Pretty good speech, imo. Not the same insurgent energy as in 2016, but you would expect that from an incumbent.

Trump hammered the Democrat’s policies and there implications. He pointed out his successes in halving legal immigration and heavily restricting illegal entries. He advocated for a strong and respected police force, while pointedly criticising the criminal radicals, subversives, rioters and looters who have been at it for 90-odd days (I think his strategy may well be to let them do their thing as an effectively resonant and visceral anti-Democrat election campaign strategy, keeping the blame for the civil disruption largely in the hands of the Democrat governors and mayors, before clamping down with greater force in the final month or so before November 3).

Trump was as usual extremely patriotic and nationalistic, in complete and stark contrast to the anti-American Democrats, putting great stead in the historical American people and their pioneering efforts. The symbolism, pomp and pageantry (for instance the flags, the White House setting, the enthusiastic live crowd in attendance, his beautiful family on hand in support, and the impressive fireworks display – giving a middle finger to the Washington liberals who could not have avoided it) all added up to an event that absolutely eclipsed and wiped the floor with the Democrat’s recent efforts.

      The other night a 17 year old militia volunteer who went out to protect businesses and help anyone injured, was attacked. He shot 3 people attacking him, 2 of whom have died. He’s right, that if Biden wins the presidency, America as we know it is over. But with Trump America will thrive, as it has done thus far under his presidency, despite a media campaign that few people could withstand.
You don’t have to like the guy, but the USA is a better place because of him and his Republican team.

However he thinks Republican policies are reasonable while Democrat policies are heading towards being loony left (ie the opposite of the Labour Party situation in NZ – a once reasonable party but the leader wants to take it towards the loony left). How anybody could prefer to watch Biden over this is impossible to understand.

As Don says, “He’s right, that if Biden wins the presidency, America as we know it is over.” But not only America, but the whole world. Under Biden, Iran will go nuclear. With any issue, China, Iran and North Korea will thumb their noses at Biden and say “What ya gonna do about it?” And Biden will cave every time. And Russia will go anti. That twerp Bill Clinton had a perfect opportunity to make Russia a firm ally in the 1990’s, but did nothing and let Yeltsin flounder – Bill was too busy with Monica. We cannot afford Russia to be an enemy that viscerally hates us.

This is one of the most critical American elections ever, probably the most critical.
Trump may have some flaws, but he is a hell of a lot better than the alternative, which will truly be an utter disaster.
Those who want Ardern out here, yet want Trump out there suffer a serious case of cognitive dissonance.

  Of course they all use teleprompters these days, including your boy Biden, and not to mention his boss Obama. This is not too different from the paper notes they all used to use, so I don’t know what your point is supposed to be. JFK always read important speeches from notes, for instance.
  
  The teleprompter actually constrains Trump’s natural ability to take an audience along with him. Trump won in 2016 in large part, not for his teleprompter skills, but for his off-the-cuff oratory, and the affinity he has with people. He’d give 90 minute speeches on the fly and could actually engaged with his supporters. I’ve never seen anyone else in recent years do this, particularly the virtually non compos mentis hollow man Joe Biden.

What a litany of bullshit. Here is just a selection, possibly not even the most egregious.

On Covid, he said he is:

“delivering life-saving therapies and will produce a vaccine before the end of the year or maybe even sooner.”

There are no life-saving therapies. Where some treatments have been successful, Trump had no role. Convalescent plasma will not “save thousands of lives,” while no one really expects a vaccine by the end of the year.

Trump claimed the election would decide

“whether we save the American dream or whether we allow a socialist agenda to demolish our cherished destiny.”

Biden is, of course, no socialist.

Trump boasted of withdrawing from the “job-killing” Trans-Pacific Partnership (which, in fact, would have increased jobs and provided a multinational check to Chinese expansion for which he blames Biden.

He also touted his withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, the consequence of which has been the resumption of Iran’s nuclear activity.

Trump claimed to have:

“done more for the African American community than any president since Abraham Lincoln”

This ignores Truman integrating military, let alone Johnson passing the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

Trump claimed that Biden:

“has promised to abolish the production of American oil, coal, shale, and natural gas.”

