Poor gangs are just completely misunderstood cultural organisations.

Apparently the old way of committing a crime to earn your patch is out and now you need to do community services – something like the Boy Scouts I suppose.

I wonder if I can get a needlework badge to go with my Mob patch eh?

Well, the Aussie media are reporting that it was a day of record temperatures in Australia yesterday.

So yes it does seem current temperatures are unprecedented, and due to global warming.

All this has been predicted long in advance. The ‘alarmists’ were right.

    Yep – back on Wednesday 29th November 1826 it was a problem – almost 200 years ago – so we should not be surprised this is happening today. Only real difference is that humans are now living more and more in forest/bush regions, and a sector of society resists all attempts to take precautionary measures to reduce effect.
    
    Here is an interesting read:-
    
    “The Australian (Sydney, NSW : 1824 – 1848) Wed 29 Nov 1826
    
    Great fires in the bush are things of such common occurrence,that it seldom happens to be worth while making particular mention of them.
    They are, for the most part, serviceable, as they tend to clear away patches of forest-trees and bush-wood, and get rid of so much nuisance.
    
    The fires, however, which commenced to burn on Friday night, and which attracted general notice from their magnitude, and the unusual range of land through which they ex-tended, have proved of very serious consequences to most persons whose property lay in their vicinity.
    
    On the North shore, on the Botany road, near Liverpool, and in other places, they have occasioned great damage, and to some have proved productive of heavy loss and calamity.
    
    The amount of injury sustained is as yet but little known. Mr. Wollstonecraft has had his fences burnt down, and mischief done to an amount exceeding two hundred pounds.
    
    An excellent orchard and a good house at Kingsgrove, the property of Mr. Lord, of Macquarie place, has been consumed.
    
    Several bridges have been destroyed, and travelling in such places interrupted thereby. Between Liverpool and Parramatta this has happened.
    
    The fires raged with the greatest violence wherever they broke out, spreading like wildfire, and scarcely allowing persons gifted with the faculty of running pretty fleetly the chance of escaping it.
    
    The horizon was completely clouded, for several miles, with the masses of smoke issuing from them ; and the ship which arrived on Sunday, the Speke, when at a great distance from shore, before indeed those on board could distinguish the land, had her decks covered with embers. Several cattle have been burnt to death ; and it is calculated that the loss of property by the fire is greater than ever known before in the Colony, by a similar event.
    
    A house in the occupation of Milsom, a milkman on the North Shore, was burnt down on Saturday. A man named Macnamara, who lived in the neighbourhood of Wilberforce, was burnt to death— his crop of wheat and his house, and other property completely destroyed. He himself was missing for some time, and was at length dis-covered lifeless in the midst of burnt brush-wood.
    
    At the farm at Petersham considerable damage was done. Nearly a hundred pounds’ worth of fence was destroyed—fruit trees injured, and a filly foal by Camerton, worth upwards of 80 guineas, burnt to death. The house narrowly es- caped the conflagration.
    
    Not a bridge, it is supposed, would have been left standing between Sydney and Parramatta, but for the timely employment of government servants in clearing the sides of the road as the fires extended.
    The hot winds and particles of dust have affected the eye sight of many persons.”

    The temperature in Penrith yesterday was extraordinary at just under 49 degrees.
    
    However extremes on one day and on one place don’t tell us much.
    
    If we take Spring 2019, It was the fifth warmest on record.

    Southern Australia is currently experiencing persistently above average temperature and significantly below average rainfall. That is irrefutable.
    
    It is likely, but not certain, that over coming decades that such periods will become more persistent and extreme so Australia should prepare for that.

      It can be seen on Google Earth just west of the white water facility in a grass paddock between a road and a wide dirt track so it is reasonably well sited, compared to most stations. It has been open just 24 years, though they are missing about 8 months of data from it.
      They say the data is provisional so interesting to track what it does.

        Might be interesting to consider the Geography of Western Sydney (Penrith)…
        one comment on Jo Nova’s site today
        
        The problem for Western Sydney is the heat island effect which presents higher air temperatures than rural proximities. From a study on the Sydney water website, the difference is often 3-4 °C, but higher peak differences can reach 10 °C. One impact is that while the sea breeze can cool Eastern Sydney the local heat island effect prevents it from reaching the western suburbs. So air conditioners run at maximum, pumping out blistering hot air which exacerbates the heat island impact.

    The ‘scientific method’ is bunk if the ‘scientific method’ has been refuted by various scientists. Science deals with theories as well as facts. If an opposing theory that has been peered reviewed and is not allowed the time of day or silenced from the public ie MSM then that is by definition BUNK.

