  Forecast for Christchurch is 27 today. 29 tomorrow.
  
  Late December and early January are frequently disappointing. That’s why everyone goes on holiday only to return to work and school as the weather gets better.
  
  Three of the last four summers have had above average temperatures. 2016, 2018 and 2019 in New Zealand had three of the four highest average temperatures in the last century. Especially if you live in Wellington you will be aware that three out of the last five summers have been stand outs. You need to go back to 1998 to find a summer that is comparable.
  
  So don’t worry. You will be enjoying above average warm weather from mid January through to early April.

      Yes 2 years ago was the hottest summer ever recorded. Wellington reached a record temperature of 31 degrees.
      
      I’m a bit of a weather geek and I recall some awful Wellington summers when I lived there. I recall new years eve in 2006 when it poured, there was a freezing southerly and all the outdoor events were cancelled.
      
      So summers have improved and Winter is milder. You need to go back to 2006 and 2001 to find seriously below average winter temperatures.
      
      However almost every year, the period from Christmas to mid January is ordinary at best. New Zealand should switch its summer holidays to February. The government could easily switch the long school holiday break to 20 January to end February.

    Don’t tell porkies, Sydney A. In Christchurch a high of 23 predicted today (it’s currently 20) and for tomorrow 25. And Monday- well, plummeting down to 16, with 17 on Tuesday.
    
    This summer has thus far been a non-event in The Garden City. Please please please send us even a smidgen of that ‘global warming’.

      WTF? You are in Christchurch New Zealand, right? Where at 2.22 pm the temperature is 27 degrees. The forecast maximum has been updated to 29 degrees.

      I know November is not “summer” but Christchurch recorded one of its hottest ever November with the mean temperature two degrees above average. You just had to be here to realise that with four 30 degree plus days.
      
      December returned to average.
      
      Btw the forecast for tomorrow is also 29 degrees.

      I absolutely agree. It has been cold as anything here in Chch so far this “summer” with only a handful of warm days during December.
      
      A bit warmer today – got to 27 for a short while, but now it is back to under 20.
      
      It has also been very windy and cloudy this year – increasing wind chill and making it feel cooler than it is.
      
      Fired up the BBQ once…
      
      The SI, Canterbury in particular, is very dependent on the prevailing winds. A bit to the East and it’s cool, a few degrees to the West and we get Norwesters which are hot.

      Nukuleka, the ongoing weather “whinges” that contributors to kiwiblog make, indicate their unrealistic personal weather preferences and expectations of what should happen!
      Weather just happens – and most of us know that and accept it and sensibly adapt our plans accordingly.
      Throughout NZ there is a considerable range of
      daily weather conditions – from Southland to Northland which means considerable differences.
      None of us are forced to live where we do – so if the weather does not suit you – don’t live there.
      The recent whinging about “cold,” wherever it is you live – appears to have just happened this year in the area of your choice to live.
      Most normal people accept these varying weather conditions, year by year, in the area where they live as they know weather changes happen and “whinging” does not help and makes no difference. Acceptance means some adaptions are needed, life goes on.
      As for the rest of us in NZ – we accept that “weather” just happens, and we are pleased when appropriate weather coincides with any events we have planned.

    Ardern reading Child Poverty papers is largely a waste of time. She doesn’t do policy or detail.
    The answer, regardless of the content of the papers, will be lots of money flowing to the parents of these children. The result will be more of the same.
    National was doing some useful work in their term on identifying the root causes, and addressing them. But it is hard, detailed, thankless work and doesn’t sum up nicely for the media in a 10 second soundbite.
    Such is New Zealand Aotearoa in the 21st century.

  The climate alarmists are probably getting ready for their latest doom and gloom predictions. Problem is that the facts are running against them in such a way that even Stephiegirl will be reduced to her usual ad hom arguments.
  The fires aren’t where the heat is. They are mainly in the coastal strip which has been wetter and cooler than the central areas which have had the 40+ weather

  Look at the weather records for those towns that have been burnt. Nothing usual in their temperatures. Look at Bateman’s bay in the centre of the burn. It had below average temperatures in November and December.