Not even the most extreme Green New Deal advocates have gone this far.

  To take but one of your examples – the Civil Rights Act. Yes, it was passed by a Democrat president but only because of Republican intervention. The Democrats filibustered the Civil Rights bill (as it was then) for 57 days, and it took Republican Senator Everett Dirksen to go around and get votes – cajoling, cashing in on past favours, etc etc to get it through and break the filibuster. Even Time magazine acknowledged the passing of the bill was due to him, featuring him on the cover in July, 1964, and saying, “it is Dirksen’s bill, bearing his handiwork more than anyone else’s.”

  It’s pretty much a meaningless indicator. If you look at the composition they switch out the badly performing companies like Exxon (Going from $70 to $40 since March). Companies like Apple are overweight in the index and their gains have allowed the index to appear at the same level. The Current index is not the same one you are referring to in March and so it has limited value as a tool of comparison. Obviously many here are going to deny this but that’s just indicative of an inability to confront economic reality.
  
  This is why Trump refers to the share market all the time as a metric for the economies health. It isn’t for those who don’t know better. It’s just a metric to be gamed which doesn’t reflect reality. Have a look at the retailers who are filing for bankruptcy to see how consumer sentiment really is doing.

      That’s not the point you were making. You were using the index as a broad based indication of the health of the US economy. Now you’re shifting it to some Star Trek ‘tech is the future’ argument.
      
      My contention was that an indices which is overweight in tech stock that have been subject abnormal market gains is not indicative of the overall health of the economy because FANGS do not employ the majority of Americans. These companies and their revenues are global so their share prices is not solely predicated on the US economy. It’s a complex issue and it appears you don’t fully grasp it although not many people really do.

So petty minded people are complaining that he gave his acceptance speech from the White House (ie using Government property for political purposes). Some common sense is needed especially in difficult times. He would have preferred to give his speech at the main convention venue as is normal, but this convention is spread all over the place because of Covid.

The clearest difference between Trump’s speech and Biden’s is that Biden spoke in platitudes, while Trump spoke with specifics. Biden couldn’t point any numbers or quotes (besides the “very fine people” lie), he was just saying he will solve everything. How? Doesn’t matter. Meanwhile Trump was pulling all the numbers, all the Biden quotes.

    Hotels are split into two main operating units. The first is entity which actually owns the physical building and the second is the entity which operates and owns the brand. Trump is in the business of licensing his name to apartment and hotel business as a branding exercise. This enables him to appear to be more successful than he really is while not taking the risk and leaving his silent partners to competently complete projects so it’s a win-win. Given his track record of bankruptcy and stiffing his creditors maybe it for the best.

If Trump has been elected in WW2 then he would have done a deal with Nazi Germany and we would still be contending with an Fascist occupied Europe. An accurate summation of the Democrat Party’s deeper problems:

tied to a past, that is, of which Democrats themselves are ashamed. NAFTA, signed under Bill Clinton, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, championed by Biden within the Obama administration, are not things that Biden or his party want to celebrate today. Nor is the Iraq War for which Biden voted. Nor is the crime bill that Biden sponsored in 1994. Even Barack Obama’s policy achievements — the Affordable Care Act and the Iran Deal — are not sources of much enthusiasm among Democrats these days. The Iran Deal hardly merits mention, and Obamacare is now an old warhorse. The Democrats are fresh out of ideas, and even the recent ideas, like Obamacare, that they do defend are not thought by anyone to be bold solutions to the 2020s’ challenges.

  US GDP per person is 6x higher than Mexico. Given the disparate economies I have no problem with, and support NAFTA, even though Mexico might have gained more jobs than the US. US GDP per person is 6x higher than Mexico’s. In the long run, things that are done to improve Mexico’s standing will benefit the US. It shouldn’t be all about the US “winning”. This is a short term populist political strategy. both Dems and Republicans (and National and Labour) should do better at helping those that are displaced by trade deals, and those that benefit from trade deals should understand and recognize this.
