Kiwis overwhelmingly agree Government responded appropriately to Covid-19 – 1 NEWS poll

Those polled were asked, “Do you think the New Zealand Government has responded appropriately to the coronavirus outbreak?” The results were: Yes – 92%, No – 7%
Don’t know/Not sure what coronavirus is – 2% (Percentages do not add to 100% due to rounding)

However, whether Ardern’s now so often repeated slogan – “Go early, go hard”, which she still hammers – has convinced everyone that the timing was optimum is another question, considering the painfully long process – more than three weeks to do the crucial first 1,000 tests – before the border was closed and whether we could have better acted like Australia: without totally fucking the New Zealand economy as it has been.
(Tell us more about the theory that Bloomfield threatened to resign if Ardern went ahead with a Christchurch mass commemoration of the mosque massacres)

And now that Ardern on Monday has revealed some idea of the time it will take to move from Level 2 to Level 1, just how much does that change the population’s view?

The poll which made yesterday evening’s headlines just doesn’t allow for for Monday’s announcements – because the poll is already a whole fucking week old –
Between May 16 to 20, 2020, 1003 eligible voters were polled by landline (402) and mobile phone (601).

  That’s sounds desperate Yvette. A week-old poll is what it is, thinking that the dumping of a political leader would impact on questions of support for the lockdown and the economy, both past events, is a stretch. It’s probably a ship that will never turn around.

    Sorry, “Monday’s announcements” was supposed to refer to “now that Ardern on Monday has revealed some idea of the time it will take to move from Level 2 to Level 1″ in the preceding sentence – nothing to do with National, but the time that Ardern will hold the country now at Level 2.
    But it is not the first time, that what is in the mind, does not end up on the computer screen.

      I listened to a Maori woman on talkback radio last night criticising Paula Bennett for being lightweight and uncle tommish. At the end of her rant the talkback dude asked said Maori labourite woman what does she think of Kelvin Davis. Her response was who is he.. go figure

    When I talk to people about the Covid response, I mention that ‘Level 4’ should not have allowed only ‘essential services’ but any business that could trade safely. And people agree: both business owners and employees (e.g. retail staff).
    
    So I doubt that this poll gave people the chance to give a ‘curate’s egg’ response.

  Given the information and data we had when we went into the Lockdown, it was the right call (but later than is should have been).
  
  Given the information and data we have now, we didn’t need a level 4 Lockdown and we need to get back to Level 0 as fast as possible before we destroy the country.

    “We” already had a lot of information that fully supported the need for early high-and low-level planning, significantly ramping up the ability to test in advance of any confirmed outbreak of community transmission, and absolutely shutting down the borders to non-New Zealanders and people without right of NZ residency as well as at least two weeks strict quarantine under observation for the people who were still allowed to enter, coupled with screening before boarding flights and ships. We did none of that. There was never any need for the level IV lockdown until the government sat on its collective glutei only because the Saintin Chief / sarc wanted another Christchurch photo opportunity. Then having skipped all the planning and preparation, we got shoved into a lockdown because ? Bloomfield threatened to quit (rumour we’ve all heard) & she called some friends of hers in London (fact she reported herself).

  The 60% mobile phone users polled means there is unlikely to be a statistical balance that represents NZ population. Without doubt ardern with Bloomfields support appears competent but with Winston breaking ranks and the economic outlook looking very uncertain I still predict 2020 will be ardern and her coalition of clowns Anus Horiblis and may follow Corbin into political oblivion for a decade.

Yesterday, in comments on the post about Marilyn Waring backing Louisa Wall, there were a couple of horrible comments.
Nukuleka claimed that ‘Surprise, surprise, one lesbian supports another’. greybeard said:

Marilyn Waring: lesbian
Louisa Wall: lesbian
Hey ! Any conflict of interest here?

This kind of homophobia should be condemned.

A moderator removed by comments in reply, without any explanation. When I asked about comment removal on the GD thread, a moderator claimed that:

Someone who posts a thoughtful and genuine opinion deserves better than a flyby 2 or 3 word insult from a nasty prick like yourself.

