Golriz Ghahraman, who purportedly escaped the evil regime in Iran to become our first refugee MP is now supporting that same regime in her comments regarding the death of Soleimani.
I did not hear her objections to Iran shooting down, a US drone patrolling in Iraq, bombing Saudi oil refineries to influence oil supply, hijacking a British tanker and holding the crew hostage or the attack on the US embassy and the killing of an American.
I guess her hatred of America out weighs the evil of the Iranian regime that supposedly forced her to flee her homeland, and yet, she has the arrogance to tell us how we should respond to our long term allies

        You are correct Mike re the Cole. Iran created Al-Qaeda’s Yemen network and provided training in the region via Hezbollah. So Iran, again, had its fingers deep in the pie.
        US is aggressively confronting a regime that sponsors terrorism that has resulted in American deaths. I’d say that was fair an reasonable.
        If you add actions by Hezbollah around the world, the list becomes very, very long.

        No, I don’t have to. Criticising US actions in the middle east as foolish does not mean I support a rigid theocracy in Iran, any more than commending such actions would make me a supporter of a rigid theocracy in Saudi Arabia.
        It is possible to believe that the US should withdraw from the middle east and that Iran should reform and cease supporting non-state belligerents in other conflicts.

  Quite few Iranians fle their country after the 1979 revolution, especially as it became clear that the Shah’s dictatorship had been replaced by a different form of anti-liberal repression – theocracy instead of autocracy.
  Refugees leaving Iran did not magically tranform into pepole who hate their country, still less people that are likely to side with the US’s role in the middle east.
  So it really is not a choice between supporting the evils of the regime in Iran, or supporting the agression of the US: both can be opposed.

That would be a distortion of the facts. Police in New South Wales released a statement disclosing that since Nov. 8, 2019, 183 people, including 40 juveniles, have been charged with 205 bushfire-related offenses. Of the 183, 24 people have been charged with deliberately setting fires. According to police, of the 183, another “53 people have had legal actions for allegedly failing to comply with a total fire ban,” and an additional “47 people have had legal actions for allegedly discarding a lighted cigarette or match on land.”

Local press reports indicate that not all of the people charged committed acts that contributed to the raging brushfires. For example, a man in the Sydney suburb of Wallacia was fined for lighting a fire to make a cup of tea. That blaze was extinguished by firefighters. Another man was cited for lighting a fire to cook food in the town of Tarro. That fire was also put out by responding crews…”

        That link you gave is for a brush fire in the hills inland from San Francisco, California in October last year. That was indeed a brush fire.
        
        Apart from the odd tree around houses, no vegetation in the area bigger than a gorse bush or so – one of the reasons they have a huge wind farm there.
        
        If you look on Google Maps at State Hiway 12 just west of Rio Vista you can see some burned out scrub – possibly that fire.

  As far as determining the source of generation of a bush fire – whether it was man-made or by a natural occurrence it makes little difference whether the bush fire was caused by deliberate arson or an idiot lighting a fire (which got out of control) to make a cup of tea during a fire ban period. Both cases are man-made causes not climate change causes.
  So in the 2019 NSW example it is probably correct to say that almost 200 bush fires resulted from man-made causes.

    I saw that one of those charged for deliberate arson was a 19-year old fire fighter. Which as understandably really upset his colleagues.

      Sadly, this is not unusual and seems to occur because the young fireman (it’s almost never female) gets a ‘buzz’ from ‘helping ‘ to put out a fire and, on that basis (and to get another buzz), sets another fire; a fire which he can then attend, act the hero and participate in the extinguishing of the blaze. It’s apparently very addictive!
      
      Rinse and repeat until the offender gets caught.
      
      It’s a psychological problem which can take a while (and several fires) to pinpoint; most of the culprits do jail time.

    Wasn’t a US military base, it is an Iraqi military base that has some US service people stationed there. It is explicitly an Iraqi facility.
    
    And they appear to have done no significant damage (though there may have been Iraqi casualties ?), so it looks a hell of a lot like a deliberate symbolic action to avoid escalation.
    
    I’d say that the Iranians blinked, not Trump. He drew the line at US casualties, there were none, so no need to respond.

      How is Iran ‘humbled’ when it can strike at US forces in Iraq. Given the reaction in Iraq to the US killing of Soleimani, it looks more like a strategic victory for Iran.
      In reality, it is mixed. Iran will be happy that the US will withdraw from Iraq and Syria, but unhappy that ISIS will be emboldened and strenghtened as a result. Trump will be able to point to a withdrawl from Iraq as disentangling the US from foreign commitments.
      Iran’s allies in Syria and Russia will be the most pleased.

Yesterday, I was passed some evidence that confirms that Jacinda’s and Winston’s pledge to transform the NZ economy is another made up bit of spin. In fact, their actions in December 2017 will further entrenching welfare dependency in NZ and not benefit NZ or achieve any transformation.

I am referring to the pledge to increase the minimum wage by large percentages over each of the next two years.

Yesterday, I received information that confirmed major retailers are using the increase in the minimum wage as an excuse not to replace staff that resign. Instead the said retailers will rely on the staff of 3rd parties (who are paid above minimum wage, but less than a living wage) to fill the void. However, to compound matters further, the staff of the 3rd party companies are also getting out of the industry because of poor employment conditions, leading to work not being performed.

