Another week of coronavirus panic. Another week’s excuse to skive off and wreck the economy so Cindy and Robbo can ‘save’ us.

I have come to accept that a significant portion of the population of the West are quite content to stay isolated or at home for the rest of their f&^%ing lives!!!

  Yes. I asked a colleague yesterday how long she was willing to stay locked up. She said ‘years if necessary’. I asked her if she had children, grandchildren, friends, family, or business in any other country. And of course the answer was “no”

    I would suggest nobody is stopping most people leaving the country. The problem is finding a way to get out & that isn’t going to be solved by anything our government does.

    Apart from mum and dad etc who may want to go on holiday especially after winter/xmas, this will have a major impact on companies who rely on overseas travel for business and a flow on effect to those in corporate travel agencies.

  This was telling when we came out of level 4 and 3. There were so many that were quite happy to stay longer at those levels. Obviously most were either public servants or employees, none would have been business owners.
  
  I’m afraid that an understanding of economics is very low amongst most of the population. Who the @#$& was paying for them to stay at home doing nothing?

    She is an opportunistic shock jock, but she doesn’t have any alligience to Labour. She would just as happily attack Labour as National. National just happen to be giving her more to work with at the moment (leadership coups, blunders, Boag, Walker, Falloon, and low polls).
    
    Also, being that Labour are more popular right now, they are a more difficult target. John Key had an easy ride through the media for years while Labour was constantly trashed.
    
    Tova is out for Tova. If she thinks she can earn a meal off attacking Labour she certainly takes it.

There is an unsurprising amount of pessimism among what appears to be longstanding National supporters about the outcome of the election. It is hard to avoid the reality of the polls and the continuing unhealthy bias in the media toward Ardern and Labour.

However, there is a strong case for believing that the actual election campaign could change the numbers quite quickly.

1. It is only a few short months ago that National were polling in the mid to high 40’s.
2. Despite multiple small trips there was no major reason for their loss of support that was of their own making.
3. The heavy lifting in any Cabinet is done by an inner circle of 5 or 6 big hitters and person for person National is streets better. But can they get enough exposure?
4. It is going to dawn on a growing number of voters that it takes more than a daily stand up repeating the numbers to get the country through the next 3 years. Labour, helped by the media will keep exploiting Ardern’s performance during lockdown as the nation’s main asset but such a backward focus leaves National room to look back to the first 2 years of failure and underperformance when there was governing to do.
5. Campaigns tend to be presidential and focus on leaders only – National cannot win such a campaign in the time left but they can win on a team versus team, governing record versus governing record campaign. It will depend on how clever National is at dictating the themes.
6. The gap in the polls is not as big as it appears. As few as 5 – 6% of voters who moved to Labour are hardly committed. They are in the ‘easy go, easy come’ category. They will determine the election.
7. National have to keep wooing the centre. Act is covering their right flank thanks to Seymour’s improving performance. Collins must prove to centre NZ she is the better equipped team leader.
8. The Greens at 4.9% would be ideal but I suspect they will just creep home based on votes from offshore.
9. The real economy is heavily masked by subsidies to wage earners and businesses and will be till the end of the year. The cash is sloshing around giving an appearance of “we are OK” but underneath it is a nightmare of debt and slowing business. Can National get that message out?
10. The more experienced and wiser Collins can expose a shallow and poorly equipped Ardern – there is still time but it will be close.

  The real economy might be masked at a macro level, but there will be plenty of households knowing their jobs are at high risk, and soon. Those households have children, mortgages or rent to pay, HP, overdrafts – expenses based on their previous income and lifestyle. The jobseeker benefit is not going to touch the sides.

    What I find maddening is the number of staunch Nat supporters wandering around saying “We won’t win” For goodness sake! Stop drinking the completely biased medias Kool Aid and start spouting “We are going to win” instead. Negativity begets negativity. It was the same with the naysayers over Bridges who, by the way, I supported. Labour were out to get him from the start and too many Nats took Labour’s side. I am a fan of Judith, though, and I am barracking for her loud and clear.

  I don’t agree with your prediction re the Greens.
  
  Historically, the Greens always get a share of the vote that is 1.5 to 2% lower that where they poll in the Colmar Brunton poll. The Overseas vote wont get them over the line. It’s also because we have never has a Labour Party that courts the left ‘progressive’ of woke vote like this one. This pulls support from the greens like crazy, and pushes the Centre vote to the right.
  
