      Just realised that means that that they are HM’s Ministers and their oath of loyalty to HM requires them to carry out the standards she sets in Government of Her Realm.

      That has been the difference between Labour and National for near on twenty years now.
      National has a lot of active members from all walks of life across the country, hence the large number of electorates they hold, and how they maintain popularity even in opposition.
      Labour is propped up by Union delegates waiting to get on the list. They have no reach into the community. They rely on the media and a few academics for electoral support.

        It’s depth of support that counts. Women particularly are sensitive to the ability of a govt to manage the nations’s resources. Borrowing they are also very conscious of as that can bring future hardship.
        A govt that doesn’t know how to manage shouldn’t borrow. Feelings are not adequate for Government.

        Brett why would China use any New Zealand port as a transportation hub between China and South America? Someone, perhaps you, have raised this rumour before.
        
        Consider these direct air distances (sea distances won’t be too dissimilar):
        
        Shanghai to Auckland: 9346 km
        Shanghai to Lima, Peru: 17,165 km
        Auckland to Lima, Peru: 10,760km.
        Shanghai to Lima, Peru, via Auckland: 20,160km
        
        It’s 17 per cent longer flying/shipping from Auckland to Peru via Auckland than it is going direct, and of course there would be no trans-shipment expense.
        
        Shipping from Shanghai to Port of Rio de Janeiro via Auckland would be more than 36 per cent longer in nautical miles than shipping directly from Shanghai to Port of Rio de Janeiro.

        Think why China might suggest a trans-shipment port in New Zealand when the transport economics don’t stack up: goods days longer at sea, then unloading, storing for days (perhaps weeks if ships weren’t available), then reloading. It would be considerably dearer than direct shipping.
        
        Consider the 360m wharf with 25m draft China has built in Luganville, Vanuatu. Way bigger than is needed, and sold to the Vanuatu Government on the basis it would attract cruise ships and container trans-shipping. Neither traffic is near expectations, and the Vanuatu Government is left with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of debt to China.
        
        There is a second aspect. The wharf built in Luganville is big enough to dock an aircraft-carrier. Would a large port in northern New Zealand financed by Chinese debt finance also be big enough to dock a carrier, as well as put a debt yoke around New Zealand’s neck?

    Jian Yang has recently promoted by National. (despite everything known about his strong CCP connections- its because of his CCP connections) He will be cabinet if National wins. That means CCP has direct access to what happens in a NZ cabinet.

    CCP purchase power, influence, access to assets, and control. One charged by SFO was a National possible MP candidate.
    
    I dunno but if the CCP had a 50 year plan to make NZ a vassal then this is how they would start. By buying key NZ players / institutions.

  The IOC are working on new standards to try and avoid lawsuits and mass defections from Olympic sports such as weightlifting, due to be issued before July.
  
  Right now, the measurement of testosterone to “qualify” you as a woman is no more than 10 nanomoles per litre for a continuous period of 12 months. The average range for women is between 0.12 and 1.79 nmol/l.
  
  So, Mr Hubbard can legally have more than 5 and a half times the top end of the average female levels of testosterone, without even mentioning the physiological advantages he gets from being a biological male, and still be able to compete at the Olympics, against biological females (the only kind).
  
  The IOC is supposed to be lowering that to 5 nmol/l, as the IAAF has tried to do, but that’s still almost 3 times the naturally-occurring level.
  
  The IOC says that “the right to participate in sport is a universal human right” and I agree. So why can’t Rafa play in the Women’s French Open as well as the Men’s? The right to participate in sport is fine, as long as you’re competing like for like. Let all the poor gender dysphorics, and cheats, have their own competition at the Paralympics, well out of view of normal people, and they can set records, and beat each other up, to their hearts’ content.

Looks like the Government isn’t giving clear messages to folks about what to do if they come down with Flu/Covid-19 symptoms

Clearly Hospitals and Doctor surgeries do not want their waiting rooms filled up with coughing, sneezing, sniffling patients, but patients will still want some advice/ treatment.

Might be time to get some clear messages out to the public of what to do.

  In this case I think the hospitals are correct. Most people who have these symptoms will have regular influenza. In some cases they will just have a cold.

