Welcome to Level One!

The suggestion however, repeated by Katie Bradford on 1 News last night, that the economy is 95% back is a long way from the truth. Tourism, our leading source of export earnings, is in tatters. The Overseas Student sector, another significant source of revenue, is on hold for goodness knows how long. Tens of thousands of people are newly out of work, and that number will rise when the wage subsidy ends. Hundreds of businesses have closed, and will never reopen. People have taken their own lives because the enormity of the situation was too much for them.

Let’s all hope and pray that there is not a “second wave” of Covid-19, or some mutated form of the virus. Further restrictions on activity would be catastrophic, not only to our collective health, but to the economy as well.

        She is a preacher to the sychophants and certainly not the wondrous communicator she proclaims. A good leader/communicator appreciates the whole team and carries them all to a greater or lesser degree. Doesn’t need to flap and frown and tilt and carry on etc etc. Imagine eg how a mother of a teething little one whose husband has lost his job or whose café had gone under felt about the slg’s dribble about her needing to tell the world about her little dance for Neve. She needs to get out and about and stop talking in her echo chamber.

  In addition, businesses have finally discovered that they don’t need all their staff in an office 5 days a week. Many are going to continue to work from home to varying degrees. CBD districts are like ghost towns so all the associated businesses continue to suffer.

    She needs to visit Nelson, our tourism is dead, the wine industry and apple industry are struggling to get workers from overseas. Yesterday I went to my usual safety equipment place to get an inflatable fixed. They service all the life rafts and safety gear for the fishing fleet and refits as well as aircraft at Nelson airfield. Just the manager and a young girl left, all th3 rest made redundant and they were just stock checking before closing at the end of the month. Their operation,moved to Christchurch. Don’t even thing we are at peak pain!

      While the media report on the big company job losses , Warehouse AirNZ etc , the real experience of real people across the whole country goes largely unremarked .
      
      And the crash will hurt everyone, in some ways huge in other ways not so much , but this thing is a disaster.
      
      But as far as the “news” reports are concerned it’s all smiles and happy dancing……

      So, the PM is angry at The Warehouse redundancies, and states that if it is a business restructure, then they should say that and not use covid 19 as an excuse.

      Maybe the PM could ask The Warehouse, how did the increase in minimum wage help their business, and the fact they were forced closed for a month under Level 4.
      The fact The Warehouse was already looking to rationalize their business prior to Covid, as were where many large businesses in NZ is the bigger story, as it indicates NZ was heading for economic troubles prior to Covid, and this latest saga has accelerated that economic decline and the government has shown no plan on how they intend to deal with it.

  Which correlates with what I and others have been saying for a long time. That is unless you have a specific plan to harvest and process the trees you are planting before or at maturity, you are better not to plant them, as grass has better Co2 removal.
  
  Grasses continue to remove Co2, whereas trees only remove it while in growth stage. At maturity they start putting it back. While trees appear to remove more carbon, based on their physical mass, grasses and native plants, remove the Co2 and put it into the soil. Another way of looking at it, grasses and plants create topsoil, without which trees could not grow.
  
  The earth was bare rock. Then came the lichens, then the mosses, then the grasses, and then the plants. Trees were late to the party, after the oxygen rich atmosphere was already created.
  
  But then, Co2 levels should be about 1000ppm to get maximum plant growth. Maximum plant growth means more plentiful food production, better pollution removal and more C02 to O2 conversion, Starve the plants, starve mankind.
  
  Perhaps this is what Climate Madness is all about – starving the planet.

    Me too in my house there are 3 pensioners and my wife in mid 50s she earns over $100k both my father and law and I have private pensions. We get 4 lots of heating allowance but have a winter bill at around $ 200 pm .
    Efficient house, free logs and solar water. We don’t need it but it pays the wine bill and the treasury isn’t getting any of it back!

    The alternative to universal benefits is non universal, rather obviously.
    Rich people don’t need to apply for the universal superannuation if they feel the taxpayer of today doesn’t need to shell out when they paid tax at a time when there were fewer recipients.
    Otherwise the benefit could be means tested. This probably causes more trouble and cost than what it’s worth.

