Coronavirus panic is NOT the Antonine Plague (165-180), the Plague of Justinian (541), the Black Death (1347-1351), the Spanish Flu (1918) and the panic will vanish when voters decide they are sick of the bullshit stirred up by politicians, the paid-off media and self-serving doctors.

    What is the percentage of people who get infected and are so sick they are hospitalised ?

  Let’s hope not too long, the town I live in, in Tuscany has just advised that if their famous festival of the year may be cancelled in 2021 as in 2020 then that’s the death of it. The same will be for most towns in Italy and Europe as the longer this scamdemic goes on the more restaurants, tourist sites etc will just shut down. This is a shame as not only are people losing their lively hoods but also the culture and history of each town.

    The general rule in disputes is that those making a claim are required to support the assertion.
    
    It’s entirely reasonable that a very lengthy post omitted links to support each specific claim but, a challenge having been made, evidence supporting the 8000 claim or a link would be appropriate.
    
    NB, I am not expressing an opinion one way or the other about the number of dead voters, but an opinion about how claims are supported. What’s usually not appropriate is a demand that the challenger prove the claim’s negative.

Massachussets Institute of Technology spun off a company called Boston Dynamics in 1992 to develop robots.

A few days ago they released a video showing a little of what they have achieved. This video is of a number of robots dancing and is pretty amazing.

    Actually Boston Dynamics is a very valuable company selling robots that do real work. The company was purchased by Hyundai for US$921 million. No AmericanTaxDollarsAtWork. The video was just a New Years present for all to see what amazing work is being done in the field of robotics.
    
    Two years ago I had robotic surgery with a precision not otherwise achievable.

      Robotics is certainly useful for many things (eg. your surgery and factory assembly stuff), but that’s not what Boston Dynamics do.
      
      Boston Dynamics’ main interest is in movement over terrain. Their most famous robot is probably BigDog that was DARPA funded and designed for transporting equipment over rough terrain.
      
      Probably the most promising thing they have developed is their SandFlea jumping robot. That is their most practical thing, but it wouldn’t make a cute music video.
      
      In 30 years they have produced zero real useful output but have provided a massive playground for engineers.

      Lincoln Labs, a subsidiary organization of MIT gets about $1 billion per year from the US Government.
      It is very closely integrated with the University.
      That is just one connection, albeit probably the largest.

      I don’t know how much Harvard gets but it is certainly in the hundreds of millions per year.
      In March 2020 the University said this.

    To be fair, Boston Dynamics also sells more useful robots such as very advanced pick and place machines for warehouses.
    
    It’s trying to find more practical applications for the “dancing, walking” type robots in the link that info@cruzpro.com gives above, and you can see them in the link below.
    
    New Zealand needs robot systems to replace imported seasonal labour for our horticulture, otherwise these exports will in a decade or so be priced off the market.
    
    A Californian firm, Abundant Robotics, has been working with the big NZ orchardist, T&G Global, in Hawke’s Bay on apple picking systems. (T&G Global, a New Zealand firm that began as the co-operative, Turners and Growers, is now owned by BayWa AG, of Germany). The work entails new patterns of tree planting as well as the robots, which will complement rather than completely replace human pickers (at least at first).
    
    Scott Technology, headquartered in Dunedin, is doing great work with the meat-processor robots it’s developed and continues refining. Now it’s working with the salmon industry. Its work is so remarkable that Scott’s biggest shareholder (51.8 per cent) is now the world’s biggest meat processing company, which is Brazilian owned.
    
    Scott is also internationally re-conditioning and re-selling conventional industrial robots, and does automation work in fields as varied as mining sampling, and cabinet-production lines for international whiteware manufacturers.
    
    The company is far and away the leader of robotics in New Zealand, and probably in Australasia, but draws little media attention. It would be in the limelight if it made robots that could perform a haka.

  Where has any reasonable level of tax achieved anything?
  
  Tobacco taxes “worked” once they got to being 500 to 1000% of the cost of the product itself, but you could argue that changes in social behaviour had far more impact.
  
  If they make cheaper cars unaffordable then what is going to happen? People will hold on to their shittier older cars longer. The 14 year age of the Kiwi car fleet will just get higher.
  
  As for the social car programme, let’s just give that a name: KiwiCar and let’s give that an minister: Twyford.
  
  How is that going to work out? KiwiCars will get treated like shit. They will be stripped for spares and valuables and get dinged up in no time.
  
  Car sharing is a myth – mainly because:
  1) People personalise their cars and store stuff in them (shopping bags etc).
  2) People want to use cars at the same time (eg. rush hour).
  
  Sharing is an urban planner’s wet dream. It is not reality.

