Why is she not holidaying in New Zealand?,’ he scoffed.

    It will be realized, that,
    1. Scott Morrison did not light them.
    2. No mitigation of this imagined global warming, would have prevented them.
    3. People deliberately lit an estimated 300 of these fires.
    4. Opposition parties and the media are playing politics over the bodies of the dead….again.
    But
    Dear old Jacinda will find it very difficult to cure the ineptitude of her CoL and their destruction of our economy.
    1, It is all her fault.
    2. Her CoL do not have any idea how to fix the mess they have created, this why they, like Helen Clark before her, try to blame someone/ something else.

Wonder how they would react on their imagined golden girl if the first thing she did was to stop all oil and gas exploration in Australia.In fact an action replay of the same damning decision she has done in NZ. Not forgetting her war cry of Comrade !Comrade !Comrade !played out 15 times on her addressing a Socialist/Commie Gang of youth activists in Europe. Yes it has all been recorded on tape.

  It is unfathomable, not to say utterly outrageous, that Ardern, the (like it or not) Prime Minister and CEO of New Zealand, has taken an 8-week holiday.
  
  How is that possible? Does everything stop while she’s “on leave.” With a salary, plus perks, of $493,655 ($9493 per week) her “break” has cost the NZ taxpayer $75,947. To me, and I suppose every honourable, non-troughing, non-Leftist, such splurging is utterly and unbelievably unconscionable. Even worse, the title accorded Ardern is: “Right Honourable.”

      Yes, but the Maori Council didn’t have Waitangi Tribunal decision to take to the High Court, they do now. Thedecision which if upheld, means the water running through my property is not mine. So as I said, this is Jacinda’s seabed issue, or will she try to kick the can down the road?

        We have a great deal of water running through our property, but I wouldn’t say that we claim it to be “ours”.
        What we do claim is the right to use the water for human and animal consumption here.
        If some other people/groups are going to be arbitrarily given ownership of all water, that will cause a great deal of difficulty to a great many citizens, ratepayers and the taxed.

        What does “mine” mean to you? Because that river /stream also runs through other properties, which by your definition also makes it “theirs”.
        
        So whose “mine” takes precedence? To what extent do you think your right to that water extends to the consequences of anyone – or in fact the natural habitat – downstream?
        
        Do you believe you can take as much as you like, to the extent that the flow downstream is significantly reduced? Do you think you can discharge into that waterway anything you like and as long as it doesn’t affect “your” stretch of the waterway, regardless of what it does downstream?
        
        Because that is the real consequence of ownership, and the very real trap that vesting some sort of ownership and “right” in one group has…

        Currently, no landowner/manager can “discharge anything you like” into a river or waterway or take any amount of water you like.
        We are governed and closely monitored by local and central government regulations.
        Where we are, we are allowed to take water for household use.
        Anything else – eg a small irrigation project – is subject to the obtaining of a consent permit from the Council. Depending on how many other water take consents apply to the water way in question, you may not get a consent.
        Consents are costly and regularly monitored by the authorities.

  Her extended absence and desire to enjoy herself and be a show pony around the place with various photo ops in my opinion reveals her true shallowness and total lack of understanding of the gravitas of her job and her total unworthiness of holding the position of PM. She is an absolute embarrasment. The country is currently being governed by a leaderless bunch of student politicians and the sooner that they are voted out the better off we all will be. Thanks for nothing Mr Peters may you also be removed from office as well at the next election, you have not done NZ and its economy any favours by supporting this bunch of incompetents.

    Prior to this, Ms Ardern, for most people, was a relatively unknown backbencher who had achieved nothing, and knew nothing.
    Peters used her in his personal campaign against National.
    There is little doubt that the same influencers – media, celebrity hacks and Peters- will agitate for the same result this year.
    Hope National has a plan to deal with it rather than stand round like stunned mullets as last time.

      Hugzilla’s “win” was set up by Clinton losing. All those people that wanted Clinton to win because she’s a woman were gagging for a woman to win something. Then Auntie Hells lost the Second Prize of big cheese at UN, so when it came time for Hugzilla all those NZ voters upset over Clinton could still do something and vote for the wimminz.
      
      No doubt in my mind that gave Labour around half their bounce from 20-something% to 39% (or whatever). The rest came from “oh thank God it’s not Andrew Little”.

  To be fair, I’m not sure what being “on holiday” means for any senior politician in any party (especially when they are government). Somehow I doubt that they walk out of the office, shut the door, and then do nothing related to their role for however long it is. Hell, I’m not in such a role, but I can’t completely divorce myself from work-related stuff for more than a couple of days.