    Agreed. The initial symptoms of Covid-19 sound like they’re fairly generic cold/flu stuff. Unless an individual has some additional risk-factor (recently traveled to a hotspot, or had contact with somebody known to be infected) testing would be a waste of resources.

      There’s the shortness of breath symptom, rare with flu, but very common with COVID-19 cases because that virus attacks lung tissue. Given the potential for spread, anyone suffering from shortness of breath should also be tested, presuming that we have more than a few dozen testing kits available.

    I had influenza once, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Couldn’t get out of bed, thought I might be dying, and felt so bad that I didn’t care if I did die.

      That is quite correct. I have had flu just once. It was a week of the purest misery, and I lost 8kg from an already lean frame.
      
      Could do with losing 8kg nowadays, but I don’t think I’d want to do it by influenza.

      Agree totally. I roll my eyes when people say they have the flu. I had influenza in 2001. I remember being unsure whether I’d make it home from work. Crashed into bed. Off work for 3 weeks.
      
      Ever since I have got the flu jab every year.
      
      Key message :if you get influenza you will be in no doubt and you will not be going to work.

        I was unlucky enough to have the flu jab AND get the flu. Not quite as serious sounding as some of those above, but a full week off work which is worse downtime than keyhole surgery.
        
        Unfortunately that’s always a risk as the annual flu vaccine covers somewhere between 40 – 90% of the current flu strains around. They make up the vaccine based on the most prevalent varieties at the time, but that is typically around 6 months before the jab is administered and the prevalence can vary quite a bit.
        
        Also seen a article to the effect that the most reliable way to diagnose a COVID-19 infection is a full lung scan as the damage/inflammation to the lungs is quite distinctive and diagnostic. NZ won’t have the capacity for doing large numbers of these.

    Can we just agree on the hierarchy of severity of these types of illness?
    
    Starting at the bottom of the range, there is:
    
    1. The common cold – keep hydrated, have plenty of tissues on hand, drink hot lemon honeys. You’ll be fine in a couple of days.
    
    2. Influenza – this is way more serious. The recovery method is much the same, but add lots of paracetomol to keep the fever down, and stay home for at least a week.
    
    3. Coronavirus spectrum – very serious, often fatal. Self-isolation or quarantine, watch out for this one. Avoid cruise ships like the plague. Yes, the plague.
    
    4. Man-flu – the most debilitating, painful, sympathy-inducing, crippling, serious disease known to human-kind (thanks Justin). Panic buy at the supermarket, rally the troops, get the family around, this could be it.

  The media seem to be giving conflicting reports on the virus. Some stories point out the new number of infections and the fight, etc, and then we get this one from Newshub –

  Professor David Murdoch, Otago University dean and infection specialist told Newshub it isn’t much different to having a winter cold.

    Do the math – let’s say that only 10% of those inflicted need hospitalization (i.e., most, say 80%, have a bad cold, another 10% are more serious than that but don’t require a hospital). For every 10,000 infected, you need another 1000 hospital beds. If only 5% needed hospitalization, you still need 500 beds.
    
    That’s why even though we might not be able to keep it out of the country completely, avoiding a tsunami of cases is important.

  The govt is sleeping at the wheel. It seems we’re doing what the Americans have been doing by only testing people who meet a narrow set of criteria, i.e. returning from known hotspots, been in direct contact with people who had been confirmed to be infected, showing symptoms of the infection, etc.
  
  Well, the USA is looking like the next hotspot with confirmed community transmissions in the Washington state.
  
  We should learn from Singapore, test, test, test, and isolate, and they have it well under control.
  
  Reading a Twitter thread the Americans are freaking out and blaming the CDC and Trump.
  
  This potential mishandling of covid-19 could well be the undoing of Trump in the coming election. Now, imagine if Sanders wins the primary…

I assume the owners of these publication are willing to let them sink in a woke swamp because even the ‘virus scare’ has seen the piles left unsold. My local cafe had a copy of the Saturday Dom lying unread, but which a decade ago would have been snatched by the first customer. Yes, the mobile has taken over and reading a paper at the cafe table with other friends was certainly rude; nothing has changed.

  We’re in this situation because NZME, the owners of Radio Sport, chose two weeks ago to break off negotiations with New Zealand Cricket for future radio commentary of cricket in New Zealand. With the test match ending yesterday, the reality has sunk in for thousands of cricket tragics that we may have heard the last radio coverage of the game we love, and the likes of Waddle and Jeremy Coney may have called their last test match.
  
