I pulled this from “Climate Change Learning Programme – Wellbeing Guide” which is a resource for teachers who are charged with scaring the bejesus out of the younger generation over “climate change™”

The ‘Climate Change Wellbeing Guide’ has been developed to provide teachers with
background information and tailored resources to help them navigate the delivery of climate
change scientific content, whilst maintaining the wellbeing/hauora of students.
It links into, and is intended to be used alongside, the ‘Climate Change: Prepare today,
live well tomorrow’ learning programme.

The resource will support teachers with practical activities and tip sheets. The activities are
designed to be gentle, and to provide fun conversation starters that can build upon existing social
and emotional curriculum and mental health content, at school, and in the community. There are
extension activities and related activities in the learning programme ‘Climate change: Prepare
today, live well tomorrow’.

Guidance is provided to teachers on mental wellbeing in the classroom, dealing with challenging
conversations and behaviours, and the identification and referral of children at risk. In this resource
there is information about the various services and supports that are available if referral is required.
Links to resources that assist teachers to support students when climate change disasters occur
are also included.

Are our children really so delicate?

The sad thing is life is full of challenges and heartbreaks and my guess is when these propagandized students emerge into the real world “climate change™” is going to be the least of the problems they are going to encounter and overcome would be my guess.

  A recent media article, in the wake of the Australian fires, suggests New Zealanders carefully consider the trees and their litter that may surround our houses, posing a fire danger.
  
  However –
  Trees provide shade, which has a cooling effect in towns and cities. Placed strategically around buildings, they can cut electricity used for cooling in summer. – Climate Change, teacher resource
  
  And such tree surround may also in winter increase humidity and dampness, but climate warming should eliminate that!
  See now why this school programme has the second “Wellbeing” course accompanying it?

  Not to worry, I am quite sure teachers will be dealing very well with challenging behaviour from the pupils who last year marched noisily demanding a climate change emergency be declared. Some fairly ignorant and woke placards – deliberately challenging.

  Actually, if you look through many of the activities outlined in the 2 resources, they are incredibly boring.
  All the emphasis on talking/writing about feelings, lesson after lesson, will tune pupils out, especially if they have little regard for their teacher.

    What is the actual motivation behind the “Climate Change” syllabus?
    Does the Winston-chosen Government Coalition hope to have enough “climate“ policies over National, that young adults (not able to themselves vote) will pressure parent voters?
    
    Or does the Government run the risk that alerted children will see them as lying non-performers when, like the absolute failure of Kiwibuild, the utter failure to even decide what fuel saving means – mode, route, management and cost – might join Auckland’s CBD to the airport (for fossil fuel consuming air travel), that the One Billion Trees Programme which may only plant about 230 million trees (less than a quarter of the billion) beyond the number that forestry will “harvest” (means: fucking chop down) in the same period?
    
    It seems the course will evolve around dismal essay exercises, but inspired by last year and Greta, students may take time to demonstrate – against Government inaction, to which recognition of this that students already have will added the courses’ content – simply fossil fuel thrown on the fire?
    The entire exercise is quite a motivational puzzle.

  Occasionally I’ve been told that Christianity must be correct because so many people around the world call themselves Christian. By that logic, because the overwhelming majority of Christians are Roman Catholic, that indeed must be one true faith. I can’t see why schisms are necessary. (/tongue in cheek)

At the core of the 2016 UN Paris Agreement on Global Warming, to which New Zealand is a signatory, is the following commitment:
“Holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2℃ above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5℃ above pre-industrial levels, recognising that this would significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change.”

So what are these “pre-industrial levels” that are supposed to be the baseline for measuring the human contribution via CO2 to global warming. Is it the Paleolithic era when humans chipped rocks to make tools? Is it the Dark Ages when people resumed living in wattle and daub huts after the collapse of Rome? Or is it the 17th/early 18th century before steam power came into widespread use. When was this climate “goldilocks” period from which we are alleged to have seriously deviated thanks to the evils of industrialisation?