    We’re not even scratching the surface on understanding Ocean currents like the AMO and PDO.
    Same with the Climate system. It’s completely chaotic.
    You do realise that none of the GCMs take into account the effect of Clouds?
    Even Arrhenius didn’t. And admits it in his own Papers.
    It’s too complicated.
    As for consensus. There’s over 3000 Papers saying RCP 8.5 is rubbish yet it’s still touted as the BAU model to use.
    So ‘meh’ to your comment.

      It’s pretty obvious that any climate model has to factor into account the following:
      – Energy input (solar activity, Milankovitch cycles, etc.)
      – Energy output (through reflection, radiation)
      – Energy retention
      – Energy transportation (air and oceanic currents)
      as well as the interactions between all these and how they moderate or amplify the effects of each.
      It’s an incredibly complex mechanism.

    Where to start –
    
    (1) The scientific method does not use “consensus” within its methodolgy to determine the validity or otherwise of any claim
    
    (2) All scientific theories are tentative and subject to revision as new observations are reccorded
    
    (3) The mathematical analysis of complex systems reveals that the prediction of their future behaviour becomes ever more uncertain in longer time frames – for example weather forecasts beyond two weeks can be predicted as accurately by rolling dice as with the best available meteorological techniques

    The scientific method involves testing a hypothesis, and having been able to deliver a result, the hypothesis being able to be repeatedly demonstrated through repeated examples of that test.
    
    Regarding climate change, science has not been able to deliver a single result demonstrating their hypothesis, with every single one of their models failing to accurately predict a result from known inputs. Even when the source data is changed from that recorded to help deliver that result.
    
    There have been several predictions that the polar ice caps would be gone by now. There have been several predictions that polar bears would be extinct, that all glaciers would be gone, and on and on. None of which have proved to be true.
    
    We know the climate is changing. It has for millennia. Before the climate change got moving some 50 years ago, sea levels had risen over 120 meters. CO2 levels have been higher than now.
    
    Are there serious problems to face into? Sure. Should we act to reduce pollution as much as possible? Of course. But spending hundreds of billions of dollars to reduce CO2 emissions by 0.01 percent is stupid.

    Wayne you are clearly someone that puts scientists on a pedestal they do not deserve.
    
    Scientists are people with egos the size of a bus. They have mortgages. They have vested interests, both ego and cash.
    
    If you think someone puts the scientific method and integrity ahead of all else, then you are very misinformed.
    
    Rewind to the 1960s, before plate tectonics was accepted. Scientific consensus was that the land rose up “in place” and erosion then wore it down again.
    
    Land folding was caused by earthquakes. Earthquakes were caused by forces unknown (now we have the cause and effect arrow pointing in completely the other direction).
    
    People had PhDs on modelling how this all worked. Lots of very solid science. They did not take kindly to the upstarts and their tectonics.
    
    Anyone that pointed out that the continents roughly fitted together were laughed at.
    People that wanted to research plate tectonics got their funding cut, got kicked out research positions and conferences etc.
    
    If you had a 20 published papers supporting the old position, a PhD in the field, and a huge following of people inviting you to conferences etc, you would not want your theories disproven either.
    
    Eventually plate tectonics got proven by people actually following fault lines etc underwater.
    
    Dr Robert Ballard (the Titanic guy) was one of the key players in this and put his career on the line following this line of research. Read his autobio.
    
    If you think people in NIWA are above that I assure you they are not.

  When media choose to be partisan on matters of physical science they are doing a dis-service to everyone.
  
  There is sufficient real evidence for a Court presented with a full range of expert witnesses to conclude that the case for climate change is not proven.
  The sun marches on its course, plants still feed and the more CO2 the greener the world.
  Two degrees temperature is concerning? Go and live in the tropics or just shift 200km North. It’s more than 2 degrees hotter at your ceiling level.
  
  The political move for the control of minds by taking over world government using climate as an excuse is doing too much damage to our children. Marxism has proved a failure as it is contrary to human nature. To use climate to bring about political change is a a fraud. To act on it, as being promoted, is economic suicide and not good management of the planet. Killing off the people through stupidity is contraindicated for a civil society.
  Alarmism needs justification not political thought.

  Well, actually, I have looked into the data on global warming in great detail over many years, including all the stuff on sea ice, clouds, solar minima, heat island effects, you name it. At the end of all that I found the IPCC results held up. The only uncertainty for me was the extent to which the oceans caused oscillations in the heat build up – and I still don’t think that is fully understood. But the heat build up is undeniable.
  
  So face it guys, you have been conned. And conned by selective data hacking, which unfortunately is an old trick in psuedo-science.
  
  Time to ask yourselves who conned you, and why. And what you are going to do about it? We need to start nudging towards climate sustainability, pronto.
  
  I think scepticism is really healthy, and appropriate. But when predictions are proven right, and the evidence becomes overwhelming, it is time to rethink.

      No, they will get worse. If ‘green’ Councils don’t allow sufficient removal of fuel load, more property will be lost, more people (and animals, of more concern to some greenies) will die.
      