  Expect a swing to the right to occur as the campaign gets into motion. We have already seen a bit of this with Judith agreeing with Labour that returning kiwi’s need to pay for their quarantine (In the same way that any kiwi would have to pay their own way when they come home!).
  
  This nudged Labour into putting in place a policy that aligned more with the ‘progressive’ faction. This is estimated to cost $500,000,000. If past performance is anything to go by, it will be way more than that, and this figure is only until the end of the year!
  
  I have heard from a number of left leaning friends, that they do not like this one bit. John Q Taxpayer is not the Governments ATM, and they do not like it!

  I suspect that more than a few of the Green offshore voters will be amongst the NZers that have come home in the last few months. ie younger people on their OE rather than settled people with careers offshore.
  So I wonder if the Green offshore advantage will apply this time.

    Personally, I think there should be a residency requirement for voting, eg you must have been resident in New Zealand for at least 6 months in the last 3 years.

      I skyped the o/s daughter last night.
      She reckons all the o/s kiwi folk she’s in contact with are pretty upset with the $3100 charge for kiwis returning to NZ. They’re no longer viewing Ardern & the CoL through rose-tinted glasses .
      
      Countries like S.Korea allow returning nationals to self-isolate at their home if they prove covid-19 negative at the airport. Seems NZ could run a similar programme here if they instigated decent temperature checks and rapid Covid-19 testing at Arrival gates.

      According to the Electoral Commission you can vote from overseas if you are enrolled to vote and:
      
      . are a NZ citizen who has visited NZ in the last 3
      years, or
      . are a permanent resident of NZ who has visited
      NZ in the last 12 months.
      If neither applies you are no longer eligible to enrol to vote.

      And the potential for a party to get 7 seats with 0.5% vote (Maori seats). Or a party with 3% can have four seats compared to zero for 4.7% party vote.
      Epsom /Ohariu deals can happen at the drop of a hat at any election.
      Its just not that democratic as a system and not to mention the ludicrous power a 5% party can hold over the nation

        Yes and at core of the problem is that we can and did end up with an unelected government and prime minister. That said, all the bitching by us won’t change how the country is governed or how taxpayer’s hard earned money is spent/wasted.
        I don’t believe the current CoL give a big rat’s arse how much the country is in debt and to whom when they are finally ejected from the treasury benches.
        Now we have seen and suffered the worst aspects of MMP in practice, why can’t we have a referendum on moving to a more NZ relevant electoral system?

      There will no doubt be reasons why there will be no leader’s debates. Then again, Cindy may appoint her deputy PM to represent her in the leader’s debates. Wouldn’t that be a hoot.   Here is hoping that the Greens miss out altogether.
  
  Normally they underperform polling even accounting for overseas votes. And it might be that their overseas support switches to Labour given the unrelenting positive exposure overseas media is giving Labour for the Covid success. Also, on the news the other day, the percentage of young voters actually registered was very low compared to last time. That is key support for the Greens, but they might not turn up to vote.
  
  If the Greens scrape back in then I think it will be a bridge too far for National. But if the Greens miss out, then the combined National/Act vote only need a swing of 8% to close the gap.
  
  That is certainly not outside the realms of possibility.

  Every single time the PM speaks at the moment she reiterates that her govt saved us from the Black Death and we should all be grateful. That is their election strategy- fear and gratitude for spraying round huge amounts of borrowed money to pretend we have a functioning economy. This will be a good election to lose as the next three years are going to be economically painful and at some stage we are likely to get COVID back. NZ can’t stay locked away from the world forever, and can’t see people accepting a hard lockdown again.

    You would be surprised. I am meeting people who say we should close the borders until the virus is erradicated globally. I say that will never happen and I get the death stare. This person was a public servant in Wellington, but still….
    
    I watched an interesting video yesterday of a New Zealand epidemiologist in the UK. He is adamant that the virus will become endemic. He was saying that the virus will keep mutating and the best case scenario is a vaccine that needs to be modified each year and will be partially effective.
    
    He also doubts that contracting the virus gives you lifetime immunity. Just like getting a cold dies not stop you catching another cold next month or next year. Whereas other viruses are stable. For example I had hepatitis when I was 8. That means I have hepatitis antibodies and I cannot get hepatitis again.

  I think it’s going to be a short campaign. People are still focused on covid, and there’s nothing much happening with the election yet. Winston’s jumping up and down, but that’s what he always does so is largely ignored by the public, and Labour isn’t saying ANYTHING.
  