      The current situation sees people having two jobs, paying the education taxes to do the right thing by their kids, and then seeing the private school getting less funding than the public schools. Meanwhile the ‘rich prick’ simply sends his kids to public school unquestioned, and commits no personal money into their education, EXCEPT, they then pay after school private tuition —- private fees are private fees!!!!
      
      Public schools are there to educate – not to immunise the wealthy!

  For those who comment on “institutional racism” in the New Zealand Police, I implore them to read –
  “There are 5000 Sams in our prisons. And they include his children, and his grandchildren” [1] a speech given by Kelvin Davis to the Criminal Justice Summit: Plenary discussion on over-representation of Māori in the system, 21 August 2018
  
  Its companion piece is “No mana for Māori” [2] in which Kelvin Davis (again) says for cheap political gain: Māori are more likely to be overweight, depressed, homeless, incarcerated and uneducated according to these disturbing statistics produced under National’s watch.
  
  This now traditional mantra – that Maori occupy the lowest negative social statistics, and repeated fequently and long enough as to be believed (like Ardern’s current “Go early, go hard” to cover the fact, we didn’t) – combined with the attitude Maori are the under-dog – again has just happened: Maori health given an extra $56 million, and next $900 million, because they would be hit twice as hard by cover-19, but in fact the impact was only about half the rate, 9% of cases, against their 16.5% population share.
  
  But it is the under-dog meme and the equally institutional attitude displayed in “5000 Sams in our prisons” that is what is on the other side of New Zealand’s police force and institutionalised racism.
  
  And no one is really dealing with it. Least of all, it would seem, would be Kelvin Davis.

  As Heather MacDonald pointed out in the Wall Street Journal [paywalled] this week, roughly a quarter of fatal police shootings are of African-Americans. But this isn’t surprising, even though they constitute 13 per cent of the population, given the disproportionate number of armed black suspects encountered by the police. In 2018 they made up 53 per cent of known homicide offenders in the US and committed about 60 per cent of robberies.
  
  Last year, the US police fatally shot more than twice as many unarmed white people as those who were black. A 2015 Justice Department analysis of the Philadelphia police department found that white police officers were less likely than black or Hispanic officers to shoot unarmed black suspects. What the **** are Wellington City Council up to now. Seems when Wellington Ratepayers were voting at the last election in 2019 even the most lame duck would not have guessed what lay ahead for them by voting in a bunch of self serving Parasitesor more like Triffids. Yes Labour /Green Councillors are hell bent on turning the City into a backwater and destroying hundreds of car parks by creating Cycle Lanes that will rarely be used .
Seems since they were elected in last Octobers’ council Elections other than opposing every positive vision by the New Mayor Andy Foster they have bumped up their income from circa mid $80,000 to circa $111,000 . Now with the proposed destruction of the inner city of Wellington and its roadways and car parks they probably could be compared to not Councillors more like a mirror image of the “Invasion of the Triffids”. Perception that the Wellington City Councillors are bereft of common sense, questions are now being asked who or what are pulling their strings.

This has been shown in the difficulty schools have had re-opening in a number of countries. It doesn’t place the same stress on vulnerable teachers who do have some risk.
It was reflected again on Q&A. “Is it time to ease up on some restrictions”?
Of the replies shown the 2 women were much more in favour of caution than the 3 men.

      The approval for the ANZACs was given under the Bolger government. The plan was to buy four but the second pair were scrapped by the incoming Clark government and replaced by “Project Protector”. This provided for a large ferry with serious seakeeping and stability issues (“Canterbury”), four Lake Class Inshore Patrol Vessels which have proved to be useless in the seas around New Zealand, and the two thankfully successful Offshore Patrol Vessels, “Otago” and “Wellington”. My firm has decided to move to a 60/40 split with enough desks for 60 percent of us, and 40 percent working at home at any one time. Less office rent, happy and productive people.

  Happy but not so productive. Over the years there have been plenty of research and anecdotal self reporting that many office jobs are meaningless. Just take a look at all the crazy job titles in emails.

    Tech failings and what I call refridgeratoritis seem to be the reason.

      Yes of course – if you have young flat mates, it is hopeless.
      