You will not find it defined in The Paris Agreement no matter how hard you may search through footnotes and appendices because AN AGREED BASELINE DOES NOT EXIST.

Even now “climate change researchers” are scrambling to reach agreement on a baseline. While many are attracted to using the period 1850-1900 because the first available recorded global temperature series date from about this time, others argue that that period is compromised by at least a century of industrial emissions. Some propose the early 18th century. but that lies smack in the Little Ice Age when temperatures were much lower than today and for example ice fairs were regularly held on the River Thames. The problem is if you set the baseline too low you blow the 1.5 to 2.0C target in the Paris Agreement out of the water because we will have already broken through it. That goal was set by politicians and it is the first duty of “climate change researchers” to come up with figures that keep their political masters happy. You might of course try to expunge the Little Ice Age (1300-1850) from the record but that has already been attempted by the UN IPCC and it didn’t end well (another story to come).

So if little Jessica ever asks her climate change teacher : “what period do pre-industrial levels refer to”, her teacher will have no answer and Jessica will be made to stand facing the wall and to recite “I must not ask impertinent, inconvenient questions in climate change class”, at least 100 times. In effect it is like asking “how long is a piece of string?” because without an agreed starting point alleged “man made climate change” is not capable of finite measurement.

And now for some good news. The latest NOAA figures show temperatures in the US have dropped by 2.6F between 2012 and 2019. How will “climate change researchers” manipulate that series of measurements? Perhaps we are headed towards another Ice Age, it certainly feels like it in Wellington so far this “summer”.

      Honestly, give it up. I realise how hard it is to change a deeply felt belief, but the evidence is overwhelming and the counter arguments have fizzled out completely.
      
      Time to accept that climate change is real, and think about how to mitigate, or if you don’t want to do that, how to adapt.
      
      Plenty of good discussion to be had there! Lots of business opportunities, lots of arbitrage opportunities. For example, where to buy property? What will happen to the insurance industry? What will happen to consumer preferences for a whole host of products?

        The idea that any additional CO2 in the atmosphere released by human economic activities will inevitably lead to a “climate catastrophe ™” is the problemtic area.
        
        And the real issue is the parasite classes, i.e those elements of society whose skill set have little of real value to add to society in general have latched onto “climate change ™” as a way to demand tribute from the productive elements of society, that is those who actually do useful things – like milking cows or making steel.
        
        Its no accident that the biggest “polluters” in this country are allegedly Dairy Farmers.
        
        That because the dairy industry is our biggest earner and this is a way non contributors can get a piece of that action without actually adding anything of value to that particular industry.

    I always find it hypocritical that government leaders harp on about carbon footprints caused by fossil fuels, and the need for taxes to fix this, yet say diddly squat about the massive rips in the ozone layer caused by nuclear and DEW weapons testing. Rips that allowed excess radiation form the sun to impact earth, and that have taken years to heal over.
    
    I also find it suppressive that Climate Change “research” never establishes a scientific baseline.
    They never allow for the natural cycles of this solar system, and the suns role in it. There are peaks and troughs in the temperature of earth, mostly caused by the sun and solar system variances.
    But Climate Change advocates always ignore this, taking absolute temperature variations, up or down, as proof of Man Made Climate Change.
    
    If you use that logic, and ignore natural variations, you could blame warming in Summer on people having outdoor barbecues, and the cooling in winter to people staying indoors and not having outdoor barbecues.
    
    Weather modification using technology, was originally discovered by Nikola Tesla in the late 1890’s, and has been used for decades by scientists and military.

NOAA says this past year was 0.98 degrees Celsius warmer than the 1951 to 1980 mean, making the 2010s “clearly the warmest decade on record.”
  
  Climate experts at The Heartland Institute dispute this claim, pointing to a cherry-picked period for the “mean” comparison and data that has been consistently adjusted to artificially make recent years appear significantly warmer than in decades past. In fact, NOAA’s state-of-the-art land-based temperature stations in the United States, placed by design to minimize the urban heat-island effect and other factors that corrupt the data, show that the U.S. was cooler in 2019 than in 2005. I am one of those people who eat ‘less meat’ who would probably fit into someone’s narrative about something. I also believe climate change is 100% happening and we’re causing it. But those two things aren’t linked.