After that, in replying to another commenter’s attack on me, a moderator then said that ‘this blog is for everyone to voice opinions – if you want to engage, discuss the opinion, don’t attack the poster’.

I really enjoy this blog, but incidents like that leave a sour taste in the mouth. I’m quite happy to cop flack, or bans if I transgress. But perhaps moderators should only remove comments in their entirety for good reasons, and keep their personal opinions of other commenters out of their decisions.

    Worth a read in sections.
    Of course it was my years in Wellington so I find interesting as I knew a number of the National caucus – had the pride in verbally being assaulted a couple of time by David Lange.

    It is a horrible assumption: that the only reason Waring would support Wall is because they are both lesbians. This defines both women by the sexual orientation only. It would be equally offensive to assume that a heterosexual male would vote for Todd Muller solely because they shared the same sexual orientation.

      But it is a quite reasonable assumption that Waring would have increased natural affinity for Wall, and would tend to be more supportive as a default setting. Snide comments about white men clubbing together generally pass without comment after all. Just because the word Lesbian or Gay is used without fawning deference and praise for the persons referred to doesn’t mean there is any ‘homophobia’. PS, I personally feel the Mods are being over zealous in this instance in censuring you (and many others in recent times) , but DPF’s blog DPF’s rules.

      The thought she would do so is horrible, the assumption, not so much (but is a bit bigoted). We see it again and again. All my Lefty friends were calling anyone that voted for Trump sexist because they believed that was the only reason they wouldn’t vote for Hilary. When Boris won the election, gay activists blasted him for not selecting enough LGBT people. Even yesterday, Lefties were attacking National for having no Maori in the top 12.
      
      As noted by others, when identity is such an important thing to you, as it is to many on the Left, it can drive your decisions.
      
      Waring probably has other reasons for backing Wall, but it is a realistic possibility that she does so to increase the “gay quota”. It’s not so far outside the realm of possibility to be an unreasonable assertion.

      The “thinking brain” part to your comment is material. Thinking and assessing people based on their competence/values is hard work. Much easier to vote for someone based on some identity issue: better vote for the black woman otherwise people will think I’m sexist and racist.

        I suppose there are politicians who do present themselves as a normal family man/woman with two kids who understands the common person. But they likely don’t generally call anyone that disagrees with them a normalphobe.
        
        There are some Christian parties who make a song and dance about being Christian. They don’t try to shame non Christians into voting for/supporting them. I’ve never hear them wailing about Christianphobes. It might happen, but I have not heard it.
        
        It does seem though that there are lots of gay/female/refugee/Indian/Maori/whatevers who expect an upside from exploiting their identity but when they get pushback they scream Xphobe.
        
        What they should realise is that if you signal that you have an in-crowd, then you simultaneously signal that you have an out-crowd.

    As one who gets frequently “moderated” for allowing a comment to stray into what a mod perceives as personal abuse, I can say that I see mikey’s comment as little more than abuse of the poster. For mikey that is a common occurrence.
    
    In my defense, I have a more direct sense of humour than a particular mod so suffer the consequences when he/she doesn’t get it ?

  I disagree the comments are homophobic. The gay community is just that – a “community”. That means that it is credible to point out that a gay political commentator may have sympathy for the plight of a gay politician at least partly because she is gay. I do not find it credible that Marilyn would have penned a similar piece about a straight woman who otherwise had all the attributes of Louisa Wall.
  
  By contrast, there is no heterosexual “community” because about 98 percent of people are at least predominantly heterosexual.
  
  For the record, I don’t care whether Louisa Wall is the candidate or not. It is a matter for the Labour Party. I also agreed with the marriage inequality law change.

      Quotas, identity activism etc are very real things and when someone who shares a cause with someone backs them politically it’s reasonable to point it out. Just like how many people ignore what scientists working for big oil or Susie the Socialist say.
      
      Ironically, it’s why Maurice Williamson got a huge amount of the credit for the marriage equality bill instead of Wall, because he didn’t have skin in the game and was just doing what he thought was right.

