Two observations about the protests and riots following the death of George Floyd.

Observation one – a lot of the calls for the four officers to be charged have a disturbing feel of a lynch mob. No matter how damning the evidence seems, they are still entitled to due process.

Observation two – it seems extremely likely there will be a surge of COVID-19 cases in cities which have seen protests. A lot of the crowds seem pretty tightly packed. I don’t know how widespread masks are, but regardless they aren’t perfect protection.

  Agree with observation one. Not so convinced about observation two. Transmission outdoors is very low, something like 5% of indoors. Deaths in the <75 age range are rare, and almost always for people with existing health conditions that are unlikely to see them participating in riotous demonstrations.

  The very important thing to keep in mind is given the clear evidence, no regular citizen would have been allowed to remain uncharged for as a long as this cop did. Can you seriously imagine yourself on video for 12 minutes with your knee on a man’s neck as he begged for his life and then died, and the police not immediately taking you into custody and laying a charge?

    Part of due process is determining cause of death. A coroner must determine that after an autopsy has Ben carried out. In Mr Floyd’s case it would appear Cathay cause of death was not strangulation or asphyxiation. The said cop should not have been charged until cause of death was determined

      No reasonable person would claim that being pinned down like that didn’t contribute in some way to his death.
      
      So there is still a case to answer regarding his behaviour, even if not a murder case perhaps.

      Coroners don’t report what the cause of death was not. They report the cause of death.
      
      I’ve seen the medical examiners report that says he had hypertensive heart disease and coronary artery disease. “Both diseases combined with being restrained by the police, plus any potential intoxicants may have contributed to his death”.
      
      If that was your relative, would you believe that? Ask someone in your household weighing no less than 90kg to put their full weight into a knee on your neck and see if there is no chance of either your breathing or carotid blood supply being cut off.

        Exactly. The man’s medical status is not the issue. Healthy or diseased the level of restraint he was exposed to was unconscionable. He was cuffed and on the ground. He was no threat in that position, or indeed even if standing. Yet the cop felt the need to do what he did for a very long period of time, and his colleagues stood by and watched. They too should be charged with accessory.
        
        What can his possible defence be? Not that he was in danger. Then what? That a *healthy* person would not have died?

      The cop has been charged with Murder 3, which, I understand (without bothering to research it), is roughly equivalent to manslaughter.
      
      George Floyd was perfectly fine when the cops baled him up. Then he was dead. The charge, laid when it was, was entirely appropriate.

One is those who want to see Trump gone and I believe are using this to whip up racial riots. The other is white supremacists using this to build anger against protesting black Americans

    I don’t think there’s any evidence at all that “White supremacist” are involved, that’s just the narrative that those organising these riots are trying to push – for political reasons.
    
    This is a well organised strategy to agitate the black community and to push back against the inroads Trump has been making in that area. Well planned, just waiting for the appropriate trigger. And the Democrats are a party to it, why, they’re even trying to accuse the Russians of being involved !

        No matter what’s in the coroner’s report or the independent examiner’s report, its not going to satisfy all sides of the fiasco and it’s certainly not going to restore looting damage.

New Zealand Superannuation – good article in Stuff yesterday from Rob Stock. Traverses lots of ideas and options, some of which might be policies heading into the election. Ideas include – raising eligibility age of course, increasing resident requirement, tax the rich, pay by growing the economy.

Greens – interested in exploring ways to allow flexibility in the age a person may receive New Zealand Superannuation. Probably code for earlier access based on race.

Last but not least, academics from the Retirement Policy Research Centre are united in their call for more research. Now there’s a surprise.

  – lockdown fever
  – unemployment
  – US election year
  – economic uncertainty
  – opportunistic activists from out of town
  – low levels of intelligence
  – weak leadership
  
  Riots may be partially directed by groups with an agenda.
  I can understand the motives of opportunistic locals looting “for free stuff” from stores where none of them work, but why would a mob attack a value-less target like the CNN office in Atlanta unless they were led like sheep to do so?

    The US has had riots like this dating back to the 1960’s. I guess the first I was aware of was Watts, 1968. About 30 killed.
    
    The reasons are deep seated including legacy of slavery, civil rights, ghettos, economic deprivation, gangs, drugs, etc.
    