    There is something about the topics of climate and weather that makes many commentators on this site state things that are demonstrably false. That does not seem to extend to other topics generally. I have no idea what the triggers are.
    
    Like today I commented that it is 27 degrees in Christchurch. The metservice website says so. My personal weather station in Saint Albans says the same thing. So someone replies saying no it is wrong. It is not warm in Christchurch. Seriously debate opinions but saying black is white is a bit odd.

      No Sydney – you don’t read the small print or look at the data. The maps are done using a 1961-90 baseline. Most of the weather stations in the area, like the one at Bateman’s Bay, were set up in the mid 90s. So they don’t know what their average relative to the base line is. The map is extrapolated from stations well away from there and smoothed.

        The only station that has a good set of records going back before 1960 and still logging that is within 100km of Bateman’s Bay is Moruya Heads Pilot Station. The temperatures there for 2019 do not seem to match the anomaly map so I suspect it is merged out by using all the post 90s stations, of which there are lots. Bury good data in dross in the lies damn lies and statistics philosophy. .

        It has been widely reported that she expected that being a princess was going to be wonderful and she started throwing her weight around almost immediately, eg getting her security to “speak” to a man taking a selfie of himself as she was too important to be photographed.
        
        So my casual observation was probably quite accurate and I find your censorship precious in the extreme.

  The gun buyback is a terrible waste of money. The purpose of public policy is to improve welfare of people. This will not. At the same time it infringes on the freedoms of good citizens while, inevitably, criminals and gangs ignore the law.
  
  Unfortunately it is the kind of law change that is difficult to undo even if a future government were so inclined.

    I don’t know which members of NZ’s ‘gun lobby’ you know – but the men and women I know who organise and advocate for safe and responsible shooting sports and hunting in this country are some of the best NZers I know.
    
    Often cockies, passionate about the outdoors, almost always very well organised, keen to take young kids out camping and hunting, always good for a yarn and very generous with meat and hospitality.
    
    Many of them make me proud that they call me a friend.

        What do you think of the chilling effect on free speech of raiding those who have given (non violent) opposing opinions?
        Interesting you appear to cite a sketchily worded survey of gun lobby support from v early post chch it’s not even clear who they actually mean (NRA?)
        I know of no gun owners who support what has been done to gun license holders, and the over reach given to police they are already using.
        I also know of a bunch who will be moving their votes over what has been done to them by politicians on both sides of the house. My vote included.
        Keep using that gun champ, others will lobby for your ability to do so while you stupidly take it for granted.

  I read an interesting opinion piece a few years ago.
  The guys argument was that, no matter what America says, they are stuck over there pretty much indefinitely because the invasions of Afghanistan & Iraq have created a new equilibrium.
  What’s more I’ll bet behind the scenes the US is putting pressure on NZ to maintain some sort of presence. They need as many countries involved as possible to give their own presence more authority.

  Look, get this through your head – It’s not because the US is over there that Iraq (or Iran) are at war with them. Those Middle East countries would still have antipathy for the US (who they refer to as “The Great Satan”) whether they were there or not. They are expansionist.   When I was in Bangkok someone was sent to gprison for sixty years, reduced to thirty for pleading guilty, after a secret trial with no appeal for criticizing the King.
  Someone was put on trial for badmouthing the King’s dog. I think he got off. A taxi driver was locked up for saying something to a passenger who duly dobbed him in.
  So if you’re going to criticize Iran, criticize Thailand too, but don’t visit the country again because you’ll be locked up too.

    Qatar, good when hosting US troops, very bad when hosting Al Jazeera and annoying the Saudis.
    Yemen, good for nothing except bombing.
    Syria, bad when fighting Israel or gassing own people, good when fighting ISIS and Kurds
    Turkey, mostly good, except for attacking Kurds and narking on Saudi murderers.
    Egypt, used to be very bad, then very good. Got wrong result from democracy, but now very good again.

