(“What is our goal?” one of the notes read. “Truth/Admission or to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired?”) Comey even told Obama and Biden that Flynn’s call was “legit”, so Biden came up with the idea of using the dubious Logan act.

      No, the FBI clearly found that he had lied to them. And when Flynn saw the evidence they had he plead guilty. Only to try to change his plea much later. And no doubt he is now waiting on a last minute pardon from Trump.
      
      The FBI were listening in to Kislyak’s phone calls, so they had a recording of what Flynn said to Kislyak. Flynn tried to lie to them about what he said but they had the recording and transcript.
      
      Your “The FBI tried to entrap him” is bullshit.
      
      Flynn is donkey deep in lots of bad activity certainly regarding Russia and Turkey and more than likely the UAE too. He is either corrupt and/or a traitor, and is certainly a criminal (on FARA if nothing else). I really don’t know why you choose this particular ditch to die in.

The voters were going to vote for Donald Trump or against Donald Trump.
Instead of voting against Donald Trump on the ballot form it said Joe Biden.
So no matter what you think there was a record vote for Donald Trump – and a record vote against Donald Trump.

September 8 the Herald advised parents “Schools told to let students choose their gender identities and names” –
Like:
• “Allow their ākonga [students] freedom of expression in relation to their gender identities and sexual orientation, including the right to determine their own identity and name.
• “Include content on the diversity of sex characteristics, sexuality, and gender identities in their curriculum programmes.”

Radio Magic Talk covered this subject yesterday afternoon with a fair number of responses damning a perceived stupidity of encouraging say, eight year olds, to question and then decide their sexuality themselves – such a decision being about as big a factor as conceivable to influence the rest of their lives.

Meanwhile the counter-covid isolation in hotel facilities of every person entering New Zealand when many actually have empty homes in which they could self isolate, seems entirely based on the assumption – that the actions of a few have proven to be possible – is that no one can be trusted to follow the medical requirements and health instructions that accompany self-isolation.

Thus, while Human Rights law states everyone is entitled to be considered not guilty of any misdemeanour until proven guilty, the current handling of isolation of New Zealanders returning from overseas, is based on the assumption those citizens are, on mass, going to be guilty of breaking covid constraints – guilty before their actions prove them so, except for a few utter fools and a couple of initial accidental situations.

A slight madness seems to exist in denying adult New Zealand citizens Human Rights to make reasonable descision in covid behaviour, but encourage eight year olds to consider factors than may entirely change the rest of their lives.

It seems a little defeatist for Government to say they have reached some limit in their isolation capacity, when the entire system is based on a denial of human rights to citizens who have in many cases accomodation of their own waiting to be used – like a neighbour who recently was accommodated for two weeks in Christchurch, while his home stood empty next door.

    “New Maths” was never designed for teaching. It was designed by general purpose illiterates who think in maths and believe the rest of the world can be naturally taught that way too. You cannot teach logical reasoning to all. Can you turn store-pickers into programmers?
    Numeracy is what is required and was once taught. For most people that is all they need. “Skip counting” as a substitute for knowing basic number facts like 7+4 is 11 is no substitute in the practical world where is is used. A mathematician would want to know what number system is in use before answering. In numbers based on 8, commonally used earlier in computing, 7+ 4 shows as 13! Primary school teachers and most others are not wired to handle much beyond basic numeracy including elementary geometry. Don’t despise the classic rote learning of number facts–“tables” can be imparted in a few weeks.

      “New Maths” is a bit of a misnomer and people should stop getting their knickers in a twist about it. I was taught That “New Maths” (well it was new back then in the 60s!) at school, and I’m a gold card carrying boomer. I can still figure sums out quite well thanks.

One thing that Winston frequently did was to call out the Maori separatists- including MPs- for their race- based rhetoric and grievance culture. And he could do so without being labelled racist because, of course, he is Maori. One of my greatest disappointments has been that neither Simon Bridges nor Paula Bennett, both of whom I admire and both with Maori ancestry, never seemed to do likewise.

I am hopeful that David Seymour, himself of Ngapuhi descent, will take the bull by the horns and tackle the downward racially divided path that this government will inevitably take us, legislating for Maori wards on City Councils and so forth. We already have people rabbiting on about how Nanaia Mahuta as Minister of Foreign Affairs will bring a distinctively indigenous perspective to her role and that her appointment is a step towards ‘decolonisation’, whatever that is. They clearly overlook Winston’s years as a Maori in the same role. It doesn’t fit with the left’s divide and conquer approach. And presumably Winston isn’t seen as a ‘proper’ Maori because he isn’t from the political extreme left.

Please, David Seymour, please step up and start to speak for all kiwis irrespective of race and stamp your mark in this race dividing debate as a Maori!

Just heard from a friend of mine who shifted last year with his extended family from Nevada to Texas. They registered and voted in Texas.

One of the family decided to check the Nevada online Registered Voter Tracker because they had heard of other fraud and they found that all five family members had been sent voting papers in Nevada by mail and that they had all voted.