      I live alone – working at home has been an amazing experience, with seamless technology to collaborate and get things done. Over the last 8 weeks we finished 2 projects under budget and ahead of schedule – because we could collaborate better, we were not in noisy offices, we were not wasting time commuting…
      
      Of course people get together sometimes. But I will never, ever spend 40-50 hours a week in an “office” again. 15 hours per week is my current plan.

  Best of both worlds.
  Many of the offices around us are still working from home on a 50:50 basis.

Credit where it is due, the government has got us to this point and that is an achievement. I have not agreed with everything they did during this period but then I don’t think anyone knows yet whether the decisions made will turn out well in the long term. However I have zero confidence this government can handle the next period at all well. It is easy to throw money during a crisis but the true measure of a government is how they handle the period after and they have shown no ability to deliver anything of substance during their term. In saying that I would rate them a 70% chance of being voted in so I can only hope they learn to be a more competent government and fast.

      Technically they could replace existing directors until they had a group willing to fulfil any agendas – but I really doubt that they’d want to go down that path (everything to lose, nothing to gain — especially considering that this current “government” couldn’t organise a piss in a pub – let alone run a large business like an airline).

Oh bollocks Paulus… Why do we only have 176 ICU beds? Why do we have no plan to emergency scale that ICU capacity so the stupidity of a full lockdown can be avoided by scaling up capacity and exercising common sense approaches like moderate social distancing and good hygiene?

Bottom Line: we had a pandemic in 2009. 49 people die of flu variant H1N1. A report was commissioned on the short comings of the response. Nothing much changed after it was issued. That sits firmly on the Ministry and the DG of Health plus both major political parties. Result a fool and her crew have tanked the economy in panic and saddled our children and grandchildren with debt for the next 30 plus years if not longer (with negligible inflation to inflate the debt value away and make repayment manageable)

Our civil service has continuity through executive governance changes. They have not handled preparations properly after 20 plus years of pandemic near misses and scares e.g. SARS/MERS/H1N1. And no reporter has asked them tough questions…. clusterfuck sits at their door as they are the professionals charged with taking the long view and have budget capacity to plan effectively….

One story yesterday was entitled “27 police officers injured during largely peaceful protests anti-racism protests in London”, with an accompanying image that been cropped to remove the sight of a chap wielding a large length of timber toward a line of police.

They later changed the headline to “George Floyd: London anti-racism protests leave 27 officers hurt”, reflecting perhaps that it’s not possible to have 27 officers hurt in a ‘largely peaceful protest’

On Ardern R.’s half a $mill/yr she has no concept of others reality. Working capital doesn’t come by feelings but by profitable sales and being able to meet costs. Cash losses to business caused by govt shut down will put people out of work. Better some lose their jobs than the whole business closes down.

Govts can flagrantly hand out money to buy Northland or butter up Maori votes but they have a printing press and can mortgage the childrens’ work for the future. The Warehouse and others cannot. The Directors become criminally liable for trading if the company is broke: the COL do not. They spend without responsibility–no guillotine awaits their incompetency.

  However.
  These store closure had been planned prior to COVID-19. Their problem seems to be competition from online retailing, and I suspect the ‘no-name’ brands they peddle.
  They sell online themselves, but during Level 4 their service was woeful due to a bottleneck at the couriers.
  In the future these big barn outlets are going to lose out to online shopping.
  Shops that sell Books, newspapers, music have all drifted away.

Listening to an interview on RNZ ‘Nine to Noon’ with Stuff’s National Business Editor was a reminder of why Stuff was valued at $1.
She referred to ‘Muller’s Financial package for business’, suggesting companies could lay staff off, then rehire and get the $10K subsidy. That is grossly incorrect, and ignores the safeguards that are clearly spelt out in the package to stop that happening. She then went on to say ‘Jacinda and Grant’ had a lot of fun with it.
Seriously, you would expect some sort of professionalism from a Business Editor, or a National Radio host. If you refer to ‘Muller’ (should be Leader of the Opposition), surely you continue by at least referring to the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance ? But ‘Jacinda and Grant’ ?
This sort of thing is why the media is dying here, and frankly it can’t come soon enough.

$1uff shilling for some people that want to use hydro electricity to do “carbon capture”.

