      My pick for announcement is the day after both Winston and Jacinda leave NZ, to maximize ‘no comment’ time in media while they are away. But I think this will backfire with the void being filled by the not so friendly media.

        It amazes me that the two most senior people in the COL are out of the country at the same time. No competent business would do such a thing unless absolutely necessary – neither trip is that important that it can’t be delayed, one can only speculate on the reasons for this. Are they totally inept? I don’t think so, therefore they are worried / scared of something. Ihumatao would be the obvious suspect, but being out of town could well backfire horribly in that case. The fact they have no safe pair of hands to leave in charge makes it even more interesting. What other skeletons could pop out fro under the carpet?

Recently Pres Trump commuted the sentences of a number of people including former Democrat governor Rod Bloagojevich. As if on cue liberal commentators decried the lawlessness of Pres Trump and he was wrecking the justice system with all these unprecedented pardons and commutations.

As many Kiwi blog readers know, the liberal media is wildly partisan and now doesn’t even pretend to hide its contempt for Pres Trump. So there is an incredible double standard regarding the reporting on this matter.

Kiwi blog readers would not be surprised to find out that Pres Obama pardoned or commuted the sentences of many criminals, including high profile traitor to his country private Manning, now known as Chelsea Manning.

However when Pres Obama pardoned or commuted the sentences of 1,927 people the liberal media felt no alarm that justice was in jeopardy. Pres Trump during his term has pardoned or commuted the sentences of 26 people. Apparently according to the liberal media that is a threat to the very fabric of justice in America. 🙂

  Now? They never hid it. Made me actually check (i.e. listen to) what Trump really said when they made outrageous claims against him. And I found they were deliberately misinterpreting and lying, e.g. to pretend he was ‘racist’ for not wanting open borders.

  Yes, and in the same interview she tried to blame National (an opposition party) for the scheme being on the verge of falling over. She wouldn’t blame Winstone 1st and his party (who are members of the CoL) for their sudden change of direction on the policy.
  
  Add to that Ron Mark suggesting NZF may reneg on phase 2 of the gun laws.
  
  All this for NZF to remain relevant to its perceived rural/provincial voter base. Something I seriously question.

There is an opinion piece in Stuff about why police should not be armed:

It is by a Lana Hart whose name did not ring a bell so I looked at the end for any bio information – there was none. I googled her and that turned up other articles and a Linkedin entry which proclaimed:
“With a background in human rights, diversity and migrant issues, and not-for-profit management, I am looking for work in a senior management role within a not-for-profit environment.”
Apart from listing a few previous jobs there is nothing about her. I assume she is the same Lana Hart that writes opinion pieces.
Why should anyone take notice of her opinions when her background, qualifications etc are largely unknown.

  I don’t know how Stuff works in this regard, peterwn, perhaps someone else does. Perhaps Stuff solicits Opinion pieces, or perhaps people just submit them and Stuff selects some to publish. If it’s the latter, then I imagine that Stuff probably weighs various factors into that decision, including the piece’s ability to grab attention (as it has yours, in that case negatively) and generate “clicks”. Some here will go and read her opinions just because you have posted about it on KB.
  
  You needn’t take her comments seriously, of course, it is only an “opinion” piece – more like a Letter to the Editor, I guess.

    There are far too many ‘opinion’ pieces in the newspapers now. I buy a newspaper to read about the news, not someone else’s opinion of it.
    
    I have stopped reading opinion pieces, because frankly, they are just a waste of time, or worse, both a waste of time and a party political broadcast for the woke Left. And I include in that paid opinion pieces by reporters (and the business and economics reporters too) that the paper’s publish on a regular basis.
    
    Reading opinions from many of the so-called economic/ business reporters, frankly you’d be better of reading the daily horoscope. Their predicative value of what the future holds amounts to the same thing.

      BUT she then said she will continue to allow political opinion pieces by subscribers to remain.
      What a contradiction – I will not do it – but I will allow others to do it.

  Since my opinion is based on far more solid footing than hers.
  Education to university, in Science.
  Experience in building/developing a branch of a medium sized company (with multiple branches)
  Starting my own small business, from scratch (with almost no start up funding)
  Coping with an almost immobile wife who has PAH and congestive heart failure (matter of time, it’s getting worse).
  Here are a smattering of my “opinions”.
  
  Bring back the death penalty for serious crime
  Do not legalize cannabis for recreational use.
  Fine parents for taking their kids out of school for their own entertainment/ cheap holidays.
  Fine parents for truant kids.
  Force councils to deal with the basics (local roads, water, sewage etc) BEFORE they spend OUR money on glory projects.
  Reduce business tax
  Reduce business compliance cost.
  That’s just a few.

    Some Iranians are saying that the outbreak there is much worse than the official numbers are saying and so too is the death rate and the number of severe cases requiring hospital treatment.
    