  I grew up with the radio tuned to Sports Roundup during the summer. I’m now 64 and my passion for cricket goes back a long way. I simply cannot imagine not contemplate a summer without cricket on the radio. It was also the last test match for the Sky Sport commentary team, with Sky having lost the rights for cricket coverage in New Zealand to Spark.
  
  I hope David White and his colleagues at New Zealand Cricket can get the radio coverage issue resolved, and soon. If they don’t, they will face a massive backlash from the cricket community.

    We have Sky, mainly for the sport – cricket, rugby, league and cycling mainly . Now New Zealand cricket is gone – but not overseas coverage – does NZ Cricket expect that cricket followers will now sign up for 2 fee paying broadcasters.
    Sorry, not I. Managed to survive quite nicely without seeing all the games of the Rugby World Cup and I notice now that my enjoyment of rugby has quite diminished.

        Agree Projectman. I believe South African Rugby will go with the Northern Hemisphere outfit. Sad really but not unexpected. There is more scope for their players there and the financial rewards are greater.
        I am getting tired of people telling me that NZ’s rugby interests should be in fostering a Southern Hemisphere outfit which includes Pacific Island teams. To that, I say “what for?”. “What are our players going to learn from playing Islanders in their home countries?”
        Who is going to pay for the PI teams? I don’t believe we should and there is insufficient sponsorship money in PI nations to support their teams in a Southern Hemisphere competition.
        In addition, we will have the problem with Pacific Islanders wanting to switch between being Nationalistic and playing for the highest bidder, not to mention the problems that would occur with those born and schooled here wanting to switch between being loyal to a country where their parents may have been born and also wanting to play for the ABs because they are NZ citizens.
        End of my rant on the subject.

    NZ Cricket – another self serving money making outfit to whom the fans don’t matter.
    Lots of life long cricket followers, who have supported local, national and international teams through thick and thin over many years, will now not be able to access their sport and the entertainment it brings.
    Many elderly and isolated people (socially and by distance) will probably never go to a game again but they could still take part by watching the whole thing on tv or listening to the radio.
    Yes, they have to pay for sky and many will have had to budget for that.
    But just many will not have access to live streaming – even if they know what that is and how to get it.
    Shame on NZ Cricket. Fans don’t matter any more.

      The problem NZ Cricket has is that they can’t compete with the various T20 tournaments.
      Neil Wagner is #2 ranked test bowler in the world, but only plays maybe one game/month on average plus domestic games.
      I bet he doesn’t earn as much as Mitch McClennahan who gets whacked around every week these days, but still gets a run in some lucrative T20 tournaments.
      Rugby has a similar problem.

    Millions and millions were going to die by 2000 because of famine.

    So what has happened?
    
    Large parts of N America have been experiencing their worst snow for decades, famine has virtually disappeared (except in war zones where access to food is used as a weapon) and oil reserves are higher now than they have ever been.

With both Klobucher and Buttigeig having dropped out, Super Tuesday will be interesting. Biden will presumably pick up the majority of their former supporters, and is the clear choice for moderates who think Sanders is unelectible.

As somebody who wants to see Orange Donny out of the White House, I have mixed views on this. On one hand Biden is vastly preferable to Sanders, on both policy and in having a better chance of defeating Trump. But on the other hand he comes with some significant electoral baggage, and IMO either Klobuchar or Buttigeig would have been better choices.

But that’s moot now. Fingers crossed for a relatively orderly nominating process, with Democrats rallying around Biden with a minimum of fuss.

This is a story of a con job perpetuated on the NZ public and a school community.

Most of you will remember the fanfare given to the announcement by Robbo at last year’s Labour Party conference about investing $400mill into school building programmes. Within days a list of schools was published and how much they would be allocated. To say I was sceptical about was going to be delivered, is to put matters mildly. Because amongst the list was a school build job that I know a bit about. The school in question was allocated a little over $50k.

Now we have to go back in time in our little tale, to the winter of 2015. This was a wet winter when a few mice/rats had managed to create some holes in the walls and ceilings of the two class rooms. During investigations by pest control, it was found that our four legged friends had exposed some asbestos, so Min of Education contractors were called in over the next holidays. They dily patched the holes and said all would be ok until 1. The classrooms were replaced and 2. The mice/rats made no more holes.