      And, ironically, more CO2 will burn into the air as huge wildfires rage.
      
      Thanks to ‘Green’ ideology and the belief that every country can actually be coloured green, when some places are simply semi-desert and have to be that way.

        * the cause is not known to be something that can be fixed in the short term;

        The problem is now not only fuel loads but people living among trees. Burn-offs in neighbourhoods are almost impossible. I’ve seen eucalypts, all round small towns. They can be good shade trees for cattle but they are attractive neighbourhood trees too. They line roads with tree studded paddocks for many kms. Safe driving in the presence of a near fire?
        
        With the present population density of Aus. Eucalypts and humans can no longer co-exist. Massive safe zones are needed to be created around population areas. Large buffer zones may have some non-flammable low trees/scrub and possibly cropping or agriculture but with minimal fire risk and fire proof buildings. Population very sparse too. The buffer zone would abut the fire zone but that needs to be restricted to fire prevention teams.
        A scheme like that should be feasible. It should not take too long to establish approved species for buffer zones and preferred ones for human zones. Revised regional plans cannot be 10 year projects but 18 month ones to commencement.

        Kev, yes, living in pretty green areas isn’t realistic in some parts of Australia.
        
        However, cool burns (of leaf litter, branches and other fuel before they build up too much) don’t harm eucalyptus and grass quickly re-grows.
        
        And in a more highly populated area, fuel will have to be removed manually and trees kept at more intermittent distances.
        
        All of which doesn’t look ‘green’ in colour or to naive environmentalists, but it seems to be the correct way to manage Australian fuel loads.

      The UNIPPC, TAR (Third Assessment Report), stated boldly that they couldn’t make predictions. The climate was a chaotic system and the maths was just not possible.
      Other problems were computational. One third of the data points for their model had to be filled in by computer guesstimates as there were no thermometers on all sites. The grid had to be wide too as the volume of calculation would have overwhelmed the project.
      Another problem is that those calcs. had to be done in binary. That cannot give precision and rounding has to occur between repeated passes over the model as it was shortly before. So much number crunching is needed that the world’s largest and fastest computers are used.
      
      The results have been a waste of resources. The actual measured data differs so much from the model forecasts as to grade the models “F”. Models can be tuned to match starting characteristics, perhaps fooling a trainees PHD student. So many inputs are missing including sun and clouds they are exercises in futility and demonstrations of bad numerical computing.
      
      The Summaries for Policy Makers is a political document prepared independently from the 1000+ page scientific reports which are only show up much later.

    There is no question we have to look after the environment, however carbon tax will not stop the Australian Bush Fires, any more than a petition will stop earthquakes. It it did, I’m very sure Jacinda would be terrorising school children into signing it.
    
    And the IPCC “results” are not “results” but opinions. There are many IPCC scientists who are qualified in their field, and have decades of experience, and after research attribute global temperature variations to solar activity.
    
    Of the so called list of IPCC scientists who are “unanimous” in their opinion on man made climate change, most are not experts in their field, but are concerned lawyers, accounts, gynecologists, greenies and so on. I don’t see how spending a lifetime inspecting female genitalia makes one an expert on solar systems, unless they sideline on Uranus inspections.
    
    It is you that has been conned. The only prediction that has come true in Australia, and California, is the following:
    
    The bans on stopping reducing the fuel load, and specifically banning the clearing of dead material and trees, which act as catalysts when fire does break out, and the banning of creating fire breaks, will result in uncontrollable and rapidly spreading fires. This prediction has come to pass.

  Going through the maximum temperatures, amazing how many are set at airfields – you know those pristine sites uncontaminated by the surrounding acres of tarmac and occasional jet wash. To make sure it’s properly captured, the AWS have electronic sensors that have a less than 5 second response time to make sure they get the blast from a turning 737’s engines. That data is then used to generate the maps of how hot Australia was the day or week before or whatever.

    Its a long time since I produced a sensor housing for an airport temperature sensor, but back then it was double skinned to allow air flow, but block direct solar heating, and using sensors that have significant thermal mass (not thermocouples), so the temperature didn’t change every second.
    
    At the time however, I questioned the logic of taking the temperature at an airport, as it was affected by the large mass of surrounding buildings, concrete and tarmac. I understood the location was
    
    Readings varied by several degrees from that of another sensor on the roof of a building in the city.
    
    There is a lot to be said, if you want to know the temperature that Nature provides, is to locate it out of town, in a properly ventilated housing. Then, it is the temperature that nature is providing, with a natural level of humidity, not what temperature is created by surrounding heat sinks or radiators, with latent heat and re-radiation by black bodies.
    
    I still work with temperature sensors today, and a lot goes into making sure you are getting the true picture.
    
