I unwisely followed a Stuff link on my iPhone this morning, and was greeted with the following self-aggrandizing pleading for my trust, and for my money:

we’re for facts
not followers
Unlike on social media platforms, when you support Stuff you’re backing journalists that chase the truth, shine a light on injustice and hold the powerful to account.

Such a short paragraph, but packed to the rafters with lies that are laid bare in their writing, day after day after day.

Stuff doesn’t ‘chase truth’, but rather de-platforms evidence based positions that fail to support their dogma.

Their ‘journalists’ are mostly poorly skilled, woefully woke keyboard warriors who applaud anything or anyone with even the faintest cultural Marxist hue, while blindly attacking anything even remotely to the right.

I would gnaw my own arm off before choosing to subscribe to their propaganda rag. The sooner they collapse under the weight of their hubris-generated debt, the better.

  1 thing I have noticed is with cindy and judith photos they usually show judith with a big grin and happy whereas 90% of cindy pics are unflattering and show a face like a slapped arse.

    Interesting observation. I’ve most stayed away from their squalid scribbling so haven’t seen the pics, but I hope you’re right. Having Ardern’s PR team giving instruction on daily Zoom calls must get a bit tiring.

      Sure, lets make up anything – did you know that all articles, even entertainment section articles like”The best James Bond ever – poll”, have to be approved by Ardern herself before publication. No wonder nothing gets done if she’s reading, editing and running multiple newspapers, magazines, websites, radio stations and broadcasters.

    The photo IS the story, so it surprises me that you make the observation about the contrast vis Judith and the other one. Trump photos are usually wholly unflattering, for instance. You don’t even need to read the text, because the text always matches the image. We are visual creatures first and foremost.
    
    I have stopped visiting any of those sights, including Stuff, the Herald and my local cheer leading rag. I actually feel less stressed for having done so (not that I was very stressed, but it has reduced). I became utterly sick of the virus lies and the incessant hero-cum-deity worship.
    
    Journalism is an activity, it is not an identity. Why Stuff et al are held up as being the only reliable sources is counter to my experience. They are financially under the control of the powers that be, so cannot be trusted to be objective, and they largely aren’t, save for people who can never even appreciate, let alone escape from, their state of deception. There are tonnes of excellent “non-MSM” sources (and granted, some sketchy ones).

        If you’re attempting to be the guy who officiously corrects people’s comments, then you should first ensure that your correction is in fact correct:
        
        “I think you mean to say:
        
        “They are adding a misleading summary of the story which is riddled with spelling and grammar errors.””
        
        “Mean” should be substituted for the past-tense “meant.”
        
        “…riddled with spelling and grammar errors” should say “grammatical errors,” not grammar errors.
        
        Happily, you are correct about one thing: you don’t have much to work with in the first place.
        
        (And yes, I am well aware that ‘Ghandi’ is not the same as ‘Gandhi’).

      @ plc: Perhaps younger scientists have to “embrace” Stone Age animism these days if they don’t want their careers ended by accusations of “racism” and “failure to observe Treaty Principles”? And of course applications for research funding now have to be vetted by Iwi to ensure projects are appropriate to manu whenua values. New Zealand is in fact leading the world in rejecting the fruits of the Enlightenment and returning the primordial mire of superstition and fear from which the West painfully emerged many centuries ago.         I came across these the other day and never seen them before, but had heard them referred to often enough.
        1] The Treaty set up a partnership and the partners have a duty to act reasonably and in good faith.
        2] The Crown has freedom to govern.
        3] The Crown has a duty to actively protect Maori interests.
        4] The Crown has a duty to remedy past breaches.
        5] Maori retain rangatiratanga over their resources and taonga and have all the rights and privileges of citizenship.
        6] The Crown has a duty to consult with Maori.
        7] The needs of both Maori and the wider community must be met, which will require compromise.
        8] The Crown cannot avoid its obligations under the Treaty by conferring authority on some other body.
        9] The Treaty can be adapted to meet new circumstances.
        10] Tino rangatiratanga includes management of resources and other taonga according to Maori culture.

      Chi is a cultural thing but it does not pervade the way of living. And there is no way that Chinese scientists pay any attention to it.
      
      It is just horrific that this is happening in New Zealand. Apparantly stats nz want to incorporate Maori ‘science’ into statistics.
      
      I am only hoping that at the coal face, scientists are paying lip service to this rubbish and then just getting on with it.
      
      I would take a guess that there is not a single person in the Labour and Green MPs that have degrees in physics, chemistry, biology, genetics, or mathematics. And it shows. I wonder if Judith has read any of this dangerous rubbish?

    I will be a contrarian here, and say that ‘Mauri,’ or any other name that it may go by, may not be recognised as an entity by the scientific method, but that doesn’t mean that it does not form part of the make-up of the universe. 100 or 200 years ago, some of the now-accepted metaphysical aspects of the known universe would have been considered bonkers. But “known” is the key word in that assertion.
    