        There are literally constant calls for more representation for LGBT people by LGBT people. The fact the person backing the gay person against the non-gay person is gay is entirely relevant. It’s not bigotry, it’s simply a statement of fact. It’s not that they share a sexual orientation, it’s that Louisa Wall is a proven advocate of gay rights, Arena Williams isn’t and Waring benefits from that advocacy. It is entirely reasonable for a gay person to want to back the gay rights advocate but it’s also entirely reasonable to point out that they have skin in the game.
        
        Just because you think something is bigotry doesn’t mean it is. You are making assumptions against people based on your perception of their political leanings. That actually is bigotry.
        
        We’re just saying that Louisa Wall actively advocates for LGBT issues so it’s reasonable to expect other LGBT activists to be backing her and to take that into account when they do.

        No one sector of society is “protected” from being offended. I see a recent UK High Court judge ruled that. Maybe as a mod and a poster you and the rest of us could learn from that ruling.
        
        Being offended does not make the comment offensive in my mind and I have been abused on this blog by both posters and mods but like most big boys I either take it on the chin or fight back.

        It’s not Islamophobia to point out the values followed by Muslims. Citing what their scripture says, and what a lot of them as individuals agree with, is not discriminating against them it is simply talking about their faith based values.
        
        Saying Muslims don’t eat bacon is no different to saying Muslims don’t accept homosexuality. Both are no more and no less than observations of the things dictated to them by their religion.

But I welcome your views as a breath of, well if not fresh, then certainly different air, as I believe the way to better understanding of one another isn’t dismissal or ignorance or fear of alternative views, but rather an embrace of them as valid and valuable. After all, we all see the world differently and respect and appreciation of those differences is nothing more than common decency.

    I don’t support all aspects of “moderation policy” as they are poorly defined in some ways and what you see as black I may see as dark grey. Calling me an arsehole doesn’t bother me but labelling me “childish” or “homophobic” is unreasonable as the my right of reply is somewhat restricted as is my ability to respond in kind by … moderation.

    My ma-in-maw got in touch on Monday. She had listened to Kathryn Ryan browbeating Todd Muller, barely letting him get a word in edgeways. She described Ryan as “pushy and rude” and thought Muller handled himself well.

        I don’t know this for sure, but it must have something to do with what they are taught in “media training”. As soon as you are interrupted, stop talking.
        
        Politically, that is better than being seen by the TV audience as rude (by talking over the interviewer), or frustrated or angry (with the interviewer), etc.
        
        In my view, that is why it was unfair to describe Kelvin Davis as “pathetic”, etc., following his interview with Paul Henry. Henry was determined to ride roughshod over Davis, and the media-trained Davis allowed him to, knowing that Henry would come out looking worse than him (not to commenters here, perhaps, but generally).
        
        The Tame-Muller (Monday night) interview was different, because Muller refused to answer Tame’s primary question. Why? Because Muller knows full well that, should he be prime minister from October, his government will spend much more than the current government has already indicated it will spend, as will the current government.

    Listening to Moaning Report this morning with the Ferguson “interview” with Henare – Ferguson and her production team, actually enticed and encouraged Henare to call Muller a racist by not selecting a maori – or as I prefer to call them, East Polynesians – into the front bench of his line-up.
    
    Is it not basically racist to claim, as Moaning Report consistently does, that people chosen for public positions need to be selected on the basis of their race?

        Yes, it is collectively called the HOUSE of Representatives, not the Front Bench of Ethnic Representatives.
        
        By the way, there are 29 MPs claiming Maori ancestry (30 if you count Goldsmith lol), accounting for 24% of all MPs. Yet the percentage of the NZ population claiming Maori ancestry is only 16.5% so in fact Maori are over-represented by almost 50%!!!
        
        Where are the headlines denouncing this clear reverse racism? Where are the calls for balance? Where are the hagiographies praising the Great Balancer, Muller?
        