  What a wank! Most accidents are caused by people, not cars FFS. As for giving ex-rental cars to needy people, I can see people queuing up for them now. They are the same people who dine out for Christmas courtesy of a charity whilst us taxpayers feed their kids.     If given decent cars they will degenerate to the same condition as the average car parked around Taita, Naenae, Porirua, Otara, Mangere, etc. They are abused, never serviced, just driven till they are stuffed, with no Wof/Reg, and insurance never considered.
    No use financing these people into good vehicles as they will default on repayments and the vehicles not worth repossessing.
    When one works for a decent vehicle they are looked after, these cars would become similar to State homes . . . just used, abused with taxpayers paying all the costs.

There is an article about the increase in gang membership in NZ. This is a phenomenon that should concern all of us on a few levels. The first area of concern is WHY are young men joining gangs, and what are the consequences of gang membership. The latter is well covered, so I am going to discuss the former.

Two my mind there are a few main reasons why men join gangs. Firstly, as has been identified in the article, they are looking for brotherhood. My belief is that the rise in gangs has coincided with the destruction of brotherhood. There are almost no unapologetically male spaces left in society. Former male spaces have been co-opted to include females across the board. This includes everything from boy scouts right up to organizations like the police, army, and fire service. Gangs in many ways live like the warrior bands of old. Strong in-group loyalty, with out-group aggression. The term in our old European traditions was the mannerbrund. While some might claim there is no loyalty amongst thieves, they still to a large extent operate in an honour based system and are very sensitive to real or imagined insults or slights. If we were to look at the falling rates of sports participation, I think we would find that contributing to the loss of brotherhood more generally.

The second component about gangs is they create a pathway to achieving real goals that give a sense of identity and maturity. We have lost the traditions in the West that have been involved in the rituals of adulthood. This is characterised by the movies of Seth Rogen and his ilk, showing a complete lack of acceptance of adult hood and a desire to stay in a perpetual peter pan like state of childishness. This phenomenon is now seen frequently across the society, more commonly known as soy-boys. Gangs provide rituals and inclusion that creates a sense of identity. These rituals further develop the in group/out group relationship. We have lost an understanding of the power of these behaviours in our modern day life.

The further breaking down brotherhood is the increasing feminization of society. Society is increasingly becoming one giant safe space where everyone must live wrapped in wool, protected from themselves, mean words, and others. Gangs provide a counter to that for people so inclined. As alluded to above, even traditionally male organisations such as the Army are becoming more feminised both in make up and character. This is exacerbated by schooling that is largely oriented in nature and content towards girls, and delivered by women. The recent articles by Alwyn have touched on some of these points regarding males in education.

The last piece I would like to touch on is the role the family plays in the above. According to Stats NZ, 80% of Maori children are born out of wedlock. Those children are disproportionately
raised in single mother households where they have no positive male role models. They now don’t get them through Church, boy scouts, school, or sports clubs. They have no way to release aggression in a focussed and positive way. There are few job prospects. Gangs provide all of the above for them. In some ways, we may be lucky that gangs aren’t even bigger than they are.

No amount of prison will ever end gangs, because of the culture that society has created that leads to gangs being seen as a good option. In no way am I suggesting we go easy on gangs or gang members. Rather, I think we should see them as being a response to growing social conditions and the war on men. Furthermore, in some ways, they are the last bastions of male spaces, and while they take many traits to the extreme and past being positive, we must understand why young men are flocking in droves to join them. We are creating society that is fundamentally inimical to the expression of maleness. Until we correct that, we can expect headlines like this to continue ad infinitum.

    Excellent – I’ll add it to my list. One of the incredible features of New Zealander’s is this kind of blessed naivete. Having been a broadly homogeneous, high trust society for so long, it’s baked into us to lead our life with blinkers on to what is really going on around us. As we become more balkanized with fewer social ties and bonds holding us together other than the fact we live side by side, I’m sure that naivete will disappear, and those tentacles will become ever more apparent.

  This is vile. One of the people who died was an old friend of mine. He was working, and police made it clear there were no suspicious circumstances and no indication that drugs were involved. Someone in his party needs to intervene with Bridges and stop this.
  
  To be straight up, Bridges hasn’t made any accusations; he’s simply asked questions. Three people have died at music festivals in the space of a week, two of them apparently healthy young men.
  
  Given that getting drug testing set up at this summer’s festivals was such a priority for Labour that they railroaded through legislation under urgency and without select committee consideration, it’s only right that Bridges is asking questions.

I remember when

One wonders what sort 0f a living most NZ jockeys have considering the number of low stakes meetings.
Many smaller course have meetings consisting of races with a stake of $10,000, with perhaps one, or a best two, races worth $11,000 or $12,000 for non-maiden horses.
The breakdown for a race worth $10,000 is:
First $5400, Second $1500, Third $700, Fourth $400, then 5-14 $200 each.
New Year’s honours List jockey Lisa Allpress rode 5 winners at a meeting in Oamaru in June
She earned $1200 in stake money percentages which reduced to $200 when her expenses were deducted.
Yes there are riding fees for jockeys but the cost of travel, gear, penalties for riding offences, agents, etc., reduce these for non-winning riders too.