    So you are overlooking the time spent in Gisborne and the photo op in Queensland at winery with hosts/owners.
    
    PS. In your post you questioned whether she can ever be on holiday. I would argue that she would do well to remember that sentiment when she is looking for photo opportunities.
    
    Because next time, she would do well to think about the message she is giving enjoying hospitality at an Australian winery rather than a New Zealand winery during the Southern holiday season! But there again, that is asking a bit much of Ardern to think as we all know she doesn’t think, she merely repeats sound bites made up for her by spin merchants.

      Actually my post questions whether any senior politicians in any party have extended holidays completely removed from “work” – that no planning, rallying, plotting, or organising (to paraphrase Maggy’s original comment) goes on in those periods. I think having Ministers on holiday for several weeks sends a bad signal. AFAIK there is no leave entitlement, ie they are not employees. So if a minister wants 6 weeks holiday all that is required is the agreement of the PM and it is all on full pay. Personally I think they should be limited to 4 weeks annual leave like everyone else.

  Sydney, when we plebs travel overseas we are required to fund our insurance, and in some cases pre existing medical problems can add hundreds of dollars to the premium. I would like to know when MPs travel out of the country on private business do they pay their own insurance – or do they claim it is on ‘government business’? Winston must be a travel insurer’s nightmare so always seems to travel as ‘part of the job’.

    It will be government covered. Normally when officials travel overseas they do not take out travel insurance. It is generally cheaper for the public service employer to undertake to bring a sick or injured employee home at any cost. It would happen rarely.

  John Key used to go to Hawaii and Helen Clark tramping in Nepal.

  In the USA, and other parts of the world too, bees get transported around for pollination services. Something like half the bees in USA get transported to the Californian almond orchards for pollination.
  
  Even without any herbicides & pesticides, this is not a good thing. Bee diseases are transported across the country with zero time to build up resistance etc. All the movement is stressful for the bees. They do not get fed properly (lack of plant diversity) and end up being fed an artificial diet of sugar, soy and anti-bioitics.
  
  At the end of the pollination season, most bees are killed, then they start the new season with fresh nucleaus colonies (aka nucs). Nucs get imported from all over the world (including NZ), which means bees do not adapt to local conditions.
  
  From a bee perspective, the almond industry is the worst environmental disaster out there.
  
  Nobody who believes that bees are critical to our future survival can condone the Californian almond industry – it is a worse environmental disaster than just about anything else – worse than real dairy.

        Polynesians appear to have originated from the Austronesian peoples – who spread from Taiwan as far as Malaya, New Guinea, Madagascar and the Pacific. These succesive waves of migration started about 3-4,000 years ago. It appears that the eastern Pacific islands were settled by around 1000 CE, and new Zealand, the last of the major land massess to be settled by humans within a few hundred years after that.

      An evidently well-held view, but despite that, you might be interested to learn that Ngati Porou and other tribes quite happily acknowledge the fact that ‘Maori’ (whomever ‘They’ may have been) were greeted by others (ie, ‘earlier’, pre-existing, peoples) on the beaches on-which they landed after their voyages from ‘Hawaiiki’.
      
      In some instances the ‘earlier’ pre-Maori peoples actually have names as well.

        No, I don’t think that’s racist at all. Thinking about taniwha, I think it highly unlikely that Hataitai in Wellington is the remains of the taniwha, Whataitai, who failed to escape form the harbour and was left stranded to die in the sun. Re the Waikato expressway, I found this story interesting:

    Really? I’d have thought that the pre-Maori claims were in the minority (and some of those seemed a little fanciful – e.g., the Celts, I think – I have vague memories of a Chinese hypothesis as well, but that may be my faulty memory).

      Even Dr Ranginui Walker pushed the barrow of a pre maori race based on the old oral traditions and if you can be bothered there are many pre maori artifacts, it just doesn’t suit the current narrative and if you search you will find many references now deleted.

        I thought it was fanciful at the time. I couldn’t see how the Celts could possibly get all the way to NZ in one “hit” as it were. There would have to be a extended trial of Celtic migration and settlement forming a route to NZ, and such a trial doesn’t seem to exist.

        You both miss the point, either deliberately or because I was too subtle, something I am not often accused of.
        
        Much of maori history as “accepted” and often relied on to some degree in the Waitangi Tribunal deliberations is “oral”. So, the existence of people pre maori is also a large part of “oral history” so why is that part to be discredited and anything to do with who killed who to get what is “gospel”.

        I had a look at your Menzies link. Either it’s a bit of a mess, or I’m missing something. It seems to be a collection of claims with no evidence. Other bits I’m suspicious of –

        (As reported by David Knight 07.04.03). Mt DNA shows female line is almost entirely Asian whilst Y chromosome DNA shows males came from Papua New Guinea.
        
