Come on people. It is one thing killing yourself but it is quite another endangering the lives of other people.

PLBs are cheap: $400, or hire one for $40 a week.

The same goes for fuckwit boaties that go out wearing a swannie and white gumboots.

  A few years ago a tramper from England bought his British PLB to NZ and had cause to use it. He had cause to use it and it alerted British authorities who were surprised the location was ‘down under’. Having confirmed from given contact numbers that the guy was in NZ, they notified NZ Search and Rescue and there was a happy ending. PLB takes the ‘Search’ out of ‘Search and Rescue’.

  I wear gumboots on my boat – you can always kick them off. Swannie? nope. Also have VHF and a Coastguard member with the boat and number registered. 46 years on the harbour and never had to call the coastguard.
  But yes, too many solo and unexperienced go into the bush and get lost. Ha! lost in NZ is a joke – follow the water

    I remember hearing the story of a girl who was the sole survivor of a plane crash. She came across a river and recalled her father telling her that if you follow a river down a hill you will always come to a village. So she did and was saved (after a dreadful experience). Lesson here is, take your kiddies out for a walk and teach them this stuff. They won’t learn it at school.

  Generally what you say is correct….in this case however,it appears she was swept away down a ” creek”…in which case ( unless one is washed up on a rock etc) one would not get the chance to activate the PLB. ie you have to be alive to use it?

    A lot of foreign trampers who come here have no idea of the conditions that NZ has or how it can change in 5 minutes. Most of them have never waded in water deeper than their knees before so no walking downstream is NOT the way if you are lost. It is sit still and make yourself comfortable and visible and wait for the cavalry to arrive.
    
    The latest thing is a “recco tag” which is a little passive electronic thing (highly tech savy description) that is sewn into your pack/jacket/ whatever when its made. You get lost and a helicopter flies about with a device transmitting a signal which excites the tag and locates you. Not as good as a PLB but you dont need to do anything for it to work, ie: they find you even if you are dead. Developed for finding people after avalanches .

    I do a bit of solo tramping. I always carry a beacon. I am not a good swimmer so am conservative about crossing rivers. Many inexperienced people don’t understand the power of moving water. If it is fast flowing anything above half way betwen your feet and your knees can knock you off your feet. And FFS don’t ever take your boots off to cross a river.
    
    Trampers generally only die in one of three ways. Drowning, hyperthermia or falling. Be aware of that, and be conservative. Don’t over estimate your ability.

      Best $900 I spent was a satphone. Use it as a backup for SSB when ocen cruising also when delivering yachye that have no ssb. great when tramping as even when your minutes run out you can call any of the emergency services and text with GPS co ordinates to 3 decimals automatically added to your text.

    Correct. It’s very easy to become disorientated in our bush. It has happened to me on the hills behind Eastbourne. Just stray a few metres off the track and you are lost.
    
    Fortunately for me, I was able to bush whack my way straight down the hill, and I found myself in someone’s garden.
    
    But it could have been different if I were in the back blocks.

  I’m guessing she took off her boots to cross a river? Not sure why else you would take them off. A PLB might be in the pack and not accessible if she was swept away. Brits don’t realise how dangerous our bush is. It’s not like forests in the UK.

  A few years ago I did some work for a client on how different groups in society perceive risk. The short answer is that people are hopeless at judging risk of injury and death. Classic example is parents who are scared that their children will get abducted walking to school. And on the weekend take them fishing in a small boat without a life jacket.

      Unfortunately the Coast Guard do not have policing powers.
      
      There is a requirement for one life jacket per person on the boat. Life jackets just be worn on small boats (and larger boats depending on the conditions).

        I’m a good swimmer, but each year I notice I’m not as strong (and as fast) as I once was.
        
        In my teens, I could swim 60-80 laps of a 30m pool without much effort; now I’d be buggered if I could do 30 laps non-stop.
        
        Out in the sea, cold water…sure I’d know how to survive for a few hours..but I’m not so sure I’d have the strength to swim through choppy seas or a strong surf back to land.

And what exactly do these weasel words from the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and sometime acting Prime Minister, Kelvin Davis actually achieve? How do they address the specific issues of the drought crisis in the far North? What stuff do they actually do? Policies, plans, commitments, concrete steps to manage the crisis, so that it doesn’t happen again, or at least is better planned for and managed.

Apparently Kelvin Davis, the local Maori MP for Te Tai Tokerau, is going to do nothing, suggest nothing, and propose nothing apart from that they all hold each others hands. How does that help? Where is and where does the water come from in that? The dams, new water sources, drought mitigation policies, water storage, forward planning for the next drought, infrastructure, council changes, where is it Kelvin? Everyone else is crying out for it, why aren’t you?