    Reports on how it got to Iran (Qom) are also few and far between and that is the same for the outbreak in Northern Italy. Neither regions are exactly a magnet for trade and travel to and from China!

        True, they do. But if it was just Chinese tourists who had spread the virus I would expect to see a lot more cases and clusters in the major tourism centres of Italy like Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan etc., and the hotels therein where most Chinese go, and they aren’t there. So I don’t think Chinese tourism provides the link between the outbreak in China and the outbreak in Northern Itlay (Veneto and Lombardy) to explain it??? Maybe it was an Italian from that area who had been to China? Who knows, it will be interesting to see if they ever find out.
        
        But it is deeply troubling because this has spread silently without people knowing, and now ‘suddenly’ we are getting a lot of people falling sick. And some have died. Given the incubation period of the virus the spread has clearly being going on for some time. Could the same thing happen here? I fear it might.

        Italy has thousands of Chinese owned and operated businesses in Italy. Many but not all in the north around Milan. They are factories and workshops in the garment and fashion accessories business, notably handbags, retailing with the legitimate Made in Italy label.
        
        Some are massive and workers live and work on site, mainly separate from the locals.
        
        Unsurprising if any infection spreads.

      Persian reporter in USA had medical sources in Iran telling him 27 dead 4 days ago, they have no ability to test outside of Tehran. Outside of (bullshitting) China there are about 100x as many infected as dead, so Iran has 1000’s-10’s of thousands infected already – and it is now known to have spread from Iran to other countries.   Maggy as long as governments keep the travel bans in place, you have a much greater chance of getting run over crossing the road with your eyes shut than catching this in NZ.
  Latest figures show the Diamond Princess is still the hot bed of the disease outside China.57 new cases taking it to 691 but only 2 deaths.
  Italy and Iran are a speck on the horizon in comparison.
  I suspect South Korea was related to Diamond Princess, it is looking much worse than anywhere except China.
  Self quarantine is bullshit, bit like watching border force and the food declarations, just piss and wind for many.
  Australia has done really well considering it has now repatriated hundreds including kiwi’s and has no deaths and no spread. Christmas Island was a great move by authorities.
  It is in 33 countries, just 23 deaths in 8 countries leaving China out. The travel bans are working it is contained, I would have no hesitation going to any country with a good health system, most probably steer clear of third world, China, Japan, and South Korea for a few more weeks. Cruises only go alacarte.
  Due to go to Japan in May would think it will be like sars, well and truly forgotten by then.
  If you are over 60 consider the pneumonia injection, under 60 and healthy, just keep travelling.
  This is killing just 2% and all older sick people.
  Buy up on computers also they are doubling in price.

    I doubt it will be like SARS and peter out that quickly. It spreads far, far more readily than SARS.
    
    And not all of those dying are older and sicker. Just as a well known example, the Doctor who first alerted people to the outbreak dies from it, he was in his 40’s. I don’t know about you but I don’t really call that age “older”. There’s a recent study of people who were seriously ill with COVID-19, about 52 people in the study. Of those, 6 were < 30 and 3 died. The rates tended to get worse in the older cohorts, sure, but not dramatically so although there were far more people in the older age brackets included. So older people get sicker, but if you get it bad, people of all ages die.
    
    We don't want to get panicky about this, but it certainly has the potential to be devastating. The measures needed to contain it too are likely to be economically damaging as well.

      It’s like a severe flu. If it comes here, it will mostly affect those with low functioning immune systems who will require hospital care for the resulting pneumonia (oxygen etc, some ICU) and a few might die, but most will recover.
      This virus is spread BEFORE the donor host becomes symptomatic, and drifts in the atmosphere unlike those spread by droplet (coughs and sneezes) infection only.

    The latest figures are 763 cases in South Korea, and 691 associated with the Sea Princess. The South Korea numbers are climbing rapidly as are those in Italy, 157, although I think the Italians have a good chance to get on top of theirs. Although without knowing the source of the virus in Italy (patient zero) and being able to trace their contacts and movements since they became infected or came to Italy that may not prove to be the case.

  I think that is prudent, Maggy and I have done the same. It’s not about panicking, it’s about being prepared in exactly the same that most of us are supposed to have emergency kits with enough food and water in them to keep us going for 3-5 days in the event of a natural disaster. That’s not about panicking either, but it is a prudent thing to do. We hope we never need to use them, but an earthquake or some other natural disaster could happen.
  
  It’s the same with this.
  
  We hope an outbreak won’t happen here, but just in case it does, having some level of preparedness is just the smart thing to do.
  
  We don’t accept the argument that the chances of a big earthquake or volcanic eruption, or flood are so small that it’s not worth worrying about so don’t even bother having an emergency kit or supplies, and we shouldn’t accept similar reasoning about this potential pandemic either.