In fact, I’m pretty sure people eating less meat is to do with more white meat being available and people generally trying to balance white and red meat intake a bit for health reasons. Some *might* be making that choice for climate change reasons but I question why Kiwi kids are being told not to eat meat for environmental reasons ahead of their own health and well-being.

It’s an interesting question. Instead of making it so we *can* eat meat AND not die in a hellish firescape, we’re just telling kids the only way to cope with environmental concerns is to just not do something at all. The underlying health reasons for eating meat and animal proteins are getting lost in the mix. Adaptation through not doing things is a lazy alternative when we should be teaching them to adapt the underlying processes so they can continue. But that would involve people being able to question things and using tools like GE to solve environmental problems, rather than just accepting them and taxing the hell out of people.

  Nothing wrong with people choosing whatever diet they wish, as long as they are prepared for the consequences. Vegan mates of mine are very very knowledgeable and careful. Teens almost certainly not so much.
  
  Interestingly my vegan mates say the biggest challenge for raising vegan children is getting enough calories into them. Teens / insufficient calories – trouble brewing.

  Back in the real world you would struggle to find anyone doing anything for reasons of ‘climate change’. If someone loves barbeque pork and stops that because climate change they have a mental health problem.
  
  More immediately, how many frequent fliers offset their carbon emissions? How many politicians do so? How many politicians will decide to move to Wellington so they don’t need to fly hone every Thursday? None. How many Australians who demand that someone “do something” have given up their SUVs? None.
  
  I could go on. People care about reducing emissions until they need to do so. Then they don’t care at all. It is what economists call “revealed preference”.
  
  If we are unlucky New Zealand will be the only country in the world that might actually “do something” about climate change. The country will tank, and China will laugh at us and buy their dairy elsewhere.

    Off setting carbon emissions by paying an airline extra money has to be one of the biggest cons of all time. Where the hell is the money going, I’d like to know. I refuse to do it. This climate change hysteria has been a wonderful money maker for supermarkets too with the ban on plastic bags. They’ve saved a heap of money but have they dropped their prices? Not a chance.

  I think, and feel free to correct me, people are eating less red meat due to its cost and not much else in the way of things. Chicken and pork are cheaper but….. the pork comes from some foreign shore it is less expensive but if you don’t want to be full of hormones etc that they pump them full of (chickens in particular in NZ ) then you actually eat less meat.

  If, as expected, a resolution isn’t reached by Waitangi Day, Pania Newton plans to take a hikoi from Paihia, just south of Waitangi, to the Whare Runanga, a meeting house on the Treaty grounds.
  
  A spokesperson for the Prime MInister said “the government continues to work with all parties to reach a resolution as soon as is possible”.
  But “… with Pania Newton mulling a hikoi to the Treaty grounds” it would appear she has not given up, and it seems too she is not one of the parties being worked with, as she mentions Government “unwillingness and ignorance”.
  
  Newton was at Waitangi in 2018 for Jacinda Ardern’s first speech there as Prime Minister when she asked Māori to hold her government to account.
  “Hold us to account. Because one day I want to be able to tell my child that I earned the right to stand here”, Ardern said at the time.
  It doesn’t look like this Waitangi Day will be that day.
  
  But if a solution is forth-coming, in the next 19 days, will it be presented to Pania Newton as a fait accompli – excuse the French – commonly used to describe an action which is completed before those affected by it are in a position to query or reverse it.
  Is that in the spirit of the “principles of Waitangi”?
  
  And, a new slogan may be needed. “We are one” has been used and “They are us” won’t really cut it any more. Dressing up to look like ‘them”, a hijab post March 15, or wearing a kahu huruhuru – a Māori cloak bestowed on chiefs and dignitaries to convey prestige, respect and power. “Walking the halls of Buckingham Palace” didn’t cut it either – it looked really pretty, but was false and unearned. As it still is, of now.
  