    I don’t know the ins and outs of this story, but a couple of quotes from the Stuff article:
    
    ” …… the charity, which was founded in 1971 and funds research and education, had “not committed serious wrongdoing in respect of unlawful use of funds” regarding Ritchie’s agreed-upon additional annual leave arrangement.”
    
    It doesn’t say what his agreed-upon additional leave arrangements are. But having a generous leave entitlement is not unlawful.
    
    Further from the article:
    
    “Stuff was unable to contact Ritchie, but he told the Herald during his time with the charity it had increased its research funding from $350,000 to $3 million.”
    
    So perhaps he was out on the golf course pressing the flesh and networking to raise funds. Any different to a working lunch or other means of entertaining clients?

The old biddy from opposite us (actually a really lovely lady) came over last night, to see if she could borrow a couple of eggs until her next Super payment goes in.
We had plenty in the pantry, so I bunged her half a doz and told her not to worry about it.

I had to laugh to myself when she said she read in the Herald, where the PM and her de facto husband, spent more on a slap-up lunch at a flash Aussie restaurant, than pensioners get to survive on for two weeks.

For example
– is that individual income or household? Very very different, ask any DINK.

The population of Aus. in 1939 was about 7 million, now it’s 25. This horror story appears worse then I can imagine. I have read no other report giving such a descriptive backgrounder on the action of the fires.
Control now is going to have to be at the Federal level and enforced.

    I not apportioning blame. State governments seek to maintain their rights but safety has to take precedence.
    The huge increase in population will have caused the small towns to grow too. If they had not experienced a serious fire within the past 50 years they had little reason to be wary. I have seen residential suburbs between Brisbane and the Gold Coast where trees are everywhere. Getting in and out of those places would be risky or impossible.

        We are winning because we are right. We have good science to back up our positions and we don’t cite frauds like Mann who won’t release his data, even after his humiliating court case. Our version of how the sun and atmosphere interact is backed up by basic physics, whereas the alarmist catastrophic version only exists in climate models. Not one prediction has come to pass, but the NH seems to be cooling, volcanism is on the rise, the Rossby waves are more meridional and the stratosphere seems to be influenced by changes in solar wind and galactic radiation. All this is measurable and fits general climatology basics. It’s got fuck all to do with upticks and safe spaces.

    Just a hint, SB, the wings and bonnet are made of relatively thin steel, and almost untouched. They would, based upon surface area to volume ratio, have melted long before a steel engine block.
    Not only that, but the steel would have oxidized in the outside as it cooled and been pretty much black. (We used to forge work mild steel at school and had to wire brush the stuff off before working the hot metal).
    The stuff on the ground is an aluminium alloy. Much lower melting point.

I support the police in undertaking their difficult role.
1. I am a gun owner, with regular use, more than weekly.
2. Yes I have been “raided”. I think it was an appropriate action.
(a tradie reported a vast arsenal lying about – turned out to be my sons harmless ‘airsoft’ replicas. He plays some weird war sport.)
I am annoyed with the tradie but the police were great about the fiasco.
3. I have two people close who have had guns removed. One after a ‘domestic’ and one who was depressed. Arguable neccessity for those, but I support the law.
All these keyboard warriors complaining about our cops need to think about what cops need to deal with.

Iran has owned up, they had no other option with all the evidence

* Iran announced Saturday that its military “unintentionally” shot down a Ukrainian jetliner, killing all 176 aboard.

The statement came Saturday morning and blamed “human error” for the shootdown.

  The police have a tough job. In my opinion, the problem is the law. Turning my .22 which held 15 rounds that took a few minutes to reload into an illegal weapon allowed it to be traded in for enough money to enable the purchase of a new .22 with a magazine holding 10 rounds that can be swapped with another full magazine in seconds.

Adsb flight data for Jan 04 and 06 show same route as the 08, tracking outbound radial 297 thereabouts and to the left of the Parand Power plant.

Any marginal 10 degree deviation is likely due to the aircraft being blown out of the sky.