So, the principal and the Board Chair duly begin talks with the Min of Education, who agreed the buildings needed replacement. The quoted price in late 2015 was a little over $50k (sound familiar?). At a board meeting in Feb 2016, when reporting on building progress, the principal advised that they were getting the run around by the Min of Education, and indeed matters had stalled. So after the meeting, I made an offer to the principal to fast track matters by arranging a meeting with our local MP and Nikki Kaye (the Min of Education at the time). She declined my offer and said she would rather handle matters herself (she is a sociopath and wanted her legacies and the new classrooms would be part of it).

The 2017 election duly happened, there was a change of govt happened and the said school is Decile 9 and in an electorate where Labour has no chance of winning anything. So nothing happened regarding the new buildings except stories that could have been written by political spin merchants. This was until last November and suddenly the school was top of the list.

In January, the buildings were pulled down 1 week after contractors started working on site (remember the buildings had asbestos). Since then the contractors have been preparing the site.

They have been preparing the site for the new Prefab classrooms and toilets. The prefab will then be fitted out.
This thrn answered partially how they kept the cost cost budget to $50k, the second way they have kept the budget to $50k has been to reduce the boys and girls toilets by 33%. That is there will be two toilets for the boys and 2 for the girls. This lack of facilities in the school, that in recent years has had up to 80 students on the roll and operates on tank and biological septic sewerage systems may cause something of a health and safety issue.

Basically, the longterm educational needs of primary school children in our area has been sacrificed by political expediency and expediency of a principal. Thank you both Robbo and the principal for something that will lead to the need to further capital expenditure in the future.

  He said nothing of the sort. What he said was a hoax was the media’s criticism of his preparedness. They said he hadn’t done enough and had taken funding from the CDC. THAT is what Trump was calling the hoax. Even Facebook media checkers are calling BS on the story.

  When looking at the entirety of Trump’s remarks, it appears the “new hoax” comment refers to the alleged Democratic “politicizing” of his response to the coronavirus threat – not the coronavirus itself. The Hill, the Daily Beast and Slate, among other outlets, reported that the “hoax” comment was talking about Democratic criticism.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT – CORONAVIRUS
Last evening dining out with friends, one of their uncles, who’s graduated with a master’s degree and who worked in Shenzhen Hospital (Guangdong Province, China) sent him the following notes on Coronavirus for guidance:
1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold
2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of just 26/27 degrees. It hates the Sun.
4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.
5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours – so if you come into contact with any metal surface – wash your hands as soon as you can with a bacterial soap.
6. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent will kill it.
7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink liquids with ice.
8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but – a lot can happen during that time – you can rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.
9. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.
10. Can’t emphasise enough – drink plenty of water!
THE SYMPTOMS
1. It will first infect the throat, so you’ll have a sore throat lasting 3/4 days
2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days further.
3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like you’re drowning. It’s imperative you then seek immediate attention.

If a member state doesn’t adhere to the Universal Human Rights code then their voting and committee sitting rights are rescinded until they comply.

That also means the Security Council members both permanent and temporary can’t sit and vote there.

New Zealand has been exposed to the coronavirus, CINDY-19, precisely because of the Labour-led government’s incompetence.

An Iranian bloke so sick with CINDY-19 he had to actually be carried through Auckland airport wasn’t tested despite being obviously infected.

Here’s the thing.

The very next day Jacinda Ardern and David Clark went on television and radio and stated that despite this, NZ’s border screening is robust, AND NO-ONE IN THE MEDIA CHALLENGED THAT ASSERTION.

The video at the link below is one of two things that may change some minds about whether New Zealand police should be routinely armed with pistols.

The first point is the continuing denigration of legitimate firearms ownership while gangs have a swarm of do-gooders out to make prison life for gangsters more fleeting and more comfortable. Senior police seem to be leading the clampdown on law-abiding firearms owners, while gangs increasingly shoot it out with illegal guns.

The second is the link below to a video of American police shooting a rail user for a minor infringement. The gun was fired by a black police woman, so there will be no riots. Can we trust the people now being recruited by the police?