    There are of course great epistemological issues with these conjectured entities/forces, and so I, nor anybody else, cannot say for certain, and so no, it should not factor into the teachings that are derived from the presently accepted body of information known to the methods of science. But I will say that science is never a complete body of knowledge, largely because it is fundamentally an activity that is necessarily restricted by our own human limitations.
    
    This notion is akin to the Kantian doctrine of distinguishing ‘phenomena’ from ‘noumena.’ We can only know the representations derived from raw sense-data (which are first synthesised and mediated by our faculty of understanding) that finally come to us as phenomena. But our empirical knowledge of this sort is necessarily restricted due to the limitations imposed by our cognitive apparartus. Therefore, what falls outside our capacity to know and understand (i.e. ‘noumena’ – free will, infinity, the idea of God etc.) can only be inferred, never known. Maybe we can “know it all” on death, freed from our cognitive restrictions, but that is pure speculation of course.
    
    I think that, if we are honest, we all have an amorphous, ineffable inkling that there is something beyond what we can show to be “the case.” On that note, may the force be with you all!

      In any paper or grant review, if a reviewer wants to be particularly nasty they make the comment “This reads more like phenomenology than hypothesis-based research”. A friend had it written on a grant review, she’s never going to forget (or forgive) that review.

      Venezuelan oil is nasty stuff: heavy, sour oils that nobody wants when the market is flush with sweet light oils. Nobody wants to process filthy Venezuelan oil in their refineries when there’s easy-to-refine oil available.
      
      That’s why Venezuela needed a whole oil processing industry. Just pumping and selling crude is not enough to make money. But the industry fell apart as soon as the government chased away competent people.
      
      Net result: their oil industry ground to a halt.

      Venezuela still has the biggest oil reserves in the world, overtaking Saudi Arabia a few years ago, with more than 300 billion barrels or proven oil reserves.
      
      They should be absolutely rolling in cash, and be the envy of the developed world, like Norway and Sweden have managed.
      
      Too bad about the corruption, inefficiency, looting the banks and that other thing, what was it again? Oh yes, socialism.

  To rebut Komata (who is dangerously close to indulging in anti Semitic tropes) the borrowing is essentially done by the NZ government issuing NZ dollar denominated bonds. These are purchased by all the usual trading banks, super funds and other institutional funds, mostly in New Zealand but also overseas. And in a few instances, by individuals.
  
  In addition the Reserve Bank has talked about qualitative easing, though I am not sure they have done it yet. In that case the RBNZ increases the money supply (“prints money”) and buys NZ government bonds. The government then has money to spend on things such as covid wage subsidies. Basically Social Credit!
  
  Some of us spent much time in our early political years arguing against Social Creditors, only to find that QE is effectively Social Credit in action. In theory QE should boost inflation, but if there is substantial unused capacity in the economy, then QE allows that unused capacity to filled. Therefore QE does not boost inflation but instead boosts production (or in a covid recession, sustains production). At least that is the QE theory as I understand it.

Eg Members of fundamentalist religions in western countries can always leave if they are psychologically ill suited to the lifestyle and strictures. So after a few generations the ones left have genetics that are more likely to generate psychology that will keep people in the faith.

    I suspect that exactly the same thing happened with the Covid testing. The Department, and our great leader, assured us that were vast supplies of PPE, and that testing was readily available to anyone who needed it.
    Meanwhile nobody could get testing and Health Centres couldn’t even get masks.

    The COL must be removed, that is the best policy.
    
    The winter energy payment should remain regardless of who is in Government. I am sure that the savings in public health expenditure resulting from keeping people warm would be well recouped. For the first time in years I have kept both lights and heating on and have not had a days illness or any seasonal affective disorder. I have been able to work constantly.

  The other interesting observation, and one I’d not considered, is Ardern pursuing an unscientific ‘elimination’ strategy by isolating NZers is guaranteed to reduce our immunity to new seasonal cold/flu virus strains.

When Medical Association Chair Dr Kate Baddock told the Epidemic Response Committee in April that GP’s were having great difficulty getting adequate supplies of flu vaccine, she was pretty much shouted down by the Left. So were those who defended her.

    As long as we’re going to relate our experiences obtaining a flu vaccine. I went along to the Three Kings Clinic and said gimme a flu shot a got one straightaway back about April/May.
    My wife, who is under 65, had to wait until her age group became eligible, but again there was not wait due to any shortage.
    More annoying were the protocols in place at the door to get in and waiting in the car instead of the waiting room.
    Nobody said come back next week, we’re out of stock.

  My wife is house bound with Chronic heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
  If I get the flu and give it to her……
  But there were no flu vaccines available for 3 more weeks when I tried to get her to the Dr. for hers.