They are talking to the relevant authorities but it seems that they are not the only ones who have had votes recorded in Nevada but do not live there any more. They are Republicans but believe their Nevada votes may have gone to Biden. Still checking it out.

    In the real world, Democrats are most likely to cheat. Conservatives are more likely to be evangelicals or Christians and are less likely to cheat.
    
    You only have to look at the antics of their leaders, particularly in the House. Pelosi, Nadler, Schiff, et al. They used any means at their disposal. Smearing, outright lying, fake impeachments and Russia investigations. And just look at the Clintons. And Biden himself, enriching has family in a quid pro quo with the Ukraine and China. And he hasn’t even been held to account over it.

      My siblings used to play with his children. The Holyoakes attended St Andrews on the Terrace in Wellington.
      I knew the PM’s. Peter Fraser and Walter Nash were much appreciated. More importantly was their Ministers, they were really able and many of them left lasting legacies. Successive govts could trust that previous ones had not ruined the country. Mandates were public, tested and followed.

  The current 538 aggregate is 52% disapprove/45% approve.

      I looked at a poll of polls on bbc.com from just prior to the election. They had 48 states correct; Florida blue & Georgia red. A bigger percentage for Biden overall, 8% as opposed to 3 or 4%.

Should our doctors look like us?
If you assume that all men and women of all races and culture are of equal ability, then surely it is reasonable to force institutions to produce graduates in ratios that reflect contemporary society.

From the Herald:
“Preferred minority groups now take a majority of the places in our two medical schools – but it’s still not enough to make our doctors look like us. Just 120 of the 257 places for domestic students entering medicine at the University of Auckland next year will be available for “general” students, after allocating 77 to Māori and Pacific students, 52 to regional and rural students, five to students from decile 1-3 schools, two to students with disabilities and one to a student from a refugee background.
“At the University of Otago, only 82 of the 199 places for domestic students entering this year from first-year health sciences were available to general students after giving preference to 55 Māori, 31 rural students, about 20 Pacific students, about 10 students from decile 1-3 schools and one refugee.”

I can understand the warm feelings of a self-identifying Maori being treated by a self-identifying Maori doctor. And a disabled woman might feel more comfortable being treated by a doctor in a wheelchair. But where do you draw the line? How far down do you split the identities to ensure that doctors mirror the population?
On what basis do you prioritize one attribute over another? Does gender trump religion? Does skin colour trump gender? How do you judge? Who writes the rules?

Why not simply allow the best, brighest and well-adjusted students to become doctors?
What political belief system is behind this drive for equality of outcome?

  Ability is only one part of the puzzle (even assuming that everyone is, indeed, of equal ability).
  
  The other part is whether or not they have an equal desire for the job and all that the job entails (responsibility, studying,….).
  
  Becoming a medic (or engineer etc) generally requires good academic performance. Much of that comes down to peer pressure. Cultures that ridicule peers for achievement (eg. doing well at school is acting white) are not going to turn up high success and any quota system is going to have to tilt the playing field to make the numbers right.
  
  That is blatantly unfair to the medical students AND the patients they will later serve.
  
  I’m perfectly happy with the GPs at the practice I go to: Chinese male, Korean female and NZ European female. Do I have to change to a practice with male Europeans?

    Any time anyone says “Med School is hard”, just explain to them that B grade entry students pass Med School.
    It’s no big deal.

    That would make NZ graduates less acceptable to foreign jurisdictions but still totally useful in NZ.

      When I was interviewed for a FAL back in 2011 or so I was asked whether I would use a fire arm in self defence and said that I was not getting a gun for self defence but that I would have no problems using a gun to shoot a person posing a serious threat to myself of family.

      The Mods apply DPF’s rules and are not here to have subsequent debates about someone’s hurt feelings. If a comment is deleted, you someone gets a holiday, and you don’t agree, email DPF and make the case. DPF is free to change the rules and how the moderators apply them.
      
      As for what gets deleted, most isn’t kept as it is replaced with the warning message from the Mod who is editing it. WordPress does have some stuff kept but it would obviously be up to DPF to put together a post about that as he dictates the rules of the road here.

        It was not my idea that deleted posts would be posted that came from DPF at some stage and I was just putting the idea forward again. I am quite certain seeing some of these posts would be beneficial and a mod recently stated that deleted posts, not amended, were visible so they must be in the ether somewhere.
        
        You cannot dispute the fact that criticism is delted on most occasions despite that not being a criteria for moderation and I cannot be the only one who pokes the bear.

Tony Heller, who knows a lot about computers and actually designed computer chips, says there is no such thing as a “software glitch” in voting machines. The program would be fairly simple and computers do what they are programmed to do. It has to be fraud.

  If you use the technical definition of a glitch (a momentary self correcting error state) then yes, software program glitches are impossible because software does not change like that.
  
  But often glitch is used as a term for other failures especially those that are cleared by a reboot etc. By those definitions there are plenty.
  
  As for software only doing what it is told, well, that depends… with AI/machine learning, machines effectively create their own programs.
  