        All joking aside, where are the calls for MPs to be selected and promoted for their experience, skills, aptitude and competence, rather than the colour of their skin?

        White is not an ethnicity? Or group of ethnicities?
        
        The RNZ web site caps the State entity’s neutral stance [sarc.] with the blurb about the National front bench item:
        
        “The lack of diversity of the National Party’s top team is raising eyebrows, and even a eliciting a modicum of mockery.
        
        “While three out of the top ranked MPs are women, there are no Maori MPs on the front bench.
        
        “Other non-Pakeha MPs don’t get a look in either.”
        
        A “modicum of mockery”. How quaintly BBC. How colonial of RNZ.
        
        It was Ferguson’s ambush interview, talking over Simon Bridges, who is part-Maori, that sparked the party mutiny that overthrew him.
        
        Now Ferguson is bitching that the toppling of Bridges and his part-Maori deputy, the similarly very capable Paula Bennett, leaves National without Maori on its front bench.

  Don’t be fooled that because the parliamentary press gallery were nice to you on Friday and Monday, that they will be nice to you the following day – clearly they weren’t and decided to make a minor story a major story, no doubt their justification being is that it’s “newsworthy” because of the way the politicians responded.
  
  Leadership is a tough gig (look at the crap and distractions that Simon Bridges and Paula Bennett had to endure – they became the fall guys for anything and everything and the same will apply to the nice Mr Muller and nice Ms Kaye – might be wise to consider further media training perhaps).
  
  Now as I said last week I’m not convinced the Muller/Kaye leadership coup was a good thing, and I will criticise them if they stuff up, but this is the new team that needs supporting and although I am sympathetic to Simon Bridges and Paula Bennett for being stabbed by cowards in the back I would expect better of them, so Paula please try not to lol like you did yesterday publicly and for goodness sake Simon take up the Justice portfolio (not foreign affairs) because your extensive knowledge of the justice system and inner mongrel will be a strength when taking on the duplicitous and scheming “Angry” Andy Little. It’s all Simon’s to win and Andrew’s to loose – game on!

    Stabbed by cowards in the back, you say? Far from it, it was done the National way, rolling them away from the cameras but very much to their face.
    
    Do you imagine it was easy for Muller, not yet through his second term as an MP, to mount a challenge knowing that if he failed (and Bridges’ move to call the emergency caucus meeting was equally brave, though ultimately self-defeating), that could well be the end of his aspirations? He would not have been rewarded for the distraction of a leadership spill if Bridges had managed to rebuff it, and if National lost under Bridges (as they surely would have), Muller would cop some of the blame.
    
    I think it took courage, organisation, persuasion and decisiveness. These are all qualities I admire and want to see in the Leader of the National Party.

      Hey I’ve don’t have anything against Todd Muller and Nikki Kaye (they are very capable MP’s in their own right and hopefully will do well for National as the new leadership) as they weren’t the instigators (apparently the likes of Michelle Boag was and she simply chose them to front the party). So the backstabbing I’m referring to is within the wider party (hierarchy) itself and the other thing is, how can you have former Presidents undermining the current President (and former leadership)?
      
      It’s bad enough having H1 interfering with Labour and their leadership in the background, perhaps I naively thought National wouldn’t do the same!

      There was. Nikki Kaye said he was Ngāti Porou (I may have spelt that wrong). When Goldsmith was questioned he said he had extended family and family who had married Ngāti Porou. So obviously Nikki was referring to what she knew about Goldsmith. She was inaccurate in the fact he was not a descendant himself.

They should have known this was going to come up, but panicking and saying Paul Goldsmith had some ancient maori connection was not even required. They should have just said they previously had a maori leader and deputy, so obviously not racist, but now they have moved on and have selected on merit based on who is here now. Bennett even seemed to be making fun of this too which points to disharmony. Cant afford to make mistakes like this against Ardern etc. The first day in the house wasn’t flash either. Got to get themselves together. Shouldn’t be apologising for anything. Not taking the hat was BS too.