  While putting together breakfast this morning I heard Kerre on the radio discussing the flu vaccine shortages with a chemist who worked through the lock-down concerning the lies about availability of many medical supplies . For the flu jab we had an appointment with our GP prior to lock-down and were advised ‘they had run out’ even then. After lock-down we approached the GP who said they had reached their supply quota! My wife who is a nurse of some 45 years including in a GP for 12 years said she had never heard of such a thing? We were referred to our (or a) chemist who the MOH said had plenty. The chemist was also out of stock, no more coming, she even ran upstairs to another GP who were also out. We are yet to have our flu jab, looks like we won’t. At least we are not travelling as despite having the jab we still managed to pick up some sort of upper respiratory infection in Europe last two years, likely a Covid.

There is a simple way to freely read an article behind the NZH paywall. However, you need to have a full keyboard attached to your computing device, as I don’t know of any way to type Ctrl-U on a cellphone. If you have never seen the back end of a web page before, you will be confronted by a somewhat confusing mess of type, but with a bit of practice it’s not hard to ignore the html code. The actual article text usually starts about two-thirds of the way down the page. This trick works for a large number of paywall web sites, though some (such as the Wall Street Journal) have put in a block.

    I used to live across the road from a dairy & became quite friendly with the owner.
    He told me the newspapers were a service from which he made only a small profit that evaporated if only a couple of papers were stolen.

A useful example of stupid journalist. Very sad dog died. But narrative is that these guys were in danger of drowning and freezing because they “were not wearing life jackets” and were irresponsible.

Look at the photo. They are wearing wet suits. They are close to shore and calmly hanging on to the boat. They could have stayed like that for a long time. They were in no danger.

Jacinda Ardern says cost won’t be a determining factor in keeping the gunman in New Zealand, rather it will be up to the desire of the victims.

A situation, which has not been confirmed, is whether in fact Ashley Bloomfield threatened his resignation unless Ardern gave up her determination to hold a March 15 mass commemoration to the Christchurch mosques shootings. But while that did or did not happen, numbers of those in the Islamic community said they did not welcome such a commemoration and some said they would not attend.
They would rather “move on”. So would they have one united view on Tarrant’s destination?

How will Ardern evaluate opinion in this matter, and who would be consulted is such an issue which, far as I understand it, has never happen before.

There is also the matter of Tarrant himself, who may believe Turkish agents could kill him as has been intimated by their President, so is he entitled under NZ law and UN entitlements to actually seek asylum here.
As weird as that may seem, it could be legally more plausible than what Ardern suggests – that any change of country to serve a jail sentence, “will be up to the desire of the victims”.
That may be about as legal as her calling the halt to Fletcher’s construction at Ihumātao.

I was so gutted to learn that our co-saviour St Ashley of the Blooming Fields lied to us about the availability of flu vaccines.

Now I’m going to have to get that tattoo of him removed from my calf, which will be damnably painful, and what’s more I’ll have to find another rugby team to support.

12,000 crew members still stuck on Cruise ships in US waters after Covi-19 shut cruising down.
By late March, the Celebrity Solstice, had disembarked all passengers.
Crew, remained on board until transferred to Royal Carribean’s Voyager of the Seas, where they have remained since May.
Companies are talking up getting back to sea with suggested heavy booking as a result of incentives.
Who knows? Your guess?

I really appreciate the time labour take to decide where to put there signs, two of note I’ve seen is three signs right beside a graveyard here. Another three right beside a sign that Says “horse pooh! $3 a bag’.

I always find it somewhat reassuring that reality will trump (No Pun Intended) all of the bien-pensants’ posturing and opinionating.

I have frequently found that in my medical practice, when people are up against it and facing immortality, they quite abruptly discard all of their preconceptions, prejudices and the policies by which they conduct themselves while interacting with everybody else – because, suddenly, they cannot evade reality.

As someone famous once said, “reality is the thing that when you ignore it, does not go away.” The reality is that if enough New Zealanders vote for Ardern, I’ll cope with it. If the reality is that more than 50% of New Zealanders decide she has been a lying Commie charlatienne, that will please me because of the result, but it won’t change my Weltanschau.

Let us all, variously, wish ourselves luck.

But Lady Luck is a a Notoriously Fickle Bitch.

Story sounds fishy. So homeless man did in fact stay in an isolation hotel, but homeless man apparently flew into the country and stayed their legitimately. Great to know homeless people are able to travel internationally, I’m sure most homeless people would be surprised by that. How about, homeless man stayed at hotel, government tell porkies to try and cover their butts?

The review turned up just one person of interest: an individual with no fixed abode who was previously known to hotel staff because he frequented the Crowne Plaza.

“He would often come into the hotel to exchange coins for money or to use the bathroom facilities,” the hotel said in a statement.