In itself the minimum wage/living wage is not the problem, it is a symptom of the problem. The reality is, that it is over the past 70 years NZ has “transformed” from an economy that believed in a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work supported by social security when required, into a welfare first based economy. This has been caused by several factors, some of which are societal, some through government actions and some because dogmas of left & right have been followed without understanding the consequences.

The outcome has been that New Zealand has transformed into:
1. A high cost/low wage economy;
2. That someone earning the average wage is supported by welfare;
3. That despite economic growth, not all have benefited and never will. Trickle down economics for some in work is a myth and they will never benefit;
4. While a growing economy is important, what has been lost sight of is how the economy has grown and at what cost today and in the future; and
5. Not all foreign investment has been for the benefit of NZ Ltd.

In closing, the transformation that has occurred in NZ has occurred under the noses of politicians left and right; it has not occurred in manner that will enable NZ to succeed or prosper; and Jacinda/Winston don’t have a clue as to what the issues are and how to transform matters for the benefit of NZ and NZers.

Finally, I’ve not drunk the koolaid, or changed to dark side of CoL thinking but am saying is that National and ACT need to also address their thinking of what the short and long term issues are that all of us will face if we continue as we are.

  Socialism is an insidiously slow, slippery slope. Both National and Labour governments have presided over a slide to the left, the slide into debilitating dependence on the state. The key difference has been the rate, with Labour pushing hard, and National only slowing, not changing the trajectory.
  
  Countries that have most recently escaped socialism are the ones that are heading in the right direction in my view. Hungary is an example. When Venezuela’s society eventually supanova’s, with the inevitable mass loss of life in addition to those already killed by socialism, we could well see that country get it’s act together. Hard to imagine now, and certainly difficult for the historically socialist South American countries.

  I don’t think it is in any way confirmed that a missile was involved. The so called shrapnel holes are almost certainly not, but simply damage from the impact.
  
  It could be a missile, the aircraft seems to have had a major malfunction and was on fire before crashing, but that could have been a major unconfined turbine failure.

    IRD taxpayer relations are seasonal. If they irritate the taxpayers too much the Govt gets it and they pull back.
    Recently their systems ‘upgrade’ has caused strife. Old balances were revived and recent payments went to who knows where. It has improved. GST was affected and I had client complaints.
    
    WINZ is also having problems I suspect system changes also. Automating benefit systems can go too far. Communications with WINZ can be very difficult.
    
    WINZ are even examining small private company ledger details and making their calls as to what they they will claw back as income by shareholders. They may not even have income from the company which is a separate taxpayer. Capital and income is being confused and the corporate veil ripped up.
    
    The WINZ clawback of 70% of the income with taxes and GST is effectively 100%+

  When my wife was v ill I had trouble getting the GST stuff to my accountants and paid an approximation of what I thought was owed, and the IRD said as long as they knew there was a problem they were here to help and they did.
  
  I approached an IRD stand at a show I was at and thanked them and they were very surprised that I had done that.

Sounds like a load of shit to me.

Iran says it will not hand over the black boxes from the Ukrainian Airlines Boeing 737 to American authorities. Speaking to Iran’s semiofficial Mehr news agency, the head of Iran’s Civil Aviation Authority, Ali Abedzadeh said that the black boxes would be analyzed in the country where the accident took place, in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization rules. He also said Ukrainian investigators would be a part of the process.
“We will not give the black box to the manufacturer [Boeing] or America,” he said.

11 Ukrainian citizens (two passengers and nine crew).
10 Swedish citizens.
Four Afghan citizens.
Three British citizens.
Three German citizens.

The pilots were:

Captain Volodymyr Gaponenko (11,600 hours on Boeing 737 aircraft including 5,500 hours as captain)
Instructor pilot Oleksiy Naumkin (12,000 hours on Boeing 737 aircraft including 6,600 hours as captain)
First officer Serhii Khomenko (7,600 hours on Boeing 737 aircraft)

The flight attendants were:

Ihor Matkov, chief flight attendant
Kateryna Statnik
Mariia Mykytiuk
Valeriia Ovcharuk
Yuliia Solohub
Denys Lykhno

Given the level of the crew’s experience, it’s unlikely that the plane crash was the result of error, Ukrainian International Airlines vice president of operations Ihor Sosnovsky said in a statement on Wednesday.

Ukraine has now dropped its initial “engine failure” reference after it is revealed pilots did not make any kind of mayday call from the 2016-built plane.

So no 7700 squawk.
Workload would have been insurmountable.

This is an instant catastrophic systems failure on a 3 year old 737 NG climbling out on a standard SID, checked two days before that flew the same route faultlessly.

    Technically, no. But you can do a lot of things militarily without declaring war. See everything since Korea for examples of “not technically war”.

Globally, in 2019, about 9,000 people lost their lives in natural catastrophes compared with 15,000 in 2018. This confirms the overall trend towards lower numbers of victims thanks to better prevention measures. On average over the past 30 years, about 52,000 people per year have lost their lives in natural catastrophes.

  It seems, for now, that things have de-escalated. Iran announced that it considered its attack on the US bases a successful retaliation, and Trump, at least for now, has gone along with that.
  But things stay the same, insofar as the US wants to continue a policy of ‘maximum pressure’ on Iran to prevent it acquiring nuclear weapons. There is no reason to suppose this will be successful – the latest developments have only sped up Iran’s abandonment of the JCPOA. The US has very little leverage on Iran, its position in Iraq has weakened, and their ios no reason to expect Iran to be less supportive of its allies across the region.
  As so often with Trump’s policies, and no doubt by complete coincidence, the big winner in the region is Russia.