  How much will declaring the whole thing beyond Government involvement, but then commanding Fletchers to stop everything, now cost the nation.
  And is the price of the land now still based on a purpose Auckland Council defined it for – housing – or revert to what Maori may wish to do with their own privately owned land, or is it held now in Crown limbo if the Government has provided the cash for it?

        Tricky, but you could (eventually) get most of the way by water. Across the Pacific, around Cape Horn, up through the Atlantic, North Sea to the Rhine, and follow that up to the Swiss Border. Have to change craft as a yacht suitable for the South Pacific and Cape Horn wouldn’t make it up the Rhine very far. From the final navigable point on the Rhine, walk to Davos. Our current education system with all its add-ons and plug-ins is a shambles
I’ve got an idea – do away with all schools except university/advanced learning. Except maybe specialised/charter type where the teaching methods aren’t govt dictated.
Most kids learn/get to succeed in life from what their parents and grandparents teach them.
They don’t need ‘your education’.
Most kids are smarter than they’re given credit for.
The current system will make kids dumber.

  I call bollocks on that. Labour had “nine long years” in opposition to consult on the policies they wished to implement. They have wasted 2 1/2 years of their three year term in government.
  
  National on the other hand, in 2 1/2 years in opposition has now released 17 policy discussion documents which have gone out for public and industry consultation. I heard at a party meeting just before Christmas that as a result of the consultation they have done so far, they almost have enough legislation ready to go to occupy most of their first term in government.
  
  Labour took six years to get over being turfed out, and the last three years with infighting between the Cunliffe, Little and Ardern factions. They did very little policy development. A National government in 2020, united behind Simon Bridges, will hit the ground running.

      The couple of reports I read were basically fluff / fluff / fluff with carefully selected data followed by recommendations in which the main theme was ‘We need more money. Now. Or else.’
      
      One of the problems with thousands of recommendations pouring in is that some will be at odds with others, idealogically but not least because our small country does not have a few spare trillions
      sloshing around.
      
      Example – from the Expert Welfare Working Group the Government accepted changes worth $285.8 million over four years, roughly 1 per cent of what the group recommended, which worked out to be $5.2 billion a year.
      
      So tell me again what the use was of those experts?

It’s probably about time NZ had a reforming government again, but National and Labour don’t seem to have any ideas.     I took my little dog, she is a Schnoodle, to a restaurant for lunch with friends the other day. It was on an outside patio and they provided her with a water bowl.
    
    She was well behaved and there was another dog there as well. She was patted by other café clients.

    I see it was a 1.4 litre engine, that’s a turbo powered 4 cylinder, and turbo’s are more sensitive to octane ratings. Being a Japanese import is probably why it didn’t have stickers recommending the octane rating – thought that would be up to the importer. I have an Audi turbo that is ex-Japan and it has a 95 octane or greater sticker. I try to stick to 98 in that and my VW VR6’s – does give better economy but not quite enough to offset the cost. But better for the engine long term.
    
    Modern turbos like the 1.4 should be able to adjust the ignition to cater for lower octane, but especially on a small reasonably highly boosted engine there may not be enough adjustment possible to use 91 Octane.
    
    As they don’t mention the year, I wonder if it might be on of the 1.4 turbo and supercharged VW engines which were quite problematic. Great performance all round from a small engine but over complex with a supercharger to provide boost at low revs and the turbo for more sustained boost.

    @ Stephiboy So hundreds of physicists, engineers, meteorologists, geologists, palaeoclimatologists are just ignoring facts according to you… Actually from the arguments I have read especially on the thermal characteristics of CO2, there is a huge amount of genuine scientific knowledge and they are grappling with scientific concepts that can only be expressed theoretically or mathematically. One can’t observe a single photon interacting with a single CO2 atom. One can only deduce scientific laws, translate these into mathematical equations and hope we have not made an error along the way. Ignoramuses like you just follow the masses, because lots said so.