  And much software has unintended behaviour (eg. they tested it by doing 10 votes and did not find a bug that only starts when it gets to 100 votes).
  
  It would be trivial to add fraudulent software that performs some nefarious task then deletes itself afterwards leaving no trail of its existence.

  Tony Heller is being intentionally deceptive? Software glitches are are very real. I’ve fixed them myself. In Heller’s example, what if the coder copied/pasted one line to save typing but forgot to update the second line ? It happens. And, that would be a glitch.
  
  Software also increases in complexity when running in parallel systems and sharing the same data .

  Collective ownership is a huge barrier to development of any sort, but so is any culture that is not based on strong law and order.
  
  Why put in the effort to make something if some other bloke with a bigger club than your can just help himself?
  
  Of course this is exacerbated by tropical “hurricane cultures” (same too for “flooding cultures” too). Not much point in building something if it is going to be blown away in the next wind. Unfortunately this impacts all Polynesian cultures – including Maori.

The Pfizer (and other similar RNA based) vaccines have a fundamental problem that they require a ridiculously low temperature during storage and transport. It also requires two doses.

“The other big question is the storage temperature, given this vaccine needs to be stored around minus 70C. This would make transportation and storage much more difficult.”

“It can only be stored at 4C for 24 hours maximum. This will pose challenges for mass vaccination campaigns.”

  If it hurts like a bugger then fewer people are likely to turn up for their second and third jabs so will be less effective. If 10% of people pull out then the effectiveness drops to about 80%.
  
  Getting an 80% effective vaccine (+ all that pain and unknown side effects) for a disease that you have a 99.9% chance of surviving anyway seems a bit dubious.

Statistics are interesting things. Pfizer say their covid jab is 90% effective. This is based on a trial of about 43,000 people of whom half got their vaccine and half got a placebo. 40 odd people got the virus ( none actually deliberately infected ) and 90% of these 40 got the placebo. Is that the same as 90% effective?Our host might have an opinion.

Actually it could be said the chances of getting the virus without the vaccine from that cohort of subjects was 0.0016744186 and the chances with the jab were 0.00018604651. One is obviously 10 times as likely as the other but both probabilities are vanishingly small. Is the difference significant?
It does seem to prove the vaccine is safe though.

  Even if we take the 90% at face value, that will depend on it being administered properly. If it is a multi-dose vaccination then the effectiveness will drop off due to people not getting all their doses on time (that compliance can be terrible especially in the third world).
  
  A test of 43k is not a proof of safety. Some issues can take many months or even years to turn up.

It would be interesting why only 38k of the 43k got their second dose. That’s in a highly motivated first world test scenario (I assume).

Compliance in 3rd world is dismal. I know a few medics (& my sister) who work in the wops in Africa and they rarely have people come back for their second jab or follow ups and – if they do- it is often delayed by a few weeks. Thus they pretty much reckon drugs and treatment regimes that need follow up are close to useless to them.

Ignoring the result of the Presidential Election – wouldn’t it be interesting to find out how much illegal/dishonest voting did occur.
Just what form it took, how many multiple voted, how many voted in more the one state, was there any stuffing of ballot boxes, etc.

Trump is no doubt the first ever President who is a businessman/property developer and knows how to make money for his country; not from his country. This stance has attracted fury from the very embedded Washington bureaucracy, whose aim in life is to featherbed their occupations through federal spending. Trump can be a rude bastard but he has the country’s welfare at heart and any hard skinned New York business person can immediately identify how he operates. Two people make online claims of illegal activities that are unsubstantiated. One makes Newshub news. Newshub article: Anonymous 4 chan poster says he has coronavirus and wants to infect people. (this fits the coronavirus fear narrative)
This never makes the news:
TikTok person videos themselves in a uniform and shows themselves tearing electoral ballots marked Donald Trump. (this is not consistent with the appropriate thinking.)
Both are unsubstantiated posts almost certainly garbage but probably worth a few questions from the police to do a double check since they are making serious illegal claims. But one seems to qualify as news and one is hushed up. Newshub truly is the gutter press.

There’s a rare (?endangered?) butterfly near where I live. Kids are catching them and releasing them into a habitat that they have created.

Yes, it shows they care etc etc, but if the habitat that they have created is good for the butterflies then they will come there on their own.

The butterflies are probably where they already are because they prefer that habitat. Catching and moving them puts undue stress on the butterflies and moves them to maybe an inferior location.

Yes, I know they have some adults in charge too, but there are numerous examples of people trying to do good and ending up doing bad.

  I just don’t think that capturing wild butterflies and moving them to new habitat for feel-goods is a good idea.
  
  One of the most glorious cockups of this type was in the Knysna forests in South Africa. They discovered a small area (less than a hectare) of some bush lillies that only grew in this one patch and nowhere else. They were shocked to see native wild pigs had rooted through the lillies. Solution: fence off these endangered plants which subsequently all died. It turned out they needed animals rooting through them as part of their lifecycle. Bummer.
