      The same is true of many countries. (ie Multiple official languages) Including Canada. The French/English divide has strengthened over the years because of it!
      
      However Singapore has 4 official languages and doesnt suffer quite the same divide.

  It’s interesting the vanity of Te Reo because I wasn’t aware pre-colonial times they celebrated Christmas. A lot of languages don’t invent words that are not in their language but instead they embrace the new word. It’s one of the BS aspects of Te Reo that they invent words, then indoctrinate and force feed us with a language that’s really of no use whatsoever. Just saying. Merry Christmas all. A different Christmas for our family: my father is quite unwell, and is in hospital. I want to convey my admiration and thanks to the surgical and nursing staff at Wellington Hospital. To a person, every one of them has been amazing, attentive, proactive and caring. Thanks so much for giving up your Christmas day for us. You guys rock.

Call me a grinch but the way ive seen xmas evlove over the last 30yrs is quite sad.

The spirit of xmas is now almost gone and today its measured by the amount of spending and consumerism of overpriced junk.

If it wasnt for having 2 beautiful young children our household would no longer bother.
Once upon a time it was a great time when families got together and exchanged stories and shared their love due to being seperated and only the odd ph call and letter throughout the year was the only real contact they had. Now with facebook and ease of communication everyones up to date with drama and BS and from what i see around here xmas for many has just become an excuse to piss up and get slaughtered.

Those of you that have managed to keep a traditional xmas alive enjoy your day and have a wonderfull gathering, to the pisshead types please behave and avoid A&E and i wish a mega hangover for you 🙂

  In answer to a question on here last night; last time I was in Mogadishu (for work) was about 2008. Last time through Minneapolis/St Paul, last year May.

  @WP, in our family, as we are Christians, we keep it alive by keeping the focus on Jesus. The first thing we do is read from the Bible, talk about some of it, and pray. The gift giving comes later.
  Then we will be gathering with family

In my first real job I was quickly enlightened as to the true joy of Christmas for many families. I have been a strong supporter of Women’s Refuge ever since. TV ads set a bar for Christmas that many will never hurdle, and while I don’t begrudge anybody the wonderful times I enjoyed as a child with family and friends, I am always saddened by the thought that for many, Christmas is just not that much fun.

Uh, oh! Christians! It looks like you have a problem.

It would appear that the Infancy Narratives in Luke and Matthew “are not historical [but] were later-developed embellishments.” In other words, the narratives surrounding the birth of the historical figure referred to as Jesus Christ could be fake news!

One thing about the birth in question, that really annoys me, is that early church leaders in Europe simply concocted a story that Jesus was born, conveniently, about the time of the winter solstice. Why conveniently? Well, according to my reading, because people (not just in Europe) were already celebrating the solstice with feasts, and gift-giving (while Christianity was gradually taking over).

Wanting their congregations to practice Christianity exclusively, and no doubt realising they were never going stop them from having fun, they simply stated (over time) that Jesus was born nine months after New Year, which, until 1582 (1600 in Scotland; 1752 in England), was 25 March (the festival of the Annunciation).

In this regard, my further reading suggests that Jesus would actually have been born around late-September / early-October, which is why the story of his birth annoys me.

In conclusion, many of the comments at the linked article are rather good, and some are quite funny. Indeed, one commenter, guerillasurgeon (Bowalley Road’s regular commenter, Guerilla Surgeon?), says that “There are huge gaps in the accounts of Jesus’s life [and asks] Why? What was he doing for 18 years? Genuine question. :)”

There are some amusing responses: my favourite being, “He was workin’ the resorts around The Sea of Galilee, doing edgy standup poking fun at the romans and their israeli sycophants.”

The article is quite long, but well worth reading. Scott, KevO’Brien, Andrei, Raphael, Centrist, et al, especially – enjoy.

        Me, too. I need incontrovertible proof of the existence of Scott’s God, and until I get it, I will happily continue living my life as a secular humanist.
        
        (Unfortunately for me, of course, once the entity we commonly refer to as [Scott’s] God revealed itself to me, it would no doubt give me a couple of seconds, to enable me to realise my mistake (and unforgivable lack of faith), before smiting me dead in righteous fury.)

Have decided where possible, to try to not buy Chinese junk any more, to try support local or goods from other countries. It involves a lot of searching to find anything that’s not made in China! It made me realise just how much the Chinese have taken over the manufacturing sector and as Aussie is finding out, just how dangerous it is to have all your eggs in one basket. The CCP have realised just how much power they have and their blatant propaganda (lies if you like) and aggression shows it

This should be the US stimulus package instead of the handouts like $1T to Smithsonian. Copy and paste from unknown author.
In my opinion a real stimulus package offers these 5 items…
1. Cut off all foreign aid. No more free money. If a country needs money they can offer us premium land to buy in their country. If it’s got resale value we’ll buy it. Aside from that we need to buy nothing else; no imports right now. We can make all the products we need in the US. Take the money earmarked in this pathetic spending bill for foreign countries and give it back to taxpayers. Would equate to about $6k per person according to my math.
2. Congress takes a 50% pay cut over next 10 years and the money saved (my math says $600m) goes to the small gyms and restaurants suffering from asinine restrictions.
3. $1.6m goes to Trump. He donated his salary. After the crap he was dealt day in and out he deserves his money returned.
4. $1.2b for 25 million one way airplane tickets. Translation: One ticket for every illegal alien to return voluntarily to their home country. The amount of money we save by not giving away free school, healthcare, and food stamps is into the many billions annually. Plus, these voluntarily deportation flights free up ICE AGENTS to get MS-13 off the streets. And it gives the airline industry the bail out they’ll be begging for. As for the illegal aliens, if they don’t take the ticket and defy the order they will be subject to facing law enforcement and jail time followed by deportation with no chance for return. If they get on the flight they’ll be able to apply for legal re-entry at a later date.
5. $1.5trillion in reparations to US taxpayers who have had their money stolen from Congress over the past 20 years.

My partner’s just taking his mum home to the Village. Then he’ll head over St Lukes way to get rid of all the rubbish. Our bin-man doesn’t come till Wednesday and we’re heading to the beach on Monday night.

When we were cleaning up all the mess earlier, Ma was telling us she’d read that the Chinese have now introduced a law to stop food waste.
She reckons the CCP have undercover police in restaurants, ready to arrest people who order too much and leave stuff on their plates. Fine is around CNY2000 apparently.
I thort to myself shit, we’d all probably be locked up here today.

My Christmas treats included a marvellous Christmas broadcast from the Queen full of hope and optimism that is the Christmas story .

Then a splendid feel good British Comedy-drama ,, “Finding your feet ” in the traditon of The Best Exoctic Marigoild Hotel etc

Now awaiting Chrsitmas desert Pav, Fruit salad and chocolate log ( all home made)

Maybe back to usual business on KB Boxing day tomorrow.

If there is one book you must read this summer, “Apocalypse Never” is it. Let the fight back against the dystopian and deeply perverse creed of climate catastrophism begin in earnest in 2021.