  I think Jacinda did a great job (certainly far better than I expected) standing up every day reassuring people. I look beyond the superficial, but for people who don’t follow politics, the superficial is what they see, and what they remember right now.
  
  Once the leaders’ debates start, people will start taking more notice and start looking forward instead of backwards, and that’s when things might change.
  
  I think it’s going to be much much closer than the current polls.

      I was astounded that yesterday she was named as the world’s most eloquent leader.
      
      Read a transcript of any interview she does under any kind of close questioning. eg Mike Hosking. She is utterly incomprehensible. She is not across important topics. Her approaches are 1. Change the subject and wave arms about. 2. Tilt head and make things up. 3. Get annoyed and say “I refute that”
      
      She is not eloquent. She’s the total opposite of that.

    Ardern can be a reassuring presence when the shit hit the fan, as we have seen in the Mosque Attacks and Covid 19.
    
    But the media do not look at what happens after. She has not yet been subjected to the proper scrutiny.
    
    The Kneejerk reactions to the Mosque Shootings, and the subsequent banning of firearms has not been challenged in any meaningful way by the media, even after a report found that the only reason the Gunman had the weapons was due to the FAILURE of authorities in properly implement existing regulations. If the police had carried out the proper checks, the Gunman would not have been able to carry out the attacks.

    some of NZs best weed is grown by retirees trying to survive. also not to mention the maori areas in central NI and the far north whose entire existence and lifestyle is funded by growing.

    I don’t know – anyone who wants to can get ready access to cannabis. If they were voting for cheap cannabis, maybe, but it is not clear that it will be cheaper if it is legal. She recently completed a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. She has owned 3 successful businesses, 2 restaurants and a law firm which she later sold for a profit. She has been an MP for 18 years. Jacinda has no work experience to speak of, couldn’t win an electorate so was gifted one, and only has a Communications degree which merely means she can bullshit effectively and you have the cheek to say Judith has no experience.

        BJ have a look at how well other island countries around the world have done Sri Lanka, Jamaica, Barbados etc. Given NZ’s geogaphical location and largely compliant public it would have been quite hard to screw up.
        Even comrade Ardern let thousands of International flights through with minimal checks when she was going ‘hard and early’ and we still somehow didnt get significant community transmission.
        She let cruise ships passengers walk through our major cities that ended up causing a lot of deaths in Sydney but somehow many still buy the brainwashing ‘hard and early’ twaddle rammed down our throats on the daily electioneering campaigns at 1pm for over a month.
        It would have been extremely hard to screw this up. I would have had better border checks in March and locked up earlier and not let cruise ships in. I said so at the time so its not hindsight. I also removed my kids from school before comrade Ardern closed them.

Because they have been buying time, by providing clever half truths and deflection (e.g. South Korean first test was not PCR so false +ve, infection at singapore airport etc). They have not been open and truthful.

@Tomtoddy. I believe the situation is very volatile. National have been damaged by a number of unfortunate events in the past month. They must put those well behind them and focus on recovering lost ground. There is a very large number of undecideds, and voters in the centre can be fickle. Collins and her team must present as an alternative credible government. The bias of the media has hit new lows. National will have to try and circumvent them by greater use of social media and pressing the flesh. There must be no holding back.

I have a friend waiting out govt 14 day isolation after returning from aussie earlier this week.

He thought from media reports it was going to be very strict but 4 days in he said its been a total joke.
within 6Hrs of arriving he was mingling in the courtyard havn a ciggie and yarn with an 11th day detainee and a guard, the 3rd day on ciggie break there were 2 randoms sharing a ciggie and little to no distancing occuring amongst anyone and the guards dont challenge anything.

hes questioning why the media havnt put a drone over to see the mockery of it in the outdoor areas, just fly the smokers area and see NZs greatest joke…

    My partner reckoned the first one that owned our dairy was as cunning as a sh*t house rat. When he called in on the way home to get the milk, he used to watch him scanning the goods for some old duck, but ‘accidentally on purpose’ forget to clear the previous balance!

Plague update: Victoria is in crisis and world is literally going to end!

Latest figures from the People’s Democratic Republic of Victoria indicate that 113 ~~mainly elderly~~ people have now died of the plague.

This is 0.0017% of Victoria’s population and as such it clearly is a catastrophic situation. To put it another way, NEARLY TWO people per HUNDRED THOUSAND of population have died of with this horrific disease.

