day by day.   She was silent when violence and destruction broke out around Black Lives Matter protests few months ago. Major cities across the United States suffered extensive damage from rioters who broke into and looted stores, destroyed livelihoods, set fire to police headquarters and other buildings, and beat and killed bystanders.
  
  I believe she was aware of what was happening but chose to remain silent to follow the narrative which so far has served her well.

        Constitutional amendments require a two-thirds majority in both Houses, and ratification by three-fourths of the states, being 38. It can take several years. For that, and other reasons, including the lesser populated states not likely to be in favour, the Electoral College is safe (for many years to come).

  My prediction is quite the opposite.
  The Vice-President will not only have to stay in the United States. She will, at least while the Senate is in session, be tethered to her office in the Capitol so that she will be available to break any tie in a Senate vote that might come up.
  If the Democrats have a bill that the Republican half don’t like they could move for a vote to be taken. If there is a tie the bill is considered to have been defeated and she will have to be around to break the tie.

Is the standard of English the only criteria for a good blog.
Perhaps the emphasis on the need to eloquently and articulately express views is making a growing number of people feel left behind, left out.
Does this explain much of what has been occurring the US.
Is the only need in a politician that they are eloquent and articulate: glib?
When you are unable to make your views known, does this result in increasing danger of violence.
Has the race for equality by women resulted in a grow divide between inarticulate males and the solving of their problems.
Do they know that violence is not the answer – but how else can they show how deep their dissatisfaction is.
Also, does the increasing growth of female representation in their ranks show it is not, in fact, necessarily gender specific.

Just read an interesting comment on Mishtalk about a hypothetical 2nd Impeachment trial of Trump in the Senate. It requires 2/3 of senators present at a vote to convict, not 2/3 of Senators.

The house is likely to vote on an article of impeachment charging Trump with inciting an insurrection in a day or three and it is likely to pass. It will then be sent to the Senate and McConnell will presumably stonewall. Not sure if you can impeach someone who has already left office but if the new Senate does take up the House’s article it will have 50 Democratic senators. If say 4 Republicans vote to convict and 18 stay away from the vote Trump would be impeached. Not impossible as the result of impeachment would be that Trump could not run again. That might suit a fair chunk of the GOP, particularly those who are considering a run themselves.

Probably easier to effectively abstain than to vote to convict.

  Therefore, if it all happens next week, a quorum for the Senate to do business would be 50*, and a two-thirds majority would be 66.
  
  * Article I, Section 5, Clause 1: “[…] a Majority of each [House] shall constitute a Quorum to do Business; […].”
  
  If 18 Republicans absent themselves from the Chamber when the articles of impeachment are voted on, then there would be 81 senators present, two-thirds of which is 54. That means, in addition to all 48 Democrats, at least 6 Republicans would have to vote to convict.

      When Georgia certifies the results of the two run-off elections, no later than January 22, the two Democratic winners will travel to Washington, and at some point during the following week, will be sworn in as US senators. By then, Kelly Loeffler will no doubt have returned to Georgia.
      
      From then on, there will be 50 Democratic senators and 50 Republican senators.

Looks like big tech is now trying to silence Parler. The Parler app was removed from the Google Play store yesterday, and just now from the Apple store. Now Amazon is shutting down their servers and it could take a week before they come back up.

Sunday (tomorrow) at midnight Amazon will be shutting off all of our servers in an attempt to completely remove free speech off the internet. There is the possibility Parler will be unavailable on the internet for up to a week as we rebuild from scratch. We prepared for events like this by never relying on amazons proprietary infrastructure and building bare metal products.

We will try our best to move to a new provider right now as we have many competing for our business, however Amazon, Google and Apple purposefully did this as a coordinated effort knowing our options would be limited and knowing this would inflict the most damage right as President Trump was banned from the tech companies.

This was a coordinated attack by the tech giants to kill competition in the market place. We were too successful too fast. You can expect the war on competition and free speech to continue, but don’t count us out.

Authoritarian, and truly Orwellian. Can’t have the masses thinking thoughts and discussing ideas not approved by their overlords. These people disgust me.

Amazon notified Parler that it would be cutting off the social network favored by conservatives and extremists from its cloud hosting service Amazon Web Services, according to an email obtained by BuzzFeed News. The suspension, which will go into effect on Sunday just before midnight, means that Parler will be unable to operate and will go offline unless it can find another hosting service.