Do you want to know why Maori in Northland are in the shit to the extent they are, and not just over the drought but in general? It’s because their leaders really really suck. Kelvin Davies, Winston Peters, Shane Jones. The Three Stooges. It’s enough to make you weep.

Open gang warfare worsens in New Zealand, while the useless police minister, Nash, suggests it will help if National backs Labour’s Draconian anti-gun legislation.

The police seem merely to watch, no doubt on a tight leash of the anti-free-speech police chief who has led the drive against law-abiding sport-shooting citizens while criminal gangs surge in strength and now shoot it out.

The news media report a “gang summit” will try to sort matters out and they yet again trot out Canterbury University gang sociologist Jarrod Gilbert to argue that policies “beyond law and order” are needed to tackle the gang problem. In other words, don’t sweep up the trash.

This is a dream issue for National in election year. People are becoming frightened. Labour and the police, locked in a campaign against lawful gun-owning citizens, are virtually standing and watching the gang war.

Meanwhile, we have the media sucking up to liberal social scientists like Gilbert, and to the Howard League-type mob who would turn prisons into a free social-science universities for convicts. These extreme liberals play the media like violins while the national audience, in rising concern, eyes the concert- hall exits.

If Simon Bridges can’t make a political banquet of this, he’s useless.

        While not common it is one that has been used in NZ for many years and only a simplistic moron would choose to take it literally.

    However, the guy’s been posting comments about how members of parliament need to be killed. And subsequent to the March 15 thing, there’s a bit of paranoia about that.
    
    Say, for example, someone starts posting about how certain Labour MPs need to be killed on here. And someone takes offence and starts posting on The Standard about National MPs needing the same. And some damn fool goes and does something stupid. The shit is gonna well and truly hit the fan at that stage.
    
    So, a certain amount of moderation needs to be put in place and both KB and The Standard have done so, reasonably successfully, in that robust debate seems to happen on both sites.
    
    But I don’t see that so much on Facebook and Youtube. Perhaps its because they are US owned – I don’t know.
    
    So how do we deal with the potential for free speech to incite mad individuals?
    
    I guess we can say, well, free speech rules and its just collateral damage, but when it actually starts to affect us we get really worried about it.
    
    How would you all have treated this? What if it exploded into violence? Then how would you feel?

Anyhow why not do the proper thing and submit their findings of an alleged pre-Maori giant’s bone to scientific scrutiny like DNA testing ?

But, as the earth enters a cooling phase we can expect more extreme events as wind speeds will increase because of the enhanced pressure gradient between the poles and the tropics.     And seeing Antarctica is 14mil square Km ( as compared with a measly 9.5 for the USA,) I very much doubt that one temperature, at sea level or thereabout, far north of the mainland that sits at close to 3000m above sea level, in any way represents a catastrophic warming of the continent. Besides, there are many places in Antarctica that experience anomalous warm weather because of Fern winds. ( Adiabatic heating due to elevation changes). These have sweet Fuck all to do with CO2.       Stuffy doesn’t get it. If you pay people to produce babies, that’s what they will do.
      
      In an age where contraception and, yes, abortion are the best options for people who can’t properly look after children, there is simply no excuse for the state supporting ‘solo mothers’.
      
      An unemployment benefit and job training would be far more productive, with the message that if you choose to have a baby without being able to support it, the child will after a few weeks need to be in daycare while you are expected to find a job and become independent.

    It’s like we are back living a couple of hundred years ago when easy and effective contraception was not available or even heard of.
    Lots of children were born into poverty and parents struggled to feed, clothe and look after them. Many of these children were unwanted and abandoned but were conceived and born anyway.
    We still have this today- even though surely most people know how to access and use contraception.
    Oh but, contraception costs money and time going down to the chemists – money and time that could be spent on other things.
    Maybe a new free contraception campaign needs to start up.
    Why have more and more children born into poverty and violence? Some men and older women need to suspend their controlling ways and encourage young women to control their own lives – even if it means a bit less money from the welfare agencies.

        Contraception is at the tail end of ‘maternal culture’. It is my impression that many of the ‘beneficiary class’ give very little thought to the way they conduct themselves. They seem to follow on doing exactly what their parents did before them, which is after all what most children do.
        Many years ago when I was young and newly married it was accepted that you would bring your children up in the customs and manners that your parents instilled in you. (Back then, everyone was married, and children born to single mothers were usually adopted by childless married couples.)
        A common piece of advice was “if you don’t like the way your parents treated you, then do it differently” – which generally meant discipline methods, and permissions to do this or that at a certain age. But it could mean that you washed your hair on Saturday, and went to Sunday School. That you came straight home from school, and always ate all your vegetables before having dessert.
        Unfortunately, it seems that many parents now do not consider this – do young women ever consider that the way their family operated, that the unhappiness or abuse they suffered need not be passed on to their own children? That the partner who ill treats them can be left?
        That they have a personal integrity that allows them to say No, or Enough! That they CAN make their lives better for both themselves and their children.
        heir parents are failing them and their culture if abuse is seen and not stopped. If that is the norm, how can we expect young mothers to be better parents?