  So try and do the same again please, when questioned by the MSM eg you picked your initial top 10 on merit (and you will keep an eye on other National Maori MP’s performance for promotion later) and that by the way, unlike the govt you don’t appoint people by race to senior positions on tokenism!

      Muller dealt with Jacindmania in an exemplary way. By admitting and acknowledging that her performance had been impressive he took the wind out the media’s sails, and immediately painted himself as different from his predecessor.
      
      There’s absolutely zero mileage in criticising Jacinda or the government’s response – regardless of your opinion, the votes are in and the people love her. Fighting that is peeing into the wind and Todd seems to be a lot smarter than that.
      
      But he also said he reserves the right to criticise them, and will criticise them, and drew a line under the health response and shifted the focus to the economic response. He portrayed National as being far better qualified and experienced to rebuild the economy, and I think he’s correct. He just has to convince another 15 – 20% of middle New Zealand and it’s game on.

We have many in the media losing their little minds over a bloody hat, and if National have enough Maori in their front bench. All this while we have daily news of redundancies on a scale unprecedented in NZ history, yet no analysis or in-depth view of the effects this is having on both the people involved, their families or the economy.
Could it be the MSM are running deflection on the unemployment issue, as the Wage Subsidy hasn’t stemmed the flow – The assistance both Ardern and Robertson go to when questioned on what they are doing to assist business.
Having to use a bloody hat, and implied racism, to undermine a new opposition leader say’s more about the Government, and its lack of an economic plan, and the MSM. Throwing more tax-payer money, via borrowing, seems to be the only government answer but I suspect many out there are starting to see through this as unemployment rises.

Last night, both TV channels led their news with a non-story about whether or not Paul Goldsmith is Maori. Can you imagine a different scenario, had this image been put into the public domain by someone like Mark Richardson or Sean Plunket, and the targets had been politicians from the Left? But so far, the silence from Tova O’Brien and her Newshub colleagues, from Jessica Mutch-Mackay and her colleagues at One News, and from RNZ, the Herald and from Stuff, where the author of the tweet has worked in the past, is deafening.

Ironically, O’Brien had a tweet promoting Newshub’s lead story last night which closed “You couldn’t make this shit up”. Some would argue that’s exactly what she and her fellow travelers do, on a regular basis!

    The first member of my family to reach New Zealand was Charles George Goldsmith, who settled in Poverty Bay in the mid-1840s. That is the sort of spirit that built this nation. But it was not easy for Charles George Goldsmith.     On my mother’s side, her great-grandfather Edward Turner came to New Zealand in 1883. Like many migrants he was fleeing trouble at home and looking for a fresh start in a new land.       There is no confusion there, Tony. Given that we have no evidence to the contrary, Goldsmith is clearly descended from one of the two Pākehā wives.
      
      I would also point out to Kiwibloggers, that while there may well be 29 current MPs who claim Māori ancestry (Loddenthinks, at 11:12AM, above), there is a big difference between having a smattering – or perhaps a little more – of Māori blood in your veins, and identifying as Māori.
      
      No way do 29 of our 120 MPS identify as Māori.

Concern was raised yesterday by my partners mum (she’s a member of lobby group Hobson’s Choice) when she called to say rumors were rife in the Retirement Village that Epsom may well become a ‘Maori Seat’.
She was saying that whilst Paul Goldsmith has categorically denied being Maori, he has nevertheless not totally rejected his own whanaungatanga.

We had a unique and massive advantage of isolation, we are a couple of islands in the middle of nowhere.

  Now for winter, no job, no heat, no money. Hug anyone ? Well, you going to actually need a hug now, because it is the only way you will keep warm.

Smoking ban in cars in the presence of children is just a BS piece of legislation for politicians to stand on top of the steps of Parliament to make themselves feel relevant and say they did something good for society. This was proposed and passed the guise of protecting the children, a subject which I am sure would decidedly pull the heart strings of the voters. Why not go the whole way and just ban smoking altogether? It will certainly save more lives than coronavirus might kill in a generation. Yet, this government is even considering allowing recreational use of cannabis? C’mon Cindy, Let’s get this done? You might just end up saving more lives this way than your lockdown?