        I’m not an expert in genetics but I think that mtDNA (mitochrondrial) is much less resistant to change – it is a good marker of very, very distant ancestry. Y chromosome is nDNA which changes more easily over generations. If I’m correct, then that report is unsurprising (it’s not evidence of any recent Asian influence).

        It is a good read, SGA. Not a long book, but covers well what is actually known about human settlement of the Pacific, and some of the ‘alternative’ theories that pop up from time to time.
        Also, it’s not actually necessary to read a garbage book, say 1421 or Chariots of the Gods, to identify it as bunk. When someone make such wild claims, there is usually a succinct review or other source of critical assessment.

        The “folklore” makes a claim that the archaeological evidence does not even speak to – again, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. The best you can claim on the archaeological evidence is that Peoples Prior to Maori, or PTPM (not to be confused with PPTM) are unlikely, but not impossible.

    I will always remember the stories I sat and listened to from Maori who would come up and put a hangi on every Friday for tourists for us when I was a child. Stories of those who were here before them. Sadly I think for many these stories are lost in the wind as the elders have passed over and the younger are not interested.     Archaeological excavation of a Maori occupation site at Lake Poukawa shows the site was probably occupied between 150 and 300 years ago and has been badly disturbed by European farming. There is no evidence for human occupation before the Taupo Pumice eruption.
    
    3. As your mythical pre-Maori inabitants never existed, it follows that they could not have signed a treaty. Thus, non-existents signatories to a non-existent treaty could have no expectation of redress for imaginary girevances.

This assault could have seen a two year prison sentence so is this becoming a habit from a Labour led Government. This might be coincidence but the young Labour summer camp proceedings ended up with a similar or replica ending. On Monday the matter was scheduled to go to trial before a Judge alone but at the Eleventh hour defending Council said her client might plead guilty a lower level assualt charge.

    Actually the government has been taking in extra taxes due to wage increases. This was a tax increase by stealth. Increasing the tax bands to reflect inflation would simply make their tax take ‘normal’ again.

If so, don’t we need a gender neutral term so we can criticise politicians without accusations of sexism? Most terms of abuse are somewhat gender specific. “Dick” is clearly masculine, “bitch” feminine. Can anyone else come up with something that falls smack in the middle? “Person” is so bland. But terms such as “fuckwit” and “drongo” have their own inherent pejorativeness. And calling them a “stupid politician” is an obvious tautology. Perhaps it’s just easier to say “Jacinda is stupid” or “Simon is thick”

  I live in the S Waikato and this is the 2nd timber products business to go under in the last few years.
  People are moving into the area as housing is cheap. It has doubled in price though over the last 8 years though.
  The people moving in are retired or working in Rotorua, Tauranga, Hamilton as they are all less than an hours pleasant drive away.

What is well known is that oceans have massive thermal inertia, usually measured in thousands of years. Willis Eshenbach rips the paper to shreds. The comments below are very entertaining…. I love the fact they use 4000 data points to describe the whole ocean…..

I was just speaking to my partner’s mum.
We gave her a $500 ‘Westfield Gift Card’ for Christmas so she went into Newmarket yesterday to have a look around the new Mall.
She was saying she spent the best part of nearly two hours in there – one of them trying to find her way out!
Ma reckons the layout over the different levels is like a ‘poorly designed maze’ and believes if a major fire or something happened, people lost in there “….would be well and truly f~~ked” [her words not mine]

Anyone else here had a similar experience there?

  An awful place to be. I am concerned for my family living there with trees lining a large part of the highways and pockets among the housing. The tall eucalypts give good shade and plenty of space below but what a risk.

I’m currently restoring some old fuel lamps and stoves I’ve had in storage for years.

So I see that the emaciated lettuce chewing half of the God awful “band” called the Veronica’s has taken down her viral, social media hate inciting video which resulted in the posited suicide of the conservative gay student leader in Brisbane.

Media are hand wringing and cancer causing sincere in their concern about mob justice on social media.

Fuck off. They love it. That singer should go on trial and be made an example of. Or does that only apply to non-progressive sane people?

In my humble opinion, the “Paris Accord” has as much weight and validity as that bit of paper signed by Neville Chamberlain just before the start of WW2.

As to any other international agreements:

China would sign anything, then just ignore it.
India wouldn’t bother signing anything.
The USA signs things then doesn’t bother enforcing them.
NZ signs things because they don’t want to upset anyone.
Britain signs things because they are afraid of their muslim population.
Australia could actually be the only place which respects their signatures.