    Got less than half of it back because they claimed a payment in advance for 2020.
    However, it appears that the income that they taxed against, will not now eventuate until the end of the year. But they have the money, and I can manage as best I can (or not)as far as they are concerned.

Labour supporters should answer these questions before entering polling booths in September:
1 If you were building a house would you hire Phil Twyford to project manage it?;
2 If you were hiring a social worker to help reduce child poverty would you hire Jacinda Ardern when in 7 out of 9 measures of child poverty published by the statistics department things have got worse for New Zealand children?;
3 If you were appointing a Head teacher to your children’s school would you appoint Chris Hopkins when the educational achievements of our children have plummeted according to the OECD?;
4 Would you want David Clark to manage your local medical centre when there are 6,000 less elective surgeries each year under his watch?;
5 Would you want Stuart Nash to be head of your local neighbourhood watch committee when crime has sky rocketed under his watch?
6 Would you use Grant Robertson as your financial planner when New Zealand’s GDP growth rate has more than halved under his watch?

Lastly, bring all those questions altogether and ask yourself do you want to vote for a party that has gave us Kiwibuild, impoverished childrengrowth rate more than half? If you say yes to one or more of those questions vote Labour because you plainly want a government that gave us Kiwiblog, impoverished our children, ruined our children’s education, made it harder to have hip replacement operation, slowed down our our economy and made it more likely we’ll be burgled? If your answer is yes to one or more of these questions vote Labour again and give yourself a kick in the head.

Many people like the idea of a strong, younger female PM who smiles and is a good communicator, with empathy, and a mother. I’m not saying this is Jacinda, but compared with many that have gone before she is viewed by voters as a breathe of fresh air and a step in the right direction. Many believe she is perfect.

I believe this is why 17% of voters are undecided, they want a facsimile of Jacinda as PM, but not Labour’s policies.

If we assume Simon isn’t going anywhere, who could step up as this facsimile as a highly promoted Deputy Leader, or even co-leader of National?

I can’t stand Paula Bennett and I think if someone else took her place a lot would return to voting National.

Does the co-leader idea work as a strategy for National?

  Many people want their political leaders to have knowledge, experience and talent – not just a figurehead.
  If there is someone within the National Party, man, woman or other, who can do better than Bridges then they should step forward.
  What we don’t need is another shallow, celebrity influencer hip hopping around as Ms Ardern does.
  Does our government really need any more dumbing down?
  Ms Ardern was literally a man-made leader of convenience. Yes, she was parliamentary back-bencher for three terms prior, but she didn’t get her current position on any merit at all.

I opined on Thursday, after the revelation of NZF covertly photographing journalists, that the PM had 24 hours to distance herself from Winston Peters or she too would become entangled in the mess.

So check out what Henry Cooke from Stuff has written this morning under the headline Jacinda Ardern’s silence on Winston Peters is deafening:

Early this week Winston Peters playfully jabbed at my hand and suggested the police would soon be paying me a visit.

It was clearly a joke, and one that even made some sense in the context: I was asking about a referral to the police he has supposedly made over a series of media stories. For all of Peters’ bluster, he’s too canny to try and mess with police independence.

It’s also what everyone in the beltway would call typical Winston. Behaviour that dances on the line of acceptability and would probably not be kosher if a politician with less charisma tried it. But Peters can almost always smile, say “thankyouverymuch”, and stroll off happily.

However, there’s a difference between leeway for jokes and leeway for seriously unbecoming behaviour. And the prime minister has slipped this week from the usual kind of space people give Winston to be Winston into plain supplicancy.

Jacinda Ardern is yet to say anything at all about the fact the Electoral Commission made absolutely clear on Monday that the way NZ First was treating donations to its foundations was wrong.

Cooke then goes into some detail about alleged electoral funding irregularities. Then he comes to Thursday; read on:

This silence got even louder on Thursday when it became clear that NZ First had some kind of involvement in two covertly taken photographs of journalists reporting on the Foundation story, which found their way onto a right-wing blog. Peters told Magic Talk on Tuesday that “we took the photographs just to prove that’s the behaviour going on”, but later backtracked to say a supporter just happened to see the journalists and thought he or she should snap a photo.

Because of this shifting story, there is a muddle over exactly how involved NZ First and Peters are, a muddle that would best be sorted out by Ardern demanding a fuller explanation from Peters. Any level of involvement in this kind of tactic – clearly designed to intimidate journalists – is worth condemning, and you can bet that, if Ardern was in Opposition, she would manage it.