  I was in an English country pub with my local agrarian cousin in 2005. Smoking was on the verge of being banned in such places and the clientele was up in arms and wanted us to sign a petition.
  Ten years later when I went back nobody was complaining anymore.
  As far as I’m concerned the sooner kids are no longer subjected to tobacco smoke in cars or anywhere else the better.

  Greenfinger, I hated the stench of smoke in the car. Most journeys I’d hang my head out of the window throughout a journey to get fresh air. It didn’t even occur to my parents that maybe not inflicting smoke on me was an idea.
  
  Whether it should have become law can be argued, but certainly smokers in the 70s and 80s needed to at least be made aware that giving kids fresh air would be better.

  In the past National Party leadership changes used to be clean. It sems those days are gone with leaks from Caucus and public displays of animosity between caucus members.

All seven Maori special racist seats (originally instituted to allow representation for Maori who owned land collectively, rather than individually – landownership being a criteria for voting, and now of course abandoned, as should be the special seats) are held by Labour.

The most prominent achievement in this current Coalition Government by the Maori caucus group is upholding the largely pakeha education union policy that destroys the partnership schools, so resulting in a claim to the Waitangi Tribunal over what was seen by many as a taonga, or treasure.

That National seems to have no equivalent of this racist group is not really a disadvantage.

What a debacle yesterday, it’s quite frustrating being a National supporter (for now) at the moment. All they needed to say was we have decided on the best lineup end of story. Yet it turned into an absolute circus 🙁 And they are obviously still divided, those Bridges supporters need to eat a concrete pill and harden up.   When are people going to wake up to the fact that NZ’s isolation IS the new normal for many, many years?
  
  Even when (if) flights do resume prices will be so high that the idea of an affordable overseas holiday will be history – especially if you factor in the financial crippling we’re about to experience.

      I have foreign passports and the money to go where I want when those flights arrive. It’s annoying that I’ll have to pay first-class prices for business though but nothing will tempt me into economy (at Biz Class prices) for long-haul.
      
      Now ask if your fellow countrymen are in the same position – this is about the new normal. And that’s staying at home for the best part of a decade.

Every time I see a hijab I am reminded that Islam wants to kill my gay friends. This is very distressing to me.

When does diversity become more important than proportional representation?
The Labour Party parliamentarians are 26 White (56.5%) , 12 Maori (26%), 6 Pacific Is (13%) and Other 2 (4%).
For the general population figures are White 67%, Maori 16.5% and PI 7.4%.
Add the NZF parties 44% Maori and 12.5% Maori for the Greens and the Maori percentage for the CoL is 27%. Incidentally if we take women in the top twenty its National 40% and Labour 30%.
The electorate often makes finding balance difficult and the media’s shark attack on the White National front bench is hardly even handed. Another easy story without the need to analyse and probably made easier by PR help.

I have often used the analogy of political rivalry being like competition between two movies.

At the moment we’re watching a Bridget Jones chick-flick which She plays very well. Thirty-something woman, no real life achievements, bumbling along day to day, but somehow this quirkiness is somehow endearing. Those little slip ups and errors are easy for many people to relate to. Somehow the package works for the target audience.

Bridget Jones was good enough to have a successful sequel, but the third was a disaster.

Bridges never really made a clear movie plot. Angry teenager, “look I’ve also got a baby”. Too many genres. Ended up being like one of those recent woke movies that takes super heroes and replaces the key characters with black lesbians. Nobody can figure out what the movie is trying to say and nobody watches.

Now what’s Todd Muller’s movie? Does he even know?

At first I thought we’d see another “captain of the quarterdeck” like Key. A strong leader that you’d trust to get you through the storm.

But the first sign of confrontation (the MAGA hat) and he’s cowering. That does not build confidence in the crew.

He only has a very brief time to figure it out and present a clear picture to the punters otherwise nobody is going to buy tickets.