Even if you buy into the climate change stuff, this is an astonishingly bad idea technically. Sounds like a great idea for getting the snout in the trough though.

Making CO2 (by burning gas and oil) releasing it into the atmosphere, then trying to catch it again does not seems sensible and energy efficient process.

A far better use of the electricity would surely be to use it directly for productive work (heating, transport etc) and reducing the consumption of gas and oil in fuels.

But then we have a crazy “green world” where the Poms chop down native trees in USA, chip them then send them via ship to Uk to burn them in biofuel power stations to meet their quotas.

Yet another example of the press being dumb enough not to ask the obvious question, or their desire to simply to give Jacinda an easy ride.

Jacinda said yesterday that there WILL be further cases of Covid. The immediate logical questions would be “Prime Minister, where do you think this will come from and what measures do you have in place to manage it?”

Would have immediately brought into focus the ad-hoc decisions that are allowing certain people to enter NZ freely, and also highlight the fact that our contact tracing is woefully slow and inadequate.

Fran O’Sullivan pointed this out :
” Jacinda Ardern has yet to provide New Zealanders with detailed assurances that officials have prepared the intensive tracking, tracing and testing regime necessary to ensure that in the event of a Covid-19 virus flare-up at alert level 1 it can be stamped out quickly. I remember when

I remember Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd,The Roadrunner.
They used to have “shorts” and half-time and then the main movie. At our cinema (the town hall) it was usually a western. A great time.
Funny how I don’t remember anybody I went to the movies with becoming a bank robber, I doubt that many in the audience even owned a gun when they were older.
We didn’t hit anyone on the head with a sledgehammer or buried them alive.
I guess we just understood that the cartoons (or the 3 Stooges, or the Marx Brothers) weren’t real life!!!

  When I was a kid I regularly received toy guns as presents ( cap guns, spud guns etc ) as well as sheath knives.
  These knives had a steel blade with pressed steel handles riveted on, and usually came in a real stitched leather sheath ( stamped with some sort of Western motif ).
  I am, to the best of my knowledge, not a killer or demented danger to the public.

Kiwiblog poster Scott Hamilton today was in full cry on the Radio NZ chat show, Wallace Chapman’s the Panel.

Hamilton told how he had persuaded an Akaroa restaurant owner to change the restaurant’s name from “Bully Hayes”. Hamilton said that in addition to being a pirate and a Pacific slave trader, Hayes was a rapist and a paedophile. Hamilton quoted evidence in starkly explicit detail.

The panel itself, which included David Slack, enthusiastically added Central Otago’s Lake Hayes to the names which should be changed.

The Maori-dominated, revisionist Geographic Place Names Board would no doubt have welcomed an excuse to dump “Lake Hayes” for the Ngai Tahu name of “Whaka-ata a Haki-te-kura,” but a listener pointed out to the panel that the lake was not named after Bully Hayes.

It is named after a Scots pioneer, Donald Hay, whose name was spelled slightly differently.
Lake Hayes is now the site of a large new housing estate.

The American, Bully Hayes (William Henry Hayes), did run a pub at nearby Arrowtown in the early 1860s during the gold rush, but the lake was named earlier than his arrival.

According to his blurb at the NZ publisher, Bridget Williams Books, blog poster Scott Hamilton “has published books and essays about British socialism, Tongan art, kava drinking, and New Zealand history.”

Scott Hamilton brought in another American link, pointing out that some Confederates had settled in the Pacific Islands after the Confederacy was defeated in the Civil War, and, if my recall is correct, suggested they were looking for slaves for their newe ventures, which included growing cotton.

Wallace Chapman, the show host, could almost be seen over the wireless waves nodding in sympathy. Wallace’s dad was a clergyman in Fiji.

  I agree with Scott, those guilty of such acts should be reviled, shunned and any edifices, memorials or similar to such people should be torn down.
  
  I now urge the appropriate NZ authorities to begin a search through NZ’s history to identify those guilty and publish their names so that we might take to the streets and topple these monuments and enact our righteous vengeance.

I’ve just been reading In Defence of Open Society by George Soros. It’s an interesting collection of essays around the them of preserving liberal democracy. Particularly good chapters on the role of IT conglomerates like Facebook and Google, the 2008 GFC, and the EU.