    A 5 second response time is very quick. Samples taken at say 30 or 60 second intervals from a sensor with thermal mass, and averaged over 5 minutes would be more appropriate.

        I don’t think I need to tell you that these people are what we call numpties. People who don’t know and who can’t think, yet who parade themselves as experts.
        
        Its about determining the right temperature measuring setup for the situation. I’ve got low cost sensitive temperature sensors that measure the changes when someone walks into a room. Even with 10 second polling, averaged over 60 seconds they are no good for ambient temperature.
        
        For that, I have to use sensors that have shielded chips and still averaged.
        
        Outdoor requires double or triple skinned housings.
        
        Its a novelty in your first day on the job at age 20 to see minute variations, but for adults with years of experience using those variations to show elevated variations is nutjob stuff.

    I have been in South Brisbane and I am concerned now for my family’ safety there. Eucalypts are everywhere even on grazing land where they give a bit of shelter where the roos plays too. Some places like over the road by the railway line there are rows of them with houses less than 100m away. They line the roads too.

      And in any case droughts have been going on all over the world since Adam dumped Lillith for Eve.

Google threw up This article into my feed.

For example, the author states that Jacinda Adern is called a “part time prime minister” because she has a child, when in fact it is because she was regularly on overseas trips and doing overseas magazine interviews. Also, that the #TurnAdern thing is trying to “airbrush her out of history” similar to Egypt’s Al Nour Party covering the faces of female election candidates with flowers in their election lterature.

Seems like a revisioning of history.

    Just out of interest Maggie, those who have undergone colon surgery (usually for cancer) do in fact refer to themselves (in jest) as “punctuated people”.
    
    I had a friend, now sadly deceased from colon cancer that spread, who made reference to this, said he didn’t want to be one of those who got the “full stop” treatment.

Apparently in Indian culture there is a term wives use for their husbands that translates as “God husband”.
Is it any wonder some of them think they have the right to murder their families?

      Spend some time translating Hindi on Google and see that their words and our translation are not quite the same thing.

        My point is that most non-western cultures do not value gender equality, and they need to do something about this.
        Some NZ men hit their wives, but they seldom put them in the hospital as often as men from other cultures do.
        I’ve never heard of a Kiwi man keeping a bottle of acid on the bedroom table to threaten his wife with, but an Indian woman told me her husband used to do this.
        Google the number of acid attacks on women in South Asia compared to NZ.
        Most migrants from Asia and Polynesia are decent, hardworking people, but quite a few bash their wives and this needs to stop.

  The US is a staunch ally of Israel, but is also simultaneously allied to, and opposed to, all Islamic countries, except to Iran, which is enemy number one. So all you need to remember is Israel good (no exceptions). Saudi Arabia – good, except when it supports ISIS or al Qaeda. Qatar – good, except when blockaded by the Saudis. Yemen – good, but needs to be bombed because Saudis say so. Iraq – good, used to be very bad, but now only bad if allied with Iran. Syria – bad, when gassing own people, but good when attacking ISIS or Kurds. Kurds – good and a staunch ally except when in the way of Syrians or Turks. Pakistanis – good, except when allied with the Taliban.

Yesterday there was a bit of argy bargy about whether pointing out the speed of ardern dumping $5 million into the pot after White Island was racist or not.

I raised the issue of the lack of compensation for the businesses severely impacted by the ongoing road and rail construction in Auckland.

We have also seen a fair bit of natural disaster damage on the West Coast recently but I did not see ardern opening our wallets for that.

Now, some may see it as racist because the businesses affected in Whakatane are maori owned and run but I see that as an unfortunate coincidence.

ardern is keen to front the cameras when there is international coverage and to keep herself there as much as possible, see the Aussie fire grandstanding for example, and White Island involved primarily international tourists which brought the international press which got ardern into action. The $5 million was just a cheap way to grab another headline.

So in my mind race based altruism is not the primary factor here, but still in her mind, but just plain media whoring.

Your other point was that yo didn’t see Ardern open the wallet for the westcoast, yet she did.
        
        Yes this is all about her whoring media attention locally and internationally, but we can’t claim it is race based when it is there for any businesses that needs it and not just the Māori ones.
        
        We can easily see that everything she has done is not about ones race or religion, it’s about her getting attention in the media, here and overseas.     This is unfortunately Australian wildfires doing in one fell swoop what should have been done in smaller, cool fires every year through proper forest management. We’re seeing the result of a fuel build up Australia should never have allowed to happen.
    
    Whether climate change is to blame for the current weather or not: just don’t allow this build up of fuel in a hot, dry country. And definitely don’t live too near big loads of fuel in a hot, dry country.

I guess some people don’t realize there are massive fires in Australia or the smoke is coming here….. but to ring an emergency number to report that it is here, hmmm . Don’t remember articles of people ringing 111 when it was over the South Island.