What are the poor Victorians going to do? Obviously confining everybody in certain postal codes to their homes isn’t working and destroying their economy and social cohesion hasn’t been enough. Maybe China could be asked to help out somehow? I mean, they’re pretty experienced at this sort of thing with their camps, their 24/7 surveillance and mass thought control – so that might be the answer?

Anyway, let’s all join hands and thank our own glorious leader for saving us from this diabolic pestilence. Our death rate has been a somewhat more manageable 0.0005% of our population, but this is still a lot, so we would be very wise to keep vigilant and prepare to go into immediate lockdown as soon as the next ‘spike’ in ‘infections’ happens just before the election.

Temperatures were being taken at Auckland Airport, those high were tested. But as soon as the media cameras and reporters left, Airport Staff went back to handing out leaflets. My neighbour works for Air NZ. She said the rubbish bins were full of leaflets.

That sniffle of a cold you’ve got that you ignore – that’s Covid.
That dry hacking cough you’ve got that you’re taking throaties for – that’s Covid.
That slight shortness of breath you’ve got every time you do your 30min. run that you ignore – that’s covid.
Those symptoms that you’ve got that you can’t notice – that’s Covid.
The point is, Wuhan ‘Flu is probably everywhere already – just not noticeable in most cases. So forget lockdowns, masks and social distancing – its all bullshit propaganda and fear-mongering.
Live life as you wish, and as you are supposed to do. Its a great life if you ignore the control freaks.

      The only thing simpler for me is to head up to Antoine’s in Parnell for dinner. We had an abfab meal there last night. My partner had the classic Oxtail for his main, and i chose 3 plates from the Starters. Shared the chocky trio for dessert. All up with champoo, 550 + tip.

This was reinforced by the venom with which Chris Hipkins attacked the actions of Boag and Walker. Apart from mentioning it, the media have also failed to look into the failings that the List exposed in depth.
In the year ending October, 2018, a total of 3,000,000 New Zealanders visited or holidayed overseas. That is 250,000 per month. How long are the public going to be satisfied with local tourism ventures? Will local tourism allow the operators to continue in business long enough for overseas tourists to fill the void?
If 250,000 people, per month, holidayed overseas at present we would need 115,000 isolation rooms.
Is this the reason the imposition of a cost is being promoted? Is it hoped that the potential cost will prevent any problem occurring?

  Hipkins stayed well clear of Woods calling Walker a racist, which was also included in the report as the reason Walker reacted. Walker was wrong, but the ‘dirty politics’ started with Woods trying to deflect attention form her under-hand attempt to initiate quarantine facilities in Queenstown and Invercargill. Walker was doing what any ‘elected’ constituent MP should have done to represent his electorate.

  Most people I know are quite resigned to not travelling overseas till 2022. A few months ago they were thinking mid 2021, but now most are thinking 2022. They seem quite OK with that prospect, though they would like the option of a Pacific Islands break.
  
  Having said that, two people I know well (both NZ born) have gone overseas in the last month, one to Spain, one to France. Both expect to return in about three to four months. The prospect 0f 14 days quarantine was not a deterrent.

  Did you read Martin van Beynen’s article on Stuff today? We are starting to read some astonishing attacks on the National Party. That article would have been in the Press and I would suggest that right leaning Cantabrian’s should end their subscriptions and no longer buy that newspaper. In another article Audrey Young named prominent Christians in the National Party and the essence of the article seemed to be a concern that Christians could get into Government. Yachties stuck in the islands not allowed to enter New Zealand and cyclone season is coming soon.

It takes most yachts several weeks to sail to New Zealand from Fiji, Tonga, etc. This would be a reasonable period of self-isolation.

I’m not entirely positive about Maritime law but I thought that it was illegal to deny a yacht entry.

Went to the Doc on Tuesday – nagging cough for 10 days, body aches, joint pains – you know, the man flu. It’s a virus, go to bed and stay there. While you are here we will do a Covid test. I had one 8 weeks ago. Never mind he said, just another to be safe.
It came back negative, same as the last one.
My question is, ‘Can I trust the lab result, seeing as we all know the Govt is lying through their teeth?’

So far the media have been very good at making everyone think that Covid-19 is equally dangerous for everybody.
The reality is that the isolation approach is only necessary for the protection of the 65+ part of the population. Otherwise there would still be open borders, tourism and people behaving normally.
Airlines would be traversing the skies, ocean liners would still be calling (less frequently as a large part of their users wouldn’t be on board) and the Election would be about PERFORMANCE and POLICY.