Obviously Talleys Fishing Company don’t fish for Lobster in Otago waters.
NZ First and the Greenswith Labour helped put a stop to make part of the Kermadec Ocean a marine Sanctuary to protect from Fishing Industry and there Trawlers. But we have the Government wanting to hit Commercial Fisherman in the pocket some estimates up to 3 million dollars a year fishing for lobster.
The Government is inching forward with a plan to create six marine reserves off the south west coast of Otago covering nearly 1300sqare kilometers.

I read that one of XR’s latest recruits, the teenage thug Greta Thunberg is off to Bristol UK to assist some children in wagging school on a Friday.

She tweeted she was “heading for the UK” and was “looking forward” to joining strikers on College Green in the city centre on Friday morning.
Bristol Youth Strike for Climate (BYS4C) said it was “honoured to be welcoming” the 17-year-old.

Ms Thunberg, who is expected to travel by train, (one of those vehicles made from the nasty coal she demands the world stops using) is due to make a speech before joining a samba band-accompanied march.

Izzy Smitheson, from BYS4C, said Ms Thunberg had contacted the group because she “wanted to strike with us”.

Ms Smitheson, 17, said: “We didn’t have a strike planned, so it’s a lot of last-minute organisation.

Oh what a nuisance, the poor girl is now rushing around telling all her friends “No school next Friday, Greta’s coming.”

I’ve got a message for kids who want to strike for whatever.
Do it in your own time, Saturday or Sunday.

Does anyone know if the disgraced Member of Parliament for Botany has shut up shop and resigned yet? His billboards are still up around the place so presumably he hasn’t. With just the one staff member in his electorate office, and an ongoing investigation into his alleged misconduct, he can hardly provide constituent services to a high standard and of course he’s needs time to prepare his defence for the serious criminal charges he’s facing from the SFO. Someone capable of feeling shame would have already resigned. You can also bet that given his [alleged] serious character flaws, there’s no doubt more negative publicity of an embarrassing nature to hit the news this year. Chris Luxon may end up winning in September in the biggest electoral landslide in New Zealand political history.

Elected local government has at this point failed as a model for administering infrastructure. Death of local media and community involvement for most means total ignorance come election times. Only people who vote (and coordinate as a block) are loopy left and other single issue zealots, so they dominate. Really needs to be taken out of hands of fringes and politicians who only care about 3 year electoral horizon and self promotion.

Adrian Orr seems to be asking the Government for a much as 30 per cent more to fund the Reserve Bank.

Michael Reddell, at his blog, Croaking Cassandra, questions, the bank’s spending. He also questions what the bank’s new Monetary Policy Committee is contributing.

Reddell writes:

“… the evidence mounts for how undisciplined the bank is in the use of the resources it already case. There was the million dollars for the Maori strategy, or the trips to international climate change meetings (and resources devoted domestically to such issues, for which the bank has no particular responsibility) and there is the sense of a proliferation of staff in the communications/PR areas of the Bank.”

  The same turd was involved with killing a liquor store owner.

Obama-era whistleblower who was engaged to be married found dead on the side of the road with “self inflicted” wound….

Upon their arrival, they located and identified 66-year-old Philip Haney, who was deceased and appeared to have suffered a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound.       In the first video the interviewee – Dr. Anthony Fauci from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases – goes through the decisionmaking to bring people off the ship, as well as some insight into US testing capability. He notes that while the developed world will be OK in identifying and managing cases, the real weak link is where other nations either dont have the systems capable of handling an outbreak, or even identifying an outbreak, or where those systems break down.
      
      ………for that type of sentiment I find myself thinking that once it is anywhere in the Middle East, or once it lobs into an environment where cash strapped governments have pared back health spending over any length of time, then we have issues.
      
      The second video has a Dr Michael Osterholm, from the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. He makes the one true point we need to know. ‘we need to get away from this notion of containment’, ‘it is like trying to stop the wind’ and rightly notes that it will follow the pattern of any other influenza outbreak.
      
      To my mind the efforts to ‘lock down’ the outbreak in China may have bought us (and the rest of the world) time, and little more. From here it will be a race to make sure we have our systems working OK and have suitable supplies of drugs etc onshore when needed. Though the Education and Real Estate lobby – not to mention both sides of mainstream politics – pushing for the early entrance of lots of students from China, will presumably cut that reaction time down.

Using data for 254 US metropolitan areas, we show that housing supply elasticities have fallen markedly in recent years. Consistent with this, we find that monetary policy shocks have a stronger effect on house prices during the recent recovery than the previous boom. At the same time, building permits respond less. Finally, we find that housing supply elasticities have declined more in areas where land-use regulation has tightened the most, and in areas that experienced the sharpest housing busts.