I supported Bridges but like Muller and will back him all the way. Do you really want Jacinda and her band of half wits in charge again? As a matter of interest Jordan Petersen, the famous conservative right psychologist collects soviet memorabilia and art. In fact his home is full of it. He is in no way left leaning or communist.       LG: I appreciate your thoughtful comment, but from my perspective, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Whenever I’ve started a new job I made it my absolute business to be exemplifying the fact that they hired the right guy as best I could, even though, I had zero experience in that particular position and was climbing a steep learning curve. I was somewhat hopeful of Muller but caving in on the hat and the race questions was simply spineless.
      
      I’ve been reading my Alinsky the last few years and I would advise him to do the same (not that he needs to listen to me because I’m not a party leader 🙂 )
      
      These are the specific Alinsky Rules (suitably chosen for my lowly station in life and reduced in number from the original 13 because I have a short attention span) that I am trying to practice in recent years and I recommend them unto him.

As the old saying goes, you know you’re over the target when you’re taking flak. It’s only been five days since Muller was made leader of the National party and already the media seem like they’re in full blown attack mode. Yesterday, one of the lead stories on 1 News was about the lack of “diversity” in National’s cabinet lineup. Today we have John Campbell attacking Muller on the morning show for his “lack of detail” in a recovery plan, with Muller countering (rightly), “I’ve only been in the job five days!”

Not to mention that Labour have been making it up as they go along for 3 years.

Then on Three we have Mark Richardson saying he is “pissed off” by the way Muller has handled controversies like the MAGA hat. I am more pissed off at the media for making something out of nothing at all.

The libs are running scared…

Get her to write the responses, get her on board to discuss and strategize any media interviews from here on in.

Bridges, Muller, Kaye don’t have the skills required to handle partisan media, the only one in national who does is Collins, use her skills.

This should be her number one job leading up to the election.

Up to a couple of weeks ago, MSD was saying around 1000 people a day were applying for Jobseeker benefits (aka the dole). I suspect that number is now closer to 2000 per day, or 10,000 per week.

I see the TAB has let more than 200 people go, including their frontman Mark Stafford, who has been with them for 20 years but is now considered surplus to requirements. Sadly, no one is immune to the virus of redundancies and unemployment.

    It is most likely there will just be a reduction in new builds. The removal of LVRs will put a huge number of people that still have jobs onto the house market as well. I’m not sure what percentage of the workers in the tourism industry were home owners so I’m not sure what kind of increase in the supply of housing we can expect from forced sellers.

I see a huge wobble developing because workers are asked to speak English.

It is discourteous to speak in a language that others do not understand and is especially important in a workplace to ensure everyone gets all the information they need.

It is surely fine to make understanding English, and speaking English, a requirement for employment even if just from a health & safety perspective.

How are people supposed to convey that there is a dangerous spill, hot water or a customer has a nut allergy if they don’t have, and use, a common language? Charades just does not cut it.

These things do not happen in a vacuum. Likely something happened to precipitate this like two non-Englsih speakers were making, or seemed to be making, snide remarks about a co-worker or customer in non-English and this caused problems.

    I didn’t know that there was any general directive to keep staff home until September. I think things will get back to normal over the next month.
    Lots of people would prefer to work from home, though, so this experience will be a catalyst for some quite significant shifts in work patterns.
    So yes, some businesses will suffer if there is a permanent reduction of people working in the CBD. Other businesses will benefit.

    You miss the point. It will never be the same again. This experience has demonstrated that the “full time office” model was broken. Too many offices are vile, noisy, crowded places that are awful for productivity. Offices need to be reinvented to support collaboration, not places that cram people in like chickens.
    
    I am planning my office space requirements using a 60/40 rule. Staff will be working at home 60 percent of the time. Permanently.

  In caring for the profoundly disabled, teacher aides can be doing an extremely difficult job, especially those with those caring for young adults. These are young people who are subject to seizures cant go to the toilet for themselves cant talk and can be violent. Those assisting in mainstream schools probably have an easier time than in a dedicated special needs school and deserve recognition for this