    They happen no matter who is the president, with the trigger typically being someone killed by the police. Then the riots spin out of control for the next week or so. You still see the damage years later.
    
    Will this latest round help Trump? Maybe. Often at the next election a conservative who is tough on law and order is elected. Think Nixon in 1968. Of course he was the change candidate, not the incumbent.
    
    I suspect Trump is in too big an electoral hole for the riots to fish him out.

We were having a lie in this morning listening to the trany and heard that doctor Bryce Edwards say, “…. the problem for Todd Muller is the lack of racial diversity in the naming of his new lineup.”

What the good doctor doesn’t seem to understand, it is more likely that it is this so called ‘lack of diversity’, that will drive people back to vote National in their droves.

  That doesn’t mean that equal weight is given to the voice of all fifty five. In fact the inference is there’s a leadership team of ten influential people.
  Maori are the original people of NZ and 16.6% identified themselves as such in the last census.
  I would suggest they should be represented in the leadership team of the most numerous party in our House of Representatives.

The National entire front bench is now Pākehā.
National leader Todd Muller is defending the lack of Māori MPs on the party’s frontbench, saying the party makes decisions based “on merit” rather than ethnicity.

I am disappointed Muller didn’t point to the merit – or in fact, the lack of it – in Labour’s Maori cactus now that they hold ALL seven special Maori seats, but despite that they stood by and watched the demise of partnership schools – or in the case of pakeha union championing Willie Jackson seemingly encouraged it. The schools were an aspect of Maori education seen by many (although having some problems) as being a success and taonga (treasure) of Maori, and indeed as such, are now subject of an appeal before the Waitangi Tribunal calling for their restoration.
Nowhere, in fact, do I think a cost in millions or whatever has ever been being given for running partnership schools – and that would be very interesting in the context that no one seems to have an annual total for promoting Maori language, te reo, with estimates ranging between $200 million and $600 million a year, but in the last Budget another $109 million is thrown at it.

A disparaging theory seems to be that Kelvin Davis is Deputy Labour Leader as a token appointment and appears this is born out in the number of times he isn’t used to deputise for Ardern.

Ihumatao is another point of contention where Labour’s Maori caucus has been utterly ineffective while expected to have a view.

In fact New Zealand First’s electoral promise of a referendum on Maori seats appears to have evaporated perhaps because the Labour incumbents have proved how ineffective they are, and as NZ First’s own member, Shane Jones, demonstrates National’s argument of “on merit”.

      FPP meant voters got the yes-no on any particular candidate. Voters are collectively canny and know when someone is not up to the expectations needed for executive office. Having good feelingz or being colourful was not sufficient. Their own personal policies don’t count either. Voters viewed candidates in the flesh not as names on lists.     I was a candidate in the distant past and know the scrutiny by the community. There were rare poor candidates who were replaced before voting day. Candidates then were much more visible and interactive in their electorates and could easily turn away voters. If you had a single issue that had to be subsidiary to the policies of the Party.

Have we heard our PM reassuring those people that if they catch the virus, it is most unlikely that they will have any serious problems with it, that unless they are over 80 with co-morbidities they will not die, and that in many cases they will have no symptoms at all? No, because they are using people’s fear to ensure their compliance. It’s a power trip fuelled by a moral panic. It is utterly irresponsible to keep people in unjustified fear in order to get them to do your bidding.

  And it doesn’t hurt that Cameron is a paid up darling of the environmental left – running down the traditional Kiwi rural sector whilst he pushes his “anti-meat” agenda, which extends to insisting that catered in lunches on the film set are vegan.

I’ve been a supporter of the economic benefits of the film sector in Wellington over the years but I’m massively unimpressed by the exceptions made for James Cameron and his hangers on arriving in from LA today. It just wreeks of the lefts adoration of the film sector and the “Wellington scene”. Jobs for foreigners etc when this government has snubbed its nose at Kiwi jobs for the last 10 weeks, was forced to let go a few myself, yet exceptions are being made for the trendy set. Disgusting. Fair enough if this government was thinking outside the square for the rest of us, but they plainly haven’t been. Different rules for the trendy set and the rest of us. So much for Labour being the party of the people – not that I believed that to start with