Apropos the first point, we have biosecurity officials going after the country’s biggest gun retailer for allegedly unloading containers without meeting biosecurity rules.

It would be nice to know whether other, non-firearms, importers have also been charged over such infringements, so we can be assured that this isn’t the Leftist Establishment taking another pot shot at the pro-gun community, perhaps with this year’s election in mind.

    It is, reputedly, a top adviser to Khamenei that’s died, not just any old adviser. So we’re not talking about someone who has once a month meetings with him a room full of other people and seated some distance from him. Presumably the adviser who has died has frequent close meetings with Khamenei and there is, one presumes, a good chance that he has had such a meeting with Khamenei while infected.
    
    So, there is a reasonable chance that Khamenei may now be infected himself. And age is a risk factor….

I say bullshit.

I own a few firearms and also store a couple for family members as I have a large firearms locker.

Currently my firearms are not on the voluntary register as I do not believe the police or government cannot keep the info safe.

If it becomes compulsory then I will register them so can someone please explain to me how that will stop someone from stealing these and using them on themselves or others.

How does the register stop me from using the firearm on myself?

The woke plan to denude Auckland of all the trees on its volcanic cones in order to plant all native trees.

At a time when we’re in danger of losing the iconic kauri from die back, funding has not been made available to combat it. Yet millions of dollars are earmarked to be spent removing huge numbers of exotics like oak trees, olive trees, cherry trees and Morton Bay figs from Auckland’s volcanic cones.

The majority are not diseased, dangerous or even ‘pest’ species; instead they have been classified as inappropriate by the Topuna Maunga Authority. The TMA are a statutory authority established under the collective redress act, composed 50/50 of representatives from Maori and the Auckland City Council, plus one crown representative. They intend to undertake a cultural restoration of the maunga, part of which entails replanting each cone with native plants, shrubs and trees. Whilst this is a laudable plan, the destruction of the existing forest canopy along with its ecosystem is harder to appreciate.

Using helicopters and cranes the TMA will denude Auckland’s maunga of non- indigenous greenery, leaving behind a multitude of plastic pots placed on top of the ground, containing native grasses, shrubs and trees. Perched on steep volcanic cones in the scorching sun, attrition would be high amongst the plants in the type of dry, hot conditions we are currently experiencing. It is known that succession planting practices can involve establishing native vegetation under the shade and shelter of existing vegetation and in fact this is already happening naturally on the maunga. You only have to look at Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill to realise how difficult it is to grow a tree on a bare volcanic cone. More than $20,000 is being spent in the hope of having a single native tree survive to replace the hardy old Monterey Pine which stood for 125 years.

Removing the majority of mature exotic trees is detrimental not only to the native birds, insects and reptiles which exist on the maunga but also to the public enjoyment of these spaces. It may be decades before the pleasant green covering of the maunga returns. A whole generation of children could miss out on the enjoyment of sitting under a shady giant on a hot summer’s day, listening to the native bird calls or walking the trails in the dappled light of a grove of trees.
Sadly, all of this destruction will be generously funded by you, the ratepayer, to the tune of around $80 million until mid-2020 when they are able to apply for more funding.

  These folks insisting on destroying a forest ecosystem to replace it with an open weed-infested shrubland for the next 20-50 years should hang their heads in shame.
  
  They should be using the shade/shelter /forest soil of the mature trees to provide a clement environment for the young natives…. light-demanding natives could be placed around the edge of the established trees and shade-tolerant natives such as tawa, taraire, kohekohe, puriri, kahikatea, etc planted within the mature stands.
  
  As the natives grow up toward the canopy, the mature trees could be individually felled or poisoned.
  
  This way, the forest soil, litter layers are saved; the n
  young natives aren’t exposed to open conditions…

    NZ has few pioneer tree species… ie most of our native trees are adapted to starting life within a closed/sheltered environment.
    
    Kanuka, pohutukawa, totara can act as pioneer trees… but they’re not much cop coping with an suffocating sward of exotic grasses or a scramble of bramble, japanese honeysuckle, wandering jew, asparagus fern, climbing dock, moth plant, etc,etc….

Crew need to set up a water hose to spray water over them, just to keep them wet and cold and unable to have hot food and coffee! Make sure they get no sleep as well! Don’t need to hose them off with a fire hose, just wet and cold and they will leave!