Instead she’s not commenting, saying it is a “matter for NZ First”, while her office notes that she speaks about ministerial decisions and comments, not about things said as party leader.

The thing is, the Cabinet Manual does have a section about ministers upholding and being seen to uphold “the highest ethical standards” at all times, not just when doing ministerial business. Ardern has all the ammo she needs to give Peters a dressing-down over this, but instead she defers. Things don’t have to be illegal to be wrong.

Worse, this rot of silence has also infected the Green Party, which, as a confidence and supply partner, has plenty of legitimate room to criticise such tactics. You don’t need to tear the Government up or demand that Peters is fired – you can just say what the journalists’ union said on Friday, that Peters needs to explain himself and apologise.

Instead the Greens just talk about how the law needs to be changed – which most people agree with, but isn’t the point. The topic at hand isn’t underhanded but lawful behaviour, it’s stuff that is potentially illegal – hence the police referral. The party should grow back its spine.

It is blindingly obvious why Ardern is so blind to Peters’ actions. He is not the kind of man to take a telling-off sitting down, and it would probably all get messier as Peters extracted some kind of utu for her daring to criticise him.

But she is the leader of this Government, and of a party that is vastly larger in both power and popularity. Her words set the standard of behaviour for ministers – she is in this sense the most powerful political pundit we have. It’s well past time she found that voice.

This is a stinging rebuke both to Ardern and to a lesser extent, to the Greens. It does nothing at all to lessen the perception that everyone in government dances to Winston Peters’ tune.

Helen Clark would have acted against Peters, as she did in 2008. So would John Key; just ask Richard Worth, or Pansy Wong, or Phil Heatley, or any of the National MP’s that Key “encouraged” to retire because they had no prospect of future promotion.

The media has given Jacinda Ardern a pretty easy run for two and a half years. This time however, her coalition partner has launched a strike against their profession, and because she hasn’t said or done anything of substance, the negative stories have started. Ardern has no one to blame (other than Peters) but herself.

  In this case we have the deputy leader of the country originally saying “we took the photographs”. Did he mean The Government or NZ First. Later changed to a member of the public who happened to know what the journalists looked like. This appears to look like journalists investigating possible corrupt practice in Government and then being put under surveillance by the same Government.

Deep Blue you over estimate fluff over stuff! Uncle Helen was more popular than the very well paid beneficiary who lives in a state house that ‘leads’ us. Uncle Helen was no oil painting, but unlike Ms Ardern could make a decision, didn’t tolerate incompetence, and was good for the economy. She was never on the cover of Vogue and did not suffer fools gladly. She had a huge brain and a massive work ethic. She and her successor got elected three times. Sir John didn’t get on the front cover of Vogue either.Ms Ardern hugs random strangers all too randomly. You know when she’s talking crap…… her eyes pop out of her head, and the teeth protrude towards you with a big smile. Never smile at a crocodile.

    The Maori corporations have been highly successful. It just a pity they don’t pay tax
    at the same rate as everyone else.
    But I believe that settlement had more to do with Wakefields dodgy land deals.

Hmm Discuss. I don’t like the reasons given, but the amount he had “breathlessly reported as 4 times the limit” is actually only twice the old limit before the fuckwits in goverment changed the rules. Was he intoxicated to the point he was completely unable to drive, ( some people can be well over the limit and still be fairly competent, while others are shitfaced after one drink). If I was stopped with that limit I would probably lose my job as a teacher. Would I be able to argue that a conviction would ruin my future?

  Frankly I don’t know why he is getting any kudos for coming out at all!??
  
  Basically he lived a lie for decades, covered up his true sexuality for what, career and other advantages?
  
  What about his poor wife who was deprived of a genuine authentic relationship for all those years that she might have had with an actual straight guy? And now presumably, her marriage will end through no fault of her own. Hasn’t he used and duped her as well for his own advantage? Where’s the honesty in that? I don’t think he has done anything that is worth celebrating at all. Nothing, and certainly nothing brave.
  
  I’d much rather celebrate all the gay men who were honest about themselves and who came out decades ago (yes, men of Schofield’s age who came out in the 70s and 80s) and have subsequently lived their lives as open, honest and out gay men, that is if Aids or religion’s prurient perverts didn’t kill them off first. That is integrity, that is honesty, that is bravery. No duped or used women there! Now that is what is worth celebrating.

The coronavirus outbreak in Singapore (the next worst affected country after China) is continuing to deteriorate with 67 cases now reported. If they are not able to contain it, and if cases do indeed double about every 5-6 days or so, there could well be around 500 cases there in about two weeks.

One to watch, as what happens in Singapore is more likely to reflect what will happen in a country like New Zealand should it establish itself here, rather than what is happening in China.
